It would be great for a while, but when everybody around you including the one you love grow old and die, again and again it becomes quite sad.

Quite a different story if everybody gets it. But its kind of sad if your family is so large you dont even know the childs of your childs of your childs grandchildren.

This brings up a good point. There is a fairly well known species of wasp that lays it's eggs in a living caterpillar. Does the wasp feel remorse for the caterpillar? No, they are entirely different, although the wasp metamorphisized from a larva that was characteristically similar to the caterpillar it now inflicts the suffering upon.
What I'm getting at is that some people, when granted the power of immortality, will no longer see themselves as 'human' therefore the suffering will be distant.
With such great power as immortality grants, the meaningless slaughter would be like an adolescent torturing small animals for fun. Disturbing as all gak.

Exactly, which is what I was getting at earlier.

It would then be up to the immortal himself/herself whether or not to indulge themselves and become a monster.

Really the outcome depends on the person. You see that as being a bad thing. I see it as being able to fall in love not once in a life time, but many times in a life time. Would it be hard? Yes of course. But it would also be an incredible experience sharing the life of so many people. The best part is, after some time, and the knowledge youve acquired, you would be better able to describe such feelings to later generations.

And who says you HAVE to know your great great great great grand children? I would personally keep tabs on them just cause. And again, if your Immortal (and lets not forget to allow your brain to function perfectly as well, so you dont, you know, run of of memory) you would be able to remember them all, even if you just chronicled them like a historian. I think it would be one of many projects Id have going on, because again, I only have forever to get it done, whatever it is Im doing.

Agreed. Believe it not, some people still hold doors open for strangers, or help old ladies across the street, or watch neighbors houses when they are on vacation and so on and so on and so on. The world is dark for sure, no arguing that, but it still has a LOT of good in it as well.

TBH, that is the best justification for immortality I've seen thus far.

It all depends on your view of the world (yes, perspective). Let's face it, if you view the world as negative, then it will be negative and you yourself will be negative as a result. If you view the world positively, then it will be positive and you yourself will be positive. Some say immortality is bad because you can't treasure things anymore...I believe the opposite. Its because you are immortal that you will treasure things all the more because it will eventually fade and be left as a memory. Just as mortals enjoy life, immortals can enjoy it too, and probably would treasure every fleeting moment more dearly than a mortal would - especially the 'older' the immortal becomes.

You claim to be so positive yet apparently humans are uninteresting and destruction is the most beautiful thing in the universe.

Among the most beautiful things...the most beautiful are glorious nebulae and brilliant supernovae that shine across the Heavens, or a cherry blossom tree in bloom. Humans have limitless potential, but nature and technology, the former in all its chaotic splendor, and the latter with its sleek promise of perfection and ordered science are much nicer to contemplate.

I don't think ruling an empire or getting involved in politics would be interesting at all after like a few days.

Surely, you'd rather spend your time learning, doing lots of drugs, eating and sleeping then dealing with the day to day crap of ruling billions of humans.

I don't think being immortal would also suddenly give you the ability to be a illuminati type character controling world politics, not atleast until you're really, really old and have tons of cash. Even then people wouldn't listen to you, i'm sure they'd find you interesting but this don't mean they want you to be in charge.

Sure, you can try to seize control but you still feel pain, and you can still be chained up and covered in cement.

That's what I will do when I have my empire.
It'll be like Rome...except more decadent.
And that stupid probability changer think stops any sort of cement shenanigans.

You don't have to seize control, you just have to make sure those who are against your plans don't.

I don't see how you can get to the point to be able to order someones death.

Timeline:

Become immortal.

Declare yourself and encourage all countries to take you as their leader to unity humanity.

?????

?????

Profit?

Id say hell yeah in an instant! And who would i make immortal with me? A dog (most likely a Rottweiler), an eternal companion who will be with me threw thick and thin, and who can be a great time killer.
To heck with making another human immortal as i would be a living deity.... i would not need someone getting drunk on power and opposing me and starting a great crusade style apocalypse and essentially killing of the only intelligent race that we know of.

My pocket universe....... thats a tough one

I can't say that I personally agree with granting immortality to something that cannot appreciate it. I love animals, but they simply do not number their days in the same way as humans. You do have your point though...

Yup...though personally I'd rather go enjoy myself and just wander the universe for 'interesting tidbits' or troll every other sapient species. Or if Humans get in a heap of trouble with aliens, I'd lay waste to whoever those buggers are.

Maybe, though you could probably be like Draigo and end up being entertainment for them.

Draigo is most certainly not entertainment - he is an irritant at best, and a nightmare at worst, a lance aimed right at Chaos' heart.

I just like to think they just let him go around to entertain them.

Everything he breaks gets fixed shortly after anyway.

It's pretty much the only way to make him Grimdark, so it's most certainly the correct interpretation (or at least, the one conveyed by the author).

Otherwise he's just boring.

Boring? More like the biggest Ward-based irritant ever made. Now enough about that...as I was saying, as an immortal I'd just just wander the stars and find interesting things and go raise hell on whoever makes trouble for Humans (assuming they can't handle it). Or if Humans accidentally or deliberately send themselves back into a pre-Industrial state, I'll fix it so they can get back to an Interstellar state in a couple of millennia.

I would choose Immortality, wait a few millenia then in the 41st millenium become a space marine!

When was it established that as an immortal youd have crazy psychic powers? I thought the OP just wanted immortality

Well I would immortalize one of my friends with me. (Who is a girl)

Then she's stuck with me for forever. Ha jokes on her!

Lord Asherian the Immortal... hmmmm.

The whole bending probability thing that came with it in the first post. May not be crazy psychic powers but it's close enough.
