WOW 20,000 views!!! That’s insane!!
@ Munch Munch! : To paint the gold I start with a 1:1:1 mix of shining gold : scorched brown : chaos black. Then a highlight of pure shining gold and finishing off with a highlight of 2:1 mix of shining gold to mithryl silver. The when everything is finished I give the whole model with a wash of devlan mud.
@ WillFrost : I’ll be using the dread heads on some marines and terminators in the future.
@ Miss Dee : I paint the joints in the armour with boltgun metal then wash them with devlan mud.
@ Frogboy : no SLR I’m afraid. Just my 5MP phone camera (nokia 6700) and the macro setting on my digital camera (I only use that for really close up shots)
Thanks for the comments guys keep 'em coming!
As to what I’m doing next I’m torn between the other venerable dreadnought, the other tactical squad or the assault marines...

Nice, got a Ven. Dread at the weekend and painted it up...Its seems really small compared to the normal dread, but its just infinitely more detailed :L
Do the extra heads need any work to adjust them to fit a normal marine/termie or do they just slot in??

Post by: Llamahead
Theres a tiny detail that bugs me about the Venerable Dreadnaught, the battles etched into the Shoulder are all famous battles of the Ultramarines it looks cool and awesome and I'm being far too niggardly but it bugs me a lot. It's an utterly beautiful model at a standard I couldn't hope to emulate but that tiny thing annoys me. I guess I'm just grumpy about an obviously Ultramarine part in a standard kit. What are you day dreaming about doing with the Sanguinary Guard? Tiny bit of advice when I was revising I always found reading a chapter, paint a colour read a chapter paint a colour worked well. It got me through my GCSE's, AS, A levels and at University dragged me back into the hobby I just had to paint while revising..............

Well perhaps you can find some comfort in knowing your work as good enough to commit a misdemeanor (or felony) for... Or whatever the equivalent in British law is called. Looking atthis army togheter is awesome, though there is one thing that bugs me, you landraider looks way to dusty/muddy compared to your other minis imo, would be cooler if you were consistent about how dirty they're gonna be.
Other than that, fantastic army mate, keep it up Automatically Appended Next Post: lot's of spelling issues lol, I write to fast sry.

Post by: DarkAngelsRK
^I understand what you are saying, but I think they are fine. A Landraider would be zooming around the battlefield, throwing up dust, dirt, and mud. On top of that, it probably takes a ton of fire, because it can. It doesn't have to worry about taking cover, etc. And finally, since a Landraider is so rough and tough, it's probably "been in the field" for quite a long time. Again, I understand what you are saying, and you are entitled to an opinion, but that's the way I personally feel.

Post by: SONS of ORAR
In truth I am a bit annoyed with the landraider. I’m almost tempted to sell it and buy another. As to the Cadian stuff: I’ll take some pics of that when I have some time so I’m sorry if you have to wait a bit.
as to the librarian; when I paint single minis I get so engrossed I don't want to put them down and end up painting for days and days, so... I’ve put him in a safe, out of site place so I’m not tempted until the exams are over. single minis so time consuming so I’ve just doing a couple SoO figures for the time being, as you can paint one of the in a one or two break in the revision. I’ll probs go back to the librarian once I’ve broken up from college at the start of June.
And as to what next... I’m thinking of maybe doing a small Blood Angels army to play along with my Sons, probably a ball predator and one or two other units. Depends on how I feel. I’m currently working on a chapter master for the SoO though I haven't mentioned hem previously as I’m not yet certain how well he'll turn out. I’m converting him from a plastic terminator chaos lord. The Blood Angels addition isn't definite; it's only a concept at the moment.
I do want a predator for my SoO as I’ve never had a crack at building/paining one. I do need some more basic marines and some more heavy support so feel free to suggest things.
Cheers, SONS of ORAR

Heavy support eh? A devastator squad is a great choice for heavy support if you want some cheap firepower. They can choose a variety of weapons (for a well-rounded squad, I took 2 heavy bolters, 1 plasma cannon and a lascannon. Or, you could take a thunderfire cannon. It's fun to use, and it'll provide you with great support while your assault marines and tacs advance. Hope this helps, an once again, good job on all your minis!

I have a 6 man dev squad with a Twin linked Assault Cannoned Razorback.

I like the sound of the razorback devastators, i think i may have to try that
you get the fast movement, and extra fire power from the twin linked turret.

2 Missile launchers, 1 Las cannon and a Heavy bolter. 1 with a boltgun and a vet serg with combi plasma.
took a long time to get the assault cannons the bits and kist order was lost, no feadback from them. and a friend called Paul got me a crusader frame with the assault cannons.

You also probably sold me on picking up the Forgeworld Imperial Armour book as well.

Post by: w0chtulka
Hey.. if you run devastators and you want to have ANY success with them whatsoever take 2 or (max!!! 3 are not as good) 3 heavy weapons in 5 man squad. Dont take lascannons... they are way too expensive. Missile launchers are the best weapon to use. With razorbacks you want to go with the vanilla one or lascannon one... but for that 150+ pts you are investing into razorback+devs you can get cheaper predator equipped with 2 lascannons and a autocannon which is nearly the say (i would say better) than devs+razorback...
If i would run devastators i would take 2x missile launcher+combimelta for sarge.
But 4 heavy weapons look cool and sons of Orar look cool too so its up to you.

I apologize for nitpicking for i can only dream of painting this well. I just was going to say that i have noticed on the land Raider that you left the bottom corner of lettering still on but i wasn't sure if it was jsut an oversight but i noticed it on the first page. I’m still here!!
WOW it’s been a long time! Sorry for lack of updates over the past couple of weeks, things have been very busy recently, but the show will be back on the road by mid June and there will be more updates than ever before!!
Anyway I managed to scrape together an hour and a half this weekend so here is a small update... I had a go at a simple Sanguinary Guard conversion but simply replacing the legs, backpack and filing off the blood angels iconography.

Part way through painting. Unfortunately it was a bit of a rushed job...

As it is so far. As you can see there is quite a bit of tidying up to do...

This is a gold helmet I had a go at painting without metallic paints... i'm suprised it looks this good!
I’ll try and update again as soon as possible but no promises... it'll be some time in the next 4 weeks...
Thanks for your comments guys : D

Just to let you know, moulded roman breastplates had nipples in many cases... it does not make it gay...
Anyhow, leaving behind the nipple armour argument (hopefully permanently) I have got another update for you (much sooner than I expected I would).
The first member of Severus' honour guard is finished; and here are some pictures:

He’s come out surprisingly well for a quick and somewhat rushed job, (and no, I will not file off those nipples lol)

I spent about 20 minutes to half an hour on this axe. I’m going to do the same paintjob on the axe of my librarian for GD but obviously do a lot better job on it than on this. Though it’s nice to try it out on another model beforehand.
Just to finish off, a nice picture of my Dawn Warriors' land raider redeemer I painted about a year or so ago. It is one if not the first picture I put up on DakkaDakka all that time ago lol.
Cheers for all those constructive comments (nipple comments are not constructive )

Beautiful work SoO. I knew a girl in a medieval reenactment group once who wore a beautiful, custom made steel breast plate with (modest) breasts on it with brass nipples. She'd just wait until she caught you looking at her "chest" and ... WHAM!!! Bed time for bonzo...

Great job! You have inspired me: I went on Ebay just last night and won meself some kriffing awesome Sanguinary torsos, mate! I'm gonna' use the one you used for my Assault Sergeant. Thanks for giving us all great ideas!
And personally, I quite agree with you about the nipples. They do not in ANY WAY make it look gay, and IMO they make it look cooler because it completes the muscle feel. I AM NOT GAY AND DO NOT LIKE MALE NIPPLES! DON'T BE A HATER!

I have been following the thread for a while, love the work you are doing. Your weathering effect is something I aspire to. I'm intimidated to try and have it look terrible tho. Maybe a few rounds of test models are in order.
Also, the muscle chest piece is supposed to be a bit of functional art if I am correct. And in art, the human form is considered a very beautiful piece of aesthetic. That is why the nipples are included.

I hear what you're saying about the "nipple" sh*t thats flying around. Not constructive. But since the Blood Angles pride themselves on beauty (Cause of Sanguinius. Don't quote me on that I may be wrong) then all aspects of the male form would be considered.
But anyway, great looking modle there, I particularly like the mottled effect on his armour

Gitsplitta wrote:Oh yeah whalemusic... THAT was a constructive comment... LOL Beautiful work SoO. I knew a girl in a medieval reenactment group once who wore a beautiful, custom made steel breast plate with (modest) breasts on it with brass nipples. She'd just wait until she caught you looking at her "chest" and ... WHAM!!! Bed time for bonzo... Nipples have their uses... even on armor. And that was contructive? (Odd Reenactment if you ask me.) As some of you have been asking about the librarian I went against my self-ban from painting him till after my exams (only a week and a bit to go now) and had a crack at his face, which is now about 60% done. Here are some pics; there'll be some more shot before the end of the week hopefully.
About 20 to 30% complete (Saturday evening)
As he looks now; his left eye really needs to be tidied up as it’s a total mess at the moment as you can see :(
Cheers guys,

Still watching the thread, absolutely loving the work so far.
I'm going to be looking out for the Librarian, and yourself, at Games Day this year. If you can get as much detail into the rest of the model as you have on the face and hand, you're in for a good chance I reckon.
I'm not a fan of the wrist mounted Blood angel guns, but the torsos and close combat weapons are fantastic, and you've definitely done them justice.
Looking forward to seeing your Dreadnoughts again, especially hoping for some Latin script, the stuff on the Land Raider was excellent, you just need some real Latin to really make it perfect

I have a nice surprise for you which will be up on the blog on Thursday or Friday evening!
As to games day if you want to meet me I’ll be around all day but some time nearer the day I’ll give some precise times and places.
The librarian is going to be in the diorama/duel category fighting a renegade Ogryn with a signpost weapon

I'm sorry about the surprise guys. It’s ready now.. I had more revision to do than I thought.. Last exam on Wednesday so only a few days to go! then I can chain myself (metaphorically) to my desk and paint paint paint!
Anyway this surprise...
I’ve spent my free time for a couple of weeks converting a chaos lord into a chapter master for my Sons of Orar, I have yet to think of a name so I’m open to suggestions. All will be considered (as long as it has the correct latiny feel)
Anyway on to some pictures of him:
Front view. This model only took about 6 hours to paint! So I’m pleasantly surprised with the result
Right side
Back. The contrast is a bit over the top :S
Left side. The storm bolter lower arm is from a Grey Knight terminator. (Can’t wait till they come out in plastic!)
Close up view of the upper body. Most of the armour conversions were done using plasticard.
Close up view on the axe head which is from the sanguinary guard kit.

Fantastic. I actually like the freehand work, it's sort of 'Alice in Wonderland' sort of feel, and adds something to the model. Maybe that's not a good thing to some, but I like it. The axe head is, as usual, amazing. You have a real way with light.

I am busy finishing the school year ... It seems i creeated certain antipathy against ultramarines. Models CAN be done cool but all models can be played with and converted and painted to absolute awesomness but i find gorgeously painted, say, salamanders, being more awesome than ultramarines painted at the same level. And i dont like their fluff too: they are just too great and good. Exceptional americas heroes (blargh!).
This reminds me of army i once saw. It had Calgar, Lysander, 5 TH/ SS termies, 5 Grey knight termies, 5 Scouts with sniper rifles, 5 Tactical marines and 2 Thunderfire cannons, at 1500 pts. But the way they were painted!! It was funny and pretty at the same time. They are were shiny white with neat blacklinging and they all had american iconography on them. Flags and stuff. Calgar had USA flag as his cloak Sry for OT

sorry, constantly forget to ask, SoO do you use superglue to glue your models together? or on the painting base before you glue them to the main base?

Yeah. unless it's fiddly and annoying and flops around and stuff. oh and obviously for metal models i have tried plastic glue on them when i was small and it ended up a bit of a mess lol.. i use superglue to glue bent bits of plasticard on conversions otherwise they just spring off all over the place!

On to the pictures.
I recently got a watchmakers magnifying glass for paint super detailed single minis. I’d definitely recommend you guys get one
The second venerable dreadnought. I decided to go for a lot of white armour to contrast with some of the other minis. What do you think?
Some of the most recent marines. The flesh on the faces isn't quite finished in these pictures.

yes.. it was a 750 point game against plague marines... I forgot the mission name but it's the one where you have to capture points... the outcome was a draw... the highlights were him turning my chaplain into a chaos spawn in the turn before last which was instantly shredded by my Venerable dreadnought... I lost 1 marine and the chaplain and I flattened all but 2 of a squad of plague marines guarding an objective with the plasma cannon on the venerable dread... I killed the most stuff but by the last turn we had 2 objectives each so it was a draw as I said... but in all other respects I won

When putting on resin bases do you drill the base and set the pins in b4 priming?
18253
Post by: SONS of ORAR
I always pin after painting the model and base with the resin bases..
I have a power weapon painting tutorial now here it is:
Brushes: the top brush is GW's fine detail brush, the bottom one is my finest brush for ultra detail.
The blade is base coated black
A mix of black and hawk turquoise is layered on where the lightning effect will roughly go.
More hawk turquoise is added to the mix and applied with the fine detail brush.
Pure Hawk turquoise is then carefully layered on, some ice blue can also be added to the mix.
A mix of ice blue and hawk turquoise is added with a very fine brush.
Raw ice blue is used to patchily highlight the previous shade.
A highlight of ice blue and white is added
Add very small patches of skull white.
A blue wash is applied to dull the colour.
The lightning is carefully re-highlighted with the ice blue-white mix.
The blade is finally painted with gloss varnish to bring out the contrast and protect from wear and tear.
And there you have it. How to paint power weapons
Cheers, SoO

If I could just get step #1 to look right.... the rest would fall into place I think. Do you have a design philosophy in mind when your laying out your initial patten??
18253
Post by: SONS of ORAR
i bought the brush in a modelling store.. most hobby stores i've been to have brushes of about that size, the other good thing is they're cheaper than GW brushes.
with the basic pattern. the first one you ever do is always the hardest. i gauged my first on the terminator sergeant from the new space hulk's power sword. its really up to you.. i had a practice on an old power sword in my bitz box before trying it on my first model. the best thing is to just have a play around and find what works best for you. some people like nice flowing curvy lightning, others like to have it really jagged. the easiest thing to go is to get to crowded.. remember not all the blade has to be covered in coils of energy
good luck. let me know if you give it a try and put up some pics

And I have more GD coming along which I have previously kept hidden up till now... and here are some pics:
Vehicle Category:
The sentinel I’m working on for the vehicle category, it’s about half done at the moment. I’m working on the crew member separately
Warhammer Fantasy Single Miniature:
The Empire Warrior Priest. I only started on this one today but he's coming along quite well. The face is really gnarled (though these pictures are a bit poor and don't show it to well) So far I have painted the flesh on him and made a start on the armour.

got my bases lases cut yesterday
the bases are made out of a number of layers of laser etched perspex. the left one is for the librarian - farseer duel and the round one is for the sentinel.
a close up of the eldaresque base. its meant to look fairly craftworldy
the base was undercoated black, the sprayed with various shades of light grey and finally white. then the cracks scraped out with a scalpel.
i haven't started on the sentinel base yet.
the warrior priest. just started painting the fleur de lys on his clothing and it is so hard!! it takes about 20 to 30 mins for each one!!

I admire your ability to paint the fleur de lys on his clothing. I would fail at number one and have to start the whole piece again.

OK, my question is... "got my bases cut yesterday"....
Where and How? Those are pretty spectacular too. (I'm not mentioning the fleurs because well... that's just proof in insanity that could be used agin' you at a later date...

I'm a rather lucky person, i got a work experience placement with an architectural modelling company about 2 years ago now and they have two laser cutters which they taught me to use. when i left they said they wouldn't mind if i came back occasionally to make some bits and bobs with their perspex offcuts. so on wednesday i gave them a ring planning on calling in when they weren't very busy in a couple of weeks time but they said i could go down that afternoon so i did and hey presto! i got all the parts cut and etched in an afternoon!
I have some more sentinel pics for you to see
Starting with the base which has been painted up since the last update note the brass screws... shows the detail you can get with laser etching!
sentinel on it's base
a couple of shots of the details
offering the farseer and librarian up on the base for the duel.. i love how this is looking even at this early stage!
Quick note: i'm away now for 2 weeks in scotland from tomorrow... leaving in about 4 hours time (certain family members think 4:30 to 5:00 is a good time to leave) so i get about 3 hours sleep... So the lack of updates over the next 16 days will be because of that, not me being violently killed in a freak accident... though that may happen.. who knows? lol
Look forward to your replies when i get back!
Cheers SoO

Wow, some seriously nice work man. Your weathering technique is far and away above most wargaming models. I'm also very jealous of your laser-cut bases! I do have one question; with your Land Raider, did you deliberately mean to do yourself out of having the side exit hatches for gaming purposes?

I'm going to say, I completely ripped off the weathering wash technique you used for your Marines for my first truescale (although mine was a custom mix, I don't buy GW paint outside of metallics), and I love it completely. It adds so much personality to the model.

Man, your treatment of the inside of those buildings (especially) is really phenomenal. The "negative image" on the farseer's cloak is really outstanding, and a technique I almost never see in the hobby. As stated before... the fleurs are insane... and probably can (will) be used against you in a court of law at some point.
Wow... very inspirational stuff.

Those CoD are some of the best i've seen, really bring out the grimdark, well done! That farseer is also win, is that OSL from the blade or is it just the lighting? Freehand as always is epic, well done!

I've just looked through the entire log, and all I can say is that I'm very, very, very impressed. Awesome work!
I feel compelled to steal some of your ideas, especially the farseer's cloak.

Hi all, The Farseer is nearing completion now after a good painting session yesterday.
@ Alpharius : we have one in our garden so i'll try and get a pic of it when the rain stops
The cloth and cloak are not finished yet on the inside and the Eldar script will need tidying up a bit. I also think the faceplate will need to be darkened a bit to contrast with the eyes and rest of the helmet.
The hem of the cloak will need to be tidied a bit. This is also my first attempt at NM gold so any tips for improving it would be much appreciated.
Thanks for the feedback!
Chris
