One of the reasons I signed up to DakkaDakka was the outstanding work on the 'Inquisimunda' craze. I've long been a player of INQ28 - that is, the Inquisitor rules-set using 28mm scale models rather than 54. A bit of a distant cousin to Inquisimunda, I guess, which seems to typically rely on bastardisations of Necromunda and Mordheim (both great games in their own right).
Still, Inq28 and =][=munda, whilst being close cousins, are thematically and aesthetically close enough that this forum can provide me with a lot of inspiration, so hopefully I can return the favour!
Here's some of my more recent work, and hopefully I can maintain semi-regular updates.
First up, my most recent Inquisitor, Inquisitor Hoth. I was looking at the new IG Primaris Psyker model when I realised that in some ways it's aesthetically similar to the Eisenhorn model. I wanted Hoth to bear some of the same aesthetic stylings, so this is my first mock-up of Inquisitor Hoth:
I plan on using a dremel to remove much of the breastplate; in its place I'll likely sculpt a sash. Not sure as to whether I'll be making a longcoat for the legs yet or not.
I've begun work on his retinue, creating an Imperial Guard veteran to go along with Hoth. I wanted something broadly similar to this picture from Codex: Imperialis:
With the release of the Cadian Command Squad, here's my WIP attempt:
I'm currently waiting on an order from GW so hopefully I'll have a few more models for you guys soon!
Along with Inquisitor Hoth and his retinue, at the moment I'm working on a Tzeentchian Cult, which'll be made from Necromunda Redemptionists. I like the irony in using the models, but it's also somewhat the case that Chaos Cultists and the most zealous Imperial Cultists can be very similar indeed. One need only look at the Death Cult Assassins to see that!
Here's the models I managed to find in my bitzbox:
I'm going to do some minor converting, probably adding some small Chaos talismans and the like. Most of the Tzeentchian flavour will come in the painting stages - I see them having purple robes with blue warpfire (instead of the traditional Redemptionist red). I'm possibly going to remove the KKK-esque headgear on the Priest and the Deacon, in which case I'll sculpt some hoods for them.
Thanks! Today I got to take some pictures in sunlight... maybe they might even prompt some more comments!
First up we have a Rogue Trader of some sort, using Kal Jericho and Sergeant Telion (at the moment). I'm still fiddling around with a set-up for the arms.
Here's another WIP of the Tzeentchians. The hoods aren't done; this is just the base GS work I've laid down for them last night. I like how the dynamic of the model(s) has changed so much by taking away their KKK hoods.
A better picture of Inquisitor Hoth:
Hoth's current nemesis, Inquisitor Adorno:
(We'll be seeing some of Adorno's retinue soon, including a daemonhost...)
Also, a surprise I'm working on: A truescale Space Marine...
Ozymandias: Thanks for the comment. The vet is a mishmash of many different pieces. The head is a Krieg Grenadier with a Cadian respirator from the Command set. The torso is a tank commander, the legs are from the Command set. The arms are two different Cadian sets, whilst the lasgun comes from a Necromunda weapons sprue. The rest is just greenstuff (which needs finishing, really).
A bit of an impromptu update, hence the lame pictures, but I stopped fiddling with the truescale marine for today - for my first TS marine, I'm quite pleased:
Very inspirational. I've also been playing INQ with 28 mm figures, and using it as a pen and paper RPG before Dark Heresy existed. Looking forward to seeing more of your crafting skills.
Nice start man! I love all the new Imperial Guard advisor models - currently in HEAVY debate with self on wehther to make the decision to use metal models or not in the Legion project...
smiling Assassin: Yeah, it's the Forgeworld "Solomon Lok" model. A really nice sculpt.
Migsula: Thanks for the comment! I like the Primaris Psyker and the Astropath - I like the Master of the Fleet, too. I just hate the ordnance guy...
Anyway, a few more pictures to show you what I've been fiddling around with this morning:
First up, a mockup of the Rogue. It's not glued, which is why it's slightly wonky.
I've also taken the Yriel of Iyanden model, hoping to make it into a Rogue Trader. It unfortunately appears that I'm going to have to resculpt the legs. It affords me the opportunity to make him more pirate-y, though - I was figuring knee-high boots and the like.
As an Eldar he's slighter than a human, and the Cadian arms I tried didn't really suit - but I tested it with this krieg arm. Even if I don't end up using this Krieg arm, I think FW arms might end up being the best option.
Quick snap of the Truescaled Deathwatch Marine in decent light.
I've also begun work on an Arbites Enforcer. Quite happy how the momentum of the entire model has changed. Here's the original sculpt:
Here's where I'm going with it:
Quite like the head, though it does remind me somewhat of Gordon Ramsay...

what models are these from... necromunda???? if so were can i buy them, they look bitching
I think it's great to see some variety, and the older metal range holds some real gems if you look hard.
Kal's gonna need a bit of work, though. I know he's still work in progress -- perhaps don't use the Cadian Pistol arm? He has two holestered already, but those could be dremelled off. It also looks too...plain for the rest of the model, which looks badass and very hard. The sword looks great.
Great start here mate and a good selection of base models.
While the new metal advisor models are great I have really come to hate GW's IG proportions. The legs are FAR to short making them all look stumby and hobbit like. Especially given GW's current tendancy for very wide, "fat" metal mini's.
I like the idea for basing the RT on Kal, nice choice. Yriel is also on my list for mini's to convert at some point though I have far too much on as it is.
This is looking better and better. For slimmer arms I can reccomend the WH-fantasy Imperial Militia models. They come with lots and lots of goodies and useful parts and a good selection of clothes that looks much less "uniform" than the guard selection.
Apologies for having not updated this thread for a while - I'm a firm believe that blogs should have lots of pics, and I've somewhat let you down on that score! I have been working on models behind the scenes. The campaign I'm planning does have a great number of factions - no less than three cults of varying sizes, to say the least of "official" organisations!
Pictures from my end will be forthcoming soon.
In the meantime I've come to an arrangement with my friend Steve to have him paint a few of my models. I've sent him ten figures to begin with - the retinues of Inquisitors Hoth and Adorno, my truescale Space Marine and a few other things - and so some of the pics I'll be posting up belong to him. For the most part, if you see it, he's painted it, and I've converted it.
And so, to set the tone, his latest WIP. This picture showcases Inquisitor Hoth's Sage and a Cyber-Mastiff belonging to his Arbitrator.
Steve's tackling the "dramatis personae" - some of the main player characters that'll be tearing things up in my Inquisitor campaign. But many of the lackeys and mooks who'll be cannon-fodder ((including those Redemptionists)) for the various sides will be getting done by myself and my friends Darren and Nick.
Hopefully there'll be plenty of eye-candy for you guys!
Steve's stuff is looking good so far, but that's to be expected. I also really like the Ramsay enforcer. I think he should have a mouth on him in the fluff, but that could just be me.
Well, as I'm cleaning up my desk I've started a couple of conversions.
First of all (and simpler) I've got the basis of a Rogue Trader made from the Ibram Gaunt model. I'm missing his sword arm, unfortunately, so I'm looking for that...
Then we've got this model that I'm quite undecided about... I'm not sure what he'll be, so I've got a couple of directions I could go in. Opinions welcomed!
This is the base model as it stands:
I could give it a sword:
Not bad, but the Eldar sword's the only real one I've got that works, unfortunately. I could try to make it an artificer-crafted human sword, primarily through filling in the blade somewhat.
I could give him a revolver instead of his outstretched hand.
I could make his staff into a torch, which is quite cool and very gothic/40k, but GSing the flames could be awkward.
Or I could give him this flamer/inferno pistol (the tip would be reversed so the flames were going the right way).
Or... something else? Opinions welcomed.
I've also been working on another model for the TS Deathwatch... Trying to use up bits, I came up with this. Keep in mind that the helmet, the sight and the handle are all blue-tacked and that's why I haven't cleaned them up:
I've been working on more NPCs for the Inquisitor campaign. This includes a paramilitary group known as the Eagle's Claws. Here's my first prototype. I'm going to paint them in the colours of Fallout 3's Talon Company. They might have the same symbol too.
I finally got to talk to my friend Darren, who is running an Inquisitor called Ferox, and managed to get some models of his warband in progress. He's a better painter than me!
This is his Inquisitor, Ferox:
And his Tech-Priest, Parragus (the blue skin is a result of being auto-sanguinated):
And lastly (for now) a Torturer that I converted for him:
I put together the bits for a Chrono-Gladiator based off the Krieger model:
I've also been toying with making these two Necromunda models a husband and wife team of mercenaries. I think that could give them some cool rules...
that's a lot of characterful models you've got there. i absolutely love the torturer, he looks like the guy who sees himself as an artist that likes to ge his hands dirt (hence no sleeves). you could youse the eldar sword on the trader simply by filing down the soul em and those eldar-fiddly bits between crossguard and edged side of the blade. that would make it look less alien and more arabic.
gwmadman: Thanks for the comment! I was beginning to think it was a little quiet in here. The revolver is from a sprue produced by Heresy Miniatures. I was giventhis one by my friend Darren, but I'm given to believe it comes with model HSF021 'Bane'. Hope that helps!
Two new updates from Steve's desk - this is Sylus Tem, Hoth's Sage, and the Cyber-Mastiff that accompanies Arbitrator Titus Dio.
I actually changed the Telion/Jericho model a bit before I sent it off to Steve to paint it, but I foolishly forgot to photograph it. The sword is taken from the new Cadian Command Squad, though.
Thanks for the comment!
EDIT:
@TheMightyWarhamster: I'm sorry I didn't see your post! I see the Torturer in a very, very similar vein - that coldly calculating madman who sees his craft as an art. I also like your ideas regarding the sword; I'll definitely give it some thought.
Automatically Appended Next Post: An update from Steve's desk:
Done a bit of work on Mourn, a feral world merc. Not much, but it's a start. Got the old man visiting tomorrow so there probably won't be any updates on him until monday.
And here's the fluff I wrote for Mourn's character:
The warrior known as Mourn was born upon a feral world upon which religious deviancy was rife. The efforts of Imperial Missionaries to impose order upon these deviant tribal superstitions had only limited success. Many attended Ecclesiarchal services and yet still paid their dues to witch-doctors and holy men. The young warrior grew up dedicating his kills to an Emperor figure who was but part of a pantheon, assailed on all sides by mischievous fellows.
In this ignorance and simplicity lies an open-mindedness and acceptance Adorno has found useful - perhaps even welcome. Mourn knows all too well that the universe is a cold and savage place, home to all manner of malevolent creatures that must be crushed by any means necessary.
Though initially unnerved by his transition to civilisation, he has come to thrive, Imperial technology simply providing him with better and better ways to kill. Mourn is fierce and callous, accustomed to death and fully prepared to carry out the Inquisitor's orders - no matter how distasteful or questionable they may seem.
Also, here's the retinue of Inquisitor Balthier, who'll be run by a friend of mine:
First off, Nick's retinue - that of Inquisitor Balthier
Inquisitor Balthier:
Alaric Balthier is an Amalathian Inquisitor, dedicated to preserving the Imperium so that the Emperor may be afforded the
ability to bring His plans to completion. A member of the Ordo Hereticus, Balthier has brought several high-profile cults to account for their heresies. Balthier is also infamous for prosecuting his fellow Inquisitors for their actions. This has led some Inquisitors to be wary around Balthier; his supporters claim that only those with something to hide should be afraid of his methods.
Salem "Slim" Rios, Gunfighter:
Salem Rios was born on a dreary, insignificant agri-world, though he won't tell you its name. His only distraction from the dull routine of the farm was trick-shooting with his father's old PDF-issue laspistol; the young Salem sought excitement and the exotic, and soon escaped on a merchant vessel before travelling to a larger Imperial world. His skill as a shot was his only asset, and he quickly made a career as a gunslinger and marksman, battling in elaborate arenas for the amusement of the noble classes. However, an incident involving the Planetary Governor's daughter on the eve of her wedding quickly brought Rios's glittering career to an end. He was slated to be executed when Inquisitor Balthier stepped in to commute the sentence - provided Rios began to work for him. The relationship between the grim, irascible Inquisitor and the jovial trickshooter is a strained one at times, but 'Slim' Rios has proved his worth on numerous occasions.
Dariel Rourke, Pathfinder and Sniper:
Dariel Rourke was born on the world of Ghalithrai, an industrial world that had erupted into civil war. Rourke served in the PDF forces as a marksman and scout, excelling in the cramped, rubble-strewn streets. His modified long-rifle attracted the ire of the regiment's tech-adepts, but served Balthier well during the assault on a nascent cult. Balthier left Ghalithrai to rebuild, but took Rourke with him. Rourke is a simple man; grim, tenacious and dedicated. He prizes duty and obligation, and it was a simple act for him to switch his loyalty from his superior officers to the Inquisitor.
Ishamel Castor, Warrior-Priest:
Ishmael Castor is a devoted adherent of the Imperial Creed. Born to the shrine-world of Roiscant, Castor is a veritable encyclopaedia of knowledge on the exploits of the Sainted Xenoscourge, Jerido. Indeed, Castor carries a bone with him reputed to be the fingerbone of the legendary Saint himself. Of course, it is said that if all the 'bones of Jerido' were brought together in one location, they could make up the skeletons of several hundred people. Such trifling details do little to deter Castor, who sets about his duties with great abandon, reveling in his great fortune to serve a mighty Inquisitor. Skilled with languages and other obscure pieces of knowledge, Castor has proven of great use to the Inquisitor, his indomitable enthusiasm to echo his hero Jerido helping him through many tight spots during his tenure with Balthier.
Here's an example of exactly what i've been looking for. A heavy flamer for a space marine, which looks sufficiently beefy enough and quite imposing. The versions for the new plastic catachan's sprue, are basically a wide flamer in my oppinion. I'm assuming the heavy flamer was from the sentinel's sprue, and the back pack from the devastator's multi-melta? I'm currently putting together a Salamander's Sternguard unit, running 2 of those bad boys, and the rest combi-meltas, with Vulkan in the middle. Hot enough for most I guess?
Thanks! I think it's a pretty easily-replicatable conversion that would work in a normal power-armoured Marine. The flamer is definitely from a sentinel, and the backpack/hose is from the multi-melta, yes. The right (his right) arm is from a bolter Marine (I had to cut a bit out of the flamer) whilst the left arm is from a lascannon, I believe. The hand was taken from a chaos marine with sword, though an easy replacement could be found.
Be sure to link me to your version when you make it!
In the meantime, here's some models from another of the retinues that'll be featuring in our campaign - that of Inquisitor Ferox. The paintjobs are by my friend Darren, who'll be running them - the Torturer is converted by me.
Hey Dave, thanks for the interest. It's actually a little bit from the cities of death sprues with the spikes cut off. Not being a plasticard maestro like yourself, I just made do with the first thing I could find that was about the appropriate size!
By the way - our group's looking forward to making a truck like yours for our Inquisitor games - with some modifications it'll make a great civilian vehicle like the farming truck shown in the Inquisitor book.
Hey guys, I'm sorry for having not updated these past few days. Steve's busy working on a daemonhost for Inquisitor Adorno's retinue, so hopefully I can share shots of it with you.
In other news, I've put up an INQ28 BLOG online. Please check it out! I'd definitely appreciate it.
I'm loving it all. The great thing about INQ28 is that there are so many great conversion possibilities. You've inspired me to try my hand at it as soon as I've done enough to my Guard army!
Hey, thanks for the comment. I hope it is inspirational! I think that cross-pollenation of ideas is the greatest asset the GW web community can give us. It's also why I've set up the blog - to provide a sort of a hub for INQ28. When you get around to it, be sure to message me or email me and I'll put a link to your work into the blog!
Talking of the blog, I've added a new update. Pictures are here, but for further details be sure to check the blog out!
Thanks, Myrlyn! I appreciate your comment very much.
I've been waiting for a mail order from Games Workshop for a few days now, and it's finally arrived this morning. The order contained Tomb Queen Khalida and The Mighty Zug inside.
I've set about converting Khalida in an attempt to de-mummify her. It's going pretty well thus far, as you can see:
To a degree I've been influenced by 'Rosethorn Now', the 2006 Golden Daemon-winning squad entry by Migsula. I'm considering making my Khalida into something like a psyker or something.
I've also started working on fluff for my Mighty Zug character. I've been pondering whether or not to remove the belt he's wearing, but if I keep it it looks rather like the sort of prize belts that wrestlers and boxers wear. I imagined it might be a belt from an Imperial Guard's regimental boxing challenge or somesuch. The Mighty Zug model is massive - the Mighty Zug in Blood Bowl fluff is supposed to be around seven feet tall! I figured that rumours might have him being half-Ogryn, though it's never been proven one way or the other. He tends to knock people out who ask him about it... but then he tends to knock most people out!

Well, thank you for the comment! I often hear that INQ28 is 'Inquisitor on a shoestring', but I think it's important that INQ28 has its own footing, rather than being the illegitimate, inferior sibling to INQ54.
Out of interest, though, I'd love it if I could get an issue number for that White Dwarf? Thanks in advance. I did see on Kendoka's site Pega had managed to green-stuff a 28mm Covenant, 28mm Slick Devlan and a 28mm Damien 1247 which I've always found amazing. Alas, I don't have those sorts of skills!
Sure thing
while your online
ill go fetch the WD now its around about 2 years old might be able to get it on ebay or something

Automatically Appended Next Post: It is
White DWarf Issue 317 May
I hope you can get it sadly it doesnt show you his conversions just his finished models the models he converts to 28mm are:
Tyrus
Crash
Malicant
Barbaretta
Acolyte
Veteran
Penitent
Warrior
Ah, thanks - I do have #317 and I checked out Ben Cartwright's models. I like what he did to make Barbaretta - the 40k/Fantasy scales are somewhat lacking of nice female models. The Malicant is quite nice, too, though I don't really like his Crash Thraxx that much.
Thanks for the heads up, though, Abhorsen - I really appreciate looking at other INQ28 work.
Ah, well I post different things in each of the different INQ28 threads - there's a thread on the Ammobunker, B+C, the Conclave, Dakka Dakka and Warseer. Obviously I have to be careful on the B+C that all my models are (or can be explained away as) choices from the Daemonhunter/Witchhunter codices.
In the meantime, I've continued work on my Khalida model; here's where I'm at so far.
Beautiful GS and Kitbask work! I've been weighing the value of starting up INQ28 myself and your thread and stunning work may have just tipped me over the fence in the right direction. I love personalized minis but there's just not a lot of chance for them in standard games of 40K. INQ28 highly appeals to me for that reason and now you've really inspired me to go pick up the free set of rules hanging around the internet.
Of course, the only downside would be that I'd have to pin a tonne of crap so that I could change a mini's appearance as he grows "Moar Leet"

Thanks for the comment! Be sure to check out the INQ28 Blog for more - I've actually just posted up my first "featured models" article, with the INQ28 work of Kaled. If you do get into INQ28, and you have some cool stuff to show, I'll gladly post it up in the blog.
I think 40k has as much scope for personalisation as you want there to be - counts as is a powerful thing. It's just Inquisitor lends itself more in that direction.
As for character development, that's down to the group, though characters don't tend to change that much in the short space of times that campaigns generally represent (at least, that's been my experience) - it's also a reason that Inquisitor doesn't have an experience system or the like.
devilkin wrote:great work on khalida
Thanks! I've been a bit distracted over the weekend, but I've done a little bit more to her today (and in fact I've done a bit more since)
I'm developing some fluff that has her as a death cult assassin, but I'll probably post it on the INQ28 blog once I've developed it properly.
Hey, Dante - thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it. I worked out some fluff for the Khalida model (or Elspeth Le Kard, as she's now known) and that's up on the INQ28 blog. Today I've been tidying and fiddling around with a few conversions - some of which will eventually go up on my ordinary 40k forum thread.
This one, though, might prove more interesting:
I'm still not sure what to do with it, but it's been an interesting diversion. I was thinking somewhat of the film Kingdom of Heaven, with the King with Leprosy who wears the silver mask. I imagined he might be an Inquisitor with a disfigured face of some kind... not sure.
Also, I've been working on this guy:
I've been working off a concept suggested in 'Bloody Work is its Own Reward' by Ben Dell, wherein a Daemonhunter is gifted warp-sight by a Daemonette. I was thinking that this guy was a Guardsman, but never particularly suited to it. He doesn't just blindly follow orders, he instead sees the shades of grey (somewhat of a useful quality that makes him useful to the Inquisition). I'm still fiddling with the concept but I'm sure it'll come to something eventually.
Lastly, Steve's sent this PIP pic:
Done a bit of work on the Daemonhost, not much though as aside from a few games of DOW2 with Mol at the weekend i've been feeling under the weather the last few days.
The metals are pretty much done, i'll be onto the skin next, then hopefully a finish in the next couple of days.
Another two conversions that I forgot to put up yesterday. I've always liked the concept of Gav Thorpe's character, Mechsimus Oirelius:
I've begun working on my own version of the character. Here's where I am at the moment; I'm still in the middle of green-stuffing, which is why the right (our right) sleeve is much better than the left.
What I want to do is to alter the flagellant's mask to make it more sci-fi, and then to just GS up the other sleeve.
Also, I've been somewhat inspired by Kaled to include a Rogue Trader model in my INQ28 endeavours. I managed to find #070510/40 "Bolta 10". To my mind, he looks nothing like a modern-day Ork, and that's where I began to get the idea to make him into a different species of alien. The model's details have been slightly softened and deformed which is why I had to replace the barrel of the gun. I then took off the ears and some fur on his back.
The only question will be what colour he is! In order to differentiate him from Orks, green is obviously out. I had been giving some thought to making him orange or yellow, but I don't know right now.
Things have been a bit quiet the past few days for my INQ28 stuff. I've been working on statlines for Inquisitor Adorno and his retinue, which you can find in this thread on Warseer. El_Diablo has expressed a desire to work on the retinue of Inquisitor Adorno (Adorno, Seraphael and Mourn) so that I can play some games with them.
Today, though, I woke up to find that El_Diablo had posted a new painted model in the Ammobunker INQ28 thread; a Hierophant. Now I've always loved this model, and foolishly traded mine away years ago. El_Diablo managed to find a (slightly mangled) Hierophant missing its blade in his bitz-box, and has restored it with a plastic chainsword blade from a Chaos Space Marine.
El_D said that this is probably his favourite paintjob thus far on our INQ28 models, and it's easy to see why. The model is just bursting with character - that face is amazing! Every time I see the model, I see new details. And the funniest thing is that I hadn't planned for this model - I have to work out a spot for him in one of my retinues!
A brilliant model to wake up to, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Wehrkind - Thanks for your comment! The Arbitrator, Titus Dio, is in the list to be painted. One of the things that I regret is that I didn't take enough pictures of my conversions before I sent them off to be painted, so I've had to stick with showing you the models as he works through them (though to be fair he's getting through them at an incredible pace!)
Here's Mourn, the feral-worlder in Adorno's retinue:
The conversion went through a couple of stages - at one stage, I gave him a laspistol, before settling on the shotgun because I thought it gave the model a nice "shape". It makes me think somewhat of the Predator; in a way it looks like he's hefting a spear or a javelin.
the feral dude turned out great! what did you use as a base model?
one small point: the decapitated head looks very clean, it might profit from some dead staring eyes and some blood spatters.
I'll echo Migs on the bases though. Also, the severed head looks a bit fake, it could use some more detail and blood spatter...and eyes. At the moment it looks a little prosthetic.
Hey, guys. I really appreciate the comments (and actually getting some comments!)
@ TheMightyWarhamster: Thanks for the comments on Mourn! The model is actually a Necromunda Bounty Hunter, released by Fanatic but only for a short time. You can see a picture of the model here. It comes with a stonkingly huge bolter/grenade launcher combi-weapon. It's a cool gun (I've saved it for a Space Marine!) but a little over-sized for him. The model actually went through a couple of stages. First of all I used a plastic laspistol from a Cadian Sergeant, but then I went for this pose, using the metal hand and stock from a Necromunda multi-part Goliath ganger and a resin shotgun from Forgeworld. I felt that it gave the model a nice "shape". Also, with his armour and the way that he looks hefting the shotgun (almost like he was hefting a spear or javelin) he reminds me very much of the Predator!
@ Edward089: Thanks for the comments (and the rules-related comments, too!) - With regards to his armour, some of it is clearly carapace, but I'm not totally sure. You can check my Conclave thread for Inquisitor Adorno and Retinue if you'd like to air your thoughts!
@ Migsula: Thanks for the comment. I hear you on the bases. Obviously the painting is down to Steve, but I felt that simple bases work best for the game. At the end of the day they're gaming miniatures!
@ Inquisitor Lord Slade: Thanks, I'll be sure Steve sees the compliment.
@ CMDante: Thanks, Dante - I appreciate the comment. Your daemonette-pleasuregirl was one of the models that enticed me back into INQ28. I wish I had a model like her!
@ Modhail: More...?
Well, here you go: WIP painted pictures of Inquisitor Adorno! The first warband reaches completion.
Adorno is the basic Solomon Lok model from Inquisitor, entirely unconverted. I think Simon Egan and Will Hayes did a great job with the model, and I knew I wanted to include it in some way. When we first started fiddling with INQ28 a couple of years ago, we used the Witch-hunter Crusader model as an Inquisitor - the robed look was entirely fitting, we thought. Solomon Lok's model continues that look.
When Steve asked for painting guidance, my only real request was that he make the model "sinister" as opposed to the more "righteous" look of Solomon Lok, and that he have pale skin, the result of Seraphael possessing him. He suggested using dark metal armour, deep red on the sashes and a black coat - a more evil use of the classic Inquisitor colour palette which would contrast with the skin well.
Here are Steve's comments and the painted picture:
Made a bit of headway on Adorno, the first of the Inquisitors. I wanted to go for quite a dark scheme throughout, only using brighter spot colours. Strangely enough, i've gone with red. Funny that.
Quite pleased with the face on this guy, again built up with washes and glazes over an Astronomican Grey basecoat to tie him with the Daemonhost.
Considering the amount of detail on this guy im quite a way through him - only major area left is the coat then it's all detail work. As much as i'd like to say i'd finish him today, it'll probably be monday/tuesady.
As our group draws closer to the campaign to determine the fate of Nova Castille, it's finally coaxing some of our more recalcitrant hobbyists to get out the paintbrushes. My friend Nick, who's going to be leading the puritan Inquisitor Alaric Balthier to (hopeful) victory, has begun to work on his retinue.
His aim is to use red as a unifying colour throughout the retinue, in different ways. He brought me these models today, and I managed to get a few quick low-quality snaps as the light faded.
Here's Ishamel Castor, (WIP) Warrior-Priest and Xenoscourge:
"Slim" Rios, Gunslinger:
And lastly, Balthier. Nick said he toyed with the red, and painted the model as-is just because he had the red open... but we've been talking today about colour theories and the distribution of paint across the model, so he's giving it some thought.
Meanwhile, inspired by Mypunkrockisbetterthanyou's Warseer thread, I fiddled with a few bits to start work on an Imperial Beastman who might fit into the retinue of one of my Inquisitors.
It's a gor (or ungor? I don't know enough about Beastmen) head with the horns shaved off and smoothed down, put on a Catachan heavy weapons body. I need to get some more Catachan bits to finish him off (I'll probably have to get a Command Squad, not sure...) but he strikes me as an interesting character.
It would? Yeah, I guess I can see that... I like the looks of the new Straken model, though - I think GW did a pretty good job with it. I'm definitely considering getting it at some stage.
This afternoon Nick stopped around mine and finished up Ishmael Castor, warrior-priest. Part of Inquisitor Balthier's retinue, he's a pretty fun guy.... if you're into discussing the intricacies of Imperial religious texts!
He's constructed from a Fantasy Empire Warrior-Priest with a Revolver (and gun) from the Necromunda Goliath gang. It's a true "hand cannon", a ridiculously massive revolver - which is part of what makes it cool, I suppose! The Inquisitorial symbol from his hammer comes from the Forgeworld brass-etch symbol sheet.
Well, today we get to see the forces of Inquisitor Ferox, a radical belonging to the Recongregators who'll be causing havoc in the forthcoming Nova Castille campaign. He'll be played by my friend Darren, and indeed these models are painted by him.
Inquisitor Ferox, Radical Recongregator. He originally had a pistol in his outstretched hand, but after Darren and I revised Ferox's character concept, we went instead for him using his formidable psychic powers instead. The hand is taken from a classic Necromunda Ratskin Chieftain.
Ferox's Acolyte, Raef; He's made from a Vostroyan officer with a head from the Cadian Command Squad. The pose has been enhanced by sawing the bolt pistol arm and reattaching it at a more natural angle:
The (as-yet unamed) Torturer and Medic working for Ferox. He should be obvious; a mix of Cadian and Catachan command squad parts:
I wanted to create a Space Marine to feature in our Inquisitor games. He's really going to be mostly used as a Weapon of Mass Destruction, and will only feature in the latter stages of the campaign, though I have entertained thoughts of creating a Deathwatch Kill-Team and using Movie Marine rules to run a 300-esque "Holding the Hot Gates" game against a horde of Orks...
Inquisitor entails far greater detail, and much more attention is given to the figures in question. If a Space Marine were to feature in our Inquisitor campaign, I'd want them to be massive, as befits the Adeptus Astartes. I was in a rush to meet a(n admittedly somewhat self-imposed) deadline to send my INQ28 models to El_Diablo. This, coupled with the fact that this particular model was my first attempt at "true-scaling", meant that he was a little rough around the edges. El_Diablo smoothed out my green-stuffing just a tad before proceeding with the paint. He decided on a weathered look for his power armour, befitting his assignment to the Deathwatch. The Ordo Xenos accepts highly-skilled Marines into its ranks - they are an elite within an elite, forever marked by their experiences. Or, as El_D put it, he's the type of Marine '...that would headbutt a Carnifex just for giggles.'
When I made the Marine, I wanted to pay tribute to El_Diablo for helping me with the INQ28 project. As a result, I made him a Veteran of the Sword Bearers, his DIY Chapter. In fact, it was his Sword Bearers project that first caught my eye, and started a meaningful working relationship and friendship that I'm most appreciative of. (Sniff sniff!) It also gave El_D an opportunity to paint red - the color he's most known for!
I love all your models, great stuff. The marine looks good, but I think you (or ElDiablo) might have overdone the chips on the armour a little bit. Less is more. It kind of looks a little cartoony rather than gritty and realistic, which I'd imagine is what you were after if you were chipping the armour?
infilTRAITOR wrote:That marine is un-freakin'-believable! Too bad it's a loyalist
Hey, infilTRAITOR. Thanks for the response! It's really appreciated. And actually, I am giving some thought to a Chaos Truescale Marine. The main opponent in the INQ28 campaign is going to be a Tzeentchian Cult, and they could always get the sponsorship of a Thousand Son... (or Tzeentch could gift them, whatever.) And if you look at the Sword Bearer, you can make out the slight remains of a blue-and-gold shoulderpad on his base!
get to the chopper! wrote:I love all your models, great stuff. The marine looks good, but I think you (or ElDiablo) might have overdone the chips on the armour a little bit. Less is more. Hey, thanks for the feedback. I had to think about this for a few days. I don't think that he's overly scratched up (insofar as that I think it enhances his "gritty" image.) I think that El_Diablo has quite a bright painting style. Not cartoony by any stretch, but vivid. I personally like it, but I know that everyone has different tastes.
A new update! Inquisitor Balthier is going to be one of the key characters in our forthcoming INQ28 campaign. Here's the latest pictures:
I've also been working on a squad of five Enforcers; hopefully I'll be able to take a picture of them soon.
Meanwhile, in other news, I had enough cash left over from payday in order to order a model from Eolith Miniatures: The Hurk model is designed to be a small model at 54mm scale, but at 27mm tall he'll fit perfectly amongst my INQ28 stuff, I reckon.
Here he is:
I'm going to be looking at him with an eye to converting him to better fit into 40k - which will probably entail a weapon swap or two... I liked the idea of including a minor race never really seen on the grand 40k battlefields. I did wonder whether to co-opt the Scythian race, perhaps most famous for killing the first Chapter Master of the Crimson Fists. They're apparently a race of warrior-monks that favour poisoned weapons. I did consider giving him some form of crossbow-type weapon, or a bizarre energy-based pistol.
As far as painting, I did get the image of some of these poisonous frogs:
Chopper: As these are playing models (and for Inquisitor rather than 40k) they'll be on normal 28mm bases. I think so far only the truescale Space Marines have been on larger bases.
Deff Dread: Thanks for the comments. I am slowly working on a full ten-man Kill-team; I might put up a seperate thread for them at some stage.
Automatically Appended Next Post: So, Hurk arrived from Eolith. A really nice model. The sculpting is really crisp:
Also, I mentioned that I'd been working on some Enforcers, and here's a little bit of proof:
My aim is for a five-man patrol team featuring a Proctor with power maul and laspistol, a Judge with shotgun, a Judge with grenade launcher (and various gas grenades) and then two Judges with power mauls and suppressiion shields.
A bit of a digression today - I found this model on my desk and it fell beneath my knife! It's the Escher with Heavy Plasma Gun with the Heavy stubber from the other Escher Heavy. I then started working on changing the Heavy Stubber into a flamer; it struck me as something an Inquisitorial henchman might carry.
The model is quite heavily blu-tacked, so bear with the unsightly bend in the flamer! The plastic nozzle on the flamer will go to a fuel tank on her back.
I've posted before about Arbitrator Titus Dio, though I don't expect you guys to remember him! He's part of Inquisitor Hoth's retinue. Based off a Necromunda Enforcer model, here's the stage I'd gotten him to:
It progressed a bit further than this before I sent it off, but I forgot to take pictures. I sent it off, and Steve promptly took it apart and fiddled with the model a bit to get a bit more from the pose. Today he sent me the fruits of his labours:
There's obviously still some GSing to be done, but the new pose gives the model quite a cocksure attitude, I think.
There is some really impressive stuff here, Molotov! I'm looking forward to more of your work, and even moreso to details from your Inq28 game. I've got an =][=Munda campaign in the works, so I'm always on the lookout for ideas to commandeer. Thanks for the inspiration, I'm currently subscribing to your threads on a few of the other forums as well.
Thanks very much, Shane! I really appreciate the comment. I got the painted pics of Titus from Steve a few days ago, so here he is; his cyber-mastiff is iposted earlier in the thread.
I have been dying to try some 28mm inq - your posts may have provided the kick in the ass I need to paint up some cultists and try and get the knuckleheads from sprue posse to play a game.
Somehow seeing him painted really drives home the improvement made by the slight posture change. You might have finally, single-handedly with this fig, motivated me to try to improve my greenstuffing skills to the point where I can do little pose changes and whatnot. If so, I thank you!
Thanks so much for the comments, guys. Somnicide; I hope that this does inspire you! If you produce any INQ28 models please be sure to let me know, because I could well find inspiration in return! Also, it would be awesome to feature the work of other INQ28 hobbyists on the INQ28 blog.
Shane - thanks for the feedback. I think Titus is an example of a conversion that ends up looking very naturalistic - almost as though he was meant to be in that pose! My GS skills are pretty basic (I'm no excellent sculpter) but I have the imagination... so I just try to come up with results that match the image in my head.
Here's another model I've been working on -- Ihe Inquisitor rulebook is this awesome picture:
Well, I have this thus far:
I like the Varren model, but the head/shoulder arrangement has always annoyed me a little. To me he looks a bit too much like a Sontaran from Doctor Who:
I've been wondering about carefully removing the head and replacing it; at the moment I'm considering using this priest, as the head/goggles help capture the spirit of the original illustration without rigidly conforming to it:
Well, one of the best parts of the original model is the cabling ot the back of the head, IMO. The head looks shruggy and immobile partly because of the pose. Altering the gun hand to be pointing in the direction that he's looking might reduce that effect a bit.
Love your stuff, looking forward to seeing where this mini goes.
There are some seriously sweet minis in here, I am going to have to steal some of your ideas. Great work! I am looking forward to seeing more from you.
Qualude: I'm glad you like the Marine. I have actually started work on a ten-man truescale Deathwatch Kill-Team, though work on that has halted for now.
Savnock: Oh, I appreciate that "in real life" Varren likely would have full motion of his head. A lot of people have commented on the hoses. They're interesting enough, and they fit Varren's role as a pilot (I imagine they help him to interface with the Machine-Spirits of his craft) but they don't really fit the character I want to create, so I'm afraid they have to go! I hadn't considered him pointing his weapon straight forward, but I'm not sure about it. This character will likely remain on the bench for most of January whilst I wait for a sculpter friend to help me out with him; I just wanted to show him off and get some feedback.
Hey guys. Today I received a package from Games Workshop containing a few interesting things. One of them was a Necromunda Enforcers team, which allows me to finish off my Arbite Patrol Team (which will be used later on in the Nova Castille campaign). I also got te priest I mentioned in my last post, which has allowed me to continue work on my Inquisitorial agent-type fellow. I'll admit, I haven't quite worked out who he is, but he should look cool when he gets completed.
As you can see, I've managed to separate the head from the body, and it's a fairly decent match for Varren's head. In truth, I'm starting to realise that the Varren body may not actually be the best bet for making this character, given the copious chest armour Varren wears, and the straps-and-buckles look of the character in the illustration.
By contrast, the head is almost perfect, and I really like it.
Of course, after having removed the head from the Priest, I didn't want to just get rid of the body, so I've tried to re-work it into a possible INQ28 character.
Whereas the original model is "striding forwards purposefully", I sawed into the forward foot slightly and bent the model forwards to make it look like he's launching himself into the fray with little regard for the consequences.
The model's not finished - it needs greenstuffing and the like, but it's a fairly successful spur-of-the-moment conversion based on the bits I had to hand, and he's quite characterful. I've given some thought to removing the winged skull on his chainsword, but then perhaps the character is an ex-Guardsman using his old weaponry...?
Staying on the religious front, some of you may remember Ishmael Castor, the priest used by my friend Nick in Inquisitor Balthier's retinue. If not, you can see pictures in this post. Unfortunately, Ishmael's gone missing, and none of us can find him. WIth a heavy heart he's been consigned to the "lost forever" pile. Whilst there's a chance he'll turn up as soon as I finish the conversion, I've begun work on a second Ishmael so that Balthier's retinue can join the battle for Nova Castille as soon as possible.
I think I can speak for staunch devotees of the Imperial Cult everywhere when I say that we all feel the loss of Ishmael very keenly, and wish you a speedy re-conversion so we can get to reading some battle reports.
Seriously though, I'm loving what you've done with the priest's leftover body. You call it a simple conversion, but it's a really neat fig. I love the way he's sweeping forward, throwing himself into the fray. Arrogant? Reckless? Furious? It suggests a lot of character.
Thanks for the comment, Shane. It is certainly appreciated.
In other news, I found some hands for my Hurk model.
I gave some thought as to why the pommel of his dagger had a human skull on it - I came to the idea that it might be a gift from the Inqusitor he works with. As a result, I've attached a brass-etch Inquisition symbol to the scabbard of his blade to show that his work is sanctioned by the Inquisitor in question. Not a fantastic picture, but it should come out in the painting stage:
Cheers mate I've been planning to select a few models and do some modellng for an Inquisitors Retinue. Now you've inspired me to bug other people about doing an Inquisitor 28mm campaign.
Hurk, when I first saw your model, I wasn't sure what Molotov saw in it. It seemed very static to me, almost wooden. Now though, seeing the model get closer to the painting stage, I'm impressed. Again I'm shown how something as small as a hand swap can completely change a model. So I'm sorry, Hurk. I'm joining your fan club now.
Saul was intended to be a "rogue", a bit of a Han Solo-esque character who was ex-Imperial Navy and who had a lot of scrapes and adventures and who had fallen in with Inquisitor Hoth. A lot of people who've seen him seem to think he's a rogue trader, and whilst I've shown some resistance to the idea I'm not so sure now.
Steve was discussing his ideas of the model recently:
Im starting to get a picture in my head of how he's going to look and I think it might work. I like the idea of the dark blue coat. That with a white undershirt (just poking out of the collar of the coat) and the coat chain painted gold will give enough of a nod to a Naval background, while the rest of his clothing would be more rugged and combat ready. I love the little quirks on this guy, the bionic fist will be a nice counterpoint the a white dress glove on the other hand for example.
I have to admit though, that after not seeing the model for a little while, I'm a little unsure about it. I'm not sure whether the model is visually unbalanced - that is, whether it looks "wrong". I need new opinions on the models, so your feedback is entirely welcomed!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here's two more pictures which I think help illustrate the model far better:
Automatically Appended Next Post: And for those who might be interested, here's a picture of Titus Dio and his Cyber-Mastiff:
That's Kal Jericho with a head swap, yeah? At the risk of sounding like a Yes-Man/Molotov fanboy, I really dig the new head on him. Between that and what's left of Kal, he looks grizzled and seedy to me. I'd definitely keep the mini, but I think the original direction is good for him. No need to switch him over to a Rogue Trader unless the story calls for one, in my mind.
It is indeed the Kal Jericho figure with a headswap - in this case, the head from Ultramarines Scout Sergeant Telion. The plastic sword/hand is from the Cadian Command Squad, whilst the plastic scabbard is (I belive) from the Catachan Heavy Weapons box. It might not be, I can't swear to it...
The little Eldar charm on his coat (which should become more visible in the painting) is from the "Yriel of Iyanden" model.
Thanks for the comments, guys - especially you, Dante! I appreciate the reply.
I've put up an INQ28 battlereport here on the blog, which I hope you'll find interesting.
In the meantime, I have been doing some work:
I have here half a forgeworld servo-skull which should become the head for an arco-flagellant, the head and torso for my investigator character and the head and torso for my Imperial Guard beastman character.
I was pleased when we managed to make a decent Daemonhost from the ugly GW sculpt, and I want to do something similar for the Arco-Flagellants. Steve's got a box of the metal arco-flagellants and is looking at them with a view to redeeming them, whilst at the moment I'm advocating an approach based off the plastic ghouls.
I want to create something similar to Damien. He's a hugely dynamic model. It looks as though it would take a supreme effort to stop him when he's charging towards a foe - bullets would have little effect on this drugged-up living weapon. Damien's flails also help to give him that bit of movement, whilst in the 40k models, the electro-flails almost counteract any sense of dynamicism - they just look like they're waving them around whilst trying to walk like an Egyptian.
I think that the body on the right is useable - it seems to be in a pretty decent pose. What I'd want to do is to complete the head conversion I've been working on and replace the head, and then try to work out something in the arms that'd help the model look as though it's moving quickly.
I'm liking how the investigator is shaping up. That head and neckerchief are brilliant (one of my fav sculpts) and once you get the trench coat look going, it should be rocking!
Also, IG beastman is a masterstroke, I remember these guys from back in the day, though the old figs always looked so out of place in guard armies!
I think the key with him will be to try to under-play the bestial side slightly and have him kitted out like a trooper, but with the obvious goat face, horns and legs of a beastman. Looking forward to seeing him progress.
Finally, the acro-flagellant. Good call on the FW servo skull for a head, the techy bits on the back of these match the art in the =I= rule book very well and are also extremely detailed.
I've seen some nice conversions based on the ghoul parts for these guys, though I always feel that the ghoul legs are quite short and the bodies too long for them. Fine for hideous undead abominations, but for actual humans, they look a little off IMO.
The metal flagellant that you have indicated does indeed have potential, though you are right that new arms are needed. A bundle of thin guitar strings and ghoul/flagellant parts for arms perhaps?
Dante, thanks for the comments. The investigator is on hold, I'm just waiting for a sculptor to free up so they can make the model like the artwork.
I'm glad you like the beastman so much. After you post, I checked out this:
I can see what you mean about them standing out, but I suppose it was deliberate - to emphasise their inhumanity. As it is, I'm of a similar opinion to you - to underplay the bestial side. My plan is to use catachan components (from the command squad, most likely) for the arms and legs, and to have him carrying a (possibly slightly battered) standard-issue Imperial Guard lasgun. Something akin to this squad. At first glance, you might not immediately notice just what's wrong with this fellow, which I think also emphasises that he's "different" to humans, and that mutation is insidious. It's somewhat fitting for a Beastman who has been employed by the Inquisition.
I'm not the hugest fan of the backwards-jointed beastman legs, especially when combined with Imperial Guard pieces (this being an example). I think painting him with a slightly ruddy skintone will also help convey the abhuman nature of the Beastman.
As for the Ghouls, I looked at some WIP pictures of ghouls on the internet and I've seen what you mean about the bodies. They've got an incredible hunch, which'll prove almost impossible to turn into a decent sprinting pose. It looks as though converting a metal arco-flagellant will be the route I go down.
Thanks for the feedback! It's definitely given me something to think about.
True, but I think he becomes a bit less of a beastman and more of a mutant if he doesn't have the backwards jointed legs.
If you put fatigues over the top half of the legs (to the knee) either using GS, or simply using that section of catachan legs, and then had the double joint from an ungor below that, I think it would still look enough like a guardsman rather than a fantasy beastman with a lasgun and cadian helmet (as all the others tend to be).
You could shred the area of the trousers at the knee to make it look like it was a quick "modification" to standard guard issue kit.
The idea for the skintone sounds good. In my mind I see him having very pale skin (almost a kind of sickly white), with very dark fur (for contrast).
Either way, I'm sure he'll turn out nicely if what you have so far is anything to go by!
this thread rocks, you sir have inspired me to make my inquisitor and retune *i could say it was because read the eisenhorn books and i own a daemonhunters codex* BUTSTILL! inquisitors have some dirty tricks do slap up a chaos daemons army
Thanks for the comment, physcosamatic! I think the Inquisition allows you to explore some of the more evocative aspects of the 40k universe.
At the moment, the Arco-Flagellant concepts are on the backbench and other concepts and ideas have shifted to the foreground.
Yesterday, inspired by Kaled's female tech-priest, I began converting the Sister from the Witch-hunters retinue box into a member of the Machine cult. It's WIP at the moment (the most obvious part missing is the hood) but I hope you can see where I'm heading. At the moment I'm trying to give her robes somewhat like the Imperial Guard Enginseers.
Hey guys, thanks for the comments (I really appreciate them.) Totenkopf - I'm not sure what you mean...?
Here's the latest on my female Tech-Priest; I had a bit of trouble with the hood but this version isn't looking too bad:
I've also been studying the Enginseers for more design cues - I think I'm going to have to rework her shoulders a little bit:
I've also ordered a bunch of stuff from Forgeworld that should feature soon - the Elysian Tauros Venator, the Cadian Squad with Respirators (the heads are spare!) and the Titan Tech-Priest. Expect to see them once FW delivers!
The only points system in Inquisitor is the ready reckoner at the back of the rulebook, which is useless. It's only a guide, and in Inquisitor there's really nothing to stob a hive juve with a revolver going up against a Space Marine Terminator. (After all, sometimes the best stories aren't fair!)
The only thing that comes into play is common sense, which isn't always that common! Luckily, I'm fortunate to have a sensible group of players that help me out.
The groups I've tentatively worked up at the moment are:
Inquisitor Hoth w/Saul Baltasar, Titus Dio + Cyber-Mastiff, Sylus Tem, Hurk
Inquisitor Balthier w/Salem Rios, Ishmael Castor and Dariel Rourke
Inquisitor Ferox w/Interrogator Venris, Magos Parragus and "The Surgeon"
The thing is that I won't always be taking all of those characters in one scenario, it really depends on the circumstances of the battle and any injuries/deaths that take place during the campaign.
Then I've got various antagonist and NPC characters/factions that'll be taking part in the battles for Nova Castille. I'm always fiddling with different concepts and characters that may or may not be seen through to completion!
That hood's looking great, Mol. I can't wait to see her finished. I think it'll look a lot better once you get the shoulders worked out.
I've been poring through websites looking for good stuff for arco-flagellants, but nothing has really struck me so far. Maybe improving the existing sculpts is the best thing for now, huh?
Also, what did you mean by, "the heads are spare?"
Thanks for the comments, guys. Shane, I'm in the midst of reworking the shoulders. The left side of this picture is done (the right side was a little too fiddly and difficult for me at the moment) but hopefully it should give you an idea of where I'm going. If need be, I'll wait til it dries and then reshape it slightly with a knife.
As I'm stuck on the Arco-Flagellant front, I've gone for the next best thing: A Chrono-Gladiator. I've made the model, and envision it taking a place in Inquisitor Adorno's retinue.
I'd actually quite like to have a padlock at the back of the iron mask, but I'm not quite sure how to pull that off as yet...
As for the "heads are spare" comment, it's not really that important now. El_Diablo's already laid claim to the heads in the upgrade pack for a forthcoming project of his!
Hey guys, I've not been around for a little bit so I've got some stuff to share:
Today, my FW order came and I've begun to sort it out. The Cadian upgrade kit is brilliant. The Titan Tech-Priest was another matter:
There was actually a huge chunk of the base missing; not particularly pleased, but I removed it from the resin base and attached the model to a normal base:
Here you can see him along with another member of the Mechanicus:
My Tauros Venator progresses:
I've also used a torso from the Cadian upgrade kit to create an Imperial Guard Veteran who'll probably be taking a place in Inquisitor Balthier's retinue:
El Diablo sent me the high-res pictures of Inquisitor Adorno, my Xanthite:
Anyway, today my friend Nick came round, so we've made some progress with various different projects.
For a start, here's the Venator, pretty much finished (in that I've used all the Forgeworld components I'm going to use aside from the rollcage - I just need to alter the model a bit):
Nick also brought round his PIP Warrior-Priest, Ishmael Castor. Those of you who've followed the log will possibly know the twisted history of Castor - we lost the first version of this model, so we've had to recreate him. This time around we've attached a backpack from a missionary-priest to the model. I think it makes him look more 40k, and gives him the look of a pilgrim traveller with all his wordly possessions strapped to his back.
Lastly, we've converted up the models for the Enforcer patrol that'll be taking to the streets of Nova Castille. More pictures of these guys will eventually be forthcoming:
How is the casting of your Venator chassis? The piece that would go under the turret plate has holes in mine. Annoying given that it was delivered on release day, so the mold hasn't had time to degrade; but fixable.
What are you planning on doing with the Venator if you're not using the turret?
Awesome work on the new additions. I always liked that warrior priest in particular, and you have converted him well. Was that backpack one piece or did you put it together? also, where did you get it?
OKay, so here's a slight update after I got a big GW order through:
This is the WIP of Inquisitor Theseus, ardent puritan of the "burn-them-all" school of thought.
You should probably be able to place most of the pieces for this model. He's semi-blu-tacked at the moment, but with a bit of green-stuffing he should hopefully come together a bit more.
This is Pyremaster Korbin, one of his followers:
(Obviously an unconverted 40k miniature, but I've always really liked it and wanted to include him.)
This shot shows the Inquisitor and his chum together!
I've also managed to acquire this model:
I'm a big fan of it, but at the moment I'm unsure what I'm going to be doing with it.
Lastly, I've begun to do some work on a warband of Nurgle-worshipping Tech-Priests. Here's the first models as they stand:
This is a tech-priest, and I really like how he seems to be contemplating the head he's just removed. I'm not sure what to put in his other hand; possibly a plague knife like the Death Guard have?
This model should end up being a skitarii of some kind. He'll be very different, mostly due to the judicious use of green-stuff. For example, I'm dead-set on the model having a hood, so in the end you probably won't even recognise it as a Catachan one!
Wow you Inquisitor Theseus is just a fantastic conversion, very evocative. And I cant wait to see these nurgle tech-priests finished off, lots of rust in the paint job I hope!
Based on what I saw in your little signature-box-thingy, you've been on Bolter and Chainsword. Go to the modeling section of the Librarium, there is a very good article on true-scaling marines. I play 40k currently, but I'm thinking about starting to play Inq28, partly as a reason to slap together some Dark Angels and Blood Angels. I was thinking about starting with an Inquisitor and his retinue fighting a group of cultists who have been corrupted to the greater good. Do you have any advice for getting started?
By the way, if you're looking for a good fanzine about Inquisitor, go to www.darkmagenta.co.uk. It is a good website with lots of sick stuff.
TACOSSS!!
Wow, this may actually be the most comments I've ever received to a post in this thread! Has my plog finally reached critical mass?
Frodo: Thanks for the comment. I'm still growing to like Theseus; although I had the plan to use that particular body, I wasn't sure what arms or head he'd have, so I'm still not sure quite how much I like him (comments from you guys are certainly helping my opinion to form!) The Nurgle Mechanicus group will be a slow project because they won't be appearing in our campaign for quite a while, but I like to have lots of projects on the go at once.
Young_Logan: Thanks for the comment. I tend to consider myself a bit of a "cut-and-paste" modeller, though I have an eye for seeing which bits can go together well!
Illumini: Thanks for the comment - see below where all shall be revealed!
CMDante: Thanks mate. The body is from the Necromunda Redeemer; the head and sword are indeed from the Mordheim Ulli and Marquand (the big hammer guy will be seeing duty in Inquisitor Balthier's retinue) and the handflamer is from an OOP Necromunda Scummer with Hand Flamer.
I'm still keen for you to do some sculpting for me, btw!
Tacobolter MK lll: Thanks for the comment (and what an awesomely weird username!) I don't post as much on the B+C as I used to; Still, I used a combination of techniques when I made my true-scaled Deathwatch Marine. I'm not really sure as to whether I'm really going to be making any more - Inquisitor isn't really designed for Space Marines regularly running around. The game is for those rare individuals fighting in the shades of grey. The best quote on the game I ever read was by Dan Abnett:
'This wasn't about the battlefield, the front-line of mud and gas and behemoth engines. This was a glimpse behind the lines at the internal complexity of the Imperium. It offered a chance to explore what might be called the 'domestic' side of the Warhammer 40,000 universe: the daily, non-military, life - at work, at worship, at rest, at court, at slum-level. A chance to visit worlds that were not levelled by war, and see how the billions of Imperial citizens lived.
And also to find out what evils stalked them, even in the shadows of their own hive cities.'
I like the idea you've got for involving the Tau, though... I think you could have some interesting mileage out of that. What I'd say is to be careful about simply transplanting stock 40k characters over into INQ28, as you can end up with an over-abundance of game-breakingly powerful weapons (or at least game-shortening ones!)
Death Gear: Thanks for the comment! Your wishes shall be answered!
I actually got a parcel today from Wayland Games including the "Viktoria, Bounty Hunter" model which I want to use to represent Inquisitor Adorno's acolyte (and lover), Ophelia Dannica.
Thanks, I like Tacos, and I like Boltguns. put the to together and you get a tacobolter(salsa not included ).
I am aware of how powerful pulse carbines and rail guns are in a game like inquisitor, so I was intending for the idea to be a group of black ops tau accompanying an ethereal as he attempted to convert the planet's population to the greater good. And most of the grunts my Inquisitor would be fighting would be human cultists, the Fire Warriors would be the Ethereal's personal guard.
On the subject of marines, I was thinking that I would have 3 or 4 deathwatch would be in for the big missions. The mandatory three would be a Dark Angel, who would have a rivalry with a Space Wolf, and a Blood Angel. The fourth would be a Black Dragon.
As a weapon idea, the stalker pattern bolter(tutorial on B&C) would be interesting, due to the fact that It's design seems to make it interchangeable in role as a sniper and as an assault rifle.
My Inquisitor's personal warband would include two Stormtroopers(Me and my friends are all going to have powerful Inquisitors), and a techpriest, who happens to be Damien's(Damien is my Inquisitor) best friend. The tech priest would eventually get his own warband after alot of character progression.
Srry if all this might be considered thread jacking, I just wanted to get my ideas into the wild.
TACOSSS
Well, pulse carbines don't have any stats in Inquisitor (that I know of); the only Tau-esque weapon to have stats in the rulebook is the Kroot Rifle, and I've never seen any other (even unofficial) stuff for the Tau aside from the Water Caste Diplomat (who probably would be one of the key figures in any attempt to infiltrate a Human world - not an Ethereal!)
I would probably consider the "Tau" side to be Humans and a Water Caste. Try considering your setting and which forces are really going to be involved. And resist your urges to have a Deathwatch Team (especially multiple Marines!)
Still, set up your own thread and I'll gladly contribute ideas!
Automatically Appended Next Post: My friend Darren sent me a message that included the pictures of the Favela-style buildings he's already built for our next game:
I have also made some progress towards the 'Favela' inspired buildings for the next scenario. Here a few pics for them too, they still need painting.
Niiiiice. sadly however, ive lost track of the characters, do you think you could PM me whos who or something?
apart from that, you have an amazing force building up
really liking the female tech priest and chrono gladiator, they look really origonal be proud
the scenery looks like its coming together really well, but i feel theres too many windows >.> but thats jsut me, hope it gets nicely detailed, like the res tof your models
Thanks for the comment, Ghosty. I've certainly been creating a lot of models, but it still pales into insignificance beside the number of figures you'd need for the average 2000 point 40k army!
The main forces we have on Nova Castille in our campaign are:
(Keep in mind that many of these are WIPs, but they should all be the most recent shots)
I had intentions of writing up my own stats for tau weaponry, but my friend also pointed out flaws in there being an ethereal. my other greater-good loving pal begged for an ethereal to show up, so I decided that the ethereal would show up after the diplomat was messily executed, grumbling, "If you want something done right you got to do it your self." My friend is actually thinking about using that as an excuse to start a tau warband, with the ethereal being the inquisitor and his escort his retinue. I pointed out that he would only be able to use it for the rest of the campaign, but he's very stubborn.
I was actually going to use the marines as a separate force, sent on infil and sabo missions. The only one who would spend any great amount of time in Damien's retinue would be the dark angel. I am going to start my own thread, Tacos Inq28 blog 'o bloggy bloggyness . I'm still getting the hang of posting pictures though, so you all will have to settle for fluff n stuff.
I like the favela-style. What's it for, a settlement on the outskirts of Nova Castille? I can't wait to read that report. I also liked the last one, with Balthier cutting his way through the cultists to get to the seer. I also kind of enjoyed the brief sequences we followed Slim.
TACOSSS
P.S. I can imagine the favela scenario know,
[i] Balthier stepped lightly through the settlement's streets, aware that he would easily be cut down if ambushed. Suddenly he heard the revving of a chainsaw, and spun around to see a cultist rushing madly at him. Balthier drew his power sword and blocked the man's blow, drawing his plasma pistol and blowing off the man's head. He heard a grunt up on the catwalk above, and turned to see Salem "Slim" Rios backflipping over a man as another ganger lunged with his blade, all the while shooting a group of rushing scum. Balthier turned and fired his pistol at another one of his attackers. As bullets pattered around him, he became filled with the adrenaline of a trained killer.[/u]
Nice looking scenery there mate. Looking forward to seeing it get the weathering and detailing treatment.
The RT is looking good already and that new female fig fits in very well stylistically (the knee pads are almost identical to the kal jerico figures).
Happy to do some sculpting, feel free to shoot me a pm or email to discuss as I've finished the commission I had on the go when last we spoke about it.
I wasn't expecting the shack to be pink... I'm very interested to see where you go from here.
It's a very cool board. I'm sorry if you've said it already, but how many models are you going to field in one game? I'm working on a board but I'm having trouble figuring what size it should be.
Well, the streets still seem a little too open. The way I remember Favela, you were constantly jittery running through alleyways, wondering when someone would come out of one of the sidepaths and pop you in the back.
If you're playing with lots of minis, I guess it's good. It just doesn't really feel cramped enough to capture that slum feel. It still looks great though
This is some really awesome stuff Molotov! All of your INQ 28mm stuff is absurdley inspirational, putting this easily in the top five INQ logs I've seen (which, over the years, puts it up in a very high spot!). I'm particularly fond of your female techpriest, so much so that I converted my own version of one for my army. Your painting is superb as well, you're going to have to do some tutorial on one of your miniatures whenever you have a chance.
On a side note, I recognize your avatar symbol from a Space Marine army called the Castigators, would you in fact be that chapter's creator?
Phoenikuz wrote:Just wanted to say that I'm still loving all your work (it serves as a great source of inspiration); keep it up!
QFT
I just have to say WOW. this has proven very inspirational, although i don't play INQ28 or stuff like that yet...
this has proven inspirational for my WH inquisitor lord and retiune.
I thank you.
Hey guys, thanks to everybody that's commented to keep this thread afloat whilst I've been doing various other things.
@ Accolade: An accolade indeed! I was really various pleased (and flattered) to receive your comment. I am indeed the guy who created the Castigators, and you can see them here. I've not done anything with them in a while - I'm surprised anyone remembers them!
@ Phoenikuz/Agro: Thanks for the compliments, I really appreciate them.
@ Logan: Interesting question. I've never really wanted to actually realise any of the Abnett characters in model form, though the novels have proven exceptionally inspirational. The Eisenhorn trilogy ranks as my favourite Black Library series. Inquisitor Hoth is based somewhat around Eisenhorn's aesthetics, whilst Fischig inspired me to include an Abritrator in Hoth's retinue - hence Titus Dio.
Here's some various pictures; first up, a summary of what Steve and I have achieved:
Titus Dio, Arbitrator
Titus Dio and his Cyber-Mastiff
Saul Baltasar, Rogue
Sylus Tem, Sage
Inquisitor Theodor Adorno
Seraphael, The Whisperprince
"Mourn", Mercenary
Inquisitor Adorno, "Mourn" and Seraphael
Deathwatch Marine of the Sword Bearers Chapter.
I'm in the middle of trying to type up the latest battle report in our campaign, but it's slow going - here's the pictures I've taken which I'll put up and hopefully you can get some enjoyment out of them!
(L-R) Salem "Slim" Rios, Inquisitor Alaric Balthier, Ishmael Castor
The retinue of Interrogator Ra'ef Venris
Some shots on the scenery we played on (we may touch it up as we continue to use it)
This log has been neglected a little, which I guess means I have plenty to post.
Steve and I managed to work on Inquisitor Hoth:
First off, he was like this:
The ideas progressed to this...
...and ended up like this:
Finally up-to-date. I posted the conversion of Ophelia back in March. I sent her to Steve a few months ago, and he's gotten round to painting her.
For those wondering, the original miniature is Viktoria, Bounty Hunter from the 'Outcasts' Malifaux line. They've got some nice models, but they're 32mm compared to the heroic 28mm of Games Workshop. Whilst she's a little tall, I don't think it's a deal-breaker. After all, she's an ex-Battle Sister (now you know what's under that armour!)
The laspistol is a FW resin one from the Cadian Accessories, and the Chainsword is from the Space Marine Scout Sergeant, primarily because it's a little bit shorter and more compact. Dare I say ladylike?
This is just a work-in-progress, but is definitely showing the direction we're intending to go with her.
Thanks for the comments. I did realise the two laspistols looked that different?
Anyway, I have good news and bad news.
The good news is that Ophelia is just about completed:
The bad news is that she's getting scrapped. Unfortunately, the chainsword hand was a little 'injured' in the conversion -moreso than I'd realised. As a result, Steve's ordered a new Viktoria model and is going to attempt to replicate the conversion.
Oh, but I do have some good news - Doghouse has agreed to sculpt a couple of models for my INQ28 campaign, so keep your eyes peeled for those!
I contacted Doghouse with a commission to sculpt me an assassin based on the highly-successful Assassin's Creed series. Here's the fluff I sent him:
An assassin in the employ of Inquisitor Adorno: The order of assassins from which he hails has no name, but likens itself to the Imperial Aquila. Hailing from a remote community upon an arid, rocky planetoid, its operatives are seen as akin to the claws ot the eagle, dispensing swift and violent justice to the Emperor's foes. The order places great emphasis upon remaining undetected until the last possible moment so that death may come to their targets at any time. The assassins are a 'hidden blade' at the throat of the enemy. To prosper, an assassin must blend with crowds, moving swiftly and silently without detection. They must take unexpected routes to their targets and strike without mercy.
Secretive and closed to outsiders, the order has evoked suspicion over the course of its history. At one point, the Black Templars Chapter stood ready to eradicate the assassins, but highly-placed Inquisitors ordered the Space Marines to stand down, reasoning the value of such a brotherhood beholden to the Inquisition.
Since that time, the order has provided assassins to Inquisitors upon request. Adorno's radical views and diabolic practices are of little concern to the order - its masters are well aware that extreme methods must be taken to safeguard the Imperium. It is enough for them that Adorno's authority is derived from that of the Emperor Himself.
The assassin is an intense man, quiet and introspective. Typically, he wears a white cloak, the thick cowl pulled low over his face. He radiates a palpable aura of strength and fortitude. His voice is low and masked with a thick accent, his movements fluid, yet unassuming. Having undergone trials and instruction into the hidden mysteries of the order, he is introverted, devoting himself to the ritual of training, ceaselessly honing his skills. He is in thrall to the tenets of the cult, what he calls 'the creed'.
With the order likening itself to the claw of the Aquila, the assassin carries what is known as a 'talon', a bracer worn on the forearm incorporating a spring-loaded blade mounted above the wrist. A flex of the hand and the mechanism of the blade will trigger, extending it and allowing it to be used to its full, deadly potential.
So, a long overdue update. The latest model is a Xenos advisor tagging along with Inquisitor Hoth.
He is an excellent sculpt by Eolith Miniatures; An excellent sculpt, and real fun to convert (and for Steve to paint, I hear!) The Hurk model is designed to be a small model at 54mm scale, but at 27mm tall he sits well amongst the other denizens of the dark millennium.
The model is intended to represent a member of the Scythians, a relatively unknown 40k race that have received only a few scattered mentions in the fluff. We wanted him to look deliberately very 'alien', hence the blue skin. I asked Steve to take inspiration from the Poison Dart Frog, hence the spotting on his skin.
I gave some thought as to why the pommel of his dagger had a human skull on it - I came to the idea that it might be a gift from the Inqusitor he works with. As a result, I attached a brass-etch Inquisition symbol to the scabbard of his blade to show that his work is sanctioned by the Inquisitor in question. I think it's come out really well, and serves as a nice little touch that gives him a bit of character.
A quick and somewhat different post to the last update, here's an Arbites patrol team, converted by me and painted by Darren. If you're at all familiar with these models you'll know how much of a pig they can be, but I'm satisfied that I've managed to make them look somewhat distinct and different. These guys will patrol Nova Castille, and are intended to be quite threatening (hence the proliferation of Power Mauls and Suppression Shields) but not overly so. They should prove an interesting force!
I meant to say the other day but I ran out of time. This is one lovely blog and gets me itching to play a few games of inquisitor (28mm of course) . The blue alien is just great.
The arbites are nicely done too. Keep up the inspiring work and showing the 54mm guys that it can be done well in 28mm.
It's always a bit weird with my desk - some models will sit there for years and suddenly have a bunch of bits added to them. And some of them don't turn out at all how I imagined.
Here's a few interesting things I've been working on today (I've been converting a bunch of Necromunda Orlocks, but those are for later...)
This is Pyremaster Korbin... one of my favourite 40k figures, so I've not converted him. I have, however, added a brass etch =][= to the page of his book (hopefully you should be able to see it...)
A bit of a messier picture, this is Inquisitor Greer. You've seen him before, but the combination of losing certain bits and finding other bits has left him in the state he is at the moment. I can't decide on a head for him at the moment, however. I'm in the midst of trying to give him an armoured breastplate, to which I'm going to add an =][=. After that I'll be green-stuffing his arm.
Now this model is an oddity. I bought Gunnery Sergeant Harker because somewhere on the internet I saw a cool conversion of the model for a post-apocalyptic game, giving him a double-handed axe. I fully intended to rip off the conversion. However, playing with the figure today he ended up like this:
I quite like how he's looking at the moment; he needs a certain amount of work, but he looks the part for an Inquisitor's chem-nourished henchman. I imagine him being a hive ganger or ex-Guardsman (or both!). I'll keep you updated as I progress with the conversion.
I like the take on Harker, leaving him with just an autogun as opposed to some big heavy gun. In a way it kinda works for him; not all muscle men need to carry gatling guns around everywhere like Schwarzenegger (huh, seems I got the name right my first go around!). But so, keep up the cool work.
-Kaesar II
1. are those the normal deathwatch shoulder pad you're using for your TS marines?
2. what rules are you using for marines in a munda type rule setting (i have a thread over in skirmish if you care to add to the discussion on this topic)
I like the autogun on Harker looks cool . Instead of the clip though I think maybe a belt of ammo and draped over his left arm would look cool. I think the original conversion you mentioned was done by Catferret (it can be found in this thread http://easternfringe.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6904 )
The Harker conversion is really nice and simple. Since he has a normal sized gun it actually makes him actually look chem-nourished.
Good work on the other guys too (as always). Its bugging me... I cannot for the life of my place Greer's robed legs, yet I get a horrible feeling I'll kick myself when you tell me.
Kaesar: Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it. Over on the Conclave they've actually suggest I give him a name that's a thinly-veiled Schwarzenegger reference. I had considered calling him "Banner" as he's a bit of a hulk (hur hur hur...)
Azekio:
This marine:
... actually uses the terminator pad, not the normal power armoured pad. I didn't go down the full terminator armoured route (which is why he still has power-armoured arms) because to me a lot of those style TS marines often look a little bloated, and I didn't think I had the skill to pull it off. (And I was inspired by this model by Shas'el Tael.) Some people say it makes them look like a T-Rex, but I don't think that it's particularly off-putting.
In regards to your second question, I don't play "Inquisimunda". I play "INQ28" - the difference being that I actually use the Inquisitor rules-set but with the distances scaled appropriately, rather than a mishmash of Necromunda and the like. I love Necromunda, and have been involved in campaigns that have run for years at a time, but Inquisitor is a great system that often doesn't get a good enough hit. I often think that if I put "Inquisimunda" in my thread title I'd get ten times the responses instead of just having my thread slide down the forum!
When my Deathwatcher eventually hits the field of battle, I'll probably use Eoin Whelan's evolved rules from Dark Magenta issue 2.
Doom: I considered giving him a drum or a box magazine, but I think he looks cool. He did have a belt of ammo draped over his arm, but I had to cut that away (in the picture up there, the bracer is still blocky and awful, but hopefully you'll see soon that I've repaired it and got it looking a lot better.) You're very right that it was Catferret who inspired me (and whose conversion I was planning to steal) but I'm pleased how mine has accidentally ended up! I remember liking how he'd made the piece of car tire for his shoulder armour. A nice conversion.
PDH: Thanks for the compliments. I do appreciate them. Greer has been a lengthy and time-consuming conversion, but he's based on the Necromunda 'Redeemer' model.
I've fiddled with him a little more to give him a sling for his autogun:
The sling is taken from the SM Scouts sniper rifles. I tried the Catachan one, but it was too thin and flimsy. I've had to carve it out a little to go around his leg, but it looks pretty neat now and just needs a little bit of repair work. I've managed to get the bracer on his wrist looking a LOT better - after filing away the heavy bolter shells. I've added a few pouches to the back (after removing the grenades).
All in all, he's come together very organically, and I'm very pleased with him. I'm just not sure how to integrate the shoulderpad. Should I sculpt some sort of strap around his arm? If you look at the picture of the back of the model (above), you'll see that might be tricky, but I don't want the pad to just be floating around in mid-air.
ouch...when I kick myself I really should do it a little more gently
Banner looks better with the gun strap. As for the shoulder pad have you thought/is it manageable to have it grafted onto his skin? Other wise I reckon a strap round his arm. I think a strap across his left pectoral linking to the other strap would be too much.
PDH - Someone suggested a strap across the pectoral linking to the other strap, and I also thought it would be a bit too much. I think I'm going to sculpt a little bit of a strap around his arm, and that'll do. It's just a little detail that should hopefully make the miniature make a little more sense.
Now, one of my favourite Necromunda models is the scummer with two bolt pistols:
Now, I have one of these miniatures, but it's been damaged by somebody attempting in the past to remove the bolt pistols. (Which I didn't have a problem with, as I figured twin bolt pistols was perhaps a bit much in Inquisitor anyway).
So, after rooting around in my bitzbox, I managed to find a pair of matched autopistols which I could use. It took a bit of work to carve out the jacket on the left arm so that it would fit, but it looks a lot better now:
Thanks for the comments guys! Lots of people seem to be making Schwarzenegger links with that model. I didn't think Harker was meant to be an Arnie! (Though obviously Sly Marbo is a Stallone...)
I just figured that I would take advantage of the Showcase section to put up a Completed Models thread, which will also include fluff for the models that I put up. I hope you'll enjoy it!
I've got that scummer and I've attempted to paint him three times..each time its just not turned out right. Admittedly the last time I tired was about 5 years ago.
I don't think I could desecrate such a gorgeous model by cutting his hands off...he is perfect even with Bolt Pistols. Though seeing what you've done had given me hope
Well, in truth he was already desecrated - so I was left with the choice of trying to convert him, or throwing him away.
The pistols are Necromundan - they're newer-style Orlock autopistols. There were a couple of differently-styled pistols, and I deliberately wanted to have a pair that matched, so I ended up taking one from a weapons sprue, and one from an Orlock ganger. Whilst not a flawless conversion, it does at least allow an old model to see the light of day once more!
Today I've mostly been clearing my desk (gasp!) I'm attempting to sell off or trade away things I don't need, and condense my hobby/collection down to only the things that I'm going to use.
First up, here's a Dark Scribe. This character wouldn't really fit in to Adorno's retinue as I envisage it, but I see him as someone who works for a radical Inquisitor and who has hoarded all the dark knowledge he can.
The model is Malakev, from the double-set with the Redeemer. I don't like how the arms are on the original model, so I've rotated the axe arm so it is trailing as he runs, firing wildly with his pistol.
As you can see, he carries the blasphemous tome with him, afraid to let it out of his sight. I want to reinforce the idea that it's a forbidden tome (and also his affiliation with the Inquisition) so I want to sculpt a clasp holding the book closed, and to use one of these:
These padlocks, from the Cherubael model, will fit perfectly and should be a nice visual touch.
I've also been working on my female Tech-Priest, who I found again.
Clearly, this model requires some work to smooth the green-stuff on her lower robes. But today I removed her left hand, replacing it with a heresy pistol hand and a forgeworld laspistol. I am currently looking for inspiration - how to tie her definitely to the Adeptus Mechanicus? I know some of that will come in the painting, but I'm currently looking at the Techpriest Enginseer models for inspiration.
I also dug this guy out:
I see him as a Guardsman blinded in a daemonic attack - but gifted with a "warpsight", an ability to sense daemons. A useful tool for a radical Inquisitor, he could operate almost as a 'sniffer dog' for them. I'm currently waiting on some parts to finish him off.
I've been hard at work this evening using a servo-arm from Forgeworld's titan Tech Priest to try to bash together something that'll work for this Tech-priestess. I'm working on trying to give her an AdMech symbol somewhere, though her robes will likely incorporate a cog-tooth pattern when they're painted:
The Christmas holiday has seen a frenzied orgy of activity as I've returned to my models and to INQ28. I have to admit that I've found it very enjoyable.
An order from Forgeworld arrived on Christmas Eve. To begin with, my progress was negligible, and the pictures I'd taken were of such poor quality that I didn't bother putting them up. Now though, I've managed to take a few better ones, so here you go.
This first model represents Captain Le Kard, a Rogue Trader and former officer of His Majesty's Imperial Navy. Now he heads his own dynasty, and sets his own destiny.
The model is made from the Death Korps of Krieg Commissar with a head taken from the Cadian Infantry Squad Upgrade Pack. Taking inspiration from a member of the Conclave, this Captain is based around Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard. And what did you expect from a bald starship Captain?
Another Forgeworld head let me give a face to Interrogator Bastian Grimm, assigned to the retinue of Inquisitor Balthier by Lord Dire, the master of the Dalthan Ordo Hereticus and a powerful figure in the Conclave. Grimm is an enthusiastic member of the Janus Cabal, and his motives are not as pure as they might seem...
The next model might be a little difficult to make out, but I've taken the previous "Cardinal" figure, and given him the head and hand from an older Imperial Missionary figure. Holding the Ecclesairchal symbol really gives him a "The power of the Emperor COMPELS YOU!" look, which is entirely fitting. I've given him the name "Deacon Gallowglass", and he seems to be keen to burn down everything around him.
Lastly for today, I have another model that formed quite organically. He's been a total pain to photograph, though. Based on the Eversor assassin, I made an Inquisitorial operative. Not quite finished yet, but hopefully you can get the gist:
On Tuesday, we played two games of INQ28, and I did take pictures, so hopefully I can put some of those up later today, as well!
I'll just quote myself so the new update is at the top of the page:

With regards to the assassin, here are the latest pictures:
By the way, I really liked your Cyclops-inspired Inquisitor. Really nice work!
This scenario would see two sides pitted against each other. One one, we have the retinue of Inquisitor Alaric Balthier:
(l-r: Salem "Slim" Rios, Inquisitor Balthier, Ishmael Castor)
BRIEFING – INQUISITOR BALTHIER Having finally arrived at Nova Castille after a month of travel, you have sequestered a small strike force comprised of Arbitrators and PDF forces, and stand ready to destroy the White Snake Cartel utterly.
Like the centre of a web, you plan to strike at Nova Castille first before hunting down any remaining tendrils.
However, mere hours away from the execution of the strike, you receive a coded message marked with Inquisitorial ciphers requesting a clandestine rendezvous in the slums of Cantium.
Whilst on the other, we have Interrogator Ra'ef Venris, currently operating undercover on the planet of Nova Castille:
(l-r: Nasrine Arbest, Ra'ef Venris, Elias Quinn)
BRIEFING – INQUISITOR FEROX With frustration, you have learnt through your contacts within the Dalthan Conclave that in the wake of the Lady Evangeline’s death, Lord Dire has set one of his lapdogs upon the trail of the White Snake Cartel.
Inquisitor Balthier plans a series of high-profile frontal assaults designed to smash the Cartel and leave it reeling. This will surely prove disastrous for your plans – especially as Interrogator Venris has reported that he is on the cusp of securing the information you require.
With these concerns at the forefront, you have directed Venris to arrange a meeting with Balthier in the hope of convincing him to at least delay the raids.
If Balthier cannot be convinced to hold off, he must be detained. Killing another Inquisitor – even one as dense as Balthier – is a drastic course of action, one that should not be entered into unless all other avenues have been exhausted.
We set the board up, using our "favela" terrain:
And the stage was set for the confrontation!
Night had begun to fall upon the slums of Cantium city, bringing with it a fog that was more like a thick woollen blanket, smothering the narrow streets and diffusing the dim light the glow-globes could produce.
Inquisitor Baltheir turned to regard his followers. Salem Rios stood tall, the legacy of a childhood spent on a low-gravity agri-world. His hair was braided and coloured in a style popular on Dalthus Prime, his beard shaped into a goatee that seemed to dance around his lips as they twitched into a slight smile. His hands hovered over the holsters that contained his customised laspistols as he listened to Balthier’s instructions.
Beside him stood the stout warrior-priest, Ishmael Castor. Ishmael’s craggy face, marked deeply by a long, vertical scar sustained in the defence of a pilgrim ship raided by slavers, was as dour as ever. He wore crimson robes and silvered armour swathed with purity seals and trinkets gathered during his years on the pilgrim trails. In his hands he carried a bulky “warspite” auto-rifle.
"Cover my advance as I meet this stranger." Balthier said, curtly. He needed to say no more; he trusted these two individuals to do what must be done.
Balthier moved cautiously through the fog, towards the designated meeting-place. He turned abruptly as he heard the sound of a scuffed heel from close behind him. Scowling, he attempted to discern the noise, but could see nothing.
There were others moving in this fog, but he could not tell exactly where they were.
A shadow passed overhead and Balthier looked up to see the dark underbelly of an Arbites Valkyrie sweeping low over the slums. The growl of the craft’s engines was a counterpoint to the howl of the wind.
He dropped his eyes to the street ahead and stopped.
A hooded figure stood before him, regarding him steadily. Its face was hidden by the wide, shadowy cowl of it cloak. The dark fabric trailed in the wind, billowing up around its legs. Given the figure’s size and bulk, it had to be a man. There was little else that Balthier could discern.
The stranger spoke, after a moment regarding him.
"Greetings. Are you alone?"
Balthier ignored the question.
"Who are you, and why have you sent for me?" The Inquisitor did little to hide his irritation.
"That is of no concern. We know who you are, and that is enough." The mysterious figure appeared almost to smile.
"Then you know I am not renowned for my patience. I ask you again - why have you brought me here?"
"We know your mission is to bring down the White Snakes. You must halt your strikes."
Balthier drew back, drawing his plasma pistol as he did so. The coils of the deadly weapon hummed to life, casting a glow that illuminated the face of the stranger - a face that seemed implacable.
"I have travelled half-way across the sector to complete a mission any novice explicator could accomplish," Balthier hissed. "The assault on the cartel is imminent. I will not halt my work on the words of a robed figure in a backwater street who refused to tell me why - or even to give me his name!"
The figure shrugged.
"Your orders come from Lord Dire. I serve a higher authority. If you love the Emperor, you will do as I ask." He inclined his head toward the plasma pistol. "Killing me will accomplish nothing." It was not a plea; rather, it was a statement of fact.
Balthier found himself caught between outrage that the stranger should insult his faith in the Emperor and incredulity at his gall. What did he know of Lord Dire? Who did he serve, and what was his agenda here?
"And what would delaying the strikes achieve?"
* * *
Nasrine Arbest moved quickly through the fog, gripping her autopistol tightly.
Venris had ordered her to locate and silence Balthier's men. Although there had been no sign that the Inquisitor had brought followers, he was predictable enough. Somewhere in these streets, his lackeys were to be found.
She glanced back, trying to discern where Quinn had settled. The fog made it impossible to see more than a few metres, and she trusted that the marksman would be able to protect her, if it came to it.
* * *
Quinn stared down the scope of his hunting rifle, 'Audrina'. Named after his ex-wife, it was a vicious weapon - though not quite the equal of its namesake. Through the thermal sight, he could see Venris talking to Balthier. He settled his crosshairs on the Inquisitor, and waited for the signal...
* * *
The stranger inclined his head slightly.
"We have plans in place that must be seen to fruition."
Balthier shook his head, raising his plasma pistol. "I will not listen to these riddles and veiled truths. Speak plainly!"
"We are working at cross purposes. Your actions against the Cartel must be halted - one way or another. Let us end this amicably."
"I do not wish to raise arms against another servant of the Emperor." Balthier grimaced. "But if you attempt to halt my work here, then you will leave me no choice."
The stranger sighed. "Neither of us have the luxury of choice here, Inquisitor. What we do here must be done. The ends justify the means." He raised his hand and gestured.
Balthier felt the shot before he heard it.
* * *
The shot took Balthier high in the chest, knocking him off his feet and smashing him to the ground. Coolly, Quinn pulled back the lever, loaded another shot, and fired again.
He caught movement in his peripheral vision, and saw a priest of some kind in silvered armour raising an out-dated autorifle and firing it at his position. The bullets blew chunks out of the brickwork around his position. In truth, the priest was too far away to do much damage, but he was exposed. Quickly, he packed up his rifle and left for the arranged location.
* * *
Nasrine turned the corner of the building, and found herself abruptly confronted by a tall and undeniably handsome man with two laspistols held confidently in his hands. Both found themselves with guns in their faces.
"Well, this is embarassing." She said.
He smiled wryly.
And then she punched him in the face, diving backwards, doing anything she could to escape. She could hear gunfire, shattering the stillness of the night, and the Arbites would be here soon.
Disappearing behind a building, she heard lasfire hissing past her. Doubtlessly she would see this man again...
Conclusion
Balthier was shot in the chest and heavily wounded. The medicae in question should be praised for their tolerance - the Inquisitor is not exactly known for his patience! With the Inquisitor injured, the raids against the Cartel have been delayed, much to Balthier's annoyance.
Knowing that there must be more to the situation than meets the eye, Balthier has requested more intelligence on the White Snake Cartel. The Arbitrators have been able to bring the Inquisitor a transcript from a vox-thief installed in the offices of Gidaeon Kane, the head of the Cartel. It reads:
CLASSIFICATION: BLACK OMEGA
DATE: 910.m41
AUTHOR: Arbitrator Vaun
Subject: Trasncript of meeting between Gidaeon Kane and unidentified individual.
Recipient: Inquisitor Balthier
Inquisitor,
The following transcript is the result of a sound capture obtained by covert methods. The meeting detailed below took place within the offices of Gidaeon Kane, suspected to be the leader of the White Snake Cartel. The manner of both parties would indicate that this was not the first time they had met. Throughout the transcript, Kane is designated ‘K’ and the unidentified mercenary is designated as ‘M’.
[transcript begins]
M: You summoned me?
K: Yes, sit down. [Pause] I’ve been observing you for a couple of months now and I’m impressed with your work; the way you dealt with Bivander was impressive and saved me considerable loss of income. I am now prepared to let you into the inner circle, but first there is something you must do for me. You must take this data-slate to a contact in the riverside district. It must be taken personally. I cannot risk anyone else getting knowledge of this.
M: You wish me to run a simple errand?
K: Yes, but is of the utmost importance. This is why I’m trusting you with it. Take someone else with you as protection, but not a large group as that would raise suspicion. [Transcript ends]
Seizing upon this opportunity, Balthier orders a squad of Arbitrators to capture the courier and get him that data-slate. Something is going on on Nova Castille, and Balthier intends to find out what it is...
"AMBUSH"
Leaving Kane's office, Venris takes with him a Bounty Hunter by the name of Gaius Varrus, known to all as "Gunhound". They set out for the Riverside district.
Against him are Judge Theophilius Frost, a hard-bitten man who's not about to let a Cartel member disgrace him in front of an Inquisitor.
The table was laid out like so; Interrogator Venris would be starting on the left-hand side and would have to escape off the right, whilst the Arbitrators were at the right end of the board, hidden ready in ambush.
The two of them moved briskly along the street, stopping at the corner so that the Gunhound could try to spot anything untoward...
... but the coast seems clear, so the two of them begin to move down the street.
The end seems to be in sight for Venris, who must be wondering why Kane made this all sound so serious!
Suddenly, an Arbitrator bursts from cover. Judge Frost knocks the Gunhound out of action straight away with a clean hit straight to the head with his crackling shock-maul.
The Judge orders Venris to surrender - he is clearly outnumbered and outmatched. The Arbitrators begin to close in from all sides. Vaun aims at him with the shotgun, intending to shoot him if he runs.
Venris smiles. Outnumbered he may be. But outmatched? He thumbs the activation rune on his chainsword and plunges into the fray. As he trades blow after blow with the Arbitrators, he quickly has the upper hand, his ferocious technique making up for the Arbitrators' superior armour. Judge Frost quickly falls, as does Arbitrator Laceo. As he is about to deliver the killing strike, Laceo lashes out with his shock maul, bringing Venris to his knees.
Arbitrator Knox quickly steps in and delivers a savage blow to the back of the neck, rendering Venris unconscious.
Lastly for today, we have...
BREAK OUT
Ra'ef and "Gunhound" have been captured by the Arbites, and are being held in a temporary holding facility before they can be transported and interrogated.
The facility is located in the slums. The three uninjured members of Judge Frost's squad have been left to guard the facility - Laceo, Knox and Vaun.
(The jail is the building in the centre of the board.)
Little do the Arbitrators know that the White Snake Cartel is mounting an assault. Not to rescue Venris - but to get that data-slate back at all costs!
The scenario begins with the White Snakes unleashing a torrent of fire against the Arbites guarding the cell-block.
Over forty shots later, Arbitrator Knox is still standing. The suppression shield that has saved his life is pock-marked and dented, but he stands resolute!
On the other side of the board, Ra'ef's comrades arrive to rescue him. Led by Parragus, a slightly deranged serial-killing Tech-Priest, they make haste toward the cell-block. Nasrine Arbest reminds behind to guard their escape route.
Arbitrators Knox and Vaun notice none of this, because they're too occupied fending off the assault of the White Snakes. Vaun kills three of them outright with accurate shotgun shooting, whilst Knox takes one out in close combat, smashing the ganger's head open with his suppression shield.
Parragus works with machine-like efficiency, detonating a Krak Grenade against the jail cell's wall. As the dust from the explosion begins to settle he moves in quickly, hacking open the cell bars. A full-scale melee breaks out inside the cell block as Arbitrator Laceo struggles to contain his prisoners.
At that moment, Inquisitor Balthier and his retinue arrive. With Rios and Ishmael providing support, Balthier charges towards the cell block, ordering the Arbitrators to aid him.
Balthier kicks open the door to the cell block. Surveying the scene qiuckly, he sees the Bounty Hunter "Gunhound" equipping himself from the cell's equipment locker. Balthier raises his plasma pistol and fires. The pistol spits out a ball of energy that incinerates Gunhound's torso, leaving him dying on the floor. Balthier notices to his dismay that the courier is gone! As is the data-slate!
Balthier charges through the cell-block, exiting through the hole in the wall and finding himself confronted by Elias Quinn. Without so much as pausing, Balthier impales the unfortunate marksman on his power sword, leaving his broken corpse twitching on the floor. He sees the other two leaving, and orders them to stop.
Venris turns and laughs at Balthier, and in that moment the Inquisitor recognises the shadowy man who warned him off the White Snakes. With a cry of "You!", Balthier launches into combat, although the Tech-Priest manages to interject himself as Venris flees.
Only Ishmael Castor is in a position to stop Venris as he flees with the data-slate!
Unfortunately the hardy warrior-priest finds himself outmatched in combat and falls, allowing Venris to escape.
CONCLUSION
Again Balthier has met Venris, and again he has been thwarted! In a real case of "so near, yet so far, Balthier could not manage to engage the Interrogator in close combat. Not that Balthier knows Venris is an Interrogator, yet!
Still, he knows now that powerful forces are attempting to force him to leave the White Snakes alone, and few can stand against Inquisitors - aside from other Inquisitors. He has little choice now but to pursue Venris and attempt to recover the data-slate.
Venris, for his part, has had his cover blown within the White Snakes. Kane is a suspicious man, and will be wasting no time in attempting to move his assets off-world. Venris must attempt to stop Kane before he leaves Nova Castille and attempt to find out just where they are getting the mysterious drug "Haze" from.
I always like reading =I= battle reports. It'll be interesting finding out just what the white snake cartel are up to...and just what Venris is trying to achieve in the long run.
Modelling wise:
Captain Le Kard (but a very bad pun ) Very very nice idea. I like him best looking in the direction the commissar was looking in originally.
Bastian Grimm - I've been trying to work out how to use that veteran head and unfortunately I think you've got it! The hair cut works better on an Inquisitor than a guardsman. Nice. What pistol hand have you used on him?
Inquisitorial Operative - Not sure about him....I think it could be that he is armed with a crossbow (in comparison to the tech gear on the torso) and I think the assassin models are in dire need of an update. I'm interested in seeing him complete with right hand though.
Malakev - I love what you have done with him...he looks so much better.
Tech Priestess - Inspired use of that model. I may well steal it...sorry
neil101 - Play Inquisitor....its free and good fun. Modelling a few guys is also good fun.
Hey guys, apologies for the lack of response to comments here - especially when I moan that I don't get many comments on Dakka!
PDH: Thanks for the in-depth commentary. In response to your commentary, the revolver hand on Bastian Grimm comes from Heresy Miniatures. The Operative is a nice model in reality, it's just a complete and utter pain to photograph. The handbow looks good in real life, and fits into my idea of the character.
Ghosty - You can use just about anything, hence me creating my own alien race. There are rules for Kroot, they were up on the Spanish Games Workshop site. I'd like to create a Kroot Mercenary at some stage, and I do have some Kroot sprues sitting around somewhere...
* * *
So today I've been able to go home, and I've been rushing around making some progress on a bunch of conversions.
Firstly, Arbitrator Vaun. During our "Breakout" battle, my friend Nick controlled the Arbites, and Vaun managed to take down four gangers with his shotgun before falling in close combat against Interrogator Venris's forces. Nick said a number of times that he wanted Vaun to join Inquisitor Balthier's retinue.
As a result, we needed to give the model a bit of an overhaul. Vaun was going from being a somewhat generic NPC into a more fleshed-out character. Given his serious injuries in the last game, he's picked up a bionic leg (which I'm still working on.) I also added a winged skull to the butt of his shotgun as I thought it made him look a little different. And, obviously, he's decided to take his helmet off!
I still need to do some green-stuffing to his collar, his breastplate and his wrist (as well as fiddling with his bionic leg to make it a little more integrated), but I really enjoyed the challenge of making him a distinct and interesting model.
Next, Rourke the Sniper.
I've had Rourke kicking around for quite a while, and he was always meant to be part of Balthier's retinue, but I didn't really like how he performed in game. I've changed his long-las into a more traditional lasgun.
The next stage in the continuing saga of Captain LeKard - the sword is taken from the Colonel-Commissar Gaunt model.
And this is the model I'm perhaps most pleased with at the moment:
I've had this conversion in mind for a while, and I'm pleased with how it's turned out.
Now all the talk about =I=28 being great for modelling because of the massive range of models and not having to use the same basic bodies etc. I've bought the Marquand miniature to do exactly the same thing for a Rogue Trader warband. OMG. In fact the only difference is that I've got an old metal terminator chain axe head to use lol. But so far I've not got round to making it. Yours looks awesome with the FW chain axe. I love the miniature because he is wearing Rogue Trader era flak armour.
Rourke is cool. For a tech warband I've been considering using that model as a skitarii, would have to GS over the camo on the back of the cloak though. I think a few of the Vostroyan would work well for skitarii...bar the bear skins.
Vaun is one of those cool things that comes out of Inquisitor. What is it with characters taking off their head gear though? The veteran upgrade pack is really good...I just wish the shotguns were all separate from the bodies. I like the bionic leg and it looks familiar but I cannot place the part. Its also looks crude enough to be Arbite issue
As always good work. I look forward to seeing the operative completed with background to get a sense of him I'm going to check out the heresy site again but its so dangerous.... I'm going to crack sooner or later and buy their ghouls.
Harker conversion is simply awesome!! So simple, so effective. I am once more torn with my decision to use plastic only for the Legion project... hmmmm.... maybe I need to do a Harker variant for Inquisitor Haag's retinue.
Hey guys, sorry for the late response - my teacher training course has been keeping me very busy! I'm back at home for the weekend, so I managed to crack on with a few conversions:
Firstly, I started tackling Guardsman Rourke, who has been effectively changed from a Sniper to more of a Scout/Tracker/Pathfinder Figure.
Today, I looked at his Vostroyan mask. It had a bulbous breathing apparatus which looked like a censer. If anything, it looked Nurglesque. As a result, I used a Cadian rebreather to make it a little more pleasing to the eye:
I've added part of a Space Marine auspex to his lasgun to emulate the heartbeat sensors from Modern Warfare 2.
I've also added a cool knife that was floating around in my bitzbox. I think it was from an Eversor assassin, but truth be told I'm not really sure. Regardless, Rourke is done and I've given him back to Nick (so who knows how long it'll be before it's painted...)
The next battle in our campaign will feature Interrogator Venris attempting to kidnap the head of the White Snake Cartel whilst Inquisitor Balthier is trying to kill him. The battle will take place across Nova Castille's spaceport. There will be an orbital shuttle, and the shuttle requires a pilot:
The next conversion came out quite unexpectedly. He's a bit of an ODST-inspired "Drop Veteran". I want to do some work on him to make it clear that he's absolutely not a Space Marine scout, though...
In other news:
Bring me the head of a Donorian Clawed Fiend! (Or... "What pops up into my head when I look at new releases.")
(Or... "Why the hell can't I just leave a model unconverted?!")
I saw the recently advertised Dark Eldar Clawed Fiend on the GW website. On The Conclave, there was discussion that it could make a great 54mm Werewolf. I had other ideas - it would make an excellent alien when meshed with the body of an Ogryn! I did originally consider the Blood Bowl Ogres for the task, in part because of these fabulous Drop Troop Ogryn (whose owner I can't credit, so apologies for that...), but failing that, I settled on the Imperial Guard Ogryn for my "Fiendgryn" concept.
After thinking about the "Mr Woof" idea, the not-Worf for Captain LeKard's motley crew, it occured to me that an alien like this would make a brilliant member of his retinue. It has the ridged forehead, the mane of hair, and even the beginnings of a sash across his chest. The idea certainly has merit! I went into GW Leicester today to see if they had a Clawed Fiend on display so I could get a general idea for the scale of it (if it's out of scale with an Ogryn, then the conversion won't work) - but unfortunately they don't. The Fiend is due out on March 19th, so they should hopefully have a display model in the Black Box soon; as a consolation a staff member at the store was able to find me this picture, which suggests my plan may well work...
Mol - that fiendgrn is a brilliant idea, good imagination. I'd say with a bit of GS the fiends head would be fine. They both fit on the same base size so I doubt there will be much difference.
But I really don't think its going to help your new years resolution: Total Hobby Balance: -£121.15 Please don't let put you off though...I'd be gutted not seeing the fiendgrn due to a throwaway comment!
I like what you've done with the Vostroyan's face mask...though I think the round grill is my favourite part of that model. It really alters the miniatures appearance. Please file off the mold line on the dagger! I hate mold lines with a passion....I find half the time I cannot see it until I've undercoated it.
The pilot is a nice simple conversion, I'm rather fond of the laspistol and the data port connection is a clever use of a servo skull.
The drop veteran is a nice idea but at the moment he just screams space marine scout with a small head. I think you need to add something to the chest, like the pouches that come with the scouts and maybe some insignia.
PDH - Thanks for the response, mate. I think the Fiend's head will work. I keep falling in and out of love with the idea based on that mock-up... I need to get the model in my hands!
As to my resolution - I have just sold £100 of bits, which pushes me back (closer, anyway) into the black. I've got more stuff to sell on eBay, including a Realm of Battle board - and I've just seen one go on eBay for £112!
The Drop Veteran was an awkward model, just put together based around bits I had on my desk. If he doesn't work, I won't be too distraught about it.
Thanks for the comments, anyway - hopefully I should have something soon to show you!
well, one thing that could make him look a lot less Space Marine Scout is to shave down the ventilator on the back, make it a bit more humanoid back. Otherwise, nice work on keeping near even- certainly never quite my way with this hobby. I should know, considering all the funds spent on this stuff. The fiendgryn sounds a very interesting idea; I will be interested to see how it turns out if you make him.
Well, as I said, the Drop Veteran was a model I made on the off-chance, and I'm really not that fussed that he didn't make it through Quality Assurance (that's you guys!)
In the meantime, I've been working on my Star Trek-themed Rogue Trader's warband.
The parts ought to be obvious; this Tech-Priest is based on Geordi LaForge. He needs a bit of work - I need to remove the second hand on his great axe, and he'll be getting a pistol from Heresy Miniatures. I also plan to fiddle with his backpack - I don't want him to have the servo-arm that comes with the Enginseer model, as it looks unbalanced with him holding the axe one-handed. So I'm considering giving him mechadendrites instead. Obviously I'm also going to be giving him a hood, as that's one of the key signifiers of the AdMech.
Here you can see him alongside Captain Picard LeKard, the Rogue Trader. LeKard still needs some work green-stuffing his neck and repairing the collar slightly. Along with the Worf-esque "Fiendgryn"... I'm just considering a fourth member. Data wouldn't fit the 40k setting, but I'm wondering if Troi could fit as a psyker (sanctioned or otherwise...)
I really don't get the lack of response to your stuff Mol!
The Tech Priest is cool....and you're right he will need a hood, I think it might even be mandatory It is quite an awkward model the enginseer and I think you're using the only other pose it'll do. What are you planning on putting at the end of the mechadendrites? If you're stuck the Forge World Servo Skulls come with some cool mechy bits.
While I agree with you on the daemon hosts, which are ugly models but easy to convert. I disagree with you about the Arco-Flagellants. With slight tweaks to the arms the 28mm ones can look really good...I just think its gw's paint job on them that is the main problem. I feel the death cult assassins sculptor tried to copy the twins idea too much and kinda failed in bringing the new models to the fore but I do like the size of them (slight and feminine). I also think they are wearing too much armour. I've got a couple that I'll paint up one day....or steal lalabox's idea http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/347792.page .
Your new terrain is off to a great start too. The mine workings look good, god bless necromunda bulkheads*. The underground lair looks massive...what the hell came in that packaging!
Keep up the good work and please keep posting here because I'll keep commenting. A quick question on your blog do I have to have an account to leave comments?
Cheers for the comment mate. As far as I know, commenting on the blog doesn't need an account - though if you have a google account, you can log in with that.
Dakka's always been the forum I've found hardest to get feedback from. What incentives do I need to offer?!
Anyway, in the meantime, work has continued apace on our Shuttlecraft:
For what it's worth, this is a plog that I click on compulsively. My group isn't really interested in Inq so I live vicariously through your plog and your site. I don't like to comment if I have nothing to add to the thread because (in my opinion) it just dilutes the good or valuable posts.
So, yeah, it is liked and appreciated. Please keep posting.
I guess one thing I could add is why don't you do data as a servitor ;-)
Regardless, the two new people look pretty nice. I'm not sure I'm a fan of the Tech Priests head. I think it may be how blank it is, compared to the techno gubbins that is going on over the rest of the miniature. It kinda looks really tacked on, as opposed to meshing well. The Rogue Trader looks ace though, that aged head works really well.
This new fangled shuttle looks promising too, is it supposed to be a space faring ship, or a more valkyrie job?
Somnicide: Hey, I appreciate that, and am glad you enjoy the blog. Comments are always appreciated, though! Whilst I'm not after sycophancy, they're just as valuable. I did consider Data as a servitor, but... well, you'll see in a minute!
Weety: Thanks! I deliberately didn't want to do "40k Star Trek" - in many ways, Star Trek and 40k are the complete opposites of each other. Star Trek is about the nobility of humanity in a bright future - 40k is grimdark, and all those "new lives and new civilisations" get exterminated.
Ghosty: That's fair enough! As I said, I don't want to do a blind copy, which means hopefully what I produce will be 40k enough to interest you. The Tech-Priest's head did concern me once I got it on; I was afraid it was too big. Removing some of the massive chin and the communications devices made it a lot better. I've GS'd a hood (or the beginnings of one) which has also helped. At the moment, I'm considering whether he needs a respirator or re-breather. I'll show you that when I get around to it.
The shuttle is supposed to be space-capable, but it's not got a warp drive. It's just a lifter/lander to get from space into orbit. So I would suppose it follows a similar role to the Valkyrie or the Aquila.
So:
Some guys on Warseer had some ideas regarding Data - they suggested that based on his role, that a Navigator might be interesting. A Navgiator with yellow eyes and a logical outlook on life. I liked the idea - and thought that a Navigator would be an interesting challenge, very distinct from the models I've worked on before, so I've worked up a concept sheet with some of my ideas.
As you can see, I'm thinking of using this Tau Ethereal, with a headswap. He'll need a bit of other detailing, but this shows some of where I'm going at the moment.
Is he going to have a ginger cat? Or did you just throw that pic in for amusement! You are right of course star trek is 40ks polar opposite - but I think this makes the idea fun - just imagine they got sucked into an alternate universe like they are always doing
Somnicide: Yeah, that's what occurred to me. Thanks for the comment!
Weety: Heh, well the character of Data in TNG does actually have a cat called Spot; someone on Warseer suggested that I give the navigator a feline familiar. Undecided on it thus far, but it's something that I'm considering.
So, I just fond this blog and I'm a bit miffed I haven't seen it before. You've got some absolutely fabulous conversions on here - and they are mostly metal!
The shuttlecraft is looking good, and I am very anxious to see what you end up using for the navigator. I've been thinking about how to model one too. I haven't gotten any farther than your concept sheet. I am thinking of using a genestealer head (with tendrils) as a base for the head, drawing on the navigators from Dune.
Just discovered your thread. You've got loads of good stuff going on in here, everything it needs to make me subscribe (i.e. decent conversions and/or necro/I-munda).
Keep going, mate!
I'm afraid I'm a massive star trek nerd (I have never dressed up - I draw the line at cos-play) but I've always thought the cat was called spock! I'm wrong of course.
I've always felt that there wern't enough cats in warhammer so this will be fairly unique, The shuttle is looking phat, and just a little like a star trek shuttle!
TGG: Thanks for the response. I think there's a subscribe function here somewhere? I'm glad you're enjoying the blog. I do do plastic conversions where I can, but there are some models where you just have to accept that metal is the best way forward. I think ordinarily I do prefer plastic, but once you learn how to pin properly, metal can work pretty well. Ultimately, the skill lies in seeing potential in models, really. The Navigator will get there - eventually. It's yet another model in my "to-do" pile.
Baiyun: Thanks for the feedback. Though I do have to stress that I play INQ28 and not "Inquisimunda". Your miners have been rather interesting to watch, and I hope to see your continued progress.
Weety/PDH: Cheers, guys.
Here's a little bit of what's been going on this weekend. My girlfriend's been away, so my geekery could abound! And by abound, I mostly mean "surfing eBay."
So, I managed to purchase this model from a Russian sculptor:
Clearly based on the "Preacher Josef" artwork from the Inquisitor rulebook, this guy didn't fall down the Chapterhouse route. The head's perhaps the worst part of this sculpt, but I will have to think carefully what I could use as a replacement. I do like the idea of a rotund Preacher - and it helps showcase the Inquisitor battlefield as something entirely different from those of 40k.
I also won an auction for a massive bunch of Witch-Hunter retinue models. Some of them will likely go straight back onto eBay, but I managed to get two of the "Hierophant with Eviscerator" - lovely model.
I have been fiddling with a character concept:
I imagined this guy as being draped in holy icons to give him luck. How I go about it will reguire some thought, but I imagine it could look quite cool, so I'll have to give that some thought.
Lastly:
I've been trying to get an Assassin's Creed-influenced assassin for ages, and this may just be the model I need for it. With some conversion and some sculpting, this could make a great Altair-esque assassin. Hopefully this shows you my idea - still unsure what to do with the outstretched arm yet:
And lastly, for the time being, I just got a text with an (intentionally) blurry pic from Steve (he's ever the tease):
"Proof of life! Initial blocking highlights applied, now comes the pain(ting)."
Inquisimunda Ha ha I thought you were going to get medieval for a second.
Excellent update......I want that preacher model....or a link to a place I can view more of the Russians models....are you going to convert him to carry a hammer too? I think you should look at the brettonian pilgrims for a new head.
What happened to the doghouse(?) sculpted assassin?
"Harker's" skin looks good even when blurry....I love what you've done to that model.
PDH wrote:Inquisimunda Ha ha I thought you were going to get medieval for a second.
I'm on medication for that nowadays...
Oh, by the way, thanks for the Enginseer. I've not been home for a few weeks, but I'm told it's there waiting for me. Looking forward to putting it to some nefarious use when I get home.
Regarding the Preacher, I wasn't sure. I did consider it, but it will mean replacing the hand entirely - as you can see, the guard of the chainsword is moulded to the hand. Then again, pinning that chainsword's blade might be such a pain that giving him a hammer might be worth it! The Bretonnian idea came up on Warseer too, so I'll definitely have to look into them.
Thanks. Character is something key to INQ28, I think.
Here's something from me, and something from Steve:
From me, extra concepts for the Assassin:
Obviously, perspective is not my strong point - the blade on the dagger and the sword could be in front of the body if necessary - but it's just a starting point.
And the something from Steve:
Right, first (proper) wip of Harker (Mol, give him a new name, pronto!).
Skin still has a stage to go (glaze/highlights over the tattoos) and the trousers have been done. Shouldn't take long from here.
Experimented with digi cam on the trousers, using a similar technique to applying battle damage with a sponge. Doesn't create the nice square patterns we all know and love but it's enough to fool the eye into thinking it.
Blimey they have medication for everything these days.... after the day I've had I need some for chavs.
Oh, by the way, thanks for the Enginseer. I've not been home for a few weeks, but I'm told it's there waiting for me. Looking forward to putting it to some nefarious use when I get home.
No worries I'm glad its gone to a good home and look forward to seeing it again on here. BTW congrats on your ebay auction...that's a good price for a realm of battle board.
I'd avoid giving the priest a hammer in all honesty...I think it would be too much of a copy then. Besides that chainsword works for him.
Harker is looking great...I've decided I'm going to paint, him one of these days, but he is going to have a pistol, a chainsword and be black because I saw this video and Dr Dre is looking hench... like harker.
Getting very close to finishing Banner, probably be done tomorrow at some point.
With the skin tone and sheer muscle mass of him I got an idea in my head about him being linked to the Afriel Strain. or in some other way gene bred. To carry on the image of the Afriels I went with grey hair - wasn't sure at first but I think it looks cool as feck. The small piece of cloth tied to his waist I painted red to add a visual link to the Inquisition.
Only the boots, base and tattoos left to do now. Personally dreading the tattoos, but we'll see how it goes.
Progress on the miners is a sure thing to come, fear not! Once I got rid of that virus and can move without pain again, I'll push forward on them.
Inq28 is just as good as the other two for me. Played Inq54 back then and loved it. I can understand the notion to rather play in 28mm so you don't have to start all over with miniatures and scenery. I always found it especially interesting to work in the big scale though. But as long as the game is based on 40k fluff and contains some rpg elements you can consider me in love.
Looking good. I'm quite intrigued by the digital camo idea, it works and I might just have to try it out on something. The tattoo rocks my modelling/painting world (I really need a day off and possibly get out more). You should have drilled the barrel on the gun though.
Cool preacher model , , really cool infact! and good job with that harker tattoo.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Lol just noticed your cool shuttle, i was planning on trying to make a custom Arvus , so dont mind if i take notes matey!
Agreed- that tattoo looks friggin' awesome! I like the speckled pants and transition of textures- the leather boots have that bit of shine, the pants are matt, up to the dull dusty metal gear and nekkid... muscular... chest.
One of the retinues I've been focusing on has been that of Inquisitor Adorno, as they'll soon be taking to the Inquisitor battlefield. Today I received an email from Steve that he'd touched up one of my conversions. You've likely seen him before on the blog:
The model is a Chrono-Gladiator, a concept originated (as far as I know) in the Kal Jericho comics with the "Krieger" character. These characters have a kill-timer built into them that is constantly counting down. When it reaches zero, it will kill them. The only way for them to stave off death is to keep constantly killing. (So, if 40k did Crank...)
Anyway, back in the fuzzy days of the White Dwarf team's Inquisitor campaign, Gav Thorpe had a retinue led by Inquisitor Kessel. The retinue included a chrono-gladiator called Mechsimus Oilrelius:
Kessel had stopped the Gladiator's kill-timer with just a few scant months left. And so Oilrelius laboured in Kessel's service, knowing that the Inquisitor, if displeased, could restart the timer, sentencing him to death. I really liked the storyline, and thought it was very cool. And so I decided that Inquisitor Adorno would do something very similar with this individual. Adorno seems, for the most part, to see his followers simply as "tools", rather than companions.
Monday sees me returning to home, and I've got four (or so) conversions on the plate, including a Priest, a Storm Trooper, a Rogue Trader's alien, and an Arbitrator. (And maybe more, who knows?)
Well this should be an interesting week. I'll be dropping in to check on your progress.
I like the idea of
Adorno seems, for the most part, to see his followers simply as "tools", rather than companions.
and a chrono gladiator always looks so very 40k.
Are their rules for the Chrono Gladiator?
Because I find it easier to comment here than over at Inq28:
I think the Tomb Kings Sepulchral Stalkers will be too large to represent a Sslyth...unless you shorten the tail a hell of a lot. Excellent idea...shame about the price though.
40kifying the Mordheim Pit Fighters (especially the one in the middle) will look excellent. I can see that model running around with a chain sword for some reason.
Roll on the "Fiendgryn." and Interrogator Bastian Grimm. Really looking forward to seeing these guys done
The pit fighters on your blog are a nice find , i have never seen these guys before. the idea of a chrono gladiator is very cool , and very grimdark. , your blog is nice molotov , i enjoyed reading through about =I= 28.
PDH - There were Inquisitor rules for the Chrono-Gladiators. I can post them up for you if you'd like? Irregardless, this particular guy is going to have his kill-timer deactivated (or, rather, suspended) by Adorno, so he's not really going to have any Chrono-Gladiator rules.
Neil - thanks for the comments. I appreciate them!
Well, I arrived home earlier than I expected, so I set to work.
Shot of the desk:
I started by decapitating a bunch of figures:
Work has started on the "Fiendgryn" - here's some pics to show you.
This pic shows Kurn alongside his master, Captain LeKard. The head's not sitting perfectly at an appropriate angle, so I've still got some filing and repositioning to do. I intend to give Kurn a Worf-esque mane of hair, which should help conceal some of the awkwardness regarding the Ogryn's neck.
Before I fit the arms and head properly, I'm giving Kurn a sash (or, more precisely, a baldric) so as to fit closer to my inspiration. This is the first image of it - whilst it looks rough, I'll be neatening it up and adding detail with the subsequent layers. At the moment, I'm considering making it into a sort of chainmail affair.
The next model I've been working on has been Trooper Anton Drexler, part of Inquisitor Greer's retinue - a bunch of upright, pious individuals. I imagined this trooper might hail from Macharia (or a similar world) and would be adorned with many trinkets and holy icons. I'm not sure at the moment, but I might add some sort of parchment on one of his shoulderpads. This is, of course, partially an attempt to differentiate him from 40k Storm Troopers.
Having sawn off the helmet, I had to add a neck from the plastic Cadian troopers.
This allowed me to add the beret head from the Catachan Command Squad.
Whilst waiting for other models to come together, I managed to put together this techno-barbarian (though I have no real use for him at all... might well donate him to someone else...)
Lol... if only my day at work could start.. or end, with the rolling of heads..
But in all seriousness (of playing with little metal/plastic/resin figurines) I like the head-swaps. The beret-wearing trooper is awesome, but something about that techno barbarian... good stuff!
What model range is he from?? It's a simple but great conversion!
Nice stuff indeed...you've had a massively productive first day imo.
The Storm Trooper need something to make him stand out. The head is a good start but I think you're right lots of charms and parchment will help it along.
The techno barbarian really has something about him What model range is he from? I want to say Goliath but I'd be wrong.
Saving my fav till last....The fiendgryn is looking just like your photoshopped version....minus paint, smooth gs and final detail Seriously though I think that is going to be a seriously stunning miniature when you've finished.
Hey guys, thanks for the comments. The Techno-Barbarian is a model from Eolith miniatures, by Steve Buddle. Eolith closed down last month, so I guess that makes this model a bit of a rarity! PDH - you're perhaps getting "Goliath" because the spiked club he's wielding is actually from the newer Goliath boxed set!
Here's a few pics from today:
Most of the models I've worked on overnight.
My Star Trek-inspired Rogue Trader crew as they stand. Here you can see (l-r) Magos Jorgan Vorg; Kurn, the Oathbound Warrior of the Ressikan Empire; Captain Jean-Patrique LeKard and Navigator Noonien Celestino.
Here you can see Arbitrator Vaun, pretty much done. The head has been replaced, and he's been given a bionic foot.
A cherub, I like the model and he'll be joining Inquisitor Adorno as a familiar. I'm currently toying with replacing the head with that of a servo-skull. I've seen it done before, and it looks delightfully creepy.
The Russian not-Josef model. A really crisp and detailed sculpt. I've pinned the chainsword into its hilt, and have glued him to the base.
Nice group shot Molotov, i like the navigator model a lot , infact i just used this head myself on some my rogue trader crew, for the medical officer. Actually truth be told i like all of it , lots of guilotine goodness ;-)
Another fine edition....I love how hazard stripes are jumping out all over the place at the moment.
Cherub...cut his face off. Anything that is delightfully creepy always works in 40k. I've got the other cherub holding a bolter, for a Witch Hunter I'm planning, on making at some point, I'll be replacing the bolter with a chainsword.
Arbitrator Vaun - I much prefer this rendition. The previous one made him look like an arbite with bionic foot, this one makes him look like someone recruited by an inquisitor. The bionic foot is now quite subtle unlike the previous crude "arbite issue" one...I guess having the attention of the Inquisition can be a good thing after all.
The Navigator - Good choice of head. I find that head to look rather odd but that works in your models favour.
The Not Joesef - does the Russian sculptor have a website or any other cool models?
In what will probably be my last proper update for the Easter holidays, here's some progress on our female Arbitrator concept. She's going to be going into the retinue of Inquisitor Ferox.
We've been looking for a long time for the female Necromunda Bounty Hunter:
We've seen a couple go on eBay, but usually for a bit more than we were willing to spend.
That is, until I caught sight of this eBay auction:
In the background you can just about see her!
So, having won the auction, I set about stripping her. We didn't like her pose, with the raised pistol, so I had to convert her somewhat.
You can see here that I've given her another bolt pistol. Well, the pistol that fit her best was one from the newer-looking Van Saars. It looks just different enough from a bolt pistol for it to conceivably be a heavy stub pistol or the like.
All in all, whilst a relatively simplistic conversion, it should do its job admirably!
hey molotov those head swaps look class, ive always been a bit worried about trying that but i think it looks worth the effort in paticular your captain and the kasrkin catachan head swap.keep it up mate.
PDH wrote:Dude, she is one ugly model....bow footed and a face like Marilyn Manson.
I approve of the arm change and you seem to have dressed her too.
Lucky find on the ebay. Are you going to strip the paint of Inquisitor Lok? Also what is the model to the right of her?
Peter
Well, that's true. She's not beauty pageant material, but then again, in her line of work it's not a desirable trait, unless she'd be working in the local equivalent of Narcotics or Vice.
Well, I might be treading too close to heresy right now, but Keira Knightley is only ambiguously hot for me. Too flat, if you know what I mean. Plus, a hot bounty hunter girl might find herself not only shot at... although I admit, most hot girls plying that trade in fiction tend to know how to deal with unwanted suitors.
I'll never complain about being derailed by Keira Knightley (just don't tell SWMBO!)
The conversion for the female bounty hunter wasn't one of my best - on Ammobunker and Warseer there have been comments that the shoulder looks awkward. And to a degree it does, but I've already given the model to the player who's going to be using her and painting her up. I have to say that I quite like her, but will admit she's not the nicest of figures. Just shows the extremes GW forces us - I wish they'd make some more female figures!
Mmmm don't love that latest one. The words "Awkward" and "ugly" are definately apropo here. The kasrkin is more to my liking, always liked the models and just bought a set myself, there'll be headswaps in my future, might pinch that for one of them.
Got "old thread" warning for posting here, I'll assume additional comments won't irritate OP due to continuing nature of the project.
Well, she's not the most beautiful figure, but she'll work for what we'd intended.
Given that you bumped the thread, I might as well comment further!
So, I've been unwittingly roped into playing a game of INQ28 at Warhammer World on Saturday, June 11th against a member of the Ammobunker going by the name of Tychonaut. It's in aid of the annual Ammobunker AmmoBash.
The board features a downed Necrontyr vessel, but I'm conveniently ignoring it. Our game is likely to take place on the 4' x 2' section in the lower left of that picture, which incorporates a base camp and a mine-workings/archaeological dig, which I think is a great place for two Inquisitors to clash:
The game, which has been titled "Nine-Tenths of the Lore" will feature Inquisitor Adorno going up against a radical of the Ordo Xenos as they battle for control of the dig site.
In aid of it, I've put up an INQ28 Reference Sheet, which has the distances in inches rather than yards. It's something I've been planning for a while to speed our games up, so whilst we're playtesting Adorno, we'll also be playtesting the reference sheet!
Inured:Having had the merest glimpse of the worst that the Immaterium can offer, Adorno treats Terrifying individuals as fearsome, and fearsome creatures have no effect. Due to a combination of prior experience and foolhardiness, Adorno gains the Force of Will skill against Daemonic entities. Sorcerer:Sorcery uses the same mechanics as psychic powers detailed in the Inquisitor rulebook, although it uses sagacity rather than willpower. However, sorcery is a fragmented and contradictory art; the increased complexity that sorcerers face compared to psykers means that the difficulty rating of a psychic power is increased by a quarter (so a difficulty 20 power would be difficulty 25, for example) In order to cast a spell, a sorcerer must be able to speak and gesture freely in order to cast a spell, typically requiring a hand free to do so. Casting a spell is considered to be a speech (or shouting) action that can be heard as normal. Devoted: Treat as True Grit.
Seraphael The Whisperprince, Master of Lies WS 53 | BS 51 | S 52 | T 51 | I 52 | Wp 92 | Sg 160 | Nv 95 | Ld 27
KBK: 5 | BIV: 5 | SS: 10 | CNC: 26 | Spd: 4
Weaponry: None. Seraphael's close combat attacks have the daemonic properties Daemonbane, Gnawing and Mind-stealer.
Armour: None.
Equipment: None.
Abilities: Daemonic (Void-Chill), Possessed.
Psychic Powers: Regenerate, Chill of the Grave, Bloodfreeze.
Chill of the Grave: The psyker reaches into the mind of the victim, using his mental powers to entrance the enemy. This power is a ranged and persistent ability which can be used on one enemy character within line of sight of the psyker. Whilst the power is in effect, the targeted character may do nothing at all and counts as being stunned (he does not fall prone). He may attempt to break free of the Daemon’s control at the start of every subsequent turn and will succeed if he can pass a Willpower test.
Bloodfreeze: Seraphael may use this power on any model within 18 yards that he is already aware of. This is a ranged power, but it does not require line of sight. If the psychic test is successful, the victim takes an Initiative test modified by the amount the psyker passed his psychic test by. If this is failed, the character is hit in D6 random locations exactly as if they had been hit by a webber. The effects stay in place exactly as with a webber, including the D6 damage every turn. As this is not a persistent power, further psychic tests are not required. Characters can attempt to free themselves, though web solvent has no effect.
Weaponry: Pump-Action Combat Shotgun (with Scatter), Gorgon Pistol (Stubber with Semi (3)) Knife
Armour: Legs (4), Groin, Arms, Chest (5), Abdomen (3), Head (0)
Equipment: Re-Breather
Abilities: Hip-Shooting, Fieldcraft, Venerate the Ancestor-Spirits
Fieldcraft: Hailing from a feral world, Mourn knows how to blend into his environment almost seamlessly, thanks to skills borne from a lifetime hunting. When Mourn is in areas of forest, jungle or thick vegetation, any character checking to see if they can see him by sight alone must do so at -30% to their Awareness test in addition to other modifiers, unless they are using specialist equipment such as infra-red, bioscanners and the like. Anybody shooting at Mourn whilst he is hiding will be subject to a -20% modifier to their BS due to the concealing effects of his camouflage. Mourn cannot use these bonuses if he moved at faster than a walk in his previous turn.
Venerate the Ancestor-Spirits: If Mourn takes an opponent out of action in close combat, he will attempt to spend all his remaining actions that turn taking a trophy so that his ancestors may be sated - treat these actions as unarmed attacks.
Weaponry: Autorifle
Armour: Legs, Groin, Abdomen, Chest, Head (0), L. Arm (4), R. Arm (3)
Equipment: Abilities: Suppressive Fire, Shoulder Charge
Shoulder Charge: If Banner charges an enemy, he may choose to shoulder charge, rather than attacking normally. If the enemy character can pass an initiative test they may dodge aside up to 3 yards, and Banner can continue his remaining actions. If they fail, they are knocked back to the left or right (Banner's player's choice) - see the rules for knockback on p.180 of the LRB. Use Banner's strength value divided by 10 as the amount of damage inflicted. Banner is free to continue with his remaining actions.
Suppressive Fire: Banner lays down a burst of fire intended to suppress the enemy rather than injure them. This can be performed as a combined action. Banner can only use this if firing Semi- or Full-Auto. Choose a group of targets as normal and roll to hit as normal. For every hit the target must take a Pinning test, but no damage is done. Any 'placed shots' mean the test is taken at half NV.
Well traditionally they have random letters & numbers in the name somewhere, that's what I like to think anyway. Mine is called Gorse, not decided on the number yet. Yours seems like an Icarus to me. Or maybe take some inspiration from mythology and go with some unfortunate blind character, or maybe someone from here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_in_the_Iron_Mask
Well I'm glad you got one reply! I've just got in with a somewhat (understatement) drunk birthday girl girlfriend, who is out for the count, and I'm still wide awake..... I tried to comment on your blog the other day about your updates and to thank people for their nice comments about Spur. Shame the bloody thing kept on trying to make me sign up for my own blog. Anyway...
Oh "the wo is me" about being roped in to playing won't wash....I know you love it ! You are also being spoilt with the board it looks great....I'd be tempted to play four by four to get the mountain and dig site into the game too. I hope you take some notes and pictures for a battle report (I also hope your opponents models will be painted?).
Nice selection of models (I know I've seen them before but its good to see them again). Its also nice to see the stats and rules you've given them.
As for your chrono gladiator's name... its hard since we've got nothing to work from other than him being a chrono gladiator. Where did Adorno pick him up? Eg was he on a scrap pile waiting to be put against the latest big hitter? Was he the latest big hitter but felt going with the inquisitor was a better life? Was he picked up from the depth of some blood cults hunting pits? Is he from a hive world, forge world, feral world etc? As you can see the list is endless but I decided to have a look at some boxers, specifically John "The Quietman" Ruiz for inspiration and have come up with this:
Ruiz "The Mute".
Before Ruiz joined Adorno's retinue he was slaved to the dungeon pits of Geldarath Prime. He had been working the pits for some time, a slave to the noble house Vreal. Over the few years of his career he had become one of the big names on the gladiatorial circuit. He was known to be extremely efficient but had a flare for the dramatic towards to end of his short bouts. He picked up his stage name after his masters took his tongue. House Vreal claimed it punishment for the misdeed of blaspheming the Emperor, in reality it was far more disturbing.
House Vreal were a coven of Slaanesh worshippers, who would partake in blood orgies. It was here that Ruiz was bound to a floating alter and innocent hive dwellers were eviscerated, upon his chain blades. The remains would then rain down on the unholy congregation below. The cult took great delight in tormenting Ruiz for innocently taking part in their vile rituals; they removed his tongue so he had no way of communicating their debasement to others. His head was bound within an adamantine mask, incorporating a psy blocker, for the same reason.
Adorno accidentally found the cult, whilst investigating the where abouts of a dais to the dark gods. Adorno attacked the cult as they prepared to summon something from the depths. The alter that Ruiz was strapped to was damaged, by a stray shot, and plummeted into the mass of naked cultists, crushing many. More importantly Ruiz was set free, with his bonds broken Ruiz was an unstoppable force butchering those who corrupted him.
Afterwards Adorno hunted the crazed gladiator through the streets of the upper hive, finally catching up with the blood soaked creature as he collapsed in an exhausted heap, about to be destroyed by the local enforcers. Andorno took Ruiz back to his residents for interrogation, not knowing the gladiator was coerced into the rituals. On discovering his prisoner was mute the Inquisitor had a crude mechanical voice box fitted so he could glean information from Ruiz. This proved all but impossible as all the gladiator had left was an unshakable faith in the Emperor, a need to redeem his unknown sins and a wrecked psyche. With the mask irremovable and psychic probing complicated Adorno decided to put Ruiz to work under his watchful eye. For the Inquisitor felt the gladiator may still reveal his secrets. Adorno has set recording equipment up in Ruiz's cell for he discovered that occasionally the gladiator talks in his troubled sleep.
I didn't mean to write all that it just kinda came out...hmmm I might do the first draft of my own characters after an evening out next time..maybe I could just drink at home?
PDH: Hah, last night I took my girlfriend's brother out for his birthday, caught your reply but didn't get the chance to respond. I'm sorry you're having so much trouble commenting on the blog - if you have a gmail account it's easy, but I think you can still comment elsewise. Of course, a blog to collate your material would be no bad thing!
It should be good to play INQ28, especially in Warhammer World. I've played a couple of games there - their scenery is really nice, which is the main attraction for me. Of course it's also good to meet up with people from the Ammobunker.
The game will be made into a battle report, which'll get posted up on the blog. I'll be making copious notes throughout, because the game will also be playtesting Adorno's retinue and the INQ28 Reference PDF.
Your fluff for "Ruiz" is cool - I decided before that, along the "Mechsimus" concept, Adorno would have disabled his kill-timer, leaving him with a month or so left to live. If Adorno wished, he could reactivate it and, effectively, condemn him to death. I'll definitely give it some thought.
Thanks for all your responses!
Baiyuan: Thank you; your work is equally as characterful! Your responses are appreciated.
I've got gmail but Blogspot was insisting I join it last time...perhaps I missed the work around, I was tired at the time. I don't fancy another blog I've got my Dakka and a little bit on the side over on the Eastern Fringes (they like Nercomunda over there and I thought they might like the finished scavvies).
Excellent. I look forward to reading the battle report BTW What is the difference between an Inquisitor reference sheet and a Inq28 reference sheet?
I'm glad you've gone down the Mechsimus route because I've become quite attached to Ruiz. I'll adapt his background for my chrono gladiator (who doesn't have a iron mask) who might actually become a member of my planned Excommunicate Traitoris Inquisitor's warband* rather than an aid to Tech Priest Spur.
* finecast has opened up an interesting possibility for using that big hunk of metal warhammer khorne lord (as an inquisitor). I've not used finecast yet but I'm looking forward to it...with a little trepidation. But first I'll have to finish my monodominant. Oh and my Skitarri before that...who I'm going to undercoat now.
the INQ28 reference sheet is designed to make it easy to play INQ28. As a simple example, if you're playing with yards, you have to remember to halve everything. You can run 6 yards, which then you have to halve to make 3". That's why I've done the reference sheet in inches, so I don't have to constantly add an unnecessary step into playing the game. Hopefully, it'll speed things up.
As I said, it's not foolproof yet, so I'll be using the test game to explore the sheet, hopefully being able to identify any weaknesses.
I look forward to seeing your "Ruiz" (and his fully functioning kill-timer!) at some later stage. I've seen the Khorne Exalted Champion before, nice model but would need some work to be made into an Inquisitor.
Are we talking about this one? If so it's the thing about the great minds again, I considered that model when looking for the base model for my Inquisitor too.
Mol - I see now, that actually makes a hell of a lot of sense. Please email me your reference sheet when you get a min
As for Ruiz you'll have to wait for a bit I'm afraid. Too many projects not enough day light. Oh did you ever manage to dig out that double barrelled shotgun?
Mol, Baiyuan - That is indeed the model I want to use. Oh a hell of a lot of work... but I imagine all those resin khorne symbols coming off with a modelling knife and it makes me smile.
Molotov wrote:In aid of it, I've put up an INQ28 Reference Sheet, which has the distances in inches rather than yards. It's something I've been planning for a while to speed our games up, so whilst we're playtesting Adorno, we'll also be playtesting the reference sheet!
And yes, I have the shotgun for you... I just won't be in the same city as it until August. I'll trade your "reading fail" for my "logistical nightmare."
On the face of it that would seems like a fair exchange. But I'm blaming what you call "reading fail" firmly on Opera Version 11.11. It really has been a nightmare since I updated to it.
Thanks mate...roll on August (will give me time to try and complete a few other things before I get very much distracted by that shotgun).
Edit - I've now looked at the ref sheet. Good idea. Does the Psychic power modifier "Range to Target" need turning into -1 per 1/2"?
Just read this whole blog tonight, and I've got to say I'm impressed. I'm right now writing up an inqusition list for the new GK codex, so I can get to modelling my own inquisitors and retinues.
Thanks for the inspiration!
So, this Saturday I went to Warhammer World to play a game of INQ28 against Tychnaut, from the Ammobunker.
The game featured Inquisitor Adorno fighting against Inquisitor Atraxis of the Ordo Xenos over the posession of an archaeological dig-site. The board was created by the Ammobunker team and was very cool.
Here's the game in progress:
It went very well, but I think people were a bit confused by the sight of eight models on a six-by-four board! Still, Tycho and I had a whale of a time, and there was lots of drama.
I've also managed to get my models off Steve, so here's a few pics of some of them:
In other news, please check out my latest blog entry for some exciting news regarding Dan Abnett!
Thanks! After I return from Florida they should see their outing on Nova Castille... we've got to just tie things up with the current stage of the campaign, and then we can move on to the battle between Inquisitors Hoth and Adorno... and the unspeakable horror bound into the very heart of the planet!
Playing at Warhammer World was great fun, and there were many high points in the game. I'm definitely looking forward to the next stage!
I've also started laying the groundwork for an INQ28 invitational tournament to be played in 2012. PDH - Keep an ear out for your invitation!
That is great news about an exclusive interview with Abnett. Tell him to write a sequel to Hammers of Ulric.
Looks like you had a fun game, that board is brilliant. Nice to know its last game was something special. Any chance of a link to Tychnaut's modelling thread so I can see his models up close (that is if he has one).
So a quick trip to Florida (if you're going for rides Bush Gardens and Universal Studios theme parks were great) and then a battle report. Happy days.
I'm also looking forward to you having some free time to get your fiendgrn built.
Check out my Nerco blog for talk of the inquisition (and not in an inquisimunda way).
