Anything under a month is a quick trip. Hope you have a whale of a time and come back with a stupid grin on your face.

When the water rides state you will get wet they actually mean it (unlike over here).

Peter -

Pursuant to our email conversation, here's something to show you. My shoddy camera work has blocked out most of the detail, so (aside from the last picture) only the most hard-working pixel hunter will be able to discern any details. These are for the forthcoming "Inquisitor Tournament" or the "INQinvitational" as I've termed it. Obviously with Inquisitor you can't play for killpoints or the like, so I'm working on something rather different.

Maybe someone will find them interesting enough! (And they may even provide you with some clues as to the storyline of the campaign day!)

Nice bed sheets.

Really? Damn I think I've been playing it wrong.... Kill points are a great idea! Oh hang on Kill Points aren't even a great idea in 40k (that 60pts guard squad is worth the same as a 250pts terminator squad....errrr right).

I really couldn't work out very much from any of those cards, I got a few names here and there and I now know Zuul is a Xanthite. Lets say your camera skills are lacking/you tease. I shall assume (until I hear otherwise) that as you play through the tournament you find/are given certain pieces of information/cards that will help you on your quest for domination/lead you to your next battle.

They look good.

Such a great blog this one. Really looking forward to that Abnett interview - I agree 100% with your opinion about Einsenhorn trilogy and am desperate to hear news on the E. vs. Ravenor / Bequin / 3rd trilogy.

Hey guys, went to my desk late tonight intent on pinning some Van Saars for my friend Darren. I actually managed to do a couple - here's my favourite:

This is a model that's been sitting around on my desk for something like two years - I've finally given him a head that I think suits him. Some minor green-stuffing, and then I'll happily consider him finished (finally!)

A very sinister psyker concept that came together very organically!

Obviously the staff will be replaced with brass wire, but the model's close to where I want it to be already, which is great. It has an awesome creepy vibe, which I like.

This Pit Slave is going to get converted into a Gladiator of some kind. I want to give him a shield and... some sort of close combat weapon, perhaps bionic, though. I'll have to give it some thought.

I've just recently bought the heresy lych to turn him into an inquisitorial minion for my witchhunter. Funny to see him converted into a psyker now and you even used the head I chose too.
Have you considered giving him the hat? It is a little bit ridiculous, but I might like that about a psyker.

Molotov's INQ28 (Updated 05/01/2014) @ 2011/08/03 09:23:37

Post by: Molotov

Hah, I'm not so sure about the hat... I had even considered giving him hair, but I think that would detract from the creepiness of the model, which is a key aspect for me.

Molotov's INQ28 (Updated 05/01/2014) @ 2011/08/03 15:41:47

Post by: Baiyuan

I agree hair would make him less creepy (bad thing), while the hat could make him creepy-weird or ridiculous.

Another thing, how about a psi-hood of some sort? Maybe linked to a very small backpack thing? Could make him look more 40k.

Hey guys,

It's been almost a month since I last updated in here. Whilst my hobby life hasn't been as bountiful as I would've wanted it, I've done quite a bit, and so I'm posting here as a "Proof of Concept", in a way.

With the explosion of interest in INQ28, I've actually found myself hitting a hobby rut. I'm just not sure what models to make, and so I've been left wanting to model, but without much in the way of a 'muse'.

So, this is a summary of what I've got thus far; I'll be presenting links, rather than images, but feel free to click away to delve further.

The bulk of my work thus far has been on the retinues of Inquisitors Hoth and Adorno. Hoth is an Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos with minor radical tendencies, whilst Adorno is a Xanthite among the Ordo Malleus, treading the path of the radical as he and his bound daemonhost search for the Archive of Artemisia.

The Retinue of Inquisitor Hoth
* Inquisitor Villem Hoth
* Sylus Tem
* Titus Dio (and "Petra")
* Saul Baltasar
* Female Tech-Priest
* Remembrance "Mem"
* "Hurk"
Inquisitor Hoth is a long-serving Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos. Over the years, he has begun to acquire somewhat of a moderate radical bent, believing as he does that certain alien species can be useful, even aiding mankind's struggle for survival in the dark millennium. His retinue is comprised, for the most part, of capable men and women he has gathered through his decades of service - people he has come to consider his friends - for they share the burden of duty and service to the God-Emperor.

I'm not 100% sure what to add to Hoth's retinue - it's already quite bulky, and many of the classic roles are already taken. The female tech-priest I consider to be an ally of Hoth's, and I'm planning on building a Praetorian battle servitor for her as a bodyguard (and I want to get the Forgeworld Titan Tech-priest's Servo-Skull to go along with her, as well.)

Obviously Sylus works as Hoth's savant; you have Titus and Saul as almost two sides to a coin - the Arbitrator and the Rogue. Both of them are capable characters in combat, with Titus being more ranged and Saul able to close with his artificer-crafted laspistol and shock-sword. "Mem" is there to lend a bit of heavy support should circumstances warrant it. And obviously Hurk demonstrates Hoth's dalliances with the Xenos.

I've considered giving Hoth a priest of some kind to act as a moral compass, but I'm not sure at the moment. It's perhaps worth considering an Interrogator for Hoth, but I'm not sure how I could play off the extant themes.

The Retinue of Inquisitor Adorno
* Inquisitor Theodor Adorno
* Cherub Familiar
* Ophelia Dannica
* Seraphael
* "Mourn"
* Banner
* Chrono-Gladiator
* Creepy Psyker
Adorno is somewhat different. For Hoth, his retinue is comprised of friends. For Adorno, that's not quite the same. He despises the daemon, but his fate is intimately bound with the Whisperprince now, and he must work to wheedle the truths from its whispered lies. Ophelia is his devoted apprentice (and the two are, possibly, rather... close) but Adorno's retinue are, for the most part, tools to be used. Mourn, Banner and the Chrono-Gladiator are all effectively expendable, and there is a clear master-servant relationship there.

+++++++

I've been reading a lot of INQ28 retinues recently which focus around broadly moderate or radical Inquisitors. I figured that a real Monodominant Inquisitor could be an interesting change. A brash and overt Inquisitor, a crusading hero-type. He would be surrounded by the religious and the trappings of force - he's the sort that will barge into battle without much in the way of subtlety.

I've been stymied on an actual model for this Inquisitor, though something inspired by Migsula's Inquisitor may be an idea. I've been toying with the possibility of creating a model similar to Covenant using the sorceror. Unsure on that at the moment.

His retinue is likely to consist of:

  • [*]Pyremaster Korbin
    [*]Sergeant Drexler
    [*]Deacon Edric Gallowglass
    [*]Hierophant

  • Names I've considered at the moment:

  • [*] Felroth Greer [*] Philber Trask [*] Atticus Black [*] Maccabeus Wroth [*] Hastor Whitlock

  • Concepts I've fiddled with recently:
  • [*] A hive ganger called "Bones". I have nothing more for this idea. Could he have a skeleton tattooed on him? Could he be skinny? I'm not sure. [*] I'd really like to do something with a Battle Sister, but obviously the models impact on that. Could make good "heavy support" for the Monodominant, though. [*] A Naval Officer [*] A Slaver/Mutie Hunter, with padded armour and a set of grabbing jaws, useful for capturing people. [*] A Progenium Drill-Abbot [*] An assassin that uses guns [*] I'm intrigued by the idea of a low-tech character (Conan?) that is covered in tattoos that count as hexagrammatic/pentagrammatic wards. [*] I keep thinking of a character who keeps an "aerie", a flock of servo-skulls that operate for him.

  • I definitely have a couple of models that I've sent to Steve - There's the dual-autopistol scummer; the husband-and-wife mercenary team, and a missionary running. The question is whether I can incorporate these satisfactorily. Some of these are useful for the Nova Castille campaign, to be used alongside any retinue that suffers too many casualties! Alongside these, I have my bionic Gladiator WIP, and my Guardsman (seen on the left here.) As ever, I'm keen to explore my assassin concepts also.

    +++

    Sometimes modelling mojo (such as it is) works in funny ways. This model was never supposed to turn out this way, but it looks as though I'm in the progress of creating another radical Inquisitor. This model was orginally supposed to be for one of Adorno's henchmen, a "daemonsword bearer". Now he's becoming an Inquisitor on his own! These first two pictures show me making a start on the model, cutting away the shield, resculpting the hem of the sleeve and pinning a plastic IG hand in place.

    The plan is to have the model holding a daemonsword and pushing the enemy away by brandishing the skull of a dead saint. The daemonsword the model currently has is a little chunky and cartoonish, so I want to replace it with something else, certainly something a little more sinister. I like the dichotomy of pure and impure - or the idea than an impure man can believe himself to be pure...

    It's not from a GW kit; it's from the Russian Not-Josef model that I managed to snag off eBay a while back.

    As you can see, I've attached it to his hand now:

    I've also started to resculpt his robe to repair the damage left by removing the shield.

    I also (kind of accidentally) started to do this model:

    Perhaps even at this stage you can see the inspiration I was channelling. I've had a complete nightmare with it, capped off by ripping loads of GS off the model and snipping it in half with clippers. Which leaves me somewhere here:

    The picture is intentionally small because the camera is making it look a lot worse than it really does in real life. Maybe you can see where I'm heading with it... I'm just stymied by the lack of decent Cadian arms...

    I totally missed the last update here. Oops

    Van Saar - Nice simple head swap that totally changes the models purpose. Are you going to be changing the bolter into something else?

    Creepy Astropath - I've been meaning to get this model for some time. Never got round to it and probably never will. He will look great when finished. The staff needs extending as you said. I think he needs some extra 40k stuff, pouches, wires etc

    Gladiator - The pose of that pit slave is great for a gladiator type character. Left arm shield and get rid of the rock drill. Arms from the Marauder horseman kit would probably be about the right scale for the model. To change the original character of the model I would avoid too much in the way of bionics.

    Hobby Rut - Looks like you're out of the rut now....or at least forcing yourself to do some modelling.
    As for what to add to Hoth's retinue I'd like to see the female tech priest and praetorian. It would be interesting to see how she deals with Hoth's use of alien technology. I'd not be that bothered about having a priest, not every Inquisitor would want/think they need a moral compass, especially in the Ordo Xenos. Mem should visit Tox City

    Monodominant - I'm glad you're wanting to go along the "hero" lines of monodominant. I'm planning on going the witch finder/ecclesiarchy route...creepy rather than golden. Philber Trask sounds like a good name to me....actually they were all good apart from Atticus Black... First name good second name cliche Now onto the model, splitting the =I= is genius, great choice of head too. I like the armoured top half a lot more than the original GS. A brass etch eagle on the chest and you're sorted. How are you planning on making the shoulder mounted gun? Edit - How about scout arms instead of cadian? One option is use the armoured forearm and GS upper arms on.

    (Plastic) Mordian Iron Guardsman - is cool.

    Another Radical! - Good start, GS robe looks good. I'm really happy to see you changing the crusader model. I like the idea of him pushing evil away with one hand and embracing it with the other. I'm not fond of the place holder sword, but have no helpful suggestions for a replacement. The skull hanging from the chain is fine, the chain is a little chunky. What head are you considering for him?

    Ok I think I am up to date now. Cheers for the inspiring models

    Peter

    It's been a while since I've updated the Dakka thread, so let's see what I can put up:

    Hey guys,

    Been a productive day really. I've put together a few figures, but here's what I've got to show today:

    Some progress on the Creepy Psyker from Adorno's retinue. This guy is going well, so far - I just need to tidy up the GS. I got a set of five clay shapers for Christmas, so this just a case of patience and care - still, he's pretty much there, and I'm happy with how he's going.

    The Praetorian Sergeant I showed a while ago is now complete, thanks to PDH's care package. He sent me the Baneblade Commander's sabre that I was looking for. Thankfully, it was an easier job than I expected to cut it off the Commander's hand and fit it to a Cadian Sergeant Chainsword hand. I've had to GS the sleeve to make it a bit thicker to accept the plastic hand convincingly, and I might just need to touch up the cuff of the revolver hand to make it look okay.

    Another new figure that I've been working on today is this:

    Obviously, it's based on the Khorne Lord conversion done by Doghouse, though I've begun to move away in my own direction based on the bits I had to hand. I've really enjoyed working with Finecast on this figure, and the potential of the material has really been revealed to me. I'm still fiddling around with it, but I anticipate this model will become a Monodominant Inquisitor, my version of Tyrus. Though he won't (quite) be in power armour, his armour is likely to be powered, and he has quite the nasty bionic left hook. Still a lot of work to do on it, but I'm really enjoying the opportunity to play around with a conversion again.

    Splendid work. Very convincing - once undercoated they will look like an original sculpt!

    Specially fond of the inquisitor - great chainsword wielding pose - looks ready to lop off some heads

    Glad the care package has been useful, looks like you've kept your end of the bargain and then some. The sabre looks good. I also like the DG inspired inquisitor, pose is great but the backpack needs some work....at the moment it looks like a heavy bolter ammo hopper.

    How are you finding the clay shapers you got for Christmas?

    I'm really loving how Creepy Psyker is coming along. Where'd you get the head for him? The Doghouse-inspired Inquisitor is also amazing. I may do something along those lines myself at some point. Hope to see more out of you soon.

    PDH: The clay shapers are good, certainly help to neaten my sculpting. I'll never be an amazing sculptor, but it's helped sharpen up my conversions. I recently used them on the cloak for this puritan Inquisitor, and they've certainly helped.

    The backpack's not really an issue for me. I think the ridged sections could be painted as energy if need be. I think it works so far, but we'll see. I've converted it slightly, but it's really only cosmetic. I just wanted to have a power armour-esque backpack, but something that's bulkier than the Space Marines use, suggesting that the Astartes armour is more efficient.

    I have found that shotgun, by the way... just need to find the cash to post it to you! Don't hold your breath...

    Dexter: Thanks! The head on the psyker came with the original model: Sebastien, Apprentice Mage. Scroll down slightly and you'll see; it's the alternate "liche" head.

    Ha ha the shotgun, no rush for the shotgun....I've got far too many Inq figures to be playing with at the moment to carry on with the scavvies for now. Though I get a feeling the Scavvies will return force once the Inqvitational is over.

    Clay shapers did the same for me, I love them. Painting the backpack as energy didn't occur to me.....that would actually look pretty good. I like the idea that the armour is less efficient than marine armour.

    I have a concept for your assassin model. Convert the stick wielding hand to a sword and the hand that is stretched out would be wielding the hidden blade. Im going to buy that model and do what I told. You should also use greenstuff to make tha pointed part on the hood. Can you tell me how tall the model is and can it fit in the 28mm range?

    \well, thanks for the unexpected threadromancy! I've been busy with work and with SWMBO, so I haven't had too much chance. Still, I have been trying to organise the retinues for the INQvitational, and just to get an idea of where I am, and what I have left to work on. Here we have:

    Inquisitor Adorno's retinue, including:
    - Inquisitor Adorno
    - Seraphael, the Whisperprince (Bound Daemonhost)
    - Banner, Imperial Guard Veteran
    - "Mourn", Feral World Mercenary
    - Chrono-Gladiator
    - Creepy Psyker

    (Additionally Steve's got Ophelia Dannica, Adorno's pupil and lover, and a Cherub-familiar for Adorno.)

    Inquisitor Hoth's retinue, featuring:
    - Inquisitor Hoth
    - Arbitrator Titus Dio (and Cyber-Mastiff "Petra)
    - Sylus Tem, Sage
    - Saul Baltasar, Degenerate Rogue
    - "Hurk"

    (Additionally, Steve's recently completed "Mem", and there's a female Tech-Priest to be going in this retinue. I do have ideas for a Combat Servitor Bodyguard to go along with the Tech-Priestess, but that'll have to wait for a little while, I think.)

    I've been working a little on my Puritan Monodominant Inquisitor:

    He's not complete yet, but he's certainly taking shape. You should notice a few changes since the last time you saw him.

    I've also been working a little on his warband:

    So we have:
    - The Puritan Inquisitor
    - Storm Trooper Anton Drexler
    - Father Pietro, Hierophant
    - Pit-Gladiator (another pic here)

    I also want to incorporate Deacon Gallowglass and Pyremaster Korbin into this retinue.

    -------

    More to come - and there will be more on the blog this week!

    Wow. I subscribed this to a while ago after glancing at a few pics and thinking it looked interesting, I've just got around to reading through this whole thing.

    Totally amazing stuff, some of your conversions are inspired, the painting is great, your scenery looks ace (more please) and the battle reports are cool too.

    I don't play Inq, but this has definitely inspired me to try and find some people to play Inq28 with. I think the best thing is it really allows to go mad for third party products, I'm always conscious when buying for 40k that if I ever want to enter a tournament the models have to be GW (or at least 50% I think)...so I've never go into the 3rd party stuff; but something like this would really allow to go mad on the modelling and break the tedium of painting squads of the same blokes.

    Once again, thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!
