Sorry Void, I'm just not a fan of the smurfs. As for why I picked the BA dex... Mostly because beyond being a fun army to make I would like it to be competative. I really wanted to use the Black Templars to be honest. I love the idea of mixing the Shields in with scouts that look like spartans and greeks.

I would have gone with the iron hands if it was going to be heavy support...heavy. I think for the most part its going to end up being alot of troops, almost swarmy. I like raven guard alot too but it just didn't fit for me personally.

They aren't mad about machines and they enjoy the use of human auxillaries, which the Raven Guard eschew, preferring to work unobserved by "all save their foes".

i agree with you mr.nids.my first thought of a codex for this army would of been The templars too...but after looking into the BA codex a lil bit more there were more fitting i think....but it dont mean we cant mix the two together to make our fan dex.....
And another Question are we making the shields a lost legion or are the just a successor chapter i am so confused about that

I was never a fan of using the two lost legions blank as a way of making a new legion/Primarch. Unknown Primarchs, sure, take the BR. Unless..of course.. that means you're going to read C.S. Goto's crap. Multi-laser wielding marines surfing tanks that backflip and change into different tanks mutliple times before returning to their "original" form. Oh and Deathwatch allying with an Eldar. Yeah, the Alien-hunter and the Alien. :(

If we're making a fandex and not using the BA 'dex, then I'll just be a show-off and point out I've done a Fandex before. ( for boasting) You can find said fandex in my created threads section on ma profile.
Now, really back on-topic. Somehow, I don't feel like they should be Blood Angels successors.. it just doesn't "feel" right. The codex - yeah, sure, no problem with using it, but making them BA successor just seems a bit off.

The chapter is going to be a Lost Primarch Chapter for the sake of fluff. This leaves us WIDE open for alot of fun with fluff. As for the codex I am using the BA codex for games and armylists. If at some point the Black Templar dex gets updated and is more what I'm looking for I will switch to that. The main reason I wanted the BA dex is also for the fact that the BAs are extremely loyal to the emperor and are extremely vicious. Especially when the red thirts or black rage takes hold. The Shields are meant to be killers plain and simple. They are born and raised for nothing else, and their loyalty to the Emperor of mankind is infalliable.
@vignor- I like those ideas for successors.
@WM360- I love the unknown feel, thats one of the reasons I like the lost primarch idea. Leaves alot up in the air.
Oh and do me a favor guys, remember what this thread is all about and please don't get caught up in little debates. This is supposed to be fun and informational! You all have given me more inspiration than I ever expected- 11 pages and counting. Thanks again and lets keep it fun ok?

yeah i think he is going to have to go bye bye too ..unless we can think of a way for there to be a reason for a death company and shield priesthood...
Maybe they have a geneseed condition, that the older the marine is the more likely they are to get it; their bodies toughen and they become stronger - but their bodies cannot take this kind of rapid evolution/change so they eventually die - but they get to go to battle one last time - which would make it feasable to include small units (10?) of DC. Lots of 'em would be silly.
Sanguinary Priests could basically be Chaplains and Apothecaries rolled into one - meaning that they have Furious Charge because they are insighted by the Chaplain and FnP because of the apothecary side. This'd be interesting for conversion.
It would mean that normal Chaplains wouldn't really have a place in the army, though. Unless you use them in Deathcompany to say that the chaplains going to their death too so don't care about healing their already tougher brothers (FnP).
HUM they could suffer from the gorgon curse they could slowly calcify from the inside out until there statues....that would just be Dumb...but stil we could work out some things from Hercules who killed himself by setting himself ablaze...maybe the primarch constable-combusted some how that still sounds a bit unbelievable but that some how affected the rest of the shields by just feeling the horror of that...idk im at a lost

but it would involve the use of shields o'o or columns or obelisk since to move one of the slabs of the annulus you would need 12 space wolves and the company captains can carry the title of Strategoi which was the spartan rank of captain and could be like the wolves warlords and we could even do i a war horse proxy like that of the thunder wolves....

Aye I dont know i dont if te shields would have a dog like Cerberus creature or have a hydra reptile monster...its hard to decide...Here is what Ive came up with to explain the proxy of fenris wolves...When Our Primarch was going through the task set before Him by the Kings of the planet he had to slay noazgroth a eight headed reptilian monster noazgroth was the largest and oldest of the creatures known as hydroxs She stood the height of a reaver titan and weighed almost as much..our primarch set off into the marsh lands for two weeks he marched with out stoping for rest or to eat and on the 15th day he came upon the entrance of the cavern were noazgroth slept and when he went in to confront the beast he could not rouse it from its slumber nor kill it in its sleep so he returned to the outside and sought shelter to rest and for 3 weeks the beast slumbered but during the 3rd day of the week the beast awoke our primarch began battle with noazgroth and for nine days they raged with fury and violence so tremendous the most of the caverns collapsed Around them until the 9th day when our primarch slew the last head off the beast the battle ended in complete silence and with his sword the primarch slaughtered the beast and moved it from its death bed to find a clutch of a dozen eggs most had been crushed but two had survived with no harm and the primarch gatherd them along with one the heads of the hydrox and returned to civilization ..upon his arrival the kings were astonished to find the young man had survived his charge with slaying the hydrox and held him with high esteem until they learned he brought back two of the hell spawns eggs with him and ordered him to destroy them but he refused with the answer "if i ever face an enemy that is ever stronger or tougher then there mother it will be a dark time for all of us"and after two years the Hydrox eggs hatched and the primarch raised them to be fierce and loyal body guards of the king....So what do you all think of this....and When a initiate wishes to join the elite Hydra guard latter in his career with the shields he must retreat into the marsh lands and return with two hydrox eggs he stole from a slumbering mother and raise them...

I was originally thinking of a few less likely idea's:
They are created from traitor geneseed (very unlikely, but perhaps an experiment or something?)
21st founding sounds cool but not the traitor geneseed, i would say they are made from ultrasmurfs (what thier roman and we are greek?)

I kinda stopped contributing because:
a) I suck at making fluff. That's why I play DA and BA. Hawk Lords is pushing my comfort zone.
b) The all caps yelling conversations are very off putting. Inside voices people.
3) (yeah i changed from letters to numbers, what about it?) You guys seem to have it well under control. To many chefs in the kitchen kinda thing.
I will fully admit that it is partialy my fault this thread is losing momentum. After 4 days of 12 hr shifts I have had no time or energy to contribute myself. @vig- What did you have in mind with the tons of dreads and termis? I have been leaning more to the idea of being more assault oriented and such but I am up for ideas.
i was thinking of a extreme close quarter Juggernaut fighting company using dread drop pods and terminators to deep strike to drop them into the thick of the heaviest fighting
Interesting! I had forgotten about that option I am def going to incorporate the Sang guard wrist mounted bolters and such on certain troops, how about for fluff's sake they are "Gladius Pattern" Weapons?

Yes void. Fleet based was my preference. That way they can have some crazy stuff happen to their homeworld rendering it uninhabitable/destroyed (thats where you come in vignor ) I love fleet based chapters personally, it gives you crazy freedom fluff wise too.

hahaha a good majority of the shields die because of robute being a chicken and retreating up to his ship and bombarding the planet but in the after math poor void becomes tainted by chaos and survives and remains undetected until one day dun dun dun

it has to do with the city thing again but each city has a comander who is like one of the gods, and hades (being the ahole that he is) refuses to fight robute, but after hearing that he "killed" promethion he gose into beserk rage taking his small company to strike vengance but gets caught in a warpstorm he has to wait a while BUT when they emmerge from the warp he finds out that fulgrim steals his kill he gose REALY REALY REALY RAGE on chaos and during the black crusade hes all like "IMA KILL YOU ABADON" but gets put into a dread cause hes SOOOO OLD and he got shot.
Finally caught up - 14 pages! Like the idea of 300 (3 companies) going off into the Eye of Terror. If you continue with BA, your DC could be representative of this historic group. If not (or alternatively?) - mark 3 companies (maybe 1st, 2nd and 3rd?) specially to represent this part of your history. It wouldn't need to be an event that happens continuously - just a change in style and/or colour to three companies in recognition of the act (a bit like how Deathwing came to be different coloured...). Just a thought

I think maybe new wargear would be more appropriate.
Like, perhaps, "Emperor's Shield" - a piece of wargear that is basically a combat shield that isn't useless and gives a 5++ save (4+ if you really must) for +5-10pts depending on whether it's 5+ or 4+.

Only 3 out of 300 of them fell in the Great Crusade. Their names are eternally etched on the Emperors Breastplate.
And what have these mightiest of mighty warriors somehow been doing for 10,000 years? Sitting on their asses guarding the Emperor that no one is ever going to try and attack in a million zillion years. Atleast, not until the Golden Throne breaks down, killing the Emperor and destroying the Astronomican. This will result in warp travel for the Imperium becoming nigh-impossible, and the denizens of the warp materializing FRIGGIN' EVERYWHERE, DUDE because only the Emperor's psychic might was keeping the brunt of the evilz at bay. Hrm well then lol i am so confussed whats the deal with the custodes?....Ive been reading the Ultramarines Omnibus the past few days and every time the Codex Astarte is mentioned in the book it seems like a giant damper to military Operations And Heroics IE not refueling a Thunderhawk while its hot...And never charge a bolter nest with no less then 10 marines...What a bore .....

yep. Thats why My chapter made its own tactics, and its own stratgies called the Books of Obsidian.
The Shields Took to the stars in earnest to protest the codex Astarte in the pursuit of of the Lord Commander of the Imperium and they followed pursuit until they found the ultramarines and alpha legion in the galactic east on the planet of Eskrador and upon the planets surface a battle boiled between the forces of Alpha legion And the Ultramarines the Shields descended on the killing fields where brothers of the same father met in arms of fire and sword as promethion sent three companies to herald Robute and Alpharius and for weeks the shields were fired upon by both alpha legion and the ultramarines who thought that the shields have gone rouge and many fell to traitors and brothers both despite constants hailing to Robute he ended the battle by retreating to his ships in orbit to bombard the planet where 3 companies remained stranded as the bombardment blasted i and cracked the planets crust were by the invisible hand of the Emperor not a single Shield who remained on the planet wasn't harmed except for one the captain of 3rd company insert voids 40k greek name here was wounded when eight spears of obsidian were blasted from the earth and pierced him and sheared his legs from his body and as his life blood poured on the soil a forbidding spirit reviled its self to him offering damnation for his own salvation and he accepted as the daemon restored his shattered body......just pushing some idears out there....And to give some people a hint to what i done this week end i went and seen a hero of mine ad some of may recognize his voice that is if your cool enuff hahaha

I was giving the history of the Adeptus Custodes along with the most prrobable future of 40k history that GW will never release. It had nothing to do with the Shields'. The images did, they are there as modelling examples, mostly for their weaponry, but I'm sure there's plenty of other things to pick up from the pics.
I love the pics personally. I made a chain-spear of sorts that I will get some pics up of on the other thread and maybe on here if anyone wants one. I love the idea behind the guns on the spear but I'm not sure. Most of them end up looking like either a spear with a gun bolted on or like on the first one a gun bolted to a stick with a knife bolted on the front of that. I want to try to make it look as seamless as posible.
Hello again friends! I had 3 packages waiting for me when I went to visit family at my mothers house recently. Package A and B were the DKoK and 3 superheavy tanks as well as 4 other smaller tanks and the big ol' Apoc hardcover. The third package was considerably smaller but I wont lie I was WAY more excited to see that one! Inside, as promised was a multitude of custom made bits from none other than BLACKHAND himself! Included in this mini box of wonders were shields- for obvious uses! Arms to hold the shields and some minotaur shoulderpads for yet another project I have been toying with for some time now, I'll get to that later. I know what you are thinking, was there more in the box?! YES! Mr. HAND even sent along the moulds for the 2 styles of shields (yes there are 2) the arms and the pads! I can not tell you how excited I am to get some assembly going and to at last get some pics up!

what would you say to neophytes being the pilots and drivers of the shields equipment i think it would be interesting to see scouts popping there heads out of a land raider...i know scout cannot use these as transports but it dosent mean they cant drive if people jump you for and try to throw a flag just say hay there hoplites and the tank is the only Armour they need....O.0
40k Background might not be the best place for the following rules I've come up with, but oh well. Keeping it all in one place makes it easy, eh?

Tonius Niddius, Lord of the Shields - 275 WS: 6 BS: 5 S: 4 T: 4 W: 4 I: 5 A: 4 LD: 10 Sv: 2+
Unit type: Independant character Unit composition: 1 (unique) Wargear: Artificer armour, Storm Shield, Bolt pistol, Frag grenades, Meltabombs,
Purgator - This ancient Halberd has been passed down for centuries amongst the senior master's of the Chapter, for the Shields are traditional in the extreme. It is practice for the oldest - or as some would argue, most experienced, - warrior amongst their number to wield this artifact beyond prize that dates back millennia to the early days of the chapter. As the currently most senior member of the chapter, it falls to Tonius to wield it in battle once more. The long blade of this weapon runs down almost the whole length of the polearm, starting with a curved tip at the top of the shaft. Made of forgotten metals and crackling with dazzling blue energy, Purgator has tasted the blood of millions of Heretics, dissidents, Xenos and Traitors. It is even reputed to have struck a fallen Primarch at the hands of the long-deceased Master Neverus and to have been forged by The Father - Primarch of the Shields. Purgator is a Master-Crafted two-handed Power weapon that adds +2 to Tonius' strength characteristic in assault. In addition, in the first round of any assault, Tonius gains +D6 attacks as he swings it in a massive arc, able to catch several opponants at once.
Helm of The Father - This great relic was worn by The Father himself, and to fall under this helm's gaze is to be judged by the Primarch. No brother in the presence of this artifact will dare take a step back while he still draws breath. Tonius, and all models in the same unit as him, are fearless.
Special rules: Inspirational - Tonius is a great leader of men, instilling courage into the hearts of those he commands even in the most desperate of situations, compelling them to fight harder. Where he treads, warriors rush to both defend and fight for him, even at the cost of their own lives. All friendly-models (including allies!) within 12" of Tonius are stubborn.
Options: Tonius Niddius may replace his Artificer armour with the Mantle of Krius for +5pts. Krius is a legendary icon, the only warrior besides The Father to have a greater record of success than Tonius. The Mantle of Krius is a suit of Terminator armour.

Jedediah Storm, Chief Librarian of the Emperor's Shields
Psychic powers: Smite Might of the Ancients Null zone Ward of Protection - This power is used at the beginning of the controlling players' turn. If the Psychic test is passed, Jedediah and any unit he has joined benefit from a 4+ invulnerable save until the end of the opponants next turn. Gift of Speed - This power is used at the beginning of the controlling players' turn. If the Psychic test is passed, Jedediah and any unit he has joined will gain the Fleet Universal Special Rule and have +1 Initiative until the end of the controlling players' turn. Destructor - This power is used at the start of the controlling players' shooting phase and it counts as firing a ranged weapon in all respects. It has the following profile: Range - 12" S - 10 AP - 2 Assault 1 Imbue Fury - This power is used at the start of the controlling players' assault phase, before any charges are declared. If the Psychic test is passed, Jedediah and any unit he is with gain the Furious Charge Universal Special Rule until the end of that assault phase.
Special Rules: Master Psyker - Jedediah Storm may use up to three Psychic powers per turn, including his Force Weapons' special ability to instantly kill enemies.

First company are the "Kings of War" and the total fighting strength of the first is 300 warriors.

Yep, got you all in there - the original contributers.. oh, and Krius, who doesn't really exist. If anyone else wants to be a Special Character/be mentioned in the book, just say so. But only 1-2 more Special characters after all them ^.
~~ As for the fluff on Atrum Inritus I mentioned earlier, I'm thinking of something like Tzeentch took interest in him, turning its will upon his mortal mind. Though he resisted, refusing with all his might, he could not hope to stand up to the might of Tzeentch. Jedediah Storm, Chief Librarian, hastily erected wards and chanted powerful incantations of purity and righteousness. With this new power, Atrum found within himself the inner-strength to shrug-off the call of the Ruinous Powers. However, there was a small part of him that was curious at the power that could be gained.. curious of what it would be like to serve only himself. Tzeentch, capricous and unknowable, decided to take that part of Atrum's mind, and made it physical. A copy of Atrum, bolstered by dark power to insane levels, who was completely against everything The Original stood for. These two identical yet so different beings, one holy, one not, fought a titanic battle before the entire third company. Though Atrum had much courage, his "twin" had been born with the strength of the warp. A killing blow would merely slow him down; a hit from him felt like an Autocannon. Atrum could not win, and was cast down, his body ravaged and severely damaged. Yet still he fought on, firing with pistol in hand as a last defiant act of faith. But as quickly as it had been born, the copy was whisked away by eldritch powers. Despite that near-fatal conflict, Atrum refused to be interred into a Dreadnought, insisting he was not badly wounded enough. Though it took many months, he eventually returned back to fighting-form. Though he had suffered dearly in the ordeal with his "copy", he came out of it - his faith had been tested to the utmost and he had not been found wanting. Although it pained him to say it, Tzeentch had actually helped him. It had removed all doubt about his faith, about the Emperor. About Mankind's manifest destiny to rule the universe. The very thing that sought to corrupt him had made him uncorruptable.
And since that day, he has vowed to destroy the copy of himself that gives him a bad name. On one world, he is a hero of the Imperium. On another, he leaves none left alive after a slaughter to speak of their hatred of him.

Although, I'm at a complete loss as for how to do Atrum as a character.. Naturally, I'll start with the basic Captain profile, but as I feel this character should represent my style of "warfare" and how I'd picture myself as a [horrifically wounded] Space Marine. Always did like power swords, mind you..
Perhaps, on account of bionics; S5 and T5? In addition, I'm pretty sure he'll be fearless.

I'm also going to make Samus and Vignoris upgrade characters for the Honour Guard squad. Bowmen - anything with a gun (everything)
Well, I could design a special character for you, Ash, if you wanted.
Also, I'm thinking that perhaps the company lay out is like this:
First Company - Veteran company - The Astartans - ~300 Space Marines - Captain Garus
Second Company - Battle company - ??? - ~100 Space Marines - Captain ???
Third Company - Battle company - The Incorruptable - ~100 Space Marines Captain Inritus
Fourth Company - Battle company - ??? - ~100 Space Marines - Captain ???
Fifth "
Sixth "
Seventh - armoured company - The Ironhides - Assortment of Heavy armour - Captain ???
Basically, not giving two about the little blue book. One extra large Veteran company - allowing for 6 Elite choices in-game - Battle companies - no effect in-game - Seventh and eighth company - Armoured companies - Allows for 6 Heavy support choices - Nineth and Tenth companies - Scout companies - in-game effect: something to do with Scout Captain Bi'Mek, perhaps? Or maybe two scout squads for every 1 Troop slot.
All that allows for a very elite, very stealthy, or very heavy playstyle. Perhaps, as an army special rule, when making an army list you can choose to either double your number of elites or heavy support slots?
And perhaps, there are no assault squads, as such, but any Tactical squad may replace its standard armament of a boltgun (they shouldn't have pistols! They never did before!) with a CCW and Bolt pistol, and they may also take Jump packs, and if they do then they become Fast Attack.
So potentially we could see a Scout, Tank and Veteran heavy army forming from all this.

Yeah I would like to have a character made for me. That would be extremely helpful. I can try and equip him with a unique weapons like a hammer or something like that.

See I am trying to start a few chapters and get some squads painted so I am buying some bloody angel stuff and some Space Wolf stuff as two chapters the Sword Templars and the Dusk Guard both need some marines :(.
But I will make a character and a 20 men for the Emperor's Shields. Just no veterans just some tactical and assualt squads. And the captain.

Sorry to Ruin it but their is a Starship called a Helios that my Chapter uses. But oh well I can change to fit an Arch Angel's name

I'll use the names of angels. I was fine with it. There are tons of different names. Helios is god of the sun in greek. It doesn't make sense for me to make a Ship Called the Helios in a Mainly Angel Army.
and also i am working on the death company proxy for the shields what would you say to marine androids and a techmarine/Chaplin as an idea for a character...also this is a debatable topic so dont fret to throw your ideas
Well, should this army ever go to tournaments, then I believe it'll be in a counts-as BA capacity. But otherwise, I intend to at some point -with help from you guys- create an actual fandex.

Alright, cool. There's a bunch of cool stuff in there that I forgot I had too. I feel bad that I'll never get anymore carnifex bits (since they're terrible ). That kit is really good.
Alot has happened recently between my 11 month old son almost dying from an allergic reaction and my grandmother dying this morning. Sorry guys but for a little bit here I will be rather busy with things much less fun than the Shields. I will be back.

It's ok Ash, I am still working on the shields when time permits. I got my second AoBR dread in the mail today also. That gives me the pcs I needed to make my converted dread.
Yeah Sorry. Its just when I hear all the bad things in the world it also reminds me how bad the world is and I wish it sometimes would just be a little better and not so sad. sorry to hear about that having a kid almost die is a very very scary experience I had a similar thing when I was working in the summer except the kid started swelling at the neck. I pleaded for them to take him away from the area. But the said he would be fine, they didn't listen and it happened again and we got him out of there. And I deemed them unfit for duty and I took matters into my own hands and sent the kid home, but to hospital first of course.

And for spares and odds and sods check out scribors conversion parts. AMAZING I could literally spend thousands of pounds there, my current projects are numerous but my Pre-Heresy 1k sons using all the Egyptian parts are coming along... Cool eh?
I plan on picking that fellow up at some point for sure! I already picked up some crested helms and such for these guys but if I order again it will have to be for an amount that makes the shipping worth it

I think I will give him a double bladed axe with a Storm Shield and a Astrates Grenade Launcher.

I love the combo of Relic Blade, Storm Shield and Aux 'nade launcher. The ability to smash a Krak or Frag into someone as you charge in is brilliant and often gives you the edge in the fight, not cheap though.

No it is not. Plus a jump pack its a lot of points but it is going to be worth it when he gets into combat.
we'll ive been absent for a week now but ive got to tell you why...i got kicked out of a punk rock show....reason when vignor and the emperors shields went to preform our two songs..HOLY BOLTER STRIPPED DOWN and GOFF ROCKER..emo er's
started to be emo and tried to rush the platform and i showed them the will of the emperor in my boot in there chest hahahaha spnt the night in the slammer but all charges were dropped on account of self defence and the emo's were really just redneck goths but hey whats the differences between emo and country music..a hick with a guitar and a messed up teenager with a piano both wailing about killin themselves...im returning next week with the inquisitional ordo emo...i know its a double post but this is chronicled into the cult of this chapters inspiration for me

Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, I've been thinking about the rules for Scout equivelants.
They'd wear 'Armour of The Aspirant' which would be 4+, naturally. They'd be armed with one of the unique close-combat weapons to the codex; the Honour Blade. Every Aspirant must forge his own, make it his own, and learn the unique style of fighting that comes with it. As the Blade is made of ultra-lightweight metal found only on the home planet of the Shields, in combination with the unique fighting style, they get +1 Initiative in combat when fighting with it. However, the fighting style requires full concentration on becoming one with the Honour Blade, so much so that no other weapon will be useable.
Besides, there's no honour in blowing your enemies' head off with a bolt pistol..
Another idea, similar to the Pain Tokens of the DE.
Army-wide Special Rule:
For Honour, for Glory!
For every unit wiped out in close-combat or vehicle destroyed in a Death or Glory attempt the unit gains one of the following USRs until the end of the game, generated at random as shown on the table by rolling a D6 and applying the result. Re-roll the dice if a result is repeated again for the same unit.
