Tank looks good. I like where the building is going too.
Did you and the wife like the hobbit movie? I'm still not sure how they crammed 3 books into 3 moviesbut the hobbit needs three by itself. Been a long time since I read it though.

We loved it. I thought it was the best of the three by far.

Happy Birthday to the blog!
The tank looks good, I really like the simplicity of the colour scheme.
I agree about The Hobbit, it was an amazing movie (for my money, the best film made since Return of the King). Shame GW have yet to produce any minis for it that are decent/reasonably priced.

You're right, GW has really just given up with the franchise. I actually like the lake town militia minis, but I think they're 24$ for three of them, and I can't justify that. Oh well. I imagine I will eventually be able to find them cheap on eBay.

Great work on the scratch built terrain, it is nice when you have the vision to turn something you would otherwise throw away into a useful item. Good job.

So I got it a game today with my IG. We played doubles to practice for the upcoming tournament. We randomly picked teams. I was teamed up with Orks against Tau and Necrons. We played Maelstrom missions and while it was pretty close, my team ended up losing 11-8. Had a blast and thought I would put a few pictures up of some of my newly painted Guard in action.
This is the start of the game. They have 4 units in reserve.
After the first turn. One of my chimeras exploded... boo.
My vets killed the Necron warlord on his chariot. Huzzah!
After killing the Necron overlord (whose chariot you can see in the background) my Vets assaulted and killed these Tau battlesuits as well.
And one more pic for good measure.
I had a blast playing, even with the loss. Will get back to painting tomorrow. Thanks for looking guys and feel free to comment.

So I've been working a lot on my Guard. Mostly on infantry and I figured I wouldn't bore people with more Guardsmen.I've also been working on some of the scenery I showed earlier, but haven't really gotten it to a place where I'm ready to show any more. But I have also been working on my Vampire counts army and got a few models done this evening. I figured I would throw a few pics up and see what you guys thought.
First up are my hexwraiths. These are just some Bretonnian knights errants I got for free. I stuck some VC shields on them and painted them like ghosts and BAM!! Hexwraiths.
Next I needed to get a paint scheme for my ghoul unit. I have 40 of these so I needed something quick. I think this will work just fine when ranked up.
And thats all I've got for tonight. Gonna try to get some more work done on my guard army tomorrow night. Fri day I have to work from 7am to 9pm so there will be no hobbying. Saturday is the tourney. I'll take a few pics and post them if you guys are interested... and probably will anyways if you're not. Thanks for looking and feel free to comment!

I like the ghost knights, looks solid.
Ghouls seem fine too.
Good luck at your game!

The use of Knights as Hexwraiths work really well. The small addition of the Vampire Counts shields also adds an unusual point of interest.
The Ghould scheme seems clean and hopefully quick (I am a big fan of quick) but I think the photo in front of that big yellow/orange background makes them look a little anemic, but as undead that may be your plan.....
Look forward to an update after your tournament and good luck.

Thanks guys! I really like how the hexwraiths came out as well. I've seen the idea a lot of places but I got my scheme from one of the girls in our group who has been building her own end times VC army. Nagash and a lot of those models have ghosts on them, and this is how she painted them. So I stole it.
@Archer, you're right about the pictures. That yellow box you see in all my pictures is just my hobby knife box. I think I'm going to break down and build a light box in the next couple days. I've been taking crappy pictures for over a year now, its probably time to step up my game.

Post by: Archer
I don't think you necessarily need a lightbox unless of course it interests you. Just maybe get a different color box for certain photos?
I have been taking crappy photos for ages now and don't intend to change......but thats because I am lazy on that sort of thing.

So I got to play in our gaming groups second ever tournament yesterday. It was a doubles tourney. Everyone brought 1k at we teamed people up at random. The one catch was, we had a lot of inexperienced players want to play (the new store in our area has brought in a lot of fresh blood) so we teamed up new guys with vets. I thought it was a great idea. I got teamed up with a Necron player who had a heavy armor list like mine, so our lists worked well together. Anyways, I took pictures of the first two games, but forgot in the third game, as it was pretty intense. There were ten teams there (so 20 people) and my partner and I came in second. I have come in second in both of the tournaments we've had, so I guess thats pretty good. Anyways, enough of me talking. On to the pics! Game 1 IG and Necrons vs Tau and Dark Eldar. The Tau player is an old college friend and the guy who got me into 40k. He also won the last tourney we had, so I was not happy to draw him in the first round. It was a tight game, but we pulled off a tie on the last turn. I was just fine with that result. Enemies starting deplyoment. They have a lot in reserve. Some of their reserves coming in. And the end of the game. We were both pretty content to sit back and shoot, so thats why there isn't a whole lot of stuff in each other's deployment zone. We did got line breaker on the last turn by flat outing a necron skimmer. That is what tied the game for us. The second game we played against the TO and his partner. They played Tau and space wolves. We got a major victory in this game. I feel like we played well, but it also seemed like everything just went our way. I'll take it. Also, take a look at this awesome table one of the guy's made just for the tourney. He made all the terrain you will see in the following pictures. This is after our first turn. Action shot! These guardsmen will survive being in the middle of the table most of the game, H2H with space marines led by a wolf priest (they were saved by the necron overlord) and they make it all the way across the table to sit on an opponents objective. That's why they're vets! The left flank during the middle of the game. This goes pretty well for us. This is on the right flank. The riptide kills Pask, but the vets hold him up the rest of the game without losing a single man. Finally the end of the game. Took a pic of those vets I was talking about earlier, chilling on an objective with some scarabs. The third game we played against Grey Knights with an Imperial Knight and Eldar. We killed everything but the knight, but we were still down by 3 objectives going into our final turn. We were able to score 4 points on the last turn and pull out a minor victory which put us in 2nd overall. Sorry I didn't take pics, but I was way too into the game. Overall, I had a great time. Thanks for taking the time to read all my blabbering and feel free to comment!

A few more pictures that the store owner posted on his site. After this I'll be back to painting, I promise! Tau deep striking behind our lines. Better picture of my second game. There I am to the left in the blue shirt. And this is the only picture there is of my third game. At least there's one! That me back there in the blue shirt again. They also kept most of their army in reserves, which is why you don't see much of their stuff. This was the board after the first full turn. Ok, I'm going back to paint now. For real this time. The question is, Guard or Vampire Counts?

So I lied about making a light box, but it is on the agenda. Promise.
So my gaming group has decided to play kill team for our games day in February. I wanted to do something a little different and work on some converting. So I have a few boxes or orks from the stormclaw set, as well as some other odds and ends, so I figured I would make my kill team from those components. Started on the Gretchin tonight and got the first two done. Also got some killa kans built. I'm gonna throw one in my list, but not sure which of the three yet. Here are a couple pics of the finished gretchin. So TL R the blog is gonna be very ork heavy for the next few weeks.
Anyone have any thoughts on the ork skin tone?

That was the old kill team. The original that was in White Dwarf. We're going to be using the Heralds of Ruin rules. It's a blog one of our guys found and they have made their own version that they keep updated. Pretty cool stuff. Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok, got two more Orks done tonight. That's four in two days. I can't keep that pace up forever, but I'm gonna try at least for the next couple days. Tonight I painted one more gretchin and a Nob. The Nob may turn out to be my leader, haven't decided yet. Anyways, here are a few pics.
I'm really pleased with how the Nob came out. I like the weathering, and think he looks worn without being over done. Thoughts?

Damn your eagle eyes! Hadn't noticed that. I will clean it up. These weren't meant to be Goffs, really. The armour is actually a really dark blue. It's the color "stegadon green" (go figure) from GW's paint line that Ive washed down even darker with Agrax Earthshade. I just didn't want my orks to be too bright, and am trying to give them more muted colors.

So work has been hectic this week, so I wasn't able to paint much, but I've been working on my Ork kill team this morning. We were asked to write a bit of background for our kill teams. We were given the name of the system / planets we were fighting over and told to write a quick story. Here is mine... mind you, I am not a writer, so don't judge too harshly. The Deathskull Grog Bonechompa started out as a Nob in the Great painboy Dok's retinue. Waaaaggghhh Dok went on to the Tau empire to attack the planet of Arkunasha. On their way to the Tau empire, Dok's fleet passed by the Lopra system. Unable to wait for a new fight, Grog branched off from the main Waaaagggh and descended onto the planet Vanope. Upon landing, Grog found the nearest town and attacked. After a short but brutal fight, the PDF was able to repel Grog's attack. He has spent the last few years eeking out a life on Vanope's harsh outer zones. Steadily gathering more of his scattered mob back to his banner, Grog is ready for another attack. And this time, not only does he plan to stomp some humies, he also has his eye set on a new ship, so he can get off of this rock and start his own WAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!! The first thing I did was kit bash a few boys together. This has bits from the fantasy orc box, the 40 ork box, and the nob and flash git box. Just trying to make my boyz look unique, as well as a little poor. Like they've been stranded for awhile. They say death skulls are excellent and looting, so thats how I imagined these guys got their gear. Next I finished off two more gretchin this morning. Gonna have ten total in the team, so I have a few more to do. And thats all I have for now. Going to work on them some more for the next hour or so, then I'll be busy the rest of the day. Hopefullt get another update in tomorrow. Also, I have a small favor to ask. If you guys could maybe vote on a couple of these pictures I put up. I hate asking for votes but I would like to get some feedback. Also, if you do vote, be honest with your vote, I promise you won't hurt my feelings. Thanks!

Archer wrote:The Orks are great, will be awesome once some paint is added. Where did you get the head with the Cigar or is he one of your great conversions?
Its actually not a cigar. Its part of some weird machine snorkel thing on his head. I got it from the nob kit I believe.
Thanks for all the comments guys, I'm a fan of the gretchin myself and have a few more on the table drying as I type this. I got done with two of the Orks I showed in the earlier update. The 3rd is about half done but I wanted to show some progress.
Need to work on the mouth of the guy on the right. Forgot to paint his tongue and his teeth are a little messy. Close up pics show ALL.
Overall I'm pleased with how they came out. They're just regular boyz, so I didn't want to spend forever on them, but I think they have the look of the warband I'm going for. That being a poor ragtag group of Orks trying to get some loot and get off the planet. Thoughts?

GrimDork wrote:So is the hat a coincidence or did I check out earlier and fail to notice that these were pirate orks? They look good.
I don't know if they're pirates, so much as a ragtag group that has had to scrounge up as much gear as the could find. The pirate head is from the flash gitz kit but I just thought it was cool more than I thought pirate orks (if that makes sense).

Good to have some individuals in there.

I think they are perfect for down on their luck Orks, just trying to get by and scrounge some teef to by bigger guns. I like the potential of them becoming freebooters as the hat potentially suggests though....

Really liking how these are coming together. I have another regular boy, a boy with big shoota, a runtherd, and a killa kan primed up and ready to paint. Thanks T.O.T. I feel like I've been getting steadily better. I have been quite pleased with how these have come out as well. To prove that point, here are the first models I painted, about 5-6 years ago. Pretty rough, huh? It does make me appreciate how far I've come, and maybe in another 5 years or so I will be even better. So despite the fact that I haven't been on here much, I have got a little work done. I got a new gaming console, so that has slowed work down, but not stopped it entirely. First off, is my newest addition, a boy with rokkit launcher. Just fantasy ork parts mixed with 40k Nob parts. Next up, an early WIP of my Killa Kan. Need to think of a name for this guy. Suggestions? Next are a few shots of the most recently finished boy and gretchin. And lastly, because Archer asked so nicely, a shot of the whole Kill Team. Its obviously not done, but we are getting a few games of practice in tomorrow before the real even in two weeks, so I figired I'd get a shot while getting them all together. Notice I used the crappy Nobz from above as boys for the Kill Team. This won't be permanent, but I haven't had time to convert 4 more guys, so I just grabbed them off the shelf. They will be replaced in time for the official event. SO what are you guy's thoughts. Do they look good? Do we think they will perform well on the table? Please comment. I will take a few pictures of the games tomorrow and post them up either tomorrow night or Sunday morning.

Alright so I've been gone for awhile. About 5-6 weeks. I wish I had some good excuse but truth be told, I bought a PS4 and it sucked away all my free time. The Ork Kill team hasn't got any work done to it, as I haven't been able to get to the kill team events my group has been having due to real life (not PS4, really). That being said, I talked with an old college buddy today, and we decided to get a mini Mordheim campaign started in two weeks. It will be small, and we will each just take two warbands and play against each other, while switching warbands. Not as exciting as having a lot of people, but you work with what you got. I will be taking Mercenaries and The undead. I have a few models painted for both, but I wanted to do a few more before next weekend. I built some models today especially for the campaign and thought I would put them up. Paint will be coming soon.
Mercs first. The guy on the right will be my Captain. The guy on the left will probably join my Kislevite huntmen warband, some of which can be seen earlier in this very blog!
Next is my kit bashed necromancer. I have the stock one from the VC blister, but this is Mordheim and I wanted an original one. Thoughts?
They need a little cleaning up, but I will take care of that before I prime them.
So I know its been awhile, but I'm back. Just needed a little break. I look forward to getting this blog back on track but more importantly, I'm excited to see what some of you guys have been up to on your own blogs while I've been slacking. Thanks for looking guys and feel free to comment!

Yep looking good. Necromancer should do just fine, kind of an adventurer necromancer, kind of blends in with the rest of the riffraff in town.
43382
Post by: Archer
I like the kitbashed Necromancer. He looks suitably desperate to have turned his talents to the dark arts. Needs a pale complexion and dark clothes.
What legs have you used on the Captain? His stance is really different.
44899
Post by: squall018
The captain's legs are from the empire archer kit. I thought they were pretty cool too!
77159
Post by: Paradigm
Nice stuff! As I'm working on something rather Mordhiem-esque myself, I look forward to seeing how this progresses.
44899
Post by: squall018
So I cleaned up the Mordheim models and primed them. While I was waiting for them to dry, I pulled out the new box of Blood Angels and started working on some Space Marines for Paradigm's contest. I made three marines, two specialists and one sergeant. I also made an eversor assassin conversion. Been throwing the idea around in my head for awhile. He's in power armor so I'm going to include him in the contest. Anyways, here are a few pics.
These are strait from the box, no conversions. I still like them and they will plug some holes in my BA army. Also, I dislike the new bases.
The Eversor is just BA legs and torso, with scion arms. I think the skull head is from the WOC box.
That's my entry. Paint will happen later this week.
About to start on the Mordheim models. Will probably have pics up tomorrow.
44899
Post by: squall018
So I got the necromancer done. Nothing special, but he will do the job. Got some paint on the two mercs, as well as the marines, but all are too early WIP to be worth showing. Hopefully will get some picks up tomorrow. Anyways, enough yapping. Here is my Mordheim Necromancer.
Now that I'm looking at these pics, I realize I really need to get better at cleaning up mold lines. That will be a point of emphasis from now on. Gotta improve sometime I suppose.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Mold lines are a pain in the ass. I feel your pain on them. Gotta be in the right mood, otherwise i'll leave too much behind and they still show up, or I just follow a hasty scorched earth policy involving a lot of destroyed details.
He looks good, keep at it
88452
Post by: RobertsMinis
Things I have found that help getting mould lines. Do all the same pieces at the same time as the mould lines are the same on each bit. Also if you undercoat in white or grey, a thin black wash afterwards will point out any you missed.
44899
Post by: squall018
So I've been slowly plodding along on both Mordheim models, as well as Paradigm's space marine contest. Finished up my kit bashed Eversor. He fits in the space marine theme as I put him in power armor, and I am painting up three BA "handlers" to go with him. And because I said so! Anyways, what do you guys think? I honestly like my kit bashed model better than the official GW model, if I may brag just a little.
As always, comments always welcome! Thanks for looking, guys!

Really digging the Eversor, I like his little chain pistol (Needler IIRC?). Where does the cudgel arm come from?
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Oh yeah, looking at it again, I wanted to thank you for putting together a marine power armor without the shoulders and pack, painting it, and making it look good. I've always wondered if marines would look good like that but never gotten around to painting one in that form.
Seems like it would be a good way to repurpose them for another game, a less archaic and over-the-top looking power armor.
The assassin still looks tough and powerful, but not as clunky.

Post by: squall018
@ T.O.T. - I dislike the 32mm bases for a couple reasons. The main one is I just don't like change. But also, I just don't see the point. The 28mm were big enough for the entire history of the game... why aren't they anymore? Its not a big deal. I'm obviously still buying models but I just don't see the point. But YMMV, of course. The one advantage I will give them is in presents some better basing opportunities, since you have more area on the base now. @Grim, both arms are from the Tempestus Scions kit. They have the small shoulder pads to give them enough bulk that it didn't make the power armor look silly, but at the same time, I didn't want him to just look like a marine I painted black with a skull head.I greenstuffed the whole for the pack as well, so their wasn't a random divet in the back of his armor.

I'll admit, I wasn't entirely convinced when I saw the Eversor at first, but with paint on him he looks awesome! Very nice, the only thing I may have considered would be to give him a giant knife instead of the Scion "motivation stick" but that's just me.

Ok guys, so I finished up my entry for Paradigm's contest for March. Here are a few pics of my entry.
Finished it up today.
Yesterday I played in a 1k warhammer 40k tournament in Roanoke Va. I lost every single game, but still had a good time. Have never lost every game in a tourney before, so it was a humbling experience. That being said, we played on very small tables, and I didn't have anywhere to hide my guard from all the nasty close combat armies running around. Thats my excuse anyways.
First game was against an Ork battlewagon list. Didn't take any pictures.
2nd game I played against a Necron royal court list.
We're on the bottom table. The court is behind the piece of scenery. His reserves had not come in yet.
The third game I played against a Raven Gurad, centstar list. I got tabled. He only had three models on the table at the end, but that was enough. The game was a bloodbath and was by far my favorite game of the day.
I took a few more pictures, but you get the idea. Despite losing alot I had fun. I ran into an old friend from high school as well who I had no clue played warhammer, so hopefully found myself a new opponent. Good day overall.
Thanks for looking guys and feel free to comment.

The Eversor and his handlers look great!
Bad luck at the tourney, but if you had fun that that's what matters. On a side note, whenever I see batreps/game pics, I always find the lack of terrain (and specificaly LoS-blocking stuff) rather striking compared to my own games, but the more I see, the more I wonder if I'm the odd one out. Typically, I tend to use about twice the density on most of those tables. Do you find yourself happy with that (comparatively) little terrain, or do you reckon it's enough?
44899
Post by: squall018
I don't like a lot of terrain, as I find it just makes maneuvering a pain. These were 4x4 tables, and I thought it was plenty. Of course, I play a lot of IG, so I love open firing lanes.

Yeah games are really hard when there's not a great deal of cover on the board. Looks like there's a lot of open ground on those boards- good for tanks to get around, bad for your infantry.

So I've spent the past few nights painting up Mantic zombies and GW ghouls to a very basic table top standard. Nothing worth posting here. Just block colors and a wash. But I am gearing up for Paradigm's April painting contest. I have two choices I'm debating between. I have a Baneblade that I'm working on building when I'm not painting. I was thinking about using it and have some converted, beat up guardsmen I have as her crew, a la Fury. My other choice is a sentinel that I have soaking in simple green right now, and using one of said guardsmen as her pilot. The baneblade is a ton more work, and would have to be rushed a little to be ready by the end of the month. The sentinel wouldn't be quite as awesome, but I could spend a lot more time with its details. Thoughts? Also, NEW AVATAR!!! I saw some other guy around with one too similar to mine, so I changed it to the Ogryn peaking around the corner at you. I painted him, so no one else has this one!
43382
Post by: Archer
The Avatar works well. I would say do the Sentinel so you can truly lavish a ton of time into it without having to rush.
I also really like sentinels and imagine the pilots turn out pretty grizzled and veteran pretty damn quickly.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
I like the new Avatar.
I also vote for baneblade, but the sentinel would be easier to finish in time so that's your call
44899
Post by: squall018
I decided to just do the sentinel. Still working on building the baneblade, and there is just no way I would get it painted to a decent standard by the end of the month. So here is Captain Jenkins and his Sentinel, "Lucy" of the Baal 111th. I am going to try to make him look like he just came through a skirmish with some Orks, and use the model to learn how to do battle damage better. Thoughts?
I was able to head down to my games store yesterday and got a game of 40k in. My guardsmen got beaten by an Ork horde. Been on a bit of a losing streak lately. Oh well. I also bought some new models. Bought the Garden of Morr, some Empire swordmen, and some of the Dwarf Ironbreakers. Painted up a couple of them this morning. Probably going to make a dwarven warband for Mordheim out of them. Here is what I've done so far.
Will get to work on the Sentinel and pilot this week and will probably keep up some work on the dwarves since I have some momentum. Also, I hate to ask this, but if anyone could go into my gallery and throw a couple votes my way, I would sincerely appreciate it. They don't even have to be good votes. I would just like some honest feedback. Thanks for looking guys, and feel free to comment!

Nice stuff! Those newer Dwarves are pretty pricy if I recall, but do look very neat indeed! The Sent/pilot looks nice, especially the pose/composition on the latter!

Post by: GrimDork
I like the pilot's pose, but you know he's gonna get popped in the bean taking his helmet off like that
Dwarfs look good too! I'll try to stop by the gallery but no promises, the kiddo likes to sit with me at the computer and it makes doing computery things hard!

It was these Dwarfs that nearly swung me towards getting a Fantasy Dwarf force, just a bit too costly for me though. I really like the muted metallics, it gives them a nearly stone like appearance.

So my group is having another 40k tourney at the end of May, and I decided I wanted to bring some allies for my Guard. I had some Grey Knights lying around, so thought I may give them a try. With that in mind, I picked up a can of the new leadbelcher spray at my FLGS this past weekend. I was going for a very basic tabletop standard here. I think I achieved that and very quickly with the help of the new spray. What do you think guys?
Going to try to keep going with these for a few weeks, especially at the rate I think I will be able to pump them out. Its exciting being able to get stuff done so fast, this must be what you guys with an air brush feel like ALL the time!
77159
Post by: Paradigm
Very, very nice! I may need to look at getting this Leadbelcher spray when I get around to stripping the rest of my GK. I started with Runefang as the base last time, but I'll happily add an extra highlight layer to save time base coating the metal, always the slowest part. Like the bases too!
Got a list in mind for these guys?
44899
Post by: squall018
Not really, just going to paint what I have and kind of figure it out from there. I just wanted something different to go with my Guard.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Haha, sometimes the airbrush saves me time... sometimes I just shoot myself in the proverbial foot....
Grey knights look fine, I think its a pretty solid effort especially if it isn't taking you long. If you've just got them 'laying around' and intend them to be allies and not your primary force, you should feel totally justified in not breaking your back over them.
And they look solid anyway.
44899
Post by: squall018
Grim, I think fine is the perfect word for them. I was able to knock these three out in about two hours... which is just super quick for me. I'm usually pretty slow.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Three... those are terminators right? Not as familiar with GKs but yeah those are 40mm bases... anyway yeah three terminators in a couple of hours is pretty respectable and they work fine. May even make their parent force look cooler by comparison by being simpler, they're wingmen
43382
Post by: Archer
I think they look great when you consider the time spent and the end goal. You can always go back and do extra work of the inspiration seized later on and you have a top quality base to go from.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
I'm doing what Archer said myself. Getting solid tabletop out and someday I'm just gonna be in the mood and bust out a boatload of glowey eyes and gems and what have you. The GKs in a good place either way.

So I've been away for awhile. I've gotten super burnt out on warhammer. GW's policies have finally started to get to me, and the lack of balance in the game has made it less fun for me. I'm not quitting, I just needed a break...
That being said, a break from warhammer is not a break from miniatures or from table top gaming. I found Warmachine and have fallen head over heels in love. I have played every weekend for 5 weeks in a row now, and already have a few more games set up. So I've been working on building up Cygnar and Menoth forces. I've decided to play Cygnar at the upcoming Reckoning even at my FLGS. Here are a few pics of what I've been working on.
My Journeyman Warcaster
Some Stormguard
Reinholdt, My Merc
The Journeyman is my favorite. Spent the most time on him. Have a few more minis done that I will post later .Sorry for the long absence. Feels good to be back in the saddle.e Can't wait to see what some of you guys have been up to as well!

I hear you about gw/ 40k. I stepped off that train a good while back and never have had the impulse to get back on.
Can't get into warmahordes though, the aesthetic just doesn't do it for me, though I've heard it's a pretty tight game and good for competitive play. If I did play, Cygnar would probably be my top/second choice, so I look forward to your efforts
Everything in that vein so far is quite nice, the warcaster and his minions look good!

PP models are inferior to GW models in almost every way. The plastic isn't as good, I forgot how much I hate metal, and trying to convert them is very difficult. For those reasons alone, I will be keeping all my GW stuff, and still keep working on it.
But the game itself... its simply magic. Its what I wanted for all the years I played Warhammer and didn't even know it. Its fast, its tight, and the rules make sense. My favorite part about it, is if you suffer a bad alpha strike, or something goes awry early, you don't have to sit there and slug it out for three more hours knowing you're gonna lose. If you're down a significant amount, chances are they get you're caster and game over.
That being said, I'm not going to turn this into a GW bashing blog. I love GW for getting me into this hobby, and for making the best models on the market. I just am gonna play their game much more casually now, and probably stop with the tournaments.
@Angel - AvP has been on my radar. It would be much higher if Prodos had their stuff together. I will probably wait till they release it in plastic, as I don't paint well enough for the difference to be noticable in resin vs plastic, and plastic will hold up better while I'm playing the board game.

Looking good! The more muted tones definitely do those chaps a favour!
Cyngar are the one WM faction I would almost be tempted to start, as some of their character sculpts are superb (and cheap enough that I might get them at some point just to paint). It's the warjacks that put me off, though, I just can't get into that top heavy look.

True, there's lots of pics over in the AvP thread anyway if you want to take a look? Really beautiful stuff! The plastics will be coming out a few weeks after the KS pledges are done. As far as I'm aware, about 300-400 of them have gone out so far.

The squire.
This is the WIP Defender. He is the only Heavy Warjack in the list I'm currently running.

Spent most of today working on my Cygnar list. Started my Charger today. Thought it was finished, but after looking at the pictures, I need to do a few things to it. Also finished up the Defender I showed earlier. Also got my caster, Siege Brisbane, done as well.
First off, the Defender. This guy has served me well so far early in my Warmachine career.
Next is the Charger. This is my favorite warjack.
Finally, my warcaster.
And thats about it. Still have about ten more models to finish up in a little less than two weeks. I can do it, but I'm going to have to keep up this pace. Fortunately, I took the next two days off work, so plenty of time for painting. Thanks for stopping by, and feel free to comment.

So I got in three games of Warmachine today. Took a few days off work, and a friend came over with his Cephalyx contract Mercenaries to play against my Cygnar. I lost the first game with my normal caster. I switched it up and won the next two games with pStryker. His minis are painted beautifully, so take a look at them.
My warcaster and his "retinue".
My opponents caster and his monstrosities.
Things are going poorly for me here. Ended up losing on scenario
Off course, I didn't take as many pics of the games I won...

So I've been slowly plodding away at my warmachine stuff. I will have a fully painted army this Saturday for the event at my FLGS, so thats exciting. Here are a few of the character models I finished today.
First of, Gorman Di Wolfe, the alchemist.
And eHaley. I'm really pleased with how this came out.
And thats about it for now. Hopefully will have a few more pictures up later this week. Will definitely post some pictures from my games Saturday. thanks for looking guys and feel free to comment!

Characters do look nice. I like that alchemist, I be people are relieved when he throws open that cloak and it's just a stick grenade or potion they've got to worry about... (at least till they get hit). Such a funny pose to me. And the caster, that's a pretty blue. Looks like she's in the middle of calling down the thunder.

I am not a massive fan of most of the Warmachine sculpts. But that eHaley is great. I really like the contrast you have between the blue and the rest of her outfit. It is a nice complimentary scheme rather than some stark contrasting one.
44899
Post by: squall018
Thanks guys! I was very happy with how Haley came out, especially the cloak, which is the main part of the model if you ask me. So my FLGS had an event release event this Saturday for the release of the newest Warmachine book, Reckoning. I went 4-0 and came in second place. Got outscored by one point but thats ok. I had a TON of fun and met a few new people. Good stuff. Took a few pics I thought I would share. My army lined up against my opponent John's mercenary army. He is my most regular opponent so I knew what to expect from this list. John's army and his objective he made (the awesome cabin). Our press ganger's army with his home made objective. My caster after I just beat a circle of orboros army that was simply pwning me until I killed his caster. And finally, my prize for coming in 2nd / being the number one Cygnar player there. It was an awesome time. So I've been working on some kitbashes for Necromunda / Inq28. Will be back with them later this evening to show you what I've cooked up. Off to the pool right now though! Thanks for looking guys, and feel free to comment.

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai
Great to see that Warmahordes has seen you get your hobby back on, a change is as good as a rest and all that. I know very little about the game and miniature range but you are producing some very nice painting for them, the last two are especially good. Those blue robes on the Warcaster look great.
44899
Post by: squall018
@Para, I've seen Malifaux, but have never looked into it. The biggest problem would be a lack on interest in my area, as the hobby shop carries none of it, and I don't know anyone who plays. The models are certainly nice, however.
@T.O.T. Warmahordes has definitely rekindled my hobby drive. Had a blast playing it the past couple months and am already setting up games for next weekend.
With that being said, I'm gonna switch gears a little in this blog. I have most of my Cygnar stuff painted for warmachine, and as I've said all along, I still love GWs models and settings. So I;ve been messing around with some models for an Inq28 campaign. I have a few inquisitor and henchmen models I've made, but what I didn't have were any bad guys for them to fight against. So with that in mind here is what I came up with.
1st in a Chaos Lord on a Khorne Juggernaut. I wanted to make him look mean, but not over the top. Like he is a big fish in a small pond. If this were a movie, this is the guy the inquisitor would kill in the opening scene to show how awesome he is. Thats why he isn't totally decked out in armor, nor does he have the best weapons. I hope this makes sense. Anyways, on to the model.
Next up is another Chaos model. My FLGS is having an " HQ Thunderdome event" in two weeks. Pretty much, you buy an HQ model, build and paint him, and then fight it out on a 3 x 3 table with three other people. You get points for doing different things, and at the end of three rounds we declare a winner. There are some rules, like no named characters, 125pt limit, and nothing over 40mm base size. This is what I come up with. I will use him for this, and then also in my Inq28 campaigns. Need to come up with a name for him. Now keep in mind, he is still rough, I just built him this morning. I need to clean mold lines, and fill in some gaps with green stuff, but you will get the idea from these pics I hope.
And thats all I've got. Thoughts? Would love to hear comments about the builds and ideas on paint schemes.

The juggerlord is awesome. I see what you mean about him not being endgame tier geared out... but he still looks fething badass. The pose with the aimed pistol and everything else is spot on. Looks kind of like a cowboy whose horse is just kind of sauntering and he's got that cocky leaned back a bit posture.. really works. Paint him red, khorne is easy
That other guy though.. damn. He's got some kind of mega-quato going on and it's freaking creepy as gak. I love it Add to that the creepy nurgle helmet, fearsome chain-bladed combi melta, and the mace... just for the 'it may just knock you out so you can have the distinct honor of waking up later as you're devoured by my giant belly head/mouth'... creepy creepy dude. Good work

Yeah, I'm really pleased with how the Nurgle lord came out. I initially was going to use the ogre head as a trophy, but as I was finding a place to hang it I realized it fit right on the stomach. I'm gonna green stuff around it to make it look a little more "natural". But I think it worked pretty well.

So I spent some time tonight cleaning up the nurgle lord. Cleaned up some mold lines and did some green stuffing. Also got him primed. While green stuff, and later primer, dried I decided to make a few more Inq28 models. I've been reading the faction lists and this gave me a few ideas of minis. I'm just kind of throwing stuff together right now, but soon I'll get down to the nitty grtitty of making actual, cohesive warbands. Until then, check some of these guys out. My rouge trader. Need to come out with some background / fluff, but I usually find I just try to make cool looking models, and then come up with stories as I'm painting. So I'll figure some of that stuff out later. This guy is a noble of some kind. In my head, he's ex IG who was gifted nobility on a small, backwater planet for his service. Stole the idea for this model from PDF's awesome Inq28 blog. Last is a mutant / Scavvy. Gonna start throwing some paint around soon, but what do you guys think of the builds?

So I went to visit my mother this weekend. I went to the new FLGS in town with some of my home town buddies. I played a game of warmachine (and got destroyed) but I also got to play the new Age of Sigmar game. It wasn't fun. It could have been possibly, but despite the fact that we tried to make somewhat even lists, they weren't at all. Its going to take some work to make the game fun, which may or may not defeat the purpose. While I was there I picked up a copy of the WD with the rules and free mini, and got two more of the free minis (other people didn't want theirs). And while I didn't have the best time playing, the minis are simply stunning. There are no other words for it. I'm going to buy the box next weekend just to paint. I may play the game every once in awhile, but I simply have to have the minis. So thats just my humble opinion on the matter that has made the gaming part of the internet explode the past couple days. But no one comes here to read my opinion, they come to see models! I built two of the three guys I had. One the "right" way and one with a head swap. I'm thinking about trying to make a BA termie out of the 3rd one. Here are the two I have built so far.
This is a pretty early WIP of the first model. Going to try to use GW's exact color scheme. Even using the guide in the white dwarf. I'm going to go with a silver and green scheme with the other guy. Will post more pics when I get him done tonight.
So what are you guy's thoughts on the game and minis so far? Good? Bad? I think it has some potential for small, cinematic games, but its going to take some work. We'll see how it goes.

Looking good! I'm planning something similar with head swaps to get a more varied look, so glad to see it works!
Personally, I really like what we've seen so far of both the game and the minis.

Looks like a good effort so far. I can tell you that as a former empire player, that new aesthetic does literally *nothing* for me. Look about like you could stick a power pack on them and run them as blood angels though so I'm sure they'll make great conversion fodder
Thanks for sharing!

Nice work on the Liberator. I think I may end up doing mine in a Dark Angels sort of scheme- so Green, Bone white and Red.

Done and done. @paradigm, the head swap works great with any space marine head, as they have the same ball socket for it to fit into. That's the only easy conversion with this model. The shoulder pads are in two halves, so you can do much with them. You can replace the shield arm pretty easily, but the hammer would have to go too if you do that. @Grim, they are definitely just fantasy space marines, but I love space marines, so I guess its why I like them. I just wish there was a little MORE to the game they are a part of. @AoV, They will work pretty well for termies. There are plenty of nice, flat surfaces to glue insignia onto. I am going to do a BA one myself. Anyways, here is the finished product.

Ok, painted the second of my Sigmarites with a different color scheme. I don't like this one as much. It was quicker to do, but the whole time I was painting it, I just knew it wasn't as good as the first one. Oh well, can't win em all. Anyways, here he is.
Super early WIP of my last color scheme. Going for a darker scheme with a bone color to contrast the dark armor. This is super early, still alot of layers to go, but you can see where I'm going (I hope).
Last in a WIP of the ex-guardsman noble. He is about 80% done. Pretty happy with how he is turning out so far.
And thats about it. Going to finish up the Sigmarites this week, as well as work on my Inq28 stuff. My wife is going out of town tomorrow for a few days, so I imagine production is about to increase quite a bit. Thanks for looking guys, and feel free to comment!

Huh yeah I think the original sigmarine is the best, though both of the other schemes are totally fine, that one just seems to better capture the spirit of the model. Veteran is cool too. The arms seem a bit long but kitbashing can do that to you, still looks really neat.

You know I actually prefer the gold and blue scheme the least. Don't get me wrong, it's nicely done. But I just don't like those colors. Actually prefer the second one the most closely followed by the Space Marine Chaplain look.
Absolutely love the Noble. Great kit bashing and since I already have all of the parts you used (I think) I may be requesting permission to steal the idea for future use.

I think I will like the dark and bone colored Sig the best.

So I got a copy of Osprey's new game Frostgrave. Its pretty much Mordheim with a lot more wizards. I have plenty of Mordheim guys, so had plenty of basic minis but needed more wizards. Also made a few of the specialist characters. Have a few more to make. Will be working on this, AoS, and Inq 28 for the foreseeable future. Anyways, on to the pics.
First is some of the boring stuff. Made some objective markers / treasure tokens.
Next up is a wizard (not sure what type yet) and an apothecary.
This guy will be a wizard's apprentice. He isn't quite done.
Next a sigilist and apprentice
Finally, a thief and another wizard.
And that's what I've been up to lately. Been playing quite a bit of warmachine and actually getting some Mordheim in as well, but this has been all the painting / modelling I've gotten done so far this week. Thanks for looking guys and feel free to comment.

The progress is cool. I dig the purple robes on the wizard. The apprentices look suitably meek compared to their masters great job on that.

I've been running a Reiklander Mercs band. I've been teaching two of my Warmachine buddies how to play, so we've just played a couple one off games so far. They are begging me to start a campaign, so I guess I've got them hooked.

The WM games look great - good to hear you went well and congrats on the Cygnar award as well. The Khorne and Nurgle Lord builds look great and Nurgle guy came up great in the end - I didn't pick up on the gut-head until I saw the painted/finished version pics. That's one trippy Rogue Trader. Frostgrave conversions look good. I'm on the fence about the game, I'll wait and see what you guys think of it!

So I spent this morning working on more Frostgrave models. Got a few done and plenty of work on others. Thought I would throw up a few pics of what I've gotten done.
Treasure markers!!!! Ok, maybe not that exciting, but important nonetheless.
A wizard, most likely a Necromancer, perhaps a witch.
And finally a worm for the encounters table.
That's it, hope to have a few more up later tonight.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Nice worm. The caster is pretty cool, in heavy armor with a dramatic cape, but still obviously a spell caster. His oversized left hand reminds me of the Pale Master prestige class from 3rd edition D&D, where you would eventually replace a limb with an undead graft, could paralyze people like a ghoul's touch etc. Very creepy guy, good colors, would be at home leading some marauders/cultists, as well as miscellaneous undead. Have you had a chance to play yet? I'm thinking for 12 bucks the kindle version of the corebook seems like a decent purchase on the off chance it's good, always wanted to play something mordheimy.

Wow, so its been awhile. I have actually been painting and playing a ton, more than ever actually. All warmachine, all the time. Painted quite a bit, but I tend to speed paint my warmachine stuff, and while its not awful, its not worth writing home about either. I want to get into some Inquisimunda stuff and so broke out some of my GW stuff. Bought this guy from my FLGS awhile back and figured I would paint him up to use as a leader of a chaos cult or something. Experimented with a couple things on this model, including darker flesh tones and the axe blade. Overall I like him.
Had a lot of fun with this guy over the last two evenings. Going to try to make it a point to post more. Maybe even put up some of my better Warmachine models. Thanks for looking and feel free to comment!

So I'm still working on Inquisimunda stuff. I'll even put up some WIP later today as well as the scale picture I promised but forgot about for AoV. But I finished off a model last night I was pretty proud of so thought I would post it. I have a few days off work so production has amped up. Even got two gams of warmachine yesterday. Anyways, less talk, more pictures.
Will get more picture up later. Also, I just found this game called This is not a Test thanks to Grim's blog. May have to make a couple models for that too today.

Agreed, really good work on the skin, armour and cloth there Squall. TINAT (is that the abbreviation?) does seem like a very interesting rule set, I like some of the miniatures produced for it as well.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Nice mini! Is that one of those "trollbloods" I keep hearing about from Hordes?
I believe the most typical abbreviation is TNT, Thraxas. At least it's what I'm going with. Sorry if you got hooked Squall, but I blame Carlos13th for pointing out the impending rulebook kickstarter that got me looking into the game in the first place. Hobbying was cheaper before I was on Dakka
44899
Post by: squall018
Yeah, Grim, that is a Trollblood. Not my main army, but the model was too cool not to paint.
As far as TNT goes, I am definitely going to do the KS. It will be my first KS that I have done (besides going on for a dollar) since Dungeon Saga, so as long as it goes better than that I will be pleased.
So first off, here is the scale picture AoV asked for over a week ago. Like I said, the guy is a giant, even compared to space marines. Scale creep is real. Like, super duper real.
Next up is a scout / ranger for Inquisimunda. He could also see work in TNT or Necromunda. He can just be whatever. I like him though.
Lastly is a space marine scout for inquisimunda as well. I used marine legs to make him larger than a normal human, as even scouts have undergone some of the space marine training / surgery etc, so I thought he should be bigger. I used a scout body and shotgun, a grey knight head, and the shield I got from a buddy. I will probably shave some of the BA insignia off his legs and make him from another chapter, as I have plenty of BA stuff already. Also need to clean up some of the cuts I made on the gun. Anyways, You'll get the idea.
May get some more stuff up depending on how my day goes. If my wife wants to go to the brewery this evening though, this will be it till later this weekend. Thanks for looking and feel free to comment guys!

Never complain if the wife wants to take you to the brewery .
Really like the two kitbashes, the Skitarii head is especially good on the free company body. Some great pieces on those kits for post apocalyptic/zombie/ near future miniatures.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
I like the modified scout, I prefer space marines with less chunky shoulderbits. Does the scout have a bow in addition to a rifle/gun of some kind? Definitely doesn't want to be caught unarmed does he?
67097
Post by: angelofvengeance
Just looked at the pic of that Slaughter Priest, wow he's a big lad! No scale creep though, Squall. The fluff describes them as towering figures, living beacons of Khorne's will.

Heh. Those war machine skeletons with the powerfist type things are really cool.
EDC
44899
Post by: squall018
AoV- He may be big in the fluff, but he is ridiculously tall as a mini. I like him a lot, but I wish he was just a tad more in line with the rest of their minis. Oh well.
@ EDC, Thanks. They are mostly just a lot of layers of washes.
So I finished off some purestrain genestealers while I'm waiting on my cultists. I hope to have them by the end of the week. I wanted to go with all blacks, whites, and grays but added some green to the carapace at the end to make it a little more interesting. I'm going to try to do the same kind of things with my cultists.
And also, to prove that I'm working on it, here is a very early WIP on my space marine scout. I have actually NEVER painted an ultramarine before, so I thought I would give it a go. As I said, this is very early.
Thanks for looking everyone.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Nice stuff. Between you and Paradigm, I'm really getting fond of a light flesh and black carapace for the stealers. Would mean you could use more pallid/grey tones for the cultists' flesh as well. Neat. Taking notes, I want to get these eventually.
Ultra looks like a good start.
44899
Post by: squall018
I saw Paradigms stealers and thought they were super cool so I tried my hand at it. You could say he heavily inspired me. You could also say I blatantly stole his idea. Both sentences would be true. I do like the idea of having very pallid skin on the cultists. I think of them being underground based on everything I've read in the fluff (mostly Ciaphas Cain novels) so it would make sense.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
It's a good scheme what deserves to be ripped off, plus there's enough differences between execution that the schemes aren't duplicates. The acid green spot color is a nice bonus.
When/if I get the cultists (forget the main box, don't need more space marines and don't have time to part things out and resell) I'll probably be blatantly ripping both of you off

Post by: squall018
So I've been out of town the last few days so haven't got much done. I've been working some today though, after finally getting back home. I don't have anything done yet but thought I'd show a few WIP shots. I got my cultists in the mail Friday before I left so started on those. Also, been working on my scout.
Here are a couple cultists with their base coats mostly done and some wash on some of them. Trying to make the color scheme match the genestealers I made earlier, so I'm sticking with lots of grays, blacks, and whites with green as my main color. Hopefully it will work as well on the cultists as it did on the purestrain stealers. I'm going to brighten the green up, don't worry!
Here are a couple of the cultists. I did some basic head swaps. Now they can be cultists or just regular soldiers in other games such as TNT or whatever.
Finally, here is a picture of the scout. Slowly but surely coming together.
Hoping to have some of these guys done tonight. Will post pics if I finish.

Ok so its been awhile. Seven months since I last posted. While that may lead you to believe I have been out of the hobby, nothing could be further from the truth. I have been gaming almost non stop, which while fun, has simply taken up much of my painting time. I have been on the craziest warmachine kick known to man. Its one of my favorite games of all times, but to be honest, the models do not inspire me to paint that much. The rules are top of the line... models... ehhh...
That being said, I have gotten back into 40k a little bit with all the deathwatch / genestealer / kill team/ board games that have been going on. GW is starting to impress me. Ive also been converting up and slowly painting models for the game This is Not a Test. I will be giving that its first try in a few weeks. Anyways, enough yammering. ON to the pictures.
So I made my own Deathwatch Kill Team. I have TONS of blood angels lying about, but I wanted to use these exclusively for kill team games, so I took my first shot at true scale marines. Its cliché, but I like them and think marines look like they should this way. My FLGS is taking part if GW's kill team campaign coming up soon, so I have some motivation.
Its hard to see the shoulder pads, but I tried to go non cliché. For example, the Librarian looking guy has a crimson fist shoulder pad, and the guy with the assault jump pack is an ultra marine. The guy with the flame thrower is a salamander... can't win em all.
And one for scale with an inquisitorial henchman I kit bashed.
Next is just a simple head swap conversion. This guy is super generic and can be used as a lot of things. Main purpose now will be for This is not a Test.
And finally, my attempt at a Chaos Spawn. This is very early WIP, so don't judge too harshly...
So I'm going to try to start keeping back up with this blog more. At least once a week. I don't have it in me to paint as fast as Paradigm and Thraxis, but I'm gonna at least try to get back to a steady pace as quite frankly, I've missed being on Dakka and keeping up with everyone's blogs like I used to. As always guys, thanks for stopping by and feel free to comment.

He is a crimson fist psyker. Just to be different, no other reason. I'm going to paint the cloak the dark red of their color scheme and I think that will look cool with the black power armor.
Bretonnian bits are the best for 40k conversions.

Welcome back Squall!! 7 Months is far too long, at least you have been busy.
Warmachine miniatures are very much Marmite, but most systems are.
I love the mix of the Deathwatch bodies and Grey Knight Terminator(I assume?) legs, it adds a real presence to them. The Inquisitorial henchmen and TNT kit bash are excellent as well.
Have you laid any paint on the Sector Imperialis bases yet? They do look a little shallow.
Anyway great to have you back, everyone should paint at their own pace. It is your hobby after all.
44899
Post by: squall018
Thraxis, they are Grey Knight Termie legs. I just bought the bases for this projects. They are the same cheaper plastic they use in their newer terrain, but they are not bad TBH. I feel like they will look good with paint. We shall see soon!
So one more photo dump for the night. Built a little bit more and did some more painting.
Put a few more layers on this guy.
This was my 1st attempt at a true scale deathwatch marine. I have not shown him yet. He is pretty close to done, but I need to pick out a few more details.
Added this guy to my kill team as well. Got the model for 5$ so I sacrificed him to the kit bashing alter. I like him.
Next, some Sisters of Silence
Finally, got some early paint on the Crimson Fist Librarian.
And that's about it. Thanks for looking guys!

Thanks Genom! Glad you like it here.
So I finished up two of the deathwatch marines this evening. I also am super close to finishing up the spawn but he is not quite done. I will post more pictures once he is.
Now I just need to think up some cool fluff for these guys.
And that's it for now. I want to get a squad of ten made, come up with some fluff, and then play some kill team with them. Maybe even do a mini campaign like I saw on mini wargaming recently. Or just do an inquisimunda type campaign and come up with some awesome enemies for these guys to face.

Post by: squall018
So I spent the last 6 days up in Wisconsin, so that's my excuse for not posting in a week or so. I have some painting going on but nothing really worth showing yet. While I was letting stuff dry I built some true scale Chaos Marines so my Death Watch would have some appropriate bad guys to fight. I have made 4 so far and have the parts to make one more. I wanted to paint some differ color schemes so I made them all from different legions.
Black Legion
World Eaters
Death Guard
1k Sons
So the Thousand Son is my least favorite. His staff is kind of position oddly, but that's the only way I could make it work. The World eater is my favorite. He is made up from five different kits. I will have some more painted Death Watch up soon, then will get to work on these as well.
I have one more marine to make. Any suggestions for the legion? I'm down for anything but Iron warriors as I already have some of those. Thanks for looking guys and feel free to comment.

That being said, I did finish up the Chaos Spawn I started. I am pretty pleased with how he came out. Definitely very "nurgly" looking, which is what I was going for.
And that's that. He is from the Chaos war alter kit. Added a little bit of green stuff where I needed but pretty simple, really. Thanks for looking and feel free to comment.

The BlackTemplar looks great, and excellent work on the Black Legion as well. I love a good kit bash where your eyes are drawn to it again and again with the lightbulb of ",oh, that bit is from that kit, and that bit is from that kit". Cracking stuff.

Thanks T.O.T. I have been having a lot of fun building these guys.
Built a few more marines. The first is going with the rest of the Deathwatch. He is a Flesh Tearer. I'm not really a fan of him. I tried to make him in an action pose running forward... and instead he look's like he is just about to fall over. But here he is, dammit!
And here is an Iron Hand I showed earlier that I finished up.
Last up is another model I just built. Forgot to take a picture before I started painting. I decided to paint this guy as a Dark Angel instead of a Death watch, just so I had a little variety depending on what I was trying to do. Not every Inquisitor is gonna have a pack of Deathwatch marines in tow. Anyways, this is very early WIP and just some blocking going on.. But I need some help. I wanto to make this guy look dirty. Some hard weathering. What is the best way to do this besides just slinging some GW texture paint on him? I have struggled iin the past maki8ng weathering look natural. Thoughts?
And that's it for today, guys and gals. I Hope everyone has a good Thanksgiving and thanks for looking!

Still working on models for my kill team and the Chaos marines, but nothing to show. I also picked op a copy of Blood Bowl yesterday from my FLGS. Everyone wants to play Orks and Skaven so I figured I would give the human team a go. Here is my test model. Pretty happy with how he came out, and I think I'm gonna stick with this scheme. Now I just have to learn how to play...
Not sure how the numbering system and positions and all that work yet, so I'm not going to paint any numbers or anything until I figure it out. Will add that stuff once I get a handle on the game.

So Blood Bowl kind of fell by the wayside in my area, so I have gone back to playing warmachine heavily. Good times, but not much to show off. While at my FLGS this weekend I stumbled across 7 original Delaque gang members from Necromunda for 30 bucks, including two heavy weapons. This rekindled my excitement for Necromunda, which while I don't play often, I love modelling and painting figures for. That led to a flurry of activity over the last few days, including this Van Saar gang I made out of the new Genestealer Neophyte kit with some head swaps and a few arm swaps. Pretty basic but they get the job done. Let me know what you think.
First up, three gangers with autoguns. Still need to finish the bases on these guys but they are done enough.
These two will be juves. They don't look small enough, but at least they don't have facial hair like the rest of the gang. That will have to do.
The guy on the right will be the leader. On the left, another ganger.
Another ganger and a heavy.
A ganger with a flamer and I'm not sure what the guy on the right will be. Just liked the parts.
And a WIP juve.
Like I said, these are pretty simple conversions, but its obvious what they are supposed to be which is what counts. Thanks for looking guys and feel free to comment.

So its been about two years since Ive posted on here. Not quite but close. Just so happens I have a kid about the same age. He has taken up a lot of my time and while I have still been painting and gaming, I haven't been keeping up with this blog. I am going to try to do a better job of that. So back when I last posted I was converting a Van Saar gang prior to the announcement of N17. Well they are finished up. And since I never cut the genestealer iconography off they have been getting double duty in games of Kill Team as legit GSC. First pics are the original gang then the extra models I used to make a GSC.
And now the legit GSC models.
The light is washing some of the color out. I have moved to a new place so am going to have to learn to take pictures in the new space so bare with me. Anyways, welcome back. This blog has always been a bit all over the place and to be honest will continue to be that way. I have been painting and playing quite a bit during my hiatus so have quite a bit of content coming. Thanks for looking and feel free to comment.

Thanks, Kestral. I started the Van Saars before the new Necromunda was announced but I have found plenty of use for them.
While I have been playing Necromunda and Kill Team I have also had a blast playing Shadespire. Here are a couple of my painted warbands to go along with the orks I posted earlier.
I was able to win a shadeglass with the dwarves. I have also won one with the Thorns and will be posting them soon!

Here are a few more of the Shadespire warbands I have painted up. These are great little projects as I can usually get a warband done in a couple days.
Will post some more in a few days as well as the latest BB team I have been working on!

Another warband I had painted up and won a glass trophy with. This is actually the warband I won my first tournament with. The Thorns are probably my favorite warband to play with.

So I, like many others, have bought into the contrast paint craze. Me and a buddy went to the FLGS yesterday and bought 9 or 10 pots each and just shared paints for the day so we had a lot of the colors. These models are just test models so need a few touch ups but here is what I came away with after a couple hours of messing around. Please excuse some of the gak spots / missed areas.Need to go back and touch up but I was just messing around yesterday and seeing what I could do.
First up the obligatory pox walker. This is over a krylon white primer
Next an imperial fist. This is over wraith bone
A black templar over lead belcher
I have a few more I will post later. Overall I am pretty impressed with the contrast paints. While I think I can produce better results using regular paints, the time they save is pretty amazing. I think they will be great for laying down base coaats and for models you want to paint in really bright colors. I don't think they will work as well for a more grimdark style.

Been messing around with these contrast paints more. The more I use them the more I like them. Especially how much faster I can paint with them. I wont use them all the time, but when I need to knock out something quick for a game these will be my go to.
Here is a gatorman from PP's Hordes
and here are some ur-ghuls from BSF. These guys took maybe 5 minutes if you don't count drying time and look board ready to me
Next up is a converted Lizardman team for Blood Bowl using the contrast paints. Should have some progress from that in the next few days.

Post by: squall018
As promised, here is what I have done of my Blood Bowl lizardman team. I am going to a tournament in Va Beach called the ACCC in about a month and I am considering playing with them. Have the Saurus coming in the mail as I type this. I painted 5 of the skinks last night. Contrast is super fast and looks fine from 3 ft away. I said it earlier, I am capable of painting better using traditional methods, but there is something satisfying about being able to bang out passable models so quickly.

Been having a lot of fun with these paints. Just knocking out random models I have lying around.
This guy is probably my favorite so far.
and a tyrranid just because
One thing I don't like about these paints is I seem to notice itty bitty spots I missed in the picture that are barely evident when I go back and look for them on the model. Saw 3 or 4 on the Gellarpox just now. Gonna go touch him up now. That being said, that took me 30-40 minutes and that's not bad for that sized model.

So here is a wizard I painted up for Frostgrave / ROSD. Simple model, simple paint scheme. I like how he turned out.

Wow, nice!!!

Post by: squall018
Thanks, guys! The face of the wizard did come out really well. The contrast paints do skin nicely. I think its one of their strengths.
Next I painted up a pink horror. Heard demons were getting Kill Team rules next week so I figured why not.

Your work with the contrast is really showing what it can do. I need to get some of the skin tone ones soon.

The skin tones are some of the best of the paints IMO. Which is a nice transition to my next post! Been reading a lot about warcry, and the Godsworn Hunt look a lot like the Beast guys from the starter set of Warcry, so I grabbed one and got to painting. This guy was already primed with a krylon white ultra flat primer, so isn't using the "official" primers but it looks good to me!
and another shot just sitting on my desk right after I finished him, so he is still wet here,
Until next time, folks!!

That skin is gorgeous, the sword is really nice too.

Post by: squall018
Thanks, Theo! The skin is just straight fireslayer flesh. The sword is just PP's pig iron with very thin watered down templar black, used almost like a wash.

Thanks, Captain Brown!!
So I painted up another of The Godsworn Hunt. Stuck with the same scheme, as I think I am going to use them with the Untamed Beasts that come in the Warcry starter box. I don't know if they can have bows or not but its still fun to paint either way. And if I decide to play the GSH in Underworlds then they will be painted! Birds... meet stone!
I think I will just finish off this warband over the next week or so. I am also working on a Skaven BB team by Willy miniatures. I have a BB tourney in Newport News next weekend and am trying to get them ready for that. I may show them off but TBH they are not coming out well. The minis are beautiful but small and my color scheme is dark and is not bringing out the details. Will show them when more are ready... I only have 4 of 12 done so I will be busy with them next week. This week Im getting a game of KT tomorrow night and Necromunda Saturday. Good hobby week!

Now for a little bit of a changeup. Im going to NOVA for the first time this year and will be taking place in the Necromunda narrative event they are having. This is for N17 which I have less experience with than the original, but I figure it will still be fun. Got my first 4 guys painted up. Going to paint an Ambot and a couple hangers on to go with them. I don't know how the event works yet, but I figure I will just paint up a bunch of options and between everything I will be able to make a legal list. Also open to gang names if anyone has anything clever.

Now back with more contrasty goodness. The 3rd member of the Godsworn Hunt. With the new Bar list for Underworlds released today, I have been thinking about taking these guys to the Grandclash at NOVA. It will be either them, Mollogs Mob, or the Thorns, as those are the warbands I feel the most comfortable with.

Almost picked these guys up today. Great looking work with the contrast, that blue is fantastic.
I’m down to just needing Godsworn, Mollog, and the Profiteers. Of course Dreadfane, Beastgrave and all of third season are right around the corner .

If you care about the cards Mollog and The Hunt should come first of the three IMO. If you just want cool models, well... IMO the order stays the same!
So I knocked out 2 more members of the GSH. I tried some new stuff with these and am not a fan. Oh well, its why we are testing. Below the are two plaguebearers for a Daemon KT. Figured I had the white dwarf with the rules and the models so why not. They are going along with my horror up above. The plaguebearers are about 60% contrast. I put some browns splotched around the skin on the primers to give them some depth, then went over the whole thing with plaguebearer flesh. The blood angel red for the red bits, then a regular yellow paint for the pustules. Then just washed the whole thing down with agrax. Works well enough for me.

Thanks Squall, the Godsworn hunt will be the next band I buy, mollog and the profiteers are the lowest on my list. The cards might tilt Mollog higher, plus bat-squig.
New guys are looking good, I love the blue hair plumes.

So I finished up the Godsworn Hunt. Really pleased with how they turned out. These will hopefully be able to be used in Warcry as well.
Also here is a picture of my Grey Knight Kill Team. This is the main Kill Team I play with and while Grey Knights aren't great in KT, but I do enjoy participating the psychic phase.

Great looking guys, I like your color choices on them, possibly even more so then the studio colors. I’ve seen the models first hand in the shop and I like these iron golems A LOT, but I can only afford one specialist game and I’m already deep into Warhammer Underworlds .

What a great Segway into my next post! You can use a lot of the Underworlds warbands to make Warcry warbands. The Thorns make up half of the below Nighhaunt warband. Going to bring these guys to the demo day at my FLGS next Saturday in case anyone wants to play but hasn't bought in yet. Easier to rope people in with painted models!!
The Sepulchral Guard pretty much form a warband if you add a Necromancer. The Farstriders make up the core of a Stormcast warband. Just get a gryph hound or two and you are good to go! All of the gitz are useable. That's kind of what drew me in, as those underworlds models can get double duty in Warcry.

Blimey Squall, you are smashing through the Warcry starter at an amazing rate. I like the choice of colours on your Iron Golem warband, looks really good. They are such good sculpts as well.
Glad to hear that you are enjoying the game as well, I have seen people both praising and complaining about its apparent simplicity.

Yeah, I was trying to get through as much of it as possible as we were having a demo day at my FLGS and I was trying to have multiple painted warbands and as much painted terrain as I could pull off. We had 9 or 10 people show and play so it was a pretty good day.
WIP of the untamed beasts. These are 90% done. Need to pick out a few details and finish the bases. Also need to go back and fill a couple white spots I always seem to leave with contrast paints.
Hobby progress will be slow as I will spend most of my free time moving my hobby room to the basement. Second kid will be arriving soon so hobby room will be the new nursery. Fortunately I have a fully finished basement so its not too much of a downgrade.

Congrats on kid 2 coming .
Basement hobby space is always good, until you mess up your leg or back and can’t navigate the steps (my current situation). Although it being downstairs means it’s even further out of sight, so need to clean it up because of company happen a less.
Great progress, I’m really liking your work with the contrast paints.

Alright. Im back after close to a month hiatus. Got the hobby room moved into the basement and the nursery set up for kid 2. Still been playing some Warcry and enjoying it. Been playing a decent amount of Blood bowl lately which brings me to the point of this post. I recently finished up my Nurgle BB team The Glob Trotters. I also played up at the NOVA Open recently and will be posting about my experience there soon once I get all my pictures together. Anyways, on to the photos!
Will have my NOVA report and some other WIP teams up soon. Also, more Warcry sooner than later.

Thanks, Youwashock. I was pretty pleased with how they came out. I think they look better in person. I still don't have a great setup for pictures.
Next Ive been working on my Halfling team. This is the team I play as when Im teaching newer players. Everyone has more fun beating on the Halflings!
Without further ado, the first painted members of The Halfing Heroes!
Have some Treemen lined up as well since GW didn't make any with this release. Will post pics of the whole team when they are done. Second child is due tomorrow so can come any day so who knows when I will be able to post again but hopefully soon!

Halflings looking great . Do they come with the bandaged hand and face or is that your handiwork?
Not satisfied with painting short oddshaped humans that only want to eat you and your wife decided to scratchbuild another one . Congratulations on the impending lack of sleep and nonstop crying (yours as I’m sure the baby will be perfect ).

That's the plan so far, CB. Though maybe someday soon I will be foolish enough to try them at a tournament!!
Theo they come with the bandages on them. Im not much for greenstuff except to fill in gaps.
So been still working on BB teams but nothing really to show. I am starting a Warcry campaign tomorrow. This was decided Thursday morning so I had two days to get a warband ready. Now, most people would use that Iron Golem warband or something they already had done since there was only 2 days to get it done. I decided to do a flesheater courts warband. Now, I had about 1/2 of this one done. I had all the small guys painted but needed to both build and paint the three big guys. Well, Contrast to the rescue. SO the small guys were part of my Vampire Counts army from back in the day. The Crypt horrors were going to be but I never got around to them so I got to work yesterday morning between taking care of my toddler, newborn, and wife. Tonight at appx. 10pm they are done. Love contrast! Also took a picture of my campaign roster sheet... just cause.
I will post pics of the games tomorrow night. First game will be against The Unmade!!!

So I finished up my Halfling team last week and took them to a tournament in Va Beach. Went 1-1-1 and came in 10th of 20 coaches. Not too shabby with Halflings. I used contrast for the tree on the left as I had to rush and it shows. The tall player is my conversion of the star player Karla Von Kill. Just a human lineman with an Escher head but it works!
I present The Halfling Heroes!!

So I have actually been painting quite a lot lately and just haven't been posting much. Going to rectify that and get some of the backlog up on the blog this weekend. For starters, here is The Hulk from the new Marvel game.
Came out pretty well, IMO. Thanks for looking everyone!

I'm liking the green on the Hulk, nice and vibrant. The whole model has a "comic book look" to it, which I think is appropriate. At first I was thinking that the white lines on the base could be toned down a bit, but on a second thought it fits quite well with the rest of the palette.

I have very little interest in either the Marvel or D.C World's but for some reason the Crisis Protocol stuff has piqued my interest. Hulk looks great, is the base the one supplied or one you created? Also please tell me that you have M.O.D.O.K...?

Here are a few more of the Crisis Protocol models. I have been kind of just blasting through these so they aren't the best paint jobs but I am having a lot of fun with them.
First up some of the terrain. These were just hit real quick with contrast but came out well enough,
Next up is red skull. His face has a little more depth in real life that I couldn't get to show on my camera. You get the idea!
And finally Iron Man.
Will keep working on these. Also have Ultron and Black Widow painted, just need to take pictures. I think next will be Doc Oc and CrossBones. Thanks for looking everyone!

Thanks, Guys! Captain Brown my halfling team has actually done decently, going 1-1-1 in the tournament I took them to. Lost to Goblins, Tied, Necromantic and beat Orcs. That was a fun day!
I haven't done anymore with my Marvel but I have been working on models. First up is a Khorne Blood Bowl team I working on. A little over half way done with this team. This is about 90% contrast paint.
Looking at the picture I need to go back and pick out the teeth and eyes on the bloodletters, but they are getting there.
Next up are a few traitor guardsmen for my cultist necromunda gang.
That's about it for now. Will post more as I get it done. Thanks for looking everyone!
