Hey all! The rumors of this thread's death are greatly exaggerated. Life has gotten in the way of progress, but alas! things are back on track. I actually have quite a bit of progress to report, hopefully I can get them all up of the next week. (Over fifty pictures worth!)
Also, thanks for all the kind words!
UPDATE!
First up, I started sculpting the side panels.
Once I got them smooth, I primed 'em.
Next, I smoothed the base for the glyph plates and drew out the glyphs.
followed by sculpting up the glyphs.
While I had the primer out, I hit the evil sun logo.
More updates to come very soon! All comments and criticisms are welcome.

Thanks everyone! I'm gonna try and update every day this week, and get through my backlog of pictures!
I got the jaw glyph plates done. I start with the bare plates.
I then sculpt on the glyphs.
A little filing, sanding, and primer comes next.
YAY! the finished jaw. (and a small part of the horns, more on that later)
Lastly, I tape it up for the second base coat.
That brings the jaw up to the final paint job. Up next: Horns! or, how I learned that fiberglass and Bondo kick butt together!

I have plans for the usual side mounted machine guns and possibly a grot tailgunner. I'm trying to make a working bike first though, so all Dakka will come at the very end. I wanna ride it first!
xXWeaponPrimeXx wrote:I seriously love this, but I have a question about all the clay work. What do you use to keep it from coming off?
It's a two-part epoxy clay, it will stick to anything. (seriously, I use to sculpt directly onto glass.) The brand I use is Magic Sculpt.
Lone Cat wrote:Anvildude wrote:

The bike is actually (mostly) painted, I'm trying to catch up my updates. I may rust some areas later, but for now it has no rust. I'm hedging the line of style choice between "Ork warbike" and "rat bike." The compromise I came up with is "poorly painted miniature." This keeps it in the Warhamms vein, and also stays true to the rattle-can style a proppa rat bike should be painted in. I dunno, I forsee me changing it quite a lot as time goes on.
And yes, from the way they are sculpted on the miniatures, I have always assumed most glyph plates are metal.
UPDATE TIME!
Here is the front bits. you will notice the horns in different stages, ill cover them in the next update.
To start with, I bevel the edges of the teeth and add texture.
Next I clean up and round at the metal on the skull.
After that, I clamp down the teeth (and other plastic bits) and drill/bolt them into place.
Done and done.
Next I prime and paint the base color.
Lastly I tape it off for the second base color.
Now it's ready for paint. up next: horns!

I kinda wonder if it wouldn't have been easier, faster, and maybe better to have just gone online and ordered up a pair of cattle horns. Probably not cheaper, though- a quick search suggests that they go for around 100 bucks for a pre-prepped pair. dunno. Maybe if you have a local slaughterhouse or something...
They'd be hollow, so you'd still be able to run the wiring through them pretty easily.
Loving the face, though.

I'm in Louisiana, so finding horns is no issue. I did actually try that at first, the problem was I needed them to be a pretty specific length, and have the right diameter at both ends of the horns. after trying to make a few fit, I gave up and just built them.
Trapthem wrote:So insane / good. Actual keen to see what the po-po say when out and about with a grot tailgunner haha
I'm not too worried about it, I've talked to several rat bike and rat rod owners. It will be interesting when/if I get pulled over.
UPDATE!
I started the horns with bent conduit, then skinned it with sticky foam and gaff tape. Once I had the rough shape I wanted, I applied two layers of fiberglass.
Once that was done I sculpted up the back of the horns and filled gaps/added detail.
Next I skinned the horns with bondo.
I then sanded and carved in the surface detail.
The bits that lead into the turn signals were too thick, so I started the horn tips by carving them down quite a lot.
Lastly, I sculpted up the "metal" tips that hold the turn signals.
Up next: PAINT!

I had originally started the build thread at www.sewsew.com, a knitting forum. (I posted it in the crochet sub-forum.) They sent me here, so I'm not sure where to take the thread from here.
Suggestions of a more appropriate forum would be greatly appreciated! (Who knew a website called "DAKKADAKKA" Was the wrong place for an Ork warbike?!?)
Deunstephe wrote:This is coming along astoundingly. Can we hope to see a few pics of it all together soon?
Very soon. I just need to get through my backlog of pictures. I should be caught up by the end of the day on monday.
Redjaw wrote:I'd dare you to try and show that at a Warhammer costume party, but I'm not sure if you've got an Ork costume. If you do, or you can hire one, I'd LOVE to see pics of that!
I do have plans for an Ork cosplay, sadly I wont be able to drive the bike while wearing it!
I'm making a Burna Mek based loosely off this pic.
UPDATE!
I finished up the build for the back half. first up I made the banner pole.
Next I finished the splash guard on the rear.
Next I welded on some pad eyes.
After that, I pulled off all the little bits and the rear frame for painting.
Lastly, I clear off the old markings on the ammo cans, and start adding proppa warhammer markings.
Thats it for tonight! I should have two more updates over the next few days. I also wanted to say I really appreciate all the comments, they keep me going. I tend to only comment on questions, but I do appreciate compliments!

If you are going to do some alphanumeric code, it might be fun to call out some game terms. Like autocannon rounds being marked S7AP4H2. I'm not sure if you were going for that, but if you did the formatting was not one I was familer with.
Awesome stuff as always.

That would have been great! I love the stat idea, I may use it on the smaller ammo cans. I actually just based it off of made-up Armageddon markings, as my Ork army is from there.
The code I used is as follows:
A47SL-----------Armageddon sector, 47th regiment, Steel legion
CP-M36---------Charge pack, Mark 36 (the type of lasgun the Steel Legion uses)
998.M41--------Start date of the third war of Armageddon
I assume my KoS stole the lasgun ammo cans. I'll age and add Ork markings later.

I will have plenty of good shots of the bike, trust me!

I start by throwing on the bits.
I also got a shiny new fuel filter!
I then finished the afore mentioned saddle bags.
I also cut out an imperial eagle.
I should have another update soon. I was hoping to have more by now, but my internet is crappin' out.

If you can, I'd get my hands on some fire-retardant cloth and tie little rags of it all over the exhaust pipes later- that and baling wire, to make it look like they're held together (and honestly, to hold them together better) just by those. Maybe prevent some rattling eventually.

Is there something you can do to the exhaust system to make it billow clouds of thick black smoke? Or do you think the authorities might have a problem with that on the road? Also, is there an upper limit to how loud a bike can be?
43588
Post by: Anpu-adom
Stunt airplanes (and crop sprayers) use smoker oil injected into the exhaust pipes just after the engine to produce that white smoke. All you need is a little oil pump, tank, and injector. The type of oil you use will determine the smoke produced. Oils without oxygen in the structure (like motor oil) will produce black smoke.

I may add some fire-retardent cloth (like panther felt or cut-up weld pads) later, but that would be more for the pipes being so exposed. I want the bike to be very interactive, I'm worried about people bumping into them and getting burned more then the rattle. It's actually quite solid, the build was designed to only look rickety.
Nevelon wrote:Is there something you can do to the exhaust system to make it billow clouds of thick black smoke? Or do you think the authorities might have a problem with that on the road? Also, is there an upper limit to how loud a bike can be?
Now your talking! I can easily rig up a black or white smoker, I actually work in FX for my day job. It wouldn't be an engine or exhaust mod, it would be something like the guy below said, modifying it for either black or white. And yes, there is an upper limit to pipe sounds, both legally and being a good neighbor! Right now my bike is EXTREMELY loud, almost (but not quite!( as loud as a big dog. More on me being quite in this update!
Anpu-adom wrote:Stunt airplanes (and crop sprayers) use smoker oil injected into the exhaust pipes just after the engine to produce that white smoke. Thats sounds about right, I figure I'll build a mineral oil smoker that uses the exhaust pipe heat, or just make a separate "cracker" that uses an air tank. I'll look into the smoker oil builds, we use a lot of those for outdoor but the ones we use are usually white smoke.
UPDATE!
I started throwing more stuff on the bike!
bags
seat
banner pole
Gob
silly chrome skull rear views and bar-end rear views
Lastly, I did fire it up, it WORKS!!! sadly, it sounds like a Gargant farting, its so Gorking loud. I threw on the Super traps, much better but still loud. I adjusted the idle, tuned down the carb jets, and ordered Super trap mini-mufflers. Hopefully I can get the sound to a decent level, the Levee police are brutal about pipe sounds. The best part is I'm sure I can get it to a respectable level, and then for shows or going down into the bayou I can throw on the rain caps for maximum pipe blasting.
Thanks for looking! At this point most of the parts are on, although the final aging/weathering is yet to come. I'll get some good distance pictures, if theres any angle you would like to see let me know and ill snap a quick photo for you and throw it into the next update. Right now I'm about a week into the wiring, easily the absolute hardest part so far.
seriously, wiring sucks.

It's 'cause the Fluff specifies gouts of black oily smoke, is all. Besides- Orks do know how to take care of mechanics, and do keep their machinery in good working order- after all, a working engine is a fasta engine! They just don't worry about all those petty little 'safety' things.

I've been thinking a lot about an Ork Trukk, but my next big project is not warhamm related, gonna make a coffin/hello kitty rat rod for the wife so she can ride with me. (she doesn't like motorcycles.)
As for a miniature of the bike, that would be cool! I'm ashamed to admit it, but alas, I have no bikes in my current Ork army. I should build some I suppose since this bike is basically my tournament troop transport.

You are right! I'm working on correcting that problem as we speak. I had plans for the dog dish, but I tossed it when I finished the carb tune up and switched to the K&M filters. (which go right on the carbs, instead of throught the dog dish air filter.)

I finished wiring the beast. Let me tell you, it was by far the hardest thing on the bike to date. every single step was like pulling teeth, I had to learn quite a bit about electronics to make everything I wanted to work. I don't recommend ANYONE re-wire a bike unless you have a ton of patience. (along with google, your bike reference materiel, and at least one guy that kinda knows what goes where!)
First up, I find that I had a loose ground, and it had melted half the ground wires throughout the ENTIRE harness. here's the culprit pulled free, keep in mind I did nothing to it but pull it out of the harness. I then had to replace it, this loose ground from years ago would haunt the entire re-wiring process.
Next Up, I hooked up all the wires for both my light regulator and my new speedo cluster, along with all the new lights. (four turn signals and a headlight.)
Satisfied that I had wired up everything correctly, I then tried to test it. Nothing worked. Nothing. I then fought this stupid harness for the next EIGHT DAYS, consulting everything from bikers and builders I knew, online forums, and you tube video.
Who knew Chavs from jolly england knew so much about bikes! I learned almost everything I needed to know from horrible, glaring green neon lettering on websites dedicated to making street bikes into street fighters. It's hard to decipher the ancient internet lingo of L33T speak mixed with Electronic jargon along with what I assume is english street slang, but thats how they write it so I managed to get out what I needed to know. (I don't know english culture that well, I hope Chav isn't a slur. someone let me know.)
After days of fighting, I got everything to work, and tidied up my wiring.
Once that was all done, I could finally tune the bike! hardest part was making sure the jets were adjusted correctly, and that the carburetors were synchronized.
I love that my carburetor synchronizer is right out of the Adam West bat cave!
I also had to pull out some bits that were no longer needed. (At least I hope so!)
Lastly, completely un-related to this update, I realized I neglected to post a pic of my silly rear view mirrors. (I only showed them from the rider perspective.)
OK! so bike is fully street-legal now, just not water proof. It's storming bad here, so I'll need to wait to test drive it when the weather clears. In the mean time I'll be working on the toy lights, cutting up cow-hide to make it water proof, and sculpting up the last bits. I need to have it ready to age by friday, so I should have updates soon. (the Art dept. thats helping me to age is it leaving in two weeks, so I'm under a time crunch!)
Again, thank you all for the kind words!

Oh good Gork, the days of L33T speak. The horror! Sorry you had to go through that, but you've got a working bike now! And Chav isn't a slur really, it's slang for teenage english gangster imitators.
Keep it up!

One of the most mightily impressive things I have ever seen and whilst it's been said many times already, this bike is awesome! I was never good at electronics so muddling your way through that and managing to get on top is very impressive to me, I wouldn't even know where to begin. Once the shootas go on, this won't pose any problems for you whilst your cycling around will it?
As for chav well, you could also use words like, lout and yob and chav would be close to them but encompassing a look and semi-culture among a minority of generally low-income, council estate residents (I believe in America you might use the term The Projects where we have Council Estates). Of course all sorts of people can exhibit 'chavvy' behaviour but it is a stereotyped term.

I vote a buggy with a water cannon on the back to count as a Scorcher

Anti-Skorcha! Bonus points if you manage to get an actual Monitor nozzle from a hose engine, and a big, tow-along tank so that it can actually function as a giant fire extinguisher. Paint it fire-engine red and donate it to your local fire department!

I was reading through the thread, intrigued, and then you painted imperial markings on the amo boxes and I burst out laughing. The best ork bike ever wouldn't be komplete without some looted imperial metal boxes!
This project is AMAZING! Looks great so far! I can't wait to see how you do the dakkaguns.

Sadly, it is a one seater. should that SOB wish to ride it, she simply needs a motorcycle endorsement and a prayer to the Emperor! And by-the-by, y'all look amazing

good to know I didn't insult anyone! As for the guns, they're not gonna really be for driving long distances, just short rides in parking lots and what nots.

I have a few ideas for some more fun large projects, nothing concrete though. The next few probably wont be warhammer related, I wanna make a coffin/hello kitty rat-rod for the wife, and my next bike is gonna be a WLA basket-case rebuild. Exciting stuff, just not remotely hobby related. Also, I feel dumb, I never noticed comments on pictures! at least I don't remember at any rate. I'll respond to them, it seems the criticism is more in the individual pics!

If you cant loot yer' favorite enemies gak, what CAN ya' loot?!?
UPDATE!
First off, I really hate you jerks for making me paint it proppa'. I wound up pulling all the chrome I could, painting it, and then re-assembling. it was an extra week, but worth it in the end. (except the part where I almost totaled the bike and had to re-build the engine. more on that later!)
First up, the chains that hold on the ammo cans.
up next, I realize I cant really paint the bike while its assembled, so I take apart the bike.
I then remove most of the chrome, scuff up the surface, prime, and paint with the correct temperature paint.
I sculpt up some more bits.
Then I paint them too!
Next, I turn my attention to the bike.
I start blackening it and throwing parts back on.
Much better and much improved!
I still need to waterproof the electronics and air filters. My first attempt was to use cow hide.
Not sure it fits with the aging, ill post a shot once I get to that. Anyways, thats what I got for this update.
COMING UP NEXT!
I only have an oil change and some bolts left to replace, I manage to crack the filter cover, strip the exhaust bolt going into the head, and blow every fuse on the bike at once!
Also it gets beautifully aged. As always, questions, comments, and suggestions are welcome.

So just as I was done changing the oil and replacing the exhaust gaskets, I mis-used my torque wrench and tore the bolt off going into the header. I then welded a nut onto it so I could get the bolt out, and forgot to disconnect the battery resulting in every fuse on the bike being blown.
I may have then used some bad words. All's well that ends well though, everything is fine and fixed.
UPDATE!
I bring the (mostly) finished bike over to a painter friend, she is an expert ager.
While cecile starts aging the bike, I drybrush the cables
I throw on some last minute spikes to the fork covers.
She starts with taking down the paint here and there
Then begins washing out the color and adding sun fades
In between coats she knocked out the saddle bags. My jaw hit the floor, they look so good. This is how I want the entire bike to look!
Up next: the bike becomes a rusted heap

I'm still working out the bugs, but I will have video for sure once I can get a shoot set up.

I wasn't planning on having it so aged, but once I saw the ammo cans I told her to have at it. I really like the "pulled out a swamp" look.
Lastly, I'm not sure what I would do with one internet, much less 100. can I just get a gift card instead?
UPDATE TIME!
I have a ton of aging photos. some of them are in-progress shots.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
Automatically Appended Next Post: Once the aging was done, I took it out on several cautious test drives. First up the headlight was too close to the front wheel, so I raised it up quite a bit. Second, the Iron gob on the front was too bouncy, so I shored it up with a few bars of angle iron. Lastly I finished the cow hide as to water proof it better. I also took the aging down a hair, some of the Ork markings were too obscured. I also Added the Ork mouth to the right side.
These are the final pictures for now. I still need to add all the lights, toggle switches, dakka cannons, banner, and grot tail gunner. I'm done for a while though, gonna enjoy riding it for a bit. I've already put 120 miles on it. It gets quite the reaction cruising around!
Thas it for a while, I'll answer any questions y'all might have, and of course any other comments and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for looking!

Thanks everyone for the kind words! As I said before the project is not completely done, just the "I can ride around now" phase is completed. I have plans to add a grot tail gunner, and yes, MORE DAKKA! I'm enjoying my new codex and playing again, along with getting bike rides in with my buddies. I will start building again in a month or so.
I really appreciate all the responses, I'm just gonna answer a few questions.

Yes.

This seems to be the general sentiment amongst warhamm players, whilst rat bikers seem to like it. Most importantly I like it, so for now it stays rusty!
Theophony wrote:Now you need a looted space marine helmet to wear on it
The banner pole is removable, I'm asking around Cosplayers if anyone has spare helmets from a bad cast or earlier designs so I can make a trophy rack. Anyone on here have extra or old helmets?
Anvildude wrote:Needs another lick of red paint. You should just slap some on there now over the rust and stuff.

It's the reverse, I just clean off the rust mixture to expose more red. I get a lot of responses, I love when kids freak out, then I honk the clown horn and they start giggling.
