Heyoh. So I guess I should do a painting blog of some sort, seeing how that's what everyone else is doing. And it's always best to copy other people. Clearly that's the way to do it.
So I guess this blog will be for my Guardsmen. Marines can bloody well wait their turn. I paint for the tabletop, so if you're looking for display minis that have many hours poured into detailing for each mini alone, this is the wrong blog. There're details, but only enough to make them satisfying to the eyes. When you're planning to go Apoc with them, painting Guardsmen to a display piece standard can be a painful experience. I don't like painful experiences... Unless it's alcohol and video camera induced pain. Then it's Fething hilarious.
Anyway, that's more than enough steady text without any pictures, so here're the fighting men of the Ariminium 51st Regiment.
The army at it's current stage. I haven't figured out total points yet... Should probably do that...
My Colonel. Sculpted the field cap with my Xacto Knife, which was a nightmare. I didn't like it at first, but it's grown on me. Of course the Cadian Command sprue came out a few months later and it has a field cap head. That made me angry. Very angry.
My Lieutenant. Greenstuffed the Beret, Sash, and gun strap. The Beret is the only part (IMHO) that came out close to the way I had hoped. Even then I wish I would've straightened out the side of it on the left. It looks better in hand than on screen. Maybe I'll snap another shot after work today (Yes I'm slacking off right now. It's a Saturday, bite me ) And again, just like with the cap, the Catachan Beret head filled bitz order sites the day the Catachan Command Sprue was released
My favorite Commissar out of the two. Just sheerly for the "I stand in incoming fire and shoot at you!" pose.
My custom Officer of the Fleet. Because I try to avoid buying pewter at all costs on account of the immesuable burning hatred I hold for it... Plus, I had to do SOMETHING with the leftovers from the Command Sprue.
And one of a few of my common soldiers. I'll post more pictures when I finish my WIP Chimera, Armaggeddon Sentinel, and Platoon of Guardsmen.
Speaking of WIPs...
This is my Recce team Sergeant. I asked in my gallery for suggestions on cool tips but people seem to not realize you can comment on an image and I haven't had any ideas posted on him there. The whole team will be done up with the pewter bits and any other stuff I add. If you've got any ideas for heads I should swap out, kit I could add, GSing I could do (bear in mind, I have no modelling tools other than my knife and the hardware stores here never freaking stock any ) I've looked at the Pig Iron heads but everybody uses those. I'm hoping for some good sci-fi headswaps from another line. Links and pics appreciated!
Thanks for looking through. I'll be adding more photos as time goes on... And if my damned Satan cat can stop climbing onto my shelves and table and getting hair on my minis
I like them, for table top standard, shame tha I promised myself that I would paint everything amazingly.
Anywho I hope you will base these, ( I havn't based a model in ages aswell) thats will make them better, and better quality for the table
For the seargent, Try an officers, hat or something of the sort, instead of the cadian helm, that may really make him look awesome !
And then keep the standard adian heads for the standard infantry.
Should look really nice.
I was thinking of bitz ordering the Cadian head with the eyepatch/single visor and painting it up to look sort of like the cross-comm from Ghost Recon. I did this on my Metlagunner that I convreted from a Flamethrower and it fit well, though I think it'd look better in Ice Blue than in Green like I did it.
I also thought about using the Beret from the Catachan Sprue, because I might be ordering one to replace my current LT's Beret
And yea I ran out of basing rock and the train shop I got it from is now shut down :( I'm not sure I like the rock basing anyway, so I'm thinking about what else I could do.
I know, I know, I haven't updated in a while. Work keeps me too busy and tired to paint. Good news however: I did get to finishing my second Chimera though, and I have an Armaggeddon Pattern Sentinal, a Lascannon team and a Drop Pod built (On a sad note, as the Drop Pod was a gift from my family while they were in Edmonton, it had to sit in the trunk on the way back and the Trusses got warped pretty bad so it didn't all fit right :() I also have a Land Raider that needs assembling, and one of the old platoon size boxes of Guardsmen to put together, so expect a lot of WIP updates (Mods, on that note perhaps this should be in the P&M Blogs section instead?)
I also picked up some Devlan Mud WOWsh -"It brings your minis to LIFE!" (Sorry, had to quote Luna's poster. ShamWOW guy rules )
Hmm... And this weekend is payday. I think I may go on a scavenger hunt to some local hardware stores and start a random impulsive terrain project... Mmm... Yes, quite...
Anyway, be sure to check back. I think I might finish up my Space Marine Company soon. Guardsmen are getting a bit dull...
Alright, so I've managed to snap a few shots today now that my Basement is cleaned up some and I can actually get to my table now. I've been throwing Devlan Mud on my Guardsmen but I'm not quite finished yet. I'll post a few that I've done though. I'll also toss in some WIP shots of what I've assembled so far. I'll likely be building a Veteran squad next for my Guard, because I don't really feel like working on the Land Raider that I got with the Drop Pod, and I want to work with my new sculpting tools some more
Alright, so post-washing shots as follows:
Tank Commander for my Chimera Formation. I use him in games involving the "Disembark Crew" Houserule (Tank Crews can abandon their vehicles if they become immobilized or all weapons are destroyed). The guy behind him is a crewman with a welding torch (Counts as CCW)
And his trusted Chimera
I like this guy, so he got a wash. I think he's the only regular trooper to have one thusfar too. He's also the only blonde Guardsman in my army at this point
My more badass of the two Commissars post-wash. Both of them got one, but my batteries ran out :(
Kasrkin Sergeant after a wash. I'm really loving the shadows around his eyes. That area came out really well IMHO
Officer of the Fleet. This guy's face washed over really well. I'm very satisfied with the shading on this one.
Last but not least, my Lieutenant. Unfortunately, the shading didn't quite come out as strong as I'd hoped for him. He may need a little more IMO. What does DakkaDakka say?
--WIPS--
Firstup is a Lascannon Team I'm working on. Chopped up a Vox Set to make it look like one of them is carrying a mobile Las-Cell charger. Still needs a bit of cuttings and filing but it's roughly where I want it to be. No ideas for the base yet. Suggestions are open.
My 50% painted Regimental Standard Bearer. Nothing too special here. Might give him a Stogie to puff on while he's waving the flag around
Sentinel WIP. Can kinda see from the shot how I angled him at a bit of a tilt, like he's firing over the edge of a ruined wall or a big rock. Thinking of one of the two for his base. Probably the ruined building corner.
And lastly my Drop Pod WIP. I guess the support trusses got warped thanks to the box sitting in the hot trunk on the way back from Edmonton. Unfortunately none of the the local FLGS sell enough of them for me to exchange it, so I got stuck with the thing. It wasn't as badly warped as I first thought, but only one of the doors closes completely and I did have to add some GS to the bottom of one of the Trusses to get it to fit right.
That's all for now. Like I said, probably going to work on a Veteran Squad next. Gives me a chance to play with my Greenstuff. So next update will be... well... I'm not sure (I'm a bit of a slow updater... stupid living expenses requiring a job )
Well, I'm stuck at work, the phones aren't ringing, so I'm devoid of things to do and my driver isn't back with my lunch... I'll post a few shots of the giant hilltop "Made for Apoc" gun emplacement that I'm working on in hopes of milking a few more comments from the otherwise silent community. :(
Scale shot
Front shot
Overhead shot
Also: Mmmm, popsicles... Or... Mini Frandises if you're French... Whatever
It's slow at work so I'mma write a short story for it (Gun Emplacement)
It was an odd sensation when the Terminus Line fired one of it's cannons. He never did get used to it. Then again, judging by the way everyone else ducked and fell silent when they heard the thunderous roar of the massive guns, he wasn't the only one. The rumbling tremor of the shot, following shortly thereafter, passed through their trenches violently. Even though the Gunline was just over one hundred Kilometers away, It sent out a shock that rattled boards loose, tripped men up, and collapsed weakened walls. Shouts and cries rang out as troopers were partially buried under small mudslides. Damien helped pull the trooper next to him out of the thick jungle sludge that swamped and congealed in the bottom of their section of earthwork. He wiped something warm from the side of his face, and realized that his ears were bleeding.
Then the flash. Emperor's blood, was it ever bright. The shells hit with a fury unimaginable by all but those who bore witness to their terrifying power. The sight was magnificent and sinister in equal measure - for it revealed something that the dim light of the late evening sky did not. Stalking towards them through the underbrush and gnarled swamp trees were hundreds - thousands even - of Cultists and heretical soldiers. Every few hundred feet or so stood the towering figure of a traitor Astartes, their enhanced optics disabled to hide the glow of the visors on their helmets.
"CONTACT! CONTACT! BLOODY CONTACT! Screamed a spotter down the line, despite the fact that most of the men had already seen the approaching doom.
"Firing Stations! Get on those emplacements double quick time! Fix Bayonets and get up to the damn line!" Bellowed Lieutenant Gravicus.
Heeding the Lieutenant's call, Damien slid his Bayonet out from it's sheath and clipped it into place below his barrel. Levelling his Lasgun on the mess of Sandbags and Debris before him, Damien sighted his weapon and, picking out a visible shape in the darkness, added the sharp crack of his shots to the symphony of gunfire that now dominated the ambience of the night. Yet even through the fierce exchange, they all still heard the terrible roar as the mighty cannons fired another barrage.
RedSarge wrote:Where are those shoulders from? The ones the recon sarge is wearing?
Abherrant Games CSO Peacekeepers. The minis themselves work well as Elysians if you cut off the gas mask chambers
EDIT: What don't you like about the OotF Cheese? Just the dark colours? Might be the lighting. The lamp I used for the shots was coloured red with a sharpie by one of my drunk fethwad buddies
I'm not sure why I haven't changed the bulb yet... Then again it's still a good bulb...
Lol, I've got bloody eagle eyes! Knew it. But other than that, I really love your work. And woot to the CAF, did my BMQ at CFLRS St.Jean, got myself severely injured in battle school, and got put on that crap where they had me working at the CFRC in my hometown, and then medically released.
@Cheese. Just the feet, the long toe is meant to be forward.
Alright, so as promised, here're some shots of the GS done to the two current members of the Recce team. Still a lot of cleanup and touchup to do on these guys, but I'll probably have at least one finished by this weekend.
Firstup, the Sergeant. The strips on his helmet house the power supply for his tactical HUD (Think of the Cross-Com in GRAW). Each member will have one when the work is finished.
And some GS work on "Breacher", my doorbuster unit. Got his extra plating done, but still need attach his arm. He'll either be holding an Adamantium Riot Shield and carrying a breaching tool on his back, or holding the ram and carrying the shield. Which should I go for?
That's it for now. I'll post more this weekend when I get to work more on it. I was just to drunk last weekend. Just... Just too drunk.
Thanks Still got 3 more to customize so any suggestions for them are welcome Good to see at least one person is following this thread (Hint, Dakka! Shutup and talk more!)
Hmm.. a recce team needs a pointman who is loaded down with rapid fire weapons, a lurky sniper and a comms specialist. I guess the sniper could be replaced by some other special weapon type but I think snipers just feel sneakier
I don't think they'll have a designated Comms unit, instead all of them will be equipped with compact long range Vox units as a giant Vox Mast poking up isn't exactly covert or practical in their situation, especially when fluffwise, they'd often be forced to split up into fireteams.
The sniper and HW Trooper sound good though. I still got an SM Scout Torso with the cloak and rifle so I might use that for my sniper
Now you have me thinking about GRAW.... Havent played it in an age. Sniper is a must, as is a comms man. The other striking images I have is a few men 'stacking up' to breach and clear a door, aswell as a medic hauling a wounded comrade from the fray. And lastly, a trooper with a ZEUS MPAR (at least I think thats the name).
I Got you thinking about GWAR? Or GRAW? If it's GWAR! You're thinking of, I won't ask
And yea GRAW was the rough basis for them Suprisingly I never even finished the first one...
But yea, the Sergeant I modelled with the sort of tenseness you'd feel playing the game and moving through a seemingly empty street knowing that one or two shots could kill you easily. Breacher I pictured after watching a TV Documentary about working as a member of an Emergency Response Team in a Prison, where they'd line up behind the guy with the shield, kick the door in, and then pile on top of the prisoner.

MEDIC! That's what I'm missing!
His nickname shall be 'Stitches'
Ah! Brainmelt! I am listening to GWAR currently though. Still, better edit myself...
The first GRAW was a pain to finish (I will admit I used cheats to finish the first one on hard. Otherwise it was too difficult). I also finished the second one, but it was way easier.
And in regards to the medic. I told you I'm useful! And if you are thinking a SWAT team style feel, then you need a knife/stun batton/close quarters specialist perhaps?
Just a heads up folks, this thread isn't dead - Just in a form of suspended animation. Been really busy lately and haven't had a chance to get much P&M done. Rest assured though I'm moving along at a creep. I've been teaching my girlfriend how to play 40K and she's absolutely loving the playing aspect, though she's still none too hot about the hours of painting involved
I've also gotten around to building a large Cathedral to his Holy grace, the God Emperor. Lots of foamcore cutting, but the end result is something I'm eager for, so I'm working that when I get the chance. New terrain means I need new minis to use with it, so expect some updates at some point in the near future. Hopefully I'll have some time with an extra day off this weekend to get some work done
Anyway, if you stop by the thread, don't forget to post! I always need new ideas for units and terrain. So if you find yourself reading this and thinking "You know what would be cool?" post it so I can try and integrate your ideas. And of course, credit will be given where it's due
ALRIGHT! I finally have updates. Unfortunately, most of it isn't really relevant to my army. BUT I BETTER NOT HEAR ANY DAMN WHINING.
I finished the third Tank Crewman today. This one is carrying a Lasgun
And from the back
And yes, I've just become aware of his lazy eye, which I'm going to fix right after I post this.
Now then, the stuff that's not really relevant to my army, but needs posting on account of the wicked factor. The girlfriend's Chaos Daemons. That's right! She finally fell to the awesome power of... awesomehammer 40K. Queue victory tune.
She's doing a Khorne/Slaanesh mix, but she didn't want her Bloodletters to be the typical red-rocket colour. Being a big comic book fan, she came up with the idea of Spawn. We figured, if 40K is GRIMDARK, and Spawn is GRIMDARK, and Daemons are GRIMDARK... Then... That's like... A lot of GRIMDARK!!!!!1!1!!!!!1!!!!!!!!12!
Anyway, yea, so here're the first few off the assembly line
We wanted to do something to break up the repetativeness of Chaos Black with Shadow Grey dusting, so I opted for a sort of literal "Inner Fire", like there was something burning under their skin that managed to burst through along their spines. I think the overall effect came out quite nicely, and achieved a good contrast to the darker shades that cover the rest of the mini. And yes, I'm aware the flames are on upside down. M buddy was putting them together with us last night and there was beer involved... Yea. Nuff' said.
And here she is hard at work
I'm so proud!
That's it for now, got more on the way though (Yay creative second wind!)
Firstup, finished 'Breacher'. Unfotunately his combat shield blocks most of the GS work on his front with the extra armour and the GS'ed enclosed helmet, but I'm still happy with the final result.
The other side of his rebreather has ventilation holes (Think Grey Knights)
My 4th Tank Crewman, this time with a full Combat Harness.
Now some WiP shots:
First up, an Armaggedon Pattern Sentinel I'm working on.
And a closeup shot of the base's theme
And a last teaser: My newest Terrain project:
Note: That little black dot in the doorway? That's kind of a Guardsman... I sorta get carried away
Empchild wrote:love where your heading but PLEASE BASE THEM>>>HEAD GOING >>> TOOO>>> EXPLODE
Not sure what to do for a solid theme. Probably going to stick with Urban after looking at my sentinel, though I'll keep the ones that just have straight stone flocking.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Decided I'm going with an Urban theme on the bases. Just finished my Sentinel and the feel of the base is something I'm really liking. Need to pick up some sort of fine, chunky dust for small bits of rubble that I can cover the rest of the base with (Any ideas where I might find some good ruined-building quality powder?), but I'm definately sold on Urban bases. Once I finish this last old platoon box of Guardsmen (Miss the old x20's), I'll get my arse on some basing. Just primed the Vet squad's Sergeant tonight. I'll get pics tomorrow after work. Seems my Camera is dead - AGAIN. Damn Sony.
Anyway, I really don't see how this thread has nearly 2000 views and so few comments. Make a post if you visit. I need to know people actually give a damn or it takes the fun out of the work. Don't wanna loose my mojo again.
Finished the Sentinel late yesterday night. Also knocked off my Veteran Squad Sergeant (Who I actually did the sculpting for -before- I did the Breacher unit, hence the... ehh... of it)
Pics ahoy!
First up, the Sergeant. Being that these guys are the Vets, I decided to go the fluffy route with them and have them all equipped with gear they've resourcefully 'procured' throughout their time in service. The Sergeant shows this by sporting a set of MkII Fatigues like my Grenadiers are wearing.
Top
Some battle damage
And frontal
And second, my Sentinel. I based er' with an Urban Theme and I wanted to give it a really worn-down, rusted, neglected look. Like it had been fighting in the bombed out ruins for some great amount of time.
Side
Front
Rear
Not sure if there's enough going on with the base though. Probably add a propped up Lasgun to a wall, maybe some ammo boxes... I donno.
Anyway, that's it for tonight. And before I go, just to reiterate:

PLEASE Comment. It's important that people know their efforts are being appreciated, and I'm a big converter - I always want new ideas. So say something if you read this blog! 2000 Views, 2 pages, and most of the comments are mine. Pretty unappealing to me as the person running the blog. Right?
Cool IG mate! Like the sentinel's base, and the greenstuff armour - where did you get the bits for the breacher's rifle? The front looks a bit like a british SA80 w/UGL now.
Wow, what a thread. First time that I've seen it and I feel compelled to say you're doing a great job. I guess I'll be resurrecting my own P+M blog soon.
How did you get the battle damage effect on the armor? Did you say, or did I miss it
The Sentinel isn't very GRIMDARK yet, maybe it's just the lighting but I just don't feel like it fits with the rest of your excellent infantrymen.
Thanks for the comments! That's what I like to see! People saying something makes me a Happy Panda.
@slice of toast: The battle damage was really easy to do. I have a 3-piece set of GF9 Sculpting tools, and in it is a creasing tool for adding folds and wrinkles to clothing. It's also very sharp and I've stabbed it through my finger a few times. Anyway, I just made a small hole in the shoulderpad with it, and then dragged the barb across the surface several times, always focusing on that small hole I made. Eventually, it ended up giving the plastic a shredded, blown apart look
For the colouration, I Drybrushed Boltgun Metal, followed by Vermin Brown, and then finally with Chaos Black, making each layer smaller than the last to give it sort of a 'receding' look.
Maybe the Sentinel just has no black on it? It's just Bolgun Metal (Legs, Details) and Codex Grey (Cab, Toes, Eng. Case). If you have any ideas for some good old GRIMDARK40KIFICATION, lemmie hear!
Just happened across this, and ive gotta say its brilliant! I love the scheme you've got going on here.
Maybe you could do some night vision goggles on some of your vets?
Loving the sentinel base BTW, loads of character in there. Also, i know the feeling of getting carried away, but that makes building terrain so much more awesome! Cathedral and 'uge gun emplacement are really good.
Finally, definitely go urban bases, modelling sand with bits of sprue/ leftover cod pieces works great for this.
@ Vitruvian: The visors on the Vets are like the cross-com in GRAW, so Night Vision is sort of implemented (At least by their fluff). I may paint like a mini HUD on each of them down the road Thanks for the +1 on the Urban bases. Makes me feel a bit more sure on em'. And fine sand is a great idea! Never thought of that. I just need something powdery to look like concrete/plaster dust. White sand would work great!
I'm likin the Veteran Sargentwith the visor and badass gun sweet battle damage too. I also like your house rule to evacuate immobile vehicles, ill see if i can talk me and my friend to use that next time we play.
I'd like to say sorry to those folks that have been waiting for an update - contracted a bit of a stomach flu and I've been feeling like a pile of for the last 2 or so days. Hopefully it'll pass by quickly though, and then I can post a few more shots - a Lascannon team and a slew of Guardsmen are waiting for me to resume work on em'.
Sorry about the bout of silence. As I had said before, my bung was... well, bunged up.
Finally got back into go-mode though, and I've been working on some bases, as well as a Lascannon team.
First up, the Heavy Bolter team entrenched in ruins:
*The poster at the base of the HB says "He's fighting... ...Why aren't YOU?" for those wondering *
Next up, my Autocannon's new basework. In my fluff, the capital city of Patavium (and indeed much of the planet of Ariminium) resembles more of a 20th/21st century setting, hence the look of the street here. I didn't want my urban bases to be themed in the typical and all-too-common 'utterly bonbaonbardled to hell' look, so I'm going to be doing some road bases, as well as ruins.
My Officer of the Fleet, now with street marking flavor:
Lastly, some custom made campaign tiles. Planetary Empires is, to me, a great idea that's sadly too limited in choice. So, using some spare WHFB bases from the woman's Daemons, I decided to make my bloody own! They will be painted once I get a decent amount finished. Until then, they do look a lot smoother (in texture) than they actually are:
Really liking the sergeants mask! I may have to borrow that idea...
Have you considered a heavy weapons totting bruiser for your Vets? I made one using standard Cadian torso and legs, coupled with Catachan arms holding a SM scout heavy bolter (the one with the drum magazine) and a backpack off the HW sprue. Someone to cover their rear perhaps?
The sentinel looks great, but I think your reds are a bit too bright- trying giving them a dark wash. Also, as it uses a lot of boltgun metal, hit the actual "metal" parts with a 1:1 mix of purple and black. You should find it really lifts it.
Thanks for the tips Cadian! I actually hadn't really thought about how to go about making a HW Vet, so thanks for the pointers. The same for the paint on the sentinel. The oily look didn't come out as dark as I'd hoped with Devlan Mud, so I'll try your suggestion. Making a run to my FLGS today so I'll be sure to grab some more stuff. If anyone also has anything they'd like to see me add to the army, let me know. I'm halfway through building my last 20-man box of Guardsmen so if anyone wants to see something particular added, let me know.
EDIT: Sonofa... I can't believe I forgot to post the lascannon in my last update. Here ya go:
The chopped up Vox Caster on the loader is supposed to be a Mobile Charge Pack for recharging the Lascannon's battery cells.
This is some really great stuff. I'm working on painting a tabletop-quality guard army myself (when I can avoid extreme distraction via =][=munda), so I'll be closely following your blog here. Thanks for the inspiration!

Just checking this blog for the first time in a while. I really like the heavy weapons teams. Just as I imagined them, hiding amongst ruins and other clutter.

I've posted a few army list ideas in the Army list section of the site, and my first squad of veterans are underway as we speak (Type?) perhaps i too shall jump on the WIP Blog bandwagon....

Almost didn't get a chance to update tonight! Time flies when you're working your arse off on the P&M
Anyway, I finished my 3rd Veteran - A Heavy Bolter wielding Roidmonkey. Because no Spec Ops team is complete without said guy
CadianXV suggested to me that I sculpt some rolled up sleeves, because a juice junkie touting around a Heavy Bolter isn't badass until he's rolled up his sleeves. Then you know he's talking all business
Used the Scout HB arms for it, which explains why they didn't quite come out perfect. Turns out Scout torsos are -substantially- wider. I didn't know this until I went to try and fit it all together. Still lots of cleanup to do, and I can't really remove any excess GS until the stuff on his right arm dries because it's just waaay too finicky being all outstretched like that. So he looks like complete rubbish right now, but I'm confident he'll be just as badass as the last two once he's actually got paint on him. Anyway, here he is:
Now, I had some custom Planetary Empires tiles in the works that I made with leftover WHFB bases from all the Daemon filth now tainting my good Imperial Shelves (Kidding babe, they look great. Even if they should be purged. )
Weeeell, I decided I'd paint them up and then see if I liked it. The tiles are themed after the Capital World in the system - The upper hemisphere of it to be specific. Up there, it's all stone, dust, and black sand like the stuff that covered Istvaan V. The Southern Hemisphere is more of a jungle/swamp environment, but doesn't play as large a role in the fluff, so It'll wait (That, and I have no freaking idea how I'm going to sculpt jungle trees that small ). Anyway, here're the first 6 demo tiles. I'll be adding some city tiles once I find and pick up Plasticard for making minute skyscrapers and buildings.
And then a few closeups of some of my favorites:
Coastal Tile:
Mountain Tile:
And the Battlefield Tile:
Tomorrow I'll post the second Heavy Bolter that I finished basing, but it's 22:30 as of this post, and I don't feel like snapping more photos when my bed looks so comfy... mmm... sleeping...
lasgunpacker wrote:I love the tiles. You should do a hive next, that would look great!
Are they going to be large enough to hold control markers though?
Will do! The planet only has one hive, the rest are more 21st-Century style cities, but I'll make you a Hive when I pick up some plasticard this weekend if Home Depot or Lowes has any.
I'm thinking I'll just cut little circular counters out for control/contest markers. They're the standard 25mm Fantasy bases, so they're large enough for some means of counter anyway
Automatically Appended Next Post: Hey, water's temporarily shut off for about an hour, so I can't work atm. I did get my roid-monkey with the HB done though. I'll edit my shots into this post once I finish some more crap. In the meantime, be amused by this picture of my drunk buddy eating a Watermellon:
And the improved version, which features a CREEEEEEEEED joke:
Relevant? No. Good for a chuckle while waiting for an update? Yes.

In keeping with the Vet team's habit of acquiring non-standard kit, I've given him the combo of MKII Leggings with a MKI Tunic.
I like your camo scheme, as well as the battle damage on the armour and heavy weapons. Are you going to run just a single sentinal or are there plans for a whole sqaud? If I had anything to request it would be MORE TANKS! Keep up the good work

Thanks for the compliments He's just the test scheme for future Sentinels. He'll be in a Squad
More tanks? I can do that! Anything in particular?
I saw that the new setup can change turrets easily without magnets.. same for the sponsons as well. I was a bit dissapointed, because i have just finished converting my Punisher and if i knew the parts were easily interchangeable.. i would have put the money down for the new set.
oh well...
I suggest a Valkyrie also..
i really like your terrain and fluff behind everything. makes me want to make my own and post a nice blog like your own.
Some good stuff here. For the urban dust I'd suggest you do what I did and get some black and grey charcoal sticks and crush them like the heretical scum they are and use the resultant dust for basing it seals well with PVA. Also a variety of pastels can give you a mixed effect. The only thing to bear in mind is that you have to seal the mix. I use heavily watered down PVA with a tiny amount of washing up liquid and a syringe to apply it to the model. Hope that helps!
twomas rox wrote:Leman Russ of course... all of them!

Alright, so we've got 1 for a new Russ or two. Do the new ones come with the extra turrets? I just wish they offered accessories again. Still makes me really mad. But I need some more Russes anyway. A Valk would be great - I'll probably do one up after I finish my Vets and add a bit more to my ground game. Plus, a Valk gives me the chance to do up more Guardsmen in the Ariminium Air Corps uniforms to show some diversity
Thanks for the compliments Either this weekend or when I get home, I'll post up some world maps and a big solid fluff post
Now, if I can just find an IG painter program like the SM painter on B&C, I can show off the uniforms of the system's forces
Yeah, i think the new kit comes with most of the turrets.. like the punisher, executioner, battle tank.. and i am not sure what else. Plus the plasma sponsons... i really want those.
HalloweenBomber wrote:Great work!
But maybe add some side sponsons/turrets with less powerful weapons than that huge cannon onto that turret. Keep it up with the army!
Thanks for the suggestion It's clearly nowhere near done, but I'll be turning it into a mountaintop gun, so there'll be some nice big slopes that I can add trenches, open air decks, bunkers, catwalks, and smaller turrets to. Gonna be slow going on that thing, but it'll be ma-freakin-jestic when it's finished
Modelled. I just use the barb on the creasing tool in my GF9 sculpting set to pull away some of the plastic. Depending on how deep I want the cracks, I might go over them multiple times. Really easy effect to do
I continue to really dig your work. I'm particularly envious of your camo-painting abilities. I'd love to do some on my guardsmen, but I've had zero luck painting camo so far. I can't wait to see more of your vehicles - I'll be painting my first Russ in the near future, so I'll probably wait until I see your next one before I get started. Hope you don't mind if I blatantly rip off your ideas!
!
Thanks for the comments so far I've been too busy getting drunk, building my GF's Chaos Marines, and yea generally being an hole to actually contribute anything, but I'll get on it soon. Like I said, this week and next are both 4 day weekends for me, so there's tonnes of time for many delicious updates. And watermelon.
I was thinking your recon squad was missing one guy: it needs a soldier kneeling and placing a charge for a door breach, like holding the charge straight up and down in front of him, maybe typing in a time. I'm loving the masks and all the other conversions as well.

Good idea! I have a spare Large base sitting around - Maybe I'll model him blowing the door off a submerged bunker hidden in some rubble

Thanks Foamcore Can pick it up at most Hardware and Craft stores
No go the Ariminium 51st and the Masali 1st! We fight for the emperor! Arragh!!!! Nice army though. am thinking about collecting daemons. A game against regal axes d-hunters would own you though
HalloweenBomber wrote:No go the Ariminium 51st and the Masali 1st! We fight for the emperor! Arragh!!!! Nice army though. am thinking about collecting daemons. A game against regal axes d-hunters would own you though
Thanks! You should - daemons are really fun to paint
I've been doing guard for like 5 years now and this blog has made me continue after I read it as it is really fun and funny, plus it shows that guard have so much room for conversions. (Which mine are in need of) The demons are awesome though read through that blog aswell but everything is just wow really!
Sure. Considering I've only got the massed rank and file left to churn out, it'll be a while before any more vets or anything show up for my Guard. I may have to fill the void with some current army pics, and some *yawn* spehss mehreens.
Very nice army of imperial guard you have there. I have been doing some of my own for some time now, but im not even remotely close to having as many of you ready.
I bet your army once its all laid out fighting an opponent looks great. One of the things that drew me in to the Imperial Guard is the fact that you can just worry your opponent with masses of cheap cannon fodder.
Thanks - Only thing I can recommend is batch painting. It's the only way I hammered out these guys without losing my mind
The problem with cheap fodder is as stated above. Painting it will drive you mad. That's why I do lots of conversions - makes it feel less 'cut & paste'.
I think it was an army overview. I don't have a General - I have a Colonel, who's up on page 1 (with the P. fist). I should update his shot though - all my officers now have rank markings painted on their right breastplate.
I will likely be making an Admiral, if only for fluffiness, and a General will probably be added as well. Again, just for fluffy games and whatnot where a chief of command might be present at a facility.
I will say, the Emperor does have some pretty good rewards. Working for Slannesh was a... ehhh well lets just say Daemons have it off alot better then mortals.
Now an admiral.. thats asking for some serious conversion work.
I was planning on giving my main command a personalised chimera with all sorts of gubbins on it that made it stand out, but your idea for an admiral.... now that would work with my Valkyrie heavy force (love the models). Maybe have to change my thoughts to a heavily modified\converted Valkyrie for my commander... :S

I still have the Cadian Command legs with the trenchcoat, as well as one of the unarmoured torsos. I'll probably use that for his core body and then just G.S. the tits out of him. That's the most effective way I can think of for making an admiral.
Tyyr wrote:Depends, is it a base or a diorama? Personally I think it's got plenty going on as is.
Thanks. I'm not really sure how much people want going on with the bases, as my previous Black Templars army was just green-flocked. The step up to detailed bases is sort of a new thing for me, so I'm trying to find that good balance between too little and too much. Having some outside opinions on the matter helps a lot .
Sorry I haven't been updating. Between holding an ice pack to my swollen jaw all day thanks to my wisdom teeth coming out, and the lack of anything more than rank & file Guardsmen thanks to my needing another Cadian Command box for more cool gubbins, I haven't had much to put up. I did finish a sniper scout that I got about 2 months ago. There were 4 more with him, but unfortunately they kind of... got... stepped on... in the dark... in the garage. But this one survived! Okay, so it isn't exactly Imperial Guard. It's still Imperial. And something to break the silence.
So, here're some Front and Back shots showing off the colour scheme for my Scouts:
I also did sculpt a 90 River bend and a City Ruins tile for P.E. which ended up using the last of the lady's excess WHFB bases... Guess I'll be buying a bag once I'm off the T3's and thus legally able to drive again

To me it's a question of whether or not it's going to be practical. If you're going to be plopping the Sentinel down on a game board on a regular basis an incredibly elaborate base is just not very practical to me. It's just more stuff to break and to me it starts to look weird if you've got, for instance, an incredibly elaborate urban battlefield base and the Sentinel is tromping through a forest. I prefer simple, attractive bases that don't get too complex. Let the model shine and don't pigeonhole it too much into one specific kind of terrain where it will look natural but making it look bizarre in any other.
Makes sense. Thanks again The tips are really helping me gauge between too much and too little.
To all: I'll be getting some shots of the two new PE tiles later on once my camera battery is recharged
EDIT: Okay, the last of my P.E. tiles (so far): City Ruins and a 90 River Bend. Going to need to go back to the FLGS and buy a bag of 25mm GF9 Square Bases so I can keep doing this. It's freaking addictive!
City Ruins:
River 90:
And all tiles to-date:
That's it for now. I can't drive on T3's, so my creative side is being constrained due to lack of materials, but it gives me a chance to wade through the mass of grey death that I still have to assemble and paint
Sorry folks. Not really any updates this weekend. I've got to take care of my buddy's new kitten for a week until he gets moved into his place. Sadly, it leaves little time for P&M. I might be able to snap some shots of the Land Raider and Rhino WIPs I'm working on for my SM, but I haven't got much in terms of Guard shenanigans.
I love the tile idea, so much I'm probably going to try a few myself. Much cheaper than the GW alternative and it will allow my friends and I to run a small campaign perhaps.
Still no Guard updates, but I did finish off the Land Raider I got a while back, so I'll put that up. Mark that down as one less item in the pile of "Grey Doom". So, here is the Land Raider commanded by Sergeant Tertius, minus mud/dust:
And just because I can, here's the Kitten that's been stealing away my P&M time:
My buddy named him "Zack Wylde" after the guitarist
Got 2 more tiles done last night - another Battlefield tile and a River Delta tile. Also finished a Mountain Range (25X50) tile and I'm working on doing the layering for another Ruined City tile and a standard City tile. No plasticard means it's slow going though, as I have to pancake sections of the buildings and then cut them to shape once dry. Still, should have those two done by either tonight or tomorrow evening
Lol at JD's comment. I really like what you've done with him though, and the fluff was pretty good. The Chimera looks good, as do the commisars and city ruins. Dust up that land raider boy!

Thanks. I'll get to posting more fluffy-goodness soon. I can't dust up the land raider until it sees battle though. No sense adding battle damage or dirt if it hasn't been on a battlefield yet

Nice looking captains mate. One criticism is the flesh looks a little yellowish, although that could be the lighting. Maybe could do with a wash. Great work on the tiles too, I'm tempted to give it a bash.

They have been washed. It's just a crappy picture. I'll take better individual shots as promised. Thanks though And the tiles are a blast to make. I'd definately advise giving it a go
Owain wrote:The tiles have got me inspired to do my own; I've got a load of WHFB bases from my Empire-Veteran conversions.
I'd love to see em'. GW sells bags of assorted-size Fantasy Bases, and they're only like 12 or 15 bucks a bag. Pair that with the huge tubes of Greenstuff you get from GF9 and you can do a lot more than the stock PE tiles, and with way less money!
After I'm done making maps of the 3 worlds in my system, I might do a Daemon world
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here're some Individual shots. Unfortunately, even after 2 washes of DM, Bronzed Flesh still seems to enjoy looking yellow I'll post some of the fluff I've written for each Captain when I have a bit more time
Nice painting. The captains are sweet, would you reckomend getting the chapter masters box just to pain them? Im addicted to painting atm cos of school. (no time to battle )
Absolutely. They're a pain to assemble (adding a little GS to the sockets will help you immensely there.) but the painting is really rewarding. I still have one to go, but the socket for his head was formed really wierd, and his head turns waaaaay to far to his left unless you do some shaving of the pewter.
I also had to trim their necks down a lot, as they all had an odd case of "Giraffe neck", but that was fairly simple (Again though, annoying. Damn I Fking hate Pewter.)
But once you finish the assembly nightmare, the painting is really just great. If they had another box with different sculpts, I'd pick it up and go through all the cursing and anger of assembly just to paint them again. That's how enjoyable they are to paint.
I Threadnecro my own stuff. My Mom says I'm cool. Etc, etc, etc...
Anyway, hopefully this will get the attention of those too lazy to comment:
Being that the old lady is going back home to FSJ for Christmas, she gave me my present early (and vice versa). The gift? Elysians. Straight from FW.
Pics will adorn this thread tomorrow when I'm less hammered (mmm, Rum). Paint scheme suggestions are welcome. If you can include an image of your suggested scheme, let me know
Oh, awesome! That's a good present. I hope my wife is half so thoughtful.
I can't wait to see your Elysians, man. Sorry I'm feckless when it comes to commenting. It's just that I generally try not to talk unless I have something worthwhile to contribute, and that's so rare in my case.

Look at this thread. See the barren lack of comments (aside from my own)? Anything is a worthwhile contribution. "I FKING LOVE BATTLEFIELD 2!" would be a worthwhile post at this point
But if you have a Camo/Uniform idea for them, I'd love to hear it. I want to make these Elysians something everyone will love
Just a suggestion for the yellow flesh... try thinned down or drybrushed Bleached Bone to make them paler, then build the skin colour back with washes.
I'm loving the rest of them, especially the one with the hammer.
Well, for what it's worth, for my old Warzone guys I painted my drop troops with a sort of sky blue fatigues and white body armor, streaked with a similar sky blue and very light gray for a sort of tiger-striped camo look. I'm not a great painter, so it didn't come out all that well, but having seen it on models I still feel like the idea was sound. I wish there was an IG painter like the marine painters on Bolter and Chainsword, so I could try and mock it up to show you.
Owain - Thanks for the tip . I'll definately go back and readress the baldies with that once my grey death is gone. I might use my Elf Flesh instead of Bleached Bone though
Dys - It felt longer. There was a void in my soul created by the silence
I don't have IA: Taros, I'm afraid. What was the scheme they used, if you have a pic?
Shane - I know what you mean about a painter. I started a thread asking that exact question, but nobody seems to have found/made an IG painter yet.
Again, can you get a pic of your troops for me to look at?
The first problem with an IG painter program is which regiment do you choose to base it on? After all, there've been models released for Attilans, Cadians, Catachans, Death Korps of Krieg, Elysians, Mordians, Praetorians, Steel Legion, Tallarn and Valhallans - and that's ignoring various Storm Troopers, Ratlings and Ogryns.....
The scheme they used is below, though I note it is from a painting, rather than a painted model:
Well, this may be a little late, but I have seen a cool thread that converts IG into WWI style British soldiers. All you need is your cadians, some Empire Handgunners, and Gas masks.
Dysartes: I wouldn't complain no matter which miniatures it was based on. Anything would be a start.
Metallifan: Those drop troops I mentioned have gone the way of the dodo. Or the way the dodo would have, if I had decided I was never going to use it again and threw it away. My guardsmen, however, I will post pictures of. One day. Once I have one of them painted.
I might have just delayed that further by changing my mind on the color scheme.
Shane - I'd love to see a finished pic of one... Someday... When you've finished one of them...
Zack - Once my plastic mountain (okay, it's more like a sprue hill) is cleared out and done, the gun and cathedral will be getting more work done on them
So, I've finished washing/cleaning the Elysians and I'm just letting them dry before assembly/painting. As I haven't gotten much for suggestions (because that comment button is just SO hard to find...) I did some digging. I was thinking about doing them in the uniform of Canadians in the Bosnian conflict during the early 90's:
Don't you point that finger my way, I gave you my two cents!
Seriously, though, I think that scheme looks good. There's not a lot of contrast though, so I'm not sure how well it will translate to a guardsman. I had to drop my first idea for a paint scheme for that reason, the first step in my continued non-painting of my guard army.
I said I didn't get much for suggestions, not that I didn't get any Thanks for yours though
The contrast is something I thought about too, and I figure that if I did their shoulders black with Catachan Green trim, as well as some bits and pieces of their armour in the same fashion it might help.
I am a big fan of keeping them dark , I find that the drop troops would do a lot of night drops more like specc ops . I would go with an all black theme maybe do a black and grey tiger stipe patteren , and they would fall in line with the rest of your forces while still standing out .
I second the dark pattern, with grey or perhaps even violently coloured tiger-stripe camouflage. You want these guys to look fierce, confident and fast.
The Elysians came out of their bath of Lemon-scented Dawn and Hot Water yesterday, and took a good scrubbing with a brush:
And I assembled a tester. If you have photoshop, feel free to tweak this image and repost it here with your colour scheme
And this is the uniform of the Ariminium Naval Air Corps. Pilots, Crews and Infantry attached to the Naval Air Corps wear these uniforms:
(Ignore the mold lines - he's just a tester) I might go with this for my Elysians, minus the blue helmets. I'll likely paint theirs black or green. I'll likely do up a Platoon or two of Air Corps troops once I get a Valk flying.
Again, here's the referance pic I based him off of. Courtesy of forces.gc.ca
I think you should make some fluff for this army before going further. This is just me, but I tend to be better able to think about my regiment after I think of its founding area. If these guys come from an Ice world, then do alot of blues, greys, blacks, and whites.
I would suggest you take a look at photos of pilots from WW1-2 and pilots today. Take the personalization of their uniforms/planes adn use that for this regiment.
If you could do that sort of dark, blue-black metallic that you see in some old helmets it might be awesome. I have no idea how you'd achieve that look with paint, though.

I have fluff. God-Emperor help me, I have fluff.
Hell, it's the whole reason I started this army and gave them a similar scheme to my Marines. I've got fluff for about 6 different Regiments and 3 special branches - the ANAC being one of them - I just changed the paint scheme to the one featured here after I ran the test on the above mini.
But yea, if you want fluff/uniforms/regiment or branch names for any of the system's forces, just ask
Shane wrote:If you could do that sort of dark, blue-black metallic that you see in some old helmets it might be awesome. I have no idea how you'd achieve that look with paint, though.
Black basecoat, drybrush a mix of 50/50 Boltgun Metal/watered down Shadow Grey, then give the whole helmet a wash of Asurman Blue or a wash of extremely watered down Midnight Blue
It's sort of a mix. I've been painting long enough to know exactly how to get something to look the way I want. It's not hard - you just have to be willing to screw up lots in the process to get there.
To all waiting for Elysian pics: I'll probably start them this weekend, instead of weeknights. They (weeknights) leave me feeling so rushed with only four hours of painting time before I call it a night :(
Dystartes wrote:Four hours is a rush? That's about the longest session I put together in a week, usually on a Sunday
I've got to say that the pose for that Elysian confuses me - is he looking to see what he's just trodden in?
For Forgeworld, anything less than 6 hours per model is rushed
For some reason, they made the legs in a terribly stupid sculpt. The only place it would actually look normal is if I had him sitting in the side door of a Valk, leaning one leg over the edge. But I lack a Valk, so I made him sort of duck (albeight badly)
Shane wrote:It looked to me like he might be leaning into a forward roll, or maybe ducking as he runs toward cover under heavy fire.
Heh, I was going for the latter
Tim the Biovore wrote:Well, It looks really nice. There, I commented, Happy?

Thanks, I tried to make those legs work somehow. If you have a camo/uniform to suggest, lemmie know.
I dont have a picture but for the armour perhaps a german pea dot colour scheme, the ones the shutzeshtaffel "SS" used. For the fatigues Just the ones in the picture.
Yes I agree that the veteran sergeant is badass. I think that the infantry look better with fully enclosed helmets, but that's just me.
For your drop troops, I would do the same pattern as your main army, but with weapons that look more the part of drop troops, such as lasguns with wired stocks and man-portable anti-tank weapons. They need more ammo than most troops, so have a bunch of las ammo strapped to their bodies somewhere.
I'd be tempted to go with Black Imperial Tie Fighter style uniforms. Another option would be to go with the same way your planning to paint your naval forces.
Hey guys - Pics and some fluff will be added come this weekend. I've been rocking out MW2 (Steam username is Bungd-up Email is St_anger_253@hotmail.com) Not much in terms of new and exciting - just finishing the last few stock troopers & Vox operators. I did get to building an Artillery Officer/MoO (Or more accurately, gave him a cool mask with a 'T' visor) but I'll showcase some stuff.
In addition, I'd like to give mad props to GaleForce9 for yet another outstanding product line - Battlefield in a Box terrain.
This stuff is beautiful. It comes prebuilt and prepainted (And flocked in the case of their hills/mountains) and the detail on them is just great. Their 'Gothic Ruin - Corner' cost about $4 CAD more than a GW ruin piece, but considering it's bigger, comes built & painted, and has the same - if not slightly better - level of detail, I consider that more than fair. I would highly advise snatching this stuff up whenever and wherever you see it. I'll add some shots of the ruin and the column set I got too
Alright, sorry for the long break - here're some shots of the awesome Battlefield in a Box stuff from GaleForce9
The Gothic Ruins - Corner piece:
And the Ruined Columns set:
Next, my Master of Ordinance. The Rank Insignia on his Chest denotes a Lieutenant (Been adding these to my Officers as of late for a little extra depth) I might put the Lasgun on his back and have him holding a Pistol instead.
And this is a Comms Relay I built from an Auspex and spare tank bitz This will serve as an Objective and, occasionally, probably share a large base with my MoO and make him look more 'Master-y'
It's the photos working hell on the tones. I don't have a daylight bulb so even post-wash, the skintones tend to come out yellow because of the standard bulb
Oh, I see now. I seriously thought you had painted yellow gloves on him for a minute there. I like the comm relay, I may have to do something similar. I have an awful lot of sprue pieces laying around, so maybe a little tower might get constructed...
I like the MoO!! However i would advise against puting them together on a large base for gaming reasons...
P.S. That terrain is positively beautiful...
Not a bad deal for pre-made terrain, but they look like they just cast stuff made from Hirst Arts molds and paint them. Of course, if you are like me, you have PLENTY on the painting table so I am sure that the premade stuff helps immensely.
Thanks mate I haven't been doing much on them recently - I went from MW2 to Two Worlds and it has sidetracked me with no effort. But I am slowly getting off my arse. Finished another Vox Caster for one of my incomplete squads and I have another one, plus 4 stock primed Guardsmen still to do up. And then the last 6 or so still on the sprue. So... Slowly getting finished. And then I think it's time to add another Lemon Rust
Damn fine army there. For a non-display army you've definitely done some awesome painting and conversion work. Awesome scenerey too. And your video made me lol and WTF in equal measures you should check out my army (not nearly as awesome but I think its pretty good) the link is at the bottom of my signature
I like em. They look like the scheme for the oldschool Necrons
I used to have a few. They were black with Ice Blue trim and metal gibbinz (Knees, Wrists, Spines and the like) And then the black was glossed over to give it a sort of Ceramic look. But I couldn't stand them long. Painting Necrons was maddening I dunno how you do it.
easy, spray paint em all black, then lightly brush over them with silver to leave the recessed areas black(almost a drybrush but not quite that dry). Then a spot of gold for the chest glyphs, two spots of green for the eyes, more green for the stomach cables and gun parts, then silver for the bayonet. Done. (Destroyers on the other hand are a pain in the arse to paint because of all the gold trim and whatnot)
Death By Monkeys wrote:Huh. Somehow I missed the 1/3 update. How'd you do the facemask on your Master of Ordnance - GS? That's a pretty keen mask. Very Boba Fett.
Yep. GS and a lot of cursing trying to get it to keep shape . I actually did that mask on one of Shadowbrand's Vets when he was in town, and decided it looked cool. So I stole my own idea
And yea, I was like "There. All done... Aww damnit! Someone's going to make a Fett referance now."
Okay guys, I'm down to the last few guardsmen off the sprue. What would Dakka like to see next? Russ? Bassie? More Sentinels? Going to pick something up with the $88 Tax Incentive that the BC Gov't kindly dropped in my mailbox last week. Take THAT Gordon Campbell!

lol yeah ironically enough the tanks that would fit best with Metallifan's army would be the Rhino (M113) and Predator (Bradley/Warrior IFV). And I suppose the rather BMP-esque Chimera/Hellhound

I always thought the Baneblade looked more like the super-heavy Maus tank the Germans came up with during WWII, only with SPONSON GUNS
I think the Stormsword/Shadowsword/whatever combination of the words Storm, Shadow, Sword, and Lord you can come up with super heavies were more Leopard-like
Well, I went with a Russ... Well, Okay... Not one.... More like.. uhh.. ...three. BUT IT WAS $110 CAD FOR THE SQUADRON AND $50 FOR A SINGLE! Who could say no to a free Russ? And especially since it's the -old- squadron box. So it still has the accessories sprues!
And I picked up another Battlefield in a Box set. 5 Wall sections that perfectly match the Ruined Corner.
AND, I found a store here that sells sheets of plasticard, including Textured stuff. Oh, happy day!
Pics will follow when I stop freely tting my pants with joy

S'okay. Once we have more daylight and it's actually above 'cold suck' here, I'll take some outdoor shots. But yea. It's just Bronzed Flesh with Devlan Mud. If you've seen that combo you can imagine what it -actually- looks like
EDIT: Also finished 2 of 3 priming coats on my Russes tonight. Likely have some shots of the bestial beauties tomorrow
Progress on the tank squadron has been slow. I've been getting sidetracked by terrain projects (Oh how I love thee )
I did get the Russes all primed though, and I've just begun putting paint on the command tank. Here they are at the moment:
And here's some of the terrain I've been working on:
An Urban themed Crater that I slapped together.
A large Chemical/Promethium storage tank. Note the red triangular Hazard sign on the bottom left corner. There's another one painted next to the filler hatch on the top.
A ruined armoury that's been sitting unpainted for the longest time. I can see where I got some DA Green on the floor near the ammo crate. Might clean it tomorrow. Not a huge priority ATM.
And then a shot of all the Urban terrain in my collection. That big processing plant in the bottom corner is also new. Forgot to get pics
Corvus: You've got the right idea. The terrain is themed around the siege of the system's capital, Patavium. The city has the population of a large Hive, but due to a relatively lower atmospheric ceiling, and the costs and dangers associated with building a Hive spire through the atmosphere, it's laid out like your typical 21st century urban centre.
Imagine 2 or 3 times the population of China all living in a North-American style city. The city is so large that even if it's under attack, most people on the oppposite end of it wouldn't be aware in the slightest without the broadcast system. It was a really fun bit of fluff to work on, and I felt that the siege was thus where I should focus, seeing how I enjoyed that the most.
Cadian: Heh, yea I made those because I didn't have enough bits to make another legal squad
There's a few marines that suffered the same fate
I've beat ME2. Assuming I don't get snagged up by the prospect of exploring the other options for the game, I'll have some Russ pics soon. My Command tank is about 50% done (Thank you simple black hull paintjob!) so that should be up here anytime.
Lol awesome backstory for your army and city. I can't really do much fluffing for my army. I mean what's to fluff? They're Necrons. They do what all Necrons do, sleep until the AdMech blunders in and wakes them up, then they quietly go around killing everything
metallifan wrote:Corvus, you should repaint your Necrons to look like Geth
Sorry, been playing too much ME2 lately
hahaha but they don't even look like Geth in terms of body style I hear you tho, ME2 is insanely awesome. I pretty much spent all day Sunday in my dorm playing it. (In my defense, the entire base was covered in ice and snow, so its not like I could have done anything else )

Give em' some Geth heads with GS and smooth the chests?
Damnit. I may have to start a small 500pt Necron Army just to do that
And snow and ice mean nothing! You still could've gone on a forced march.
We did that plenty during our BMQ. First time was... eventful. Granted, we were wearing our PT gear, and running shoes just don't grip like combat boots. Fully half the platoon slipped and busted noses, wrists, and elbows going down a hill, but they made us finish the run because we were already 2K in, and everyone's legs were still fine.
Also: Command Russ done. Need to take pics once I get home.
yeah, for whatever reason the Air Force isn't big on forced marches (with some exceptions), and my base is in a place where it doesn't snow a lot, so when it does, everyone freaks out
I did take some shots of the finished Command Russ, but they looked awful. I'll have to get a few more soon too. Been on a break from painting for the last month or so thanks to Mass Effect 2. I guess I can get started any time now that I've beat it though...
Okay, mostly to satisfy Corvus so that he'll stop drooling on his keyboard in anticipation (Yes, that's right, I'm watching you ) here are a couple shots of the Command Russ that I -just- shot. Seriously, my devotion to painting has been pretty hurtin' lately, what with no one to really paint/play against. *BIG SIGH* Man I wish this city had a bigger hobby base.
You know how people say "The picture screwed up the light a bit"?
Well the light is actually WORSE in reality It's a standard bulb, it's new, but it's like a dark freaking orange light. Seriously, just the worst P.O.S. ever. Ahh well. The light is the least of my concerns I guess.
metallifan wrote:Corvus, I -just- noticed that isn't your AK in that avatar. Are you holding a Fking Dragunov SVD now?
Seriously, you sir, are a jealousy-inspiring donkey-cave
yeah got a new avatar lol. And sadly it aint a true Russian SVD (those -ers cost around 4K in the US these days and they're rare as hell on top of it) what I have is a Romanian PSL, which is their version of the Dragunov. There are some slight differences, and the rifle is stamped steel instead of the superior milled steel of the Russian guns, and it uses an AK-style gas piston instead of the short-stroke piston used in the SVD. Its still a great (and affordable for an E-3) rifle, performs similar to an SVD or Nagant when fed the right ammo. And yes, BE JEALOUS
pic related (generic photo, not mine, but better view of the details)

Oh yea there Eh?
I say we all sit around in an igloo and eat poutine, drink Tennesse Whiskey, and watch a special one-time-only NASCAR race where the normal drivers are replaced by Hockey Players. Then, we can all go out Curling while shooting assault rifles in the air and punting a beaver. Finally, we'll wrap things up by playing a game of "FOOTBALL!" dressed as Mounties.
Sounds like a plan to me

joking aside, i'm impressed with what you've done thus far, so much so that i've recently ordered some more models for my own IG force.
Excellent, excellent.
You know, it's made even better by the fact that "Horse" and "Force" rhyme

Look at my force, my Force is amazing! Give it a lick!
metallifan wrote: Tank Commander for my Chimera Formation. I use him in games involving the "Disembark Crew" Houserule (Tank Crews can abandon their vehicles if they become immobilized or all weapons are destroyed). The guy behind him is a crewman with a welding torch (Counts as CCW)
I miss when Escape Hatches(not the real name I think, allowed D3 Crewmen to escape a destroyed tank and held on to some VPs from the tank)) existed as actual upgrades. Still have 6 of the crew models released for it.
I'm still halfway through Russ #2. I also got more tiles done (Chaos Tile, Imperial Outpost, Coastal #5 and Ruined City #2)
Mostly though I've been helping the woman with her Chaos Marines so she can get up to speed and play a few proper games. I painted her Daemon Prince for her and I'm also painting her a winged Lord (Counts as Jump pack) so she has some HQ options. Made him from bits out of the Battleforce I bought her. I'll have some pics of the two up tonight if everyone wants em'
I erm... Forgot to take the pics (Stupid Sims and ME2 DLC! And damn my short attention span! )
But I won't forget tonight. I promise. I promise like a politician. They're ALWAYS honest.
EDITATION!:
The pics I kinda forgot last night. I'll start with binky's stuff, so she can add it to her own blog if she wants.
To start things off, here's her Daemon Prince that I ended up buying and painting as a Christmas present. ...He was just finished this month
And her WIP Lord. The Combat shield was made by cutting the spikes off of the Chaos Undivided banner symbol and gluing it to his wristguard. The wings are from a backpack on the Chaos Mutations sprue
And some more PE tiles.
Coastal
Imperial Outpost (Yes, that is a wee little Aquilia painted on the landing pad )
Another Ruined City tile
Mountain Tile 3
And a nice, evil Chaos tile
Finally, the progress thusfar on Russ #2
There ya go Dakka. I'm slowly getting back into things, so bear with me. I do have an entire Chaos Battleforce that I'm apparently -going- to help with (I don't even get a choice! Damn women!), but I'll get around to my own goods again.
Not really. As Guard regiments are divided by their composition though, I might work out a Company Command Russ that's all done up with lots of bling. But the Rank and File tanks won't be too distinguished. As far as they go, I think the Squadron Command Tank that I posted earlier is about as flashy and stand-outish as they'll get.
Also, your Commissar Laura Croft avatar still makes me chuckle
Thanks a lot for the advice a while back especially the detailed PM. I took a lot of it I reckon. The new pair of Russes are nice basic Russes and the new planetary empire tiles look a lot of fun.
I like all of the new stuff but especially the tiles. I don't even know how the heck I'd ever use something like that, but they look cool.
Ever play RISK or Axis & Allies?
Something like that. You don't even need the PE rulebook. You can always come up with your own map mechanics. But if you're into story campaigns, a map is something you need to try building
And Llama, I'm glad to hear (and see) you applying the advice we all gave you. Your army is shaping up really well, and your quick paintscheme means you could build a sizable Apoc force if you desired. Keep at it, I'm loving the Non-Guard-Guardsmen
dude Metalli nice Chaos Lord and Prince. love the blue highlight on the DP's face too. The tanks are also looking good, quick question: are you gonna go back over the tracks on them with a mud/dirt/rusty wash or something to weather them at all? They would look great with that.
Yep. But my painting policy on dirt and battle damage is as follows:
Until the vehicle actually -sees- a battlefield, there shall be no dirt, damage, or kill-tallies upon it. Rust, scratching, and some natural hull wear is, however, acceptable.
Basically, if the tank has never seen battle, it won't be dirty. Adds a sense of story and helps me also see which tanks need a good fight or two under their belt. For my Guard, that's... well... All of them They get two washes - one in Mud and one in Black on the treads and just Devlan Mud on other metallic surfaces, but other than that the treads are clean until they chew up a battlefield.
Love the models, clean and simple style, but I'm really really taken with the use of square bases as campaign tiles, I wish I'd thought of that a long long time ago! Keep up the good work!
Thanks guys. I haven't left this blog to rot. Truth be told, I've actually just been going balls-to-the-wall working on finishing my Second Company project with my SM. I've got 10 assault marines, 1 & 1/2 tactical squads, 1 & 1/2 10-man Devastator squads, a Command Squad and a Dreadnaught left and 2Co will be done.
Yep. Rome Total War is my only true love as far as RTS games go. How'd you guess?
I also did a lot of unit name swaps when doing my own codex for em (Which was really more me just changing names in the SM 'dex ) For example, my Scouts were renamed Hastati, my marines were called "Legionaries", while my Vet company was called the "Legionary 1st Cohort", which was a very famous and reverred part of the Roman Army. The Capital city on the principle world of the System is "Patavium", there's a port city called "Segestica", I'm sure you've got where I'm going on this
Yeah i get you. Can't blame yo for using those names, some of them sound neo-gothic and fit in well with the 40k theme.
Automatically Appended Next Post: And I used to enjoy a spot of RTW before Norton Antivirus Stepped In. Anyway, I digress. Great miniatures, especially the scouts.
Found a box of em at my FLGS. They stock a random assortment of non-mainstream minis, Aberrant being one of the brands.
And no, sadly no Rome 2 yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. They wouldn't have to change much either - Update the graphics, add all the new gameplay features, and expand the map a little more (Something I just found out a year ago - Romans actually built a fort on Newfoundland but left well before the Vikings arrived, so a huge world map would be welcome). It wouldn't be much work to put out Rome 2, so I hope my wishing isn't wrongfully placed.
I'll put some up today - I bought and painted Honoured Imperium in one day, so that deserves some space. And I do have a wee bit more done on the marine side of things. As I said, I've finished purchasing and assembling the rest of the 3rd Company, sans Rhino tanks, and so there'll be a lot of work on them coming up. Then I'll likely be back to my Guard for a bit. Still got plenty of Guardsmen on spures and those two Russes to work on.
