Yeah I will share it in whatever state it is in when it arrives. The purchase of it however means my next buntai after the Samurai will probably be Wako/bandits rather than the Sohei.
As Wako pirates raiding a costal village sounds fun to me.
It should look something like one of these
obviously as a wargaming piece it is likely to be smaller and less detailed.

Regardless, looking forward to it
Slippery slope it surely is.
Cannons I shouldn't really need to buy for this one. Japanese boats were often prone to capsizing and not built well enough to take a gak ton of cannon fire they usually had a few but not the 50's. Their method more commonly tended to be to fire volleys of shots from arquebus at enemy ships. Which is probably why the Koreans wrecked them in naval battles. They did some really high caliber arquebus too they didn't just use the normal ones. The Japanese seemed to prefer boarding actions and attempts to kill the crew rather than trying to take out the ship instead.
I really, really want to see that ship when it arrives. Hopefully it will be big enough to be the whole board rather than one piece of scenery. A boarding action sounds like an awesome scenario.
I don't think it will be big enough to be a whole board josh as awesome as that would be.
Im thinking of having it as a deployment point as the wako for a costal village assault and then maybe buying a Korean ship later on.
That way either ship can be used for Wako because they have no problem looting gak and I can do Wako vs Koreans, Wako vs Samurai and Samurai vs Koreans.
This is my costal mat. would have liked more water if I am honest but I can always get a smaller water mat to extend it in the future.
Got news earlier the ship is on its way to me. However he was out of oars so they will come a little later. I will do an unboxing if you like.
It looks like they've used either model train water sheets or the textured plexiglass you can buy for lighting panels. Slap a piece of colored construction paper or a 'mat' underneath and you have instant sea.
Just leaving salute. Pretty sure I am bankrupt at this point. First time in a long time I decided to just get what I want without worrying about much it costs. That's not strictly true there were more things I wanted but decided to abstain from.
If any of you are interested I will post up photos of the various tables of there and some of the stuff I bought as long as you promise to make no attempt to tell me how much I spent.
Highlight tables include the battle of hoth. Oshiro mode. Terrains samurai board and a huge pirate ship board with pirate island.
Also had a paranticipation game of daisho a small skirmish game in mythical Japan and will be reordering the rules on release.
Out with the misses in China town atm but will post something on the way home
While I didn't buy any x wing stuff mistakes were most certainly made this day. I missed salute for the past few years due to my head injury so I may have over compensated.

Build a Rice Barn the other day, Did a quick paint job on my Bridge, build a few garden wooden box things, Glued some cherry blossom trees and bamboo to stands, and got quick base coats on a ship and boat over the past week or two as well
I decided to see how my table is coming along by quickly laying some stuff out on my mat. Not everything is finished painting and I obviously need a few things like a river and maybe another building or two.
Let me know what you think. Not everything has finished being painted.
I now have a shelf to keep my Samurai stuff on, at least for the time being
Better look at the Samurai. Will get clear closeups once the Sashimono are attached (Will then give them a once over and any needed touch ups)
Better look at the terrain
Someone hiding in the trees
Overview of the game mat. Bridge looks lonely without a river. Layout far from finalized.
Your table is coming along nicely. I think the shelf really works in the way you've got it there to display your figures and terrain as well - the terrain makes it all look almost like a diorama.
No texture on anything. Everything except the resin inserts are just flat strips of card.
If your willing to spend ages with a hobby knife scratching in texture they might be alright. But how they look in the photos is a far cry from how they look if you build and paint them.
After way too long I have finished a Buntai for Ronin.
Hoping to move swiftly on to Koreans, Sohei or Bandits next. Haven't decided which but feel free to say what you are most interested in seeing. That said the misses wants to play with whatever I paint second so her vote will probably veto yours just a warning.
The Miniatures consist of Mostly Perry Miniatures but the leader with the huge sword and Red Hoop Sashimono is from Steel Fist Miniatures. Once my Kickstarter from them arrives I plan to work on a Tokugawa Buntai with Ieyasu leading the troops and Honda Tadakatsu on horse back also.
The buildings you can mostly see are from 4 ground. I do have some Oshiro buildings which are a little smaller but just as fantstic. Problem is I royally suck at terrain painting.
Finally the Uesugi Decals except the one on the banner bearer (Who is a constant source of annoyance as not only does it keep falling over but I put the decal on backwards :?) are from CompanyB. I asked them to make a set for me a while ago and it seems they will be going on general release soon.
As ever I apologies for the Photo Quality. Poor lighting and only a phone camera which ends up looking like I smeared vasline on the lens. Will try to take a few better photos outside tomorrow if the sun keeps up.
They really look nice man, and with the terrain you've got a great complete set going on. Personally, I'd like to see the bandits as I quite like your bandit leader. But if I recall you'll probably end up doing Koreans next
The Sohei are tempting as a few of them do have paint on them already.
The only one who kinda doesnt look like he fits with the rest of them is the guy in red. I may later make a red Armour Uesugi Buntai to swap him too and put another Samurai in his place.
I say leave the red guy in. Any samurai over a certain rank would have worn customized armor, and the sashimono ties him to the rest of the buntai quite nicely.
Its less that and more I will probably build another Ueusgi buntai as I want to use most of my Ronin models in KOW. So if I have red Uesugi vs Black Uesugi its easier to tell between the two. We will see how it goes though.
Looking forward to getting my steel fist kickstarter pledge soon ish which will be the start of a Tokugawa Buntai.
Here are what the Korean models look like btw Josh. Two of them will have shields that are not yet attached.
The Japanese warband has come up really nicely there, and the great looking scenery selection just sets them off well. They've really come a long way. The Koreans look interesting as well. I know even less about them than I do the Japanese.
Work on the Koreans started yesterday. Going to paint up the archers first.
I know next to nothing about the Koreans either Azazel only that the Samurai invaded Korea and that a Joint force of Koreans and Ming Chinese fought back against the invaders. They look cool though so I picked them up at salute to fight against the Samurai.
Is this for the ships? For small flat surfaces, I usually do a very dark brown basecoat, chestnut brown stripes to simulate individual planks, add swirly lines in a medium/leather brown for the grain, then hit the whole thing with a chestnut/soft tone wash to make the contrast less harsh. I'm not sure that would work for a whole ship, though.
Those Koreans look really nifty. Are those the Perry ones?
Battle pictures look great, but I commented on those elsewhere already. For painting wood - what exactly are we talking about here? Wooden poles on weapons or rather wooden beams on buildings and such?
If it's got enough texture drybrush is the way to go, else you can paint on wood grain to fit, then wash, then reinforce wood grain if required. Or if it's got texture highlight edges and such manually.
You could do as much as you can with acrylics (basecoat, drybrush, etc), then go over them with oils. Oil wash for the textured parts and add your own textures with different oil paints on the smooth.
Couldn't sleep but was too tired to paint. Decided to break out photo shop and try to make a reference card for Ronin. I am terrible and remembering rules and stats so I figured that reference cards with the units skills and stats on them would be helpful for when I start to play.
I made a basic template for it so I can add any other units and values I want into it. Not 100 happy with it might need to tinker with colours, font and background but I was wondering what you guys thought of the basic idea and what you think i should change. I also plan on taking clearer pictures to use on the card as the unit identifer when I have the card itself sorted.
So far the best suggestions for the cards have been change the unit name to something more readable and actually include Yari on the Ashigarus's equipment.
Those do look nice. You might also consider putting a brief summary of the attributes if you have trouble remembering and don't want to crack open the rulebook mid-game.
JoshInJapan wrote: Those do look nice. You might also consider putting a brief summary of the attributes if you have trouble remembering and don't want to crack open the rulebook mid-game.
Thats a very good idea. Would have to distill the explanations in the rule book to something a bit smaller though.
Im not that familar with the rules either. I have looked at the buntai creation rules many times to create lists to help me decide what to paint but the actual game rules I have only looked at maybe once or twice.
I didn't think they were that confusing, most of the abilities just add an extra dice, +1 bonus, etc. You *may* want to add the +/- init / +/- damage value for the weapons too though like
Naginata (+1/+1) or whatever it is.
So not much progress to update latley considering I have been learning and failing to grasp painting white. Still the unarmoured part of my korean force is considered done (mostly) for me, the bases still need doing but I will do the entire force at once. Not the greatest painting in the world but I am ok with it. Might go back to them one day in the future if I get better at white but I just want to get them finished at this point.
So here is what I have. Next update should contain their armored buddies. Hopefully in a few weeks but I wouldn't hold my breath.
When I take the photos of them all together I will probably try to do it outside so I can get some decent lighting and use the misses phone which has a better camera than mine.
Yeah, white is tough, especially if there is a lot of it. For what it's worth, I find it better to treat white as very light grey, with a final highlight of white.
Thanks Josh. What I did was use very light grey. Then put white on the higher parts, then watch with despair and frustration as the white trickled down into the recesses, then just try painting the whole thing white then put the light grey back into the recesses near the end. Will be more careful next time.
Automatically Appended Next Post: BTW if anyone has any photo taking advice along with any how to paint white advice I would love to hear it.
Maybe your white it too watery? Another option is a very thing glaze of dark blue-grey, making sure you go back and pick up the glaze that settles on the raised areas.
Yet another option is desert yellow/ivory, highlighted up to white.
For photos, it depends on what you have access to. If you can get A3 prints, google "photography backgrounds" and print some of the various backgrounds out. Even A4 will work (though obviously A3 is more versatile.
My "photo box" is just some segments of a cheap shelving unit with opaque sides that I then blu-tac-ed some baking paper over the top.
The three lamps are $10 specials from the local hardware store, and the bulbs in them are "white light" LEDs. Again, cheap and cheerful.
I've seen people do the same as I've done with the shelving unit using a cardboard box with panels cut out of it instead (and then the baking paper).
Automatically Appended Next Post: For white, try base coating white and then shade it by mixing your off-white of choice (Wolf grey, P3 Menoth Base, P3 Menoth White, Orc Brown, etc) with a medium (Lahmian Medium is actually really good) to make a subtle shading wash.
If your white is too thin/watery, these are some guesses.. You might also want to not thin your white paint, make sure your brush is damp but has no water in the reservoir, or even try a different brand of white paint.
IT was certainly frustrating enough that Sohei will probably be painted after bandits now. Though apparently my local game store is having a flames of war Journyman this year so might start cracking out the FOW stuff after the koreans.
I have not used their website before so their checkout system is a little confusing I have to say. I think I have ordered but I cant be 100% sure atm.
Still after speaking to the creator of the rules before salute and trying them afterwards I have had the money for them put away since.
I also picked up one of their bargan grab bags because why the hell not.
My hope is that I get some of their ronin range (Bandits or Monks would be ideal) and some of their Fist Full of Kung Fu stuff. But a nice random selection of Mini's wont hurt.
Here is my Korean leader based on Admiral Yi. I noticed after taking the photo that the model needs a little neatening up especially around the weapon hand.
I feel something is missing though. If you have any tips on how to make it look better please share.
Cork Brown is my base colour for skin but I think its a little too dark as even the darkest korean skin I have seen isn't that dark. Then I usually add a bit of standard flesh tone too the cork brown for highlights.
I am still experimenting to find a colour I really like. With my Ashigaru archers I used a small variety of skin tones to represent the different skin colours people can have.
Yeah I will touch it up and then repost it when I finsish the other four armored guys for the group.
So It seems I need to drop the Koreans for at least a few days. LGS asked me to get involved with the local Flames of War Campaign which starts on the weekend. Which means I need to at least assemble and base my flames of war stuff by then. Ideally I would like it assembled based and undercoated before the first game with it, would rather it painted but that just isn't happening in time.
Progress has started this week. I layed out everything I had done so far to see where I stand and its looking ok so far. I have about 4 more cromwell tanks build, two more infantry platoons to base and along with Bofors and Ram Kangroos that should arrive later this week I recived as Birthday Gifts. With any luck they will be built by friday and I can spend friday spraying everything.
Once they are undercoated I will probably finish the last few Koreans before trying to hammer the Flames of War stuff out while the campaign is on.
Yeah I most certainly do. Had a demo game today to help understand the basic rules of the game. Seems quite fun managed to use my Fireflys to take out the gemrans Stugs get the Fireflys all destroyed or bailed out due to anti tank guns, lose half of my infantry platoon to mortar fire and another quarter to assualting and then finally mow the enemy commander down with a heavy machine gun to finish.
During the game I learnt that assaulting is deadly, spreading out troops is very important if you dont wish to get mortared to high heaven and using mortars to pin is an extremely useful tactic. Also Anti Tank guns are scary. All in all it was fun and I am excited for the upcoming campaign
Everything I need for my list that isn't currently in the mail is not at the very least assembled and undercoated. Something which took longer than I would have liked but I am still happy I got done before the weekend.
Its probably the most progress on a gaming project I have ever made in a single week. Considering very little of that was built or based at the start of the week.
So the bad news about the campaign is that a lack of axis players means at least one allied player had to defect. In this case it was one of the soviet players. We played a mission where I as the defender had to hold three objectives until the end of the game and I would have to withdraw a platoon every turn after turn three although after turn five I could also withdraw objectives at the same time. The Soviets had to take a single objective to win. However the 53rd welsh had a much larger deployment area and cold hold a unit in ambush. We never specified what the objectives are so I shall pretend that they are wounded officers for the purposes of the retelling. I am trying to remember what happened so expect misrepresenting and leaving things out. Its also almost certainly biased as I am far more likely to remember the cool stuff I did that the cool stuff the other guy did. I also might be misrepresent the enemy tank types.
The 53rd welsh got caught off guard by a company of Soviets that defected to the Axis forces under a charismatic general Banin. Banin convinced them that despite the death toll at Stalingrad they were still better off joining their former enemies the Germans than remaining with the rest of the allies. Caught off guard by the betrayal several British officers with valuable information including troop movements got injured. The 53rd welsh had to prevent the capture of these officers at all cost while simultaneously withdrawing, fatigued troops to safety before being over run.
The welsh quickly set up a defensive perimeter with two full infantry companies defending two of the officers, a Mortar team and a Vickers machine gun team with the final officer. Also in the defensive perimeter was two Skins Patrols containing a a mix of Firefly and Cromwell tanks and a set of 6pdr anti tank guns. Finally there were also anti air guns, Universal carrier troop transports and a Platoon of Riflemen hidden in a forest unknown to the Russians.
The Russians struck first a barrage of Rockets from a Katyusha rocket launcher pounded down on the anti air guns destroying two of them, also caught by the shrapnel was a few members of the first rifle team lead by Tasker Watkins who ran to the cover of nearby buildings. Soon after came ISU-152 tanks backed up by some T34's exchanging fire with one of the Firefly and Cromwell Skins platoon . War was quickly upon us.
The welsh launched a counter attack straight away taking out a ISU with their 6pdr guns and a T35 with their fireflys. The second group of British tanks drove straight up for the Katyusha launchers taking out a few of their number but barely denting their effectiveness. Soon a second barrage of rockets came down further damaging Tasker Watkins platoon and the Universal carriers retreated to safety with their crews. This was followed by an ill fated assault charge by Tasker who's men got chewed up by gunfire, the few remaining men shaken and afraid decided to retreat rather than face further losses. Rockets kept pounding down on the second infantry team and the tanks that supported them taking out one of their number and an air support bombing barely missed the Skins platoon leaving the tank crews feeling lucky to have survived that one.Exchanges between the British tanks lead to another T34 being put out of commission but quite quickly afterwards that tank platoon was wiped out to manand it was looking like the welsh were soon to lose, they also had to withdraw another unit to safety this time being the anti aircraft guns.
Another barrage from the Katusha destroyed the remaining tanks in that skins platoon. Behind enemy lines however the Cromwell's destroyed a great number of Katusha which cleared the way and allowed the Fireflys with them to flank the ISU-152 tank hunters taking them out of action with their powerful guns. While this was happening the Vickers HMG team tried creeping through the same forest where the final rifle platoon was hoping to prevent the Russian infantry from capturing the objective that was now left without a tank to defend it. However the Welsh now no longer had mortar support as it was now their turn to withdraw.
The Russian infantry team rushed quickly towards their objective but some of them got mowed down by machine gun fire. Breathing a sigh of relief and thinking they were safe the final rifle platoon burst out of the forest finsihing off the second half of the platoon killing them to a man. With the effectiveness of the Katusha's reduced the 6pdr crews could now work at full efficiency throwing out far more rounds in shorter periods of time, this lead to the final T35's being destroyed and the Welsh defending the objective hiding behind the smoking wrecks breathing a sigh of relief as for the first time in what felt like forever no one was shooting directly at them.
The Russian commander got in his car deciding he capture one of the now undefended officers himself. However his spotting team realized that the few guys with the undefended officer were loading him onto a stretcher to evacuate him via jeep. Banin realized that by the time he could reach that officer he would have been evacuated and that his forces were now too small to take the other objectives by force. He decided rather than waste the men had had with him he would hastily make a tactical retreat.
The remaining Welsh had one more mission that was top secret and the Russians had no idea they were trying to achieve it, they had to ensure that at the end of the battle they had troops close enough to the railway line to capture it if they successfully pushed the Russians back or blow it if the welsh were over run.. They accomplished this at the end of the fight and instead of blowing the explosives they had set they defused them to keep the railway line to supply their troops. Elated at the victory but saddened by the lost men the Welsh forces brewed a cup of tea for everyone and called in for reinforcements. The Russians however had to retreat with their tailed between their legs but vowed revenge.
I have never written anything close to a battle report before and I am not a great writer so I hope that gave a decent idea of how the battle went . The game was a great deal of fun and I probably did a poor job of portraying that here.
Thanks Eyeam. It was very fun. That ambush rifle platoon and being able to flank the tank hunter tanks pretty much turned the game around. Before that I was very much in a losing position.
Second game in the flames of war campaign today and the Welsh were victorious once more. However the words skin of my teeth come to mind.
Luckily I had a free naval bombardment which helped me take out so e powerful weapons or I would have been done for. My both tank platoons did very little getting destroyed by the second turn however the naval bombardment, infantry and tam kangaroos really saved the day for me. Near the end of the game it was coming down to the wire but I managed to move an infantry platoon into firing range of a machine gun platoon who were protecting an objective. Killing that platoon meant the Germans were down to less than 50% of platoons they started with and had to take a morale check which they failed. Thoughout the game my infantry repeatedly failed whenever they attempted to assault getting stopped in their tracks more than once. All in all a very close and fun second game and the Welsh have taken two pieces of teritory.
You are in luck Grim. I wrote that from my phone but now I am home I can share the photos.
You get points for land and points for optional objectives. Where you are land wise also effects where you can attack and sometimes there seems to be benefits to defending land. The Axis managed to defend a piece of land in the game next to me that now gives them naval bombardment when defending it.
Great stuff! It's good to hear about you getting in some games and better yet - doing well in a campaign. Your shot look really nice. I always like the look of FoW games/15mm WW2 in action. Less detailed but more scope than Bolt Action/28mm. Keep up on the FoW updates!
Yeah I really like the 15mm scale. Tanks and vehicles don't work with more than one or two on a table for my liking at 28mm and they are expensive as hell.
I dont have everything I need for my list yet so you can see at the top of the first two photos I have a black base with white tape representing a ram kangaroo.
carlos13th wrote: It was very close. Without the other guy losing a morale check after having half his army die not sure i would have made it much further.
Yeah Germans with an unbroken spirit would fight to the last man, Loss would be outcome, but breaking their spirit was a lucky break! Awesome!
Yeah Germans have a speical rule where pretty much any solider is able to become the new platoon command if they die. Which seems to help them with morale and removed the use of taking out the leader.
Not much painting progress latley. Been busy actually playing for a change. Flames of War and Star Wars Edge of the Empire have been a lot of fun.
I wanted to share what I received in the mail today though.
Disappointed that the tins with token and dice sets for flames of war have been discontinued I decided to see if I could do my own version. Since getting a British set is difficult without spending an arm and a leg and a welsh set was never made.
Here is an example of the official now discontinued sets.
Sadly I don't have the cash to pick up custom dice and the tin I ordered was too small to hold both my dice and my tokens but anyway here is what I ended up with and is now my flames of war gaming kit.
The dice are from Chessex. The Tokens are custom from Warbases and the tin is a tobacco tin from ebay. Its not as fancy as the custom ones but I like it, they all fit well together and its nice to have stuff clearly themed to my army. Might get on the case of some custom dice in the future though.
My version isn't quite as nice cohesive or professional but I am happy with the result.
I have seen people rub crayon into laser cut grooves on acrylic to make it stand out more. Might try that on some of these, see how it works.
If you do crayon... be SURE of the color you're going to use before you start, it is a *bear* to get the crayon back out. I think white and black work the best, I was gonna use red on an x-wing token and immediately regretted my sample area even.
But crayon really does make them pop.
Cool tin, too bad it doesn't fit the dice too, but then again it's a chessex brick so pretty convenient on it's own.
I also must say... you Welsh have an outstanding flag. feth basically everybody else, you have a dragon
Havent painted or played any games recently. Went back home for a week to visit the folks and have been pretty busy.
Good news is my Steel Fist kickstarter just arrived and the quality of the sculpts is awesome as ever.
Quick question to those of you who are reading. Have you ever played Bushido? Very tempted to get into it as its popular at the local club and they now have tengu.
Yeah my order wasn't perfect either was missing some spear guys but Oliver at steel fist has been pretty great at correcting mistaken orders in the past so i am not worried at all.
I added some non kickstarter stuff to my order too so I ended up Ishida both mounted and on foot, Honda both mounted and on foot, Ieysu and the models that come with the on foot versions of each of those.
Yeah, he seemed pretty apologetic in his message. I ordered a pack of teppo ashigaru so he wouldn't have to eat the cost of postage.
I got the two charging samurai packs (to make a troop of hashimoto for KoW), Ishida and Ii. All the models are nice enough that I'll be taking my time painting them instead of cranking them out like I do most of my other minis.
For a short period of time Northstar were selling the Samurai and the ranged ashigaru box for a fiver a box. While a great deal I don't like them enough to want any more. Good way to cheaply make a samurai army if you like them yourself though.
North Star Games have been selling them off recently, but yeah, I couldn't justify getting them either. And about your last post, carlos.... yeah, I'm inclined to agree. Let's see how this whole Warlord Games distribution deal turns out. There'll be a price hike, that's for sure, but I just hope that they don't kill off the WGF brand and that they don't get rid of too many boxes.
Didn't realize there was a Warlord and WGF deal going on. I like what WGF is doing in general and I am glad that someone is making plastic samurai even if I feel they are sub par its better to have a not perfect option than none at all.
In other news played a demo game of Bushido the tonight and enjoyed it a great deal. Will be picking up a tengu force and joining in with the store campaign.
Hey guys. Just to let you know I am not dead. Just so busy with the new job I have hardly any painting time. I am working on some bushido stuff at the moment though as their is a campaign going on. Gonna try to make some time this weekend as well to get some painting done.

Bit late finding this unoffical army list for Warhammer fantasy now that GW has taken it to the shed round back and put a bullet in it but figured I would share anyway.
I hated that army list. It felt like whoever wrote it was a really annoying manga and/or anime fan. Sumo Warriors? Kabuki Dolls? Historical samurai armies were interesting enough without all this fanboy crap.
That bad huh? I only flicked through it so far. In all fairness though it is set in the warhammer fantasy universe which historically inspired but far from historical. That said I would have rathered the fantasy come from stuff like Kami, Oni and other Yokai.
Thats a shame. Have you ever read Killer Katana's? I cant get hold of a copy of either the first or second for a reasonable price.
Managed to make some progress on my tengu force for Bushido (also contains human tribes people and Kami) today. Nothing is finished yet but things are starting to look colorful at least.
Good stuff, carlos. Just saw your decidedly Welsh dice box from the other page now. Nice touch.
Say, did you have a look at those Daisho rules which were released a few months ago? They also cover slightly fantasy-ish feudal Japanese things. Maybe worth having a look at. It's like 15 quid for a hardcopy.
Thanks sig. Yeah I picked up daisho rules on release. I played a game at salute which convinced me to pick up a copy. Haven't actually had the chance to play a game since I got the rules mind you but I do have them.
I really need to carve out some painting time as I went on a painting course a few weeks ago but have yet to have a chance to put that stuff into practice.
Looking good! All I would suggest is hitting it with a matte varnish when you're done, just to take the shininess down a notch. Other than that, good stuff!
Looks good so far Carlos. There's a lot of black but disparate pieces are handled differently so it isn't too samey. I like it so far for sure, not what I could suggest.
I've read Killer Katana 2.The scenario section is excellent.
Yeah I kinda got distracted by Batman stuff for a bit But the Tengu will be finished soon.
I need to get myself a copy of Killer Katana's 2.
Think I am going to spend a bit of time putting some more contrast on Nightwing.
Searched my emails to see where I got my copy and found I bought it from Caliver Books 6 years ago. They still list a revised version on their website so I assume they have stock, however while it's slightly cheaper than the version I bought it's still expensive.
Thanks mate. Yeah I've seen it on caliver books but I have to be honest it's a little more than I wanted to pay. Will still get it in the future though,
Nightwing is now Finished. Red Hood (Arkham Knight Version) will be up next I think.
Didn't do much from the last time. Added some electricity to the Eskrima sticks and touched up a mistake here and there. Then chucked the guy on his base and considered him done. Sadly the photos don't really seem to show the highlighting very well or that the eyes are white.
Thanks mate. Had fun painting that one. Never worked with so much black before. I think the red scheme from the new 52 nightwing comics stands out more than the blue would have.
JoshInJapan wrote: That looks really nice. The red stands out without being garish, and the black works well at the distance in these photos.
thanks I am a little worried the highlights on the black won't be very visible at tabletop distance. If that's the case I will revisit it. But for now I have so much to paint I am happy leaving it there.
I kept the base simple using the knight models bases with the slot filled in with putty then painted an highlighted as I wanted the model to be more of the focus than the base. Might do more with other bases, not sure yet
Quickly blocked out my colour scheme for red hood tonight. It was a rush job to get an idea of how the colour looked on the model so its pretty sloppy. Wanted to get some of your thoughts before I went any further. What do you guys think? Does it work?
A little about my chosen and planned colour scheme and Batman Arkham Knight Spoilers Ahead
Spoiler:
The trousers I will attempt to paint like this
in order to give a Nod to the Character being the reformed...ish Arkham Knight. Instead of the white jacket from the game I decided to go for the Brown jacket that the comic book red hood uses. The Armour on the legs will Silver and I am unsure if I will make the straps for equipment a dark leathery brown, a browny red or a dark grey colour.
Paradigm wrote: Nice! Those are Black Plague, yes? What do you think of the minis, quality wise?
Yup. I like them. They seem better than the older Zombicide stuff and are easier to paint. There is a lot of them though. Really like the idea of having a fully painted board game.
I really enjoy putting my fully painted Imperial Assault on the table, even if I've only managed to do so once or twice. Most of my inspiration to finish Mars Attacks and Dungeon Saga comes from the finished IA.
So 2015 goals didnt even end up half done. Going to be more modest this year and Aim for the following.
Paint at least 4 models for every one I buy. Preferably I would like this ratio to be even higher but we shall see. Looking over the models I have unpainted and unused I just cant justify buying more at the moment. The Ratio I am working at should allow me enough leeway to purchase models to round out or finish forces I play with as long as I am also making painting progress.
Paint at least three playable forces for games. Would prefer to get closer to 5 or 6 forces but will start off doable for now and adjust if I feel I am making good progress. Also my progress will likely hinge on the games I choose to paint for. For Batman I could paint three or four models and call it a playable force. For Flames of war I would be looking at painting closer to 100+ models.
Candidates for forces to finish this year are.
Batman Crew for BMG
Scarecrow Militia for BMG
Tengu for Bushido
Nomads for Infinity
Haqqislam for Infinity
British for Flames of War
Various Samurai forces for Ronin/Daisho
Bane crew for BMG (This is not a priority as these models are painted due to me buying them second hand, they will get stripped and painted at some point but not sure when.)
I also want to fully paint the Zombicide Black Plague box. This will be a joint goal with the misses and we might try for the expansion when it comes too.
If anyone has a particular force they want to see me attempt to paint (Hopefully before i get bored and see something else shiny) let me know. Not saying I will choose the one you wanna see but it might sway my choice if I am on the fence.
Batman is certainly up there. Already painted Nightwing and being in the middle of Red Hood I am already arguably 25% done on a crew. That said for Batman Crew I have the following to paint
Red Hood
Batman
AK Batman
Robin
Arrow
Azreal
And will probably want to at least one batman and all the rest before I consider that added to the goal.
I also have every Militia model to get on with.
In terms of Bushido a lot of the models already have some paint on them which should help matters.
Pretty much nothing I own from infinity is painted. But the chance of an infinity journeyman happening at the FLGS this year might give me the kick up the arse I need to paint my nomads.
The new Zombies look great. I have to ask - of the nominees to finish this year, which force is the closest one to completion? Because I'll vote for that one!
Thats a good call Az. Arguably the Batman one is the closest to being finished due to it being the smallest. It also is the one I am most enthusiastic for atm so is likley to get work done on it. However the bushido one probably has the most paint on the models but is around double the size.
The least close to being finished are probably the british from flames of war due to sheer numbers. Most of that stuff is undercoated the correct color but there is an insane amount of it.
My Koreans for Ronin are probably a quick finish too being mostly complete.
I'd be very interested in seeing the Tengu completed, but if Batman is closer to completiton then I say finish him up first. Theres nothing like that sense of accomplishment to help motivate getting more done.
If you get stuck have a set of zombicide zombies ready to the side of your paint desk. They are quick to do and can help getting the juices going again. What level did you get in on the kickstarter for? I got the $150 pledge and some add ons for just over 200 figures. Almost went double on the sets to get double extras, but funds at the time were lacking.
I got the Knight pledge. With so much included in that pledge I felt no need to get more. Plus the extra survivor packs didn't do a whole lot for me.
It also helps that I am much more likley to get a game of Bushido at the local store than a game of Batman. But we shall see none the less.
All the zombies in the Zombicide box is primed and the box itself is under my desk so they are always pretty close to hand and ready to paint. Would be working on some now if it wasnt for me having what I am sure is the flu.
Nice zombies! I've been painting a pile of board game stuff this year, and I really like that it is sort of self contained, no assembly and usually fairly simple models that I can knock out in a short timeframe.
I reckon get your Batman stuff finished, and then look at what is getting played the most in the local store. Playing with your toys is the best motivator for painting them!
@Evildrcheese: Nomads are a faction from infinity. They are essentially space 4chan.
Spoiler:
Not my painting or my models btw
@Da Boss
Yeah getting to use stuff certainly does. I am a an of stuff being relativly self contained too. If only due to it preventing you spending a bunch more money on extra's.
Due to them being 15mm I wont count them per model to my goal but per base. That's 10 models added to my painted total with 4 more being that have been dipped and is waiting to dry.
GrimDork wrote: Still 10 more is pretty good, your numbers sound pretty darn high for the year compared to last year's pacing.
Screw you Grim . Yeah you are right last years pace wasn't fantastic. Don't know how may I got done last year but pretty sure it wasnt high. Hoping this year will be a significant improvement.
Thanks Para. Only about another billion models to go for my British infantry.
Was a compliment to this year not a disparagement about last year As it stands you've got me swamped under the table but I've got 10 or so minis in the works, semi batch painted so I'll try to give you a run for the money.
carlos13th wrote: If you overtake me I will just start counting the 15mm guys as one each
Wait you mean smaller sized models don't count as one.....so much for getting around to Arcane Legions . So does that mean my Demogorgon figure counts as 1 also? It's almost knight sized?
Carlos is doing a paint more than you buy personal restriction/challenge/goal. If he were just going for raw numbers I would advocate counting each 6/15mm model but since he wants some dollar value worked into his calculations I can see the reasoning.
Yeah pretty much what grim said. I want to have a 4:1 Painted to bough ratio or higher this year in order to make a dent in my backlog.. If I bought a batman miniature that takes several hours to paint for every 4 15mm flames of war models I bought then I wouldnt feel like I had made much progress.
So far I have painted 10 miniatures and bought five so I need to paint at least 10 more miniatures to get to the ratio I want.
The five things I bought were in one instance added onto a paint order and in the other instance something that is expensive, rareish and I haven't seen available in the UK for over a year. For the most part however I want to get my ratio to an appropriate level before I buy more stuff not after.
Oh I totally get what he's doing, I was just joking with the size of Demogorgon I think he'd be more than one figure.
From a money and time standpoint I should try the same goal. I also want to ditch a bunch of my horde (infinity and old metal marine stuff), so maybe I can figure selling 10 of those removes one bought figure or something like that to the goal.
Count him as two mate. (I don't actually know how big the fella is, he might be worth 5.) do you have a photo? Very tempted to break out some 6mm samurai towards the end of the year and count them individually, just for the lulz.
Could always do it on a pure cash basis for sales mate. Sold models goes into your model fund and use that.
What's your reasoning for getting rid of infinity? Just not into it anymore?
Here's an image of the Demogorgon
Zombie from Black Plague at his feet for scale reference, or paint bottle next to him as well. I think he's worth at least 2
I jumped in on infinity with the big icestorm hype train, and the one person I usually can play against (brother in law), has no interest in anime related games. He'll play KOW, Bloodbowl, even got him playing necromunda and mordheim and Zombicide, but not really into anything more modern than civil war stuff.
I am blessed and cursed with local stores. There are about a dozen gaming stores here in St. Louis, MO and most are within a 1/2 hour drive from me including a couple within 10 minutes. I also have miniaturemarket less than 2 miles from my house my poor wallet. The main gaming stores are really hit and miss. The closest has a different gaming event every night of the week. 40K night, Warmachine night, X-wing/Attack Wing night, Magic Night and so on, but infinity hasn't caught on there. They've got tables and terrain, but they also have the resident players that have to shout profanity to be cool , and thats something that gets me doing it as well so not a good place for me or my kids. Plus my gaming time is so limited I just can't get time set aside to meet people to even talk about gaming, thats what Dakka is for .
Zombies are a rush job (There are nearly 70 of them) so they are getting basic block painted dipped in army painter stuff, matt varnished they some GW blood for the blood god (stupid name for a paint) to finish them off.
Necromancer and Survivors will get a little more work.
They were all undercoated with the Army Painter Necrotic flesh. I plan to paint a few a pale white colour however just too mix it up.
Red Hood is Finished. Its not the best paint job but I am happy with it and I want to make progress over perfection.
Arkham Knight Spoilers Below
Spoiler:
I decided to do two things with this model. I wanted to show a little more of the original Jason Todd outfit compared to the in game red hood but also wanted a call back to his role as the Arkham Knight in game. What I came up with is making the Jacket brown like the original Red Hood outfit but doing the Arkham Knight Red, Grey and White Camo pants.
Think I am going to buy a light box to improve my photos. Might pick up a camera too. My Ipad isnt the best photo taking device.
Really like that, the jacket is spot on as is the camo on the trousers! Any chance of some shots just against a clear background, that might help to get a better look at the mini itself?
Any plans to team him up with Arsenal/Speedy in future? Not technically allowed in the rules, but fits the background perfectly (now if only KM did a Starfire mini as well...)
Ive ordered a new camera and a lightbox so I will probably start getting better photos in a week or so. When I have a few done I will take a decent quality group shot.
Yeah I think I will paint up Speedy at some point. Not till I have put a dent in what I own already though.
I have no idea who Red Hood is (another Robin spinoff?) but the model looks great.
The Black Plague models also look fantastic. Are you just using the Army Painter dip that comes in a paint can? If so, which one? You're giving me ideas now...
For those who are interested I will be joining Azreal's Tale of How ever many sign up painter as further motivation to gt Zombicide done. If anyone else wants to join here is the Link.
I looked through their ranges over and over throughout the past few years, but I've got soo many minis lying around which I got just for painting them and I just don't have the time between commission work and gaming commitments. I've got to paint a ton of American Civil War dudes for an event in 40 days and I don't dare to think of them...
Thanks guys. Used the last of my testors spray to try matt varnishing them but there wasn't enough left. Reluctant to use the army painter stuff after what happened to the zombies.
Its contents containing some terrain I got for batman/Marvel Minitures game, fist full of Kung Fu and anythign else modern or near future for a mere £35 delivered. I have to admit I am quite happy with the deal I got. My only regret is I didn't pick up the second lot of stuff that was on offer. But then again I barely have the space to store this so maybe that is for the best.
Yea not bad for a joblot of prototypes that I stumbled.across.on ebay
Automatically Appended Next Post: Just wanted to share my nearly done and WIP stuff
Yakuza just need basing. Any ideas on how to base them?
Zombies (My painting challenge goal) Just need some blood and the bases painted
and after seeing the new GW Tau starter set I dug out some Tau I got in a job lot of other models a while ago and primed them. Gonna give speed painting them a go. If I enjoy paitning them I may pick up the box set later in the year.
That's some nice tattoo work, I'm afraid of going anything more detailed than tribal squiggles. For the bases, maybe you could build up some urban brick bases with green stuff.
I know it's rediculous to post, but I like the tile backspash . Reminds me of someone's P&M blog where they are building the huge cathedral and he paints the tiles in that dark green color.
So risky kebab is done. Might work a little on the interior and paint some detail on the door but at the moment risky kebabs is open for food poisoning.
Hey guys. Havent managed to base them yet but otherwise the Yakuza are finished. This month I am going to focus on painting up a warband for This is Not a Test.
I am going to do some factions loosley based on fallout with others that just seem interesting. I was wondering which you guys would most like to see. So I set up a poll. Also if anyone knows where I can get 28mm Car doors to use as riot shields please let me know.
We have the following options with the rules I plan to use with them
Survivors (Caravaners)
Spoiler:
These will be a collection of metal miniatures that you can find over on EM4. Sadly no rules for guys on bikes as of yet so he probably wont be included.
Raiders (Raiders)
Spoiler:
Some old school metal raiders looking like something out of Mad Max.
Cleaners (Preservers)
Spoiler:
Five guys in Hazmat suits and two old school looking power armours. Want to get kinda a germophobe finds the rest of the wasteland unclean filth kind of vibe with these guys. Think the enclave but with less power armour.
Cesears legion (Raiders)
Spoiler:
These will be made using plenty of Kitbashing with Vitrix Roman allies sprue as a base to convert from. I dont intend to make them fully accurate to the game I just like the theme of post apocolypic roman legion.
NCR (Peacekeepers)
Spoiler:
Will be using Wargames Factory Survivors and WW2 Russians in winter coats as the basis for these guys. Just need to source cowboy hats.
Tribals (Tribals)
Spoiler:
Will be using Wargames Factory romans as a base. Will try to Wasteland them up a bit though.
Have you thought about how you are going to kit the tribals out with weapons? (leave them as old fashioned things or maybe use a modern weapons sprue?)
I have made about 8 guys so far. and besides one of them that I added a plasma rifle type thing too the rest are pretty old fashoned with muskets and hand weapons. Might give one the next one or two some variety though. I am also using two frostgrave wizards as shaman.
Some Pictures.
You have a scout with a bow in one hand and an arrow in another.
A warleader with a pistol, an axe and some scrap armour and a Warbringer (Who according to the lore give up some of their soul to use relic weapons) Which is why he looks a little less tribal with his long hair and beard.
Next up we have a bersker with two axes, two tribal warriors and two tribals with muskets.
Finally here is the gang (Minus the shamans.)
Will be using these as the shaman, (Not my picture or painting) They are a little but more chunky than the woodland indans but I am not overly concerned.
Those are pretty nice models, as one would expect, I guess. Black Widow's uniform looks so tight that she probably can't breathe, but that's down to the sculptor. I'm looking forward to the finished product.
My suggestion for the gold on Stark would be to just hit that silver with a brown wash, that'll give a nice smooth finish and bring out the detail as well.
Thanks for the tip. Gave it a go but it didn't quite create the look I was after. Want to he a little brighter gold than that. Tried a yellow wash a few days ago but that didn't create the look I wanted either.
Azazelx wrote: Your Avengers are looking sweet. I thought you were going for a Silver Centurion look for your IM when I first saw the pictures.
I considered it but I think I prefer the red and gold look
Automatically Appended Next Post: Just so people are aware I am still working on the tribals. Its just the Marvel stuff and my airnbrush turned up and made me wanna jump on that first.
Does anyone have a decent photo of iron mans back for this miniature. I can't seem to find a decent reference. I think either para or azreal have painted iron man already but I am not sure.
That helps thanks. I wasn't sure if I needed to put any gold or silver on his I back but it seems like I don't. That said I might anyway if I can see somewhere it would fit
Thanks mate. Gonna go back over him over the weekend to finish off some last bits. Black widow is pretty much done too. Thor needs the most work and caps arm fell off yesterday so I need to fix that. Or attach a robot one to make him bucky cap like in the comic's (not actually gonna do that.)
These won't get finished for a while. In fact no hobbing for at least a few weeks. I suddenly need to find a new place to live and will likely have to sell a lot of my stuff. Will update when I'm painting again
Things are alright guys thanks for asking. Got a bunch of stuff to sort through and sell but I should be able to set aside some hobby time in the next week or two.
