Typhoon missile launchers with the little wings found on a land speeder, an ironclad (leg armour and the main body), 2 assault cannons (don't know where from for that), some plasticard and gs. I have no idea about the piece on top. Maybe a part from the Baal or one of the new Leman Russ sprues?

I'm guessing Baal predator for the assault cannons, but yeah, couldn't place the top piece either.

Post by: Flinty

The assault cannon are actually naked Venerable Dreadnought weapons. For some reason the venerable dread arms are multi-part. To allow the ornate side panels to be cast I guess. But they were the chunkiest ACs I could find.

The top of the torso is a combination of the Dreadnought top rear armour plate (put on backwards) and the new Furioso Magna-Grapple thingy (attached the right way round but wthout the grapple parts, hence the gaps). I left the resulting gaps in the plates to represent space for transformation. A happy accident as filling the gaps effectively would have been murder

What are your plans for the canopies? The Viking will be painted (obviously), but will you paint the glass on the Goliath as well?

Yeah, I'm planning on painting the canopies on both the walkers and the Diamondback as well. The clear plastic on the Goliath was more to ge the canopy contour, rather than to be all clever with materials .

Wow.

Way back in the Brood War days I wanted to do something similar to this but never got anywhere with it. I have since been desperate to see someone else try it, and holy $%^& have you delivered.

Everything is fantastically executed and I envy your converting ability (and ability to source pieces!) on every single model.

If I were to offer any criticisms at all, it would be that I find the Goliath's legs a little too bulky and tall, and that the Dark Templar (thus far at least) doesn't fit the imagery as well as it might (tattered robes rather than armour).

But they are minor at best and this project is amazing - I signed up to this forum to congratulate you!

Now get some paint on them

@Malus - I'm touched that you joined just to post in my thread The Dark Templar will be getting a cloak of some kind when I can get my GS juju on again. Also paint will probably have to happen soon

@Bloodhorror - No Zerg here I'm afraid. Tyranids are already too close.

@Swordwind - The Zealots are mostly Tau-based with a Marine torso. however if I could afford a Manta (or anything Manta sized) then I would definately have done the Dropship already

@Tipios - Thanks Another missile launcher on legs it is

I look forward to seeing more. Is it just painting now? Or have you some more plans?

Progress is kinda slow just now due to the imposition of real life (blech).

In-flight Viking below:

Other things to finish include filling a whole load of gaps in a lot of infantry and the Viking. Another thing I would like to do is a Hellion to act as an attack bike for my Bikers. However I really need a Falcon turret and it has been hard finding one separately anywhere... If anyone has a spare one drop me a line. I'm sure I've got something useful somewhere we could swap

Ahoy! Just back from holiday and managed to dig my modelling stuff out briefly to play today. Please welcome the results of my footling today, the Hellion class attack bike

Obviously I haven't fitted the rear wheels properly yet, but its definately getting there. Its a bit bigger than the normal attack bike and it rides a bit higher, but I rather like the ffect compared to the original SC2 model.

The turret Multi-melta can be swapped out for a heavy bolter if required. The major difference to the SC2 version is the offset cockpit position, but it took so long to pick up a Falcon turret that by god it will have to do Also I added the requisite twin linked bolters on a "shoulder" mount as I couldn't really think of anywhere else to put them and they help cover a gap.

Next tricky thing to do is to help disguise the joint between the turret and the landspeeder rear section. I need to add in some air intakes somewhere as well.

Thanks guys

I've almost finished the thing now, but pics will have to wait until nasty work is finished for the week. Key issues were sorting out the join between the falcon turret and the Landspeeder. this has been done with a wacky mix of GS, plasticard and hiding behind random stuff from my bits box

Heh. Its a bit late unfortunately. Definately not planning on changing anything at this stage (unless there is any handy Medic reference pictures in there... still need to sort out some kind of rear torso armour/powerpack thingy).

So I managed to find some more time to finish the Hellion off. The turret is magnetised so it can rotate and the weapon is also magnetised to swap between HB and MM. I also added an extra magnet on the back as somewhere handy to stow the other weapon when in the box

It leans back a little bit more than I had hoped, but otherwise I'm rather chuffed with it.

(I'm not suggesting it would be cost effective to do so, I just mean it's well enough designed to be really credible.)

Post by: Flinty

Thanks guys

I can't take any credit for the original design as it is "borrowed" from Blizzard

By far the hardest bit to get was the Falcon turret... took me weeks! Eldar are obviously at a low ebb right now. None of the bitz stores I could find carry the things just now and E-bay doesn't appear to agree with the sale of cheap falcons

Otherwise its a few bits and bobs off a Marine Landspeeder (which you can get cheap) and the old Guard dozer blade support system for the front and rear suspension. I also used half of a Sentinel chassis underneath to liven it up a bit but don't appear to have pictured that. The engine intercooler/turbo head/thingy is the rear of a Tau Ion Cannon that I added just to fill the gap and the bolters are ancient things from 2nd ed that I found in an old box (couldn't find any more modern bolters to add, but I actually rather like the effect).

The wheels are from the Old Crow Slingshot AFV that I hacked up for the Siege Tank/Vindicator. The turret and fuel stowage are similarly Old Crow products.

Damn... does that mean I need to try and start painting again?

Terran Deathwing WIP (WIP Vulture Bikes 21/07/13) @ 2011/09/11 20:44:02

Post by: Flinty

Thanks guys

@Rookie1 - The grey is Adeptus Battlegrey washed with Badab Black and then highlighted back up through Battlegrey to Codex Grey. The legs are a little different as I tried putting the Codex on before washing, but I prefer the first method. The blue is something I've had for ages and is unmarked. Its very slightly darker than Enchanted Blue. The blue is then washed with Asurmen Blue and highlighted through Enchanted Blue and up to another unmarked blue I probably got out of the Space Marine paint set in the early '90s

The shiny bits are either Dwarf Bronze with a chestnut wash, or boltgun metal with a coat of Armour Wash.

Thanks guys. Progress is being delayed by constantly having to tidy up to show people around my flat, but I have plans, oh yes, plans...

Some recent work I did was dirtying up the test marine. Really happy with the leg chipping, not so happy with the shoulders as they just look smudged and manky now. I do have some ideas of how to redeem the shoulders though which might ge sorted out this weekend with a bit of luck.

@Rogue Wolves - Originally I was going to give the visor a quick swoosh of gold, but I have run out and now the bronzey colour is growing on me. The white balance on my camera may not be doing anything for it though...

Just found this thread and have gone through all of it. You sir, are an amazing human being.

If you don't mind, I would like to steal your process of making marines. My cousin (who does not play Warhammer or anything like it, but does play Starcraft) and I have intentions to build a diorama of the Brood War opening (once we have money).

If said plans ever reach fruition, they will most likely show up here first, and credit will of course be given where it is due.

Thanks guys! As always the encouragement goes a long way to assisting in doing more painting

I've touched up the original shoulder pad chipping a bit more and I'm a lot happier with it as it has a bit more structure.

I've also finished off Tychus and his little friend

The suit number has been distressed through a combination of slight overpainting and actual physical damage as recommended by CURNOW. The freehand on the other shoulder was kinda fiddly and probably as good as I'll ever be able to get it, so it stops here

Half-assed OSL has been added around the cigar. Could probably be better, but it does the job for me

Ahhh... the smell of trimmed plastic... so good!

After 6 months off for a ridiculously extended house sale/purchase I'm back in the saddle (well the mancave at least). New house and new work area and new plans for a gaming room (that will probably take another year or so to realise, but I can dream).

So I have abased myself at the altar of the mighty E-Bay and have picked up the following kits for a reasonable price:

Defiler
Stormraven
Valkyrie
Whirlwind
Sentinel

In the immortal words of Rolf Harris - can you tell what it is yet? Hopefully at least 3 new SC2 themed units will emerge from this pile 'o bits to be added to the Terranwing arsenal (possibly never to actually be used, but hey).

Guesses on on a postcard

Some more updatitude, and I've had a bit of time (in between stopping the Reapers) to do some initial construction and dry fitting. Still waiting for a couple of the kits to turn up so progress is slow to begin with.

Here is the new man-cave, destined to be my home from... erm, in... home until we can get the garage converted.:

As no-one has really tried to guess that much I may as well ruin the suspense.

First up, and probably the most easily realised, is the Banshee ground attack craft:

I will try and recess the cockpit in a bit to smooth out the forward profile, but I rather like how it looks already. This will count as another land speeder to go with the Diamondback, but this one will be a Typhoon... obviously

Next steps are to try and find some appropriate looking ducted fans to provide lift. The tail assembly will be coming from the Stormraven. I will more than likely be trimming the fuselage down a bit to slim the whole thing down, but I will awat the stormraven to get the hull properly aligned.

Next up is the Odin!

Yeah, ok, so I've only really got a leg sorted but its a start! I am planning on bulking this guy out a lot with the Stormraven hull to make it beefy enough for it to count as a Land Raider Helios in stompy robot form. I've been keen to join the defiler-as-other-stompy-robot club and this eems like an ideal opportunity I'm a bit disappointed with the lack of poseability in the legs, but then I reckon I've been spoiled by the newer Sentinel legs

I've gone for the Helios as the armament is pretty similar to the Odin in purpose. A couple of twin linked AT cannon and an over the shoulder artillery launcher. I will be reforming the Whirlwind launcher to look more like artillery cannon, rather than missiles. The only slightly weird thing will be the transport capability. Its also not actually that useful as a transport for the Deathwing with a capacity of just 3, but that might allow me to do some Spectres to go with my Ghosts

Thanks guys.

Unfortunately last week was a bit of a bust modelling wise. I had to go to London with work for a few days and the rest of the time just seemed to evaporate. Also Royal Mail seems hell bent on denying me access to my stormraven bits :( Need to phone them up and see where in the system my parcels have been stuck.

Anyway as some solace, rather than doing great and grand things, I made a hatch... Its something at least...

Well, the Odin's nuke needs to hide somewhere when its not being launched

Nice space! You might want to replace that lightbulb with a daylight bulb though. The conversion is looking good too!

Terran Deathwing WIP (WIP Vulture Bikes 21/07/13) @ 2012/04/09 16:47:57

Post by: Flinty

Thanks. The main bulb is rubbish, but I now have 2 pretty good work lights closer to the desk. Added together its something approximating daylight... kinda... but as I spend more time modelling than painting its a bit academic at this point.

After a truly horrible week or so at work the Easter break was very welcome. Spent most of it walking up in Glencoe (another stretch of the West highland Way ticked off) but just had a nice solid chunk of time to play with the plastic

And so this is progress on the Banshee. Its turning out to be rather larger than a normal land speeder, but I don't care Theoretically I could also run it as a Vulture for my Guard.

As well as all the other kits I've had to source some additional random gubbins, primarily involving large Warmachine bases to do clever (maybe) things with.

This is the first time I've been able to sit down with the Stormraven kit and see what I can scavenge. And I am rather happy so far! Here is the new tail assembly for the Banshee:

Unfortunately for me the tail is really thick plastic. Thankfully its not particularly hard plastic so I was able to drill and carve out the gaps relatively easily, it just took time and effort I'll probably try and use the stanchions as supports and put some kind of rotor on there as well.

Here was my main clever idea though. I ran through every kit and as many after market sellers as I could find, ubt no-one seems to like doing ducted fan assemblies. I guess they are a bit finnicky and lots of thin parts probably don't cast up that easily. So I picked up some Warmachine bases to use as fan housings. The largest ones work nicely for this particular creation, but you could also use the slightly smaller ones for more actual land-speeder sized things.

I've added some small aerofoils that I'll shape a bit more when I'm closer to finishing the thing.

The other main bit of work I did today was to ceate a recess in the underside of the forward fuselage to fit the cockpit canopy. I messed up the other side a bit, but nothing a bit of GS and a dark colour scheme can't hide

There is a bit of a gap at the top of the canopy to fill as well, but again I'll wait until the thing is closer to completion to decide on a solution.

So the following 3 pictures show the thing dry fitted at this stage:

The Chimera turret will be used as a housing for the top gubbins for connecting the fans to the fuselage. It also helps break up the top a bit more as it is currently a bit sparse. I'll probably trim the rear of the forward fuselage a bit to help tie it into the tail section better and then will need to do something in Plasticard to fill the gap, but it shouln't be too difficult.

Still happy with how its all going. All comments and criticism welcome before I start gluing it all together irreversably

Post by: Flinty

As always,thanks for the encouragement

The bits on this one are even more random than normal, given the wide variety of parts available from the kits I've got. I'm also extremely happy about how easy the thing is to fit together, so far at least. I have yet to finish the fuselage fitting at the join. Still quite a large and oddly shaped gap, but it is closing slowly.

Last night and today I managed to get a bit more work done on the Banshee and I'm really happy with the results.

I got the top gubbins sorted with a Chimera hatch, Sentinel engine stacks and some Marine tank bits:

I also moved forward with the fans. I think I've sorted a way to fix them on securely by using the Stormraven tail aerofoil.

Its designed to look like all the worky gubbins pass through the aerofoil, rather than needing a big engine in the centre of the fan. I will try and bulk up the upper surface a bit with something round on both sides.

I will be inserting a plastic tube through the fuselage to fit the fans to. I might also try magnetising the fans a) to allow funky swivelling shenanigans and partly to allow for easy storage

I've also got the landing gear sorted out, so all I really need to do now is to close up the sides of the fuselage and fill any remaining gaps. I think I will leave the fans as clear, to make it look like they are actualy spinning, rather than having snap-shot stationary blades. But I might also try to slot in some clear plastic. Still pondering that one

Fair point, you got me there! The Valk kit was started way back in 2010, so it's been much more than a year

We're getting a couple of modellers on board and they need projects, so I guess getting a couple of variations on the valk could be a good starter for them.

Love the tail on your conversion, very commanche-esque!

I was thinking commanche when I was doing it, in between the hand cramps and the trying not to slip and eviscerate myself with the modelling knife!

Also if you're looking for other variations on the Valkyrie, have you seen the air assets from Mass Effect 3? There are some nice gunship and aerospace fighter concepts in there.

@Warmill - May I say that I LOVE your stuff, Very creative and useful stuff, but your pricing system is confusing...and it alientates potential buyers like me.

the PUP itself is priced reasonably, but how does adding a walkway around the PUP justify doubling the price?

If a walkway is worth the same as the PUP, then you should give a better price to encourage more orders,
But your exponential pricing system makes me feel like I am paying more for less.

Ta.

I did some more on the Banshee tonight, including setting up some GS to magnetize the fans, gluing the main fuselage together and fitting a bit of tube to stick a big ass metal spike into to use as a flying stand, but my man-cave is now filled with glue fumes and I need to get to bed, so no pics just now

When everything has dried (and ventilated) I'll get some more pics.

Next up is to get the fan mounts fitted securely and get some sides on the thing. Shouldn't take much longer to complete. Maybe get it finished off at the weekend. Then I need to paint it of course (that and the rest of the army)

Terran Deathwing WIP (WIP Vulture Bikes 21/07/13) @ 2012/04/12 21:51:45

Post by: Flinty

So thats the fan mounts almost complete. Just waiting on some GS drying for one side so I can fit the magnet.

Again I'm really chuffed at how this thing is coming together. I'd be lying if I said this is how I originally envisioned it, but it is almost evolving on its own now as we come to the final stretch.

Anyway, on with the pics...

Stuff added yesterday and today include magnet mount points on the fan units, Axles in case I ever want to model individual fan blades, A support system for the Banhsee as a whole and to secure the wings to the fuselage and some rear landing gear. Apologies for the angle, but it was the only way to get pictures without it collapsing sideways

(I'm secretly in love with the way the fan mounts pivot... Yaay for big round magnets )

Stuff left to do obviously includes gettin the other side sorted out and the big gaping holes in the fuselage stopped up I might also try and fit in another set of hardpoints somewhere in case I want to use it as a Vulture at any point... 4x large blasts? oh, yes please

Thanks guys. Always nice to get encouragement in my psychosis

@ lone dirty dog - Its amazing, the GW range has basically every shape and texture known to man. You can pretty much pick up a pre-formed part that will fit nicely, or at least fit well with a bit of trimming and plasticard or GS.

This is cross posted from the P&M forum as a permanant record.

So the little beggar is finally finished!

The Banshee class close support VTOL (counts-as Land Speeder Typhoon). It ended up being a bit bigger than strictly necessary, but the bits went together so well I couldn't bear to try and trim it down any. Includes parts from the Valkyrie and Stormraven kits along with some trimmed down Warmachine bases for the ducted fans. The fans and the nose turret are mobile and removable using magnets. The next challenge is to get the base to keep the thing stable

I also magnetised up the nose a bit more on the off-chance the 51st Dunedin Division need some air support in the shape of a Vulture Gunship

And with some options

The left hand lascannon is a bit wonky, so I might go back and fiddle with the magnet placement a tad, but otherwise its good

Now to get it primed!

Thanks, as always!

@lone dirty dog - It does look rather mean (if a little front heavy) with all the roclet pods added Also its not a turret. Its a housing for worky gubbinz with a couple of exhausts com,ing out of it. It helps hide the join where the chop shop has done its work on the chassis

@Bobthehero - Yeah, the Ghosts are the furthest away from the source material. The sniper scouts are hard to fiddle with though as the torso , arms and rifles all come together in various unhelpful parts. I might get around to doing some Spectres that could ue your suggestion, though. Also I think Nova came out ok. Doing her hair was fun

@Rawson - On reflection I think I will paint it up and call it a day. It would be more of a fiddle to add in now and I don't think I would ever be able to make them robust, so I'll just need to be careful with where I put my fingers

Flinty, it's wonderful to see you back at work on one of the best themed armies here on Dakka. You have taken one of the world's most recognizable games and translated it almost perfectly into 40k. The new Banshee is just fantastic, BTW. Honestly, some of this has inspired me to do some doodles for a Protoss force, possibly as GK or Deathwing. I look forward to seeing your next update.

Out of interest: How many points does your current force stand at?

Just a small update with my objective deployables pretty much done. The RFAC is finished, but Flaming Betty needs a tank job. In the game its yellow, but I don't like yellow that much, so I am considering alternatives

After I get them finished its back to base-coating the Banshee

Automatically Appended Next Post:
@ odd one out - Thanks always gratifying to see that other people like my randomness as much as I do.

Protoss are a tricky one as their main foot soldiers don't have guns, so that kinda rules out GKs. An elite Eldar force with lots of wraithguard and wraithlords? Zealots as howling banshees and immortals and suchlike as the wraith units?

The force can now be bumped up to 2,000 I think. Certainly 1850 with ease. Its come rather a long way from the "oh I want to make Ogryn alternatives" that I stated with

Just checked. Almost 2500 points and a rather full Force Org, although that does include a Land Raider variant and a stormraven

All the grey has now been badab blacked up a bit giving it a slightly darker, less even tone. Now to drybrush the poo out of it to get the kind of dusty matt look that apaches always tend to pick up.

Also I finished both objective markers (I'm even realtively happy about the yellow):

The painting of the Banshee continues. I got my colouring order a bit wrong in that I did the blue before drybrushing the grey, so I had to go over the blue again, oh well its a simple colour to work with

The grey is supposed to make it look all dusty like apaches always seem to be. I've added some wash dribbles to make it look like pooling water has cleaned some of the dust off. I will be going over mechanical areas a bit later with a more oily wash.

Some simple weathering on the wings supposed to look like minor debris abrasion while scooting about the sky. If anyone has any other great ideas I'm happy to try them out

Its getting there.Maybe another couple of hours to get the main painting sorted and then as much detail fiddling as I can be bothered to do

Also the pilot needs a name and/or a callsign. I was thinking of "Boomer" as the Vulture version will most definately be making loud bangs, but answers on a postcard and you never know, perhaps your suggestion will get painted next to the cockpit

Anyway another quick update. Managed to grab an hour tonight to do some markings. I will need to re-weather over the top, but it should be ok with just a light drybrush of grey. I've also dirtied up the insignia a bit. Makes it a bit less shiny and new, but not over the top unmaintained.

I give you Banshee designation F03 HMR (Thanks Odd One Out ). I think this one might need to be flown by Flt Lt "Hammer" T'Ime. Some blast warning icons as well. I think I'll add some yellow or red explosive bolt markers around the cockpit as well.

As always, thanks for the kind comments.

The call for casting has been made before, but I'm not really set up to do that at this point. The most annoying bits have been the feet and hands that I would probably still have to do myself anyway to make sure they fit the base and weapons correctly. The visor, turbine vents and to armour are pretty simple.

@Odd One Out and Asherian - Oh well then, if you insist I've been pondering what to use as a base. I think the Dreadnought torso would be the best fit, but I think its too big for an infantry model. Currently playing around with the crisis suit shape in my head. I may have to steal some ides from the awesome crisis suits from the guy on the P&M forum who I can't remember the name of

I'm working on it! Really I am!

Up next is the Viking, and Mr Raynor has just been primed... The last one should be easy as he is in black armour, so no lengthy base coating needed, straight into the detailing and weathering

Anyway Viking PIPs:

Most of the block colour is now done, waiting for washing, which should be pretty quick, although there is quite a lot to get done

Also I've called time on the Banshee as being finished for now. I might go back and do some more weathering, but its definately tabletop-ready.

And the bits for the SCV have all now arrives, but my razor saw is dead, so there will be a short pause while I get new blades (and have a business trip to London for 3 days :()

Thanks guys.

Regarding the Storm Talon - I'm amused that I can basically use this as one. It did actually come out a bit big for a land speeder, but I think its the perfect size for the stormtalon. I'll just need to whomp up another nose assembly for the AC turret and it'll be done

So, after a week of horror and London, some progress for the Jubilee! (Thanks, Ma'am)

Some more work on the Viking paint job. Just the metalics to go then on to insignia and weathering.

And Good 'ol Jim is primered and ready for... well, insignia and weathering... Gotta love black paint jobs

Aaaaand, finally. Some work on my new Techmarine idea. A Terran SCV

So I've got some more done on the SCV and the Viking is pretty much completed!

SCV first:

Still a whole bunch of filling left to do on this guy, but its pretty much there. I need to get something to cover the shoulder joint somehow, but I'll work on that later

And the Viking:

Its currently pretty free of insignia, so I might go back and sort that out later, but the paint job is effectively done. Currently working on the base. Its going to be stomping thorugh some knackered composite panels on a concrete floor, hence the light grey drybrushing on the feet. I've also got some armourcast muzzle flashes for the assault cannon that are being finished up. Ink takes so long to dry

Heh, thanks

I think making it transform is a step too far for my planning skills, but I was tempted to do a flying one for use as a LS Typhoon. However I went and did the Banshee to cover that slot. Having said that, with the new Stormtalon fitting the Banshee perfectly, perhaps there is room after all

The drill is from the Killa Kan sprue, as are most of the random bits on the SCV

Thanks guys.

@Octavius... indeed, that is, in fact, the point

@Lonedirtydog - The SCV is a bit bigger than I had originally planned (a bit like the Banshee), but I think it gets the idea across ok The viking foot armour is actually the leg armour from one of the dreadnought kits tuned upside down and trimmed a bit. I think its the ironclad maybe? There are a few gaps in the Viking, but as its supposed to be able to transform I've left them in as movement joints.

A pic cross posted from the Viking Showcase thread because I like showing off

Also some progress on Good 'ol Jimmy R!

Quite pleased with the freehand snake motif. I used an Astronomican Grey undercoat for that one before highlighting in white.

Not going for a fully black scheme as I note in the source material that Raynor's suit has some patches of grey and metallic in places. The grey legs will also hopefully help tie him into the rest of the infantry. The original Raynor also doesn;t seem to display the Heaven's Angels insignia, but I needed something to fill the other pad

...

I kid, I kid. All are welcome here. Flinty even puts up with me, after all. On a serious note, it's absolutely fantastic to see the army slowly begin to reach its final stages. Your painting and attention to detail are spot on, Flinty! What's next on your agenda for these guys?

Post by: Flinty

Ooh. More interest! Stoking the fires of obsession once more!

@LordRogalDorn - Its nice to get paint on ther that I'm happy with. Its always a fear I have that I spend a lot of time making conversions and the cock it up with the paint

Jimmy probably smokes too, but not necessarily in his armour. As Odd One Out says though, Tychus is holding his end up.

Next on the painting table at the moment are the other 2 mooks for Tychus's squad. I need to get them done before my blue runs out/dries up. I'll probably need another blue at some point for the vehicles that will be slightly different to the infantry, but at least the squad will be consistent. The other 2 infantry squads will be coloured differently anyway as one is an allied Dominion marine squad with Warfield and the other are protoss zealots.

I also had a boring set of presentations yesterday that allowed me to play with insignia and numbers and slogans, etc. The rest of the infantry will be somewhat less restrained than the guys done so far

Pics tonight, perhaps.

Terran Deathwing WIP (WIP Vulture Bikes 21/07/13) @ 2012/06/12 21:49:17

Post by: Flinty

Pics tonight indeed!

Managed to get the other 2 mooks pretty much finished off. Some basing is left to do, but otherwise, done!

As noted above I spent some time thinking up slogans for the guys to have on their armour. They are after all mercenaries and not necessarily the most disciplined of troops, even for reneuralised psychos I've deliberately tried to swap about the shoulder pad markings to get a bit more individualisation in there. The other Marine squad will have similar, but more Dominion based iconography.

A cookie to whoever gets the reference

The other guy is a bit more politically savvy:

And now the finished mooks - The first one is having a bad day!

Just looking about a bit:

And some group shots of all the ground units painted thus far:

COVERING FIRE!

They still need their bases done and varnished, but otherwise done.

Next to get Swann up and running so I can call the whole squad done!

Thanks, guys. I've certainly learned a lot during the various builds

In an attempt to get the first squad fully finished I've broken out the GS to get Swann finished off. Filled the back of the neck area and build up the breastplate to the right level. I realised after I jammed the head in there that I forgot to get Swann's moustache in there... I should be able to get more GS in though, or it will be a painted 'tache

Got some basing on there as well, following the general theme of roadside transition from the rest of the squad. Next to get it washed down and primed up. Starting to run out of black primer though...

Today I have mostly been fiddling with hair. Pictures are zoomable.

Swann has been up-bearded:

While my medic has had her head chosen and un-shorn

Will wait for the hair to dry and then might give her a headband to control the hair. Swiffy hair in power armour would be annoying, I imagine

The back of the head has been left blank deliberately as the poor dear will be so embedded in her armour it will never be seen.

Thanks Tipios

Hair is surprisingly easy with a knife and some vaseline to hand, unless I just lucked out on the random skill acquisition side of things

The "guy" taking fire is heavily influenced by this piece I randomly found on the interwab... is my one a girl? who knows

Also, updateage is being severely affected by workiness that is requiring regular trips away just now. Interesting work, but tiring and leaves no room for my addictions Hopefully get some paint on Swann this weekend.

So goddamn much in this thread which is amazing! I loved SC (first version) when I was young and I particularly recognize those bases from the terran campaign streets. Also, that demolisher/shock cannon is very touching And I can't wait for the Odin to be made!

One question, though: Shouldn't the banshee have rotors? Or do they perhaps move to fast to be seen?

Terran Deathwing WIP (WIP Vulture Bikes 21/07/13) @ 2012/07/06 12:24:27

Post by: Flinty

@Saintspirit - In my happy world the rotors are moving too fast to be seen I prefer that look to the overlapping compressor fan style that seems to be put on most VTOLs just now. I thought about trying to fit some kind of perspex sheet in ther to make it a bit less empty, but I got bored before I found a final solution and got the thing painted.

Speaking of painting, maybe time this weekend, maybe not... Oh poor Swann :(

Terran Deathwing WIP (WIP Vulture Bikes 21/07/13) @ 2012/07/10 20:25:00

Post by: Flinty

Well Swann has now been primed, but no further. Lots of travel over the past couple of weeks :(

ON the other hand I've done quite a bit more GSing of feet and stuff that kind of trailed off last time I got stuck into these boys. Also the one obvious girl of the lot has had a bit more love... so to speak

I fixed the light, so it mostly works after a bit of jiggling, GSed up her legs and feet properly and finished off the headband holding back her hair.

Just need to get her and her (un)lucky patient undercoated and painted now

In retrospect I might actually have to tone the light source down a little...

Post by: Flinty

The base has 2 watch batteries enclosed. The LED is a 6V job I think, so I wouldn't get as good a result with just the one, if it could even drive the thing. I couldn't find lower voltage blue ones when I was looking.

I've got some el-cheapo LEDs from China that work pretty well with 1 3v, still bright tho.

Terran Deathwing WIP (WIP Vulture Bikes 21/07/13) @ 2012/07/13 14:33:12

Post by: Flinty

I thought all electronics these deays came from China as a default TO be honest the key thing for me wasn't the brightness but the colour. It had to be blue. I actually ended up with some ultra-small surface mount jobs as well, but I could barely see the LED, let alone solder connections onto it, so I had to compromise on the one I ended up with.

Swann update!

And he's done! Still got the base to do, but otherwise finished. The freehand could be more meaningful, but I think its neat enough. Swann is a funny mix of colours in the game as well, hence the rather eclectic paint job. Its a pity, but I couldn't find anywhere to put hazard striping that would make sense

With his deployables

And thats Terminator squad 1 done as well!

Now to get the Medic painted up and squad 2 started off!

Your work is of the cuff which is why it turns out looking so great and original

I really think your creative thinking is out of this world, and the paint scheme on your newest creation is great.

It has almost a comic art vibe to this army, which I love as it screams at you to look and admire it

Great stuff and imagination

I have to ask what head is that with the goggles I keep thinking it is from the AT-43 Range

Thanks

To be honest, for this army I just pretty much follow whats in the game, with a few minor tweaks Much easier to do stuff when someone else has already donw your thinking for you

Regarding the head, its a Scout head with the visor headband filed down a bit and GS eyepieces and facial hair added. It was a pretty simple conversion with the hardest bit being getting the eyepieces to be about the same size.

Neato - First 2 games down in 6th edition. Both 1500 points, the first was a win against Blood Angels and the second was a lose against Tyranids. I really rather like the new objective rules. It actually makes you go for objectives, rather than just trying to table your opponent that always seemed to be the default in 5th. I don't like the challenge rules. They are stupid and make no sense.

So the first game I managed to get the First Blood secondary objective and killed my opponent's general. In return Mr Raynor caught a force sword in the face and ID'd out, so a 2-1 win :(

In the second game it was all going swimmingly, except that my opponents hive tyrants were tenacious and irritating. One charged a full terminator squad in cover, and both sides wiped each other out, preventing me from taking any objectives. I managed to get my CC terminator squad into combat with a couple of zoanthropes, that quickly escalated into a combat with the other tyrant and 8 hive guard that also sucked in a second terminator squad. Enfeeble meant that I couldn't get FNP and was having difficulty against the really high T Guards and Tyrant. In the end only the Tyrant was left from that combat with a Tervigon on 1 wound in my deployment zone. I had a Dreadnought and a Land Speeder left, so I got first blood again, but lost out with my general dead and a Linebreaker unit in my deployment.

Good fun, and a much better result than my previous games with the Terranwing which were unmitigated failures

Maybe next time a slightly larger game to bring my Librarian into play! And now to try and get my Medic painted up and start on the Zealots properly.

Hmm... some actual progress...

First up is my award winning (ok, so its a picture of a dog with a bolter, but its still an award ) General Warfield! Purging his way thrgouh the Sara system.

Great fun to do and gratifying to win something for it.

Also a rather sleepless night last night as my brain decided that, yes, damnit, its time to do modelling again! So here we have some advancemenet on the Medevac/Stormraven. Actually, seeing how Dark Angels can't get stormravens and I wouldn;t be able to stick my Deathwing on it, even if it was allied, I might have to make it a stormeagle instead... But regardless, its a Medevac based transport aircraft The biggest difference between the two at this stage would be to not put the AC nose mount on and fit some big ass rocket launchers somewhere about its person. Final configuration will await the new DA codex.

Here is the SC2 original:

And here is what I've got so far. I'm actually starting to enjoy the build again as I can see what the next few steps will be.

Sooooo, comments, queries, complaints?

I'd like where you're going with that even if I couldn't see what you were basing it on

And hell yeah, who doesn't want a pic of a bolter armed pooch? Gratz!

Plastic, the treat that keeps on taking control of my head and requiring that I sit, beg and occasionally dance for attention

I got a bit more work done on the dropship, but no pics yet because I'm ill and sleepy. More tomorrow!

Queue wacky fiddle music and chinese-language swearing!

And the Serenity Class shuttle was born

Anyway, then I finished fitting the wings.

This particular model has been documented with an in-air refuelling interface. This prevents it from conducting orbital operations, but greatly assists in duration for atmospheric and sub-orbital operations. Note that the TL multi-meltas are kept away from the spike

The mount under the cockpit will be the Machine Spirit interface and if it gets used as a Stormraven will also be the AC mount.

Hah, you need to magnetise the wings and weapons now so that you can field both versions

Do you now intend to make a Serenity Stormraven too?
(I could also see an Orky Dakkajet version based on the Reaver-ised Serenity.)

Which kits did you kitbash to get your 'serenity' ? I really want to make my own so your thoughts and what you did/would do differently would be awesome.

I cant believe how many kits you butcher and some how come out with something looking original and cool, I end up with a table of crap and disappointment

Great conversion cant wait to see the final version

Thanks guys

@Monkeytroll - I'll be leaving the wings loose anyway. no need to magnetise, thankfully as I'm running out

@Ovion - Probably not to be honest... Does anyone ever field more than one stormraven? I wonder if you could do the same to a Thunderhawk though... hmmmmm I like the Dakkajet idea as well. You'd need to get the AA mount fitted just right

@Epherous - It's "just" the Stormraven and Valkyrie kits... you know, the two most expensive ones Oh, except for the AC mount. That is a Rhino cupola with a Defiler head as the sensor array. I had one lying about

Also some plasticard and GS to fill gaps. To be honest its all flowed together rather nicely to this point. If I were to do it again, I would try to fix the cockpit on a bit more cleanly. I ended up taking a little bit too much away and I'll need to fill the gaps somehow. The engine mounts are also a little bodged, so I'll need to disguise them somehow. If you didn't want them movable then you could probably glue them into place with a neater detail.

@lone dirty dog - Its all about pattern recognition, I guess. Also I only copy other people's ideas and translate them into GW kits If I tried to come up with something original I'm sure I would fare badly...

Next up is to work out how to do the Stormeagle Vengeance launchers on the top fuselage. I'll probably just end up using Whirlwind launchers as the weapons have the same stats. Also some TLLC action, but I have a couple of Predator TLLC weapon mounts ready to go.

Do you know if there are any cheap magnets about the same size as the Stormraven engines that you could fit into the recess instead of the bar inside the model GW did with the Stormraven? Just a random thought.

@Epherous - I can't quite visualise what you're trying to describe, but I'm sure you can find a magnet to fit. I use Neotexx for mine, but I believe K&J Magnetics is the peferred vendor for you colonial types

@Lone Cat - Thats the chassis for my Guard Hydra. I needed to add a heavy bolter to match the weapon loadout. I've got 2 that are pretty much identical, but only 1 is painted. More pics linked from my Dunedin .sig link.

Finished the Medevac! It can either be run as a Stormraven, or a Stormeagle, depending on what the next DA Codex says

The thing seven dissassembles easily for transport... yaaay for magnets

I just need to pick up a second hand flyer base now... Not sure what happened to my one :(

WOW that is one mad looking machine indeed, the overall look is great but the tail looks a little funny, not sure if it is just the angle of the photo though.

But the rest is spot on the thrusters are great, I gather they move to allow vertical take off, and the missile armoury is ass kicking, although if you made it look like they raise up out of the main body that would have been cool.

But that would have been way to much hard work, I could have not got this far if I was building it, hell I would not have even got the design

Great job what is the intended colour scheme

Post by: Flinty

Thanks LDD. The transition on the tail is a little abrupt, but I can't bothered to do a fancy GS smoothing. The booms are also a bit close, but I am following the original design, so I have a get out of jail free card The missile launchers will be magnetized, but I'm not up for articulating the things as well

Colour scheme will be the standard Raynor's Raiders blue and grey like the previous painted models.

Cross posted from P&M board:

So having briefly surfaced from new-dad-dom I noticed that the Dark Angels update had landed. I'm still awaiting the Codex, but I noticed the new Land speeder variant and thought I could play.

I already had the following done as a Diamondback for my Starcraft inspired Terranwing and it kinda shared the aesthetic with the external suspensor/propulsion pods:

So I ran with it and whomped up a new plasma turret using Stormraven bits:

I'm not sure what the size of the new Speeder variant is, but it can't be that much bigger (surely). If its any good I might even do a second Diamondback to run as a normal AC/MM speeder.

Amusingly, I'm pretty sure that my Banshee can easily be modified to be one of the new DAngle flyers (especially with the TLLC mounts:

I just took some glances at every page, and you did a very good job man Kinda wonder who would win though. A Terran Space Marine or an Imperium Space marine

Thanks guys. The project is on a bit of a hiatus while I deal with new child syndrome

Who would win... an Imperial Marine is the equivalent of 100 lesser troops and can single handedly overcome huge adversity to achieve impossible goals. Terran marines have an average life span of 9 seconds in combat... good job it only takes 25s to train them

They do have armor piercing spikes tho, it says their gun is made to pierce their power armor.

Then you have other description of stuff, such as the C10 rifle that can destroy a siege tank from the inside.

Hmm... looks a bit dusty in here... its amazing how little time you end up with when you have a baby

Anyway, finally started sneaking a bit more time to paint and decided to work on my Vulture bikes. The idea is that the riders are a bit more individualistic than some of the other troops, hence the difference in bike markings, helmets and clothes. The bases are the ruined urban set from Atenocites. Really nice pieces and they tie into the road/transition basing of the rest of the force. I was going to try and do some of my own ruined road bike bases, but then I saw these and decided that I would cheat

The posing will be finalised when the painting is sorted out

The central bit is an IG tank track guard while the rest is just plasticard trimmed to fit and with some triangulated bits to get around corners. I modified the "door" bits of the hull to simplify the shape a bit.
