Ah okay. Well atleast you do use something on your models. Primer gets expensive when you have to buy it every week, so I don't blame you for using walmarts stuff.

@ zadelistol- Until I start painting clean models, I'll keep spending my 98 cents a can.
@ tipios & Limbo- I'll try again as soon as I finish a few other projects I have open. Thanks for distracting me. Ha.
Speaking of distractions, the Vindicator I bought arrived today. It is another "rescue" project for sure. Here it is fresh out of the box:
The good news is that everything is there except for the dozer blade, but I knew this before I bought it and I am ok w/ that. Then I started really looking at it... what a mess! Check this stuff out:
See how it is listing to one side? Here's why:
The track on the (photo) left is lower than the brace for the dozer blade!
If this were a race, the tracks on the (photo) right side would be winning.
That's not GS, it's GLUE.
Wow. I thought I really screwed up this time. Finally got caught on a "good deal". I started getting out my jackhammer and blowtorch, but then *snap* one of the panels came right off. It was superglue!
Yay!
I finished the disassembly in about a minute. The little pile of stuff in the foreground is chunks of superglue. No I am not kidding.
Once I had it disassembled, I promptly put it away because I have other stuff to be focused on right now. This will be a weekend project at some date in the future.
I was able to finish the next squad on the list today. I'm really cranking these out. Only 6 left to go.
My next real focus is going to be the Land Raider. I keep shoving it to the side, it's time I get some work done on it and finish it up.
That's all for tonight. Thanks for reading, and you know I'll be back soon with more Nurgle-infested goodness to share!

Skalk...did I five year old put that vindi together? Superglue=bad stuff...and even then it wasn't put together right.
Though,, thankfully to you it was superglued, easy fixing.
I was horrified when i saw the pics of it..glad it was easy to take a part.
Hmm. i can understand rushing to put a tank together but still, they should have taken the time to put it together right*is now irritated at some peoples ignorance and rush jobs* its a hobby not a race..
Ah, Can't say i blame you about the spray though. I'm assuming this one will take a spray of the cheap stuff too?

Wow, that's a messed up vindicator o.O Are you going to replace the lost dozer blade? Maybe something like you did with the land raider maw, loots of big teeth in the front.
I think your troops would look better with alittle extra paint on them, ecspecially the ones with the old/berzerker backpacks, they are very green.
Kinda hard to see in this picture, but I painted the "rods" on the "wings" on the backpacks http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/157153-Khorne%20Berzerkers.html?m=2, think it breaks up the red nicely
Anyway, looking forward to the land raider!

@ Vladsimpaler- Thanks for the compliment and encouragement! Look for more RT models when I complete my ML and LC Havoc teams!
@ zadelistol- I'm not sure, I bought it from an online store that moves a lot of used stuff. If it had been regular model glue (like the last Rhino I rescued) then I would have been in trouble. It's s shame that some people just hammer stuff together, but at the same time ignorance is not necessarily stupidity. We have the benefit of wisdom through experience. And as we both know from the countless mistakes we have made along the way, wisdom is something you gain immediately after you needed it. Ha. And yes, this is destined for a nice coat of cheap paint. In fact every single model you've seen on this blog since I first started painting Death Guard again in November has the same brand of paint on it. My opinion is that "primer" is overrated, and a decent base coat of somehting flat (white, gray, black) is really all that is necessary.
@ Limbo- Aaaggh, you caught me! Yes, you're absolutely right and honestly I know that I've been cutting a few corners lately. The philosophy was to get as many done to a passable tabletop standard and then when things slow down go back and pick out a few detail bits (and yes, I actually do that) but much like when Yggdrasil called me out for not drilling the barrels, I am shamed to have been caught displaying unfinished models as "finished". I'm going to apply more time to the squad I am working on currently and go back to the last 3 squads I've done recently and ensure they are up to standard w/ the rest of the army. Like zadelisto said:
zadelistol wrote: its a hobby not a race..
...indeed.
@ Courtsloth- 3rd Edition? You insult me, sir! This is 2nd Edition all the way! Just kidding around. No, it really is 2nd ed, but I appreciate the compliment. I started this in 1997 as a small detachment to a much larger Black Crusade force. I have Night Lords, World Eaters, Iron Warriors, Black Legion, and Alpha Legion from my original force, and I have a start on a Word Bearers HQ and Troops that have been patiently waiting for me to stop wasting time with the misguided monotheistic Death Guard and return to embrace the true Glory of Chaos Undivided. I figure if they can wait 10,000 years for Lorgar to return, they can wait for me to finish a few other projects first.
No pic updates tonight. I'm working late and I don't have anything to share right now. When I get home I'll be working on my current squad which is only a 6 man team, the Aspiring Champion was finished long ago. These models may get broken up as "filler" for my Havocs, or may wind up as a squad, I don't know for now. All I know for sure is I'm drilling the barrels, painting the backpacks, and giving the armor a little Goblin Green drybrush for a fake highlight effect.
This weekend is looking like I'll have some time to dedicate to the Land Raider. No promises though. But whatever happens, I'm going to keep hammering away at this and more updates are on the way! Thanks for reading!

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ FITZZ- Hey welcome back! The Vindicator is really in my mind a lot right now. I can't tell you how hard it is to not go in there right now and start putting it back together. I'm not going to allow myself to do that until I have the Land Raider finished. I mean the main gun on the Vindicator is WAY more awesome than anything the LR has, and would be completely devastating against a Horde army like Daichallar's Orks... but no, I started the Land Raider first and it needs to be done.
@ BlutEisenRegel & Chump_Nuggets- If you think it looks bad in those pics, wait until you see it after I get done with it. Another weapons of the Imperium corrupted and turned back against them.
Ok so I was wrong, an update with pics. I was talking w/ Daichallar the other day and told him how few squads I had left and that I was focusing on finishing them, he said that I really need 100 Plague Marines (sarcastically of course) and told me to get to work on a 750 pt list because apparently our gaming group is going to be playing in a Tourney at our FLGS (local being 30 miles from here...) and I'm going to be playing. I've done some thinking on this and have decided that I'm going to put together the most absolutely brutal list I can get away with. After a bit of research I found that Metla Guns and Missile Launchers are very popular with the Tourney folks. So here we go, my newest project:
RT models all the way, using old Plasma Cannons counts as Missile Launchers. I went with the old Plasma Cannons as Missile Launchers because (1) I have a lot of them, (2) no one will really notice the difference anyway, and (3) because I already have this guy painted up and he was one of the first models I pained for my Death Guard back in 1997. It would be nice to see him back on the field again.
I already have 3 Plague Marines w/ Meltas, this will make 6 (2 in each squad).
Nothing else is getting done until I have these finished.
That's it for tonight (for real this time), thanks everyone for posting, I'll be back soon with more gifts from Father Nurgle!

Skalk.....I am pretty sure I said "It isn't like you need 100 plague marines." In reference to you actually finishing that land raider. Also, don't get to attached to that Vindicator, I can't hurt that Land Raider at all from range, but I can easily paste that Vindicator with my Def Koptas. So the moral of this story is, finish that Land Raider.
....also, another one would really be a PITA for me.

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ Moltar-
@ Limbo- I hope I can offer advice / inspiration!
I haven't made a lot of progress on the Death Guard lately, my motivation is completely gutted. It's no single factor, it's more of the "snowflake effect", one flake doesn't take down the tree but the tree still falls.
Game-wise I've taken some pretty brutal beatings and can't remember the last time I won a game. I'm not going to hijack my own blog by complaining about the specifics, I'm just really sick of 5th Ed 40K.
This is all I've done with the Death Guard, and while it is more than I had last time I'm not sure when I'll finish them. They are playable "as is" for anything I'll ever do with them.
The one on the left has an old Plasma Cannon (I already posted a pic of another RT model that has one as well) and the other two are carrying old Conversion Beamers. Since neither of the weapons exist in the CSM list anymore I am fielding them as Missile Launchers. If I put together another Havoc Squad I'll do another 2 PC / 2 CB combo.
The models are really cool and fit in very well with the rest of my old stuff. I have been thinking about putting together a 100% Rogue Trader "Black Crusade" army, so even if I stop playing a dedicated Death Guard list these models will still have a "current" application.
But I'm not completely inactive. I still play because I have good friends and they enjoy playing at my house so I've been looking at hosting games more seriously than playing them and have started to improve the terrain I have. I'm going to post a few pics here for examples of what I am doing. I haven't decided if I want to create a separate thread for terrain, but I know it doesn't belong here ongoing as part of my Death Guard thread.
The Plague Zombie is for scale and is in no way intended to imply that I have started work behind the scenes on that Traitor Guard force that will double for Necromunda and Chaos Cultist.
Thanks for reading. I'll be working on this now and again, but not with the same intense energy I had before. I still have the Land Raider to finish (have worked on it a bit but nothing worth sharing), I have the old Project X (which is just a Defiler, there, secret is out, big whoop for the amount of time it took), and a few other things I'd like to try at some point. I'd really like to get another Land Raider into this force, but it's ridiculous to even think that before I finish the one I already have started. Eventually I'll be moving on to the last bits of it (things like repair all the broken helmet spikes, clean up details, etc) and wrap it up. I had hoped that I would actually finish the project before I got sick of it. But this isn't going to the Shelf of Shame. I'm happy with what I've gotten done here and I'm looking forward to sharing more stuff as I make it happen.

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ GreyDeathOne- Be that as it may, apparently. But this update is so epic that it might just make up for being gone... uhm... months on this thread?
@ Marcin Ciszewicz- That poor Vindicator is about to have something much, much worse happen to it. Heh.
@ Sarpedon_702- Plague Marines are the most fun to paint I think. Not sure if they are the most fun to play all the time, but from a modeling aspect they are awesome!
First of all, sorry for no updates here since the beginning of March. I've been working on another project (check out my Cultist blog if you like) but yesterday and today I took a break fro it and decided to finally finish my Land Raider. Now please note it is not 100%, it's like 98%, I still have a bit of work I want to do like some detail bits (such as pick out all the rivits w/ bronse, banding on the Lascannon power cables, etc) but I had to show off what is done and it won't really look that much different once I've finished the few tiny detail bits I want to do.
Since it's been so long, here's a series of WIP pics that got to this point:
December 19, 2010- just after it arrived from an eBay auction:
December 26, 2010- Starting to convert w/ GS
January 16, 2011- Conversions are done, awaiting completion:
Months and months and months pass. But then a few days ago I was invited to play in a 1,000 pt tourney kind of thing down at the FLGS tomorrow w/ the guys. I couldn't say no because it's been a while since I've seen the guys and it'd be cool to hang out. But a tourney (kind of, I'm still not sure exactly what it is) isn't my style of play, and I'll be playing against people I've never met. After thinking things over I decided to make the worst list I could come up with, and the centerpieces of my army had to be the Land Raider (mostly because I once heard someone say "what kind of an idiot would put a Land Raider in a 1,000 point tourney list?"
Folks, I am that kind of idiot. And without further ado, I proudly present my (mostly) completed Death Guard Land Raider!!!
I love this model so much. A lot of work went into it and while yes I know there are things yet to be done still it's so so so much better than it was before and as is will look amazing on the tabletop.
I really tired so I'm going to end this here but I'm hoping for a Q&A session on this because I'm really happy about it and I'm feeling the love of Father Nurgle shining on me again. I still have a Vindicator and a Defiler to finish up. I expect more is coming soon.
Thanks for waiting for this to finish up, thanks for reading, and thanks for your comments. Remember, it's not finished! If you see something I missed please point it out, I'm going for 100% on this one and let me tell you, it's been a brutal project.
I'll be back, thanks again!

@ FITZZ- Beat me to the punch! Thanks for checking this out, and that Vindicator is on deck. I'll be posting a "start to finish" log like I did on my last Rhino project because it was a lot of fun to do.
@ wolfshadow- Glad you like it, thanks for checking it out!
@ inmygravenimage- Sticky for sure. I had so many coats of wash on it that even the next morning picking it up had that "cold tacky" feeling.
@ Yggdrasil- If I had thought about it before I'd have done the spikes in 7. Maybe on my next project. I really like how the meat came out. I've considered putting some "ground enemy" on the tracks, but decided not to because I shy away from pegging an enemy type. What I may do instead is make a trophies display w/ bits from different opposing armies. That way no matter who i am fighting the display will still be pertinent.
@ Anung Un Rama- Oh man don't do that, you'll regret it for months. I have to say that at times this was the most unfun project I've ever worked on. It was fun to build, but the painting part was horrible. I still have a lot left to do w/ t but at least now I feel like it's playable and I can put it on the tabletop with some degree of pride.
@ Limbo- Ha! Making you hurl was on my "to do" list once I finished this. The pointy bits are dead solid because I covered the butt end w/ superglue and them smooshed it into the GS so the glue hardened inside the GS. Have yet to have one come out and it's been manhandled a lot.
@ Lord of Death Mountain- Thanks for coming by and checking it out! The flaps of skin were the very first GS to hit this model and I'm really satisfied w/ how it came out. I've given a lot of thought to having Nurglings scamper all over it (especially since I take the Daemonic Possession upgrade) but my main problem is I can't find my Nurglings. Those mischievous little gitz will turn up sooner or later, though.
@ Daichallar- Like Fionn said "it hurts to hold".
WOW! Thanks guys, I really appreciate the feedback. I'm having one of those "end of project" retrospectives and I see a lot of mistakes I'm going to hopefully learn from. Most likely I won't, I think I've already shown time and again that my ideas are scattered and frequently haphazard, with positive results owing more to fortunate happenstance than due to any specific planning or vision on my part...
That said, I am really upset about the ink wash. I should have done a color test. It's neon green, almost electric. If I had meant to do it on purpose it would have been cool. As it is I've washed it and washed it and used contrasts to tone it down, bottom line is that it is what it is now and if I want it to be different I need to start all over again (wish I had actually, too late now) but at least I used that same batch of ink on a large part of my force so at least it somewhat matches.
I really like the tracks. I'll be buying more custom tracks from Blood-and-Skulls-Industry for my next projects without doubt. I can't say enough good stuff about Machinator or his work. He's a great seller on eBay, has some amazing project blogs for inspiration and adoration, and from the times I've chatted w/ him on Dakka he's a cool guy. If you like the brutal tracks of horrible spiky death I used on this Land Raider then you really need to check his stuff out.
But getting back on track... ha.... the tracks are very well cast and each bit fit together with no problem whatsoever. The resin was easy to work with and was pliable enough for me to "cheat" and wrap a long section around the front bogies on the Land Raider instead of getting that "angled" look when treads fit together. I had to do some careful grooving on the back of the track to allow for the bend, but it worked out great and I'm really happy w/ it. They are completely awesome and I think I should get a Tank Shock bonus for using them. My only "not completely awesome" moment w/ the tracks was having to sand the rivets off each side of the track to make it fit within the track well on the LR but I do not know if that was simply because of an original construction flaw in the LR as I bought it assembled from eBay. Even then it wasn't a major issue because it is resin. I'm really happy w/ the end result and I am looking forward to the next project I have that uses replaceable tracks.
There's still much to be done, now that I have really looked at it and had others check it out I've noticed things that really should happen in order for it to be considered completely finished and feel that I gave it the attention it deserved. I'll poke away at it the next time I have some down time.
I am quite happy to say that it saw action this weekend and was a major contributing factor in my very first 1 on 1 victory in 2011! Or is this wasn't "the" first it sure feels like it becasue I can't remember the last time I won a game outright. 1,000 pts each, my Death Guard vs. his Tyranids. We played the "Annihilation" scenario which is my absolute favorite. Here's some shots of the Land Raider in action!
Leading the way!
Somehow I don't feel driving on ice and snow is any sort of issue for this vehicle...
Operation "Everybody get out and shoot at the same thing" was a rousing success!
Puking out my Chaos Lord and his Terminator security retinue.
Operation "RUN AWAY!! RUN AWAY!!!" in full effect. Don't miss the other Rhino in the far upper left. All my vehicles were hauling flat out to get away from the closing pincers of the Tyranids.
In the end it was Death Guard 3 VP, Tyranids 0. It was a well deserved (and much needed) victory on my part and I applaud my friend & opponent Fionn for offering such a tough and fair fight. No doubt he is crafting a 'Nid list right now to stomp me through a storm grate this weekend, but it is all in fun. Yeah. Fun.
Not much of an update, more of a rambling rant on my part. Thanks for reading, thanks for the compliments, and I will for sure be back sooner opposed to later. I'm not going to make any promises, I'm just going to go with the motivation and see where it takes me.
More is coming. I'll be back!

Skalk, that LR looks frickin' awesome, man! I agree with Machinator that it looks very deadly on the battlefield, especially on a pretty snow-filled one. Glad to see that you're finishing this bad boy up. I know it's been a long time coming, but it looks amazing. The only thing I could really suggest is to drill a hole in the bottom and put in some LED's to make that maw glow, but that would be a severe task on a model that's pretty much finished. I would also have no clue as to how to wire the thing correctly, I just think it would look sweet. Glad to hear you got a victory in your game, even with the LR in your 1000 pt list. I'll stay tuned.

@ Yggdrasil- This is off the top of my head, I have the list at home.
Chaos Lord (90) w/ Mark of Nurgle (20), Terminator Armor (30), Combi-Melta (5) Chain Fist (15) = 160
Chaos Terminators (4 x 30 = 120), Mark of Nurgle (20), 2 Power Fist (20) = 160
Land Raider (220) w/ Daemonic Possession (20) = 240
1st Squad Plague Marines (23 x 7= 161), Chaos Rhino (35) = 196
2nd Squad Plague Marines (23 x 7= 161), Chaos Rhino (35) = 196
Total - 952. I think I missed something maybe, I'll check when I get home, but it came in under 1,000.
@ Machinator- Thanks for checking this out! I'm really hoping to add a 2nd Land Raider to my force within the next few months and I've been looking at the Krusher Pattern 0 Tank Treads. When I do you'll be hearing from me for sure.
Spent my "modeling time" posting this thread on Dakka last night, but did some thinking about my next project. I already have the Vindicator so I'm going to work on that next. I also have the Defiler but it's not likely to find itself on deck anytime soon because it's a huge GS project and after working on the Land Raider so long I'm looking forward to something with a bit more "immediate satisfaction" to get me back on the Plague Marine track. Plus I still have open projects on my Cultist that I really would like to finish. The best thing I have going for me w/ the Death Guard list is that I'm essentially "done", I can field almost anything I'd ever want to field from the CSM list. I don't have any Fast Attack (Bikes, Raptors, etc) and I don't have any Obliterators, nor do I have any Possessed. I have models that I can convert into most anything, so those are still open as future projects if I choose to include them. As it is right now I could field... (guessing)... maybe 4,000 points? I'd have to add it all up to be sure but I'm thinking it would be pretty close to that.
I'll be back w/ more Nurgle goodness soon!

@ Moltar- I'm glad you like it, it was way too long in coming. Just between us... I was wondering if it was going to wind up on the Shelf of Shame because I got so sick of looking at it. It was *so* long in coming in fact that I lost the original hatch covers (I still have the Havoc Missile Launcher and the Twin Link Bolter attachments though) but I'm sure they will turn up sooner or later. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on another Land Raider (likely later this year) and build from the experience I gained form this project (such as order tracks BEFORE you get sick of the project, etc). As for the LED in the maw, it's a totally do-able idea, but in order for it to look good I'd have to work the inside of the model to look like meaty throat icky stuff instead of the bare plastic it is now. Maybe with another project?
@ risewiththefallen- I'm guessing around 4,000 but I'd have to sit down and add it all up. If I add in all of my WIP stuff I'll likely add another 1,000 points. I think it's time to do another "group shot".
@ Tim 121RVC- Thanks for compliment, and thanks for checking this thread out! More is coming!

Hi Skalk,
I love the land raider, ever since your started it. The flesh has come out really nice, love the spikes, and the my fav part the MAW
Those tracks have turned out great, but need some blood and flesh, of some mashed up marines
Great work

@ tipios- Hey man, good to see you around! Thanks for checking this out again, glad you're liking the Land Raider! There's more work to be done on it, but it'll be back soon for a final showcase soon.
Quick update tonight because I am beat tired and have to go do something tomorrow morning I wish I had not volunteered to do... gahhh. Anyway, finally finished the Missile Launcher Havocs:
The Marine on the far right is the last one I finished. I've had this project out for quite some time.
Rogue Trader miniatures will always rule
Still wet from the wash! Ha, I just noticed that when I saw the closeup of the pic.
I used a combination of Plasma Cannons and Conversion Beamers for "counts as" Missile Launchers, in part because I'm mad that CSM can't have Plasma Cannons anymore but mostly because they look too cool to not use for something.. I'm going to do another squad of Heavy Weapons and add the rest of my Plasma Cannons and Conversion Beamers so I have a cohesive look to the units.
More is coming just not sure when. Going to be a weird weekend but at the end of it I hope to have something awesome to share. If not here then on my Cultists thread. Yes, another shameless crossref of my own threads. But hey, it's all about me. Me me me!!! Pay attention to meeeeeeeee!!!! Hahahaa.

Nice ML dudes, Skalk! The two skull faced guys are my favs of the four and I think you've done a really good job on the guy in the last pic. The shading on his skull and shoulder pads looks awesome.

Death Guard are looking nice Skalk! I especially like the teeth on the Land Raider.
One really burning question though. In that batrep, is your opponent using a bulb of garlic to represent a mycetic spore?

Ahahah! Yes!
Those are my Tyranids, and yes, those are bulbs of garlic. I had these amazing, horrifying, disgusting spores that I converted last week, and the morning of the game the varnish on them was still wet. I was disheartened, but Daichallar suggested I grab some garlic and call it good. So yep. Garlic on a dreadnought base.

@ Moltar- I always appreciate your compliments because you know how much respect I have for your work. I really had fun w/ the RT model, and I guess it shows because I put a little extra effort. One thing I just noticed now is the other two ML models... no backpack! Aaaggh! I'm going to go put them on. I have tm already painted, just hadn't attached and fort to before posting that pic.
@ Leigen_Zero- Thanks for the compliment! I love that Land Raider now, it's getting some decent attention and while I still have some bits here and there to finish up, I'm quite happy with it. And yes, my opponent was using a bulb of garlic to represent a mycetic spoke. Here's the story on that- my friend Feldenglas had built a 1,000 pt Tyranid list for a game at our FLGS and was building two models to represent mycetic spores to play in the game w/ but the morning it was ready to pack up they were still tacky w/ HodgePodge so he used garlic bulbs on Dreadnought bases. Oddly enough we went there to play against other people and due to circumstance wound up playing against each other.
@ DarkStarSabre- Outstanding. I love finding out I inspired someone to turn their attention to Father Nurgle. I checked out your stuff and it is awesome! I'm really glad you are digging my stuff.
@ Feldenglas- I edited my posted because I saw you had posted since I started this. Dude check out my points total!!! It's sick! I had no idea I had racked us so much. We have got to play APOC soon.
Well the weekend is just about here and the burning question of "what next" looms. The weather report forecasts some rain, so I know I'll be spending some time indoors. Like I need an excuse, but it helps.
Before getting into much else, here's a few shots of what I have in finished in my army so far:
I love setting everything up for shots like this.
These are the only models in my army that I did not paint. The five old models on the right row were from a Black Crusade force I bought from a guy I gamed w/ back in the day. The rest are eBay. Not bad models, just not "mine" yet, not even flocked.
Aspiring Champions. Just exactly what they are "aspiring" to is unknown since GW removed Chaos Champions from 5th edition.
Lots and lots of big guns courtesy of my Havoc squads.
Normally I would not have a vehicle this close to a Chaos Dreadnought. This was for photographic purposes only.
I just really like this picture.
Here's the rundown of what all that is:
Chaos Lord w/ Mark of Nurgle, Terminator Armor, Combi-Weapon, Daemon Weapon- 170
Daemon Prince w/ standard issue, Mark of Nurgle- 130
88 Plague Marines w/ standard issue- 2,024
9 Plague Marines w/ Plasma Guns- 342
5 Plague Marines w/ Melta Guns- 165
3 Plague Marines w/ Flamers- 84
4 Havocs w/ Heavy Bolter, Mark of Nurgle- 170
4 Havocs w/ Autocannon- 190
4 Havocs w/ Missile Launcher- 190
14 Terminators (10 Combi-Weapons, 2 Twin-Linked Bolter, 1 Heavy Flamer, 1 Reaper Autocannon, 4 Powerfist, 6 Chainfist, 3 Power Weapon, 1 Lightning Claw, Mark of Nurgle) - 680 (or 820 if upgraded to Terminator Champions)
15 Aspiring Champions- 5 Plasma Pistols, 9 Bolt Guns, 1 Combi- Weapon, 9 Power Fists, 4 Power Weapons, 2 Close Combat Weapon- 940
3 Rhinos w/ standard issue- 105
1 Land Raider w/ standard issue- 220
2 Predators w/ Lascannon sponsons- 210
3 Dreadnoughts (2 DCCW, 1 Missile Launcher, 1 Multi-Metla, 1 Plasma Cannon, 1 Twin-Link Heavy Bolter)- 300
Total before beefing things up and moving things around- 5,920
Wow. I really had no idea. I was guessing I'd stretch to get 4,000. base value is almost 6,00 and that's before all the upgrades I could employ. Wow. I'm kind of stunned. I honestly didn't think I had that much. I just realized I have some errors in there, such as the Aspiring Champions will be less expensive if they are for the Havoc squad, or if I pull apart a Plague Marine squad to fill out the mandatory 5-man rule per Havoc Squad they will cost 15 instead of 23. It is a small matter. I know if I min / max I'll easily have over 6,000 points.
Ok, so anyway, there's a good idea of what I have and what I can bring to bear against my opponents. My question for you all now is this:
What's missing? What's next?
Those are models marked by Nurgle but have not yet been finished. Top row far left is a Havoc Lascannon squad. Next are the Khorne Plague Marines (aka Chosen). Then a Defiler, a Predator, a Vindicator. Next is 4 Aspiring Champions w/ various wargear, Plague Marines w/ Special Weapons (3 Melta, 1 Flamer), 30 Plague Marines, and a squad of Possessed.
Here's what I am thinking- there's at least a few Death Guard players that read this thread. The rest of you are either Chaos players or followers of Chaos in one way or another. What I'm looking for is your advice. In fact, I'll go as far as to have you pick the project!
Yup. You guys pick the project. I'm going to start work on it tomorrow morning, whatever it is. I'll hammer through it over the weekend and likely finish it Monday or Tuesday (I'm working dayshift on Monday but I'll make some time to model later on).
So here's what I can say up front- I have everything I need for any project, so whatever it is I can do it.
Majority rule, and you can also vote for things like "finish your Land Raider you idiot!" or even better yet, "Skalk pick up your desk!"
Please share your opinion on the army list I have and what should come next. I'll be back later to check it out and I'll pick up whatever project is decided here tomorrow morning.

I must say, I do love rank and file in bulk. And that's a lot of plague marines
If I may so cast my vote, even though it's unlikely, Nurglified titan? That's where my vote is going. If you had any Slaanesh influence I would suggest something there, but as it stands it's still absurdly out there enough for my tastes. And remember, majority vote wins!

@ Lord Kaesar II- Ha. Leave it to the Slaaneshi cultist to go for the most extreme option possible. It's all about the experience. I'll admit that instead of simply dismissing the idea I actually thought about how I could make one. In a time far in the future I'd love to do something like that. As it stands right now I don't even have the materials for basic framework. I've researched on Dakka many times looking for process / procedure, and while I've seen some great ideas, if you've followed my work for any amount of time you know the very first part of the project I abandon is the plan itself and just let the Warp take me where it will.
@ Lord of Death Mountain- I have 2 very Nurgly Chaos Spawns right now, I don't think I've ever shown them because I've had no application for them. I've thought about a Nurgle Sorcerer but man the psychic powers for CSM are so lame (unless yo have the Mark of Slaanesh, then you get one of the best psychic powers in the game...) and (in my opinion) unless you have your Sorcerer kitted out to be a close combat monster and has a retinue of ablative wounds to keep him alive he's a whole bunch of points tied up into a nice tidy package for your opponent.
@ sennacherib- Total before beefing things up and moving things around- 5,920. I could easily field over 6K with a few upgrades here and there.
@ Moltar- The voice of logic and reason. Somehow I knew you'd say to finish the Land Raider.
@ inmygravenimage- Usually my desk looks like this:
@ FITZZ- I'm wicked looking forward to it as well, especially the 24" ST 10 AP 2 Large Blast part.
Yay! Democracy in action! No one agreed on a single thing!
Shew! I don't feel so bad about having left this morning at 8:30am to go for a "short ride" and not getting home until around 4pm. From there I passed out on the couch for a while, got up, lit off some fireworks w/ the kids, small bonfire, and that brings us up to date with me typing this out.
I'm going to go pick up my workspace a bit and figure out what to do next. I'll be back.

WHAT??? You TROLLED me? And here I thought it was a genuine suggestion. That said, I do accept responsibility and this is all my fault. I assumed that by displaying the things I had on my "to do" list and then asking people what they thought I should work on next, logically they would pick from that list. Apparently I left it too open-ended.
Lord Kaesar II wrote:but, for the sake of being that one guy who sides with someone else's side just because, I'm changing my vote to defiler.
It's likely next on the list of "big" projects, I've been reading the stats on it again and it is pretty disgusting. I'm surprised I haven't fielded it before. And I need two of them.
Lord Kaesar II wrote: The important part is that I got you thinking- ambition is the desire for something, and desire is the essence of He/ She/ It who/ which thirsts.
Chaos is symbiotic. I suddenly have a strong desire to build a big killy thing. The big killy thing changes the way I model (affecting other projects in ways unknown). On the field of battle the big killy thing helps my army shed the blood of a thousand thousand foes. Famine, misery, and death follows in the wake of the big killy thing. We all get something out of it.
Lord Kaesar II wrote: And, on a side note, no clean workspace for you! Makes me think a little too much on the logistics of cleaning mine
Muuahhaha hahhahha hahhahha!!! I snatch a small victory from all of this!

I am off to do something productive. I have no idea what it is, but I'll steer my own destiny for a while. I think. It's so hard telling. Man I hate Chaos sometimes.

I'll have you know that I wasn't joking about the titan, but that I figured something oughta get on the list, especially if it's something with a high coolness factor. But I'm still counting on seeing a titan of some sort on this thread eventually- get working.
And on your view of chaos, I agree. Though I still side with Slaanesh- just what I do.
On the final side note, I also agree with other people- get to working and getting stuff all over that desk again! Do something that turns out to be wack, disgusting, awesome, and a slew of other adjectives!

Actually, it could be quite chaotic.
Tzeentch strikes me as the sort who goes for law and order just to confuse people for fun. The state of the desk itself is clearly in decay though.

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ tipios- Sure! First, you get a HUGE empty box and a dust broom. You sweep everything on your desk into the box. Wash the table with a rag and you're done!
@ sennacherib- There is madness to the order. Chaos need not always be overt (think Alpha Legion...)
@ Lord Kaesar II- After thinking about the how, and when, and reading various tutorials / WIP blogs, I've decided that the Great Beast will eventually break through the Warp and make planetfall here at Trollskogen. But it will take a mighty effort and is not on the schedule currently. But fear not, more corrupted gifts for Father Nurgle are coming.
@ fasteddiexx1- Hey man, good to see you again! The funniest thing (to me) about your comparison to John Blanche is that I absolutely hate his artwork. A visionary without doubt, but his presentation has alwasy turned me dead off. Ha. But I understand it for how it was meant, and you, good sir, humble me.
@ DarkStarSabre- My Death Guard came from a much larger Black Crusade force that included an aspect from many different legions. In my purest form I am Chaos Undivided, but the call of Father Nurgle has been too strong to deny.
Short update tonight. I've been taking the opportunity to paint at work during breaks and lunch and was able to finish three Plague Marines with Melta Guns. I put a bit extra effort into these because they were the only models I had and I was really focused. I think I did a decent job on them (meaning I didn't skip any glaringly obvious details, etc)
My attempt at OSL failed but I left it because I'm going to try to get better at painting and reach a new level. I feel I did a pretty decent job at clean lines, minor conversions, and solid color scheme.
Two things are really starting to bother me and will likely result in a significant change in my modeling. First is unit identification. Almost all of my rank & file Plague Marines look exactly the same, meaning no specific differences. When I am playing smaller games it is not such an issue, but when I am playing a large force and two squads assault the same target, it gets pretty tricky keeping track of who belongs to which squad. I'm thinking about going back through my models and either painting identifying marks on their backpacks or on a pauldron. This will help keep me honest and help my opponent know who's left.
The other thing that is really starting to hit me is I don't like the flock I am using for my bases. Back in the day that is what my tabletop looked like (I had a 12 X 6 table covered with the same stuff I have my Death Guard based with) but especially since I have been doing my Cult with "ash waste" bases, my Death Guard just seem... less awesome. It would be a major undertaking to re-base every one of those models, but it would be worth it no doubt. It's wearing on me. But it could just be a moment I'm having? What do you folks think? Keep it the same for nostalgia, or give them all a new 2011 look?
Comments always appreciated. Thanks for looking. I'm on call this weekend so I have to say home, which means modeling time! I'll be back again soon with more love from good 'ol Papa Nurgle.
12212
Post by: Lord Kaesar II
I'd call for a new base-- if I were going for nostalgia, my models would still have the goblin green base, with the slotta bases having a strip of metal as well, whereas my newer urban bases are a lot cooler (as well as adding uniformity to my armed forces). You know you want the more modern spin on your death guard, especially if the cult is already on the newer rotation.
You know you wanna. Kaesar II
PS. And with the markings, that's always a very good idea. I remember back when I started the trend of having individual squad markings for each of my marine squads, which carried over into my vet guard. It makes for some very easy identifitication. Even just putting a different sort of triangle or something on their backpacks would really help out their looks. Using different nurgley symbols would win some favour in my books.

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ Lord Kaesar II- Yes, I do want to. I was sort of hoping that someone would talk me out of it, but it's already too late. I've been thinking about it for a while and when I was basing the Havoc Missile Launcher team I posted a week or so ago I knew I was sick of the flock I am using. Basing those Metal Guns w/ the same flock is what prompted me to ask. It's just so much. I have, what... 140+ models or something like that? It's a project I know needs to happen but wow, it is going to be the least fun thing I have done with my Death Guard to date (yes, even worse than finishing Squad Excermentum). The markings / etc will be a lot more fun and a lot easier. I've been going back through my Plague Marines and while the paint scheme is solid there's more than a few of them that are just Chaos Marines with Nurgly armor. I need to make at least some of them look more corrupted and defiled. Going back through them and making a few changes here and there (like GS the pauldrons, etc) will really make them stick out more, and also assist greatly w/ unit identification.
@ Feldenglas- I have to admit, after seeing those it's making me think about making some drop pods for my Death Guard. Would be (mostly) mechanical instead of biomass, but the drippy goo slime ick you have on those Mycetic Spores has got me thinking about yet ANOTHER project to put on the list. At this point I'm starting to believe that my only hope of finishing all these project ideas is to achieve immortality.
So yeah. Looks like I have some really tedious work ahead of me. I've been thinking about it for a long time, thinking more about it recently, posted it as a question last night even though I already knew the answer. I'm going re-base my entire Death Guard force. It is going to suck and I hate the idea already but I know when it is done it will be so much more awesome than it already is. I'll be doing it over time, meaning all new models coming in will get the new Chaos Wastes basing, and I'll do old models here and there. It won't be something I finish in one go.
One happier news, I'm going to start working on my Possessed later tonight. I'm breaking out the GS for this project. I don't know how far I'll get (have been up since 6 and I'm beat, plus I'm splitting my attention w/ my Cultists because I have some new zombies I'm working on) but I have beer and Metal and Possessed Plague Marines! Crank the Bolt Thrower and crack another Black IPA!
Will post pics of whatever I have done before I go to bed or when I wake up, whichever happens first.
I'll be back!

You could add some static grass or snow to your bases to make them look better.
Your models are great btw.

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ moonshine- I am going to scrape the flock on them, superglue the ballast rock I'm using for my Cult, drybrush Ash Waste, and done. It's more a cohesiveness thing than anything else. And thank you for the compliment, I truly do appreciate it.
Muuahhahhaa!! Ok, beer and Metal is doing the trick. Here's my Possessed squad (holy number 7 of course) w/ some GS. I'll be doing more w/ these as far as detail but the GS they have is what they are getting. Used a range of different things to make these. Should be looking pretty awesome in a few hours. Off to paint some Undead Guardsmen while I wait for the GS to cure.
Sorry for the photo quality. Something is wonky w/ my cameras focus and I'm in no mood to mess around w/ it.

Oh my goodness yes. Those guys are going to be awesome. That fleshy yuck all over them... that's going to be like the meat on your vehicles, yes?
I LOVE the idea of nurglypods. I briefly toyed with the idea of yucking up a conventional marine pod with loads of GS, but discarded the idea as impractical and ultimately making the finished product look too derivative. There would be a lot of work to eliminate the space marine silhouette of the machine, but that wouldn't be a problem for your Death Guard, now would it?

Brilliant stuff Skalk I'm slightly ashamed it's taken me so long to go back and read this whole thing. Great work producing a really characterful army, I particularly like the mouth Heavy Flamer on the Chaos Dread I can just imagine the screams as it pukes all ther the enemy. If your going to do the rebasing I recommend taking it a squad at a time and doing it throughly mixed in with other projects literally while your waiting for the paint to dry.....

Wow Skalk you been busy! Those plague marines and possessed marines look real nasty and intimidating you gotta do a group shot of all your completed models .
Man keep up the great work and btw how is the airbrush shopping coming?
26139
Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ Feldenglas- Yes, it's going to be the same meat as the vehicles. I think it's time to revist some of my other models as well, specifically my Terminators and Aspiring Champions. The older the Plague Marines, the more profound the mutation / corruption should be. Not going to happen today or tomorrow, but you'll likely be seeing some more foulness on the models that are supposed to be venerable. As for Nurglepods, I have a decent idea what I want them to look like and how to make them. I'll explain later. Also just a heads up, I won't be diving into that project anytime soon that I am aware of, but you know how distracted I can get someti...look, a squirrel!
@ moonshine- I checked out the work in your gallery and liked a lot of it. I appreciate the compliment and thanks for following my work!
@ Llamahead- You just read through ... 8 months of posts? Wow. That's pretty awesome and I'm psyched to know someone "newer" to the project has gone back to see where all this started. That's a lot of stuff to go through, I did it myself just the other day to regain perspective on all of this. Your advice on the rebasing is solid and I know that's the direction I'm going to take. It doesn't have to happen today or tomorrow, but I should set some sort of schedule of I'll never get it finished. Maybe before the next time I play out instead of at home.
@ GreyDeathOne- I'm just maintaining my recent pattern. Extended periods of inactivity punctuated by short bursts of intense production. I posted a "full army" pic a page or so back, but here's the main photo. Current point value came to just shy of 6,000 with no upgrades or additional wargear, just plain WYSIWYG. And the hunt for the airbrush is on full stop right now until I take care of some other obligations. But it is on the roster and I appreciate the assistance you gave.
Quick update because I want to keep things rolling. Working on the Possessed squad, I think it's coming along nicely and it's going to look awesome when it is finished.

I read the fluff on them again before I built them, and really wanted to give them all a purely individual look while still maintaining a distinct connection with the rest of the army. So far so good I think.
And as usual with most of my projects, these are eBay rescues. None of the above were fresh off the sprue, they were all abused and unloved by someone else before they found their way to the loving embrace of Father Nurgle.
To give you an idea of exactly what I mean, here's the box where I keep those not yet initiated to the Death Guard yet:
The "shoulder pad counts as face shield" models are just horrific. Who thought that was a good idea? It is a small matter. Once they find their way to me, they find a home. It might take a while to get out of that box and onto the tabletop, but it will happen eventually.
Ok, back to work, thanks for looking!

Looking good I am glad you like my gallery, did you see the death guard ? I should probably get a picture of my new death guard. @ JoeyHeadwounds- I'm all about rescues. Almost every model in my Death Guard that has been added since Nov '10 has been an eBay rescue. The Land Raider, most recent Rhino, all of my Aspiring Champions, all of my newer plastic CSM, etc.
@ moonshine- I did and I like the tones a lot. If I were doing my Death Guard from the very start right now the tones would be darker and more subdued. I like the color scheme i have though, it certainly is distinct!
@ Anung Un Rama- Yeah, I can't say I'm looking forward to fielding them, but maybe I'll get lucky and roll something good for Daemonkin.
@ Llamahead- Yes it would be. Stop it.
Just a text update. Everything is coming along quite well, I'm staying motivated and have made a lot of progress on the last bits for the Land Raider, and the Possessed are likely going to get some photo updates soon. One thing I am trying on the Land Raider is doing the "lens effect". I saw a technique last night that seems amazingly easy, but of course I am having issues with making it look just right. Practice practice practice.
I'll be back with more Nurgly goodness soon!

Hey - sorry I've not been on here for a while, been paging back through the updates. Don't even know what to say other than well done on keeping going, its one of the best armies I've seen in ages!
My vote is for you to finish the Possessed, only because the conversion on Number 1 has echoes of some of the modelling work of a certain Mr. John Blanche back in the day.

FYI a really easy and chaotic "corrupted" ground effect happens if you drip superglue onto wet Elmers. It crinkles up and makes some truly random patterns.
Also Very nice looking stuff indeed.

I would love to looking forward to fielding my possessed, I love the models and fluff (The first Heretic anyone?). Would be cool if you could narrow the randomness down alittle, like Possessed with a mark can only get 1 of 3 random powers.

@ DarkStarSabre- Rescues work really well for Death Guard because the things that the prev owner messed up are just "value added features" for me. If I were going for a cleaner look I would not get away with some of the things I do w/ Plague Marines.
@ migsula- Thank you for the compliment. It's always my pleasure to show shots of my workstation becasue it's a easy Dakka update w/o actually having to do any work.
@ grantosjones- Welcome back! The Possessed are getting most of my attention right now as I have a 2K game this weekend and I am going to try a completely new list. I won't give it away here because he reads my blog (Hi Feldenglas ) but be assured I'm pulling quite a switch from anything I've played before. If it works out, awesome. If not, I'll still have a lot of fun and I think the list is completely in line with Nurgle fluff. Plague Marines have 7 Havoc Squads with Missile Launchers, right?
@ Galorn- I've never heard that before, I am going to try it and see what happens. Thanks for the tip!
@ Limbo- I would prefer it if I actually got to pick the power seeing how they are 26 pts apiece before they get anything else. My Plague Marines only cost 23 pts and they would clean house on those Possessed. I'm not expecting them to do very well but I want to at least say I fielded them. Everything in my army has played at least one game. Well... almost everything. (another foreshadow of the list to come...)
Just a text update today. It's been way too nice outside to lock myself in my game room for modeling and by the time it is dark outside I'm so blown out that all I'm really interested in is sleeping. I have a game coming up this weekend (2K pts vs. Space Wolves) and at very least I know I'm going to be seeing a Land Raider, Drop Pod, and Terminators. If anyone has some advice on killing Space Wolves I'm all ears.
When i do get back to modeling I'm going to focus on finishing my Possessed, plus I have some new detail on the Land Raider that I'm just about ready to share. Thanks for all the support and I'll be back soon.

I actually rather love the fusion of old and new here... I think Nurgle armies are one of the few that could actually pull it off, at least in my mind; seeing the old models brings to mind the past, seeing models from the past absolutely diseased up to gak makes me think of their stagnation... Truly a Death Guard army is old and whithering if it's models are old

A looted wagon w/ Boomgun ?
26139
Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ Yggs- Nope.
I know the Waagh on the Dozer Blade is misleading. It's merely a recycled bit from another model.
Remember this? It's only been 8 months.
I turned it into this and then left it to sit:
...and now it's on the bench being turned back into a mighty Vindacator for my Death Guard. I'm going to magnetize the hatch so that I can create and attach different weapon options based on the kind of battle I am taking it to.
After I posted the first pics I pulled out the GS and gave the Vindicator the same treatment as my other Rhino-based vehicles to match the ongoing theme of my army, and before I went to bed I was able to get the flat white basecoat on it. Trust me, the next pics I post will clear things up.
As far as individual Death Guard troops go, I've been lacking the attention and motivation to finish anything. At most I've worked on the trim of the armor on my Possessed. I haven't had the chance to play them yet either. The Death Guard has been on the shelf for quite some time. I've gotten in a few skirmish games based on Necromunda rules / themes, and I've taken the Cult out for a few scraps.
I'm hoping that doing a "big" project that is relatively simple and quick to finish will help get me back on track.
More pics tonight when I get home.
I hate automatically amended posts.

Skalk your like the dog rescuer of abused models. Man don't know how you take the time to disassemble them and make them look great again.
Good stuff man keep it up.
26139
Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ DG1- I appreciate the compliment, as always. Truth about the whole thing isn't too hard to find. I take randomly broken and abused models and put them back together as purposely broken and abused. I can get away with it (verily, excel at it) with Chaos. I would have much less success were I attempting to recycle some of these horrors into an Astartes chapter. It's never been a secret that one of my attractions to Chaos is that it fits my painting and modeling style. Plus it's a really cool army to play with (with complaints of the nerfed vanilla "one size fits all" of 5th Ed aside) and I've always had a more genuine connection with the "bad guys" in any game system I was playing. But yeah, back to the original point... thanks for the support.
Here's some pics of where the Vindicator has been in the last couple days. I have more work on it right now but I can't upload new pics until tomorrow because I don't have access to my PC. These pics I uploaded yesterday but didn't have time to tap out any text for them.
Putting this model back together was a bit of a pain... literally. I sliced open the pad of my index finger on my left hand when I did something stupid that I'm not going to write here and save for all time to come. I'll simply say that it was a modeling injury that could have been avoided. Look closely and you may see a blood spot or 2 in the pics.
Anyway, here's where the Vindicator was 24 hrs ago:
GS is an amazing substance and I don't know what I would do w/o it. I think at this point it's clear that it is not a Looted Wagon. And really, what Ork would want this nasty thing?
I skipped pics w/white primer because I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter. I'm not doing a "step-by-step" w/ this one like I did my last Rhino. Here it is after the first green ink, flesh base, and some metalics.
Since these pics were taken I've done 2 washes w/ Griphon Sepia. It's looking like it belongs in my army.
More updates coming as I get more work done and can post pics. Thanks for looking, and I'll be back.

@ wolfshadow- Hey Brother! Decent seeing you online again. Appreciate the compliment and I'll be catching up on your work soon!
@ Limbo- I'm not saying it's "easy", but yeah, there's specific incentives. Such as when mistakes look like conversions, uneven paint looks like shading, etc. Glad you like the boil, it was fun to make.
@ dakkagrot187- Complete the transformation and abandon the false Emperor! The warm loving embrace of Father Nurgle awaits!
@ Moltar- Yup. When I ruin a vehicle, it's ruined.
@ bigfish- Thanks for checking this out and thanks for subscribing! More coming soon(ish).
@ ChaosBeast73- Welcome back! I really like expanding this army and I always appreciate feedback from people that are enjoying where I'm going w/ all of this.
@ moonshine- Thank you. Turning Imperial vehicles into tools of the Chaos Gods is likely what I enjoy the most when working on this army.
Wow, thank you one and all! I'm digging the Vindacator project a lot, and it's coming along pretty decent so far.
I didn't get a lot done on it today, was distracted by a my rid of other things. But I got a bit of detail and some washes done. I'm liking the results so far:
I don't expect this is going to take anywhere near as long as the Land Raider (which *still* isn't 100% yet) because there's less "fiddly bitz" on this and I'm cranking through it. Things will slow down a bit when I get to the next phase of detail, and I'm working on other projects at the same time. I'll get a little done here and there though, and I'll have a finished product before long.
Thanks for looking and thanks for the C&C. Always appreciate knowing people are into what I am doing. I'll be back!

inmygravenimage- It was a good idea at first, not sure if I still like it. But it is what it is, I won't be taking it off.
I think I'm finished. Unless someone points out an egregious flaw, the Vindacator is done.
I decided the rear was good "as is", mostly because I realized some modeling flaws that I didn't want to deal with.
I didn't slack on the copula, though. Check out the flexibility:
Combi-weapon w/ "counts as" potential:
Havoc Missile Launcher:
Nothing:
I probably rushed towards the end. I always do.
More coming later, but I have absolutely no idea what. Thanks for looking.

Should that be a saying now? "I just made a Skalk" "Man, what an awesome Skalk". Have to admit, something epicily disgusting comes to mind when you say it out loud.
I can't really tell where you did a rushed job, vindicator looks great

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ bigfish- When I first started the conversion I meant to make couplers for the hoses to connect into the tanks, but somewhere I forgot and by the time I realized it was missing I would have undone a lot of work I'd already done so I let it go. Besides, if anyone is looking at the back of my Vindicator chances are it won't be on the board much longer anyway.
@ Joe- You know I always appreciate the compliment. I enjoy that look a lot and it has become a signature theme throughout my force. I know it will continue and appear on every model I can put it on.
@ tipios- Thank you. I'm kind of psyched that I have a specific "goodness".
@ GD1- Trick or treat! Ha.
@ Limbo- Yeah, say my name quickly a few times. It sounds weird. And I "feel" like I rushed, so therefore I did somewhere... but seeing how you are one of the 3 people that notice my shortcuts and didn't see one... maybe it's not there.
No photos for this update, just stopping by to offer a heads up about the terrain thread I started up a couple days ago. It's not for the Death Guard per se, but they will fight and kill and bring the love of Nurgle to all there. I've got some solid inspiration and I'm getting some really good looking work done. Stop by there if you get a chance. I'll be back this way soon with more Nurgle awesomeness, but my focus right now is to hammer out some awesome looking terrain and get the guys back over here for a game soon.

Whoa. How many points have you got now Skalk. I havent popped into your blog for a while but you have been making stop and go progress like i have except that you have made a lot more progress than i.
When you was the vehicles with gryphon sepia, is that what gives them the slightly purple shadows and the tone to the fleshy bitz?
26139
Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ sennacherib- I am not sure how many point now, I tallied it up a while ago but forgot what it was. Maybe 6K? Not sure. My "progress" has been more "stop" than" go" lately, I was gone for months. I am feeling more inclined to work on the mechanized aspect of my Death Guard. Right now I have like 100 Marines and 70 of them would be on foot. I need to mobilize them a bit more. I'm not going to turn my entire army into a "fast attack" force, but it would be nice to have the option of not being shot to pieces when I'm trying to reach an objective. Regarding paint- yes, exactly that. I Vomit Brown over flat white for the flesh and then wash it with Gryphon Sepia. Sometimes I used a diluted Gore Red after the Gryphon Sepia has completely dried and then "wash" it over the same way I used the Gryphon Sepia. It adds a light red / raw look to everything and the recesses of the "pores" wind up with a deep red look. Thanks for stopping by! There's always more Death Guard coming, I have too much invested in it to stop. I won't be buying anything new for it, I have enough miniatures "on deck" to count as a new army. Well wait... I do want another Land Raider. Maybe I'll get one next year. But yeah, I'm done with buying anything else. If I did nothing but paint Death Guard until it was truly and completely done (meaning every model I have that is currently slotted to be part of that army) I'd be painting for many months. Lesson learned for sure, don't build faster than you can paint. Ha.
Another "no photo" update, and a slight reversal. I really enjoy doing projects for this army, but every now and then just get sick of it because of the lack of discernible "progress". I'm going to whittle away on things again for a while, the cold weather is returning and I'll start painting at work during lunches again. But I'm also going to help keep myself from hitting a slump again by putting my spare Predators (2) and Rhinos (4) on the list because vehicles (other than my Land Raider) seem to go together quickly and provide that sense of accomplishment much sooner than another squad of Plague Marines. So those might be seeing some GS and paint before long. Besides, having more mech in my army offers more flexibility in my list choices, and eventually I expect to have the entire thing on the table for an APOC game. Yes, I have been talking about that for over a year now. I expect that it really will happen someday.
I'll post some pics before long. Thanks for stopping by. I'll be back.

Thanks guys, appreciate you stopping by.
Next plan for the Death Guard is to wait. I'm going to (slowly) work on finishing the models I have started (specifically the Possessed, Chosen, and Defiler) but with the rumors of 6th Ed coming out in July '12 I do not want to crank out something that may be obsolete in the next edition. My opinion of 5th Ed is it is (at best) vanilla in general and completely underpowered / generic for CSM (unless you play Slannesh, which I don't and won't). I'm feeling confidant (hopefully anyway) that the upcoming edition will be a major improvement for CSM across the board.
This blog has slowed down but is far from finished. I have at least 5 outstanding projects that need to be completed, and my ultimate goal is to have at least 1 unit of everything in the CSM Codex, even if it is not specifically "fluffy" like Death Guard Raptors and Bikers.
So more is coming. And it will be as diseased and inspired as all things that have come before. Father Nurgle is not yet completely satisfied with my offerings.

Your army reminds me of one of my friends' army which is impressive in terms and quantity and because he used every models he could lay his hand on and converted it, whatever the edition it was from, even from other games like Space Crusade.

Wow, thanks for the feedback!
@ GD1- If my wife gets her way, you and I have a date for 2016. She's from CA. We'd be 5 hours away, but that better than our current 50 hours (driving time) away. Yes, I looked it up on Google Maps.
@ Hyenajoe- I wish I could say that I haven't spent a ridiculous amount of money on this army, but I have. I tried to stay away from eBay, but I kept getting dragged back in. Ha. 2012 is full of opportunity.
@ Tortured-Robot- Thank you for the compliment. The work you do is amazing and impressive. You've given me pause to consider the next steps of my army because of inspiration from your most recent work. Regarding the square base and the flock- you said the same thing almost a year ago, and this time I agree. I haven't changed the square base on that Dread yet because I haven't been playing it (and the only reason the base is square is because I added it in 1997) but I will get to it when I start another HUGE project that is coming for my Death Guard. I stated this a while back in the same thread, and haven't started it yet, but my intent is to change every base in my army to the same ones I am currently using for everything else I play (because it matches my game table and terrain):
@ DarStarSabre- I've seen your work before and I really like it a lot. That APOC game is great idea! The only thing keeping us from it is 3,000 miles of ocean.
@ Llamahead- I really appreciate the compliment. The work you do really speaks out to me and I'm impressed with everything you do.
@ sennacherib- You put detail into your models that I won't even attempt. I won't measure quantity over quality. I paint fast and gritty with conversions that include chopped parts and blobs of GS. You sculpt GS and are meticulous with detail. I'm on the table faster, but I cede to your amazing artistry. The Shelf of Shame will not be seeing any of my Death Guard, that much is for certain.
@ Limbo- I appreciate you sticking with me thorugh the ups and
So what does the future hold for the Death Guard? Mentioned it above, but it bears saying again- nothing new until 6th Ed comes out. I'm going to finish the projects I have pending (Possessed, "Khornate" Chosen, Defiler, and a handful of random Marines to fill out a few short squads) but other than that I'm not going to commit more models to the Death Guard until I see the new rules and the new Codex.
I've also been thinking about what got me going on this project in the first place (focusing on one single aspect of my CSM force) and remembering that the Death Guard were originally a part of my overall Black Legion Crusade force (which consisted of Black Legion, Alpha Legion, Iron Warriors, Death Guard, World Eaters, and Night Lords). I totaled up points again the other day and I have over 2X more points of Death Guard than I have for my than my entire "Crusade" force.
The Cultists force I've been working on more recently was originally intended to be an extension of my Death Guard but wound up taking on a life all its own. That really took the fire out of this project. But life is a circle, and I've been thinking more and more about really getting back into this. For one, it's more gratifying. Right now the Cult seems more like work than fun and the things I am creating for it (while distinctly different) are all "rank and file troops" because there's no Codex to work with except to play them as Imperial Guard or use the 4th Ed. Eye Of Terror lists which my current game group is cool enough to let me use. Admittedly the project was more of an artistic expression than specific application outside of APOC and that was great in the beginning, but now I'm feeling unfocused and lost. I think finishing up some of my projects for the Death Guard will be more gratifying as they have a direct and immediate application in the force I am playing and will afford me even more options. One idea I have been throwing around is to run an entirely Daemonic force, with a Daemon Prince leading as much Daemonically possessed stuff as it can. Having my Possessed and Defiler for that game would be pretty awesome.
But other distractions loom. I've been doing a lot of terrain lately, trying to bulk up my collection and improve the overall look of my table. And in the last game I played, I pulled out my very first attempt at CSM, all Mk VI armor:
Bottom line is I am still active in the hobby and interested in getting things done. I lack specific focus right now, and getting back to the Death Guard would be a good way to change that, if only for a while.
Thanks for reading, more will be coming.

Why do your vehicles all have the spikes coming out of the same side on all of them? Is this to tie them together? Or something more sinister?
Anyway, keep up the great work!

Awsome work! And it only took an hour to read it all... Well you should be proud of your painting! Keep up the good work

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ sennacherib-, yes, that is exactly what that is. I bought it in 1999, promptly painted if Flat Olive Drab, and then equally as promptly packed it up as I was moving. Stayed packed until about a year ago. I was thinking about turning it into some horrifying Nurgly thing but I'm holding back from that. Not sure why, it just doesn't feel right. In this game it was nothing but scenery.
@ RSJake- You've commented a couple times, and I appreciate you stopping by. I've subbed to a couple of your threads, currently to RSJake's World Eaters and all of your work is stunning. But about the spiky bit thing... it all started when i was doing a Rhino conversion and wanted it to look like both the corruption of Nurgle and the Warp had touched it. I had a bunch of spiky things, tried it, liked it, did it again... and it became a "theme" that ties everything together. That's really all there is to it. I like how it looks.
@ BloodGenisis- Wow, you read the entire thread? I haven't done that in a long time, I think I'll go back and take another look. Thank you for checking this out, and thank you for the compliment. I'm getting back into this again, so stop back soon for more updates.
So I got home tonight, dug through some stuff sitting dangerously close to the Shelf of Shame, found an Aspiring Champion that really reached out to me, and painted it. Please take special note of the base. This is the first of many more. I'm going to re-base my entire army like this.
Again, not my best work, but nothing ever is anymore. Whatever. It's 100% awesome for tabletop quality and I'll be proud to have it lead any of my squads.
I have a few more Aspiring Champions to work on, and I also found a Havoc Lascannon team I converted a while back and completely forgot about. I worked on some "rank and file" Marines tonight as well. A productive night overall. It's been a while since I've really enjoyed painting. I think I might actually get into this again. Mind you I have a lot of stuff going on right now that is not hobby-related so I won't be doing as much as fast as I have in the past, but as soon as I'm done w/ a project at work I'm going to start painting during lunch again and that's a great opportunity to get the Possessed done. I'm trying to get into the Khorne Chosen but just can't. Rather than force it I'm just going to let it be for now, I have enough projects to keep me busy until I feel like doing them.
That's all for tonight. Thanks for checking this out, and more is coming soon.

Skalk, your work is simply glorious. I've really found your work inspiring for ideas for my GKs, oddly, as I've been building CSM corpses, and your range of ideas and approaches has been highly informative. Also, I really understand your comment:

Again, not my best work, but nothing ever is anymore. Whatever. It's 100% awesome for tabletop quality and I'll be proud to have it lead any of my squads.
Firstly, it's certainly better than most "tabletop quality" I see out there, but more than that your broader point about the general desire to get a painted force on the table rings very true with me.
Good times, mr, and great blog.

Hey, thanks for those kind words!
I love the new base you have done and ties in great with your terrain, which also looks fantastic! I like the ash colour, and I may try to get a bit of that into my bases (even though I seem to harp on about bases they really aren’t my strong point ha-ha).
I'm really just getting back into the hobby myself, I'm slightly worried about you mentioning a new edition or chaos codex, I hope what i am doing will tie in with it .
Is there any more information about a new edition online I should know about?
Anyway less about my problems, Army and board look great, I hope to have something similar at some point in the future ha-ha.

@ inmygravenimage- Thank you for the compliment. I've seen your stuff before but went back again... wow you're going to be busy once you start painting that horde. Glad to know that I've been inspiration for you, even if it is for crushed and mangled CSM. In the end all things come to Father Nurgle... regarding my painting, I wish I would stop whining and just "be". I don't measure my skill against anyone else, I measure it against my expectations and I know I cut corners to hammer things out and have been called on it more than once (drilling barrels, skipping insignias, no detail on backpacks, etc). This particular took about an hour (it was already based and washed w/ green ink) and a lot of that was waiting for washes to dry and the glue on the base to set. During that time I worked on a handful of other models that were not my main focus but are part of the overall mass of Marines I'm trying to finish up. I used to spend days on a single model (when I was playing AD&D or painting for a FLGS contest). Now I'm more focused on doing a "decent" job and getting models on the table. I'll quit whining, promise.
@ Tortured-Robot- Yay! I like the new bases a lot better as well. I started them w/ my Necromunda models and then continued on w/ my Cultists. I've known for a long time that I was going to have to do the same w/ my Death Guard but really wasn't looking forward to the task. Now I know I really do have to make it happen and I also know the results will be completely worth it. Regarding 6th Ed- everything I've heard is just rumor mill, there's no specific info from GW that it is happening. Conjecture (following the timeline GW releases new editions) mixed with rumor (Chaos Codex being split up into general CSM and later another Codex for the "name brand" Legions... or maybe I have that backwards). In either case I'm feeling pretty sure that 5th Ed. is a chapter that is closing by July of 2012 (which it the "projected" release date of 6th). Here are some links I've found that go into a lot more detail:

I like the base, it's simple yet efective and better then a plain base. It's very similar to my rank and file bases, except I add skulls here and there because they are khorne. I mean, you have to have skulls, right?
Your table top painting quality beats the pants off my character painting!

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ RSJake- Thanks for the feedback on the base. I really feel like I'm going on the right direction w/ this. And I appreciate the compliment.
Man I am beat tired. Got up at 6:30 and it's almost 3am now. Tonight was my wife's pre-pre-pre birthday party. Having a blowout tomorrow night w/ most of the people on my IRL friend's list. No wargaming though. This is all bonfire and beer.
That said, I decided to get some work done tonight. Here's another Aspiring Champion. I have a few left and then I am done w/ them for a good while, moving on to "rank and file" Marines.
Two pics because I like this one. It's completely basic (no conversions at all) and it is the exact model that came in the box, it's an eBay save. So here to the person that sold me this- your efforts helped create this:
Basic basic, but completely works for my force. I'm really starting to enjoy the Death Guard again. If I have time tomorrow I'm going to finish up a few standard Plague Marines and post them. Otherwise I'll be back Sunday complaining about my wicked hangover and how I wish I had drank water and taken aspirin before going to bed. And then I'll post some new Plague Marines. Ha.
Goodnight Dakka. See you soon.

@ GD1- Yeah, it's a while. Sorry.
@ Llamahead- I agree, and that's why I have so many projects. When one grinds to a halt, another picks back up.
Ok, really quick because I'm going out tonight. Here's the last of the last I have slotted for the Death Guard currently. Left to Right:
Possessed
Chosen
40 Plague Marines (2 of which are Aspiring Champions) and a Havoc Lascannon team.
Once these are done I'll start in on the Defiler and then that's it for the Death Guard until 6th Ed comes out or I get another Land Raider.
Land Raider. Hmm...
Anyway, here's pics for tonight. Catch you guys soon!

Ok Skalk, without counting, how many miniatures do you think you have all-together? I think you have me beat, and I think I have over 500!
26139
Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ dsteingass- Without exaggeration, thousands. Thousands of thousands. Any of my IRL friends would verify this. If I were to take a photo of everything I have, everything total... I couldn't get it in one shot. It's an illness. Thankfully I have a wife that understands my -obsession- hobby, my kids are Honor students looking for scholarships for college, and my "retirement plan" is to work until I'm 83 and then die while riding my Harley.
Short update again tonight thanks to this new thing I've been doing lately. I've heard it referred to as a "social life". It involves me leaving the house for activities I share with other people outside my workplace. I don't know if I like it yet. It's cutting into my hobby time, that's for sure.
Anyway, wanted to share a little project that really isn't that "special", just sort of neat (to me, anyway). I'm dedicating these guys to my Black Legion Crusade Force. Of course they will get "table time" with my Death Guard, but when the Black Legion hits the tabletop again, these will be the Death Guard contingent that is assigned to them:
Also wanted to post some progress I'm making on my Possessed. All the trim is done, starting the shading, and the last miniature (aside from some bitz and base) is done:
Closeups. Models on each end are almost done, one in the middle needs a lot of work yet.
I really like the one in the middle here. Almost did the entire until like him but decided on diversity instead.
Just about finished. I like this one a lot.
That's it for this update. Will be back soon with more awesomeness. Will hopefully have the Possessed done in time to play this weekend. Or maybe I won't play them at all... maybe I won't even play Death Guard. Maybe I'll pull out a Black Crusade force. Or maybe pull a crazy switch and bring out the 'Nids.
You never know. (Hi guys... ha )

My wife is always making plans behind my back to get me out of the house and into "social" situations! If was meant to be social, god would make beer cheaper than water....oh, wait....OK, so sometimes it is cheaper, but it still cuts into "me" time!

Skalk! I've been patiently waiting to see those possessed again and they've come together quite nicely.
The "Social Life" is one main reason I've been so absent from my paint station. Granted, painting rules, but so does drinking a cold beer with good friends. Just don't get stuck out all the time with the "Wife's friends" that can get old rather quickly. Either way, you're still busting out minis faster than I could. Thanks for sharing and in all fairness, I've had great ideas for minis and conversions come from conversations at bars with people who have no clue what GW or 40k is. Inspiration's everywhere, not just in threads like this one

I'm really impressed the speed of which you turn out great looking models, I think I have a totall of 9 finished marines .

As awlays looking forward to seeing more!

@ dsteingass- What sickness? I don't see any rivets. And yes your woman is an enabler. The absolute best kind.
@ RSJake- I don't mind so much getting out and about. It's just "feast or famine". NOTHING for WEEKS and then sha-blam, 9 days of non-stop social calendar activity. Tonight all I've done is model on the couch while my wife was sitting next to me knitting. We both did our own thing together as we sort of watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's been a really good night.
@ inmygravenimage- Plaguelord Super Heavy? Yes. Yes I have. And I keep talking myself out of it every time. If someone ever happens to buy me one (hint to all my IRL friends) I'd consider it, but as it stands right now I have so much else on the list (finish the Chosen, finish the Havoc Lascannon team, finish the "fill-ins" for Havoc Squard and their Aspiring Champions, finish the Defiler...and that's just on the plate for THIS project, I'm still working on a Cult and a Terrain project) plus I really really really really really (hint to all my IRL firends) want another Land Raider and if I got my hands on one that would stop every other project I have dead in its tracks so I could concentrate on -ruining_ converting it. The future is unknown, anything could happen. I'm just the conduit for Father Nurgle.
@ Moltar- Hails, Brother! Good to see you here again. Yeah, I know, like I said above I don't mind the social thing really, there's just no balance. All or nothing. So this weekend I'm painting / modeling / Dakka, tomorrow I'm painting / modeling / Dakka in between family stuff, Friday I'm working (missed out on the 4 day weekend but the OT pay is pretty wicked), Saturday the guys are coming over for another epic evening of "drink beer roll dice". Sunday I'm recovering from Saturday and with any luck it'll be another paint / model / Dakka day. Glad you like where the Possessed are going, and I hope you enjoy the rest of this update.
@ The Epic Chaosdude!!!- Thank you for checking this out and leaving a comment. Check back now and then, the Death Guard are still growing and more awesomeness is coming.
@ Tortured-Robot- Only 9 finished Marines? That's... almost your entire [http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/403804.page]Chaos Marine Renegades[/url] blog (which is awesome and amazing, btw). And thanks for the compliment on the models and the new bases I am really happy that I changed direction and will (over time) work on converting the rest of the army over to the same look.
Ok! Thanks everyone for stopping by and checking this out again. There's still some life left in the Death Guard.
Now that my social schedule is satisfied for a while, back to the table for me! I was torn on what to do though. Not so much a lack of motivation, quite the opposite. I wanted to do EVEYTHING. I feel like I didn't give my terrain facelift enough of a chance before I got sick of it, and the Cult is in need of some dedicated transports / armor. I need more Plague Marines like I need an Inquisitor poking around my sock drawer.
So Plague Marines it is! But not just any Plague Marines... POSSESSED Plague Marines!
Yes, four and a half months later they are FINALLY done!
Here's a reminder of what they looked like in early July:
Quite a difference when you see them in such a raw state. I have to admit being a bit impressed myself.
Anyway... here's a few closeup shots. I ran out of ideas on a few of them, but they are still finished.
The model on the left mocked me, I couldn't find anything cool to do w/ the face so I just muddled it up a bit and "good enough". The model in the middle was a great idea that could have been better had I thought to model more scales on the GS and have the effect translate better once it was painted. More proof that I rarely plan out what I'm going to do, I just go w/ the random idea and later (usually when I'm painting it) I say "ooohhhh yeahhh... ... ...well, next time". Last model I really like a lot and is one of my favorites in my Possessed squad.
Model on the left is a prefect example of running out of ideas, but is also an example of "beauty in simplicity". I could have put more detail into it, but this is one of those models where basics are fine and the conversion is what really sells the model for me. I really like this one a lot. By contrast, I absolutely hate the model to the right and wish I had dome something completely different. Seemed like a good idea at the time, hate it now, oh well. It'll be the first model off the table when they take wounds.
Last minute change for the model on the left. Realized I was sick of seeing that same slack-jawed "surprised" Zombie face all throughout my armies so i ripped his head off and a few replacement heads later I put a Chaos Warrior helm and it was perfect. Not sure why I kept the Khorne color scheme, but for whatever reason it looks cool and I'm happy with how it came out. Model to the right has more detail in the face than the photo shows. I really like the "wet sticky ewww" look I got on the tentacle. Pure happenstance, just psyched that it worked out as well as it did.
I'm pretty psyched. I finally finished those things. One more squad project off the Shelf of Shame and onto the tabletop! I have a game this coming weekend, debating if I sould go w/ them or not. They need to be in a game at some point soon though. They have stupid rules but whatever... they are Possessed Plague Marines!
So what next? I don't know. That Havoc Lascannon team would come in pretty handy. Everyone I play against has something in their army that needs some Lascannon love, be it a Russ variant to a Battle Wagon. I don't have a lot of heavy support really, but that's going to change before much longer because Kalt is playing more often nowadays and I'm really looking forward to handing him his IG back to him as a superheated chunk of wrecked metal someday.
But then there is the Defiler. I've had it almost a year and it doesn't even have GS on it yet. I really need to get that taken care of because from what I have heard they are brutal on the battlefield. I've never played one but I've read the stats and it looks ok, nothing too special until it is in close combat. But yeah, that's a possibility as well.
I have an eBay rescue Predator that is completely worthless w/o some Nurgle GS love, so that's an option and one that I would hammer out pretty quickly because vehicles just seem to be my thing in this project. Think I'll save that for a day I need to put up a Death Guard update post and keep pushing forward with what I have for now.
Maybe I'll work on filling out the ranks w/ more Plague Marines. I really have no genuine direction, just doing what I do until I figure it out.
Thanks for looking, C&C welcome, and I'll be back with more awesome Nurgly goodness soon!

Possessed turned out great! I love how they went from a-ball-of-greenstuff-with-limbs to freaks of nurgle. Do the lascannon team next, cause I love havocs!
Your black legion plague marines, maybe you should change their leg trim to silver/steel, like in the codex. Sure the pads are a give away as to where they belong, but I would like to see abit more to set them apart from your normal plague marines.

@ Limbo- Glad you like how the Possessed came out. They were fun to build and (mostly) fun to paint. I always get into a slump after the adrenaline of a good idea. I'm pretty happy w/ myself that I actually finished them. Speaking of happy, you'll likely enjoy the rest of this update.
@ Ogryn- Thanks, I appreciate the compliment! It's always decent to get feedback.
Short update tonight because today was spent doing a lot of prep instead of hammering out paint. But I have a couple pretty cool things to share.
First is I've decided to at least prep the next Predator for the Death Guard. Mind you, I'm NOT making this a "project" just yet, I'm merely prepping this for the next steps. I might burn right through it this weekend or I might let it sit for a few months, hard telling right now. I had to take some stuff outside to paint so I took this with it to make the trip worth it.
I picked this very old RT era Predator up on eBay a while back. It is a complete mess:
It took me over an hour to ever so carefully cut the glue away from around the turret and separate it from the hull, but it was worth it. The side-sponson Lascannons are glued in as well. I'm thinking about finding some magnets to create some armament versatility. With any luck 6th Ed will allow for upgrades to different weapon types for the turret other than twin-linked Lascannons. But anyway, this is how it looks now:
There's a lot lot lot of work needed on that thing. I'm looking forward to it.
But before that happens I have another project that has a more immediate application for my Heavy Support options:
Death Guard Havoc Lascannon Team!!!
You may notice that this squad is different than the original squad I was going to have fill this slot. Two of the Marines are new, and all but 1 of the Lascannons are new.
The 2nd Ed and the RT models just didn't make the cut. They were replaced by these two new eager recruits who are looking forward to taking the fight to the enemy... at really, really long range:
Notice the old RT plastic Lascannons. I added the ornate muzzle attachment to give it a more "Chaos" look, and also to elongate the weapon overall. I was able to get some work done on these a bit, really enjoying this project so far and looking forward to getting it done. That said, I'm seeing things now "close up" that I didn't see before. Expect a bit more converting on these two, things like power cables, power packs, etc. Not sure what I'll do, but something more is going to happen w/ these before I call them "done"
The original remaining members of the squad are happy to have been chosen for the task and are well on their way to being part of the overall Death Guard force:
Model on left side is carrying an old RT Chaos Lascannon. I couldn't bring myself to add a muzzle attachment because the model is cool enough exactly as it is. The model on the right is actually a 2nd Ed Chaos Autocannon model. I already have all the Autocannons I'm ever going to need so a couple snips here and there to remove the obvious Autocannon things and a new muzzle attachment and suddenly I have another Lascannon to add into the Death Guard.
Here's 2 more shots:
I posted those just to make the update look bigger.
That's it for now. I'm working tomorrow and I've been running on empty for a long time. It's time for some quality sack time. Thanks for reading, C&C welcome, and believe me when I say MORE IS COMING! A lot more.

Oh wow. That Predator...good job on the clean up - tell me, does that front plate actually have an aquila on it? I'd not mind a decent photo of that - if only because that's scary good plastic moulding if it does which makes me wonder why they didn't keep that sort of thing up for so long.
26139
Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ DarkStarSabre- Yes, the front armor plate has an aquila on it. I'm going to be pulling the plate off before I start converting the vehicle w/ GS. I'll take a good photo of it later on because I am at work now, and if I do not post or PM a pic to you by Sunday, remind me here because as cool as I am (which admittedly is pretty cool) I'm still forgetful and irresponsible sometimes.

Masterful job on that predator, really sweet to see something so messy stripped and ready to be rebuilt. And yeah, I really enjoyed this update =) Only issue I have is with the two new recruits for the lascannon team, the ornate muzzle on their guns are to low, it'd look alot better if they were like the las/autocannon one. I'll be looking forward to more updates

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ Limbo- Uh... see, there's a problem there. First, I lost my pin vice so drilling holes is a lot harder. And second, I'm not sure I can get those off. I'll see what I can do.
@ DarkStarSabre- Here ya go:
After working all day enabling the ignorant and rewarding the arrogant I decided that when I got home I was going to knock back a beer. A couple beers. A few beers. Ok, whatever, hammer a 6'er.
And that's exactly what I did.
So tonight's update is brought to you by various Vermont microbreweries and beer goggles (same principle applies to painting miniatures)
I was on a roll and started painting the annoying bits I hate to paint on any Plague Marines. I got a lot done actually. Almost every model in this picture could be finished tomorrow:
And this is all I have left. This is every Plague Marine I have left. The end of this batch, months and months in coming, could be done very soon.
And this just sort of happened:
Oops.
That's it for now. I want to stay up all night and just do this stuff by man I am wicked beat and need some sack time badly. Tomorrow night I have a game and then some other friends coming over later. I'm going to be busy tomorrow. I'll catch up here as I can.
Thanks for reading, thanks for posting, C&C always welcome and appreciated, even when it makes more work for me like changing Lascannon muzzles.

Very impressive collection. I know that the newer models look "cooler"... but I think that a lot of the older ones had more "character".

Hmmm... I'm sensing a connection here, but can't put my finger on it...
Again, very nice.

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ inmygravenimage- I know exactly what you mean and actually wish I hadn't done that. It's a mixture of flat military green and some flat browns... that model looks more Nurgle than anything else in my force and the temptation to redo the entire army is as intense as it is sickening. I'm not going to repaint my army, but I am going to finish this model in the style I started him. Bad, bad idea on my part. But hey, glad you like it!!!
@ dsteingass- Hold on a minute... *walks to kitchen*...*comes back* ... you just made me go get another beer. I'm actually serious. I'm even taking a picture of it w/ this text up just to prove it. Look:
A couple of my co-workers read my threads on Dakka (because they are fascinated with the dorky nerd stuff I do) so I won't speak my mind freely here. Instead I'll use an acronym: IFHMJSFMAWRPABTMHTDWAFBIATTCBINTPAMKAWDOMSIASAWWFAFMYATIAGTQAMKMBOTWOTD. It's pretty complicated but I think you get what I'm saying.
Skipphag da Devoura- Kindred spirit from the very start! I really enjoy a lot of the new stuff (especially the plastics, they are so so so much easier to convert and express creativity) but nothing is ever going to be as cool to me as an RT Chaos Marine or an Oddboy being grappled by his Minderz. So much character, such perfect expression of the fluff... it's cool to meet someone else that digs on that stuff. Thanks for checking things out and posting!
So yay, a real update finally. And it's pretty cool, because tonight's offerring to Father Nurgle and his horde of gibbering Nurglings (that'd be all you guys... ha) is something I haven't done in a quite a while. Months, actually. February 9th 2011 if you really want to put a fine point on it.
For the first time in 10 months... *drumroll*....
....*still rolling*......
... *just go with it*.....
TA- DA!
An absolutely vanilla squad of Plague Marines with no special anything! Just plain ol' regular troops to fill out a few things like Havoc Squads or fill in an extra slot when I don't take a special weapon or an Aspiring Champion.
I really enjoyed painting these because I din't "have" to. It was slow and fun and got some work done here and there without feeling the stress or pressure that comes with a "project". This I did simply because I wanted to, and more is coming when I feel like it. Between work and other things in my life I'm really enjoying the "nothing special" moments I've been able to find here and there lately.
Here's some closeup shots. I haven't looked at the pics yet except to verify they aren't too blurry. I feel like I put some work and attention into these but like I've seen in someone sig... nothing makes a model look worse than being blown up to full-screen. Ha.
More is coming, sooner than later I expect. I'm thinking about my next projects and they are likely going to be less "fluffy", like a unit of Raptors and a bunch of Bikers. We'll see.
That's for this one. C&C (that stands for "Compliments and Congratulations" in case you were wondering) always welcome. Thanks for reading, I'll be back!

Jesus Skalk, how many points are you up to now?? Your army is looking great! I don't think I've ever seen a Death Guard army in such a vivid toxic green. @ SickSick6- I likely won't be doing that project unless one of those things just drops in my lap.
@ inmygravenimage- I'm not that motivated. I know that I would get excited about it, start it, get a decent amount done, and then it would sit on my Shelf of Shame for months, maybe years... possibly forever. If you go back through any of my P&M blogs you'll see pics of models I was wicked excited about... and then never see them again for months, if ever. Just admitting my limitations here. Thanks for the compliment on the new Plague Marines. Especially the backpacks, since those seem to "get me" the most when I don't finish some detail on them.
@ Tortured-Robot- Pred will be coming when I feel like I'm failing at getting anything done here because I can hammer out a vehicle in a couple days w/ pretty decent results. And as far as the RT guy goes, he didn't make the cut on the Havoc Lascannons, but his brother did w/ the Missile Launchers (old Conversion Beamer as ML proxy)
@ dsteingass- All of them
@ GreyDeathOne- I'm thinking 6,500ish but not sure, I'd have to do a recount. Suffice to say it's more than I can play all at once (unless APOC finally comes along)
@ Llamahead- Loot away! It's fast and simple, which are both important qualities!
Just dropping a reply tonight. I have some more work done but I've decided to wait until I have a full "squad" before sharing. But I'll leave a hint- think "old school". Think "15 years or more" ago. Yeah, you're ol' buddy Skalk did some digging and found a few gems to share.

I have to share this one too. THey have a free, unlimited blackberry that they don't have to pay for. Where in fantasy-land is this essential for business?
"I've been unable to send or receive pictures in text messages on my Blackberry even though this was supposed to be enabled from the time that I got the Blackberry. Please let me know why this is not enabled and when it will be working."
And this one:
"NYC - User needs loaner laptop or Desktop - as he left his laptop at home"
If I forgot my pants at home, I'm pretty sure they would make me go back home and get them, but you are allowed to be an idiot and forget the one tool you need to do your job and we'll give you a loaner.

@ Feldenglas- Can't wait to give you the flu, and a few other diseases as well. Bring your Space Wolves, I'd like the opportunity to thrash on the Emperor's Finest again. See you very soon.
@ Limbo- got your PM, will reply soon.
It's times like this where I wish the Death Guard had a catch-phrase battle cry like "BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!!" because if they did, I'd be roaring it right now. I'm wicked psyched to share this update w/ you all, and not only for the reason I promised above. I have an additional surprise that I think you're going to really like. But more on that later!
Oh, the suspense!
First up is the next installment in "vanilla" Plague Marines but with a couple twists. One obviously isn't "vanilla" at all, he's an Icon Bearer. And every model in this update is 2nd Edition or older. Oh, the good old days:
I will admit the old plastic Plague Marines are a bit cartoonish compared with the current plastic range (or even their metal contemporaries) but there's just so much history with them for me that I can't let them go.
(L to R) Old plastic Plague Marine converted back to as close to original as possible (the pickelhaube had been broken off and apparently the Plague Knife had been cut off. This model was an eBay rescue and no idea what the original owner did to it), Rogue Trader CSM, and 2nd Ed CSM plastic that embraced the love of Father Nurgle.
(L to R) Another 2nd Ed plastic converted to the winning team, 2nd Ed metal Plague Marine, and another 2nd ed plastic Plague Marine.
Now before people get too excited about the metal Plague Marine in the middle, understand that it is a REPAINT of a model I had already included in the Death Guard, it's NOT new. Here's what he used to look like:
Not a terrible job, but a rather inattentive one. Didn't pick out details like rivets (RIVETS!!), the flies, anything on his backpack, lame work on his Bolt Gun and Chain Sword, etc. Now it is complete. And it is the first model from the current Death Guard force to have its base converted from 1996 model train flock to 2011 rocks.
Next up is the "star attraction" of the newest squad- the mighty Nurgle Icon Bearer:
I put a bit more work into this that the other models. Blown up to full screen it looks horrible, but at "tabletop range" I can assure you it looks awesome! I really like how the Icon came out. I'll be putting this on the table very soon.
I know I have other things I could be doing like the Defiler and the Lascannon Havocs and the Khornate Chosen... but there's something really satisfying about getting some "rank and file" Marines out of the "to do" pile and adding them to the completed force. I expect I'll be continuing this trend for a while, so stay tuned!
That's it for this one! Hope you like the new stuff because I really do. C&C always appreciated, and if you like what you see here, tell your friends. Comments and readership really motivates me to keep going. Until next time, thanks for reading!
...what? I forgot something?
Hmm.
Oh yeah... you mean... THIS?
DEATH FOR THE DEATH GOD!
I am SO psyched on that model! It's my new Plague Marine Sorcerer and I love it! It started out as this:
It was completely by accident. I picked it up to paint some trim on it while I was waiting for something else to dry and realized that head appears numerous times in my army already, so I ripped it off. The I looked at the "claw" and it was the same thing, multiple instances of the same arm. Off it came. And upon closer inspection the Bolt Gun was from the old Khorne Bezerkers plastic kit. *snap*.
So there I was, holding a torso w/ legs. The entire thing looked lithe and weedy. Whatever. I tossed it onto the "I might get to this someday" pile and got back to work on finishing the squad above. Time passed, and for some reason I kept picking it back up. I had valid reasons for tearing it apart, but I felt kinda bad for ripping it up and tossing it to the very end of the line when I know it was psyched to have been getting some work done on it, maybe join the active force, and suddenly torn apart and discarded. I figured I'd rebuild it as a regular Marine and move on. As I was looking for bitz I saw the head (can't remember the company right now and too lazy to look it up) and had a vision of a Force-weapon wielding terror commanding forces across a blighted and devastated battlefield... the bitz came together quickly after that. WFB Chaos Knight arm, chop off weapon... add WFB Zombie scythe, dig through bitz box, Combi-weapon w/ Flamer... and GS. Must have GS to thicken him up and add some Nurgle bloat. And it needs a hood. With a spike through it. How aboiut a belt... a plastic zip tie will work. Belt buckle courtesy of the end of a WFB Zombie spear shaft. Backpack needs to be more epic and large, swap that... the banner pole is perfect, use that...
Cut / glue / sculpt / paint... and here are the results from different angles:
I really really really like this model. I could use is as my Chaos Lord as well, but I think I'm going to keep it dedicated to being a Sorcerer.
The phots do not do it any justice, which is a shame. I know I'm not the best painter out there but I used some highlights and MNM on the scythe blade and did some blending and drybrush... I put effort into this model. 100% spur of the moment inspiration that I saw through from start to finish in less than 12 hours while I was working on other projects at the same time. Pretty awesome.
That's really it for this one. I'm heading out for a while (social obligations and all that) but I'll be back tonight.
Thanks for looking!

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ inmygravenimage- Yeah, me too, especially when there wasn't a "plan" to being with. Father Nurgle speaks to me through plastic and metal. All I do is listen.
@ genom.cor- Yeah, I really like the old stuff a lot. I'm hoping to someday get my hands on for Forge World torsos, but unless they fall out of the sky I think I'll be spending my $$$ elsewhere. I'm more of a "bargain basement" modeler, I rarely buy something new / retail unless I wicked need it, and w/ those I don't, they'd just be awesome.
@ Tortured-Robot- ... dude, all of my modeling moments are random.
@ Llamahead- The zip tie was pure happenstance, I was looking for... anything, was thinking about using a chain, moved some junk out of the way and there it was. I'll be doing that again for sure!
@ Limbo- FOR NURGLE!!! Yeah, I like the sound of that. "Death for the Death God" is kinda fun though. I plan on roaring it as loud as I can the next time I play (fair warning to Kalt, Feldenglas, and Daichallar).
Hi folks. Was just sitting in the back room painting the trim on my next batch of Marines but wasn't "feeling it", was more "paint by numbers to get it done". I stopped for a bit and started thinking about what exactly I have left to do. I have the Khornate Chosen squad, fiddled w/ them a moment and knew they weren't up next. Dug around my bikes, only have 2 of them, need 5 more, that's not going to work because I only work on a full squads at a time... same w/ the Raptors. Really want another Land Raider and eBay has quite a few in my price range but they aren't here right now... plus I need another project sitting on my bench like a hole in the head.
And then, there it was. Passed over for months and months, I decided it was time to get started on the Defiler.
As you can see I've already chopped it up pretty well. I'm debating if I want the CCWs to be the huge claws that came with it, or if I want to model them on the arms of the Giant that will be playing the roll of a Nurgle Daemon.
And yes, there will be a LOT of GS on this. I'm expecting to use most of a tube, but that's ok because this project is exactly why I bought a space.
More coming soon!
EDIT- What do yo think of this? Too much? Awesome? Let me know.

In answer to your question, yes. It is too much. TOO MUCH AWESOME!
I am actually looking at doing almost the opposite. I have ordered most of the pieces of a defiler, I don't have the bits yet, so I can't really see how they look together, but I am looking at putting Daemon Prince arms on the regular defiler torso for the additional DCCW's. Do you think that would look silly? Do you know if they are too small or not?
Anyway, I would go with just the one monster claw, it just gives that powerfull look. 2 might make it seem silly. but then again, I can't tell for sure until I see it. Automatically Appended Next Post: Nevermind! I just saw this picture you posted. I like it with both monster arms!

@ dsteingass- Thank you.
@ Henners91- I have a soft spot for the older stuff because that's what I started out with, and you never forget your "first". I admit that the newer models are amazing with detail and flexibility regarding conversions, etc... but I'll always think the "true" Plague Marines are the originals that came out back in the day.
@ RSJake- Wow, you actually looked at my GALLERY? I need to be more stealthy w/ posting pics before I update here. Thank you though.
Well, RSJake beat me to it, but yeah, that's where the Defiler is right now.
Here's a closeup:
WFB Giant playing the part of my Daemon, will be heavily converted by the time I am done, thinking about making it look like a GU1 or maybe just a really big Plaguebearer, not sure which yet.
It's really "messy" right now, that's going to change when I get home. Interesting hobby note- Gray Stuff hardens WAY faster than GS does! Like you'd better know exactly what you want and not fuss about with other stuff while using it.
Completely off topic, but if you do a Google Image search for Rogue Trader Plague Marines a huge number of my stuff I've posted here pops up! Who'da thunk it? I'm famous!
More coming soon, thanks for looking!

I like the close-up! I actually saw it posted in the ModelingVows for December thread.
I do the same thing though. i usually upload my pics in the morning before I leave the house, and then update threads at work. Sometimes there is a 2 to 3 hour gap between uploading and posting!
I would spend more imte in the Galleries, but I find it very difficult to navigate.
I find the same thing with Gray Stuff. I like that it cures faster, I hate grabbing something that isn't cured and I have to re-do what I just stuck my fingers in! But then again, I do VERY small bits on my models at a time. It takes longer, but it allows me to have 5 or 6 different projects going at the same time, and that allows me more room to deal with my 40K ADD.
Congrats on being famous!

@ inmygravenimage- Maybe he can go on the Nurgle Revivalist Roadshow
@ RSJake- Oh yeah. Forgot I posted that there first. Ha. Serves me right to be sharing my work in other threads before I post it on my own. And as you'll see below, I learned my lesson w/ Gray Stuff. I've developed a distinct respect for it and I'm going to have to practice more before using it in such large quantities (which is unfortunate because I bought it specifically for this project)
@ Llamahead- Thank you. I have a lot of respect for your conversions so knowing you are liking my work is a solid indication that I'm on the right track. About that Plaguebearer though... it didn't work out.
@ dsteingass- Hmm. I hope that's not in a "driving an axe through the door and peering through the hole w/ a completely psychotic gleam in my eye" sort of Jack Nicholson way.
@ Tortured-Robot- The "Double Mega-Smasher Arms" survived muster and are now a permanent part of the model. Not sure I like the pose, but wayyy too late for that now. And speaking of LOS... I can't wait to play against *named removed for sociopolitical reasons* and have him say "I can see the top portion of the left claw. I'm shooting at it with my entire army". Sometimes dynamically-posed models are not as cool as they look.
@ Hyenajoe- Your command is my... uh... command. See new pics below.
@ zadelistol- Dude I wish you were still around. Been thinking about you a lot since I started on this.
Ok! Time for another update! I've been busy on this, and it's the only project I'm focused on right now (aside from painting trim on Plague Marines that haven't joined the force yet while I'm waiting for something to dry). This is turning out to be quite the project and I don't think I was really aware of just how massive it would be.
I went back though this blog and found a few entries of when I first started to hint at this project:
2010/12/03 00:20:41 - And a teaser of things to come in the distant future- tonight I scored a total steal on eBay. I'm not going to say what it is because I'm going to do it completely behind the scenes and then present it in a comprehensive "step by step" photo log all at once. The only hint I'll offer is I'm crediting Bigdobbo for the inspiration. This one is going to take a while but once it is done it will be the most amazing piece in my army and possibly the most complicated conversion I'll ever do. Depends on how it goes.
That was over a YEAR ago! Man I drag my feet sometimes. But I nailed it when I said this would be one of the most amazing pieces in my army and very complicated conversion.
2010/12/08 23:51:38 - I mentioned a few updates ago that I was going to start a super top-secret OTT conversion that was going to take quite some time to do correctly. Well, the model the conversion is based on arrived today. I have mapped out what needs to be done, what I need to do it, and what I expect to have when I am finished. The good news is that I'm stocked up for this. I bought some more Gray Stuff last week, I have all the parts necessary to build the model, I have a clear image of what I want the end result to be, and I'm motivated to start working on it.
See? Bought the Gray Stuff specifically for this. Glad it doesn't have a short shelf-life!
2010/12/12 13:15:01 - In other news, I have some work done on my super top secret Project X. I will say that I was very unhappy when I really sat down and started to look at the base model. Previously I had taken a look at it to say "yup. it's what I bid on" and set it aside. I was finally starting to move the concept in my mind onto the miniature and see how much of it would transfer and what changes had to be made, what first steps would I need to take, etc. That's when it it became obvious that before I was going to get any work done on my vision I had to undo almost everything on the model. It had to have been glued by an unsupervised novice with no idea how basic modeling works and was convinced that 1 model = 1 full tube of polystyrene glue. I spend over an hour just cutting the model apart so I could repair and rebuild it to meet my standard and needs for the model I am going to make out of it. I actually got so sick of it that I gave up on everything and burned up a couple hours playing a video game just to readjust my head and not wind up hating this project.
Feh. There's a lot of work to be done on this. But in the end I expect it will be worth it.
Gaahhh! I remember what a mess this thing was when I got it. Another eBay rescue (I think I paid $10 for it or something ridiculous like that) but WYSINWYG sometimes. This for sure was not. Ugh. It's working out pretty well so far though. And yes, so far it has been worth it.
Ok, enough of the ancient copy / paste that makes my update look a lot more impressive than it really is... on to the new pics!
Significant changes, eh? I decided to go with a more GU1 look because I just could not imagine a Plaguebearer being THAT big. Sorry Llamahead. I did try it but it just wasn't working out for me. With a WS of 3 it would have made more sense (WS3??? It's a Daemonically possessed Uber-Dreadnought! It should be WS6!!! Curse you GW!)
The GS at the bottom of the model looks unfinished, and it is. I did a mock-up of the model again and you can't even see that part when it is all together so I didn't put much effort into that part. The intestines bursting from a massive incision was done specifically for Hyenajoe. See? Sometimes feedback DOES make a difference!
I wish I had done a better job w/ the stitches, but from 2 feet away it looks fine. This isn't being entered into any contests. In fact, let me take this moment to run my modeling skills into the ground and "boo hoo hoo" again- man, I suck at sculpting. I get away w/ slapping GS on vehicles because it's supposed to look icky and draped. But trying to take a blob of ... of... hey, what IS Green Stuff anyway?
So yeah, my modeling is fortunate happenstance at best. There are things that I've tried to do on purpose, like the creases on the left arm, that looks decent enough. And the intestines are at least a reasonable representation of what I'm going for. But overall what is working out is mostly due to fortunate accident. I have absolutely no idea at all what I'm doing.
That said, I'm pretty happy where things are and I have a good feeling about this project. I'm getting a lot done and it's turning out better than I could have hoped. It's still a Chaos project, I have an idea and it doesn't come out exactly as planned, it just goes where it wants. So far my Chaos Gifts have all been beneficial. Must be rolling well on the random generation table!
Here's some closer-up pics:
I think the guts turned out really good all things considered. The paint will define the success, but as it is right now it's obvious what they are supposed to be and it was worth the effort to try and make it happen.
The face looks goofy to me. Maybe it is the nose, or the sort-of-but-not-quite smile? I'm going to be filling that maw full of teeth and will likely sculpt some eyebrows downturned so it looks more angry. What I am going for it to make it look absolutely berserk insane. I can imagine the Daemon all happy and excited about being summoned into Realspace and ready to knock in some heads, then suddenly being bound by magicks and surgically fused to the mechanical frame. I imagine that would be enough to set anyone off really.
So yeah, it has to look way more OTT insane and angry.
Since I am trying to model it into a GU1, I figured I'd take a comparison shot and see how things were coming together.
I don't know why, but they seem to be cheesing it up for the camera, like they should be holding beers and yelling "WWWHHOOOO!! PAR---TAY!!!" or some other inane drunken fratboy catch-phrase.
I'll say right now that I don't like the GU1. It looks like a cartoon. But anyway, there's a side-by-side comparison. What do you think?
That's it for this one. C&C appreciated. I'll be back soon with more!
*edited because I didn't proofread before posting and apparently ignored the words with big red lines under them. Duh. *

Yes the jolly face... he does look rather happy!!
(from the pics POV) I would cut the eyebrow from the left eye, and as you say, remodel it a bit more angry looking, should be simple enough.
For the squinty right eye I'd be a bit more drastic, yea?- I would drill straight through the eye ball leaving a hole, yea?, using a modeling knife I'd cut into the sides of the hole making "wound marks" , yea? - maybe even continue the wound to the cheek, yea? .........Then I'd fill it with greenstuff maggots. Awwww!
As for your greenstuff skills, the only thing I have learned is sculpting fur is easy- and Fur Covers All!!

Yes. I would join the frat that has those two buggers in it. I think he's coming along nicely. I do like Tortured-Robot's idea of drilling the smaller eye out and leaving the seeping hole. I would also suggest maybe stretching some green stuff from his head along the base of the horns. I think that may make more of a gradual transition. Those are my two cents. Either way he's looking awesome, Skalk.

Looking great! Very Nurgly! Don't forget pustules and boils and such! I'm sure you won't but it must be said!
The stiches look fine! If later, you still are not happy with them, take very small rolls of GS and stretch them across the parts of the stiches that are drawn together, and shape them like they are sewn into the flesh. I don't have any pictures to show what I mean, but maybe if you need them I will draw something to illustrate it.
Keep it up, it's coming together nicely!
P.S. I think I remember that auction a year ago or so! I wasn't in the market for one at the time, so I waited a year to start looking...And paid around 3 times the price just for the bits...but then again, I can assemble it how I want to, so it's all good! (it was still cheaper than buying it in the box!)

@ inmygravemimage- I love beer, but I doubt I'd want to try Nurgle's House Porter
@ Tortured-Robot / Moltar (hey man welcome back!) / RSJake- All good advice and I followed a lot of it. See new pics.
@ Llamahead- Man I'm just striking out on this one. I had to go w/ the "angrier" look. But maybe he's the "happy" kind of angry. I agree that the fluff describes Nurgle as a more jovial kind of Chaos God (nurglings are downright funny in some of the stories I've read) But between the Dark Mechanicus and Chaos Sorcerer binding and bonding it to a weapons platform, I imagine it may have lost its sense of humor.
Ok, here it is- GS is finished. Next time you see him he'll be primed and ready for paint:
I added a new right eye and carves the plastic out a bit and added an "eyebrow" for effect, I think he looks a lot less happy now. I covered over the left eye but left enough of the socket to show there was one there once, it's just scabbed over now. I changed the shape of the mouth a bit, then gave it a new rim / lip and addled ridiculously-sized teeth. I cut down the nose a lot so it isn't such a bulbous clowny nose. I draped some extra skin over the horns to smooth out the transition a bit, I added huge pustules for that "icky pus squirty ewww" look. That's it. Done. If it's not on there now it's not going on unless someone recommends something awesome and I get a lot of pressure from everyone else to do it.
Here's the "detail" pics:
That's likely it for a while. Tomorrow night I'm working late shift (I'll be on Dakka but likely won't get any work done tomorrow) then Friday I have to go to my wife's stupid dummyhead holiday party, and then Saturday night we have to go to MY company's stupid dummyhead holiday party AND our friends are having a bonfire that night that I'm not sure I even want to go to.
Feh.
Anyway, update on that chassis / weapon platform- it's coming along but is much less exciting than the Daemon part of things. I'm keeping the chassis clean and uncorrupted. I want a specific delineation between where monster stops and machine begins. Plus I already tried to GS it and it looked horrible so i used more trying to fix it and it got worse and worse so I ripped it all off and now I'm going w/ a clean chassis and no I'm not changing my mind because I am terrible w/ sculpting and I'm not looking to "practice" on this model.
Pics will be coming soon. It is likely not going to be the "day-glo" green the rest of my army has, it will be darker and grittier and nastier. The Daemon will have the dayglo, but the machine will not. Probably not. Maybe not. We'll see.
And with luck I might have a surprise later. I'm really hoping so. It would be really really awesome. Keep you fingers crossed.
That's it for this one. Thanks for looking, way more coming. I might surprise you all w/ some new Plague Marines sooner than later, I've been keeping busy between drying glue and drying GS. Because we all know I need way more Plague Marines.
Automatically Appended Next Post: And an update from my post earlier about a surprise if I was lucky. I was.

@ RSJake- Thank you on both counts. I'm really excited about the Land Raider. Just added another 220pts to my overall force, and the firepower it brings it disgusting. I'm going to go with the basic setup, but this time I'm going to magnetize the side sponsons in case 6th Ed gives Chaos some options. Sometimes I think CSM are more Codex Astartes than the Ultramarines! Talk about 33 flavors of vanilla. Oh, I forgot... I can add a Havoc Launcher! Whooo... whatever. I can't have a Havoc Launcer AND a twin-linked Bolter... pick one. I can't have anything except Lascannon side-sponsons (because we all know Chaos would NEVER use something DIFFERENT). Gah. I'm so ready for 5th Edition to take its place in history next to Windows Vista and Jamaican bobsledding.
@ Tortured-Robot- Agreed. I'm getting over it.
@ Hyenajoe- Yeah, Machinator does awesome work! He's a Dakka member as well, check out his threads.
Updates! I did some painting done last night because I knew the next few days are going to be lame. Here's what I got done:
PRIMED!
Detail really came out on this! Shows the GS I did wasn't nearly as horrible as I thought. Scars look good, ox marks etc coming out nicely, good job overall! You'd never guess this started out as the upper torso of a WFB Giant.
GREEN INK!
The ink really brings out the recesses and detail. Face still has a bit of goofyness left in it, but it's not as happy as it was before. I'm seeing some things I don't like here, but moving on.
DEVLIN MUD!
More shadows, more detail, starting to really like this a lot.
GRIFFON SEPIA and TENTACLE PINK (guts)!
Oh yeah. Yes I like this. A lot.
GUN METAL!
Keep in mind all of this is just initial work, but I'm really glad to be on painting now. So so much more horrid horribleness is on the way!
Next update in a couple days at the earliest. I hate the holidays.
Thanks for looking!

@ RSJake- Thank you! I am honored to know my work is horrendous!
@ dsteingass- Yes, it really is.
@ Ogryn- I'm really excited about seeing this finished. It's a massive model. On of these times I'm going to use some other miniatures next to is for scale reference.
This is ridiculous. I should have been in bed a couple hours ago. But no, I'm obsessed. I want to skip work tomorrow so I can get more stuff done on this. This weekend is going to suck because I have no modeling time.
Enough whining... UPDATE!
This is just a mock-up for an idea of how it is gong to look, monster and machine are still 2 separate pieces. That will change before too much longer, though.
Closeup of the converted weapons system. Twin-linked RAC, Battlecannon, and twin-linked Heavy Flamer.
Closeup of the Daemon. I think it is working out really well.
Thanks for looking, I have to go to bed. I don't want to, I'd rather drink coffee and keep going until I fall asleep in front of my painting table w/ a paintbrush in one hand and a model in the other (it's happened). But I'm off to be "responsible" because I'm going to be at work all day and out all night tomorrow for my wife's stupid dumb holiday party.

Patience, patience. It's all coming. The paintjob on this is going to take many hours to do correctly.
I'm hoping to have it done no later than next Friday because 1> my new Land Raider will be here, and 2> I have a monster of a party weekend planned (and unlike other social activities I've had to endure, this I'm wicked looking forward to and am going to enjoy a lot). I'll have some modeling time here and there over the next week, like tonight after i get back from the party, etc.
There's a lot of changes coming. When this is done I expect it is going to be similar (in paint job) as my Daemon Prince:
It will not have the glossy stuff on it, but it will be similar in coloring and blending.

haha, yes, fantastic stuff, its going to be one fantastic model!
I really like the effect you get with the green, is it really all just inks?
The guns look cool, it maybe just my odd mind but is anyone else getting a "flasher" vibe from this? thinks its the arms and the groinal location of his guns
looks great!! dont sleep!

@ Tortured-Robot - I'm looking forward to the guys seeing this on the table. Of course it will likely get blown apart before I get to use it for anything (my Daemon Prince draw and enormous amount of attention when it shows up, and it took 3 games before it drew any blood at all). If I could Deep Strike this thing, I would. I might hold it in Reserve, but yeah, coming in on the last turn isn't going to give me much idea on how well it works.
@ dsteingass- I appreciate and respect the philosophy, but it seem like I'm hastening that final moment by not sleeping at least a little here and there while I'm still alive. Besides, I get grumpy and shaky after 36+ hrs. That would affect my paintjob for sure, and I don't need to remind you of this:
@ Commander Cain- Wow, thank you! I really enjoy bringing the past back up to present (be sure to check out Tortured-Robot's Chaos Marine Renegades for some great RT conversions if you haven't already). This has been my most favored project I've ever worked on, and over a year later it is still as relevant and active as it was when I first started it.

Sorry, I guess "horrendous" was a bad choice, but I got tired of saying that it was disgusting, which it is, and in a very good way. I'm sure you knew what I meant, and that I meant it as a compliment. I just wanted to explain it.
Anyway, it is really looking great! I had assumed when you were working on the torso, that the daemon's big mouth was going to be the cannon! But you are also putting the actual cannon on it! Cool!
The painting is really looking slimey and rotten and gross, very Nurgly!

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ dsteingass- At least it was mostly balsa, and the plasticard was salvaged for the next attempt. No rivets, though. I'll get back on that project after a while but obviously I'm distracted elsewhere for a while.
@ Llamahead- Funny you should say that, I had no knowledge of Plague Hulks until yesterday when i was doing a Google Search for Plague Marine Defiler to -steal- find other ideas on how people have done similar projects. The FW model looks AWESOME but on my honor I'd never seen one of them. My primary motivation for this project was due to a Nurgle Soul Grinder Conversion I saw by Bigdobbo. I wanted mine to be different but am now realizing that I have (inadvertently) created a Soul Grinder w/ guns. Whatever. It looks awesome and will command a lot of respect.
@ GreyDeathOne- I have no idea what I'm doing with all of this or what I want to do. It's out of control. By the time it is done I'll be fielding an entire Legion. And thank you for the compliment, I like that miniature a lot!
@ RSJake- I took that as the highest compliment! Horrific, disgusting, horrid, wretched, sickening, etc... all words of praise and admiration when it comes to a properly done Death Guard. I apologize if I came off as taking offense, I most certinally did not and if I actually HAD, I'd have PM'ed you because I think calling people out on threads is bad form and speaks of ill breeding.
So... I'm at work and I'm sick of working but I don't have anything new to share, so I'm going to try to derail my own thread (sort of, anyway) by taking a trip down Plague Marine Memory Lane. Here are some of my favored models from this project so far (in chronological order) for your viewing pleasure. It's sort of like when a "Part II" movie comes out and uses "flashback" scenes from the first movie.
Cliched and immature... but when I converted this Plague Lord in 1997 he was flipping off a very specific Eldar Phoenix Lord and that sentiment remains still today. The body is from the plastic Terminators that came w/ the 2nd Ed Space Hulk game, the head is from a metal WFB Ghoul, and the arms are 40K 2nd Ed Chaos Terminator.
One of my very first Champions. He was converted from a 40K 2nd Ed Sergeant (from the W40K box w/ plastic Space Marines and Goff Orks). I used a WFB Skeleton breastplate to bulk and bloat him out a bit. The Marines behind him are also from the 2nd Ed Space Marine plastics. I was short on $$$ at the time but long on miniatures I'd never use for anything else, so they formed the original Death Guard. Father Nurgle claims all in the end.
Rogue Trader Chaos Terminator as my Chaos Sorcerer. I do not always use a sorcerer model but when I do this is who steps up. Part of my original Death Guard, has seen as many battles as any of my other miniatures. I like this miniature a lot and I have multiple copies of it, the other two are part of my World Eaters and Dark Lords.
The center model was painted in Nov 2010 but the other two are part of the original lot I picked up back in 1995 (I think, 1996 at the latest) and have long been part of my Death Guard. I wish I had a few dozen of these. Yes, the pose would repeat over and over but they are just so cool... and of course I'd convert a few just because.
Another 1996 / 1997 project, this is the very first vehicle I dedicated to Father Nurgle. The paint job I've done on the rest of my vehicles is very similar, but I hadn't discovered the "spiky right fender" idea yet. The paint on this model looks very dark, but it's actually dust. It's been cleaned off since then.
First major conversion of my current Death Guard efforts. My friend Feldenglas stated that Plague Marines were disgusting and had re-breather tubs up their butts. Soooo... hahah.
The mighty Daemon Prince! He displaced a Daemon Prince I had in my Death Guard originally. This looks way, way better. I should take a pic of the other one becasue if nothing else it is a cool model for what it was... this is just way more awesome better.
First completed Havoc Squad (Heavy Bolters) dedicated to the Death Guard. I was hoping this much firepower would help me mow down Feldenglas' 'Nids. I played this squad a couple times and found them to be painfully ineffective against Orks. Haven't been back on the table since but that could change if I get the chance to play a really big game. I really like the conversions in this and I enjoyed bringing the past up to current.
The original Rhinos I converted from Dark Angel to Death Guard. It was the first time I used spiky bitz and it became a standard later on (I did go back and put them on the Rhino missing them in this pic)
Rogue Trader Chaos Marine converted to Havoc Autocannon. The conversion was simple enough, but the transformation was amazing. You can see the original model here for reference.
The Birka Dreadnought, completed when I was at Birka 2011 in NH. Ha. Painting even while on vacation!
I don't need to explain this one.
Havoc Missile Launchers. Every model is RT and completely awesome. I used the old Plasma Cannons and Conversion Beamers because I was sick of Chaos not having weapons in 5th Ed that they used to have, so I'm including them now with "counts as" rules until they come back (if they ever do... man I hate 5th Ed.)
Took me months to complete, but I'm very happy with the final results. Still have yet to test their mettle in battle, but I'm thinking that might happen soon.
Most recent model I've finished and I am really happy w/ it. May go back and redo the mask, am less happy w/ it right now than I was before, but overall it's a great model.
Hope you enjoyed this trp down Plague Marine Memory Lane. I'll likely do this again around the same time next year.

Nice work! First time I've seen this thread, haven't looked through it all yet but will do. Like the old school stuff, got some of those myself. One thing that did catch my eye was your land raider - what did you make those tracks from? Got a couple of old land raiders which I aim to 'Nurgle' at some point and want to change the tracks to something more appropriate.

(Before I start any replies... WOW! Thanks for posting!)
@ RSJake- Ok. So long as things are cool.
@ Hyenajoe- Thank you, it was an inspiring process for me to turn regular Space marines into something I wanted to play with. And I'm still doing that, it's just less obvious thanks to the new plastics. I had to scrape to finish the Plague Marines I built, and some of the parts came from models never intended for Chaos, let alone Papa Nurgle.
@ Henners91- Yeah, I do too. Blame tipios and Limbo for goading me into it. It's almost time to do another one, I have a completely different idea this time that I really want to try. I see another AoBR plastic Dread in my future...
@ inmygravenimage- I'm not sure I'll ever top that Land Raider. I still have work to do on it like a Trophy Rack and other little bitz here and there. The new Land Raider I just scored on eBay should be here by this weekend, it'll be a while before I get to work on it because I want to get tracks from Machinator. I'm going to get these tracks this time just to change things up.
@ GiraffeX- Thank you on both comments! I'm really excited about the Defiler, it's coming along and it'll be done in a week or so tops.
@ JBrehaut- Group photo AND updated point list coming soon (this time with "bare bones" list and "all possible mods / upgrade" list... I'm going to try to break 7,000 points).
@ Llamahead- I really appreciate the compliment. I'm not a huge fan of spikes spikes spikes. They have their place here and there, but they can get a bit ridiculous.
@ monkeyh- Thanks for the compliment. I checked out your Gallery and WOW you do AMAZING work! Your conversions are stunning and your painting skill is sick. I'll be taking some time later to really check your stuff out. Thanks for checking this out. The tracks are by Machinator and he's one of the most amazing sculptors on Dakka (which is saying something because Dakka has a lot of amazing modelers). Check his stuff out. Great selection and prices. You get more than what you "need" if you don't go all the way around (like under the track hull and whatnot) but you do still need 2 sets. The extra bits are good for scenery or spares in case you break something. Not that I did that, just sayin'...
@ Tortured-Robot- You know I think you are the Master whenit comes to bringing Rogue Trader era models to modern life, so thank you for the compliment on the old Daemon Marine models. I really (really) like those a lot and wish I had a few dozen of them so I could experiment w/ conversions and not feel like I'm slashing apart a piece of history.
@ dsteingass- A new and updated "Class of 2011" photo coming up very soon, I want to finish up a couple squads and the Defiler first. But be assured I'll be updating my "overall army" photo, AND also going to update my list to include basic bare bones point cost and also the maxxed out wargear as much as I can carry list. I'm hoping to break 7,000 points.
@ GreyTauKnight- The conversions are possibly my favorite things, but I feel i haven't done them enough in this force. I could have put more work into the bloat and rot of Nurgle... but I don't feel i did a bad job at all. The Plague Marines that have been there longer have more rot and bloat. A lot of these Marines are new recruits. Literally. Ha.
Again... WOW. I think that's the most replies I've had after a single post. Thanks a lot to everyone that posted!
New update! With pics and finished work and everything!
I have another squad ready to go. In fact they are already on the shelf and have taken their place in the Death Guard. One of the photos came out bad and I didn't notice until after I was at my computer, and if you've been following this thread for any amount of time you know that once I put the camera away, that's it. So I hope it's not TOO bad... just pretend the models look awesome and it'll be ok.
This squad includes a flamer, I found the model in a drawer with my paints. Not sure how he got there, but he's rejoined his mates and is looking for some hot times.
Again, sorry for the blurred pic.
So I'm surre you're all thinking "Geez Skalk, you've been cranking those squads out lately! What have you got left to do?"
Well funny you should ask, because I took a pic of that as well. And because I enjoy doing this sort of thing to give this project some perspective, here's a quick flashback to January 17th 2011:
That's an awful lot of unfinished Plague Marines.
Here's what I have left (DISCLAIMER- when I took this pic I forgot I also have 8 Chosen that are represented by the Lost Berzerkers, but they aren't in the Jan 17th pic either so it evens out, but still offering full disclosure)
Yup. That's it. 15 models (plus 8 Chosen) and a few stragglers like Typhus and probably a few others. But wow, it's been a wicked project so far, eh? Ha.
And now what everyone is looking forward to- update on the Defiler!
Not a lot of work, at least not clearly evident. I did a lot of cleanup work on him, smoothed out edges and blended some colors better so it looks more like a swirling mass of diseased Daemon flesh instead of patchwork splotches. I also fixed some join lines that was showing up in some spots where I did the GS.
I figure another week or so to finish this. Here's 3 pics for the most recent work.
I think it is coming along really well and is going to look amazing when it is done.
That's it for this one. I have to stop posting my updates at 1:30am. But whatever. Good morning to all my European friends on their way to work at the moment (hope your day goes by well) and congratulations on making it through another work day to my Aussie friends. Time to tip back a lager!
Thanks for reading and replying, it's really great to get feedback and to know that people are enjoying what I am doing here.
More later, thanks for reading!
...
Oh yeah. I played a game w/ Feldenglas yesterday. It was wicked close, 11 to 10 his favor. But his victory was tainted by the loss of Grimnar whats-his-name and his entire security entourage.

The Defiler is looking great! I really like how you have your ranged weapons set up, I will most likely do that with the main cannon on mine, but I'll leave off the other ranged weapons, did the cannon go on the lower chassis easily? Or did you have to make modifications? I just got my Defiler last night and I haven't fit it together yet.
Anyway, your army is looking ACE! Keep it up! You are an inspiration to all of us who never get anything done!

When I started this thread it was as motivation to keep my CSM off the Shelf of Shame. Some dork necro'd the thread and it got locked, but you can check it out here if you want. Tales of shame and woe, of brilliant ideas that became the bane of your modeling existence, of exciting projects that lost their luster before they were completed and are destined to be dust collectors until your kids throw them away after your estate sale.

By the way, is it just me, or does this look awesome as it is?-

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ Tortured-Robot- Yeah, I think it looks pretty awesome. It would make an excellent vehicle just like that. But even as lax as my gaming group is, someone would call "foul" on modeling for advantage. But really... the original Defiler model looks stupid. It's right up there with Khorne Berzerker Scouts and 2nd Ed Ogryns. And it was LAZY. The couldn't even model a twin-linked Autocannon that wasn't mounted sideways? Incidentally, that same Autocannon fits really well into the Land Raider (in the same spot where the stock Heavy Bolter goes) but can Chaos change out weapons? Nooooo. Man I really hate 5th Ed.
Tedium, thy name is Defiler! Wow I am so sick of this project right now! I spent the entire night so far just painting the bronze tr of the chassis. Driving me a bit nutty really. Same same same over and over and over and not even 1/2 done. The end result will be worth it and no I'm not giving up, just woah... this is how projects wind up on the Shelf of Shame.
But progress is being made!
And some more work on the Daemon. You likely won't see it because it's minor stuff, but it does look better.
If you were wondering just how large is this model... well, here you go:
...and finally, a crossover to my Cultist thread...
From July 4th 2011- "I had thought about adorning the banner with a number of things but decided against it as the story behind it (everything in this army has a story behind it) is that this is a holy relic from a time long past and it has been maintained in it's most pure form. It'll make more sense later."
Yeah. Holy Relic from the god that shall return one day and lead them to victory.
Anyway, that's it for this one. Thanks for looking!

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ Hyenajoe & Tortured-Robot- Thank you. I had no idea what to do with it at first. I thought about covering it w/ GS but the trial run looked terrible and I spent over an hour getting it all off. Duh. Next time I'll try Femo if I'm not sure. Anyway, after that disaster I thought about painting it the same way I do my other vehicles, but that would make one huge bright green model and I didn't like the idea of that either.
So I went back to my Chaos roots and used the very first color scheme I ever painted- steel and bronze. I have a huge collection of Chaos Warriors in this scheme, and my first CSM force was a homemade Iron Warriors offshoot called the Dark Lords. I gave up on the lame name and the trite fluff, and since they are all MkVI armor w/o any specific "Chaos" to them I could run them as Astartes if I wanted to. But I digress.
The color scheme was solid and clean, so I wanted a chassis that was the same. I decided to not replace the armor plates because they clutter things up, and really the armor could be used for better purposes (such as the cover on the converted Battle Cannon... just bent it into shape and centered it over the plastic tube I was using in place of the original Battle Cannon) I also decided to have a very clear separation between Monster and Machine. The fact that I'm working Monster and Machine as separate models really drives the idea that I'm doing this right. There will be a fusion point once I finish chassis and daemon, and will be much like the arms (huge mechanical thing fused into the physical form of a huge scary supernatural thing).
I will say that I'm getting closer to being "done" but not necessarily "finished". I tend to get about 50% to 90% done and then set it down for a long time (like the Land Raider), maybe use it in some games but completely lose interest in it as a modeling project. I'm trying to avoid that this time but realistically I'm giving this a few more (modeling) days before I attach the body and go from there. Let's hope that "done" actually means "finished" this time.
Probably no updates tonight as I'm going out after work, and this weekend is jammed with activity Fri and Sat. Hoping to do some work on Sunday if I can. And no doubt I'll post a "before" pic of the Land Raider that should be here in a few days.
Over a year later and the Death Guard thread still has relevance. I'm really enjoying this army still and I'm glad that people still find it interesting.
Thanks for reading, back later with more love from Papa Nurgle soon!

Post by: RSJake
Yep, it's really looking great! And I was thinking, you CAN use it for a Soul Grinder if you need to! You have the cannon, which could be the "Spitting Maw", and the other guns can count as the "Harvester" gun the SG's have! WIN!
What kind of tube did you use for the cannon BTW, I am thinking of using a Bic Pen tube. I am currently working on assembling the legs for my defiler, I'm not impressed with the way the pieces fail to go together cleanly. More clean-up than I like. But oh well.
26139
Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ GreyTauKnight- Thank you. Yours is pretty horrific and disgusting as well.
@ RSJake- Hmm. I hadn't thought of that but yeah, that would totally work! Yay me for the 2 in 1 win! As for the tube, it's a really small diameter PVC tube, I can't find the rest of it right now but I know that is what it is made out of at least. You're not going to be happy w/ a Bic tube, the plastic is the "wrong" kind (all soft and weird, plus it doesn't glue or hold paint well at all). And I have no idea about building a Defiler, all I could do with this one is rip apart the glued stuff and jam it back into place as best I could. Come to think of it... like really think about it... I cannot remember the last time I built a model new right out of the box. Maybe 2 years ago (WFB Corpse C....
...
AAAGHHH!!!
I just figured out how I'm going to make my Palanquin of Nurgle and what I'm going to make it out of! Man that was wicked! I was thinking about the Corpse Cart and out of nowhere *WHAM* I put it into 40K and it became a Palanquin of Nurgle!!!
Great. Another project.
Ordered these just now:
For sale on eBay by Machinator. Really good stuff. He also sculpted the tracks I have on my other Land Raider. Really looking forward to this project. I learned a lot from my last attempt and will not be making the same mistakes twice.
I'm still shaken up by that whole Palanquin thing. Talk about an idea right out of thin air. I really have to give that a go. I'm almost done with the Defiler and the Land Raider is going to be here w/ tracks before the end of the month, so maybe I'll pick one up on eBay and hold it in reserve until it's ready.
Man I'm psyched about that. Wow.
Thanks it for this one. I'll be back soon!

Palanquin idea is one I'm looking forward to. Hmm might loot it myself. To me the Defiler chassis could do with some rust and verdigris. The orange of the rust should contrast rather nicely with the green flesh of the daemon although if you wan't to keep it clean and tidy fair enough.

@ DarkStarSabre- True. I need more options in my HQ plus I think done correctly it will look really sick.
@ GreyTauKnigh- They are worth the money. One of my friends said that my Land Raider actually hurts to hold.
@ Llamahead- I'm looking for one on eBay right now. I can pick up the bits for $14 and I'm going to use heavily converted WFB Zombies as the Bearers. This project is going to happen, I'm excited about it already.
Huge update tonight. Not in new model painted, but the new updated total of everything I have that is playable in my current Death Guard.
Here's the list in its entirety:
HQ
Daemon Prince w/ Mark of Nurgle and Warptime
Daemon Prince w/ Mark of Nurgle, Wings, and Warptime
Chaos Sorcerer w/ Mark of Nurgle, Melta Bombs, Personal Icon, and Warptime
Chaos Lord w/ Mark of Nurgle, Terminator Armor, Personal Icon, Melta Combi, and Daemon Weapon
ELITES
7 Possessed Marines w/ Mark of Nurgle and Champion
8 confused Khorne Chosen w/ Mark of Nurgle, Aspiring Champion, 4 Melta Bombs, 4 Power Fists, and Melta Gun
7 Chosen w/ Mark of Nurgle, 7 Melta Bombs, and Aspiring Champion
1 Dreadnought w/ Multi-Melta and Heavy Flamer
1 Dreadnought w/ Plasma Cannon
1 Dreadnought w/ Twin-Link Heavy Bolter and Missile Launcher
7 Terminator Champions w/ Mark of Nurgle, 5 Combi-Weapons, 3 Power Fists, 2 Chain Fists, and Heavy Flamer
7 Terminator Champions w/ Mark of Nurgle, 5 Combi-Weapons, 1 Power Fist, 4 Chain Fists, Lightning Claw, and Reaper Autocannon
TROOPS
149 Plague Marines w/ 20 Special Weapons (9 Plasma Guns, 7 Melta Guns, 4 Flamers) 4 dedicated Icon Bearers, and 16 Aspiring Champions (7 Plasma Pistols, 1 Combi-Weapon, 10 Power Fists, 6 Power Weapons, 6 Melta Bombs)
3 Rhinos w/ Daemonic Possession
FAST ATTACK
3 Chaos Spawn
HEAVY SUPPORT
20 Chaos Havocs w/ 4 Lascannons, 4 Autocannons, 4 Heavy Bolters, and 4 Missile Launchers
2 Predators w/ Lascannon Side Sponsons and Twin-Linked Bolters
1 Vindicator w/ Havoc Launcher
1 Land Raider w/ Twin-Linked Bolter (and Daemonic Possession if transporting Terminators or HQ)
1 Defiler
SUMMONED DAEMONS
2 Greater Daemons
14 Lesser Daemons
Grand Total= 8,734 points
So yeah. APOC anyone?
The above lists absolutely everything I have, including the unpainted models that are slotted for the Death Guard (amazingly there are only 24 unfinished models out of all the above). Not included in this list is the new Land Raider on the way, plus my newly-discovered Palanquin idea, and a finished model that is illegal in current list (has Plasma Pistol and Melta Gun).
Here's a pic of my original Daemon Prince from way back. It's on a square base because that's what it came with. After taking the pics I realized that I really should have cleaned the dust off it. Oh well. The weapon is a new addition as the original weapon broke off at some point in the past and I have no idea where it is.
Defiler is looking really good. It's propped up for the photo, isn't finished yet.
Wail and despair 'o Imperial fools! The might of Nurgle is upon ye!
Super-special THANK YOU going out to ktbb22 for many hours of help w/ this project. Without her help there's no way I would have cataloged all of this correctly.
That's it for this one. I'm tired and going to bed. Catch you all soon, thanks for reading!

Have to say Skalk that is one impressive Nurgle army! Mines not even half that size - yet. As you like ideas for new projects - what about a plague tower? (These really kick ass and are tough as old Nurgle boots!)

@ LoneLictor- Thanks for checking this out! Another week or so and the Defiler will be done!
@ monkeyh- Hey, welcome back! I'm pretty impressed w/ myself that I've accomplished THIS much and have maintained a decent quality of work for all of my miniatures. None are ever going to win a contest, but they all look really good on the table top. My next projects are likely going to become bigger and bigger in size but focus on less models, like a Plague Tower, Plaguelord Super Heavy, and maybe even a scratchbuild Titan. The Death Guard are the predominant force in my collection now, which is ironic since my intent was to simply fill them out a bit so they would be more effective in my Black Legion Crusade Force. The entirety of my Crusade Force (Black Legion, Alpha Legion, Iron Warriors, and World Eaters) equals about 1/2 of my Death Guard. Depending on 6th Ed we'll seee if the Death Guard continue to expand or if I pick up a new interest. I've always been a fan of BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! but I haven't put much time into my Khorne Berzerkers. I have quite a few that need to be finished. I wish they were not so 1-dimentional. It relegates them into a purely support role instead of being played as a primary force.

The sheer amount of green ink involved in this.
I bet you HATED them when they discontinued it, eh?

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
@ monkeytroll- Indeed it does. And it only now occurs to me that I need to change my numbers a bit before Yggs stops by and tells me that 149 divided by 7 = appx 21.28 squads, and that my Havocs need 2 more Marines per squad, so really I need 14 more Plague Marines and 1 more Aspiring Champion to make 22 full squads of Plague Marines and 4 squads of Death Guard Havocs. And then there's the issue that 26 isn't cleanly divisible by 7....
@ Llamahead- Thank you very much (especially for noticing the backdrop, it took quite a while to set all that stuff up!). I'm hoping this serves as inspiration for you to take some "family photos" of your stuff as well, you've been busy and it has been a while since I've seen an overall shot.
@ JBrehaut- The 2nd photo is my new wallpaper on my work computer. Ha.
@ Tortured-Robot- Why are you posting on Dakka? You should be working on your RT Chaos Marines! Get to it, Mister! ...just kidding. Well, sort of. Thank you, though.
@ weetyskemian44- "like an army of pustules covered in snot. " Aww, you say the sweetest things! Thank you! And I wish I had more "old school" in my army. I'm thinking the last 15 models I need to "fill out" the force with the right numbers are going to be long in coming so I can get some classic 2nd Ed and RT in there.
@ Moltar- Thank you. But no one has mentioned the most brutal and gruesome part of that picture yet- the wretched peeling wallpaper! Father Nurgle has infected the very fabric of the house I live in!
@ DarkStarSabre- Oh man... talk about tearing the scab off an old wound. Yeah, I was CRANKED about that. I used Green Ink and Flesh Wash over it. I will admit I like the new washes better for most things, but having to find a new mix for ink was a pain and even after trial & error error error I still didn't get it "right" again until recently. At least 40 Marines and 3 vehicles are darker than I wanted, but that's my own fault. It fits the theme though, varying degrees of rot and pestilence.
Wow, thanks everyone for commenting! It's really appreciated, and it keeps the motivation high.
Open question to everyone (even the lurkers / sightseers that don't post)- I'm making a Palanquin of Nurgle. Should it be on a 40mm base or 60mm base? I looked in the BRB, CSM Codex, and online. No definitive answer but many opinions vary, so I figured I'd go with consensus here. Will wait 2 days before going with majority vote.
Again, thanks for stopping by, and more is coming soon!

Well Epidemius comes on a 60mm round base, so 60mm.

Wow. That is the most "duh" moment I've felt in a while, and that is saying a lot.
1) I didn't see this while looking online
2) I didn't even know this model existed! Was this a White Dwarf thing?
So I guess that was a short vote. 60mm it is.
*edit* Additional "duh". It's a Daemon so I'm guessing it's from the Daemon Codex and / or WFB Daemons?

@ logg_frogg- I have to say the painting method does lend itself to very fast units. I haven't posted this in a while, maybe ever? This is how I paint my Death Guard:
1) Flat white primer (actually I just use the $1 per can flat white from Wal-Mart).
2) a "home brew" 2 to 1 mix of green (two parts) and yellow (1 part) of inks from Privateer Press. If you try this, experiment with the mix on something that is primed w/ the same flat white you are going to use on the miniatures (preferably sprue for the real effect) and change your mix acccordingly to make sure you have the look you want on your miniatures.
3) With a larger brush (one that is trashed, doesn't have to be a 'nice' brush) and liberally wash the miniature with your ink mix. It will look brighter and greener when it is first going on. Once it settles and dries you'll have that bright bilious look. If you don't want to wait for the miniatures to dry completely, you can 'cheat' buy using a hair dryer on high heat - low air setting (I do this frequently when I'm really hamming on a project). If you see that you are blowing the ink around or off the miniature the air is too strong, back the dryer off a bit.
4) Wash models with liberal coat of Dev Mud to darken recesses and give some depth to help identify areas on the model. Allow to dry completely (or blow dry)
5) Paint the details you want like armor trim, weapons, eyes, etc.
6) Wash entire model with GW Griffon Sepia. Allow to dry *completely* (or again, blow dry)
7) Final wash with GW Devlin Mud if anything is looking a bit light in the armor joints, etc.
Seven steps for Father Nurgle!
You now know every secret I have to painting my Death Guard.
@ GreyTauKnight- thank you, that explains a lot. I never got too excited about the Daemon Codex.

I'm also considering making my HQ on a palanquin - naturally I have one of the old RT type ones. I thought the reason the latest version of the palanquin was on a 60mm base was because he is a massive daemon?
I was thinking 40mm for me as he is only a csm- plus he can still fit into a landraider.

I know exactly how that feels and proceeded to buy a metric crapton of Dark Green Ink before they discontinued it. I've also found a local Hobbycraft that sells acrylic inks which happen to be spot on matches for GW inks, and though they cost about £5 over here they're at least 5 times the size of the old GW ink pots - I even went and bought one for black ink (as that's what I use to base most things now...).
Nice recipe too. Mine for the old Blighted Brigade was much more...simples.
1) Basecoat Dark Angels Green.
2) Layer with Bestial Brown
3) Layer with Snot Green
4) Layer with Snakebite Leather
5) Layer with Bleached Bone and stipple patches of Snakebite Leather while still wet.
6) Wash with Dark Angels Green
7) Wash with Flesh Wash or Chestnut Ink.
8) Paint the metal - tin bitz base, boltgun metal, flesh wash.
Produces a similar effect though! If only we didn't have that ocean between us....

I only said a 60mm base as that is what Epidemius comes on, but from what I understand, if you have an older model that's on a different sized base (terminators being a good example) then it's OK to use them on whatever they originally came on. This is good news as otherwise you'd have loads of gamers having to modify perfectly good minis by fitting new bases, also because a smaller base gives you a bit of a tactical advantage in that it can fit through smaller gaps between terrain features!

Now I'm confused because that makes sense. Gah! I'm usually better about stuff like this. I miss the old days of 20mm round and 40mm square.
Ok, opening back up to opinion. Does nayone actually *know* this? I can't find anything in the BRB, and as clearly illustrated here... opinions vary. It would make sense that it's on a 60mm base because it's a masssive model, but would that still be a "legal" Land Raider transport?
60 or 40? Thoughts?

That's a very impressive army Skalk, Id say 60mm base for the palanquin. I think the old ones came on a monster square base.
I have a plan for my Nurgle lord that I'm going to count as either a palanquin or bike not sure yet.

Post by: GreyTauKnight
well the rule for the palanquin says it can fit in a land raider, i would say use the base that helps get the model on the base, example i had a daemon prince come with a terminator base, rule says use base they come with but i had a larger base to put him on, i think i read somewhere you can add them onto larger bases then what they came with to make scenic bases and such, i would have to look it up
http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Basing_Guidelines_for_Warhammer_40,000 (found an article on dakka they say 60mm)

I thought there was a rule of thumb that any model's base size can be increased to your liking (except for Canis Wolfborn), but you cannot decrease the size below the base that the model came on. Something about decreasing the number of close combat enemies with a smaller base is prohibited, but you can have as large of one as you want. Just keep in mind, the larger the base, the more models can come into base contact with it. I could be wrong though.

@ DarkStarSabre- I've bought 2 each of the P3 Green and Yellow ink in case they stop making it. I cannot fathom what I would need w/ so much, but considering I've already used the equivalent of 2 full tubes, I'm only a project away from needing more. Nice recipe for nastiness! And yeah, that whole "ocean" thing has been bugging me for a long time. Europe and Scandinavia have the best Metal gigs on the plant and I'm stuck between Montreal CA and Boston USA. Ugh.
@ GreyDeathOne- Quality over quantity, my friend. And I'm not against playing w/ unpainted models, they just lose -1 to all stats.
@ monkeyh- All my Terminators are 2nd Ed so they have the original 20mm Round. I don't know what to use here because there's nothing to gauge against. Does the Epidemius kit come w/ round and square bases like the Bloodthirster does?
@ GiraffeX- Thank you! It's been my love / hate relationship for the last year. Looking forward to seeing your next project, you do excellent work.
@ GreyTauKnight- I checked that link, thank you.
@ Moltar- I think I remember reading that as well somewhere. I'm just looking to see if I'm "upsizing to" or if I "have" to be 60mm.
@ logg_frogg- Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for sure!
My schedule changed singnificantly today. It's going to affect the time I have to work on projects for a while. Good thing it's been a flurry of activity for the last few weeks, really happy about how much I finished up. So very few models left, so close... ha. The Shelf of Shame has no place for the Death Guard! I'll finish up the Defiler as soon as I can, and I know I'll be charged up when the Corpse Cart stuff arrives for that Palanquin. But I really need to finish that Defiler first. And the Land Raider w/ tracks will be here soon as well.
I'll be back soon w/ more Nurgle awesomeness!

Hey Skalk, you have a bunch of predators (three, it looks like?). Have you used them in triplets? I'm considering buying a predator or three, and I'm not sure how effective they are over traditional Heavy Support options. I love the idea of laying down a barrage of lascannon fire.

Really like your standard bearer As for the question about what Epidemius comes with base wise, not sure as I don't actually have him (yet) but I think models that can be used in fantasy battle aswell (don't know if he can) normally come with both bases. Sorry if this confuses you even more!

@ RSJake- Thank you, I really do appreciate it. The enthusiasm people show for my work is a genuine motivator to keep pressing forward with progress, and to also strive for higher accomplishments. Without feedback I'd have nothing to guage myself against. My IRL friends are cool but they don't provide much feedback on my projects. Such a stoic and taciturn lot.
@ monkeyh- Thanks! I'll get some paint on it soon. As for the base, I'm going to go w/ a 60mm base because no one will complain it is too small and it affords me more modeling options. I have an idea that is quite twisted and I'm going to max out my painting skills to pull it off properly. I'm not going to WIP it, I'm just going to do it and then post here. Will be in Jan sometime.

@ Tortured-Robot- I'll likely leave the "past" in the past. But I promise if I start using him in 40K I'll change the base to round.
@ monkeyh- I really want to try APOC. And I'm sort of ready for it. Apologies if I have forgotten, but have you seen my Plague Zombies from my Cultist thread?
That's 100 Plague Zombies.
Last night I got home from work and decided to celebrate the victory of making it through a pre-holiday week by getting some work done. I dabbled with the Cult for a bit, abjectly ignoring the Defiler (not sure why, I'm just not into it right now) and cleaned up the bench a bit. While I was cleaning the bench up I found the broken Chaos Bike that Daichallar gave me quite a while back, and I also came across the Space Marine biker that came w/ a box of junk I bought on eBay a long time ago. I used him recently for a scale comparison for the Defiler:
For the first time I put rider on bike, and all of a sudden I wanted to just work on it a bit. You know, see if I could fix it up, maybe even build it a bit and figure out if I'd even be interested in doing anything with it.
Usually I take pictures of things when I first start them. I have to say that of all the times I did not take WIP photos, this is the one I regret the most. But it is what it is, and at least I have the pics I have.
I did this in one sitting, from bare plastic to finished model.
The handlebars / top front of the bike were misssing. I made the handlebars out of a wooden dowel, the "headlight" was replaced with an Icon of Nurgle, and check out what I did for the speedo / tach:
Anyone recognize what that's made from? It was perfect for what I wanted, and I even made and effort to put some detail on it. I tried to get a "power" look for the Power Maul but I think I just made a drybrushed / 1/2 highlighted mess. It is what it is, and it likely looks better to other people than I think it does.
I like what I did w/ the Plasma Pistol:
I was going to try OSL but I got scared and decided not to. But still pretty happy w/ it. I added some Blood Red to my Boltgun Metal to achieve that weird pinkish / red metallic look.
Final shots w/ everything. I really like the banner pole. Simple but effective:
Overall I am really, really happy w/ this model and I am w/o a doubt going to grab 6 more and make a squad of them. I realize Fast Attack is not really a Plague Marine thing but it's in line w/ my intent to have at least 1 of every thing available in the Chaos Codex .
Plus this was the most fun I've had modeling and painting since my Chaos Sorcerer. Yes I know I need to finish my Lascannon Havocs and my last squad and fill out my Havoc squads and get working on my Land Raider and get some Obliterators in my force and some Raptors and and and and.... it will all happen. I just took a side road and arrived somewhere I didn't expect but it was awesome.
More coming soon, thanks for looking!
