Question for next month: I know we said no proxies for Lords of War, but I'll be repainting all my marines after this coming weekend, so I'd like to take the opportunity to play a fun iron hands list, and I've had my eye on the fellglaive for awhile. Problem is the fellglaive isn't 40k legal, only 30k. HOWEVER, it is the same chassis as the fellblade, which is BAO legal, th eonly difference is the turret. So would it be ok to run this:
as this:
Not gonna buy one if not as it would be a waste to buy a model I can't use.
Thanks guys.

If I blow it up, can I loot it?
And yaeh thats a very simple count as. Just make sure you tell the opponent the turret it different like 3 times before the game. And paint it nice. And no one will have any issues at GE

The rules for 30k and 40k don't really mesh that well. FW states that pretty clearly in the HH books.
I would be completely opposed to the introduction of 30k to 40k events. I would be completely in favor of 30k specific events.

I am making pretty good progress on my guys. I have decal paper but the image I was planning to use doesn't scale down well into small decals for shoulder pads even though it's a PNG file it still gets fuzzy because there is too much detail. Hey Everyone,
I'd like to bring up a topic for mulling over as a possible slight rule change. Nothing for this month, just starting a topic of discussion. LoWs. I think we have a pretty good handle on them, thanks to the BAO restrictions and the VP for every 3 HP/wounds. However GW has started the trend of moving awesome characters into the LoW slot, which effectively handicaps people for bringing Draigo/Logan/Ghaz since their death costs more VPs. Assuming this trend continues, what does everyone think about changing our LoW ruleset to be LoWs give the extra VP for wounds/HP, except for characters? Or as an alternative, only super heavies, gargantuan creatures give the extra VPs.
Thoughts?
11771
Post by: gameandwatch
Tis fine with me, never understood Ghaz's movement to the LoW section anyways
68185
Post by: MikeFox
I say no. The rules always seem to be changed to favor Marine players when there books change, this was never an issue when it was only orks. You want a cool character that might die easily, then you have to pay the point penalty as well. At least yours get inv. saves.
Then again, Ill just powerclaw anything that comes my way so I honestly don't care either way.
60913
Post by: Largo39
I mean, to be fair though, this is only coming up because we've had 2 more LoW characters introduced in the past what 3 weeks alone?
From what I remember from the preparations fo rthe august month the logic was that since ghaz was, at the time, the ONLY LoW character so making an exception was something we were going to wait until at least logan comes around. It's just that in this case we got logan AND draigo.
Furthermore given that it's likely we'll see Vect as one in september...
208
Post by: Bahkara
I say leave as is. Since we have a LoW allowed list I don't see a reason for an exception.
Being a long time player, it almost seems like GW is going back to the days when special characters were opponent's permission only, or only at certain point levels.
72053
Post by: pleasantnoodles
Well, we might want to update the list, because as standing, neither Logan nor Draigo are allowed since they're not on the list

Post by: Loch
What Mike said.
Lords of War are supposed to represent resources that are only used in times of dire need, and I think the escalation bonuses help represent that a bit if one guy is playing without LoW against Draigo/Logan/Vect/et al.
Or does Grimnar roll out the santa sled for every trip to the corner store for more whisky?

Post by: sgtpjbarker
I don't really feel the LoW point bump is right. Casey and I played with my Stompa vs. his Wave Serpent Spam. He would have won without the bump in HPs to my Stompa. I also played a screamer star list and both games felt like the stompa was the only thing keeping me in the running. I lost to the Wave Serpent Spam and won against the screamer star. Both games were tons of fun and the hp bump was not a factor in either. It just seems like old dogs with the LoW treatments. I say people bit the big one and play the game as written. We have seen lots of people table the huge LoW/Imperial Knight lists so I think it is back to rock, paper, scissors. Maybe with the new LoW and Character LoW I should say we are now playing rock, paper, scissor, lizard, Spock. Just my two cents.

I see nothing wrong with Codex LOWs. In my local gaming store the TO is allowing every thing from now on. No restrictions at all. This month I played against a Heirophant Round 1 and only lost due to first blood because he went first. I still ended up placing 3rd out of 14 in the RTT because of my high battle points. Ended 2-1. 1 and 2 were both 3-0. I say book LOWs can be handled.

Courtney's triple WraithKnights have a great paint scheme (black, blue & silver) of which you can see on the FB page. Armies not in attendance, for me, surprisingly, GK, Chaos Ds & bugs. SoB & BA don't count. Otherwise, 3 eldar/Deldar, two/three AM allied with SM combos. 2 orks. 2 Wolves. DAs, 6 or 10 straight up SM or ally combined.

Just a quick update about the Tuesday night Maelstrom Mods playtesting. Got some games down in the last week with the following mod:
Players build a 21-card deck of Maelstrom Objectives to accompany their army. If you have a faction-specific set of objectives (currently Orks, Wolves, Grey Knights, soon to include Dark Eldar), you must take at least three of those in addition to the standard objectives (thanks to Ian for that idea).
 Pros:
- Puts the deck in the player's control - fewer problems with randomness in the deck; you built stuff you want to see.
- No dead draws to be stuck with since you're not taking potentially useless cards like kill a flyer or blow up a building, or manifest a psychic power if you have no psykers.
- Theoretically closer games since players are fighting for consistent, achievable objectives each turn.
 Cons:
- Another layer of 'tuning' and 'deckbuilding' (figuratively and literally) on top of an already kinda convoluted army build process.
- Potential for less interactivity in games since you're going to be playing for objectives consistently with less impetus to kill your opponent's models.
- It's hard to shuffle 21 cards.
Personally, I very much like putting the objective cards in the player's hands as far as what's going to come up. As a player, I appreciate an extra layer to tune my list. From a fluff perspective, of course you're not going to give your army orders to blow up buildings if there aren't any on the battlefield, and why would you pin your victory on achieving something that might not even be possible? And finally, as a T.O., it keeps very close to the spirit of the Maelstrom Missions, and they can be played straight out of the book without modification, and no more moaning about how the cards screwed me!
That being said, the argument that it could create less interactive games is a strong one. The game is about blowing up your opponent's MANZ with ur DUDEZ and digging the carnage, and if you have achievable Maelstrom Missions to go after every turn, you're probably doing that instead of crumpin hedz, since objectives win you the game and crumpin just helps you forge the narrative. If we wanted to play more realistic, super-tactical objective-achievement based games, we'd be playing Heavy Gear Blitz.
Something else to chew on as a forecast is the idea of a set deck of objectives that removes all of the element-specific objectives but leaves the rest. This would basically mean removing 5-6 of the worst offenders (kill a psyker, manifest a power, blow up a building, blow up a flyer, blow up a vehicle or MC, etc.), and leave the rest of the deck intact so that every draw, while more random, would, in a vacuum, be achievable in any given turn.
Another thing that I thought of earlier today while my head was steaming after reading the Ork book again is to give every Warlord in a Battle-Forged list a free roll on the Tactical Traits chart in addition to any other Warlord Traits he is allowed.
What say you?
Either way, I'll be at the store tonight trying it out some more with Orks instead of Knights, to get a look at how the other half (that is, the half with normal armies that have models and units and HQs and stuff and not just a couple giant deathmachines LOL) lives, so come down if you want a game.

Didja explore a mandatory 12 or 18 that are the 1- 6 objective cards? And then having 6 to 12 (for a combo up to 24 or 30?) more of 'focused' fun (use psy=power, issue challenge, 3 in your deploy zone, etc.)?
 Pro:
1. retains the Maelstrom mission intent of Capture-the-Flag for that turn's scoring.
2. keeps a h2h Character based (Abaddon, ChapterBeatStick, Marny) army from ignoring the flags and just straight to beating heads
 Con:
Counters the creative fun of doing #2
- - - - - - -
My bet is that you did explore something like this, yes?
Extra tactical Warlord Trait proposal: "Yes"
And ...
"Yes, I will play missions the way you have proposed."

So Adptcons tweaked out Malestrum cards are pretty awesome, check them out here. I wouldnt mind trying them out. Much more balance in there is more variety in where an objective is and a discard mechanic built in.
http://adepticon.org/wpfiles/2015/201540Ktocards.pdf
Its not the greatest fix, but its something different from the BAO spread.
60913
Post by: Largo39
Those cards do seem interesting, though "away from home" and "in enemy territory" seem to be a bit too.. close to each other, so im not sure they are balanced there. Away from home is so easy to get that it trumps a lot of other 2 point ones that are signifigantly harder to achieve.
Still yay 2 points! and yay the cards seem very reasonable other than the away from home ones.
Id also be more than ok with BAO missions if we decided to go that route. *shrug*.
For fairness we could also try a rotation of different tournament "formats' to see which we like best. For example we could try a month of BAO, a month of Adepticon, and a month of like Nova missions, then settle on which format we liked best. Then we get some practice with tournament formats which helps if we ever want to go to any of those, and w ealso figure out which balance point we favor as well.

I really like the idea of trying BOA one month, Adepticon the next, and then a Nova to see which one we like. We could vote at the end of the day or when you leave of the day if you have to wimp out.
I really like the Adepticon cards, I don't see anything wrong with them, more chance, but more fun too. They would not work with Travis' idea of pick 21
I really think terrain needs some more work. Can we please try and get the store to buy some more terrain. Even the Imperial Sector stuff is looking shotty ( actually I meant to say, it is looking like it could use some glue. The players need to rise to the work and get some of the stuff we broke fixed. I did not mean that the stores terrain was bad, just that the player base could help improve it. Some people think I meant the terrain looked bad. That is not what I meant. Poor choice of words on my part.). Is there a way to come in and build/paint it on a Tuesday or day when Travis is around?

Did you mean 'shoddy' or ' sh*tty', Paul? The terrain wall is open every moment the store is, if you want to bring your brushes and hot glue guns and refurb the stuff that's there or put together some new stuff you have an open invitation to do so. I do my best to keep things in the best shape I can, but it's a lot to do alone.* Everyone is also free to bring personal terrain for use on the tournament day as long as they're ok showing up a little early for setup.
*Casey and <he who is now lost> both contributed new terrain to the store in the last couple months, so not wholly alone.
I'd be willing to take a crack at the Big 3 mission formats. Maybe try Adepticon in November, Nova in January, and BAO/ LVO in February. Honestly I just don't like how fractured the scene is. It's nice to do a "national circuit tour" of formats, but are we really going to settle on one of them? My philosophy on tournament format has been to keep things as close to the baseline as possible, so we don't get too acclimated to a certain idea or another. On the other hand, the big event most of us are likely to make the effort to travel to is BAO / LVO, so arguing in favor of that format for the local event isn't beyond the pale.
That said, for this one we're sticking to the billed format, mix of eternal war and maelstrom missions, with the following modification to the maelstrom missions: Players build a 24-card deck of Maelstrom Objectives to accompany their army. If you have a faction-specific set of objectives (currently Orks, Wolves, Grey Knights, soon to include Dark Eldar), you must take at least three of those in addition to the standard objectives.
The number of cards included in the deck has been increased to 24 from 21 based on playtest feedback, people expressed the idea that having a few more cards helped build a deck, and kept closer to the spirit of the Maelstrom Mission format while still cutting undesirable / useless cards.
See you all Saturday!

Ok, I hit a nerve, sorry about that. I was actually try to get some support from the people that visit the store, not those that run the store. To be more clear, the terrain is getting beat up by the players and maybe the players could do something about it.
So, I apologize for not being clear. I have left a box of bocage that I made. It is not the best stuff, but it did costs me some coin. I was hoping that others might do the same and my lame way of trying to do that has obviously fell flat. After reading my post again I do see how you took it and I hope you see my point now. I ask that THE PEOPLE THAT USE THE TERRAIN contribute to making some more or even repairing the stuff that is there.
About the store contributing, well that seems to be clear, they have and it is time for the players to step up. Let me know if I got that right.

sgtpjbarker wrote:Ok, I hit a nerve, sorry about that.
I am never in the store anymore, and even I contributed terrain in the last 3 months ... One of the pieces I contributed lasted 2 weeks before somebody ripped it apart to suit their own needs . I fixed it and the next time I wander out from the eye of terror and back to the store I will bring it with me for you guys to continue to enjoy.

The following post is to be read as though the guy typing is not intentionally being a douche:
On missions:
I'll play BAO missions at the BAO. And LVO. And I guess at BrawlitF, so there's plenty of opportunity, but I don't want to play them everywhere.
I *like* the GE missions as they have been ran at GE, the mix of E.W. & Mael. I would prefer the differing flavors (BAO & GE) to stay in their separate places.
Adepticon missions? Mmmm, okay.
Terrain:
I won't promise, but maybe I'll come at 9 this Saturday, with some paint and Superglue (no hot glue guns, they frighten me) and have at some pieces. Travis or Paul, PM me with a short list of the pieces that most need a little TLC; the brown 'Klingon" ruins and ... ?

I agree on no BAO/ LVO. They are mainly modified book missions anyway.
I think maybe add a NoVa, Adepticon or even a FEast of Blades mission once in a while just to give more options. Nothing too crazy (except in December). We don't want to stifle creativity with creative missions

After playing five games of BAO missions this past weekend, the idea of playing three more next weekend doesn't thrill me. Some of the BAO maelstroms really need work. It's worth noting that in a regular Maelstrom deck, you'll only draw a card to score points for holding your own DZ or getting units in your enemy's DZ a couple of times. On the BAO mission tables, you could roll those two objectives every turn, which leads to very annoying games for both players.
Also, we don't need to make things easier for Carlos.

@Jonathan
I went 2 & 3.
Round 1: Liz Foster. Epic fun. We killed models and laughed. Somewhere in there I won. Go figure. After the game, I offered her my arm, gentleman-like, to escort her to the Judge Table to turn in score sheets. She accepted and sauntered along side, hamming it up. Fun, fun.
Round 2: Tim Hosker and his 3 Drop Pod/3 TWC SW army (cool dude). I lost. I didn't spread out enough, got caught by the TWC and got hosed on Reserves. I'd play Tim Hosker again in a heartbeat.
Round 3: Anthony D'Amore. I think he was one of Liz's team mates from PowerPlay. It was funny as one of his buddies came by toward game's end and kept giving him a hard time about how he was gonna lose, even though it was close. We were tied at Turn 5's end, with only six minutes left. Anthony wanted to keep going. If we didn't finish a full Turn 6, then we agreed to go back to our tie. He had primary & LB, so 5 points. I had Maelstrom 3, and FB & LB.
IIRC:
Turn 6, he killed my Warlord and gained a Maelstrom point, but then I killed two dudes off a Primary objective. Points swung around to me. We rolled for Turn 7, and got a 'two'. I hope he wasn't too hard on himself. Nice guy.
Round 4: Sirus Chappell, another PowerPlay guy with BA: Mephy (who I delightedly killed), 4 Preds, Chapter Master Beat-stick-on-a-bike. Close game; he won. We squeezed in all 7 turns. I prolly coulda had my FireDs do more, but we rushed.
Round 5: Israel Sanchez. Fun game, though an easy one for Israel to win. I thought going second for the objective runs would be a good idea, but no, it wasn't. I Reserved too much as well, instead of starting with everything on the table. 3 or 4 of his units had Interceptor. Many things died on arrival. I walked right into that little strategy and got clobbered by it. I had little left at game's end. We had a great time though, talking about painting more while just going through the steps of playing the game.
Good judges, good staff, venue, tables & raffle prizes. Clovis has an enormous strip mall (and a mile from the venue) with all that is needed for a weekend, Denny's, a couple fast food joints for lunch and the SteakHouse for dinner. I will try to go again.
Mike & Darrel and Ian will have their stories to tell.

Welp I am bringing one of my classic silly lists to this months tourney, should at the very least be entertaining.
I have one question though, and I would be interested in the game empire court ruling: If a flyer has deep strike, can it enter play from reserve deep strike and be zooming? The rules seem to indicate that they can, because you seemingly just declare before you place them whether they are zooming or hovering...
Thoughts?

Thanks for the info on bringing 40k Chuck Norris (aka Draigo), sadly I will be unable to attend as I will be knee deep in a fountain spraying colors with a HVLP gun. Shooting for November instead, maybe I can get a 7th edition rulebook by then... You say there is a psychic PHASE, weird...
PS I do decorative concrete and have all kinds of fun tools and materials that would be usable for making terrain or restoring it, shoot me a PM if there is someway I can help with a terrain day should you guys have one. I live in a small condo here on the beach so "she who must be obeyed" has put a moratorium on all terrain projects... Have fun guys.

Flyers have to zoom on and can only enter turn 2. Unless there is a rule I have not seen in a codex?

The better question is which flyers can still deep strike, as nearly every one doesn't have that ability anymore. If a flyer can Zoom or Hover, you have to decide which mode it's in when it enters from Reserves. However, Flying Monstrous Creatures can still deep strike, and are locked into Swoop mode on the turn they do so.

Post by: gameandwatch
Tau remora stealth drones have deep strike and hover, and thus since the rulebook only states that you must choose how they are moving when they arrive, and the deep strike rules state they count as having moved at combat speed, this would lead me to believe they can arrive as flyers NOT in hover mode

October results:
Best Overall: Carlos's bugs. Bon Voyage, man. Give those east coasters heck.
Best imperial army performance: Cooper Waddel's White Scars. Nice for first showing at GE Pasadena
Best xeno army performance: Andrew's Tau. See, I remembered.
Best Paint: Darrel's DE. Display boards, kids, as Travis said, display boards.
For those interested in the 24 card experiment: there was a general consensus that they worked well enough. To restate, each player took their Maelstrom cards, and pre-built a 24 card deck, one deck, for all three rounds (no side board). If you have GK, orks, SW or DE cards, the codex specific 11-16 cards must be included. The intent being to have achievable goals instead of drawing cards you cannot score on, like tau pulling a " Harness the Warp".
Carlos brought up a preference for BAO bottom-of-turn scoring, but he's leaving Calif. so his opinion doesn't count anymore.
The rest of us, sensibly, wish to continue end-of-player-turn scoring. So that's settled. Cue another winking emoticon.

I appreciate it Casey, hahahaha Disks of DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! Yeah, tourney was a blast, had tons of fun, great opponents all around and man was Tim and I's game close as hell. Down to the wire that one. Discovered, aun'va and a tankmander... is hilariously hard to remove. Especially surrounded by 27 sniper drones, that with rapid fire and aun'va granting storm of fire, fire 3 shots. Didn't fully grasp how crazy this was until overwatch with 81 shots. YIKES!

Yeah, I could have dealt with the board just fine, but when the dice go south...WAY south... it is hard to recover. I would dig a rematch, though past experience with holiday mission shenanigans tells me that the missions will likely kill me hahahaha

Don't forget to mention we forgot to do the scenario special Christmas rules in our game, second round. Wow, you would think two teachers could get the directions right, geez! I really enjoyed our game. Gerantius is the bomb, and having him take down your Knight made the game for me, even making losing not a problem. Great to see young faces too. Ian did a fly by, sure missed his wolves, NOT! (hehe).
Another great event by Travis, thanks man. I wonder what Jan. will be, oh, LVO practice. I guess I will bring my Stompa! It is the answer to your Wave Serpent spam. Bring it Casey!

My theory is that because you weren't able to talk you were better able to concentrate on the game.
As for my last game, it wasn't a drubbing. He just up and quit saying he wasn't having fun. He said he didn't like having to hide from my shooting. If it had gone to a full game it would have been close and could have gone either way. He may like the Dark Eldar look but, in my opinion, if your going to play a heavy shooting army that is very fragile, you are going to be ducking and hiding alot,
He had a better chance of beating me than Mike
