@Regnak: Ta bud, pleasure to be of service! Now i need some of your eye candy to drool over!
Actually you posting has reminded me that there will be some more content upcoming for this blog, since uni in september and revision over xmas ive had no time! But, i recently put some paint to the V.I.N.D.I.C.A.R.E, so pics forthcoming.
Also, the games club at uni is about to start a necro campaign on the 21st so Explorator Maniple 111010 will be explorating some more
Keep an eye out for them in my upcoming skirmish games thread which will include infinity and malifaux as well (Plan is to just post the finished models in here, everything to do with the necro will go in that thread)

Stay tuned!
Will get some stuff up soon. Working on a FW Space Wolves Dreadnought atm.
I might post some Malifaux bits also. Been painting alot of those as me and the lady started up the game a few months back.
Well Dakka, heres a quick phone snap of what im working on atm, should be finished tomorrow all being well (bar weathering powders).
On another note, as of 3hrs ago im now 20! Woot, and all that. Does not feel good to be entering "proper adulthood", its a good job i aint gonna stop being immature...
Thanks for looking,
Vitruvian
edit: Also just became a DCM, great way to celebrate my bday! Nice to be able to contribute to Dakka.....
@solstice: Lol no, its just the leg and carapace top, didnt see the point in adding the rest of the parts in a pile!
@dstein: Danke Yeah i need some more though, I want a thunderbolt, a vulture, and my elysians could do with some more rides Oh and the Caestus is too cool, then theres the marauder destroyer *salivates* and we may as well throw in a thunderhawk at some point....
Righty ho, done the vindicare! Very happy with how this turned out considering that was a 3 month hiatus from painting
The base floor colour aint purple, silly 5am lighting
Thanks for looking, stay tuned for a Necromunda themed update/link,
I was meant to post on here before i updated my blog, but i wanted to say you keep giving me bursts of inspiration for my ad mech, great stuff, loving the assassin as well, really gritty, *thumbs up* Might have to copy you and put up links on my blog with all my inspiration links, including yours, oc the Hoffs, and the damn artificiers.
Dude, Cool Warlord. I love the terrain on Page 9. Wicked paint job.
Would yo mind too much posting a set of dimensions for the warlord. I like the proportions of yours and am putting together a list of sizes and features I want to put on the one I want to build. Your information would be cool to add because it is different than most I have and Looks stockier and beefier to me. I like it a lot....
Automatically Appended Next Post: Subbed for sure dude.....
I hope some day to have as many titans! My infantry needs some support
Too bad I promised myself that I wouldn't get into another big model until every little box I have is built and all of my models are basecoated at a minimum!
@solstice: Sure. The base model is a whfbvc crypt ghoul, with all the bones/spines/scars clipped and filed off. I left the odd bit of hair, especially round the nether-regions, to be painted as scraps of cloth. The heads are simply the crypt ghoul heads covered in gs and smoothed into a faceless mask. Then add whatever mechanical gubbins you like, smoothing the transition between machine and flesh with some fibrous/scar tissue made by a small bit of gs poked into a few times.
@logg_frogg: No worries. Im in the exact opposite boat, desperately need more infantry, yet just bought 4 more vehicles I need to do something like that resolution, but theres no way in hell id stick to it
However, all my modelling is going towards the Dakka Paint Comp. When the results are out i'll post it here along with a lot of Elysian swag i landed recently.
Farewell!
@solstice: yeah, simples best, means less time per model!
Good to see your still with us vit, i know what you mean, uni stuff is taking all my time atm as well, looking forwards to your unveiling for the daka comp. =]
Alright, it must be a Brit thing... what is this 'uni' that seems to be the bane of everyone's free time? Is it an acronymn I'm missing or something else?
Its a terrible terrible thing chemical cutthroat, they force you into flats with alot of people you don't know and insist on excessive binge drinking. Then, when you come to, dressed in a traffic cone and a pirate costume they ask you to go to sit in a large stuffy room with a boring man in tweed who talks at you, i think its a challenge, the last person to fall asleep wins something...I'm not sure what, i've never won a round yet.
Haha at least youve been educated, im trying to atm. Sleep claims me far too often as well
But yeah, uni is university, so college to you yanks. It aint that bad timewise, but hard to find modelling motivation when drink/clubs/friends/Too many other destractions are literally a few metres away!
On another note, my paint comp entry is shaping up nicely, the scenic base will be finished today, leaving me tomorrow to build the other duellist and 7 days after that to paint the whole thing.
Yeah, for me my distraction is just work. And ME3... damnit I was so much more productive when I didn't have a solid internet connection for gaming.
You're stuff looks good btw Vit! I wandered over to check it out while waiting for more Yu-Jing updates, but like the rest of us you have your fingers in many pies... or however that saying goes.
Haha cheers, im so glad i cant be bothered to buy a wireless router for our flat xbox, skyrim eats enough of my time as it is.
Hopefully with my new airbrush and compressor i should start to get back on the infinity. As always however, it entirely depends whether the mood grabs me.
I think its dont count your pies until theyve been incubated. Maybe.
Nah mate theres no way its a chore, at least in first year. All im doing is getting drunk atm! The next three years however will probably kill me.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Figured id show these, tanks from secret weapon miniatures. Didnt fancy the turret though, so will prob jig up a hydra or hellhound arrangement.
Feels good to be doing 40k again!
edit: Oh, and they need some chunky rivets as well, cos it just aint 40k without em
Right, now the deadline for the Paint Comp has finished i can show my entry. Unfortunately i only came 6th, but i believe most of that was to do with my poor photography and composition, oh well Live and learn!
Ah crap!! That was the one you were talking about?! Out of all of them, that one stood out to me. The rust-texturing is fantastic on the diorama base... so nasty that I don't even want to touch it to turn it! Good good stuff.
That first photo, however, doesn't do it justice. I realize you wanted to highlight the details- the book, the individuals, the guy with the NMM-like laser halberd... I think your spoiler'd pic would have been the best for that- It must have been difficult (read- nigh-on impossible) to capture all the elements working with a single angle...
Kudos, man! Not cuz I know you, but that one impressed me on scale and attempt. The grot-entry was particularly clean, as was the "high ground" (I have my money this one probably took the win home?) but yea, scale wise and quality, this one all the way.
Aw Vit its a massive shame you didn't win, i voted for you, i think your right though, a first glance at the picture really doesn't do it justice at all, i loved all the little details like the book, for me it stood out as being by far the most grimdark and atmospheric of the entries.
(plus its mechanicus, not that i'm biased at all. =p )
edit: Is that watch cogs i see on the dark mech's legs as well? such versatile things those cogs are, love them =]

Cheers buddy, yeah taking pics was one thing that did not cross my mind when i built it. Such a pita to photo.
Im very surprised i started priming 3 days before the deadline and the whole thing on the day of the deadline As i said before i now cannot use slow painting as an excuse for non painted armies
Although it did take 25 out of the 72 hours, in between going to uni, suffice to say i didnt sleep much that week......
PDH wrote:Wow that was out of the blue....did I miss the wip shots some place? I'd have commented much sooner had I see it. Wicked.
I love the tech heretech! His face and legs are so good. Is it based off the carin wraith?
The tech priest is cool, like how I had to look twice to work out the base model. Very nice indeed.
You're good at this mechanicus stuff
Yeah paint comp rules say no pics anywhere until after the voting has finished, hence the secrecy...
It is a cairn wraith aye, so technically an example of "pimp my plastic single box whfb character" Im guessing you figured out it was solomon lok, blended with the fw tech priest, if not there you are.
Ive certainly got my practice on the AdMech, and more importantly the inspiration/ motivation...

I know, photo lessons on the cards Next paint comp eh...
Im sure it had nothing to do with your being a fellow brother of the hallowed mechanicus at all.....
And yeah i had a lot of fun sorting through the little bag for the right cogs!
Stay tuned for elysian goodness, and a batrep of my nids vs. SONS of ORAR's sons of orar (whoda thunk it!?)
Yep spotted Sol and then the tech priest. Still I had to look twice which is always fun. Very nice example of "pimp my plastic single box whfb character" heres to an interesting empire release soon! I think I missed the whole of the painting comp...linky?
When I was at the ammo bunker bash I got to see Cerebralerebus's admech up close....so inspiring but so expensive...
And yeah, i follow erebus on warseer, so jealous you got to see em up front! Love his work. I actually put it in my inspiration list right back in the op!
Next is elysians for a bit, until Hits_the_Spot releases his true scale marines. Then it'll be either RG or sons of medusa, leaning towards the sons cos it lets me keep the admech vibe goin.
At some point over my month long easter break in april i need to finish strippin the warhound and repaint it.
Thats all in between revising for my final first year exams :/

Ooooh snaap! Yea, definitely go SoMs. GreyDeath's are simply amazing... not that that's the benchmark I'm comparing yours to, but that's the benchmark I'm comparing yours to.
Ah... month-long Easter Break... sorry, bro. I feel no pity for you and your exam review... been on the same road for nearly 2 years now... it sucks arse, and I remember you saying something elsewhere about you "getting drunk every single day" at uni... lol... sounds really rough...

P.S. - just saw your 'nids... and your VCs... and TKs... any chance you still have any components? Hit me up via PM.
And because cerebralerebus asked for it, heres some more close ups of the dark mech priest, last lot of pics from the contest i promise! It really brings home how much i need a new camera and a lightbox, theres only so much work photoshop can do :(
- plasticard frame, capped on the end with hormagaunt claws.
- plasticard tubing for the pistons
- watch cogs on the knee joints
- a load of gs tentacle things to "fuse" it all together.
The only thing from a "kit" is the wraith body, the claws, the chaos backpack ends and the mechadendrites.
Well that would be conducive to increasing my output! It really entirely depends on whether my laptop and xbox are stuck in here with me
I cant wait to get back to my parents' next week, can finally finish stripping the warhound, and im actually motivated to blaze it in a couple of days!

Here's a shot of the Club's Warhound, which i painted. Its had a few knocks and been re-glued until it no longer stands. That coupled with the fact that i painted this a while ago means i want to repose and paint it.
Vitruvian
From a while back, half is now stripping the other half has been stripped and is in bits.
Its the clubs but ive been sitting on it for about a year, really need to rebuild and paint it.
Unfortunately the 6 months in dettol made the torso and weapons kinda soft. the majority of the detail will not be affected but some of it will need to be GS'ed/ replaced. Ah well, you live and learn. Also, im gonna need to do some clever basing, this thing is very very wonky and oddly posed as is
In other news, we have a varsity 40k tournament on the 2nd of may (ie our uni against the metropolitan version, ours is the better ). I will be taken along my elysians hopefully, so need to get on them as well.

YEEK... So... the details... (especially if I plan some sort of suicidal strategy like leaving it in for half a year...) you mean... they've melted? And how about the larger components - legs/arm joints, have they been effected?
And good luck at your tourney! Any chance of a shot of the Elysian army you're taking over? Or are you bringing the whole kit and caboodle to swap units in/out?
Its just the thin bits of resin, theyve gone really soft like rubber. You can push them and they go back as they were. Thankfully everything else is still rock solid, though the outer skin feels like velvet.
It should be solveable, if not i'll just paint anyway!
The legs, which soaked for a couple of days, suffered no mishaps whatsoever. I suspect even after a month it would be fine, 6 no.
Not sure what im taking yet, the tourney pack gets emailed soon. I have to paint it before i can show you a shot Remi
WAIT a moment, I'd strongly advise you to leave the parts out in the sun or another warm, but not hot place. I had the same thing with resin kits and certain stripping liquids. The resin regained structural integrity as the solvents evaporated.
It's at least worth giving it a try. Wait a week or something.
I voted for you dude! Your contest entry was just cooler than the other ones. With some better photos it would have kicked ass, the one that won was seriously boring. You should look into making a cheap-ass DIY light tent. And no, this has nothing to do with me being biased towards Admech...
Thats a good idea Baiyuan, will do so with the worst affected bits.
Cheers meade, i know the photos sucked. I will def look into light tents. It was more the bloody awkward shape of the entry that made photography bad. That and awful photo selection and montage creation! Thanks for voting regardless
Yeah, in hindsight you may have done better by modelling the figures closer together to fit in one shot, and nothing in front of them to obstruct the shot. Got to keep the whole final product in mind. It's all good though, cheers
Righty ho guys, i managed to get the Warhound rebuilt!
Big ups to Baiyuan, his advice to leave the parts in the sun hardened them nicely, making everything much easier to work with! So Baiyuan!
It was pretty fun to rebuild, and will be based on that battlescape. There was some fiddly replacement of some warped hydraulics, but otherwise its cool.
Heres where she stands ready to be prime, everything left off will be painted separately. See, i do learn from my mistakes!!
Its funny how slowed a warhound looks without armour or weapons!!

Ooooh... very nice! Looking forward to more pics... I hope to get one of these in the future... the far future...
Sweet Jesus!! That looks awesome! Where'd you get the base from? Regardless, it looks fantastic walking through that.. *daydreams about pod-based battletech game from the 90s...*
Can't wait to see the finished product!

In other news, almost got your guy together. Looking into the proper method to get your guy to you in one piece... very soon!
@solstice: Yeah unfortunately that aint gonna happen :( I ordered some paints 1st class from wayland on sunday night and they havent been dispatched yet :(
@Regnak: Cheers buddy, one can dream, eh!
@Remi: The base is actually the GW Battlescape, the craters are a great distance apart for the footfall of a warhound
Speaking of which, got the metals done (including on the weapons and stuff not pictured). Pretty much just the armour to ab and shes done (bar crew, script/liturgy/icons and osl):
Thats cool mate, i finished this in a couple of hours when i was bored:
@Baiyuan: Yeah it all came up good! I did have to replace some pistons, but that was because i had to break them to reposition it.
@Norn King: Thankyou!
Ive just finished sculpting a model for HF Izanagi, entirely from scratch (bar the left arm and face). Will snap some pics later. Ive decided i do not like sculpting hands.
Even better with color!! I was going for a VC-type scheme, primarily black w/ purple/blue secondary and/or tertiary... but that green and orange/red looks pretty damn good! And now, like a d-bag customer, you wouldn't be able to put dead yellow grass and snow on that base, would you...? Y'know, fit it with the rest of my army...?
I can't wait to see the other! I'd say the samurai is a big success! Also, tips on how you did the head ornament! It looks fantastic! I could take a lesson from you on making those!
@Remi: Haha, i kinda figured id leave the basing to you, so you can match it. Besides i cant do snow basing for toffee. I can repaint the skelly if you want me to.
As for the other, here she is. (I may or may not paint her, depends whether inspiration hits me before i send the stuff to you) Lemme say this now, hands are not fun to sculpt! I have to say thanks to you for starting your project though. These two have been a super fun revision diversion, and i really feel like my sculptings improved after this.
As for the head ornament, i pretty much took a triangle of plasticard and randomly cut it! Tutorial done
Also, you say you could take lessons from me. There's a big difference between having a laugh making one samurai skelly, and making an entire army. I dont envy you!

... fine. I'll end up basing him... *grumble, grumble*
I have to agree- this was a pretty rigorous exercise in sculpting. Excellent work though... I'm enjoying the female vampire/ghost as well! If she doesn't get painted, I might end up casting her as a banshee or a lead in a spirit-host base. There's a story of Okiku, a plate-breaking servant girl turned haunting spirit...http://www.artelino.com/articles/ghost_story_okiku.asp... I totally think she could fit that role... I really like the obi (belt) and flow around the legs!
And no... I don't envy the task either. It's very fun, going through maybe 1 or 2... but after making pads and fixing other conversion areas on the knights... egads, man. Ah well... I've got a year to go, so progress here and there, and I'll eventually end up with something resembling an army! Thanks again, and looking forward to making the exchange!

Nice work sir, looking forward to seeing some paint on her.. these guys would look right at home next to Malifaux's Kirai.
Oh and thanks for the PM saying you'll give me the titan for free for being so great... I'm honoured!

In that case, i shall leave her unpainted. Thanks for the compliments!
geordie09 wrote:Great thread Vitruvian, how did you make the Warlord Melta, it looks cool and I've often wondered how to go about scratching one?
Umm, its just some pvc tubes, with the bottom of a u-bend (the bit that catches the gunk) for the cartridge. Then i built up a blocky case. The frame around the barrels was just careful cutting of some cardboard, replicated 4 times, then with the gaps filled.

The fan actually covers all of her face bar the eyes when shes looked at straight on. As above, i made these for HF Izanagi, partly cos i got inspired by his project, partly because he's graciously sending me a beautiful piece of work. Its unlikely i'll paint her.
Oh yeah, itll ship tomorrow, you gonna paypal me that £1000 yeah? Sooner rather than later please....
Althought im cool with that, as long as you know you get the titan after the 1000th week.

And did you have to mention horses?! ...... I've got 15 Death Riders to get through!
@Regnak: Haha, subtle influences.... You'd best get to work then..
@Baiyuan: Cheers buddy, it was good fun, and good practice. I copied an image for the kimono, but it was only from one perspective, so one side of it looks alright! Still happy with it though.
Over the weekend i read IA 9 and 10 finally. Now im bloody inspired by marines again, curse my fickle nature!
So im gonna switch to marines for a bit. First up while i figure out whether to commission a few marines to copy or go it alone, is the Iron Thane of the Atropos War Clan of the Sons of Medusa. He's described in IA10 thusly:
Imperial Armour 10 - The Badab War - Part Two wrote:Iron Thane Valund Cal is the master of the Atropos War Clan of the Sons of Medusa contingent that took part in the Badab War. Clad in his hulking black metal and emerald armour, it is almost impossible to tell where the man ends and the machine begins. Vaylund Cal's almost entirely augmetic body is a testament to {C his lifetime's work as a servant of the Machine God. What little remains of his organic tissue is shot through with bionic and auto-sanguinary systems that increase his strength and endurance beyond even the superhuman levels of a Space Marine.
So i figured id make him huge even when compared to a truescale marine. Here's a wip of his legs. This is just the bionics atm, armour will go over most of the front. As you can see from the sm techmarine next to him, he's bloody huge!
LOL... Hawt dayum!! That dude is... whatever comes in-between terminator and dreadnought... I like how you're building him from the ground-up. The underwires and stuff followed by the armor... I'm excited for this project! - We've spoken about this before, and I'm interested in your take on the SoMs, made famous by GreyDeath.
Aha! I got it! The legs are proportionally out of scale to the torso and head, I think, Im pretty sure the torso needs lengthening, and the head needs a bit biggerizing, at least thats what I think is wrong
One thing to bear in mind, is that this guy is a lot larger than a normal ts marine. Its a sc described as having an entirely augmetic frame, so normal human proportions dont really work. ie. Hes not a giant astartes, he has just had everything replaced with bionics. Thats why i chose a normal head.
Thanks for your input btw, i do appreciate any and all comments.
I want to avoid making him look termie-esque though.
Yeah i figured one bad boy wasnt enough.
So ive been having a think, and with a dakka uk tourney coming up on june 10th i figure i may as well try and get these sons of medusa done by then. Nothing like a deadline to motivate you.
Assuming it gets ok'ed by the TO, im gunna run a list from IA 10. With 3 dreads, 2 contemptors, an LR, Vaylund Cal and 10 marines.
Which obviously means i need 3 dreads and 10 marines. I plan to do the dreads asap, but im gonna scratch build them.
So heres the start of one of the 10 marines. This guy is ts, so it shows you how big Vaylund Cal is.
The eventual plan is to sculpt one suit of each of the marks of armour, then cast them up. Then i can have loads! I wanna do a TS Executioners army too.
However, for this tourney, i shall just sculpt 10 marines.
Great start, especially on the sculpted legs I would however redesign the bionic legs, they look very crude, almost orkish but that's just my taste I'd use some ball joints instead for the hips and ankles to make it look more articulated and then some pistons.
the head is easy Vit.
Termie helmet, cut the front diagonally to the shin from both ends and you have something that looks like those mk-whatever knight-heads (well tbh makes it look like.. bigger GK heads)
You could still use the old legs but they could use some armor plating, maybe the square segmented kind, to make them bulkier. That way you could cover up any flaws. I think that techmarines would probably have even thicker armored legs than a ts marine.
thought of using the bic lighter wheel-thingie as joints? i mean i'm bursting with ideas.
the original legs would look awesome with front facing rectangular 3/4ths of the leg plates, easily made with bent plasticard and outlined with thin 2-3mm broad strips o' evergreen
also if you want the piston look, just add a strip of plasticard to the bottom of each tube, or fit a larger tube outside the smaller tube.
Capitansolstice wrote:Hmm, will there be multiple ball and socket joints?
Hip and ankle should be aye, probably do cog knees again.

I can achieve the lighter thing with all the watch parts, cheaper too Plan is to add 4 pistons to both of the shins, then jazz the thighs up too. WIll probably do cogs as knees, covered by armour.
Thanks for the c&c guys, It motivates me a lot and youre comments are really helping to shape this, so keep it up!
Tomorrow is friday (well, today technically. Ugggh, i should really go to bed), so that means a full day of uni. Hopefully the evening will be not too drinking heavy/busy as i really feel a night of revision and sculpting/modelling.
Drinking is very bad, and you most definitely should not drink, especially if you're underage. I however, am at uni, and 20. therefore i feel like if i dont destroy my liver now i'll never get another chance!
I similarly cant wait for my contemptor duo! I got 2 normal bodies, 2 of the cool asscans, 2 claws and one of the MLs. So i can run a 'furioso' for want of a better word and a mortis, or 2 normal claw and asscan contemptors
Vitruvian XVII wrote:Drinking is very bad, and you most definitely should not drink, especially if you're underage. I however, am at uni, and 20. therefore i feel like if i dont destroy my liver now i'll never get another chance!
Drinking and posting on dakka? Not my style. Usually I just email my ex-wife when have been drinking.
Interesting. I was quite fond of the old ones. I just figured you'd be doing a lot of sculpting over the wires and such (armor plating) to make it more-grimdark imperium rather than orkish. I can see that too, not to say that's not cool.
Keep it up and looking forward to more! (Especially when the painting starts!)
Looking good. I might be in the minority but I did like the look of the old legs, I think its one of those things that needs to be finished for it to all "Click"...
.. I do however like the new legs and am interested to see where it goes from here...
I agree with Regnak on the point about finishing one before it clicks, you really need to, since it is ultimately all about the sum of the parts, not them individually.
Looking good, I'd consider also thickening out the waist a little, though that could be done with pouches etc. Can you position a couple of pads on the shoulder just so we can see the breadth there? Generally awesome, mind.
Yeah that leg armor is coming out great, it's the perfect style. I would also consider doing something cool with the helmet, like add a special grille and bionic eyes or something, since its the focal point.
@graven: Cheers! Noted and done. Will get shoulder pads soon, waiting on some custom sons of medusa ones from a warseer user.
@meade: Thanks, glad you like! Noted and done
So this is the final stretch. I appreciate you're all probably a little bored of this by now, so this'll be the last update before the final assembled pic.
I added waist/hip armour, just need to bulk up the pelvis. Also gave him a bionic eye and techy grill, as suggested by meade. Hammer is very nearly done, needs lots of wires and then its just cleaning up the left bionic arm and glueing the servo arms! Hope you like.
edit: note the hammer head is not glued, thats why it looks wonky.
Yeah I'm totally going to copy that and do some true scale iron hands or something. I got my watch parts and everything cant wait to see him with servo arms... and don't forget mechadendrites... he is a son of medusa after all. Probably an ugly fellow too.
everything's perfect except you might want to bulk up those thighs... not sure if you're done with that yet though. The feet look so cool and well done it would be a shame not to continue that work up the leg.
Damn fine work good Sir... only little thing, in last pic the hammer head looks a bit wonky.. other than that impressive stuff! For the legs maybe you could add some of those Terminator shield bits that they normally have around the hip/thigh area, that should bulk them up a bit... or maybe instead a large honour scroll hanging down the middle like a loincloth?
Is the going to have shoulder pads? if so any ideas on them?
Black Vallejo Primer ftw! And yes, the Avengers is fantastic. I've heard the white may not cover very well, YMMV.
Back on-topic however, that True-Scale marine is looking pretty nifty, almost steampunk-y. Looking forward to seeing how you use your incoming Brown Stuff to good effect.
Particularly fond of the hammer head, it has to be said. And the piston legs are excellent. I may have to steal that idea for terrain.

Thanks! Yeah the cogs give a bit of a steampunk vibe, fine by me though! Steal away, any idea in this blog is free to pilfer
dsteingass wrote:No Way! The white is all I use for figs anymore!
This is one coat! (And Iron Man was Red plastic) It's the best, finest primer I've ever used!
Guys, guys, guys, here are my thoughts on the matter
I hate white primer, way too much touch up in the shadows for me, black is less forgiving. That said, i now find black to harsh.
The best way ive ever found to prime has to be from our own resident genius majortom11. The results, especially when you use glazes over the top, are amazing, and really work.
Here's what he does:
Spoiler:
MajorTom11 wrote:So a friend was asking me about priming them, and I figured I would share the answer here, as it is interesting (to me anyways lol) -
Question - my models will be black and red, I primed gray, do you know of a good way to get a decent looking black quickly?
Answer - Personally I find the 2 hardest colors to paint are white and black, and with both, I will prime accordingly. White is a bitch as you usually need to paint on 3 very thin coats if you have any hope of getting a smooth consistent finish. Black likewise usually takes 2 coats to guarantee strong coverage over white or grey, but usually you don't have to worry about being as thin with the layers. Most blacks dry glossy though, which presents it's own issues when you are trying to judge a blend. When you are trying to paint your grey or blue highlights it is super easy to go too bright and boom, you have very very obvious paintstrokes and you lose any kind of convincing effect. Even if you get it right, it is still very hard to judge the blend as the black is shiny and your grey highlight usually isn't, making the reflections confusing.
If you are worried about spraying them again, twice, then you can just prime black and do a 4:6 Shadow grey to black edge highlight... may take a while, but it is a way to do something reasonably good looking without risking the frustration of trying a blend.
For the red, it doesn't really matter. Generally speaking, even with Mechrite, you have to put on multiple coats to get a smooth red (by brush anyways, AB or spraycan works well).
White, Yellow, Red, Orange... these guys all require multiple thin layers. Don't worry too much about the base color for red, but go white for yellow, orange or white.
I almost always go black, the fact that it creates natural shade and is very forgiving if you miss a spot vs white, makes it the winner for me.
If I go white, I prime black first, but then I pulse the white over top. Why? because the spray doesn't get into the recesses very easily, and I get the best of both worlds... when it is done, it is like having a Zenital white pre-washed with black.
Now, you may be looking and saying, bid deal it is just white and it is just shadowed (not paint effect shadows, but real ones). Except look at the light on my fingers. Lit completely differently than the model, once you absorb that and look back at the models, you can see just how effective this is as a way of shading and achieving fantastic results before you even touch it with a brush.
Automatically Appended Next Post: For the record, heres what a series of glazes look like over the top of that zenithal prime method:
Very impressive! The vast majority of my army is black (God of Shadows kind of does that to an army), so it was a no-brainer for me. I have heard of people using this method with spray cans as well, so you don't necessarily need an airbrush either. I may use this when I eventually get around to my Wood Dark Eldar. Thanks for the tips, Vitruvian.
I tried zenithal priming but I just found it redundant most of the time, as anything you can do with priming is probably better done with actual spraypaint pigments. It puts two coats of primer on the model, why do I need that? It also tends to make a 'dappled' effect I'm not fond of. I think I am on the side of the fence now that less primer is better, and I try to use the 'dusting' method, with grey primer, then if I want a zenithal effect I do the same thing with airbrush paints. That accomplishes the same effect but with more smoothness and control.
@Meade: You make good points. I would use the zenithal priming to aid painting the normal grunts. If i was gonna airbrush the main colours i would just do the zenithal colour off the bat.
Ok, ive finally finished Iron Thane Vaylund Cal. Theres probably some gaps to fill and things to tidy but i'll find them when it comes to paint. I may go back and add mechadendrites when i get a hold of the cable maker mould thing, but for now i reckon hes done. On to the contemptors!
I've seen it suggested in some places. Pretty much all you need is some ridged plastic, they come in different widths, or some such to roll the greenstuff between, and that makes the ridged tube shape. I got a tube tool myself but it's a bit expensive, although nice for being durable. But the larger sheets of styrene allow you to roll a larger tube of greenstuff, even though that's rarely needed. Plus it's just nice cheap material you can probably use for scratchbuilding anyway. Might try it myself soon when I put in an order for more scratchbuilding supplies...
Yeah that's pretty cool idea to combine a hollow plasticard tube with the actual mechadendrite tube. Combining the virtues of rivets + tubes. Doing the whole thing is a bit time-consuming for my taste though.
@Meade: Thanks! The servo arms gave him the bulk i was hoping they would. I was gonna get the masq minis tool, the plasticard looks like it may stick, which is not ideal Might just wind up getting some flexible cables from zinge though.
@Jake: According to the 'Filter Thread' option, you havent posted before, so welcome! Thankyou! That link is cool but i wanna stray away from guitar wires.
Vit, don't know why I haven't posted here before, I'v elurked for quite some time!
With mechandrites, you don't have to use guitar wire, if you can find some fairly thick guage copper wire, and add the other things, I think it would look just as good!
Can't wai tto see what you do with the Contemptors! I think those are great models!
Oh, and I never even knew there was a "filter thread" tool! That will make searching for certain posts much easier in the future! Thanks!
LOL... first thought getting on this page... "No friggin' way!! IRON MAN!!"
Next thought with a few scrolls... "Damn, like a grimdark Doctor Octopus!" I like the look of your TS monstrosity. However, (perhaps you have it in your head and I just can't see it at the moment without more prompts) I'm wondering if the Thane is going to look "right" with his SM brothers, seeing as how he is near 90% robotic, and his body bears little to no resemblance to the SMs he leads. Just a thought, but I do like the scratch-construction.
And now... a contemptor. I can't wait to see if you can totally rip... er, mimic GD's SoM technique on this and the rest of the army. LOL, whatever. We've spoken about this. I would shamelessly steal the formula and technique as well, so no insult to you. You'd probably just do it better than me.
Well i have just watched all iron man and iron man 2 again before i went to watch avengers (as well as hulk, cap usa and thor) so maybe it subconsciously got channelled in!
How do you know he'll bear no resemblance to the SM he leads? They aint Iron Hand successors for nothin!
Yeah ima shamelessly rip off Grey_Death, but im sure he wouldnt mind! Probably be a slightly different feel though, as i cant use spray primers due to being in uni halls, so the army painter spray he used isnt viable. Also i imagine i'll use the ab a lot more than he did.
I was planning on leaving them, partly because it makes such a large mention of it in his fluff, partly because i like exposed bionics, and i put a lot of time into them to just cover them up!
1st contemptor is built, will probably add gears and symbols when theyre both done:
Woah Vit, i've only been away a couple of weeks and you come up with that monstrosity, (in a good way, obviously). Cannot wait to see him with some paint. The contemptor is looking beautiful as well, definitely my favourite weapon set up, looks wise anyway, no idea what it actually does.
@dave: Yeah it kinda does. Maybe thats why it looks so badass in that configuration!
@solstice: Cheers!
@Gits: Why thankyou sir.
@J: Haha thanks buddy! The ml is just a typhoon ml, the asscans are special heavy 6 versions. Definitely my favourite loadout too, followed by major toms sword and shield pattern, with the conversion beamer running a close third.
@graven: Thanks, thats tonights project, along with finishing that first marine i started.
Built the other contemptor whilst watching transformers for killy robot inspiration!
Haha, i dont think ive ever been complemented in that manner before! Thanks regardless.
Seeing as im in the middle of sculpting i may as well update. Heavily scarring the melee contemptor with a knife atm, as well as sculpting cog trim and opus machinae on the shooty dude.
Was just gonna be lazy and go to sleep, but seeing as you sounded so excited.... You can get a better look at the battle damage when it gets some paint, hard to see atm. The contrast is dodgy so you can see the damage better.
@Regnak: Appreciated buddy! Paint will be forthcoming, once i figure out how the hell to de-gunk my airbrush. Hoping this vallejo airbrush cleaner does the job.
Also, my brown stuff is here, joy! Should make sculpting sm armour a lot easier.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Figured id show you how the 1st marine is progressing. This shot looks a bit odd, but the overall effect is coming together i think! Gonna get out the brown stuff and sculpt the harder edges now, and do final details. Then the plan is to cast/press mould this blank base set, and sculpt them into different armour marks.
Just finished cleaning my airbrush, and am about to go to bed. Fingers crossed it works when i start it up again. Will not have any updates tomorrow as it is friday, therefore i will be drunk.
Its a pain. Im hoping its fixed, because the paint wouldnt atomise. Air would go through but nothing else. I soaked everything bar the main body (so things like the valve, cup, needle nozzle etc) in vallejo cleaner, so fingers crossed.
Yep, That's a clog in the nozzle!.....you have no choice but to tear it all the way down at this point....I know you've been avoiding it, but you've gotta
Be careful, the nozzle is tiiiny, DO NOT drop it in the trashcan!! Don't over tighten it either when you put it back in, and of course make sure you don't bend the tip of the needle.
I have stripped it a far down as is actually possible before, and the nozzles didnt look to have any obstructions. Ill give it a whirl this evening.
It may just be that its kicked the bucket, which would be annoying given that i bought it in feb. Although tbf it was only a fairly cheap veda off ebay.
Haha thanks neil. The true scaling has been on my to do list for a while now, its gratifying to finally make a start.
Also, i believe thats the first ever time ive had one of my minis described as 'viscous' before. Not sure if thats a good quality for a permanent model to have though!
Now that's more like it mate The new revised legs are really great, I'm glad you redid them
The contemptor is looking mean as hell, I love the cog tooth rims you've added!
Now I just need to ask you where you got that gorgeous Iron Man model/vignette/toy whtever it is, I WANT ONE TOO!!!! I'm a huge fan of Iron Man and would love to get my dirty hands on a nice model as this one
I saw it on the Danish release day (the 26th of April) in 3D, which I normally don't care much for, but the 3D actually worked pretty damn well I can only encourage everyone to go see it in cinema, as it is absolutely worth it and one of the best movies I've seen and certainly the best superhero movie to date
Yeah I never got that either, would make sense to release it in the states first On IMDB it says it is released in Japan in august XD so at least they have it worst than you guys :p
And Rogue Wolves, I'm sure it's just as great in 2D The movie really is so action packed, and really really funny as well, Robert Downey Jr. really shines as Stark here, the best performance of the 3 movies and the other 2 are sublime so you're in for a Stark treat in this one
Besides that, Mark Ruffalo has delivered the single best Bruce Banner performance ever imo, he really does the character justice and Hulk is just awesome in The Avengers
the fact that you said its more starky that iron man one sounds tasty! i already laugh everytime in the trailer when cap says - "take away the suit blah blah then what are you"
rob says - "genius billionare playboy philanthropist.."
Yeah that comeback is priceless XD I must say The Hulk has a great one too, after a little boost with Lokii ;D
Although the whole Marvel rendition of Thor is miles from the original mythology (I'm Danish, we learn a lot about vikings and Norse mythology in school as it's our national heritage) but from a superhero universe point of view the movie version is actually really great and they made it fit nicely with the rest of the Marvel universe and still keep some of the actual mythology there And Chris Hemsworth do actually look like he could easily be from Denmark, Norway or Sweden :p
what tools are you using to sculpt? Yeah the brown stuff is good, I use grey stuff on certain things they probably are similar. Getting those legs to be a smooth even surface is a very hard thing as I've found out, I got some silicone clay shapers and it really helps me now. But then again you always can cover up any roughness with awesome paint jobs and gear...
@Meade: I have a variety of colour shapers, in different shapes sizes and firmness. I use them to do the finishing work and detail. A generic sculpting tool does the rest. I find myself using an extra firm (black tip) with a cup shape most, particularly on this project.
Yeah the legs are a major pain in the ass, i need to file then again. Now i have the brown stuff i may cut off the rough bits and re-smoothen it. Hopefully awesome paint will cover it! These marines are gonna be pretty beat up so weathering and chipping should sort that out.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Probably gonna add couple of mm to the upper arms, as im planning on using normal sm arms. Reckon that'll be enough?
Automatically Appended Next Post: So turns out i managed to fix my airbrush after all! Would heartily recommend vallejo airbrush cleaner to anyone.
With that great news i figured i should test out the primer. it works great! No smell so usable indoors, which means i dont have to worry about a bad/fuzzy prime due to weather or flat out not being able to prime. Covers like a dream too, i really do love airbrushes now. Only had it a while and its just changed the way i paint completely.
Of course that led to me priming a mini, picked a random sm which turned out to be an unfinished techmarine.
Of course i couldnt stop there, so i whacked out the green and painted him as a test model! Turns out the 2 colours of green i purchased on a whim work perfectly with scorpion green to give a fantastic looking emerald imho. So here it is, all the other colours are just basecoated. I am very happy right now!
So i decided that now im on holiday for 3 months i should really get my arse into gear. I had a good few days after finishing to vegetate and de-stress, but im starting to get bored so im gonna hit the projects hard.
To that end, ive decided to finally bust out the airbrush again and finish this damn warhound!!! I got disheartened after having my 0.3mm needle break when the make shift airbrush stand i had fell over, but after a bit of testing the 0.2 needle works fine, and actually ive managed to develop enough control to comfortably freehand colours. That said i did mask the weapons to be sure.
So without further ado, heres the progress on the khaki colour, should get the shading and highlighting done after i wake up today.
Cheers Gits and dave! Yar i need to remember to keep a stock of spare needles so this doesnt happen again! Damn things bend so easily.
So tonights progress, got the red trim done on two things, and the method is learned so the rest should go smoothly, very happy with how the red turned out, even if the pic is terribad at showing the gradient. Dont judge its 4am
Man! That is gorgeous!! Well done! THe painting is ACE! You really nailed the color selection too!
Camouflaged titans never made much sense to me, they are not designed to hide from anything, but rather to be seen...clearly...just before it kills you
inmygravenimage wrote:Wowser - she's a beauty! The eyes are luscious mate, great shading on the skulls, gradient transitions have worked well - top notch!

Ta! I dont mind camouflaged titans, but much like space marines i feel they have a time and place. Bedecked in resplendent livery is how i prefer my machines of war
After a hectic house move, ive finally finished up the Warhound Titan. Very happy with how this turned out in the end. The osl was the first time using the airbrush, theres definitely room for improvement, but im happy nonetheless.
Without further ado, have a butt-load of pictures
Some detail shots, and interior:
Spoiler:
And because it amused me, heres a before and after shot. Quite the improvement, if i say so myself.
Spoiler:
Hopefully you can see all the extras, like the purity seals, writing on all the scrolls, the grease/oil on the piston and ball-joints etc.
@LDD: Cheers! Yeah i had a chuckle to myself at how bad the previous paintjob was. Its very gratifying to physically be able to see an improvement in painting.
@Dave:Ta! I was a little worried id gone overboard in the cockpit. Something still bugs me about it, i think its the fact that if there was that much light coming from the console, the rest of the interior would be dark, which it isnt in the model. Oh well, that can be for next time
@Rogue: Thanks mate!
Next on the plate im spruecing up a load of old stuff to ebay. Doing a baneblade into a plaguereaper atm.
Should i show progress here, or start a new odds and ends/ painting to sell thread?
Great job Vit, all the more impressive for being a rescue. I would say that I have to agree with you about the overdone lighting in the cockpit, it's the only bit that doesn't quite gel for me. There's a Menoth-y feel to the colour scheme that I love and the battlescape is the icing on (under?) the cake.
Great work, Vit!
Finishing such a big project is always worth congratulations, but you also did it very well.
I like the color scheme a lot. It's very unusual, which is an entirely good thing.
The plasma weapon is top notch, especially the sooty vents.
Things you could have done better are:
stronger highlighting (which only works properly with airbrush at this scale)
more weathering (you could still do that, no problem and it would raise the quality significantly)
the osl on the plasma gun could be even a little brighter in the middle (more towards white, would look more volatile and threatening, but that's just me probably)
Looking stunning vit! really nicely done, wish I had the first idea what to do with an airbrush, you got any tips for those of us who literally wouldn't know where to put the paint? (Makes for funny mental images, trying to pour it in the nozzle.)
But seriously, awesome job! can't wait to see more now that your in full swing.

Cheers Baiyuan! Yeah its a shame you only really see 2 or 3 different titan legion colour schemes. Im getting very sick of the Legio Astorum's blue and gold
Haha, funny you should say that, i did actually use an airbrush pretty much exclusively. Id say only the cockpit and the scrolls etc were done by brush. I do think some more contrast on the metal was needed, and shading on the armour too.
Yeah weathering would be a go, but i dont have any varnish atm, so dont want to slather powder all over it and then have it rub off I realised that about the plasma blastgun too when i finished, oh well, we'll say its powered down

Ta J! I'll be honest, i have very little idea what im doing myself. It may not look like it but i wing it with everything i do!
The best place to go is the P&M section (the regular, not blog or showcase obv). There are literally tens of threads about starting with airbrushes there. Its not that expensive to get a basic airbrush and compressor either, and still manage to achieve decent results. Hell, the airbrush and compressor i use for everything only set me back £70. (£50 for the compressor, £20 for the airbrush) I find with careful use of masking you can achieve the same results as with an expensive one. Although saying that, ive got confident enough that i dont bother masking and just freehand with a bit of card to block overspray, saves so much time.
PDH wrote:Nice Warhound! Really like the colour scheme.
Thanks a lot Peter!
Ok, heres what ive been working on. Fixing up a Baneblade for sale, decided to make it a Plaguereaper. Apologies for the terrible picture.
I will say one thing though, i had no idea how fun it was to sculpt obese decaying people!
@dave: Eh, im not gonna lie, i dont really like the general approach to nurgle. Im going for rusted to feth metal. On the commander as well, i dont like your typical blob with hole in it nurgle rot. And having looked at far too many necrotising diseases on google (NOT A FUN THING TO DO BTW) its not that realistic either. Hopefully the rot and decay will be conveyed with painting
Ama-ZING!! I'm flabbergasted. Some projects are so good they inspire me. A very few (two, maybe three including this one, that I can think of) are so beyond anything I thought was possible, they break my will to live...
Plaguereaper looking amazing. The Hellblade.... well... hmm... ok, by no fault of your own because the craftsmanship on your model is excellent... but I hate that model and really hope that's not the final design when Chaos gets flyers. It looks like a space ship from a (really) bad low-budget movie on the Sci-Fi channel. At absolute best it looks like something that Dark Eldar would fly. There's nothing about that design that says 'Chaos' to me.
It makes lovely discordant music, for the reaping of the corpse worshiping loyalists

Ta graven! Hopefully i'll get the same effect across with heavy use of liquid masking.
Well i decided to make a thread for the stuff im selling, cos there appears to be a lot of it, and i dont want to clutter this thread. Please go here to check out the finished items, and if you fancy buying them pm me
Also, i decided enough was enough and went all Blue Peter on a cardboard box's ass. I transformed it into a beautiful lightbox, to hopefully increase the quality of my pics
The Leviathans are perfect for Knight Titans imo, and a steal at only $90 for an 8.5" multi-part plastic model:
Spoiler:
And the infantry should make some nice heavily armoured Skitarii:
Spoiler:
So in short i cant wait for those to ship so i can mess around
Ive also been playing around with a beaten up Land Raider which i was trying to sell. After looking at it just sitting there i couldnt resist the urge to pick it up and chop it to pieces
I took the top plate off and witched it around, so it is essentially a backwards land raider now. I havent got any pics yet because, well, it still looks like a backwards land raider, and i havent figured out how to change that yet. Still hopefully i can turn it into a passable version of a Land Raider Achilles.
In other news im almost about to move back to Bristol again, having spent a couple of months relaxing at the family home and recovering from first year of uni Once there i intend to buy a considerable amount of plasticard in bulk, and start a warhound or thunderhawk sweatshop. We'll see whether that ends up going anywhere
SO just a text update reminding you this thread hasnt died yet. Should have some pics of the LR in a couple of days.
