Cultist looks great! Is he from the Frostgrave range?
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Yep the Frostgrave cultists are an excellent kit very simple but characterful. Got some more stuff done as well
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Been reading up my copy of Kings of War and Uncharted Empires as well as Dragon Rampant. Yep just before GW releases points for AoS I brought several fantasy rulesets. Do I feel a fool. No both interest me more. For Dragons Rampant with it's unit design rues it'll be in when I can be bothered. Which might be fairly quickly actually as the model count means the Army of New Haven will be ready for it fairly soon as well.
Kings of War is more problematic as I don't really have a Varangur (Warriors of Chaos) or Herd (Beastman) army but instead have a Chaos Horde which mixes both ranges thoroughly. I'm also seriously considering adding models to make it more useful as either of these forces originally I was aghast at this but considering it more I'm quite happy it means it's rejuvenated my interest in 28mm fantasy which is what it was meant to do.
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Corruptor and cultist done had to update my basing mix lately and not happy with it they only had the lime green stuff so I've dyed it but It's started to clump I'll leave it to dry for longer and that should help.

I'm liking your stuff, Llamahead. Very nice blend of models (I'm loving that Corruptor peeling his face/mouth/thingie) with a colour scheme that oozes (pun intended) Nurgle. Looking forward to more slimy goodness

Thanks guys more cultists and zombies for you this time
Went minimalist on the Cultist actually looks quite good.
These Zombies are rather dark but mehh

That scythe cultist has something very sinister about him, like he is a scarecrow filled with rotten flesh...
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Yep the scythe is my favourite part on the cultist sprue if I'm honest and I'm probably joining the Gnickstarter for the Gnolls this week.

Two new minions for your perusal
So here's a shot of the loot from the Kickstarter
and here is all the Zombies. 199 of them
Lots of excellent models in here oddly enough one of the sets I'm really taken with is the Deadshot Archers which are the best undead archers I've seen. The crows are also excellent gribblies. I have several of the NPC zombies earmarked for Frostgrave Vampires as well! To be honest it also provides ,e with a Kings of War Undead army as well. Might be worth looking in to.
8745
Post by: Llamahead
It didn't quite work for Kings of War but does provide me with a fun force for Dragons Rampant.
Zombies
and another Warrior.
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Got another cultist to join the ranks.
But far more amusingly an evil Oom-pah-pah horn player. I've earmarked him as a Skald character for Kings of War

Cultist.
So planning for next year on this blog. Weeeellll planning per se for this project though. Gradually paint random models from my stockpile really. Frostgrave barbarians will be heading here at some point in the relatively near future. Several of the Massive Darkness gribblies will be painted to complement this host as well but don't expect too much. I'm hoping to play a few KoW games with these guys as Varangur and the Herd as well at some point as well as Dragon Rampant there waiting on the Army of New Haven to get big enough so I can provide both sides. It's almost there.

Frostgrave Barbarian
Zombicide Zombie Dwarf
Zombies

Mutant Zombies

Archerz
and an Executioner
8745
Post by: Llamahead
A Barbarian to start
followed by a Gargoyle
then more Zombies
including a Hooker
and the Abominalpha
Could have done with a more contrasty tone between the flayed skins and the creatures skin.
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Start with a normal Chaos Warrior
add Gargoyles and Gnolls
season with Zombies giving you my Nurgle blog recipe
The final two are Queen Medea and Troy
This blog is fairly distinct from where I started chronicling a fairly normal Beastman and then Warriors of Chaos army. This blog now basically hosts models I consider appropriate usually acquired for Frostgrave bestiaries or as parts of board games rather than as components for an army. This'll continue to function for that but I doubt I'm going to do much purchasing at all specifically for this. Equally if KoW takes off some of the Herd and Varangur units might be deliberately added. I've still got plenty to paint that fits this theme as well so it won't end anytime soon but it might gradually decay.......
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Gradually decaying ehhh....
Classic Blood Bowl mutant ideal for my Nurgle forces and a Pigman also bang on for the original theme!
Zombies and an Abomination also fit well.
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Quite a few models for my Nurgle force.
Zombie cook with converted rolling pin.
Archerz
A Gargoyle only one more to go and their all painted.
Mantic Zombie Troll
and finally the first three Evil Dwarves from Massive Darkness.

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
Glad I'm catching this project at the beginning.
One skill of yours that I've always been impressed by is how you use models from any range / scale and turn them into a cohesive force. RAFM and Ral Partha have as much a home in your collection as GW and Mantix.
Looking forward to seeing how this project goes.
115
Post by: Azazelx

Klom an Ogrey thing
26139
Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
Bummer on the overtime but hooray for money.
And speaking of ranges, where is Klom an Ogrey thing from?
Also, I just realized your dwarf is holding an axe from the mid-90's Chaos Warriors plastic set. Might you have any extra of those you'd be willing to part with? I've been working on finishing up my collection of those Chaos Warriors and am patiently waiting for fate to drop some of those axes onto my modeling table.
8745
Post by: Llamahead
It would be a transatlantic bit swap but I possibly do will check for you. Klom is a Zombicide model from the Paul Bonner guest box.
26139
Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
I'm sure I have a thousand different things you'd have an interest in and would happily make a trade for them. If you can't think of anything in particular you'd be looking for I'll put together a care package of bitz and a few other surprises.
57098
Post by: carlos13th
I skipped the dead eye walkers when I backed zombicide. If you have used them do they add positively to the game?
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Ok Skalk I'll check what I've still got for you care package sounds excellent. I might have less of the old Chaos Warrior bits left than I think however so I'll PM you after I check.
Carlos 13th. Yes the Deadeye Walkers do add positively to the game as they make the Zombies far more dangerous and hard to avoid forcing you to be more sneaky and providing far more of an element of risk if your caught out in the open. They allow the Zombies far more board control and make you have to be far more sneaky. In some ways their almost too effective but it definitely adds more tactics to the game.
More Zombies as well
Mutiez just for fun
and a Zombie Monk who can also stand in as an Apprentice in Frostgrave
26139
Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
Zombie Monk - Zombiecide miniature? I'm always in the market for another Necromancer for my Deadwalkers, Don't like the current GW one at all and I'm not happy with the one I am using.
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Yep from one of the NPC Zombie boxes. Great fun the Zombicide series has been a great source of character models as well as the zombies for me.
Just another Pigman.

Post by: Llamahead
Good batch of some of the bigger Zombicide monsters for you today.
But first a Gnoll
Zombie Executioner
Doctor Stormcrow
and now the Monsters
Black Currant earmarked for use as a foot Daemon Prince
and the mighty Abominarat
26139
Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
And echoing my reply to your other thread, I'm getting back into Mordheim and that Executioner would make an AWESOME Cultists so long as he's scale. Any change you could take a pic of him next to a WFB model? Nice conversion btw.
The Abominarat is my pick of the lot. That's just disgusting. Well done.

Post by: kestral
Great stuff - my favorites from the most recent round are the Abnomarat and the garden gnome giant with skulls. : )

Post by: CommissarKhaine
+1 for the Abominarat! would fit nicely in any kind of game system

Cheers I got the Zombicide stuff primarily for Warhammer if I'm honest and rebased it for that then Age of Sigmar happened. Pair of Gnolls for your entertainment. Also delightedto say Warlords of Erewhon is attracting interest at the club so Ill be getting some games in.
30672
Post by: Theophony
I haven’t heard any mire on Warlords of nowhere recently (can’t not make fun of the name as it’s so blatant), but how are the mechanics? I have Antares, but is it just a reskin or did they fix problems within the system?
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Hard to say as I don't play Antares. The mechanics will have issues I'm sure but they give quick brutal combat. Mechanically it's very simple but I'm sure complexities will come to light. It's certainly a good solid game but I need to play against more people whove read the rulebook before I can really discuss mechanics. They've certainly been tweaked to give far more unit variety than Bolt Action as it should be.
30672
Post by: Theophony
Just going to D10 makes for more variety to bolt action. I’ll have to add it to my want list. I’m just a little worried that this will be another warlord games pump and dump.
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Meh theres enough content in the book with about a dozen or so index lists there that frankly it won't need long term support. I hope it gets it but the right kind. Fantasy kitchen sink and more variety added rather than knuckling down on an original setting. Excellent fluff pieces in the book however.

Love the beard on those dwarves , great color, what did you use to bring those about?

Post by: Llamahead
Cheers Theophony just Vallejo Tan Yellow with Brown ink above it.
Been a while since I've posted but I've been painting.
We'll start with a pair of Frostgrave barbarians.
Simple generic and plenty of uses.
This Frosgrave Gnoll also fits.
This Ral Partha Gnoll converted into a Shaman is a bit more specific.
This Pigman champion is an excellent Midlam miniatures model really seems like a hero.
Finishing with a Heresy maggotman which I gave a disgusting look with PVA glue.

Oh man, that classic Ral Partha Gnoll brings back some memories...circa 1989. I seem to recall the set had an actual Shaman model in it.
Great work here. Do you get to play Frostgrave much? Or are these all for Massive Darkness? D&D?

Cheers Captain Brown and Camkierhi.
Fango I think I've got the Shaman possibly but the 2nd hand set I brought wasn't particularly complete. Can't complain it was from a charity shop with an amazing section of old citadel models in Oxford. Literally hundreds of classic models. I spent a lot there and hopefully will someday again. Currently this collection is just that a collection I'll play whatever fantasy games I can get with it. At the moment there is an FLGS near me which runs Frostgrave biweekly so I'm trying to get there but I'll happily use this collection in any game going. I've used it in Warhammer (it started out with the old Beasts of Chaos book and ran through from 7th to 8th possibly a bit of 6th as well), Kings of War, Open Combat, Warlords of Erewhon Zombicide & Frostgrave and would like to use it in Dragons Rampant as well. If I had to I'd use them in AoS but I genuinely consider either Dragons Rampant or Warlords of Erewhon superior games.I like it to be easy to remember what units do and universal special rules make that far simpler than unique unit special rules while still giving the same level of tactical complexity. I haven't actually played Massive Darkness yet.... The advantage of Fantasy is that its much easier to use a variety of models than it is in sci-fi an axe is an axe and a sword is a sword but sci-fi weapons are much more specific and need to be so to be fair to your opponent. Also I've brought models so I'll paint them I can work out a use afterwards. After that more models.
A Gnoll Trap Expert
A Loka Centaur
and from Massive Darkness Barbarians with the Agent
as well as the Cliffbreaker Cyclops
Yep I have him for any game I need a giant stone throwing Cyclops why limit myself to using him in only one?
I've also made these Chosen from the Sequitors contained in Mortal Realms first issue fairly simple conversion but they are certainly Chosen rather than Blight Kings as they don't have the yuck factor.

More stuff for the force mainly from Massive Darkness but some other stuff as well.

Been a while and cheers Monkeytroll.
More Chaos Dwarves from Massive Darkness to begin with.
Coming close to the end of these actually.
A Hogman and Maggotman (Midlam and Heresy)
Warriors from Reaper and Avatars of War
Frostgrave and Massive Darkness Barbarians
and finally Lord Tusk
Hated this model's huge impractical sword originally so I replaced it with tentacles and now he's a Chaos Ogre who I genuinely like.

A Gnoll
A Massive Darkness Construct and some Chaos Dwarves
I've got the models for this project from Massive Darkness done but between Reaper, Cthulu Death May Die and Bloodborne I've got plenty of gribbly eldritch abominations which can join these guys. I'm also going to do a block of Stormcast Chosen and I've still got some old Chaos models to paint so expect this blog to continue pootling along for this year. While I'm currently planning on picking up some Frostgrave Daemons if I do that'll be for a new none Nurgle project.

Post by: Llamahead
Barbarian from Frostgrave
Reaper Swamp Troll
and finally the Hellephant
This is the model that sold me Massive Darkness. I'm also really happy with the paint job.

There's been a bit of talk on some plogs about finishing projects lately. Well this is a project I'm happy to say will never get finished. It's got to a playable level and is certainly not just unpainted but I'll be adding elements whenever I fancy. This is a good healthy place for a project to be. Equally I could argue that the army is finished while the collection isn't.

That could be a verbatim statement regarding my hobby philosophy. My Chaos Warriors aren't done, I just don't have anything new to paint for them. My Necromunda terrain could always stand another weathering wash, or a dial box, or a hanging cable. Nothing is every truly "done" unless I decide that it is. I was bothered by my unfinished projects for a few years until I accepted that truly nothing is ever actually done until I'm done, and by done I mean "estate sale". It's made my approach to hobby time a lot less stressful and judgemental.

So I've been checking my blogs to put up a review piece but what I said after the Gnoll cheftain pretty much somes it up I want to post more often next year but nothing rreally new will be added to this bunch. I've got Stormcast Chosen and Frostgrave Demons which may end up here when I feel like it but no big purchases are planned it'll just be a fun change of pace for when I feel like it.

An ancient Minotaur Lord I picked up 7 years ago from a charity shop in Oxford. I followed my army colour scheme less than normal as I wanted him for Frostgrave primarily.

Simple Reaper Warrior went Chaos purely with paint as they are definitely not the right scale to go with my Perry models.

Crone from Reaper seems to have flaked badly. I use acrylic craft paint as primer anything better for the job?

Halloween toy flies again but the bigger size.

I'm a sucker for old miniatures so I love the Minotaur Lord you painted up. It totally fits the scheme you've been doing, so well done.
re: primer, I always use cheap flat black rattlecan primer. I've tried the really expensive stuff and found that it can obscure detail even when I'm being careful. I don't know if Wal-Mart has made its way over there but surely you have an equivalent. Whatever they have for bottom shelf flat black, give it a try.

Love Crone, nice interesting model.

Ehh that works fine for plastics I use one of the equivalents Bones though have an odd response to it it basically remains permamently sticky. Yep Crnes an excellent model from the Reaper Bones line. Well worth a browse for something more esoteric.
Man thats a dusty photograph. Frostgrave plastic treasure hunter blogged up here as I wanted something on this blog and she can definitely find use as a cultist.

Frostgrave Demon. Plenty more of these chaps to come as it's an excellent kit I really enjoy. The styles great and I feel an army of these chaps might happen equally I've been assembling them to get the variants I want as Frostgrave critters so full regiments may take a while. It's also time to review where I am this year with the project and realise that I'm in roughly the same place I was last year Stormcast Chosen and Frostgrave Demons with random Reaper models when they fit the theme of the army more aiming for Frostgrave villainy than anything else. Might look at getting some fantasy going at the cllub but too many games and not enough time will keep this project on the back burner pleasantly adding models if and when I feel like it. Healthy hobby modelling and painting great. Incidetally some toy bashes may well appear here and I do have that War Mammoth herd to play with.

I blame Kid Kyoto as that's what browsing the Reaper site does to your collection....Also a lot of it is attending Wargames Shows and following the more obscure manufacturers. Board Games especially CMON style games are another excellent source of random crazy miniatures. Now for a fairly simple Hasslefree Gnoll for your viewing pleasure.

Just a simple Chaos Warrior from the Frostgrave Daemon kit which is absolutely excellent for these.
8745
Post by: Llamahead
RGD games Satyrs oddly enough make pretty convincing Gor. At 40 a box they'll probably work out fr cheaper than the GW kits......

Another Frostgrave Demon an excellent kitvery much recommended for anybody who wants to play with fantasy Chaos.

Chosen based on a Stormcast model I've finally got one of these painted after first mentioning doing it a couple of years ago. February 2020 yeekkk....The scatter mix is a bunch of Javis scatter flocks made for railway moodelling mostmodel shops will stock it the secret is to mix a variety of bags to make a more realistic mixture I also add twigs, ballast and coconut fibers as well as home made clump foliage.

Post by: Llamahead
Shoggoth from Death may Die. Ideal for a Chaos Spawn I'll eventually make a couple of base adaptors to use these models in square based games.
8745
Post by: Llamahead
More of the Chosen using Stormcast make for far bigger larger Chosen. These are also Chosen not Blight Kings which would be far more mutated. Having these shows that the army is still more rooted in the old worlde wather than the AoS oddly enough.

Another Warrior from a Frostgrave Daemon.

Simply using Mantic Daemon arms on a Frostgrave Wizard with a cultist head gives a rather nice fire ball throwing psycho.

Nubble from Archon Studios makes a rather satisfying Nurgle Spawn as he seems far too dopey for a Daemon Prince. Now how do I see this project continuing in it's 15th year? Slowly and steadily depending on what my gaming group decides to do I might well decide to use this army in the Olde Worlde if enough friends are interested if not I'll continue adding models as I see fit minly more of the Stormcast Chosen and Frostgrave Daemons but I've still got plenty of models to paint if I've got a hankering to. It'll never be a major project again but I quiet enjoy dabling in odd models. I havent made this project a focus for about 10 years but sometimes its nice to use the old styles.

Reaper Knight painted in this scheme for some variety as the scale works better with this lot than my Historicals.

Another of my Chosen I'm mentally divided on Stormcast there excellent models in the main but the background does nothing for me. As a source of Basemodels though I like them more and more as I play with them.

RGD games Satyrs. An excellent kit at 40 for £29 with a wide variety of heads and weapons they are therefore brilliant at bulking out beastman armies. With the green tattos and the midnight blue they can be used both in this army and with my Mythic Greeks as well.
