That looks fantastic! The light gray showing through the air vent holes is a bit disturbing but makes sense given that the sooty black is coming from the very end of the weapon and from the outside.

It's a small LED light with an orange plastic bit from a nerf gun glued onto it. Over that it matte clear tape which is put in strips then cut to give it an uneven
edge/texture. When the light is turned on the magic happens, aww yeah.

Did a little more work while waiting for things to dry... I added to the back section of the gun. I think it looks much better now. I also added a design element to the right side of the gun, the wing isn't painted and might not be the final style I go with, but I wanted something there to show what I was driving at.
Thoughs are welcome.
The old back...note the large drop off at the end..
The new back, much more intergated feel now I think
New design element. The skull was a full 3d piece I trimed down to be as flush as I could make it. It still pokes out a bit more then I would like.

Well, seeing how the guy who was going to laser cut a blade for me flaked out I have had to improvise for D*con...
This is a Nerf sword i have hadkicking around. I did a test paint on the blade to see if I could make it work.
I wish I knew what types of paint to use to make it more durable so I could make a sheath for it.
Anyone have any ideas or know what they use on LARP weapons?
Anyway, the WIP..

Post by: The Good Green
The paint job on that blade looks great. Have you worked with any sealers? I know they usually make things kinda glossy but I don't know all of them.
The combi-flamer is awesome too, btw. The extra embellishments on the sides really make it sing.
On a more critical note, while the one side of the hand guard looks cool, the other side looks surprisingly bare. Also the cable is too long for my taste, too much of a loop. I'm more use to the power swords that just have a wire running up the blade, stuck to it the whole way.
26673
Post by: Finnlock
Yeah, the tube was there from when I used it before (see 1st post of this thread)And yes, you are right, it is just kinda looped around all willy-nilly.
I didn't want to go crazy working on it only to have the paint chip off 1/2 way through :(
It currently has a few ( i think 6 or 7 ) layers of sealer on it, but the foam flexs so much it wants to crack.. :(
I guess no one will gte bopped on the head with it at the con :( :( :(
9217
Post by: KingCracker
O was gunna mention the flexy-ness of those Nerf swords, as we have a couple different nerf weapons around here, that sword is the one I have. Its good fun, but good luck keeping that nice paint job on there Looking really good though, youve got a knack for this stuff

Acryllic Paints. (liquitex, GW, etc) as they will flex some. to seal a clear latex paint, or possibly Elmers.
7150
Post by: helgrenze
Or you could try something like Liquid Latex which maintains its flexability. The site has sample kits that should be just right for your purposes.
26673
Post by: Finnlock
Hmm, That Latex stuff is cool. I'll have to check that out...
Not sure I'll get to it before D*con, but worht checking out.
26673
Post by: Finnlock
Finally made the front piece for the right side....
Thoughts?
8689
Post by: pox
The problem with liquid latex is it will pull off quite easliy, even in thick layers. regular acrylic will pull off it it stretches too much.
If you're going the cheapest route possible, I'd get some PAX paint, or make some. its basically liquitex acrylic paint mixed with pros-aide to give it elasticity. you can buy the pros-aide and liquitex paint and mix it yourself, or purchase it pre-mixed. Just remember to fully dust it down with a colorless powder when you're done painting with it, or the sword will be forever sticky!
Do you have access to an airbrush? I'd recommend silicone airbrush makeup paint if you do. This will give you full coverage, with minimal wear and tear, even when brushing the sword up against anything. (like a sheath.)
If no airbrush, another option would be to use alcohol makeup paint, it will dye the foam itself (along with anything else it touches.) I use it when I need the make-up or prop to never, ever come off. the good stuff can only be thinned and removed with 99% isopropyl alcahol. The downside is cost, a one oz. bottle is around 12 bucks, plus you need the 99% isopropyl alchahol, which can be pricey if your local drugstore doesn't carry it in that strength.
(as an added bonus, you could also use the alcohol paint and an airbrush for the two-point combo!)
Good luck though, your work is really, really good, and I hope to see more!
26673
Post by: Finnlock
Wow, thanks for the imput pox, I'll have to look into that after D*con!
Of coruse I want to do the blade the way I intended with a sheet of clear acrylic, but good to know for the future!

Those costumes are really amazing. I looked through a lot of the pics of the parade and your group is one of the strongest and I think the most impressive amongst the masses. It kind of reminds me of that poster of the space marine facing a halo soldier. Epic win for Grimdarkness.
Though, the water bottles really sell it. Maybe, for next year, design some camel water bags into the back packs.

That grey knight costume is amazing! My only complaint, and it is a small one, and would help the costume...
Since the helmet is a wee bit larger, and there isn't the space for it to fall properly on the head, you can see his forehead in the picture. He should pop some hard colored plastic in there to cover that up, but amg that's one amazing costume.

No, I just used the grip from the vulcan and the ammo belts. It does have sound effects however.
My 1st plan was yo use a vulcan, but the realities where it was going to take a lot of work to mod it to work poperly and look right. the vulcan would work well for a imp gaurd style heavy bolter, not so much for the marines or sisters. the bottome feed is a problem.

So you mentioned up thread that you use foamed PVC for costume armor (and presumably for your awesome props) I'm in the planning stages of making my own sisters costume, and was wondering if you'd mind sharing some details. Like what thickness(es) do you use? How do you shape it, and what do you use for a heat source? What type of paint (or brand) and sealant do you use. And finally, do you have a recommendation for online suppliers for your materials? You've made some awesome stuff, and I'd rather learn how to make this stuff the right way.
Thanks

I took a clip from a buzz bee dart gun, it was almost perfect in it's stock form and basicaly just needed some paint.

Blargh...I'm sure you all are tired of me posting crap from Dragoncon, but here is another video! ( if anyone is checking)
this one is at 3:47 , it's quick but you can see the flame effect of the back pack better then any of the others.
the whole video is very well done.

Thanks!
Because this year we got a lot more press( mostly due to my upgrade in GFs) I need to figure out how to top these armors...the Ork I think needs a Powa Klaw and I think I need to redue a lot of the Cannoness armor, mainly the legs, robe and arms, possably the backpack too...

Amazing work, mate. I also like how you act as armourer to all the SoBs at the con. Also - "Upgrade in GFs"? Her costume you mean? Or actual GF?
