I'd fight against the enemies of the human race in general. That would be the sensible thing to do, for me at least, not defending a half-dead guy who eats 1000 souls per day.

Um..... Orks? One warboss took on a chaos PLANET with sluggas and choppas.

He's got a very distinct point, while it goes in interesting directions that human technology doesn't in places (variants in teleportation via the warp), or technology is inferior to human. They just make up for it was biological skill.

My major issue is that... well, death is likely a worse fate than life. Torture by the Inquisition is unpleasant, by no worse than a haemonculi can do. Not having your soul consumed by a fellow eldar and merging with theirs in peaceful oblivion, but instead having it flung to the warp and the maw of She Who Thirsts? Probably one of the only situations I would consider using the crippling tools of the misguided craftworlders and implanting a soulstone. Even burnt into nothingness to fuel the Emperor is better than eternal torture at the hands of the most sadistic of the gods.

The only reason I can fathom fighting for the Emperor in the 40K universe, if I were a human, would be eternal rest and a chance to fight in the last battle.

The way i see it you dont have a choice. You either die protecting the emporer, betray humanity(not something im to fond of) and join chaos or leave the imperium and get eaten by alien freaks.

Or be the alien freaks doing the eating.

And here I was ready to fight solely because of the dental plan. It's modeled on the old British one, so you know it's good!

one way of putting it is would you fight for your country? your ideals? your religion ? for your species?

would you turn on the very things which to you have seem to have been the right thing to do

or would you turn to something else to save your skin for the time being but as the Tau codex says that the imperials who surrended and joined the tau dread the day that the imperials return for they know that they will be given no mercy and no quarter
