ROME TW? Yea it's PC. It's an old game but it's one of the best Total War games out there IMHO Only annoying thing is trying to keep your more distant cities from revolting. I always end up having to purge them down to minimum population every few years or they start rioting regularily, even with a governor. It can be a real pain in the arse. EDIT: Found camera. Pictures taken. Distracted by SPORE though, so never got to uploading. Will do so tonight.

I just kill em' all and loot their homes. It's much more thorough Anyway, updates: I finally finished all my Tactical squads for the company. 60 Marines ready to go: I also fired off 3 Techmarines: This one I've had since my Black Templar days. He got a nice long bath in Simple Green, and a full on brushing that would make a Dentist proud: I don't even remember where this guy came from, but he was salvaged the same way as the above. I loved his helmet style, so I had to include him: This one is just made from Tank gunner bits with a backpack on him. Simple, yet effective: This Apothecary also got a good bath and scrubbing. No wash yet, but I'll be giving him Shadow Grey when I have nothing else on the go. You might recognise him from the old Command Squad box: --TERRAIN-- I just slapped these together quickly. Two pieces of packing foam from a box of juice bottles, some plasticard, and a chopped up popsicle stick for the awnings over the doors: Honoured Imperium - the ruined wall section was painted grey and gold, then given a light dusting of both Codex Grey and Skull White to simulate concrete dust. I think it turned out well: My Space Marine statue. Forgive the bad lighting on the front - I was just in a rush to snap a shot so I skipped the lamp on all these pics: And the broken Aquilia. It's kind of hard to see, but the Bleached Bone was heavily washed in Devlan Mud to produce a sort of marble effect that turned out a lot better than this picture indicates: And there you go! Updates for now. Still got plenty of marines on the To-Do list, but it's getting smaller and smaller.

Good and simple color scheme for those space marines, and it seems remarkably similar to your guardsmen.

Yea, I'm constantly changing my fluff for them (And I'll likely continue until I finish the whole Chapter years down the road ) but the one thing that remained solid was the fluff behind the matching colours. The Chapter suffered severe losses in it's early years after the third founding when a Chaos force descended upon the system through mysterious cairn stone sites on each world. They managed to save two of the system's planets before Chaos could corrupt them, but the capital world wasn't so lucky. Sorcerers from the invading Chaos forces cast a spell through a ritual thatcaused the ground to turn to barren stone. Hostile, unshielded organic life was turned to ash, and many of the Imperial Guard and PDF regiments fighting on the surface were wiped out. The Chapter's forces managed to make planetfall and disrupt (And kill) the sorcerers before the spell fully consumed the continent. They didn't regard it as a success however. The huge loss of life due to the spell, as well as the Chapter's late arrival on the capital is seen by many within it as a stain on their banner. They adopted the capital world's traditional funeral shades as their Chapter colours to remind them of those events every time they don their armour. The Guard, on the other hand, revere the Chapter and praise it for what they consider a success. As far as the planet's inhabitants care, Chaos was defeated and the world did, for the most part, survive. The ecosystem has slowly been recovering near the coastlines, and those cities lost or destroyed have since been reclaimed or rebuilt and are fully inhabited once more. This difference of views has caused quite a bit of friction between the Guard and the Chapter, whose new Fortress Monastery now orbits the Capital world on one of it's moons. The Chapter feels the Guard mock their inability to prevent the devastation that befell the capital world, despite insistance otherwise from the system's military officers. So that's basically where the capital regiments got their uniform from. Rose_Mountainz wrote:I think the middle techmarine are originaly from the blood angels honor guard box, could I be right? That could be - I did have a tiny BA force back in like... '01 or '02

I'm liking the fluff, besides the undogmatic approach to not just preforming a quick exterminatus and killing all the guardsmen who may have been 'tainted'. Oh yeah, I'm also liking the dedication to building up this chapter from scratch physically. I know I have yet to finished so much as half a company, yet I've been at it for years upon years

The reason they didn't perform Exterminatus on the planet is that there's a Forge City just south of the Capital (No I'm not pulling that out of my arse - It's on the terribad MS Paint map that I made for recreating the campaign) that produces a huge amount of vehicles for the Segmentum's forces, as well as a Naval Fleet Academy in low orbit around the world. Not wanting to lose both of those very important assets, which would've crippled a large chunk of the military forces on the Pacificus border, the order was given to save the world if possible.

COuld you provide a quick tutorial on how you did the disembarked crew?
14573
Post by: metallifan
Yea, like I said in your thread, when I get unpacked. For the commander, I just used the bits off of the Russ Accessories sprue, a Laspistol, and half a Power Sword blade mounted on a chainsword arm with the shoulderpad filed off. For any crew with weapons, it's a matter of just shaving down and sanding the shoulderpads off. The one guy with the laspistol and the scar uses the Command Sprue head with the scar on it and the harness, shoulder, and beret are just GS. The Welder is just a cut-down flame thrower. It doesn't substitute for pictures, but at least you get a general idea of how I made these guys.

Not really a P&M Update, buuuuuut... I went down to the FLGS after work today to pick up some Codex Grey, as mine is nearly out (Okay, so... kinda a P&M thing. A bit. ...Not really... Anyway...) so I grabbed that and then wandered through the isles a bit to the back of the store... Where I found... THE HORUS HERESY BOARDGAME! *SQUEE!* It was only $109.00, so naturally I was on it like white on rice. Overjoyed, I skipped back to my car with rainbows trailing behind me, flowers blossoming, and dainty, happy-go-lucky music playing in the background. Well... Okay, it didn't quite go like that, but suffice to say I was very pleased with myself. And not in the bad-touch way. Practically shredding the plastic with my bare hands when I got home, I opened the box, rapidly unpacked the contents, and was greeted by the following: And of course... A shot of the EMPRAH'S house Did I mention that it comes with an -extremely- in-depth, behind-the-scenes, never-before-uncovered look at the evens of the Horus Heresy? It even details (In gruesome coverage) exactly what sort of injuries Horus gave the Emperor, it tells us his dying words, why Horus lowered the shields of the Vengeful Spirit, etc... So yea. That's what I did. Now then, I did paint a dread and a russ as I've been saying, but whether or not I get pictures of them will be determined by how capable I am with a camera after all the beer I plan on drinking tonight Cheers!

What size brush did you use for the commisar
14573
Post by: metallifan
You mean what sizes
No one should ever be using 1 brush size to paint a mini. I use standard for applying basic colours, fine detail for small things, and small fine detail for bits like eyes, scars, and other tiny details on the mini.
I use a standard drybrush or a standard brush for applying washes, and I use a standard drybrush for applying things like weathering/dusting to my units. As I'm going for tabletop/just above tabletop quality work, this combo suits my needs perfectly

I was flipping through the rulebook in bed last night and it actually seems very simple. From what I gathered, you have a certain amount of Iniative that you can use to execute actions/movements (Kind of like the movement/combat system in the old PC game Chaos Gate if you remember that gem of badassery) but instead of Dice, you use cards that dictate what action you're taking, and the effects of that action are written on the card. In other words, it's sort of RISK tied in with Magic or somesuch (I donno if that was a good example - I know very little of MTG )

For your own health, best wear one of these if you visit during hockey season or the playoffs: And Henrik. Daniel is in there too, but he wouldn't come out of the castle/house thing.

We have a Gov't Liquor store here that has two whole wall-fridges devoted to imports. There's something like 250 different imported brands. I'm slowly making my way across the shelf. The MGD, Kokannee, and Bud Light bottles are just fillers. Some bottles that deserve a spot are...
A) A grape beer from the Netherlands. Too sweet for the beer drinker in me, but I could totally get black-out drunk on the stuff without puking.
B) The 40-sized jugs of beer from Quebec. Nasty swill, but you get 8 beers worth in one jug for about half the price.
C) Kamloops Draft. It's not too bad, and I'm all for supporting local economy. It's getting an int'l name too - you can find it in some northern areas of Washington State
D) The entire selection of German Beers. Because over half of them are stronger than 10%. The weakest brand we could find was 9.5%
E) And of course, U-Brew. Best $100 you'll ever spend. Beer that tastes like Corn-Chips and tends to be stronger than most mainstream brands? Epic Win.

Interesting fact about the ACU and MARPAT Patterns actually... Contrary to popular belief, it turns out that they're both recoloured and rearranged versions of CADPAT. They aren't actually unique patterns. You can tell by looking at the camo patterns - In the same way that the US BDU of the 80's and 90's had a recurring pattern, MARPAT and the ACU both feature some very distinct pattern sections found on CADPAT. I found that pretty interesting.
24105
Post by: Corvus
lol except the ABU is totally different from the ACU. Similar color scheme, but whereas the ACU is lolrandom pixels, the ABU (Airman Battle Uniform) is "digital tigerstripe" basically a digitized sand-green version of the old Nam era camo uniform.
*sigh* when I think about just how close the Air Force came to having Multicam as our duty uniform...
14573
Post by: metallifan
You Yanks have too many uniforms. LFN waiting to happen if you ask me. Army and Airforce both use CADPAT here. The Navy gets shunned, but that's okay. Everyone ignores the Navy Is the ABU the same stripe as MARPAT? Because if so... And what handheld magical death factory are you carrying in THIS picture? It's hard to tell. I see a wooden stock... I'm guessing AK, if that's a strap blocking the rest of it? Damn you. /Jealousy.

ABU and MARPAT are two different patterns. Navy has MARPAT, only theirs is inexplicably blue.

John: No. Fething. Way. I wouldn't repaint all that stuff if it meant cutting my dude-bits off. I do plan on doing a small Canadian-themed force though, including using my Elysians as counts-as veterans. And I'll be playing a Canadian force in the skirmish game we're putting together, so once my modern infantry arrive from Squadron.com I'll be doing them up and putting up some pics. Kanluwen already has his order of x2 KSK, which makes me quite jealous

I've just viewed this thread and I love the yellow skin honestly. I used to be big into legos, so classics like that'll stick forever.

It's not yellow. I've said that dozens of times. It just looks yellow because I'm not using a natural lamp.
Still, lego rules. Anyone that didn't have legos as a kid can hardly be considered human. Or manly.

I linked here from your posts in the Warhammer MMO thread. I think you're painting really well for an Apoc Guard army!

Well, seeing how I got first page a few days back, I may as well update this with what I've been doing as of late. With the price of 40K increasing faster than GW can justify, I went digging for alternatives. I hate the losers that play FoW at the FLGS, because they won't allow themselves to lose if it isn't historically accurate. Plus, I wanted to play with modern equipment. Enter CWC. Started this a few months back, and I've played a few games. Still getting the grasp of it, but it's far faster than 40K, it's far simpler than 40K, and once an army list is done, it's done until they update the new rulebook. New .PDF suppliments for extra units/campaigns are free off of the Specialty Military Publishing website, and the community around it can generally help you find anything you're looking for if it's out there. So without further adeu, here're some (poorly lit) pictures of my Canadians for CWC. Others will follow later. Be forewarned that autofocus seems to have a hard time picking out the tiny little infantry, especially when parts of their body closely match their background. So yea, working camouflage, but it's a pain in the arse. So there you go, that's what I've been doing for the last few months since my P&M went bare. Like I said, other nationalities will follow later.

And we're back with more Cold War Commander. Thanks to QRF's "Big British Sale" this summer, I scored a good haul of 3 packs of British infantry and a Sultan. Haven't painted many of them yet, but here's what I've got: I also scooped up some Irregular Minis US Infantry cheap on Ebay, painted them up in ACU, and added an Apache: Finally, I've got some Ex-Soviet equipment representing a small, unknown Eastern European nation called "Krasnotav". For some reason, Autofocus had a -really- hard time picking these guys out, which is odd, because their BDUs are painted in Gorod... So that's it so far. I really haven't added much to the finished collection. I will add pictures of an HMMWV and a UAZ-469 soon, but for now, there's a few more shots in my gallery

They're cool...but shiny?
I really dig the vehicles and the Soviet-esque figures the most. I'm not sure why. I think, perhaps, that the camo schemes on the Canadians and US are very good and therefore make them blend into their scenery which means they don't "POP" out at the viewer.
EDIT: Somehow I missed seeing the Brits the first time. I like them too!

Yea, you'll notice that most 15mm minis have some degree of gloss to them. This is due to the fact that, to avoid rampant chipping, you either have to paint them in enamel (Eww), or put hardcoat over your acrylic (Most people choose this). After that you hit it with a dullcoat, but it doesn't always cure properly. You can definately tell which ones it did and did not cure properly on, and I've tried re-coating the ones that didn't take the finish, but they seem stuck being glossed, even after a few layers of dullcoat.
Painting in 15mm/1:100 has definately been a huge learning experience. Very different from working with 28mm.

Well, as promised, here're photos of the finished HMMWV and UAZ-469. First up, the UAZ. Because they're sexy, and they go like a raped ape: And what would modern minis be without the beast of beastly 4X4's... the AM General/General Dynamics HMMWV: I've also been taking tonight to work on my totally untouched stands of Insugents and Rebels/Mercenaries. First up, because I found the mix of east and west kit to be more fun to paint, are the rebel/merc units. I had to snap these shots in a hurry, as my battery in my camera was flashing on dead, but when it's charged, and I've accomplished a bit more, I'll take more shots: It's a bit difficult to tell, but they're all wearing mixtures or different sets of camo. The most obvious being the one buddy with his OD Green BDU Jacket and Russian/Soviet 2-tone camo pants. Bah. Will get better pictures. Next up are the Irregular Miniatures generic middle-eastern insurgents, using a mix of civilian, 80's/90's US, and ex-Soviet gear:

Well, along with the stand of rebel/mercenary infantry I finished, I also slapped paint on their Toyota, as seen below:
Still needs to be based, but the model is good to go. After I finished that, I found myself a little bored, and unsure what to start on next. So, I decided to give myself a cheap laugh. Behold, Lolzilla the Demon Prince, as he takes on the unfortunate Krasnotavian troops:
Yep. That's what happens when you get bored having a day off in the middle of the week.
I also snapped some shots of some of the Chaos stuff on my shelf. Some of it is already in the missus' gallery, but here're a few more shots. Most notably, I've finished the lord that was featured earlier in the blog as a WIP:
And a few marines...
And here're some WIP shots of their Rhino:

*Blows dust off thread, duct tapes the loose bits that have started falling off*
Huh. This is still here. And I have pictures to add... Fancy that?
What's up Dakka? A lot's happened in the last 4 years... Couple of career changes, but I'm happy where I'm at. I'm sorry about your mom and I, I wish it would've ended better but you know how these things are sometimes. Oh well. Anyway, I'm painting again. I know, I know, we talked about this and I swore after what happened last time, I wouldn't embarrass you in front of your friends. But I'm a changed man. That sort of thing won't happen again. My pants will stay on when I paint now, I promise. Besides, if I don't, that'd be a breach of my parole. We don't wants that.
Now then, on to the painting and pants wearing bits. So, buddy moved to a new house and while I was digging his 40K stuff out of storage, I had the craziest desire to start painting again. So we got the workbench set up in his basement and things went from there. A couple months ago, we decided to just repaint the -whole- swarm of his partially (and poorly) painted Nids with something more... Interesting. We opted for Junglebugs, and the angry green swarm started to take shape with the first Genestealers.
Now, these are cellphone pics, because I'm not very smart and my memory is rubbish. I keep forgetting my HD camera at home. BUT I SWEAR I WILL BRING IT. My pants are still on as of writing this, as promised, so you know I'm an honest fella. It'll get done. Anyway, bad lighting and grainy cellphone pics aside, here are some very early shots of the first models. We've actually done a lot more but again, my memory stinks and I never stop to photograph them. Maybe running this P&M again will help that:
Not shown: The rest of the `Stealers we`ve done, Rippers, `Gaunts, a second Lictor, and a `Fex being painted to resemble a giant angry rock covered in moss.
But because I have a long history of lacking self control, it didn't stop there. I also started painting the Dark Eldar that I've had lying around for...
...
...How long -have- I had these for?
Huh. Anyway, here they are:
Some images have them washed, some are pre-wash, I'm not doing this in any particular order. I just wanted to get that out there, you know? Because we needed to talk again. We're family, Dakka, we're all we have.
In all seriousness though, it does feel pretty good to be updating this again after...
Wait, -how long?-

Good News Everyone! Today you'll be making a delivery to Tetanus IV, the planet whose surface is made up entirely of sharp, rusty pieces of metal. Also, I'm home from Edmonton!
I forgot to mention in my last post, we organized the -crap- out of our bitz boxes a while ago...
Took like 2 days, but it was totally worth it. We double teamed those boxes and bitzed them harder than they've ever been bitzed before. We also rid ourselves of probably close to 40 lbs of sprues as a result.
Now then, first up: One of two current projects on the Tyranid side of things. Presenting my work-in-progress on the Stonefex:
As the description says, it's a Carnifex trying to camouflage as a giant boulder. An angry, stompy, smashy, stabby, killy boulder. Around the edges, where the green shading is on his back, it'll get some mixed fine green flocking to look like moss. I'll also be adding some dirt/dust effects when everything else is done, to make it look like it just unburrowed itself, then hunted down and stomped those two unfortunate Dark Eldar adorning his base.
Also, the second Lictor that was finished but not photographed until now:
A couple of Hormagaunts as well. Was gonna drybrush the ribcages to match the Warriors' ribs, but honestly THERE ARE SO MANY OF THEM. If it happens it'll be post literally -everything- else. Including non-Tyranid stuff.
The one, lone base of Rippers that are actually glued down:
A shot of several of the finished Genestealers:
And a shot of most of the painted Nids, as well as a small picture of some of the Genestealers in need of repainting still. This is not counting the stuff on the "To-Do" shelf in the workroom:
And last but not least, a picture of 4 of the Dark Eldar I've had sitting finished for a while:
Cheers!

Back from Edmonton. And while I didn't get a tan, I did polish off a considerable amount of free cans of Lucky while I was there. You have to take time to count the small things.
Anyway, we managed to kill two of our bigger remaining models on the 'Nid side tonight. Both the Stonefex and the Zonethrope have been added to the swarm:
For the Stonefex, you might remember I mentioned that we wanted it to look like a big mossy rock. I think the effect came out not too bad, but a lot of the fine flock I had used for moss ended up coming off before I got the pictures. Not enough glue, and I didn't paint over it with more after it dried. Lesson learned, I'll have to go back and touch it up.
With the Zonethrope's base, we wanted to somehow emphasize that it can pretty much brain its way through stuff. Like walls. So that's exactly what we made it look like on its base - like it's punching through a bunker or wall with its brain joo-joo.
And an updated picture of the swarm so far, featuring the new additions.
For a long time now, buddy and I have wanted to have at least a small Ork army. Nothing huge, just enough for us to swap up and play a different race in at least a minimum 2-Troop 1- HQ battle. So, while I was in Edmonton, I scooped up 2 boxes of Boyz and a Mek. We weren't sure exactly how to paint them, but we ended up going with Guerrillas. I'm feeling this might have been the right choice, as painting mixes of different camo, OD, and brown uniforms (and the occasional obligatory white-and-blue-striped Soviet sailor shirt ) will keep them from getting boring to paint. Time efficiency be damned on that one. Plus, then we get to paint slogans and intentionally bad-looking "Red Starz" on their vehicles. Wins all around. I ran a colour test on the first one just to see how we might want to tackle them:
Vietnam "Tiger Stripe" camo just seemed like the natural first choice for the test mini. Overall, I think we're both set on the idea. Even if it does mean I have to sculpt the odd beret, field cap, or beard here and there.

Sorry about the silent treatment folks. Did some painting on the weekend of the 20th/21st but forgot to take pictures, and then was in Vancouver for the missus' cheer competition. Where I almost died of Norwalk virus. Seriously, you wouldn't think death by dehydration would be that bad - we've all been hungover or dehydrated to a degree before and yea it sucks, but it's not -awful-.
But it gets worse. So, so much worse. I wouldn't torture my worst enemy (if I had one) in that way. I should actually probably be absolutely elated to still be breathing right now, considering, but I'm still powering through the virus' last remaining efforts to make its eventual departure miserable for me.
Hoping I'll be feeling better and get a chance to do more work and post more pictures this weekend, just wanted to leave an update for anyone watching this and waiting for new images.

It's been a busy few weeks and I haven't had as much time to paint as I'd like, but I finished off a couple models in the span of the few short hours I had to paint last night.
First, I more or less finished that Chaos Rhino that's been sitting half-done for years (Also, can anyone think of a reason other than "GRIMDARK" as to why a pintle weapon would have a bayonet? I mean really...):
I say "more or less" because I may still add a few small freehand details here and there, and there are a couple spots I already notice I forgot or need to touch up, but it's done enough I feel okay putting it on the army shelves with the rest.
I also finished an assault marine that, up until now, had spent the last 4 years as a codex grey jump pack on a black primed marine. Nothing special, but I decided it's time to start picking through a few of my marines at the same time as we work through the Orks. And the Tau. And the Chaos. And the Nids. And the Dark Eldar. And you know? It's becoming apparent that I have a problem
Lastly, I've decided to hunker down and solidify some Chapter fluff. As such, I've decided that these guys are an Imperial Fists successor; If only so that I can include one of the most bad-ass units, even if he is horribly likely to die almost immediately...
The Emperor's Champion has made his way through my old Black Templars army, into some Simple Green, out to a coat of primer, and finally arrived at the first fresh coats of paint. He'll be painted as one of the 1st Company members (Which reminds me his shins and boots should be black, not grey ) since that's where the chapter's most honoured members end up. Seems fitting then, that he'd be inducted for all of his likely short, quarter/half-game lifespan:
Lots of work to do on him, not sure how much I'll focus on getting him done as I still have a lot of standard units to do, but he's on the bench and officially started, so that's something.

Got a few more additions! Would still like to have more opportunity to paint, but it is what it is for now!
First off, I scored big. FLGS had looted a Chaos starter box for bitz and didn't use the Hellbrute, so they tossed it on the shelf for $14.99 CAD. So yea, I got a brand new Dreadnazi for $20 after tax! Only just started painting him, but I have a feeling he's going to be really enjoyable. Been awhile since I've done any corrupted looking flesh tones.
On the Dark Eldar front, I believe I forgot pictures of this Fusion Gunner when I painted him. So here he is in all of his prancing space-elf glory:
And the gang so far:
I also spotted this swaggery looking bastard in my mixed rectangle of mixed primed/unprimed marines and was like "Ay bby. U wan sum paint?" Oh yea, look at him in all of his majesty! That looks really good, comin' outta the back of his neck there...
And last but not least, I had completely forgotten that I had received a whole bunch of the snap together Planetary Empires tiles for campaigns years ago, and dug them out. Primed some and added a few to the stack. Expanding into some desert tiles, and I think it'll be time for a solid campaign soon!

Well holy crap.
Between working as an office manager at one company and often going straight from there to my financial business, I wasn't sure if I'd ever get a chance to paint things this summer. But the Emperor has smiled upon me, and graced me with a Saturday afternoon with nothing to do, and so I hopped (Don't lie you lazy feth. You drove) over to buddy's place and got right into it.
I finished that Chaos dreadnought but damn! That thing took -time-! Still, I'm happy with how it came out:
Most of the time I had to sink into him was just getting the flesh tones right. I think that's like 4 or 5 different colours to get the right sort of bruised, pallid look I wanted. But it worked. Not as well as it did on the Daemon Prince mind you, but I don't think I'll quite achieve it as perfectly as I did on him.
I also decided to dive into getting the Noise Marines (that I've had for like 8 years unpainted...) done. Naturally, this meant painting the sergeant first. Massive, distracting old pewter mold line that I didn't see running down his face until it was too late aside, I think he'll fit in just fine:
I also thought I'd get a shot of all of the CSM tactical marines together, since I don't think I've taken pictures of them since the last few additions:
And last but not least, I've actually had this picture for a month or two and just never put it up. But I did finish the Emperor's Champion that I had posted as a WIP back a ways:
Cheers folks!

Thanks! Looking through your gallery at some of the stuff you've painted, that's high praise indeed! He was fun to paint but I'm glad he's done. There was a -lot- of layering involved to get the right colours and the right amount of the army's signature "grime" look. There were a lot of "Feths" uttered while painting him...
The noise marine sergeant was actually surprisingly simple for what I had assumed was going to be a very complex model. Then again maybe that was just by comparison to the Hellbrute
It sounds like I'll have more time to paint through August and September so that'll be good, I was jonesing pretty hard to get back into it.

I'm back! No, I haven't been on a hiatus. I've actually just been stupid busy. Between serving as a managing partner in a financial centre downtown, working as an office manager in a warehouse, prepping for a Spartan Race that the missus made me run because I think she enjoys watching me suffer, and house hunting I've had to pick up a paint brush in bits here and there, whenever I can.
But- (And it's a big butt, because everyone loves big butts) I've been making it count. I've finished a Noise Marine, a standard Spikey Marine, I finalized the colour pallet for the dozen or so random Tau sitting in a box, and I built a little objective marker (And no I don't know why my camera was being so finicky with the lighting it usually loves:
Buddy and I also picked up like 2 or 3 sheets of 2.5" thick pink insulation board on his contractor discount and went about building a massive series of trenches, artillery pits, depots, etc...
...As well as a giant volcano base for Warboss Fidel Blastro and his Freedum Fightas. Of course, being the dolt I am I completely forgot to get any pictures of what we've carved out so far (None of it is painted or detailed or even remotely close to done yet) but rest assured I will include photographs the next time I'm there.
Once the missus and I get possession on the 15th of October and we get settled in, I'm hoping to get another paint station set up so that I can update this regularly like I used to. I'm also eyeing the crap out of selling off my guard infantry and restarting with a whole bunch of Anvil Industries' customizable squads. We'll see!
Cheers!

Thanks Kernel, your cultists look like they're coming along great! It definitely is a game-changer, and we're pretty excited! It'll be nice to not have to keep packing up and moving every few years. Not to mention it's literally cheaper in this city to own a house and pay your mortgage and bills every month than rent a place of the same size with utilities covered. Tau, Tau, and more Tau!
Yes, after I found all the pieces of a partially assembled Hammerhead, a box full of 11 or so unpainted Fire Warriors and a full box of Kroot still on the sprue tucked away in a corner of the workstation, I decided it was only fitting that we expand it into a playable force. Plus, I had bought a Battlesuit Commander that I really wanted to paint up and surround with an admirable army. A huge shout-out goes to Dakka user gameandwatch for supplying me with a supply of second hand minis that would've cost around $400 CAD new for around $180 CAD. If you ever see his sale threads up, I recommend checking them out!
For the Kroot, we decided to go with a something of a traditional brown-ish coloured desert bird look. Typically, males in many bird species tend to have bright colours on their heads to attract females, while the females are often much more unassuming so as to aid in camouflage. With that in mind, we did "Male" and "Female" mockups. I'm not sold on the pink warpaint that buddy did on the male - looks too much like Kroot in drag but I do like the black and red beak. The blades on their weapons we wanted to look like they were fashioned from some kind of deep-blue obsidian-like material:
I also managed to get most of the way through one of the 3 Hammerheads. I decided that, to tie in with the pseudo-Soviet/modern look of the Fire Warriors, I'd go with a camo inspired by the same. I settled on a cold-war era paintjob that I saw on a number of pictures of old Soviet T-72s and Syrian T-55s/T-62s. As an added bonus, the paint scheme was, by default, almost a perfect match to the infantry. The only difference being that the vehicles have black splinters, while the infantry have brown splinters. As you'll see, I still have to finish the engines and do some touch-ups and weathering/shading on the railgun, but otherwise she's basically finished:
And again, the infantry palette for cross-reference. Note the SVD/AK-influenced Pulse Rifle:
Next few weeks are going to be a blur of home renos, moving, and weekends out of town. Not sure where I'll find time in there to paint, but rest assured that you'll get updates if I can! And it'll be nice to get a proper paint station set up in my home again!

I. Hate. Moving. And I hate moving during Christmas. Can't a man get time to paint?
Oh well, I've got my painting station set up and have been chipping away at a hilarious new idea thanks to a Spikey Bitz swag shipment I received that consisted of a Kromlech sample and a Burning of Prospero tactical squad. I've decided I'm going to turn 9 of those Mk III marines and 9 of the Betrayal at Calth Mk IV marines into original legion Christmas ornaments for 2017! Step one is getting them all good and painted up, and so far I've got 3 of them done!
I REEEEEEALLY wanted to try my hand at the high-gloss "Candy Apple Red" style of Thousand Sons I've seen around the internet (Plus I had a pre-heresy looking 1K Sons head from the Kromlech sample and just -had- to use it) and so that was my first one, and so far the one that I'm happiest with:
The second one was an Iron Warrior, since I figured that the only armour that really suited the Iron Warriors was... Well, Mk III "Iron". Plus his painting process basically consisted of "DRYBRUSH -ALL- THE THINGS" at its core. And because I really wanted to try freehanding some caution stripes (Don't worry though, I won't be quitting my day job to freehand legion insignias apparently )
And lastly, I finished an Iron Hand. Because again, "Iron in the name" -> Iron Armour. And Drybrushing. And didn't turn heretic so the Inquisition won't need to be worried about me having a blasphemous bias...
Lighting isn't as good on this one as I snapped his pictures at night and had to use the desk lamp but, I mean, they're gunmetal and black. It's pretty easy to imagine how that looks.
And of course, a little teaser of who's next!

Ask and ye shall receive!
Over the weekend, I managed to finish up the Death Guard and World Eater, as well as start a bunch of terrain!
Up first, the World Eater. I think the combination of Red Ink and my own mixture of Red Gore turned out well as far as making him look like he just went to town on a collection of enemy faces:
And of course, the Death Guard. This guy was actually super frustrating. Either the paint refused to stick to the model, or it stuck too well and I had to paint him with straight water to try and thin the already thinned paint down more. I did get him done, but I didn't enjoy it and I'm not happy with the outcome really. Huge shame, since he was one of the ones I was looking forward to painting the most. Oh well, he's done and done to Christmas Ornament standards
And I also spent a day at a friend's, building some serious terrain because, hey, never enough:
There's also a giant landing pad/artillery pit/command post with removable roofing on the perimeter bunkers, but I never snapped a shot of it Next time! The trenches will all be velcro'ed/magnetized together so they can be switched and swapped at leisure.

Ooh. That deathguard guy did turn out nice. Also, very nice trenchline. Looks like it will be awesome all painted up.

Thanks Brush, you and I both are looking forward to it! I hope to have at least a couple segments of it done before my Anvil Industries Trenchers show up to replace my current Guard!
Shadow! You'll be glad to know then that pictures of one of the Vlka Fenryka are due next since I finished him last night! How ya been, still trying to keep warm up in PG?

-Rocks back and forth-
I actually bought Prospero -just- to throw in some old fashioned Space Wolves. I've still those gakky looking Grey Space Wolves. But I feel my brush game is much better then when I was a teenager.
Yeah, I don't -have- to go outside often to do everything that needs doing, so i've kept mostly warm. I've heard it's not nessisarily been sunny down there either.

Little Simple Green will ungakk those in a jiffy and let you put that honed brushmanship to work!
And no, it has been ridiculous and cold and stupid and snowy and WHY IS THIS HAPPENING I LIVE IN THE CANADIAN DESERT (WELL IT'S ACTUALLY MORE OF AN ARID GRASSLAND STEPPE, BUT STILL)
Oh well, at least cold, snowy, icy crap weather is just the right kind to be painting a Space Wolf! Here he is, in all of his "WolfWolfWolfWolfWolfWolfWolfWolfWolfWolf" glory:
I really enjoyed painting this one. The primer behaved well, the paints went on smooth, and I got to use another Kromlech bit, which is always fun!
But what's a Space Wolf without sworn rivals? To quote If The Emperor Had A Text-To-Speech Device: "Lion for life, dog-f***er"
That puts the count up to 7! Only three more to go before I switch over to finishing the remaining eight legions in Mk IV! All that's left is Imperial Fists, White Scars, and Luna Wolves - I'm opting for the LW over the SoH, as they didn't adopt the Sons mantra until Horus had been corrupted but had not yet openly turned.

Nice. I really like the space wolf. Which other three legions are getting the MKIII?

White Scar (Their mini is done, I just haven't posted it. Mostly because I hate painting in white, it always comes out looking awful lol. I'll get to it at some point though ), Imperial Fist (Almost done, just touch-ups and shading mostly), and a Luna Wolf (As I said before, I didn't want to do SoH since Horus had already secretly turned when he made that change)
The remaining 8 legions will be getting MkIV, though I'll use a beaky head for the Raven Guard and an Aquila chest piece for the Emperor's Children ornament. The Ultramarine ornament will also be a throwback to the old pewter "Punching the air" Powerfist sergeants of yore .

Good stuff. Was the ork top-knot a trophy for the white scar or did he get it from "lockz for love?" Also the crest works well on the IF sgt. Can't wait to see the rest!
ps. grudging admiration for the paintjob on your ugly xenos pets...

Hahaha the top knot was indeed literally from the Ork Sprue. Didn't feel like Forge-Worlding some top-knot Mk III heads for one guy We'll just say that, lorewise, he pulled it off a Nob, beat it to death with its own topknot, and then used said topknot for himself to compliment the "ravishing mustache" he has under that helmet.
And thank you, I was going for their "Line Command" emblem. I think for trying to do it quickly it turned out alright!

Nice work dude. The Salamander is particularly cool.
Great work on the CSM too.

Thanks cheese! I've been meaning to get back to them since they've been largely sitting untended for the better part of 4 years. Now that I have the paint station set up, I've been plugging away at the mass of Tac marines

Those Emperor's Children, both Pre and Post heresy. -Really- takes me back.
I should get one of these going. I get told all the time my Death Guard look good. But i'll let Dakka's critics be the judge of that.

I think cocaine-era EC are actually reversed - pink primary, black trim. These guys are homebrew because I'm totally a rebel and non-conformist. But not like friggin' hipsters. It's totally different, I swear.
