would be funny at a competition, you have uniformed germans against us airborne, and a random airborne guy is standing there with an airsoft boltgun screaming "for the emperor!"
The next one will be a working airsoft model. I had to work out some details in this current Bolter which is built on a spring airsoft gun.
I have the tech and know-how to finally make a working airsoft model...They are not strong enough to be used in the field though, they will be made to be display models. If you chose to take it out and play an airsoft game with it, it is at your own risk.
However I will only trade for it once it's done.
I will build it and paint it in the color scheme of the persons choice, i.e. Ultra Marines, Space Wolves, Blood Angels etc..
Fluff wise though bolters have no casings, their rockets start out at high speed. And chain swords are more effective at close range. Even the tank commanders want to use them.

not according to lexicanum
The autogun is a firearm similar to a twentieth century automatic rifle in appearance and operation. Unlike twentieth century versions, it uses small caliber, caseless bullets which are made from metal or synthetic materials. It has a high rate of fire, shooting bursts of high-velocity rounds.
Autoguns often find their way into the hands of all forms of militia, and are the standard arm in less advanced cultures

This means that an ejection port is completely unnecessary. However, I completely understand you putting one on the gun, as the models, pictures etc all have them.
It's a discrepancy within 40k, and is only a factor because GW wanted to make the guns look like we expect them to, not how they would actually look.
But other than that (which is more my over-pedantic-ness than anything) the bolter, and bolt pistols look freaking awesome, and I can't wait to see the bolter all painted up =D

Also the offical artwork shows casings flying out of bolters... Just look at the new blood angel codex....
They controdict themselves so often it isn't even funny really, well it kinda is.

sorry, that does not make any sense, how are you meant to propel bullets without a casing. because it sounds like they are trying to say that autoguns fire musket shots with gunpowder.

Because that would mean that it was like a bolter . . . how peculiar . . .

You might want to check your facts before spouting out about something you don't actually know, like, y'know that modern caseless ammunition exists.
"Modern caseless ammunition consists of a solid mass of propellant, originally nitrocellulose, cast into shape to form the body of the cartridge, with cavities to accept the bullet and a primer, preferably combustible, which are glued into place. The completed cartridge might also contain a booster charge of powdered propellant, to help ignite the body and provide initial thrust to the bullet."
Please do not derail my thread with stuff about the fluff around bolters and real life weapons arguments.
Thanks

Well, I'll be looking for Bitz, lots of bitz, multiple space hulk termies, Forge world stuff, sister stuff, custom stuff and so on.
When I'm ready with the 1st gun, I will post a list of items I'm looking for.
One of the key things I will be looking for is the limmited forge world Sister statue of Ephrael Stern along with the
Inquisitor scale Sisters of Battle Sister Repentia.
This was a beautiful thread once... filled hopes, dreams, and sweet pictures of huge guns and Finnlock's girlfriend's ass.
You all went and ruined it, you should be ashamed!

Not necessarily comparable, since Warhammer 40k Bolter rounds have an explosive warhead. The real-life MBAssociates Rocketeer pistol fired what was essentially a rocket-propelled solid bullet. While the Rocketeer reportedly had less effect against close targets than a normal gun would (because it took more time/distance for the projectile to reach its maximum velocity), I'm not sure that means a Bolter would have the same problem. For all I know, a Bolter round could function like a shaped charge, with the projectile's speed having essentially no effect on the amount of damage it can inflict.
EDIT:

...err, whoops.
*ahem*
I'd add that you are fantastically lucky in having a girlfriend who's willing to participate in this, and I am quite jealous.
Your work is fantastic and I'm looking forward to more.
All I know is I'm pretty damn impressed with the Sisters' gear. I winced a little just thinking about all the time, effort, dedication, and problem solving this whole endeavor must have taken. Bravo, bravo.
jetjetex wrote:how much would one of them cost after its done?
I'm not going to be selling them, don't need a lawyer enima from GW.
After today I don't know if I'll have the drive to make a working airsoft modle...
I had some set backs on the costume as a whole today, I had stuff break and the Bolter reacted badly to some paint I tried to used... :(
But after a lot of clean up here are some WIP of the Bolter, I went with the same color sheme as the hand flamer.
So much to do and only 1 month till Games Day.. :(
The Scope is set with magenets.
Cocking lever action
Bolt cover open.
What happened with the paint... if you don't mind reliving it. It looks good. could you use this as a blueprint for making one on top of a working airsoft gun?
Those must be strong magnets to be holding up what looks to be a real scope!
I hope the set-backs haven't been enough to put you off the project. This stuff is awesome, and a true inspiration. I have yet to pick up any PCV sheets, but I'm looking to get some in a week or two (gotta save up).
I had some rubberized paints I thought would be cool to use on the fore grip...It damn near melted the plastic and I had to scrape it off. I was none to please abut this.. Took me about an hour and a half to scrape and sand it down to wear I could paint it again.
The grip is slightly warped becouse of it now :(
I also broke one of the new shoulder pads shaping it :( :(
I was able to repair it, but it will not be as strong now.
*sigh*
Not enough to put me off, but puts me behind schedule
I cant wait to see the finished product! You should defenatly go as an ad-mech techpriest considering it would be an easy costume and your gonna be doing maintenance all day anyway.
You should try incorporating one of those camel pack things into the back pack so its not to brutaly hot for your gf
I also broke one of the new shoulder pads shaping it :( :(
I was able to repair it, but it will not be as strong now.
What's that, battle damage you say?
I've been having a lot of trouble making a template for my power fist. The outside is suppose to be one piece of metal, I figure, but I can't figure out how to measure the conic curve for a flat "cut-out" pattern. I think I'm gonna have to do a few pieces, but I can work that into the theme, since it's an ork PK.
Too bad your not working on a meltagun, the foregrip would be less of a problem and more of a funny fluff joke... "gets hot"
Love every thing your doin. I am not sold on the scope though, I just think its too small and thin for the bolter and honestly with a few telescoping sizes of PVC and your obvious skill level you should be able to make one more suited to what youve made. Wow man just WOW! Very cool stuff all the way along.
I run a shop and if its not too crazy ( mind you I am a bit mental anyways lol ) I would be interested in making one of those as a prize for my customers for a 40K event. Any chance you have blue prints or such?

Thanks for the kind words, I built everything in our APT ( much to her displeasure). I made a painting box which is vented to the outside, so no fumes!
I'm of mixed feelings about the scope myself which is why it's on magnets. To be perfectly frank scopes on bolters seems very silly anyway!
Anyway, I'm sorry to say I don't have any blue prints... I just kinda made it up as I went along. I knew in my head what I wanted and I have enough XP now working with this stuff to just kinda "do it".
When I'm done and less stressed I'll do a more indepth write up on making one.
Okay, after a really unlucky day I sat down and did some more work on the legs. Here is are some WIP of the right lower leg.
I think you'd be better off working on the rest of the costume instead of spending all your time on the bolter. It looks good as it is and a 'not quite perfect to you but brilliant to anyone else' + armour would be more impressive than a perfect bolter and half done armour? Just because of the time pressure.
WIP of the shoulders/neck/chest build so far. The powerfist has cabling, but you really can't see it in this pic (only one I have)...
Time is running out and so much still to do!

How hilarious would it be to wear that space marine outfit to work or while mowing. Oh man Ive got to do that. Id look like a plague marine, but thats totally fine with me
Something seems off with the scrolling on the sides of the gun. Mostly the back one, I do not know what it is though. It still looks great just something is off.
I like the added details, its the little things that go along way and Id say your WELL on your way with that one. So cool. Raven ought to rock with all her new toys and you sir will reap the praises on the day. Really lookin forward to seeing your work in person, and meeting you both.
That marine is the best one I have seen yet. I have seen tons of them over the years and there is always something off. The Thunder hammer needs scaling up like 4 times to fit the "heroic" look, but over all the costume is the best Ive seen. Thanks for posting that pic up.
*whistles* that is amazing, looks so real although it does look better without the scope, I didn't even know SOB boltguns had a scope until you mentioned it

So, like or dislike?
Me, I like 'em. Right has more finish work done to it, including some battle damge.
I agree with Aduro. Perhaps if you turned the fleur-de-lys into a larger kneepad seperate from the greeve, it may improve the look and make them both appear to be part of the same suit of armour.
My opinion is that both symbols look great seperately, but when put side by side the skull is too big and too prominent. A possible solution would be to make the fleur-de-lys stick out more; make it more of a 3d shape, if you know what I mean. I don't think you can do anything to make the skull stick out less without damaging it. (but then you've surprised us all before, so who knows..?)
Edit: Oh, and instead of having the armor to the sides of the fleur curve inward, make them curve outward to reflect the shape of the skull pad.
BTW, bead shops and such stock quite nice small and large fleur-de-lis made of brass. I used some on my Titan. You may be well aware of thier existence, so apologies in advance. They would look awesome as a hairclip or something(Accessories, Baby!)?? They even have small eyelets, so attached to sleeper earrings or somesuch?
Anyhoo...
And yes , as always, your stuff is amazing. Good luck with progress!
Thanks for the heads up. Yes, I knew they have them, I get a lot of the stuff I use from those kinds of shops. Makes things stand out when you add the kinda detailing.

Okay, These photos are from a WIP test fit of the upper armor with out the under robes. It is inteneded to give me a visual reffernce to see what areas I still need to work out. I'm pleased and thought they look cool, so I wanted to share them...what do you think?
For those of you who need it....Gratuitous ass shot..you know who you are..
Stunning work. Its looking amazing, and the level of detail you have put into this is nothing short of fantastic. I cannot wait to see it finished. And you may have inspired me to make my own 40k costume.
Impressive! It takes skill and dedication to build a costume like that. I salute you and your lady.
I like the wear and weathering you've added.
Just a few things I was wondering though:
I don't know how it looks in real life, but the white of the helm and collar seem a bit bright and artificial compared to the rest of the suit in the pictures?
How will you attach the backpack and such? Will you also make a back section for that and to cover up the rear of the corset? Or have you found another solution?
Hello all, thanks for the kind words and great feed back!
Modhail, The helm and collar are quite dirty looking in RL, I think the flash makes then look brighter then they are because of the reflectve nature of white paint.
I do have a backpack I'm finishing that will cover up the back of the corset. The backpack will clip directly into the shoulder ring and have an ancher strap around the waist. If you look at the 1st suiot of armor I made I will be using the same style of attachment. It worked well the 1st time and I hope with a small amount of adjustment it will work even better this time.
Finnlock wrote:

Ah, true. Perhaps that's what makes the helmet look off. Should have thought of that because I have the same kind of problem when I try to take photos of raw plasticard stuff, even without a flash.
Not my work, but here are some shots of a friends build from the forums at http://z6.invisionfree.com/Obscurus_Crusade/index.php?act=idx Probobly one of the best marine armor builds I have seen. Scaled to his body so he dosen't look slowed in it and can accually move!
Yeah, he made it out of paper and bondo....and he built it in like 3 weeks, it was his 2nd suit ever made, 1st time using Pep files.....guy is scary good..
Small update as we are hard at work finishing this armor in time.
Here is the back-up backpack she will be wearing. The backpack I wanted to make was to much tech in to little time, so I made this one in the mean time.
This is a very light weight pack and attaches to the armor with no visable straps which is cool
This is all amazing. Seeing this has refueled my desire for Space Marine armor. Im definately using your idea for my bolt pistol(s)

I just checked back a page and saw this. This was exactly how I envisoned my armor. Including the hammer. I planned on having a hammer w/ the armor I eventually make for so long
working with an armour working mate who has experience working with stab material & kevlar, were looking at making up a complete scout armour for SQB airsoft at the mo, so hoping the project takes off!
That would be sick! I would love to see that. One of my next projects is to build the working AEG airsoft bolter. Got a few other things to make before that however, need to make Raven's Halloween costume 1st. She is eithr going to be Hellgirl(Hellboy with girly bits) or Alice from resident evil 3 ( suits from RE4 don't look as fun but then aghan we have not seen it yet).

Other than that, those purity seals are excellent, and the battle damage to them is very realistic. In fact it makes me wonder... Would a Sister replace her damaged purity seals after every battle, or keep the damaged ones until they are totally unreadable?
Okay, fixed the spelling on the seal (opps) and did a final test fit tonight. I know I said I wasn't going to post any full suit pics till after Games Day...but I can't help it..
Thats awesome o.o I had no idea you were so close to completion. Of course, I dont pay much attention Thats an awesome suit and you sir are good at your craft.
Thanks everyone. Is anyone going to have a table or booth set up at GD? I'd like very much to have a "home base" where I can leave some things while we go around and have a place for Raven to sit down away from everyone when she needs a rest. Also a place to do repairs if it comes to that... :/
Consider yourself lucky that you have a girlfriend that would let you create a costume like this for them. Many guys I know have wife's that just shake their head when we mention going to play let alone want to have a costume made for them that will wear it at a convention where they will be the center of attention.

Awwwwww yea, thats wicked! Its a shame its getting so heavy, will your Girlfriend of Battle be able to carry it? I made a flamethrower prop (team fortress 2 style) for my GF, but it was a huge hassle for her to carry it any length of time :( Made an axe-tinguisher out of foam for when she got tired!
We got there really late due to traffic (DAMN YOU rt95!!!) and missed the costume contest, but still had fun. Everyone was super nice and respectful when asking for photos. Saddly I did not get to do any shopping ( wanted space hulk minis :( ) or see the whole con. Still all in all a lot of fun and was nice to get the armor out in public and let people see it. It held up really well and Raven was comfortable in it which made me very happy.
Big congrats on getting everything together for GD, the suit looks fantastic. Pity about 95 showing no love and denying a great chance at the costume contest, but glad you both got to share the suit and win yourselves more fans
Finnlock, just a quick question about the armor. If someone where willing to pay for the supplies, the build and the time put into making one, would you sell your armor to someone?
Thanks for the heads up. I am looking for photos of the armor if you find any. I found this one and it's a good one, shows a lot of the details missing from my photos.
and a video which has the backpack shown at the end.

Sorry to hear that you did not make the costume contest, however, I think that had you made it, the judges may not have given
you the win because the costume is just "too" good....I can see them refusing to believe that a fan made that costume. Be prepared....
some Hollywood movie director is going to come knocking on your door to design and build the costumes for a Sisters of Battle themed
movie!!!!
I do hope that GW takes note of your efforts....you could single handedly (with your partner, of course) be responsible for a sudden upsurge in the popularity of the Sisters of Battle army!
Just scanned through this and I gotta say top marks for your efforts!
Geekspot - Those pistols from back at the start look suspiciously like they were built around the MP5 mini electrics?
(I just can't bring myself to call them AEG's...)
Made from toy MP5's the scale was a not quite 1:1 so they fit Raven's hands well. I bought them at Dallor General for like 8 bucks each.
They are hollow plastic which is good, makes them light and easy to work with

Wow, thanks, that's probably the nicest thing someone has said about the armor I would LOVE to see some love for the sisters, they need it! I have loved the look of their army from the moment I first saw it!
I hate that they changed GD to a single city. I was going to go this year and all here in Il. I missed last years due to just starting out and no ride.
Great work on the costume, its flat out amazing!
Been following this since day one, nicely done. Though I don't believe this has been asked if it has my fault. Do you have any more projects for costume work such as this or within 40k? Or perhaps any updates etc to the current SOB costume?

Good question...I guess I have to say I'm not sure what to do next after I finish Raven's Halloween costume ( think it's going to be Hellgirl)...I want to make another chainsword and do a tutorial on it, also I need to start project Airsoft bolter and finish project nerf bolt pistol.....interms of 40k costumes....Maybe an inquisitor costume for myself... And for Raven I think a Cannonness all in white and gold complete with a tricked out cherubim would be cool....
hmmm, that's a lot of projects for as slow as I work...
Ah interesting, I'll be hoping something comes about with the costumes and what not. keep up the good work. Have you thought of maybe xeno related? Eldar, tau, and ork etc and other races? Also if you don't mind me asking another question of you, do you run the forum that is in your link? just curious.

I must say the costume looked even more amazing in person than in the photos!!! Most costumes look "costumey" or cartoony... but yours looked real due to the amazing detail you added. I've made costumes myself in the past and your blew me away.

You, sir, have a gift. This gift is the ability to turn everything you touch into something AMAZING! I wish I didn't have to work so I could have gone and see the armor. It's looks truely amazing.
Bolter, because it's much more likely to be makeable by most people, doesn't have mechanical parts to mess about with, and it's a very iconic addition to a costume (you can do an excellent commissar just with a coat, a hat, and a half decent boltpistol). From what I gathered from this thread a chainsword is much more complex and probably requires you to have a bolter or boltpistol as part of the costume anyway.
Aye, I would vote on the bolter. As cool as the chainsword is, I think that more people will be able to create a bolter. I would like to say that you should do the chainsword right after
Well, I am fairly sure I could make the chainsword about 1/2 the wieght it is now.
The first one( and only) chainsword I built was much a more "how the hell am I going to make this work?!?!" project then it was a well planned out project.
I have a lot of ways to improve the build.
To be fair ,I will be frank though, the price to make a chainsword is higer becouse you will have to be buying more things then the bolter.
Also there are no lights or anything that needs to be sodering in the bolter...
Perhapse a Mod could put up a poll on the thread?
"Bolter or chainsword tutorial " and run it for like 15 days?
So far Bolter is way ahead. I posted on a few webpages asking and it's like 15 to 8 in favor of the Bolter...

Your SoB armour looks great!
I love the banner on your converted sister.
Im not a fan of the bolter and chainsword combo for some reason, its not the model, its just me.
keep up the good work and I would like to say a Bolter tutorial would be great!
Vae victis (IPA /wai wiktiːs/) is Latin for "Woe to the vanquished (ones)" or also "Woe to the conquered (ones)". (This is the plural form—the singular is Vae victo if the conquered is masculine, Vae victae if the conquered is feminine.)
Dude, do NOT scare me like that... bad enough I had one misspelling aready on the seals....
Yeah, I want to make one of her, but I need a IG powerfist to do it, the SM ones are to big :(
Man I wish they would make some plastic SoB models, make my life so much easier.
My apologies Finnlock . . . You can blame Graham McNeill for this. What's that? GW not getting their facts right? NO!
But yeah, Vae Victus is the ship the 4th company of Ultramarines use in his books.
And sadly yes plastic SoB would rock, but due to the fact the they are female they will be consigned to being a 'Cult' army. Played by those hard enough to carry around a 3000+ point army made of solid metal. Lol
While taking a break from the bolter I begain work on a servitor skull, it's a plastic skull I got at a craft store for the base. Still a WIP, not finished , still got details to add, but I think this will be the basic shape..maybe I'll add an arm/pincer if I find something I like.
So, I got an other skull, this one is styrofoam and I started work on it tonight. The one advantage is it's light wieght, but the detail is less. These WIP pics are done in strong lighting.
Holly molly! That servo skull looks awesome.
But for some reason the spikes remind me of borg implants from star trek, I don't know why but they just do.
Desided to update the Iron Halo on the back pack. Did a little bit of work tonight on it, repositioned the two longer spikes to the bottom and added two smaller ones in between. Still needs some bulking up on the bottom and I need a base to make it sit up higher on the backpack.
This is how it looked before it was painted...I was never 100% happy with it and I made the backpack as a back-up because I wasn't going to be able to finish the back pack I wanted to make.
And here is a view from the front.
I hope it will look more like an Iron Halo from the mini's now...
Thanks. WOW! Those servo-skulls are awesome. I think the second one should be a medic-skull. That bit poking out of the eye looks like a syringe to me.
Great stuff, I really love what you did with the Halo. As per the skulls I would ask the person who would be carrying it what they thought as personally I would go for detail on something like this over weight, but then again that is just me.
i would love some super detailed post on airsoft bolter constuction i have the same pos gun laying around here an was pondering turning it into a bolter
Well, I have been terribly uninspired on working on projects these last few weeks.
I have things I need to make and 2 costumes I must to finish for Dragon*con
I just need to work up the motivation to get my ass in gear. Well I started.
Here are two very early WIP pieces.
1st is a Inquisitor's pistol based on this image. I like the look and vibe of an gothic/vintage laspistol/ artisan weapon.
Here is an early concept of what I'm looking to do.
Note the skull and eagle details. I knew these things would come in handy.
Next up is an Inquisitor's Hammer...
I think I will be rebuilding head..seems to short to me. maybe if I build up the ends somemore...
Finnlock, I would say that if you heftied up the shaft a bit, and made the head longer/wider (depending how you look at it ) Basically making it more to the proportions of a 'T', then I think it would look a lot better. =]
Here's my thought on the haft of the hammer - I don't think it's necessarily the thickness that's the issue. I think the bigger problem is that it just looks like PVC pipe. I don't mean that in a perjorative way, as I know you (of all people) can decorate it up just fine. But it looks like it's purpose is to be a pipe. Think of the handle of a common wood axe. Even without the head, it is recognizable as an axe handle. What can you do to the haft to make it recognizable as the handle of a weapon even without having the head of the weapon on there? I'm sure you already do this, but what details are there on historical warhammers that you can translate to this?
This is a bad time of year for me, working in retail is hell the last two months of the year.
I am starting to learn that Mr. Finnlock(working at walmart, started in september.)
I am NOT lookingforward to thursday night/friday morning. I work overnight and the overnights have the worst job on black friday at walmart...we do...EVERYTHING at mine...

I feel your pain. I've worked a lot of decembers selling GWproducts and videogames. The general feeling is that I'm helping Santa hold down the baby Jesus so Mammon can sodomise him properly.
Interesting new pistol. Sort of a home brew lasgun? I like where it's going.
The hammer looks pretty sweet too. The head is a bit tall for my liking, but once you add some details, build out the front and back, it should look good I think.
The shaft just needs some texture, from what I remember of the GW power hammers and ancient warhammers. The ancient ones always seemed kinda boring to me, much more like just a big hammer... with some spikes sometimes.
Weird, thats almost identical to a laslock sketch I made. It uh...for the record...uh...kinda might need a thumb tongue on the hammer though. You know...so you can pull it back.
I was going through my photos and realized I never posted any pics of the changes I made to the Laspistol with holster I was making. I did this as a test around the time I was painting the Bolter for the SoB armor.
Old paint
It's mostly a paint scheme change with a few other touches. Still not 100% done, and as I look at it I can think of some changes I'd like to make...
The white is definitely too clean. But also I think the font is a bit too random. Maybe if it was more like classic calligraphy? No idea if that is in your wide repertoir of abilities or not. =p
I don't know that there's anything I can add that hasn't been said already, but massive kudos to you. This is the single coolest fan project I have ever seen.
Looking pretty good. I think you can do better on the "MORTIS" tho. The letters don't seem spaced quite right.
The new pistol looks cool. I like the finger guard. Are you going to integrate top of the grip with the "hammer" part of the gun? The angle is much better! (btw)
And the paint on the grip is looking good. I likle all the swirly bits.
When I look at it I can't help but think of the Luger with the way the pistol grip comes back that far. Most handhelds only angle back slightly. I quite like it. Keep up the amazing work.
Well seems nerf is catching on. Check out these new nerf water guns... Looks like a few simple mods and you have a very nice bolt pistol and bolter to me!

Well, well. Seems these are out state side now. I picked the two at target for 14.99 and 19.99 each. they are not in the nerf section but in the outdoor/poor isle.
Here it is bolter to bolter. The mag is the same one I used to make my bolter so you have a frame of reference.
This one shows both, the mag in the pistol is the type I used to make the bolt pistols. Both mags fit into the guns very well.
What's interesting is there is no trigger on this one..It's pump action only. The pistol is battery opperated, which makes it cooler IMO.
It's a good size however and will make a great base for a bolter and the size of the pistol makes it a good mode for both a bolter and bolt pistol.
All in all, these are very good pieces and the pistol is outright fun.
Hey, how about an update? Been a bit dry here, so I figured it was time to post something new...
Update on the servo skull, gave it some more detailing and a lick of paint. I also tried out an idea I had for a haning purity type seal thing from the underside to see about disguising how I'm going to attach it to the armor.
So please disregard the hanging scroll as it is only a place holder.
lol, looks really good, and it is alwyas astonishing me what paint can achieve to mere materials like bottlescrews as shown on some positions of that skull...

Okay, so here is my final take on the Las-lock...Though it would be cool for the Inquisitors weapon.... Next will be to make a holster for it.
Really nice stuff. It's good to see a prop builder put some thought into what sort of details a life-size artefact might have , as a straight scale-up of a 28mm weapon can look a bit bland.
somehow the barrel of the plasma pistol looks a tad to short for my taste...the general shape tho is realy cool looking and the energy effect works like a charm^^
as i see it, if this is a space marine pllasma pistol then the front end with the exhaust (currently only sketched on) should be slightly longer...as is it looks a bit boxy for me, i understand that the caps atm are only standins for the general feel..., but don´t take just my word for it as i have not many plasma pistols in my mini collection anyway^^
