I know :S for some reason I thought it was scruffy but then I looked in the codex at Calgar’s raider and it’s neater than the script on that. Maybe on the sponsons... it'll give me something to do before my weathering powders arrive so i can do the mud.

Thanks for all the compliments guys!
As to your questions:
I got the forgeworld model master class at GD 2008 and have used it as my tank painting bible ever since though it is not my only inspiration. I often look at rusty vehicles when I’m out and about and try and mimic the real things as much as possible.
I noticed some of you have been sceptical of the sons of Orar as they lack "fluff" I had the same view before I did my GD piece, it’s amazing how far that extra little bit of gold on a model goes to making it an awesome model.
After a long time of inner turmoil I decided not to do the interior... I just couldn't put of doing the outside any longer.
the sponge I use is a selection of the stuff from the blisters and some spare bits from my carry case... you can use any sponge its worth experimenting as you can get all sorts of different effects from different types of sponges it’s also worth trying things like wire wool and small bets of coarse carpet.

Took a few more pics this evening.
I didn’t have a huge amount of modelling time today so all I got round to doing was tidying the paint up where I had puttied around the sponson. Should be finished by Saturday if my weathering powders arrive...

Here are a couple of pics of my first Sons of Orar marine... my entry into golden demon UK 2009 which finalised in the single mini category

And here are some of my ideas I was experimenting with over the Christmas break, I quite like how the terminators are looking though the sergeant's torso is a little too far forward so may need some re-positioning.

Also, I thought your original Sons of Orar marine (which I study as an example of an amazing paintjob) had a gas mask thing on his face? is this just a different head on the same model?

The supplies have arrived and painting can continue!
The rest of the tank was weathered with oil paints to get a rusty effect then sprayed with white spirit thinners to make the rust blotches spread out naturally. I then dried excess white spirit off with a hair dryer. Though the hairdryer seems to be the main subject of the photo rather than the tank.

The vehicle was covered in a light weathering power which was fixed in place with acrylic thinners

A mud mix was created with a mix of various colour pigments, plaster and acrylic resin. It was generously applied to the tracks and surrounding area (though I may have got a little carried away)
A layer of accumulated dust was painted onto the model by brushing bleached bone paint into the cracks and join on the vehicle's armour.
@s.j.mccartney: the original model had a gas mask but shortly before GD I learnt how to use tones on faces e.g. purples near the nose/eyes etc. so I removed the gas mask head and replaced it with this one. Apart from that all is how it originally was.

It is fantastic. The way the paint has faded through all the weathering is awe inspiring. I love it. If you're going to paint a full army though I suggest you do it two tanks at a time. So you can work the same techniques on both models. It'll keep the army uniform and you'll have an assembly line going on.
I think I need to get that forgeworld masterclass book!

Thanks for the comments guys
Keep 'em coming!
Here are a few replies before today’s progress on the project.
@ s.j.mccartney I would do my vehicles at the same time, in fact I always plan to, but I tend to rush the second one as I start to get bored and want to move on. So I do some other modelling like the infantry I was working on today then do the second vehicle after a few weeks or so. This works out quite well as I can spend time analysing the vehicle for errors so I can improve on the next one.
to quote Fulgrim's attainment of perfection 'That which causes we trials shall yield us triumph, and that which makes our hearts ache shall fill us with gladness. For the only true happiness is to learn, to advance and to improve. None of this could happen without rejecting error, ignorance, and imperfection. We must pass out of the darkness to reach the light.'
@ DC_Ravenor I use GW paints for all brush work but tamiya paint are absolutely brilliant for use in an airbrush so I use both... I cannot use tamiya for any detailed work as it dries so fast.

Here are some of the converted shoulder pads I made today. The top image shows the shoulder pads with spall sheet of plasticard glued on, the second show the complete set, fully trimmed and filed to shape.
Some of the bases I made covered with crushed plaster. Once painted this looks exactly like scale crushed concrete.
The army so far. The tactical marines shoulder pads have come out really nicely.
The tactical marines after receiving a basecoat. I applied this with the airbrush, I using the mid tones for the finished models. (A mid red and a light grey)
The bases after painting. I unevenly sprayed a mid then light grey over the surfaces. A little extra shading will be created with a dusting of weathering powder, the same power will be applied to the lower legs of the marine to tie him in neatly with the base.

The marines’ heads and backpacks were sprayed separately from the models themselves for easy painting.
I also finished the landraider today. Some pics will be uploaded tomorrow.
Cheers guys

I've never seen shoulder pad trims done like that before. An interesting idea which I may steal. I love the extra protection given by the extended rims on some of the CSM shoulder pads, and never have enough of them.
May have a go at creating some using your method
18253
Post by: SONS of ORAR
@ em_en_oh_pee the best plaster to use I found is the plaster cast scenery you can get on eBay. All you do is crush it up in a vice or with a hammer. The great thing about cast plaster is the mouldings, when crushed up you can see some of the original details on some of the pieces which makes it look really realistic.

As promised here are some pictures of the finished landraider... well it’s finished apart from the storm bolter and I haven’t added a crewman.
The finished bases
The marines after a coat of Baal red wash. I was planning on getting all 10 done today but quickly abandoned the idea going for quality over quantity.
The marines part way through the painting process. Definitely starting to take shape.
Where it all happens... though in a state of mid-project delusion. Note that the paints you see is under half my collection

Some shots of the first 4 marines, 4 down 16 to 26 to go I haven’t decided whether to have 2 of 3 tactical squads.
The marines in front of the LR.
Cheers guys

Nice weathering job, those shoulderpads look great!
As to the choice of weathered or cartoony, its completely personal choice. For my Mentors vanilla army, I'll be doing them pristine, but thats because:
A: I am a virgin painter (And havent the faintest clue how to do weathering)
B: White and green when pristine (poem?) looks awesome to me
C: It is my idea of what a space marine is, proud and clean, but you can just as easily say he is in the middle of a long campaign, or the end, or the beginning.
It would be a shame to waste that talent though, so I applaud you on the choice of rusty, worn marines!
Keep going!

I notice some of you are interested in the fact that I weather my marines. I shall explain why.
It is true that almost all chapters constantly tend all there war gear so it looks and works perfectly. But this is in-between battles when they have time to return to their cruisers and battle barges etc. the sons of Orar are one of these chapters which are meticulous about the upkeep of their war gear. But in a long running campaign when marines cannot return to the arming rooms of their starships their armour will get dusty and worn, especially when many worlds in the galaxy have hostile environments. the planet my Sons of Orar are currently engaged on (for my colour scheme) is a fierce desert world with occasionally heavy storms of acidic rain which turns the dust on the planet into a thick cloying mud, like that which has dried on the Landraider. As we know adamantium does not rust but paint on armour can discolour and get grimy with time spent in such an environment.
@ Captain Shrike : to cut away the excess plasticard around the outside of the shoulder pad I just used a sharp craft knife. the instead is a bit harder... the best way is with a small rotary file though you can use a knife, this tends to take up more time than with the file and can get really fiddly at times.
@ Aduro : sarcasm or not the knobbly shoulder pad is always on the left shoulder of Corvus-pattern armour so HA!!
@ The happy reaper : 'cartoony' or clean armour is great to start off with, I’d love to see some pics of your models. If you want any painting tips feel free to ask and if you want I can teach you some simple weathering techniques e.g. paint chips, these are really simple and can give each model a bit more character without making them look like they've been in combat without respite for years. If you want some help or tip just private message me.
Who thinks I should try and do a company of these marines? No promises, it’s still in the idea stage... but who knows...

SONS of ORAR wrote:@ Aduro : sarcasm or not the knobbly shoulder pad is always on the left shoulder of Corvus-pattern armour so HA!!
Are you sure? I could have sworn the old fluff on the studded shoulders were that they were weaker, but much easier to mass produce during the times when thousands of Marines were being created during the crusades. As a result, the studded shoulder pad was always on the right arm, and Marines were trained to walk sidewaysish into the fight, facing their left shoulder at the enemy, which makes more sense when you consider how they hold and fire their Bolters.
I don't really care that much, as I'll always make changes to make something look cooler if I don't care for particular fluff (my t-fex looks nothing like the picture in the codex). I just like poking fun at people, especially the ones with Really Cool stuff.

Post by: SONS of ORAR
That may be so with Mark 5 "Heresy Armour" which came into production just before the Horus heresy (hence the name). This was a series of plates of ceramic, plast-steel and adamantium which were bolted on top of each other. Corvus or mark 6 armour came after the heresy and is a mixture of different armours mixed up in a way. But the knobbly shoulder pad is definitely on the left. Have a look at http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Power_armor#Mark_6_.22Corvus_Armor.22

The work is fabulous
My only criticism would be I think you've overdone the weathering a bit. The technique is great but this does not look like some techmarine's pride and joy.
Real tanks never look quite that bad when they're in use - they get that way by being left to rot for a few years!

You can always explain things in the fluff-world of 40k.
E.g. A salt heavy atmosphere on one planet - advanced rusting on normal metals, such as Leman Russes
Acidic rain is a good reason as any.
@ Orar, thanks, I'll be sure to send you some pics, and call on you for advice once I start painting them (soon hopefully.) I might take you up on those weathering techniques later too.
I have an idea for an old dreadnought (the main reason i'm starting 40k) who refuses to allow minor damage to be repaired, only his armor sealed.
An idea for the future.
I'm highly anticipating those termies btw.
18253
Post by: SONS of ORAR
@ Chimera_Calvin : I see where you're coming from. I don’t think the dust or rust is OTT as I studied a number of German tanks from battles in Russia in the second world war which were in a pretty messy shape, but still operational and you have to remember that many imperial planets have very harsh conditions compared to Earth, e.g. Vraks. Though I was thinking about the mud and from the amount of it up the sides it must have travelled through mud about 6 feet deep. This is not unheard of for a LR but I truth if I were doing it again then I would only have about a cm of that thick mud at most up the sides and not do quite so many rust streaks( it is adamantium after all! ). Like my other LR I have pics of on Dakka Dakka.

I honestly think people convert and paint models for many different reasons. Some people want the models to represent the fluff to a very high degree and some, like sons of orar, are obviously intent on extending and perfecting their painting skills. I feel he has definitely acheived something awesome with these marines and what shoulder pad is on which shoulder is not that important.
keep up the good work

Yowch is that heat cracking on his legs. Dumb question but who are these Marines fighting? If it's mean't to be 'nids they'd have claw scratches and acid burns Necrons they'd just have bits missing etc.....Also it's probably worth thinking about where a Marine would get hit. Most damage would probably be on the shoulder pads and be a vertical blow as thats where people hit each other...Hope that helps. These are awesome and I'd love a few weathering battle damage how to's at some point and thats a great hint with the plaster for bases. I also can't wait to see more Renegade stuff!
18253
Post by: SONS of ORAR
No, it isn’t heat cracking. I copied it from one of the pieces of art in the old SM codex. It’s meant to look like bands of armour on his legs. It does look a bit silly at the moment as I haven't 'knocked back' the colour with any washes. And thanks for the tip ... I haven’t really thought about who they're fighting, probably renegades with a few chaos marines.

Amazing work so far, truly inspirational techniques, I might take a few of those ideas for my CSM though I know I'm not as awesome a painter as you obviously are.
One thing I will say, if you do decide to do Latin script on tanks, you should aim for some real Latin rather than the faux Latin of the 'Ipso dolore' which is not Latin, but a miscopy of an old text. It works great if you want filler text which doesn't attract the eye, but finding some real Latin which means something would (in my own opinion) be more interesting.
There are passages from Caesar's War diaries here: http://ancienthistory.about.com/library/bl/bl_text_caesar_latin_gallic.htm and if you fancy parts of nature, the works of Pliny the Elder here http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/pliny_the_Elder/home.html have all sorts of different chapters which can provide you with texts.
Just an idea, I'm an Ancient History student so a bit of a stickler for such things Feel free to ignore me, just thought you might enjoy adding something extra.
Keep up the good work and I will be watching your Chapter's progress with interest.

Here is a bit of a painting tutorial
The model has been spray basecoated with red. You can get this colour by mixing mechrite and blood red 1:1 it was then washed with Baal red and the white, gold and metal bit basecoated and highlighted.
After the first highlight of the mechrite red: blood red: blazing orange mix (2:1:1) this was roughly painted onto the areas which were to be highlighted and scratched.
Second highlight complete; mechrite red: blood red: blazing orange: bronzed flesh mix (1:2:1:3)
Helmet and backpack attached.
After the first wash of Devlan mud. I wiped some of the wash off the helmet and shoulder pads with my finger as these areas wouldn’t get as dirty.
After a wash of gryphon sepia into the areas which would receive the most dirt. The model is bases at this stage.

The model almost finished... just a few last things to touch ups, and of course the bolter. The eyes need to be redefined, and some further shading is needed on the gold and steel areas.

The best paints to use are tamiya acrylics thinned with tamiya acrylic thinner. I bought a similar set about a year ago from the same seller.

Here’s a tip. Always keep your airbrush clean: Don’t be afraid to take it to pieces occasionally to clean out the insides. If you do get any paint that dries inside you can use a spot of nail polish remover which acts like a mild paint-stripper.
And remember to upload some pics so we can see your handy work

These are absolutely fantastic. I just have one question.
The Marine on the first page, that you said was in GD...What is that thing on his stomach? It looks rather nurgle-ish, like part of Typhus's Destroyer hive.
18253
Post by: SONS of ORAR
@ TempusCorvus: the thing on his stomach is half a Dark Angels' incense burner. I don’t know what it would be in reality... just a decoration I suppose... just put it on 'cause it looks cool and made him unique.

The tactical squad so far... I didn't get as much time as I would have liked painting this weekend, but anyway this is what I got done. All that need to be done now to them is painting and adding the bolters, re-defining a couple of highlights and checking to make sure all the models are uniform. Oh, and of course the marine with the plasma cannon!
If all goes to plan there should be a nice 'pic-heavy' update coming along in the next couple of days.

The re-based sergeant ready for battle!
Just thought you might like to have a look at this, it’s an original print of the SM codex artwork I won at GD UK 2008 for my entry in the 16 and under artwork category. Fantastic work. I love it that you're not afraid to rebase your veteran srg. Its so cool that you have a golden daemon model as a troops choice in your army!!
By the way, where did you get that terminator head? on the last picture he's the second dude from the right. It looks like a grey knight terminator. Very cool.

I wouldn't call it wasted time Unless there was a supermodel waiting in bed for you and she had to leave forever in a few hours time. Then yes, you wasted that precious time!

To answer some questions:
a lot of you ask why I’m so good at painting for my age... it’s all just experimenting and thinking about how to paint something from real life really small... e.g. with my tanks I look at rust on real vehicles and try to replicate it on my minis.. This is easy to do... as in you don’t have to go and stare at rusty cars all day long... just quick glances at stuff you pass when you're out and about is sufficient usually.
and some of you 15 year olds are saying that you can’t paint like me... that's because I’m 17 not 15... Trust me when I was 15 my painting was about the level of yours, there's plenty of time to practice, experiment and improve.
This is my DA army I painted when I was 15... The pic isn't great quality but you can see my standard of painting then... I sold this army just before Christmas
@ Imperial Monkey : it takes about 1 to 3 hours to paint each model, and the Heavy flamer terminator head comes from a Bretonian knight with the plumes filed off...
@ s.j.mccartney : that is a normal terminator head but with the sides cut off at angles... I can do a tutorial on how to make them if you want, it’s quite simple

Here is the recipe for the white.
1. Basecoat the areas a mix of Iyanden dark sun, Graveyard Earth and rotting flesh 1:5:1
2. Add a brush of Skull White to the mix and some more rotting flesh if you want.
3. carry on adding skull white (a brush at a time) and occasionally some bleached bone or rotting flesh. Add 1 more brush of skull white for every highlight. I used about 15 tonnes for the skull helmet.
The smaller the difference between the paint tones the smoother the painting looks... (There’s a painting competition tip)

Loving your work as usual Sons. On the Dreadnaught, it looks great and personally I'm looking at it for a possible Grey knight dready but I've heard ruleswise that a Venerable just doesn't stand up to a vanilla dread in terms of flexibility or value for points. Are you gonna run him as a Venerable or normal? Or are you less worried about how it plays then how it looks? Cheers BLACKHAND

Sons congratulations that is some truly beautiful work you have there, like others have said probably one of the best seen in a while now. I especially liked the conversions on the LR, subtle but very effective. One question, and you must excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is the process for basing your models? What I mean is how do ensure they will fit properly? Also do you pin them as well as glue them to the base or just glue?

Here are some more pics of the chaplain.

I had a bit of time yesterday evening so I got the parchment done. Many of you are asking for tutorials, they are on their way but as you may already know I’m at college 5 days a week and have work to do most evenings so I can’t do as much painting and blogging as I and you may have liked.
As to the questions:
@ Lennysmash:
1. I paint the top of the base with PVA glue and sprinkle it with crushed plaster scenery.
2. The bases are sprayed with chaos black then various shades of grey.
3. I use some SM legs to crush the plaster in the correct place and the superglue on the model.
4. The base and model are dusted with some weathering powder.
@ BLACKHAND: I’m not sure at the moment. I bought them 'cause they were so cool. I’ll choose when I work out an army list.
@ Mafty: I will put up a tutorial as soon as possible . There should be some tip in the article but I’ll do a proper one soon

I think it looks pretty cool, especially with the weathering powder dusted on the lower legs; it ties the model in really well with the base. Have a look at the purity seal on his right shoulder pad; it was an experiment with some off cuts of etched brass, came of rather nicely.
There should be a lot more nice, big, tasty updates next week as its half term break

@ Vitruvian XVII : to answer your off topic question, I am studying maths, physics, chemistry and geography. I was taking art as well but it was too much work and I didn't particularly like the course provided by the college so I dropped it. I’m looking at studying material science/engineering at uni so I need some pretty good grades. Just out of interest why do you ask?
Now on to some 'on topic' questions
@ Llamahead : to be honest with you I do not have a clue. A friend of mine allowed me to raid his bits box about 3 years ago and that when I got it. I think its Bretonian though I’m not sure (I filed off all the crests and plumes etc).
@ Mafty : I did mention a couple of bits and bobs in this blog (that’s why I didn't link it) though I will put up a tutorial as soon as possible. In the meantime feel free to PM me or comment on this blog if you want to know anything in particular.
I applied the first 4 tone to all the bone areas on the model this evening. I also decided to paint the upper legs red to tie him in with the army. I intended to spend more time on this model (it being a character) than my other models so I am very pleased with it so far (after about 8 hours work). I’m planning to spend at least a month on my GD piece for this year so if this is what I can crack out in a couple of hours things are looking promising for this year. I just need to find "the" model. Something I won’t get bored of after a week's painting. But anyway that’s for later, in the meantime I’ve got this army to do... and here are some pics of today's work.

Definitely starting to take shape.

Well... after what seems lake absolutely ages the first tactical squad is 100% complete!
And here are some pictures

I had an idea today and I was wondering what you people think. I’m going to carry on the Sons of Orar scheme but mix it up a bit to give the models some more individuality. E.g. have some marines with red helmets shoulder pads etc. and paint other parts of them white like hands or feet or torso etc.
Good idea or bad idea?
14571
Post by: gretar
For space marines I concider it a bad idea , unless its something along the lines of "captains have red helmets , but instead they have white knee pads/greaves ."
For an Ork Clan it would be a good idea hwoever , as they arent as organized as the marines are
22039
Post by: Rose_Mountainz
Bad ideá, stick to white heads and shoulders. Or else they wont look like sons of orar. It's like any other chapter, you don't paint a white scars marine in any other colors than red and white as an example.

On the contrary, I think changing up the colors is a great idea, but you should do it in an organized fashion. Maybe reverse the color for veteran, assault, or devastator squads to make them stand out. This way it seems as if there is a reason for their different coloration, as opposed to making your army look unorganized.

Its your army, its your choice. I reckon that you're a painter more than a gamer, so do what looks cool in your eyes! But if you want to get into the fluff you could write a legend about Orar, how he touched the armour of his warriors who showed the most courage, and those parts of armour were painted white as a mark of respect. So you can mix up your white shoulder pads, helmets, arms etc.. Keep up the awesome work! [edit] ps. loving the purple plasma cannon and gun!!

These Space Marines are awesome! I really like how you paint them, they look real, instead of the pristine look the Marines in the Codex have.
Also, in most of your pictures about the progress of the army, the models aren't fully built; I've tried that before, and whenever I try it, after the models get glued, they don't look like they are all one piece, as your models do. How do you build them so they look as seemless as they do, and, any tips on how to achieve this look with other models?

I thought you might like to see this picture, it’s my main source of inspiration. And I have just noticed that there is a fatal flaw in the painting of my librarian... though as I’m still painting him there shouldn't be any problems with fixing him up ... if all goes well I might get a demon this year... well that's where I shall be aiming... I have to get further than I did in 2009
Anyway yeah, less of my own goals, this model is by Fernando Prieto Carbonell who is an absolutely awesome painter (as you can see) he has a fine 6 golden demons to his name and 2 slayer swords.

Cause i want to enter Golden Daemon but would rather not waste my time if your in it...
18253
Post by: SONS of ORAR
Yes, and the grass is in fact yellow with I tiny bit of green grass added... remember acid rain is not hydrochloric acid it’s about as acidic as beer (pH 4 to 5) so grass could grow quite easily... grass grows near the sea in sand dunes even though the sea is both very salty and an alkali... Automatically Appended Next Post: Got the assault squad partially assembled and sorted out the shading on the librarians hand, making it nice and smooth I’ll be uploading some pics tomorrow
To answer some questions.
@ s.j.mccartney. The grass was really an experiment on these guys though I used my usual techniques. 1. Put a small amount of PVA glue where you want the grass. 2. Apply LOADS of static grass in almost like a pile on the base. 3. Push down on the grass pile firmly to get as much as possible to stick to the glue. 4. turn the model upside down and gently tap to remove all the excess grass, this also makes the strands stand up vertically making it a lot more realistic... another way to add grass is with tweezers, though I find this far to fiddly when doing multiple models.
@ Sweord. Well I assemble the models filly with very small amounts of glue to get the right look, and then take off the bits I want to paint separately. Or I use one part as a template. E.g. use a bolter to make sure the arms on the marine are in the right place. The other think which is quite obvious is doing apply glue where it could be seen. I use very small amounts of super glue to glue on the bolter and backpack.

How many other races have you tried modeling and painting? Or even different games? I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work! Just curious but, I"ve seen you mention paint ratios, but I've never been taught about water ratio. Is that a figure out on you own thing with plastic and metal or is there a helpful hint?

@ Biscuit#14: Over the years I have collected every race of lord of the rings warhammer apart from dwarfs (I moved to 40K just before they came out). In the 40k universe I have collected space marines (as you can see), tyranids, chaos space marines, orks, imperial guard and nercrons. As to paint to water ratios, if you’re a beginner painter then it really doesn't matter. If you want to do basic highlighting thin the paint down paint : water 3:1 or 3:2... If you're doing single miniatures then you want to thin it at least 1:1 to get smooth shading I often use 1:3 paint to water or even 1:4 to get a nice smooth gradient in shades.

Also had a quick crack at the heavy flamer terminator. You can see the head a lot better with a coat of paint. The model has only received the basecoat so far.
Awesome stuff! I just want to know how you did the sallet-style helm on this guy

Some pics of the librarian so far (about 8 to 10 hours work) I’m pretty pleased with my shading on the lower arm armour (the only finished bit) my light sourcing has come out really nicely. I was a bit sceptical of doing such a dark grey under the arm but it looks pretty good along with the paint chips and rust streaks.

One of my ideas for basing the assault marines. I was planning on putting them on different lengths of wire from about 1cm to 4cm long.
What do you think?
24364
Post by: CrazyThang
Are you going to cover the wire with something like raptors have or will you leave it exposed and paint it a "background" color? Or neither?
12136
Post by: Lorgar's_Blessed
As a suggestion, and since I know you're up to it, why not attach the wire to the backpack?
You could then attach cotton, spray paint and airbrush it into proper color, and even leave some light coming from the exhaust port from the fire. This would cover the wire and make your Assault Marines look BEAUTIFUL.

Or go for armour cast bits.

I've never been a fan of the the second founding ultramarine chapters. But you sir/madam, have changed my mind! I say hats off to you, sons of orar. That is excellent. I can't wait to see the venerable dread! And I think the smoke from the jump pack is a grand idea.

Won a regional painting competition today. I beat the guys who used to teach me to paint up until about 3 months ago Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and about the assault marines base, I was just going to paint the wire black or dark grey. I don't like the idea of flames coming out of SM jump packs. Maybe for ork storm boyz, think about it, no flames and smoke come out of modern military jet engines so why should it come out of jump packs for warriors 38,000 years in the future? Though I do like your light effect idea. I was thinking doing light blue to white inside the engines with a bit of light effect on the armour under the jets.
Thanks Dee for the armour cast idea, I hadn't seen that site before and I’m highly temped now by the muzzle flashes for bolters

Hey guys back from Italy now ... yesterday the guy came to drop off my dreadnoughts and nobody answered the door so no dreads till Monday :(
Thanks for the feedback on the helmet conversion... looking at it now I see what you mean, its just way too big for his helmet so as you say, I’m going to put in to his back pack...
A lot of you asked for a shoulder pad tutorial when I was doing the tactical squad so here it is.
A rectangle of plasticard was cut out a bit bigger the back of the shoulder pad.
This was also done for the bottom of the shoulder pad.

The larger piece of plasticard was glued on with super glue, the smaller one.
Once the glue was 100% dry the inside of the shoulder pad was carefully filed out with a small rotary file.

The same was done to the outside, and the shoulder pad is ready to glue onto your model, if you're fussy then you can fill in any cracks with green stuff, though I don't bother with table quality models. Though if it’s for a competition it is defiantly worthwhile as attention to detail is what makes a winner!

Got 3 assault marines painted today and plenty of pics of them for you to see and comment on.
I also thought up a bit of fluff today about different coloured helmets:
Red helmets are worn by marines on their first tour of duty with that squad, once they have done their first campaign (on return to the fortress monastery) they are fully initiated into that particular squad and given a white helmet. Marines that have served with particular bravery or have served with a squad for a long time may have other parts of their armour painted white to signify their deeds and service.
What do you think?
Anyway onto the marines painted today.

I’m really pleased with them. The spikes on the shoulder pad were a spur of the moment idea, all they are the heads of pins inserted into small pre-drilled holes. You can also see in the last picture the glow from the jump pack engines.

The engines were painted with watered down ice blue then heavily dry-brushed with skull white. I then painted over the area with a dark blue wash. The results aren't bad though they could be a little brighter. Maybe a little more highlighting with an ice blue and skull white mix?? I’ll have to experiment a bit more I think

Well here are the pics of the dreadnought as he is at this very moment ... what do you think.
It is an awesome kit. It even has ALL the weapon options! No need for extra parts, all the arm variants are there and you can build and have all 3 of them not just the one you usually get.
Anyway less of my chat and more of the pictures.
This is how he looks at the moment. Note; the white thing under his foot is a lump of plaster (a lump of concrete when he's painted up)
The other weapon arms.
The marine inside (how awesome is that?!)
The engine.
The two of them...

Some of the awesome parts in the kit.
Enjoy!
@ Empchild : I see where you're coming from. It is a little less "codex" though it was a fun little conversion even though it may be a little more chaos-ie you could say?

Quick question!
(Or two!)
Are the marine helmets that come with the Venerable Dread kit 'marine sized'?
And, could you take some pics of the helmets from the dread kit on regular marine bodies?
Thanks!
18253
Post by: SONS of ORAR
The helmets are marine sized though they don’t have the same neck piece as normal marines; instead they are the same as terminator helmets. This isn’t a problem though if you know how to use a file. I offered one up to a marine body today so there'll be some pics in a couple of days.
I finished assembling the 1st dread today so I’ll take some pics ready to show you in my nest update. as it is such a lovely kit I’ll probs spend a couple of days painting it (like I did with the LR) though as its got so much detail I think that spraying it would not be the best idea, though I’ll decide when I get round to painting it.
as I’ve now seen the new blood angels stuff and am thinking how cool it is, I’m thinking of maybe having a squad or two of them in my army... good idea?
Cheers, SoO

Unfortunately I have my AS level exams coming up in about 6 to 8 weeks so I won't be able to update the blog as often as I have been doing in the past. I also won't be able to do as much painting as I have been doing (I won't be doing any in the week) ... the reason is I need some good results... if I don't get them I won't be able to get a good job to pay for the models I paint... as you all know: no model = no army = no blog
So from now on I’ll be doing a blog update with pictures every 1 or 2 weeks until early June as to an update every couple of days.
but on a more cheery note: I managed to squeeze in about 6 hours of modelling this weekend around the revision and managed to largely paint Lucien... well he is totally painted apart from his flag and some other little details as you will see...

The flag was detached for painting but I’m pleased with the result so far.

Some more detailed shots of the weapon options. I tried the same scorching effect as I used on the lascannons on the Land Raider.
A picture or rust on an iron gate I saw this morning... might have a go at replicating it on some armour.
i'll have a go at writing ome more fluff in my free time and i'll put up some pics of dread heads on marines as soon as possible
Cheers,
