Glad I could help and very happy you like the work. I appreciate feedback.

I opted for $1.50 finishing tacks that were ferrous. This cost so little and meant no need to fuss over polarity. Worked like a charm!
whalemusic360 wrote:That's a butt load of Knights!
YUP! And soon I will be painting up that many for myself too. Plus 6 or so more for my 30k Questoris army too. By the time I am done, I will be all Knighted out, for sure, since that will mean since their release I will have done ~20.
Also, PICS!
Can't recall if I posted it, but I did a banner mod so it would reflect the AdMech loyalty. Then there is the group shot of everything ready to paint. After that, the finished bases and then the Omnissiah Relic that is magnetized onto that part of each Knight's carapace for easy swapping. Quite a tough project, but should really be a blast to see it all on the table someday. This client doesn't live far from me right now (2.5 hours) and actually lives in a town I am considering moving to! So hell, one day my five House Mortan Knights might be squaring off against his five.
hk1x1 wrote: Wow, that's a lot of knights, and lot of work. I'd probably never get anything like this finished, as I would want to convert each one .
The only thing I wish I could convert would be the leg poses. The rest is all pretty easy to change up, but those legs! I need to learn how to change it up eventually. I don't want my guys to have only one pose, if I can avoid it, but I hear it is a royal pain in the rear to do.
Whew. Started a new job and I haven't had a hot minute to get online and share the progress, which has been miserably slow!
This weekend I am free, so I am totally going to crush it. Until then, here are some progress shots! First one is all the Knights as they were before I started the trim and details. Bottom one is the gold trim base, before I hit it with washes and edging, etc.
A lot left to do!
Also, for the heck of it, here is my hobby/commission progress report for 8/28:
Personal Projects:
110th Cadians "Shadow Corps" (40k)
House Mortan Baronial Court (40k)
Marines Malevolent Strike Force (40k)
(Undecided) Skitarii Maniple (40k)
House Vyronii Questoris Knight Army (Horus Heresy)
"Ironskin Tribe" Ogre Kingdoms Warband (AoS)
Almost done! House Terryn one has a few details left. Got to anchor them to the bases and dullcote them. So very close to done. Then final pics and they will be ready for the client.
Also, my House Degallio Knight was on the front page, which was a nifty surprise!
And they are done! FINALLY! It only took me nine long weeks of work from start to finish, but here they are before going to the client tomorrow. Pics aren't the best, but the light box setup isn't really final. Sadly, I didn't have time to secure some ripstop nylon to diffuse and had to use polyester. It left some nasty glare that was tough to rectify. I might try throwing them through Photoshop tomorrow or ...like next week, just to see if I can clean them up a bit.
Anyhow, next up - Iron Hands. Orks, too. And Blood Angels! Then I go on painting hiatus to pursue painting my own plethora of armies, which include:
House Mortan Baronial Court (5 Knights)
House Vyronii Questoris Knight Army (awaiting decal release from FW)
Cadian 110th "Shadow Corps" Army
Agripinaa Skitarii (unless my decals turn out like crap, then I am going Mars or Ryza)
Agripinaa Cult Mech (need to buy this so I can go War Convo!)
Ironskin Tribe Ogre Army (Square base style, Aos and maybe KoW)
Khorne Warband (Round bases, AoS)
Marines Malevolent (...need a lot of Grav-Cannons to proceed here)
Skorne Army (standard red and gold, most likely)
So I ran across these Presidential plastic heads at Hobby Lobby. I was like... "What if I cut up, glued bits, and did some greenstuff work on these and painted them like huge statue busts for terrain?" $4 later and I will be embarking on just such a hilarious folly. I may use them as objectives, terrain decor, or something to spice up my display boards. I have a few I can cut up to make them look like busted ones, too. We will see, I suppose. First few will be that standard patina bronze that looks so good on like anything ever.
whalemusic360 wrote: I dig the knight shoulder pad conversion. How hard was it to do?
Less than fun. I am not a big conversion person, either. I just lined up my saw and let fly. Glued down some shaped plasticard to give it a more robust edge, drilled some holes for the rivets to sit in and that was about it. Having to do the plasticard edge gave me huge fits though, because it is less precise than I would like. Thankfully, it was to look worn out and battered by war, so I think it works.
I wish I had been able to add the chainmail drapery from under the shoulderpads as planned, but that didn't work. I could get a good enough mold via Instamold and just am not great at sculpting it by hand. So it wound up being scrapped, sadly. I think that might have really looked awesome, but I did what I could given my limited conversion skills.
Ork Painboy for the "War for Tots" Charity Auction is underway! Trying to find time between my dayjob, commissions, and the gym. Not exactly easy.
Also, Stalker/Hunter is 99% done. Headlights, some small touches. So close!
After that, Scouts for the Iron Hands.
Oh yea, and a shot of the plume for the 25 Ork Stormboyz I am working on.
On top of all that, the Knights I painted (sans the Terryn one, sadly) won 2nd place at the "Armies on Parade" contest at the GW store in Charlotte.
So, after da Orks, I hop onto the Blood Angels and Gerantius. That should catch me up for a while, though with the new Horus Heresy set, I am hoping to score a commission for at least one of those someday. Hoping to also start on my own work eventually... years later I say this! lol But yea, the Knight foam should be on purchase on Black Friday (Battlefoam!) so I can start building/painting my House Mortan army. Still waiting on Vyronii to get decals from FW, so the 30k Questoris army is still in a holding pattern.

Almost done! Stain is setting before I buff it with wax. Final pics to follow. Then back to the nearly finished Iron Hands. Stormboyz, Blood Angels and Gerantius also on my workbench. Then I should be caught up and ready to start plinking away at my own extensive collection.

Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, next personal project:
Trio of unique plinths! Akin to the Ork Painboy I did recently.
I am thinking of selling them, but the chance to push myself would be very useful. Commissions are somewhat limiting in regards to experimentation, so I think this would work.
I may do one for myself first, to keep. An Eversor in the Underhive. Then, I am figuring some SM characters or some such. Anyhow, just throwing this out there. Progress shots eventually, because commission s do come first.
My client picked up his Iron Hands and promptly had more projects for me! First up will be a retro Knight Freeblade. That should be fun, because it is so Rogue Trader-esque and all that.
The other two models need retouching. The Storm wolf mod for the Iron Hands really, really needs a lot of work. Redoing it essentally. The painter who worked on it prior over sprayed a ton, didn't paint some stuff, and didn't really do any white for some reason. The Land Raider isn't as bad, but needs some love. I am going to sand down some paint spots where it was gobbled on (red areas) and see about fixing the black to match the army. And of course, it needs a white stripe or some such.
So, a lot to do to recover those two model and have them match. The Kn8ght will be a labor of live though. Mud base, rusty smashed Renegade Chimera, and new Freeblade iconography. Lots of fun stuff to come!
Next up on my workbench are the Orks and Gerantius. I will hopefully be blocking in more Ork colors this week and start the metallics on Gerry too.
Here are the models for the 6th Annual "War for Tots" Charity Auction. The Gabriel Seth might look familiar to those who participated in the Nova Silent Auction. One player here generously donated it! Can't wait to see how much my Ork pulls in. I want to top $60, which is what my Crimson Fist landed last year!
Here are some Stormboyz all painted up for a client. Fun trying to do the rocket exhaust things. Overall, I enjoy painting Orks, but never more than like... 5 at a time. Otherwise, they just get tedious. Still, had fun with these dudes.
Also, Gerantius is done! I really had a hard time matching his colors with Vallejo, but I think I managed. The dark green was a fun exercise in restraint. Lots of thin, thin layers of green over black really made it look green under the lights, but it is still pretty subdued.
Also, the Throwback Knight is underway. He is fixed to the custom base, as is the Chimera. This has proven a hell of a challenge. I need another roll of masking tape already!
i hadn't checked on your thread in over a month...
how fun to click on the page, and see my Gabriel Seth model...

So it was YOU who painted that model! Holy crap man, that was gorgeous work. It stole the show at the local auction! It got quite a bit, though I can't recall an exact amount and the proceeds went to Toys for Tots!
Thanks for the kind words, too. I am doing all I can to progress my painting nowadays. It has been a real challenge.
I am about to order my Metalica decals. So, for the first time on my P&M blog, I will begin working on something for myself. Metalica and House Raven War Convocation.
Solar_lion wrote: I'm impressed that you do you bases en mass. I love the grittiness of them I'd love to see a step by step thru them if you are so inclined.
Ah yes, my standard "urban ruins" bases. I will do up a fee when I get a chance to do a step-by-step got you. I know that client has one more model anyhow, so I think he will be on a nice 32mm base. Should give me plenty of room to show you various things.
Got the studio set up about ....60%? Maybe. Did some work, either way. Rescuing some very poorly painted Iron Hands. And apparently, the dude who painted the Land Raider originally like... didn't wash it and/or prime it, because my masking tape ripped off paint down to the resin. UGH. But yea, these went from "touch ups" to full-on rescue and they are... getting there.
Also, more Khorne stuff because it was a damn good deal at my FLGS (30% off WHFB boxes and 10% off AoS!). So, just need 6 more Skullcrushers and a Jugger Lord for my Brass Stampede. The Skullfiend tribe is taking shape!
And the Iron Hands are now done. My client did a nifty kitbash on the flyer, turning it from a Stormwolf to what I have now christened the "Ferrum-pattern Stormhawk", which is an STC Stormwolf variant built for the Iron Hands. Both models were just in terrible shape when I got them. The Raider was all dryrbushed metallic and no real love to it, so I tried to give it a bit of life. The flyer was... red, mostly. No masking used and just airbrushed horrendously (see pics below). Now, they will match all the Iron Hands i have done for him thus far (just take a look back through the blog here to see!).
Next up, Blood Angels and some Dark Angel characters. After that, I finally take a crack at my own projects. Skullfiend Tribe AoS army in the works, my Metalica & Raven War Convocation and maybe just a trio of House Mortan Knights done as a Barional Court (to free up some for my 30k army), though I may do the original five. Still working out the kinks of my custom decals for this, actually.
And... I can't decide on a 30k Space Marine faction to save my life. About to just sell the stuff and go Taghmata! Not really, but it is tempting. I am drowning in the excess of variety!
Right now, I am back to contemplating World Eaters with a small side warband of the Unspeaking Chapter of the Word Bearers. We will see... lots to do before I have to settle. And there is always the new stuff (Black Shields!) to consider.
For 30K i went Alpha Legion, I was hard to decide as there are still chapters that haven't been rolled out. I had to pick as I'm in a 30K game at Adepticon.

Thanks!
I told myself I wouldn't do a metallic Space Marine army. Just doesn't seem like it pushes the envelope of painting as much as traditional. So, that rules out Iron Warriors and Alpha Legion.
I am a perfectionist, so I can't really just settle. I need to have love for my army. I am hoping to see them roll out a lot for the Black Shields maybe. Might be fun to do some sort of marauding warband.
I just started tossing around a Black Shields list that amuses me greatly. 60 dudes in a Spartan and Mastodon. Viable? Doubtful. But would it be neat to go crazy with unique paint schemes on that stuff? YES!
For now, my focus is on wrapping the Blood Angels and moving on to my War Convocation. Right now, rumors are for some new stuff for AdMech this year, so that has me excited too. Options are always welcome!
And I haven't forgotten that base tutorial. My client just ordered his last model (new BA Chaplain) and I will be doing that base up all rubble lookin'.
whalemusic360 wrote: I'd be shocked if it wasn't at least 300gbp. Supposedly coming out in April after the molds had to get retooled.
Actually, that isn't too bad. And of course, I only say that because the pound has dropped so heavily. I mean, $415 is no small amount... but it is HUGE and detailed. I just hope it isn't a dud unit. I would hate to see it popped in a single round.
Solar_lion wrote: FW has been putting out a bunch of new transfers lately.
Yep and these escaped my radar and I have been in a tragic malaise thinking my beloved God-Eaters were being ignored! Not that case! These really should hit any day now, if the Makabius ones are an indicator. Literally this and some foam are all that stand between me an my 3000pt Questoris army. I didn't want to start it and have to wait on decals that may never show up, but this gives me a lot of hope! Time to start a few airbrush trials for the emerald armor.
hk1x1 wrote: Nice work on the base, and I like the pose as well, very dynamic.
Thank you! I love making bases.
As for the pose, that is all GW. Can't say I am happy with the monopose clampack concept, especially given the price point. $30-ish for one guy in one pose? Why not make it like the SM Commander kit with a slew of options? Just seems like a "model company" would do more. /endrant
Solar_lion wrote: Thanks for the Step by step. Are you using ' White' Glue on the bases?
My pleasure.
I didn't on the Chappy base because I wanted it done quickly and didn't want to wait for drying time. I do usually though, due to cost efficiency and working-time.
Scored a good buy for my Skullfiend Tribe, plus saw some dudes at my LGS slugging it out with two underdog armies. Orks and Chaos mixing it up. By far one of the more fun, fluffy games to watch that day!

Stormhawk?! I should send GW a C&D, since I named a flyer that first.

Sternguard and Vanguard Vets. My client is making that freebie formation. Plus, some flamers, eviscerators and plasma pistols for his Assault Squads. Termie Libby and the Chappy.
I will have the Chappy done soon, so I will post pics when I do.
After this, my BA client only has 10 Scouts for me to do and he assures me his collection is complete.
Also, painting two FoW Tiger tanks. I will post some pics shortly. Doing ambush camo.
I had contemplated doing a 30k Black Shields army and I loved the idea of camouflage, so seeing this on the FW Bulletin today really made my day!
I wonder what they are doing painting up a Rhino that way. That guy painting it is Andy, the Specialist Brands Product Manager. The tinfoil hat part of me wonders if this isn't intentional... it isn't, but GW/FW have given me trust issues!

This looks to be my current "build list" for the WarConvo. I have everything in place except the Kastelans, which I am working on getting now. The names are all mostly tentative and for my own obsessive need to have fluff for everything ever.
Don't you dare tempt me! I already have a camo scheme I want to tinker with. I just need to figure out a list I can live with and/or afford (both unlikely).
I love, love, love the use of that Breacher helmet, btw. Missed chance to put a skull face painted on it, imo.
On a positive note for me as a hobbyist, my AoS purchases are almost done. Just need to finish the (now languishing) Blood Angels. Yes, I am still working on them and yes I feel bad. I have just run out of steam as a commission painter and when those are done, barring any Titans or other feather-in-the-cap models, I am done taking money for painting.
My projects are years old and still untouched - that has to change!
Do a camo 40k Badab war themed army (several have old school camo schemes), and a Blackshield 30k army. Then come to Adepticon and play all the things.
whalemusic360 wrote: Do a camo 40k Badab war themed army (several have old school camo schemes), and a Blackshield 30k army. Then come to Adepticon and play all the things.
-The Devil
I wouldn't do a 40k Camo Marine army. Just doesn't feel right to me. Still working on making Marines Malevolent, currently. But I am very much torn for the 30k option. Blackshields or World Eaters?! I can't decide.
whalemusic360 wrote: You could do some Blackshields that used to be world eaters...
Naw, when it comes to World Eaters, I like mine flying rodent gak crazy! I want to do a list with Kharn. I drew up a few, but don't exactly have the scratch to make it happen just yet. I need Spartans, Butchers, and a Deredeo for starters.
I mean, what is not to love about these crazy dudes!?
In the end, I will probably do a 3000pt World Eater list and make a small couple of Blackshield warbands to accompany my House Vyronii Knights.... whenever FW decides to actually release my transfer sheets!

Some lists I need more than others. Like my Vyronii list is waiting on just transfers, while the World Eaters I need... most of it.
Just posting this here for record-keeping and stuff, some with "fluff" and some just roughed out thus far. Maybe folks will be able to watch me as I progress towards these end goals, too. We will see!
whalemusic360 wrote: Big stompy robot lists are always fun. I don't see a Blackshields list in there though. Any idea which one you want to work towards next?
Blackshields are just giving me a headache. I can't find a list with them I like at all. :(
So, my order of projects is (once I finish the Blood Angels):
AoS Khorne Bloodbound - of which I have almost everything I need, just a box of Wrathmongers that should arrive Tuesday!
WarConvocation - just need Kastelans!
Knights - Just need a Warhound (debating on it still), and the Vyronii sheets. I own all the Knights I need!
I totally don't know what you mean... really... I swear....
Also, Blood Angel update, sorta. Took a shot of them on a table at my FLGS. The Libby was fun to paint. Now just to crank out the last 40 models and then I have 10 Scouts and a Land Raider, plus Gerantius, to do for that client.
Then my stuff will be on the table for the first time in like 6+ years!
Had a look at the General's Handbook. Been crunching numbers ever since! I have a 2500pt Warhost "build list" for that now, which is basically my old build list, but with points. Looks like I wasn't too far off the mark. Waiting to see if Forge World assigns points so I can run my big bad dude too.

So I am ready for a big ol' battle! Can't wait to start building. I have everything I need, just need to get clipping, gluing and painting!
I am trying to find a base style I like for my Skullfiend Tribe and these.... are not quite there. Not digging the color, I think I need to go darker in the root color, dark brown. Going for the blasted earth look. More crackle, more lava paste and less cork and ballast, for sure. Going to add dark green tufts after the fact - but don't want to waste them on testers.
Anyhow, I am getting stuff built finally - I will post a pre-paint shot of the whole massive Warhost I have. And I have three new-in-the-tube W&N S7 brushes and my still-unused H&S Infinity airbrush ready for these! Can't wait.
Heavy:
Kulvir, the Argus-Eyed A tenacious warrior known for a keen eye and uncanny marksmanship, Kulvir battled as a veteran War Hound during the Great Crusade. He was immolated in phosphex during the compliance of the Harax system. After being recovered barely clinging to life, he was interred in a sarcophagus, which was fitted into one of the few Deredeo chassis issued to the War Hounds (and later World Eaters). It was noted that his preference of a boltgun over the more common chainaxe earned him the right to the new, rare chassis, his kills with the weapon renown among a Legion known for their martial prowess in hand-to-hand combat. Since, he has proven a walking bastion and symbol of the Legion before its complete descent into madness, though unlike Lhorke and many others, he was never one to resist the tides of change.
Oooooof! That hurts my wallet, but hey, goes with the hobby. Sad I lost the Typhon, pumped I get to run Assault Squads and Javelins! I think the list looks fluffy and entirely competitive!
First up, worked on some Camo Cloak & Bolter Scouts this weekend... and holy crap, GW. Really? How are these kits not compatible?! UGH. It was just such a chore making things work. Did a Power Fist via an IG one and clipped up the ML for one guy too. Bases are simple, rough-urban style.
Got my Skaarac going - lots to pin and fix with heat before I can get to priming and stuff. He is big, but not THAT big. Still a nice centerpiece for my Skullfiend Tribe. I think I may do black skin, just to be a snowflake. Not sure.
And some of the FW Open stuff that caught my eye (thanks, Battle Bunnies!):
Cool looking Household. Wonder what their deal is!
DO WANT!
So absolutely disgusting. The rules for these make this Deredeo into 290pt of KILLS ALL THINGS.
Thanks! It was easy. Just cut the ears off the original and pinned/glued on the top knot (sans some absurd spinal parts) from the EDB.
Had to greenstuff the back of it to be seamless, since my dude has no ponytail anymore. I thought having the same helmet and chestplate would unify them as Bloodstokers, plus the whip, of course.
The pic is all washed out, but a vast chunk of that whip arm's underarm musculature was sculpted in greenstuff. Same with the other underarm. I am trying to get better at Green stuff sculpting, so I can add more life to future projects.
Ferocious start, look forward to more of your Ogres If it makes you feel even better about the army, the fatties are stupendous in AOS, easily the best edition of Warhams for the army (and I've played them since the 7E book first dropped).

Thanks!
Yea man, I hear they are brutal. I am waiting on the Gutbuster supplement to drop before I get too far in. I want to see how their fluff has evolved since the End Times. Tentatively, my Ironskin Tribe was led by their Slaughtermasters/Butchers into the Great Maw, which spit them out into the Eight Realms (probably realm of Chamon). Unless GW gives me a better way to segway my old tribe into the new Mortal Realms, that works. Otherwise, I might just take on a new tribe, since I have yet to paint them anyhow!
And yes, Prisma is insanely addictive. My Instagram last week was like half Prisma posts of old drawings and models.
Finished the Blood Angel Scouts! And here is a better pic of the Libby and another obligatory Prisma pic - this one of the Clockwork Angel I did about a year ago now.
And now that I have spent some time going over Gutbusters and Beastclaws, I realize I have some purchases to make and some modifications to do.
Generally I need to go from Ironfists to second CCWs for my Ogors and get a few Thundertusks and some Mournfang Great Weapons (used mine for Ironguts). Sooooooo yea... No army is ever truly finished, amirite?
This weekend I will be updating my blog with my Skullfiend progress and I will be sure to post some pics here, too.
Oh yea, with the Skullfiend Tribe paint scheme, should look pretty awesome! (See below!)
And the rules are a nice help, since I wanted those models in my army anyhow, it rewards me for taking 9 and a Lord.
+3 to Charge rolls is huge for them and with a Hornblower, I am at 2d6+4" on top of my 8" move, so a good ~19" reach. Just got to get in and kill a unit first.
And auto-d3 mortal wounds for Murderous Charge is nice! That is a lot of mortal wounds and punishes my opponent if they cluster up, too and with the base size the Skullcrushers have, I can really spread this out.
Been so busy, I have had no time for the hobby! I am pretty pumped to have a chance to get working on this army again. Plus, going to take my Ogors out of storage.
Also, because I am a dork (and at work), I started getting an idea of paints I need! It is some legit MSPaint work, for real.
And here are my updates, now that I have a chance to post them here!
Here is the guy with the normal banner.
So I gave one guy a back banner, instead of having three dudes all carrying the same standard. I have snowflake syndrome and it shows. Each of these is unique to one another.
The heads of the hornblowers are unhelmeted because how else can they blow the horns? Also, I used two of the way cooler Skullreaper heads because... snowflake.
And here is a pic of my two Khorgoraths. The one with just Tamiya putty needs some greenstuff work, but I love the skull heads from the Necrosphinx. The horns give them a more Khorne feel, imo.
Anyhow, thanks for looking. More updates throughout the week, I hope.
The AoS starter doesn't really leave a lot of room for customization... so I have to do it the old-fashioned way! Cutting, greenstuffing, and using bits!
These Blood Warriors are now sporting twin axes. As much as I like how Gorefists look, these are just way better. The Skullreaper bits are getting a lot of secondary use in my army right now!
Also, you can see I filled the stupid-looking mouth in the Champ. I really, really hated that.
Started in on my Wrathmongers - here are the first 5 of my 15 that will comprise my Bloodstorm! These were more-or-less standard builds, though I filled in the spot for the 2nd arm on the one guy, because three arms is just dumb looking. My guys are more mortal than mutant. And pinning was basically mandatory on the Wrathmonger hands - I can see them breaking off on the reg in some foam just from odd tension and shifting. Hopefully, those chains don't break over time as they would be a pain to repair. The next 10 will be more unique looking as I start mixing and matching parts!
Also, gaps all filled and greenstuff all done on the Khorgoraths! Here's hoping GW releases a stand-alone kit of them with some variety, because I won't get more until they do... but I want more!
Nice builds. It really is frustrating making Bolter Scouts with the cloaks that I just get Recon Marines from FW. More expensive but much less rage inducing
WarbossDakka wrote: Nice builds. It really is frustrating making Bolter Scouts with the cloaks that I just get Recon Marines from FW. More expensive but much less rage inducing
Thanks!
My client wanted to be WYSIWYG with his army, so I had to suffer making Cloak & Bolter scouts. C'est la vie! At least my own Scouts, whenever I finally get to my Marines, will be CCW/BPs and Cloak-free.
Five more Wrathmongers done. These guys could use a few more leg options. Really bummed it is just the base 5. C'est la vie. Made this batch different and the next one will be different as well.
Also, I will post some pics later on of my second unit of five Blood Warriors kitted with twin axes. Modding the Starter models is a pain, but hopefully they look good. I need to buy a few boxes of the normal ones when I get a chance.
War for Tots 2017 is around the corner and I am brainstorming my charity auction donation!
Right now, it looks like I will be doing an Imperial Space Marine LE model in either Deathwatch colors or the Mentors Chapter colors. The idea this year is that they are stalking the sewers of a Hive for some unseen prey.
Like last year, I am going to use a wooden plinth, but this year it will be getting a huge notch cut out of it that will serve as the sewer wall. I will be setting the base into that and he will be wading through nasty water at the bottom.
Pics on this project to follow when I go from concept to execution.
I did pick up some Mentors decals and honestly, as cool as that Chapter is, I might make a contingent of them for myself afterwards!
I am going to be getting at least one set of these poseable Knight legs soonish. This means that out of my... 11 Knights? I think I still have 11 unbuilt.
Anyhow, out of my collection, I can repose TWO Knights from this one set. I can leave one of the originals in place and just add half of this set to another, while adding a stock leg to this set-up on another or some such.
I most likely will try out some guitar wire to make up for the lack of the tubes/wires.
If anyone reading this has used them, hit me up and tell me how they are!
I have officially starter this years War for Tots Charity Auction donation model. Going to be doing an Imperial Space Marine of the Mentors Chapter. I was going to do him stalking in a sewer, but really just didn't have the stuff for it. Opted for a more generic "ruins" approach, because it will be more doable. I don't mind a challenge, but I got to be realistic and not go overboard on it. That being said, the round plinth will be home to the model - the big base anchored down, the small one removable for gaming.
I have already clipped and tweaked it, but this was the pic that made it up on Instagram yesterday. New pics to follow as progress gets made. For you Instagram folks, hit up #warfortots to see the progress (or follow me @oldhat02).
Heretic Tom wrote:I have a feeling you will easily achieve your usual level of epicness with this one.
Thanks! I will surely try.
And a quick update to the base - fits way better now. Looks more natural. Primed it earlier (black) and the polyacrylic is drying on the plinths. Will post pics of those soon. Priming the Imperial Space Marine soon - going to work to white up from black, probably warm tones (brown->bone->white) like I did with the Degallio Imperial Knight. I think warm tones will work, even with it being green too. Though I am not sure just yet... might have to just see the paints together to get a feel for it.
No news. Life has been immensely in the way of my hobby. The only thing I have had on my mind lately is Kill Team and have been thinking now might be a chance to do a fun Emperor's Children army. Saw a list that just screamed "this would be fun to model and paint!"
Crimson Slaughter (Detachment gains Fear)
Elites:
(6) Noise Marines
3x Sonic Blasters
Sonic Blaster w/ CCW (Reaping Volley)
Sonic Blaster w/ CCW (PE)
Blast Master (FNP)
Champ w/ Meltabombs, CCW (Leader)
Rhino
[200]
*** Potentially drop Meltabombs for Dirge Caster ***
I would use FW Kakaphoni for the basic dudes, strapping CCWs to waists where needed. A Deimos Rhino - because go big or go home. Plus, Eidolon with a normal base and using the Noise Champ upgrade backpack to serve as my Champion.
Finished! This is my donation to the annual "War for Tots" Charity Auction. My LGS has done it for many years and I always try to put in something. Last year was the Ork Painboy. This year is a Mentors Chapter Imperial Space Marine! Hope it fetches some good money and finds a good home!
evildrcheese wrote:Nice. Hope it raises a decent amount for charity!
The Mentors scheme looks great.

Heretic Tom wrote:Great job! Love the design of the base and all, really gives it some character.
Thanks guys! I love the Mentors. Going to add them to whatever 40k Marine Chapter(s) I wind up doing post-8th edition.
It proved surprisingly easy to paint. Just did the green, putty over it after it was dry, and did the white. Thought for sure it would be harder, but it wasn't! I figure I will do at least one Dev Squad with some new pattern of Grav to test and my own personal Imperial Space Marine as well. I mean, I got the decals, so why not?!
Not at all tooting my own horn, but am legit in shock! Going to buy myself a drink to celebrate. 8.8 is the highest rating my Knight has been at and of all my submissions to CMON, it is the highest (I took down the others as they were old as hell!).
Just figured I would share. I never expected it to get that close to a 9!
Annnnnnnnnd as a way to ease back into 40k and have a quick pick-up force I can take with me easily, I am officially making an Emperor's Children (Noise Marine) Kill Team. Should be a nice, fun project where I can try to push my paint skills back up a bit. I got kinda slack lately for lack of motivation. Hopefully, this picks me up a bit!
Here is the list:
Crimson Slaughter - Army gains Fear

Debating on Meltabombs going in favor of a Dirge Caster.
Only 7 total models on the table, but I think it has some umph and will have a ton of character!
Solar_lion wrote: Me too, though I have 5 currently. I do like the new knight.
Oh yea, I am getting the Acastus for House Vyronii for sure. I am guessing, like the Atropos, it will be a 0-1 include in a Questoris list. It is a BEAST, but I expect it to be expensive in points (and money).
Just wish that they would get my decals out so I can do it before I die of old age. Somehow, the Custodes sheet is out and the Space Wolves. Their book hasn't come out yet... and here I am, waiting on decals from a book that came out in Nov 2014.
Holy crap... it has been TWO YEARS since the release of HH Conquest. And still no decals for all but Makabius?! Come on, FW, that is nuts!
whalemusic360 wrote: Couldn't you make your own, or pay someone to do so? Might cost more, but at least you'd have em.
In theory, yes. Fallout does custom decals for like $40 a sheet or so (about double the cost of FW). The issue is that I can't get high-res images of the Vyronii iconography. FW just does such a great job. I have waited over a year now, what is a few more quarters? Besides, I am planning a cross-country move at the start of Q2 2017, so it might even be best for me to wait and do it once I am settled into my new digs.
Don't worry, I have projects for the interim. The Skullfiend Tribe, while on hold due to zero motivation, will get painted before too long. And I am trying to get funds for a World Eater army.
Plus I have that Emperor's Children Noise Marine Kill Team, too. That should be ordered shortly and will be a nice distraction as I wait for my Godeaters to get their decals!
Oh, and am still on the hunt for a Lucius Warhound too - I want a Warp Runners Titan to accompany Vyronii to war eventually.
The War for Tots is over and my donation to the Charity Auction has sold! It went to a local (who I think actually won the whole tourney too!) for $105!
I was very proud! Glad to see the Mentors Chapter Marine get a new home and always glad to know money went to Toys for Tots. Given the fact I am relocating next year, this may well be my last one - so I am glad I went out with a bang!
Solar_lion wrote:Congrats on a good show and for a good cause.
Thanks!
whalemusic360 wrote:Great model, glad you were able to raise money for a good cause. Hopefully you find something like that in your new local.
Thanks! If they don't have one where I wind up, I will just start up a West Coast War for Tots. I had actually always hoped it would catch on elsewhere. Plus, Foodhammer too!
Everyone I met when I went out West seemed very nice, so I am hopeful. Definitely feels weird though, since I have been going to my local shop for 10 years now and it is like a second home!
Cerastus Knight Castigator and an Imperial Knight fully magnetized.
Also, the Imperial Knight will feature the poseable legs from Souldark! (Getting a set or two for myself, too!)
They will be done up in Hawkshroud colors! YELLOW! One of my fav colors.
To push myself on this project, I want to try making good rippling water effects to show these guys are plodding across a ruined cityscape where pipes have burst!
Anyhow, just excited so I figured I would post about it.
Started in on some Blood Bowl teams. My custom human team will be the Death Dealers - white with black stripes and maybe gold accents. Skull icons for their team, instead of the usual stuff. The Orc team I am a bit stuck on, might just go for the Gouged Eye, but I am considering other options still. Hard to beat red armor with black accents though, though I did consider a yellow and purple option too.
Built the teams and started doing the bases up with Black Lava Paste from Liquitex. That stuff is solid gold! I will be priming it and painting it a bit muddy, then adding grass on top with white lines after that. Should look decent... I hope.
Anyhow, also managed to FINALLY get a chance to work on those busts I got like forever ago. Remember those? If you do, good on you. I forgot about them mostly as I tucked them into a bits box and they hadn't seen the light of day for ages.
I cut up Jackson and started gluing on bits and stuff. Working on making him an inquisitor or something. Not sure what to do with it, but I might paint it like a statue and give it to my LGS for terrain or something. No idea!
For my Kill Team, I wanted a more unique Rhino so I went for the Deimos. Well.... that wasn't quite Chaos-y, enough, so I got these too:
Hope they add to the brutal look. Also contemplating trophies... notably draped skin with greenstuff, if i can manage it. Otherwise, I might add some spikes per usual Chaos flair.
Also, ordered these for my Deimos Rhino and future projects (like my World Eaters dream army... sigh).
Going to be picking up a Death Guard decal sheet for my Blood Bowl Human team - the DEATH DEALERS! Going to use the crossed scythes and hourglass for them instead of just skulls. Plus, it lets me have the option to do a Death Guard army, if I want someday. Unlikely, but I am so committed to the idea of my BB team, its worth it.
Ordered the Triumvirate so I can officially run Cawl in my yet-to-be-started War Convocation - which has entirely been purchased at this point and it is shameful I haven't even started building it yet!
The Legs are from ComeradeQuiche (look him up on IG) and distributed by SoulDark. Poseable Knight legs! One set for a client, two for me - likely one for my Questoris army and one for my House Raven Knight to accompany Metalica.
Also, for that Kill Team, I want to make a display board with dead Ultramarines and some busted statuary and look what I found at a thrift shop and was given FOR FREE! Busted them up carefully and filled with miliput that will be sanded to look more like a broken statue. Should make my board suitably creepy. Now I am on the hunt for a baroque / rococo picture frame that will fit about a 9x12 piece of board. I think that would be pretty cool.
Anyhow, not pictured was some more work on the now year-long commission for a friend. Seriously, with life being so rough this last year or so, he has been patient and kind to let me take my time and not rush through what amounts to the last of his Blood Angel army (that I have painted over the course of about 5 years now!).
Next update, hopefully, will be build/sub-assembly shots of the House Hawkshroud Imperial Knights - a magnetized normal Knight and a Castigator. Very excited to be painting Knights again and this is my first foray into the Cerastus chassis!
Castigator is primed and in sub-assembles/pieces for painting (not actually attached to base, nor is the torso attached yet). Bases ready to be painted - doing water effects in them! Should be fun. Poseable legs are posed. They were tough to work with, but are nicely cast and a good time-saver for those of us without modelling abilities (I suck at that sorta stuff!).
Also, while cutting some ferrous tacks I use for magnetizing Knights, I managed to bust one of my old, trusty rusty clippers. :( I had that one for 4+ years. This is why I always have two on hand, because I was always paranoid this would happen. The other pair is over 5 years old... so that paranoia probably wasn't well-founded.
EDIT:
Also! My Noise Marine Kill Team is VERY close to being started. Waiting on some of Machinator's spikes to arrive for my Deimos Rhino (to make it suitably evil). Keep an eye (ear?) out for this stuff soon too!
Like the pose able legs. I be tempted to get another knight just so I can do something unique.
Looking forward to a Cawl paint up. Definitely an amazing sculpt.
Likely won't be painting up Cawl anytime soon. Going to have to wait until 8th before I commit. Got burned on my Ogres, not repeating that with 8th Ed 40k.
That being said, he is ridiculous looking and very hard to find a good way to do sub-assemblies. I figure ...upper and lower? That is as good as I can get I guess. Going to airbrush in the white and red for his cloak and hand paint in the rest, which sounds kinda laborious.
On an aside, on one of the AT preview documents, they showed my beloved House Vyronii and the leader of that group of Knights had THIS head. Losing my mind now, because that is epic and I wish FW would make it (they likely won't... hell, they haven't made their decals yet!).
Also on another aside, I ordered myself a damn Titan. That should be a fun project!
No, I scored a Lucius Warhound. The only "practical" Titan I can get for gaming. Going to be a Legio Astorum "Warp Runners" and paired with my Questoris Knight household for 30k (House Vyronii).
Basically, building/painting this Titan gives me something to work on until my decals come out... which feels like it will be never.
Some updates. BB bases done! Working on the Hawkshroud Knights. Cherub statues primed and the frame for my Kill Team display board is painted. WIP Knight bases.
HAH! Yea, it does! But no no, I just always paint them in far too many pieces and slowly assemble it to avoid any potential overspray because I am way too lazy to mask everything.
Thanks! Which stripes? The BB bases surprised me, because I just masked them off and hit them with the airbrush and I think it worked pretty well.
Finally committed to a Legion! After much deliberation and hand-wringing and crying/screaming into my pillow, I am going evil...pure evil. MURDEROUSLY Evil.
8th Legion baby! NIGHT LORDS! HYEEEEEEAHHHHH! *guitar riffs and blast beats*
SO! I took that plunge, finally. Ordered some third party bits recently because I am a damn snowflake (dammit).
Also, got all sorts of gnarly trophies and stuff from KFStudio because holy crap, they look cool!
I got just about one of everything!
Not crazy about all of these, but I wanted to magnetize Curze to have a helmet option!
These backpacks!
Lots of good stuff there, on top of the Terror Squad kits and Night Raptor kits I will be ordering in a little while to start building up my army. This is going to take me a while, because Heresy is NOT cheap and I have two builds I want to field. Drop Assault Vanguard and Terror Assault.
That's some cool stuff. Maybe not the 2nd group of helmets so much (the one on the far right isnt bad), but looking forward to seeing what you do regardless.
What's you basic plan for building everything? Plastics with add-ons, or full resin?
whalemusic360 wrote: That's some cool stuff. Maybe not the 2nd group of helmets so much (the one on the far right isnt bad), but looking forward to seeing what you do regardless.

The one on the far right is the one I was going to use for Curze! I think the others I may attempt modelling on or cutting up or something. Not sure yet, but I really wanted some unique options for my Primarch, since his normal head is a bit... bad? Not great. Not my fav. Love the model otherwise.
The other stuff is perfect for trophies and stuff. And marking out squad leaders and whatnot. I fell in love with that stuff the moment I saw it, because I am rubbish at sculpting and it gives me that gnarly, grisly grimdark I simply must have for me Legion.
Anyhow, resin is my go-to. The plastic kits are nice, but all I really need is stuff that isn't plastic now anyhow! I have basic dudes, but need a slew of Assault Marines (40 more or so!). That DAV list is killer... killer expensive, at least.
whalemusic360 wrote: Have you thought about the CSM raptors to add some flavor to the FW ones? Only a few minor details that are overtly chaos mutated.
I am not actually running Raptors. I am getting them for visual variety in my Assault squads and to help further define squad leaders. See what I mean about being a snowflake? I basically don't want any single model to look stock, because this is a Legion that prides itself in wearing the flesh and bones of conquered foes, as well as the most baroque and grimdark armor stylings ever. I am going full-on Thramas with them.
Zambro wrote: Still keeping tabs on this thread. Lovely stuff.
I have to ask, how did you do the blood bowl bases? They are friggin sweet and really realistic. I love them. I wanna go buy BB so I can copy them
Thanks!
They were very easy, actually. I used Liquitex Black Lava paste as my base layer. This stuff is about as amazing a basing material as you can get. I love it. It can turn out like such a wide variety of ground types depending on what you add to it, how you paint it, etc.
Once I put that down, I primed them and painted a few layers of dark brown with a middle-tone brown as the highlight. I didn't want the ground too bright. After that dried, I added a mix of three static grasses. Light and Medium Green Grass and Burnt Grass. I just sprinkled down medium, then dabbed down light and burnt randomly to make it look a bit more natural. All this was done with PVA glue.
And after it cured, I just used a simple bit of masking tape to form a stripe and hit it with my airbrush. I kept it splotchy and didn't go over onto the non-grass areas, so it looked like it had been roughed up by players.
Hope that helps! You should get BB just for the miniatures! Really awesome stuff.
I hate dealing with water effects sometimes. I built these bases with the idea that they would contain standing water. This was the plan!!
Yet... of course they leak like a sieve in ways I couldn't fathom. I tried one run without clay... failed. The pictured run with clay... failed a bit. I have since poured a less brown layer in to tone it down a bit (it was just too dark, imo).
I will know by 8PM tonight if it sets, but might give it 48 hours (so tomorrow at 8PM) just in case.
After it firms up, I am going to probably go in with gel medium and make ripples... if possible. Knights stomping like a T-Rex, amirite?
Folks... don't laugh, ok? I had some downtime at work and I really only have MSPaint there...
But I couldn't get this idea out of my head for my VIIIth Legion Vigilator...
BE KIND!
The idea is to transform Cypher into my Vigilator... the Camo pattern would be heavily darkened, which I conveyed very poorly! Chainglaive in in the upward position and a Raptor jump pack. Would need to cut/trim some stuff and add some trophies, but that is the jist of it.
Thank you for your kindness! My only hangup is that... I do kinda suck at conversions. I will give it a valiant effort. If I mess him up I will be SO SAD THOUGH!
Nice idea on the conversion. One word of (pobably unnecessary) advice: cut off cypher's hands and change the angle at which the new hands will be attached to the wrists to make it look natural. At the very least that is, repositioning at the elbows may be necessary as well. Love the idea though, excellent eye for how the parts would come together!

Oh yea. Likely cutting the hand off entirely and using the one on the Chainglaive itself... though you are right, that may take some elbow finagling. I will have to get my hands on the model to see if it will work at all!
Thanks. It just hit me when I was talking with my bud about the new Triumvirate and I was going to use the MkIV Command dude as a base, but that is so boring! This will be way more Night Lord-y.
What are thoughts on the face/head? I was debating on slicing back the hood and sculpting it down and using one of the specialty helmets I got (see prior posts). Probably one without wings. Or maybe just a helm under the existing hood.

Good luck

I'm a fan of a more downplayed style myself. May I suggest the chaos warrior skull helmet inside the hood?
Thanks! Wish I could take credit, but it is by-the-book for that team. I figure I will keep them long enough to learn and then sell them off, so I went with a pretty standard scheme.
More progress. I will do a nice set of pics when I get them to 100%.
I will be starting on THE DEATH DEALERS shortly. Yea allcaps. Fight me.
Just got Zug, Griff, and an Ogre in the mail and will be getting them going this weekend along with re-doing the base colors of my team. I lost some of my transitions with my white because I overdid it a bit.
The Gouged Eye are done (for now). I have the other tokens to do, but the dudes themselves are complete. Quite fun to paint! I may pick up more players for this team over time, but as it stands neither the FW model or the Troll really look good to me.
I got distracted with a sizeable purchase from Ikea, which also resulted in me re-arranging my studio. That means less updates here for about a week or two. Next update, hopefully, will be my referees!
Moltar wrote: Gouged Eye players look great! Nice to see more BB stuff on here. Tokens look good too. I can't find the motivation to bother painting mine :(
Thanks!
Honestly, I had my airbrush going and I figured why not? Tokens matching the team look sharp. Going to do the other two in black w/ checkers, so I have some variety. Just got to get my studio back up to speed. I had to shift my house around to accommodate new furniture and now my studio area is a wreck!
I have my Human BB team to do next, but I am taking a bit of a break from painting so I can get my new furniture painted (yea, I do my own furniture finishing!).
It has finally started. With 8th Edition being almost fully leaked (sans Codices, obviously), I have embarked on my army. Finally!
After over a year (or more... way more) of collecting Skitarii and AdMech, my Metalica army is a GO!
I have started with my Kastelen Robots and a Datasmith. I will be building the Forge World Archmagos on Abeyant as my count-as Cawl (though in cases when I need both a Dominus and Cawl, I will have a Cawl model too). The Archmagos will be able to be dismounted.
Part of the reason for this whole Archmagos/Cawl thing is because Cawl will be a Mars-only model, so I wanted an alternative that allows me to run him without it being him. Also, I am going to pick up a Macrotek, Thralls and Scyllax and some stuff to convert into a Dominus, servitors and maybe Fulgurites.
Dunecrawler is in sub-assemblies for painting and my Sicarian Infiltrators are built, with the Princeps in two parts so I can more easily airbrush the red underside of his white robe.
I am using the Archmagos FW model for my count-as Cawl, even though I own the Cawl model! In lists where I run a TPD, I will use the removable Archmagos and pop Cawl into the list properly. Though another reason I have a Cawl alternate is the whole "I am doing Metalica" thing and might need to opt for a different future character or some crap. No idea what the Codex will give AdMech.
Next build on my desk now is some Skitarii Vanguard. Two 5-man Squads with Arc Rifles.
That should give me generally enough for the start of the FLGS 8th League I will be participating in at the end of the month, so I am going to get to priming/painting shortly. I usually like to do armies in one big go, but I can't really do that and not miss out on the league, so I am going to crunch through this stuff and then build/paint in waves.
After the Vanguard, I am going to get started on the House Raven Knight Crusader for my 2000pt list.
Nice starting point for your Ad Mech. It'll be cool to see another non Mars army. My LGS has two other Ad Mech players, one did Mars colors and the other did Metallica. I almost did Metallica myself, and would have 25 years ago, lol.

Did you magnetize the crab?
Naw, I didn't magnetize it. I own two so I am just going to build the Neutron and Icarus. Those are the two major variants that will see play, so I should be set. Getting a third soon that will likely be a Neutronager as well.
I love painting white armies, so I had to go Metalica. Plus, they have awesome fluff. Can't wait to start getting some paint on these things!
I don't know their fluff. I know I skimmed it in the 7th edition coffees but that would be the limit of my knowledge. I went with Lucius, partly fluff and partly the colors.
I'm looking forward to seeing your army build and paint.

Thanks. Yea.... me too. And the time crunch for the league and the currently unknown starting points has me sweating! I am building my Vanguard this week and I think that should get me to where I can start priming and painting. But its going to be a hell of a weekend on the 25th/25th, because I think that is my main crunch time to get my starter stuff painted.
On an aside, I am going to grab a box and some PVC pipe to get started on the inevitable display board. Ordering some scenery too. Crates, haulers, and the Shadow Wars stuff.
The biggest assembly pain with Skitarii is the arms, they were a PITA, but maybe I'm getting to shaky in my old age, lol.
For the cloaks, I would hold them up to a light to make sure I couldn't see light through the two seams. I always needed to do a second pass of glue and holding each side to minimize the seam. I use the thin Tamiya cement, green label, and the stuff works great for this.
I'm curious to hear/see what you do about those seams. I did liquid green stuff on the outside and it made it better but not perfect. The inner side of the seams I left alone since they don't need to be perfect for what I'm doing.

I always go in with a few coats of Liquid Greenstuff on top of a thin line of glue (after it dries). I gob the LGS on and run my finger across to remove excess and file it when I am done. I do this at least two times (sometimes three or four). I always wind up with smooth, seamless joins.
Ok, I think I just rushed things by doing one coat of GS put on thicker and then filed it. I never though to pretend the GS was caulk and use a similar smoothing technique.

Yea man, that is the perfect analogy!
I use an old brush with water to feather and smooth as well. After the second coat is filed, I usually use a watered-down coat to make sure I don't have any roughness. I am sure primer will take care of that, but I am not one to muck about when it comes to these expensive toys!
So while I am not actively seeking commissions, I still take them case-by-case and I have wanted to do Team Yankee stuff for a while now and here we go! West Germans! They will be done in 3-Color NATO camo and shouldn't interrupt my Metalica project.
Speaking of Metalica, I got my last four heads in from GrimSkull. Once I get the bodies, I will have six Dakkastelans to run. Just go to... you know... buy the models.
I do lament my awful lighting. It washes out my transitions until I take final shots and even then, not ideal. I may well get a damn proper lightbox before I take final shots of this army.
Anyhow, gripe out of the way - here is my 500/800pt Patrol Detachment for a league starting Wednesday 6/28. I am up against it! Trying to be fast without compromising quality.
Kastelan hands are magnetized on the two I am doing, with future ones probably just Phosphor (won't likely need many with fists, so I have one that can go that way).
And my bases are WiP. Going for a world ruined in the wake of the Fall of Cadia and subsequent spread of Chaos. Metalica and House Raven march to reconquer worlds during the Indomitus Crusade. This world (unnammed currently) is a rusting wasteland of ruined manufactorums and dockyards. Weeds, bleached skulls, and all that. Hopefully, my display board will be able to convey this along with a nice placard detailing that.
Currently working on a TPD converted from the Archmagos from FW. Also, one large batch of bases done. Should get me through to week 2 or week 3 for the League I am in before I have to start doing more. Hopefully, I will have my basing kits and more scenery on order to add more variation to the army.
San76 wrote: Love the start to that arch magos! Has an old school 40k look to it
Thanks!
That was why I went with that guy over the standard 40k TPD, honestly. Plus, I magnetized his ....leg area? So I can take him off that base and plop him onto the Abeyant, which is on a medium oval, to count-as Cawl (in theory, though the weapons don't match so I might need to go back and magnetize the Volkite and Macrostubber... which would be a royal pain in the ass).
I caved and got these pretty awful-looking models. I am chalking that awfulness up to a paintjob I find unappealing. I am going to try to make these look better.... somehow.
Metalicawl (TM) is almost 100%. I am just debating on if I want to do red crenelations on his robe/hood. But I would likely need to hand paint them since I am for sure running out of decals... so... Yea. Debating still.
For now, he is at least tabletop ready. That base is also not likely to be his final one. I am working on one that accommodates that raised foot. I thought it could work as a like "walking" pose, but it doesn't look right so I started that new base expressly for that. I will move this one over to my SINGLE Ballistarii. Throwing the rest in the trash because I hate building and painting it.
Also, my Fulgurites. All 10 are done, but... holy crap did I hate them. Building them was a pain, they are not interchangeable really either and the neck cog things break at a funny look. The arms should have been jointed better and just... I hate these models. Glad they are done. Truly not my best work either - I will post glamour shots when the whole army is done, but they just didn't meet my standards and I may go back in and repaint some aspects of them.
Ugh. I love my army, but I hate building and painting it (excluding the Robots, those were fun!).
Got in another league game. Won! Kastelans are filthy!
Also, for those wondering why I have yellow robots - they were a pair of robots left by a fleeing AdMech force when the Chaos rift tore open across the Imperium. During the Indomitus Crusade, my forces discovered them defending a ruined world by themselves and to honor their service, they were allowed to keep their livery.
I thought it was a cool fluff was to give my army visual variety. Dome heads with tech readouts and yellow armor add a nice contrasty pop. My next two Kastelans will b Metalica.
Solar_lion wrote: awesome paint job.. I've heard of some builds with 14 robots.
Ah, my faithful follower. Thank you! I do what I can. Painting on a time crunch for a league has me going nuts. I did those yellow Robots in two days... which is unreal for my slow self.
I look forward to the next league which has no LoW restrictions - as I will be running my Knights. So expect a trio of those to be on my workbench in the near future.
As for any AdMech build with more than like... 6-8 at 2000pt, they are probably missing out on other useful stuff or are allying in stuff to compensate (Conscripts, usually). I think going for all Robots isn't awful... but is just insanely expensive at $69 for two 'Bots. I would want to keep room for lots of Dunecrawlers, personally. They are rock solid and it seems like the Robots are bullet sponges, meaning the Dunecrawlers get a lot less heat. I am going to be building two more this week for my next League game. They are just too good for their price.
whalemusic360 wrote: But think of all the identical looking techpriest dudes you get with the 4 boxes of robots!
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaa... no one needs more than 1-2 Datasmiths. Ever. I hate that they didn't sell him separate, but he is integrated in the sprues so that is that.
I will be stopping at 8 Robots MAX. I own six currently - four painted, two on my workbench. I will likely grab two more so I have six Metalica and my two lost-and-found ones. Anything more than that is overkill and a waste of points, imo.
They put out a tremendous amount of firepower using the ' just shoot' orders. Too much cheese for me. Add the refactor ( or kill yourself ) ability and it's a tough hill to beat them.
Looking forward to your new additions.
Oh and yes.. I never been able to take out a dune crawler. Solid anchor and gun Platform.

Well, given how bad AdMech were gutted in 8th, I take what I can get on the Kastelans. Especially knowing how awful they were in 7th Ed.
I will stop at 8 total Robots though - no more. And that is only because I have six of those alternate heads and wanted to do my yellow ones with domes (so I could paint the readout faces).
I am not a particularly cheesy player - but AdMech doesn't give wiggle room. Some stuff is awful, some stuff is stellar, not much exists in the middle.
The Skitarii have proven to be my absolute least favorite models to paint. These are 99.9% done - though I may revisit the backpacks to complete the dial areas a bit more. I truly despise painting these guys, but I am mostly done now. Just need another squad maybe and a few more Alpha models for weapon options.
Not sure what is up next, but likely a Dunecrawler or some Ballistarii (another model I dislike building/painting).
Hopefully, the AdMech Codex hits in the next few months (weeks?!) and we get some giant point shifts and changes. Our leaderships is abysmal for people who have the fear centers of their brains removed. Our Kataphrons are overpriced and/or need more wounds. The TPD needs to be much cheaper or we need a cheaper option with upgrades to give us some flexibility. Really hoping Fulgurites and Infiltrators drop in price a bit too and that Dragoons get some AP on those weapons they have.
Just my random thoughts for the void.
Also, here is my list for Week 4 of the FLGS Escalation League. For anyone following (...that means you Solar Lion and Whalemusic360), I refused to play any 40k unless my army was painted. So... somehow I have managed that and only be a single week behind in the League!
Spoiler:
Spearhead Detachment
HQ:
Cawl
[250]
Elites:
Cybernetica Datasmith
Gamma, Power Fist
[52]
(10) Fulgurite Priests

Heavy:

Hopefully, it holds up against some Blood Angels. They have me worried because they have units that can drop in and jump over my screen, etc. Should be an interesting test.
List looks good. I've seen this played alot. The only weakness is in the hoards armies. You need to get some infiltrators to put some pressure in their back field.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out!
I wanted to try out my Priests that I spent so much effing time painting. Usually I err towards Infiltrators. I would have put them in too, but the whole Datasmith tax eats up one of my two Elite slots.
I will get some pics and let everyone (both of you) know how it goes!
Metalica marched to war! This time facing somewhat of an unconventional Blood Angels army. A bunch of Dreadnoughts and a Stormraven. We deployed on short table edges after putting down six objectives per the mission. I almost killed the Stormraven on turn one with my shooting. It did go down turn two after killing a single Fulgurite Priest. Then I spent the whole game just letting my gunline do what it does while holding two objectives. Late game my Fulgurites rushed a neaby objective. By the end of turn 4, the Blood Angels fell under the withering firepower of Forge World Metalica!
But for real, my dice were on FIRE. And it was a terrible deployment for a stompy list.
Next week (tomorrow, because I am behind) starts the 1700pt lists. So... Time to paint more stuff!!! I will probably knock out a pair of Ballistarii and/or another Dunecrawler.
Solar_lion wrote: Congrats on the win. The Mechanicus are my ususal opponent and honestly I rarely win. It's a tough gun line to crack.
Army looks great. What you need now is a wicked display board.
I have 300pt left to finish too! I am brainstorming my 2k list and I am leaning towards some Sydonian Dragoons for screening and blocking T1/T2 charge shenanigans (though I doubt I will see them). They are going to tie up units and screen and for a bargain of 68ppm, why not? Seem better than a 5-man Skitarii unit, honestly.
As for display board, I have ordered more Siflor tufts (I ran out!) and am trying to get a new print (mine broke) so I can do a proper plaque for the front. I have a "shelf" that is about a foot deep by almost 3' wide that should fit nicely on the ends of most gaming tables (provided they are 8ft tables with 6ft sections for gaming, like my FLGS has). On top will be a plethora of ruined/neglected scenery - including the servohaulers, SW:A scenery and some Imperialis stuff. The fluff being this is a world ruined when Chaos exploded out of the Eye and is being reclaimed by the Indominus Crusade. Should be a hell of a project and I will be starting that this weekend hopefully - I just need to get a piece of masonite to cut as a base for the terrain (so I am not putting it straight on the wood).
Here are some pics of my two latest additions to the Metalica army - a trio of Sydonian Dragoons and another Neutronager.
Plus, some shots of my army as it stands overall. 2000pt total, though I hope I can get some more Robots soon. Just two more probably. Maybe 3.
Next up: Display Board to match my basing. Not going to work too hard on it, mostly just to help on tourney day (8/19!). It won't be crazy, but its my first foray into display board so I am not trying to be too ambitious.
Hastily wrapped up my display board before the tournament. Didn't do great, but I did wind up with Best Painted and overall League Champion too! That was a surprise! Had a great time.
Next project already in the planning stages. I need a break from AdMech, so until they get their Codex, I will be working on Death Guard (after a bit of a break and a commission I need to wrap up).
So yea... while may Night Lords are on hiatus as we wait for the "Age of Darkness" rules for 30k, I did see something I am thinking I will do with my Primarch (maybe).
Just look at this helmet! I am magnetizing Curze's head so I can do his normal head (ugly as it is) and helmet options (was one... now maybe two!).
The major hangup would be size and fit. I would need to basically shave this to fit a suitably sized helmet (maybe a Guilliman one if I can get it).
Msolve wrote: I really like how you did the grey on your bases, did you use different colors to drybrush to make it look so diverse? Perhaps some blues in there?
Thanks!
I airbrush in my base color, then follow up with green and brown in spots. Then I drybrush to pick out the texture. I also do washes and airbrush brown inks as well. I generally do it based on what looks good and what other stuff is present on the base.
Solar_lion wrote: Lovely idea on the helmet. should go well in the NL colors.
Hope so. Just waiting for that AoD rulebook before I dive into 30k... plus, you know... those Vyronii decals.
Also, CHOICES CHOICES!
Debating on which Death Guard color scheme to do!
Leaning heavily to the Fecund Ones at the moment, just because I have done a light-color army thus far, so dark with intense weathering would be a nice change of pace.
For anyone actually keeping up with my silly P&M posts here... I have hit a serious wall. My muse vanished after the League ended and now I am left unhappy with my AdMech army (rules are awful), unsure where to go with my Death Guard (can't find a list I like), and a commission that should be quick and painless that seems daunting at the moment.
I am debating on selling my AdMech, funding an Eldar army, and going back to purchasing some stuff for my 30k projects now that the AoD rulebook will be out shortly.
Also, per the Twitch feed from last week - House Vyronii decals confirmed for 2018.... allegedly. And who knows when! Could be Q4 for all I know.
whalemusic360 wrote: That's a bummer, I really liked the the white scheme of your admech. But I do want to see your NL army come together, so at least there is that.
Metalica got the absolute worst rules in the AdMech Codex. On top of that, Guard and Eldar are looking stupidly potent - overshadowing the few things AdMech does well at all.
Just doesn't seem worth it for me to keep the army if I am never going to take it out of its cases. I might hold off on the off-chance that Fires of Cyraxus gives me some more tools, but the aesthetic difference for the 30k/40k AdMech make it less appealing than if we got proper GW support.
As for the Night Lords, I am excited. Just need to see how the revamped 7th Edition rules shake out and what FAQs/Erratas hit. I still want to do a drop pod army, but might also expand out into a Caradara Armour Claw list too, just so I can paint a slew of Night Lord vehicles.
Going to need to brush up (pun!) on my lightning effects and figure out how the heck I am going to edge highlight them given that. Most likely will try out going midtones for the edge, instead of a brighter color, so it doesn't compete with the lighting.
And I look forward to getting my Knights out there whenever those decals hit. I have a list with a Lancer, Acheron, Warden, Acastus, Styrix and a Warhound! Now that should be a blast to paint and play. Just waiting on those stupid, stupid decals.
The good part about being a collector first is that it doesn't matter what is good or bad I can see how it would be annoying for a gamer though. Paint up a nice looking bunch to play games with and they are terrible.
At least you have confirmation the decals still exist. The worry they got mothballed would have been a letdown after all this time.

Yea, I have cooled down a bit and likely will just put my AdMech under glass on display somewhere in my house. Cool models and they were an ordeal to build and paint and I would never get my money back on them anyhow.
And yea, I am going to see about getting a 3D artist to render me up that crown helm once they release too. So I can do Vyronii up right! Probably will have him to it for my Lancer though, not a generic Knight.
whalemusic360 wrote: That was in a game wasn't it? Can't remember which one at the moment. Just remember thinking "man, that would be a cool thing irl".
From a preview from Adeptus Titanicus game. I have all the FW standard Knight faceplates, but for my Lancer I want a crown to mark him out as the Warlord.
Gotta go with what grabs you. Not every person is going to dig every army. And since it is your personal army project and not a commission the worst is that you are out some money.
whalemusic360 wrote: Gotta go with what grabs you. Not every person is going to dig every army. And since it is your personal army project and not a commission the worst is that you are out some money.
Sadly, I loved the Nurgle stuff creatively, but the army didn't hook me play wise. As much as I love the hobby aspect, I play40k too. I can't invest in an army that doesn't pique my interest gaming wise.
Eldar offer a lot of what I feel like I was missing - transports, psykers, flyers, and whatnot. Should be fun and painting Mymeara will be interesting!
We will see. Right now, I am in acquisition phase and enjoying time not in my studio. I wrapped up those Team Yankee West German tanks and realize I didn't even post about it! That was my last commission for the foreseeable future, for sure. After almost 10 years, its about time I put focus on my projects exclusively.
And two sheets ordered. That should suffice for my ~7 Knights.
It won't feel real until they are in my hands, but this has been quite a wait and I can't believe I am finally about to be able to get my project going.
whalemusic360 wrote: But now you can't be "the guy that wants those decals that are never coming out".
I know... this has robbed me of my Dakka identity. Tragic, but worth it. Now I can go back to crying for Fires and being salty about AdMech as my key features.
whalemusic360 wrote: Complaining about Fires is lame. Everyone complains about that. Maybe you can complain about the new Knight not being out yet you'll be safe?
Oooh! Good call. And then once it is out, I'll hate on it for being crappy (it will be).
For those like... two people who follow. I am still in a holding pattern until I move out west. Can't really start any projects if I am moving 3000 miles in two months or so.
BUT!
Nighthaunt release is amazing - already brainstorming paint schemes and basing/board options. Probably grab them for the new AoS 2.0 and will definitely work on my Bloodbound as well, who I have HUGE plans for on a massive display board that will take quite an investment in time. Ogors are still waiting for GW to rebuild them into something.
For 40k, I am still stuck. Debating on starting my Marines again, but really... not feeling it.
Now 30k is another animal! House Vyronii will happen, as will my Night Lords. The latter will be themed to the Drop Site Massacre.
Vyronii is a harder display option. Not 100% sure, but right now I am leaning towards a ruined Legio/Knight battleground with a dead Reaver Titan as the focus - with my Lancer standing with his foot on its head. Just got to.. you know... ruin a Reaver. My favorite Titan... Ugh. It will be worth it.
Anyhow, that is my mid-2018ish update.
EDIT:
Also, did I not post pics of the finished West German commission I did? Here... this is apparently the only pic I have of them. Sorry it is garbage quality!
Well, I can never seem to stay away from Knight commissions. My Hawkshroud client is sending me four to do - a Valiant, a Castellan, and two normal Questoris ones. The big boi Knights are on a tight deadline (for Nova) and the others not so much.
Should be fun!
I will be starting them once I am settled in my new place, which is 3000 miles from my current one.

Well, never mind. Client cancelled. Damn shame!
I guess this means I will have more time to focus on my own projects.
...I did it. I obtained a Reaver Titan just to wreck for the House Vyronii display board and bases. I'm a madman. Legio Fureans bites the dust at the hands of the Godeaters and Warp Runners.
Also, on the prowl for an Imperial Bastion to use as part of an Istvaan themed display for the Night Lords, which I finally have almost entirely purchased. It will feature dead Iron Hands and Sallies, including a wrecked Sicaran battle tank. Again, I'm insane.
Lots of stuff happening, should be a rowdy end of 2018 and 2019 for my personal projects.
whalemusic360 wrote: Buying a titan for basing, bold move. Normally I wouldn't advocate it, but hopefully it was from the east.
I can't vouch for its authenticity. But I can vouch for its awesomeness as a basing material.
It really does just complete the concept though. A Cerastus Lancer with one foot on a dead Reaver head? Like, that is an image no one forgets. Or a Knight Acheron striding over the wrecked power fist of a Reaver, too. The narrative is just there.
And hopefully I got a guy who will be trading me a bastion so I can get my Drop Site Massacre board started for my Night Lords.
I ain't dead y'all, just took a long, much needed hiatus. Moved across country and am now working my way back into the hobby for the hope that when the pandemic clears, I'll be able to find some 30k and AoS players in my area.
Updates:
Acquired a Fyreslayer army!
Finished getting my Ogors up to AoS standards (after 5 years of neglect!)
Almost done buying my Vyronii stuff - two Moirax away from done!
Night Lords are almost ready - need to finalize some lists and buy a Fire Raptor and cast dead Marines; reading the new black book and going to go from Drop Site board to a Thramas board!
Airbrush is giving me a headache but a new .4 needle arrives today so that should solve my issue!
Anyhow, I'm going to post updates when I can if only to keep me motivated. Attached is a pick of me in early planning for the wrecked Reaver!
Finally an update! ... though one from a project awaiting AoS 3e rules to land.
I started a Hermdar Fyreslayer army with hopes of finally getting back into the hobby and of course it got derailed. COVID and all that plus the aforementioned issue.
Right now I'm just building models. Nothing exciting. Magmadroth is in subassemblies. Next up is 40+ HGB and some various heroes etc.
I'm going to try to post again more regularly just to see if that keeps me motivated. It has been incredibly hard to find my groove again.
