I've decided I want to push myself, but I also want to play soon, so, as slow as I paint, I'll have to shoot for tabletop quality.

Make them tabletop ready for play, and when not in play, work on improving them to your ideal level.

Hi valhalla, I've been a long time lurker on your blog and i just wanted to drop by and tell you not to worry about the lack of progress. As the proud owner of a guard army and a marine myself i know how draining it can be trying to paint all those models. I would recommend treating yourself to a special character or another model that you love. That will hopefully help inspire you when you go back to the grunts

Seriously, I don't really thin my paint, and I know that's a problem, but I'm actually not sure how to go about it. I don't use a pallet, I just dip straight from the bottle and wipe most of it off on a paper towel. It's a really soft paper towel. lol

If you keep your brush wet enough, that generally suffices for thinning many paints. Some people are way too obsessed about perfectly smooth paint. Like they are trying to make it look like plastic? Meh.

For thinning, try using some distilled water mixed with matte medium. Thin it down to milk consistency, or maybe a bit thicker. Use it to thin down the paint so it will flow smoothly, and you brush will wick it up. And spend some time re-learning to paint, because painting with thinned paint is an entirely different experience than painting with thicker paint.

Use a 3x3 ceramic tile instead of the paper towel. It's useful for mixing paint too. And easily cleaned. A drop or two of paint on the tile and then a drop of 'thinner' stir them together and paint.

Welcome back. As for the painting I'll give you the advice my friend gave me when I was struggling to paint my ultramarines. Take it one model at a time. Don't look at the big picture of just how many models you have to do. Just paint one at a time. Even if its just one model a week.

Okay, so maybe its time to paint again. I have added my two cents to a Bolter and Chainsword Imperial Fist Expansion commitment, and this is what I am pledging: to paint two tac squads a librarian and my captain by 12/15/15. Specifically these models:

Now for the purposes of the commitments, I'm not sure my first tac squad will count, since it is almost finished, but has been sitting for almost a month, if not more, not painting itself. IF that is the case, then the commitment will be to paint one tac squad, the libby and the captain.

Yay! Making a vow on the B&C forums to add to my IF has worked. I started painting again. So far, I've added some red to some guns. Three more figs to go for the initial red basecoat, then I'll put the brighter red over that tomorrow. Then I can touch up the black and metal colors on the guns, then glaze the red, and wash the metal. Oh, and the various skulls and eagles.

But getting dust off models is hard. I scrubbed with an old toothbrush and that dust just seems to be attached to the minis. I even broke off the banner on my sergeant. I glued it back on, hope it stays.

If I'm building an Ironclad dreadnought, and plan to drop pod him in, should I build him with a DCCW and Seismic Hammer, and two flamers, or Hurricane Bolter and Seismic Hammer, and melta and flamer?

I'm def using the seismic hammer, because I just ordered the eagle head battering ram one from FW.

Hm. I would recommend the hurricane bolter, I personally have had decent success with that loadout. That way he can soften up potential targets before he gets in flamer/charge range

This is slow-going for me. But the end result is worth it. I'm going to paint my captain next. He's cool, so maybe I can keep the momentum going. I still have to put gloss on them, then put decals on them, then dullcote and put static grass on.

Thanks! I saw this in the Sentinels of Terra book. This was some specific character whose name escapes me now, but he was called a "Sternhelm." I haven't seen any other mention of this anywhere, but I like it better than the vet sergeants helmets being red, so I decided any vet sarge I have is going to be a Sternhelm and sport the black and white scheme.

Decals are a pain in the ass. Even with the Micro Set, they don't go on smooth, and still have raised edges. I'm letting them dry now, and will use the Micro Sol on them after, but right now, the only ones that look half-way decent are the ones that were on a flat surface, or the 4 I put two notches into, so the decal could conform to the shoulder pad better.

I wish I had just spent the extra money on the molded shoulder pads.

Yep. Decals are aggravating. It's honestly worth the money to just buy the pads with the insignia sculpted on. Saved me a headache when I was working on my marines

I used some really old 40K waterslide transfers, plus a sheet of the new Forgeworld ones. I'm using the Imperial Fist symbol, so they're round, and having a hard time wrapping around the shoulder pad.

The ones that worked though look really good. So maybe I'll just keep trying until they all look decent

The tactical arrow decals went on much nicer. They didn't take long at all. I had to scrape off one of the fist symbols, and touch up another with paint, but got them looking better too. About three of them I'm just leaving as-is. There are a couple tiny place where the decal folded on itself and sticks up, but they're barely noticeable. I went over them again with Micro Sol, but that makes like the fifth time I've done that so I don't hold out any hope they'll be perfectly smooth. I wasted a bunch of decals though, so I'll be ordering another FW set. I didn't notice either, that the regular GW decals sheet doesn't have the tactical arrows in black, and the FW one only has ten of them. It does have a few other that look slightly different, so I may use them, and may just go ahead and order one more set anyway. By the end of the night, I should be 'ardcoating the shoulder pads, and matte spraying tomorrow, then applying static grass and be done with my first squad.

Then I want to assemble my dreadnought with the FW seismic hammer, which did not have instructions with it, and I hope it's easy to infer from the regular ironclad instructions. I need it for Sunday.

I know I post a lot of WIP photos to show how I'm progressing. A lot of that is to make sure I have a handle on what I'm doing and where I'm at, and maybe motivate me to keep going. I finally finished something though, and I'm very proud of them. This is my first ever, finished, squad of Imperial Fist tactical marines. I realized after I took these photos that I did not put any squad markings or numerals on them, and part of that is the decals don't have numbers small enough to put on there. And since I've put the grass on, I'm not sure I can go back now and do more decals, if I did have them. After thinking about it though, I may just leave them off.

Power fist gives it some more cc punch, and if you throw a flamer on that fist you can do some damage prior to combat. Hurricane bolter has been hit or miss for me

Post by: Valhalla130

I have a question about ironclads. Say I have one with a power fist and a seismic hammer. The profile of the seismic hammer and the power fist say they are unwieldy, meaning they normally go at initiative 1. Right?

Does that hold true for dreadnoughts as well? I would think they of all unit types would be able to wield something that big with no penalty. Does that mean my ironclad is destined to always go last in HtH? Or does he go at the listed initiative of 4?

And if he has that combo, does he get an extra attack in assault, since he has two melee weapons, or the base 4 because they're both unwieldy?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
EDIT: Never mind. I just found the relevant part under walkers on pg 90 of the rule book. If it has two melee weapons, then it has an extra attack. And under the Unwieldy USR, it says models attack at Init 1, unless they are a monstrous creature or walker. So... I answered my own question.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I do have another question, and I cannot find the answer on the web to save my life.

I'm trying to assemble the Forge World seismic hammer arm, and I want to put a heavy flamer on it, but there does not appear to be a place to attach it. I guess I could run it "counts as" but that doesn't sit well with me.

And FW didn't include any assembly instructions on this one. And I'm not even sure how their meltagun goes on this thing.

The most awesome moment of our game last weekend was the Ironclad dreadnought and the soul grinder getting into close combat, both rearing back and letting fly, and blowing each other up at the same time. Two with one blow!

That and my lascannon dev squad rolling this on the only turn they were at full strength:

Another game today with alabamaheretic's Khorne demonkin army. He won by one measly point. My dice continued to be mad at me for some reason. I rolled the Warlord trait where all my models had my warlord's Ld. So, a 10. Of course, the first time I need to roll a Ld check, I roll this (two 6's):

I had a squad of bikes with two meltas and a combi-melta and an attack bike with multimelta, two tac squads with HB's and a grav gun and melta gun (which seem to be too short ranged to do much good before I get assaulted,) a dev squad with 4 lascannons and a Razorback with TL LC, an attack bike squad with 2 attack bikes, a scout squad with a HB, a captain with artificer armor, PF and PP, and a chaplain with terminator armor. Oh, and an ironclad dread, and 5 man Legion of the Damned squad with PP and meltagun. My bike squad, chaplain, two combat squadded tac squads with the assault weapons, and my captain and scout squad were on my left flank, and my dev squad, attack bike squad and two combat squadded tac squads with the HB'/s were on my right flank.

He had two hellbrutes, one with TL LC, and one with MM. He had two berserker squads, a squad of 18 cultists, a raptor squad, 3 strong bike squad and a terminator squad. Some highlights, my dev squad, on top of a very tall building, shooting down, over the cultists and blowing up the TL LC hellbrute on turn one, only for him to remember he got a "cover save" for the cultists in front of it, after my turn was over. We're usually pretty lenient about that kind of thing, but I was a little upset at having such an awesome moment taken away from me. Not to mention, the cultists couldn't have "realistically" given a cover save unless they leapt up 20 feet in the air to get in the way of those lasbolts. It's not his fault the game doesn't address height, but dang, that rankles. So I devoted all the fire that hurt it to taking out that hellbrute and got it on the second turn by whittling away its hull points.

My right flank pretty much disintegrated, but I took out his left flank, and was wheeling my bike squad, my chaplain, my captain, and my two combat squads of tac marines over to move right and take on one of his berserker squads, and his bikes when the game ended and he had 7 tactical objectives and points to my 6.

It was a close fought battle, and went back and forth several times. At one point, I charged his berserker squad on my right with one lone tac marine, he challenged me with his sergeant, and the tac marine killed his sergeant. After he was killed, the other small 5 man tac squad was shredded, and he summoned a bloodletter unit, and the last tac marine on my right was faced with this:

The LotD didn't do much. The occupied a berserker squad and kept them out of the main fight for two turns until the game ended. But they died. So they definitely don't need to get into close combat in the future.

Okay, Alabamaheretic has been trying to help get me motivated. We're going to paint 600 points of Guard, since he's rebuilding his army after losing his Vostroyans in a car crash. So he's doing Mordians now, and I'm going back to the Valhallans.

After building a list, I realized I only have to paint 16 models to complete the 600 points. Realizing that felt really good and motivating. I only need to paint the Commander Chenkov model, a lieutenant, 2 grenade launchers, 1 or 2 voxcasters, 2 commissars, 3 missiles launcher teams (so 6 models) and 2 scout sentinels.

That's not bad. Only real issue is I'm missing a missile launcher team. I could sub something else, but I've been meaning to buy one more for a while, and this would be the time, but eBay has none available.

Anybody have any suggestions or know someone trying to get rid of one?

Edit: and my list:
Spoiler:
company command squad with carapace armor, bolt gun, Vox-caster, 2 grenade launchers, regimental standard
2 Commissars
Platoon command squad with vox-caster, Autocannon, flamer
Infantry squad with vox-caster, Autocannon, flamer

2 heavy weapon squads with 3 missile launcher teams each
Scouts sentinel with flamer
Scouts sentinel with multilaser

Seems like an decent list to me, but if you're planning on doing combined squads with your infantry squads then the vox casters on one of the units would be redundant

I had to rejigger my list. I put it into Army Builder and it turns out I didn't have two troop choices. So I dropped one of the heavy weapons teams, took carapace armor off the command squad, added in a vet squad with Chimera and it's 596 points.

Oooh! pretty!
Funny, I always start with black prime but in this case white only makes sense (would be cool to use the watercolour type method of painting).
I think I would use grey and build up / down from there only because of my preference.

I always had a liking for guard that are from some death-world or at least difficult to live places.
I could see them saying "I like explosions near me, they keep me warm!".

Officers can only issue an order to a unit on foot within 12" of them, and a voxcaster just lets you reroll it if it fails?

I have given in to the inevitable, and paid someone to paint some of my minis. He used to work for GW, and one of his figures was on a WD cover.

While painting relaxes me, I have been plagued by health problems which keep me from sitting down for long periods of time.

He didn't charge much, which is the only reason I could afford it, and I do need to correct a couple things, but he did a great job. So far, it's only 25 of my Valhallans, but he'll be doing more. I'll have pictures when I get these finished and based. I plan to concentrate on my Imperial Fists while he helps with these.

I have a very messy process, which I constantly refine, or just mismanagement the steps of. Usually, I start by priming white, then air brushing Averland Sunset on as a basecoat. Then I wash in Devlin Mud or now Nuln Oil.

Then I dry brush on more Averland Sunset to bring it back, and avoid the recesses.

Then I apply a second dry brush of Averland Sunset. After that, I do the same with Yriel Yellow, then wash in Lamenters Glaze.

After that, I start going to town on the details.

Also, any advice on how to paint my drop pods in the future? Specifically, those vanes, where I've seen them painted a different color to offset them, such as dark grey or black or even red for the 3rd company. I'm not sure they look good painted red.

So far, all of my tactical marines use black tactical arrow transfers. Since there are only twenty on the FW transfer sheet that are black, and the GW space marine transfer sheet doesn't have any at all, I've run out. I don't want to spend $25 for another FW sheet.

So this is my plan, there are some on the FW sheet that ate white, but outlined in black. I was going to paint them in, and hope I'm steady enough not to screw it up.

However, looking at them, as they are now, they don't look bad. The only reason to paint them black is maintain uniformity with the first two squads. What do you think?

Spoiler:

And just like that, 3rd squad is done. I think I'm going to keep this Tac squad train going. At this rate, it won't be long before I finish them all. Oh, the flamer I finished in the last batch belongs with this squad. And he's ultimately why I decided to paint the tac arrows black.

It's been a long two days, but during it, I managed to find time to strip four 3rd edition tac marines, rebuild them slightly where shoulder pads came off and an arm and bolter were missing, and convert one into holding a missile launcher, so I can round out my Tac squads.

Then I primed them today, broke out the airbrush and basecoated them and ten Mk III marines, 3 Centurions and an ironclad dreadnought. Then took a brush and shaded them to within an inch of their life in Nuln Oil.

Over the next few weekends, I'll paint two more tactical squads (giving me a total of 5,) and the centurions and the dread.

I still need to purchase a dread or two, and some Rhinos, to round out my company. Turns out I have plenty of assault marines and devastators.

My fourth squad is finally done. As of now, I am almost back up to what I had painted before I decided to strip everything and repaint them as IF. I'm ten scouts short of that. I do have some thing I didn't have before, like the terminators and the one bike.

I tried something new on this squad. I tried to add some areas where it looked liked shells might have bounced off, knocking paint off. I kinda like it, and I don't really want them to look really weathered, so I think this is enough for me. Oh, and I also used some Bolter and Chainsword transfers for my black tactical arrows. They worked okay, not as good as the FW decals, but definitely better than buying another $25 sheet.

Next up is my ironclad dreadnought. I need a good name for him.

I mentioned to someone once how I paint my IF, with a Nuln Oil wash over the basecoat, and they were aghast that I would do that. Here is a before and after pic. On the right is a primed, basecoated model washed in Nuln Oil and on the left is one I've done that with, then gone over it carefully with Averland Sunset again. Hopefully, it shows the contrast where the armor plates show up better with the darker lines between them.

Working on my last tactical squad. This will be 60 line troopers completed, along with captain, chaplain, 3 librarians, dread, and one bike. Not sure what I'll do next, but probably devastators. They've been waiting a long time.

Spoiler:

I tried a checker pattern on the sergeants sword. Not sure how I feel about it.

I've done quite a bit, but realized when I switched to Imgur that it wasn't resizing my photos like Photobucket used to. So these last couple of pages are probably awful, with gigantic pictures. I stopped posting pictures until I could figure it out.

I just realized I could use Dakka, especially since I already have a gallery. So here are a couple of things I've done in the last few weeks, and I'll post more later.

My non-Primaris lieutenant...

My company champion...

New company photo. It shows all the tactical done, plus most of my characters. Still feels like I'm only half done, and i bought the Primaris half of the Dark Millenium box today.

Grrrrr..... Finecast.

Just opened Lysander, began snipping stuff off the sprue carefully, and banner pole broke while snipping a gate next to it.

Edit: I drilled thru the center of a pole.

It's a very short pole, but still... I drilled thru a pole. Somehow, I repaired this banner pole and pinned it to Lysander's top. And pinned him to the base.

The Fists are looking good Valhalla. I've been very slowly grinding through my Ultramarines, trying to get them all done before I even consider looking into a new project. Just getting a bit burnt out on them after all this time

So I spent a while not painting. I did manage to get my home area set up again with all the paints I use most arranged in order in the nail polish rack.

Unfortunately, at home, I have to spend a lot of time keeping my mother company. She still doesn't do well alone since my dad died three and a half years ago. But last week, I tried to get started on Lysander and finish the three characters I had been working on. I put transfers on them, glossed and applied dullcote to them. I'm almost done with their bases. Just grass tufts to go.

I also received my Sotar 20/20 in the mail a few weeks ago from Badger and practised a little bit on Lysander with it and was able to get base coats of yellow and red on the model without too much overspray That is pretty cool.

Pics on the champion, lieutenant and Imperial Space Marine to follow when they're complete, but here is a couple shots of the progress on Lysander.

Lysander's body is done, working on his arms now. This is the first time I've painted something in pieces and it's driving me crazy. I want him together now.

I'm wondering if I should have drilled holes for pins for his arms first?

Edit: I want to finish him so I can start on the Primaris marines.

Honestly I've never tried painting a model in pieces before. I'd say it's fine to have not drilled the holes for pins first, but I've honestly never pinned a model either, so I don't know how that would have affected it.

Also, I guess im going to put together a Deathwatch force. They're another facet of the 40k universe I've loved since the beginning, before they ever had models.

All this talk of a new codex, seeing the new upgrade sprue, and the Deathwatch Watch Master with the halberd, and seeing what's in the Getting Started box got me thinking.

A few years ago, i painted an IF representative for a Penny Arcade 40k thread collective effort. A poster there was putting together a DW force using the GK rules at the time. Lots of us painted one or two models each and it was fun and made for lots of laughs. But the army ended up getting donated at Nova Open for charity after getting a best painted award.

I already have the DW models from the Deathwatch Overkill box and ive always wanted to paint them. I figure getting some Primaris, the GS box and those will gibe me a small flexible force. Already preordered the codex and paid for it, so I'll see what else I'll need then.

I love how those Legion of the Damned came out, really nicely done. And Deathwatch are looking like they'll shape up to be a fairly solid army, special issue ammunition plus Primaris are a solid combo I think

Thanks!

I couldn't agree more on Primaris Deathwatch. I'm already pricing shoulder pads at Pop Goes the Monkey, and I've totalled up almost $75 on 5 sets to get the 11 or so chapters i want in my DW force.

Since I last posted, I've purchased most of a Deathwatch army, spent more on the shoulder pads, and completely lost interest for months.

I've spent the last few weeks playing Red Dead Redemption II, and thinking about the hobby, bemoaning that I never wanted to paint anything again.

Last week, I gave thought to trading in my Valhallans for store credit, realized how little I would get, made a Facebook post, and now I have someone interested in buying the whole thing. I struggled with the thought of selling my first true love, but the more I thought about, the more right it seemed. Especially since I was getting excited to paint something... my Imperial Fists.

That right there let me know I was doing the right thing. It doesn't hurt that the person buying it is an amazing painter, is excited about painting it, and has his own painting business, so I'll get to see lots of pics. This will be his personal project, and I feel it is going to a good home.

But it did get me to thinking about where I want to take the Fists. I think I may put the chapter on hold for now, and go ahead and get the army in a playable state. That means working on building the Primaris I want to add, and buying the last three things I want for the army.

So I have almost all the Primaris built, from my Dark Imperium set. I just need the Inceptors to get built. These are really awesome models. I can't wait to slap some paint on them.

Things are going slow, but they are going.

I've been building a bunch of stuff. Mostly the Primaris part of my newest army list. 5 Intercessors, 5 Hellblasters, a captain in Gravis armor and a Primaris Lieutenant and 5 Reivers with grav chutes. I built a razorback with twin-linked assault cannons and a Whirlwind. Now I'm building a Redemptor. Those feet are difficult to get posituoned correctly.

I've purchased everything I think I need, barring future changes to the list. Its actually the first time ever that I have bought every model for a list I've planned out. Now I've started buying terrain.

I got my first two boxes today. The Sector Imperialis Ruins and the Promethium Relay Pipes. The FLGS had the pipes and I know they're discontinued, so I went ahead and got them.

For anyone still following this, I've been painting lots of yellow on Primaros marines. I haven't quite finished getting the yellow right on all the models, and I cannot figure out a list to save my life, but I got bored and went ahead and finished my standard bearer. I still need to apply decals, and some Nurgle's Rot to the base, and I'll post pics later tonight.

Its been a while, and I don't have anything to really post, but an update. I've primed, washed and basecoated all of the Dark Imperium and Shadowspear marines and a few other things, like Aggressors. And then played a few games with various configurations and got my butt handed to me, to the point where it was just no fun playing them. I may just wait until the new SM codex to try them again. I'll probably come back to paint them at some point, but for right now, I've lost interest.

And I've really come to regret selling my Valhallans. After realizing I had fashioned my online persona after them, even writing short stories about them back in 98 or so. I began to think about how to build a new army, and realized quickly it would be almost impossible with my budget limitations. Each individual model is selling for almost what a squad sold for from GW when they discontinued them.

I looked at Victoria Miniatures and Anvil Industries. Both have very good offerings, and if I were to do it cold now, I would probably choose one of those companies to build my army.

However, in posting about it to the Independent Characters FB page and their patreon discord channel, the guy I sold my army to noticed I was regretting my sale, and he contacted me about selling my army back to me. For the same price he bought it for.from me. I was floored that he was willing to do this. he explained he hasn't had time to do anything with the army, and he had sold things before that he then regretted so he was willing to help me out.

So now I'm just waiting to save up the money to send to him. I am beyond ecstatic. And I'm finally going to learn weathering, and how to build scenic looking bases. I want my heavy weapons peeking over ruined walls and snow and mud everywhere. I've bought the stuff to do oil pinwashing. This is going to push me to learn new things, but it will finally be the army I've always wanted.
