Finished the last four Mechs from the Battletech starter box! Having a blast playing this game over beer and pretzels. My friend got some awesome 3d printed city terrain and we've been playing a 5 person merc campaign. All of us are almost bankrupt.
Battlemaster (died from an SRM ammo explosion. Will be a long time before I can buy another.)
Thunderbolt (solid workhorse brawler. It's slabs of armour and jumpjets have served me well.)
Shadowhawk (yet to be fielded, though I'm not expecting great things. Inferior in pretty much all ways to the Wolverine.)
Locust (Cheap as chips and annoying enough to be useful, unlike it's garbage starterbox counterpart, the Commando)
For posterity, the rest of my stable.

Did the piglets start life as Gretchin?
They're just the stock gnoblars that come in the Underworlds warband, but I greenstuffed little piggy noses onto them.
I've got a real Goofy/Pluto situation going with the pig-dog, but I figured making everything porcine was really the only right way to go with this army.
I spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect head to use for the hunter, but then I remembered I had an ork painboy from a starterbox collecting dust in my closet.
I think he's kinda silly looking as an ork, but he made a pretty good pig!

Dude! So much character in all these faces, I can hardly even. Are they all based on orc heads? Once you gave that away I find myself squinting at all the piggie heads and wondering.
Oh! I've been spending too much time in Puppetswar's site, and thought of you when I saw these slapped on an ork body: https://puppetswar.eu/pig-hybrid-heads.html
44046
Post by: McGibs
Thanks! Trying to give each one a unique character has been the most fun with this project.
They're all orc heads (I'm not a good or patient enough sculptor to pull off heads from scratch) from 40k orks, black orcs/'ardboys and spellcrow keffiyah orcs for the hooded ones (they're especially muppety.)
When I first started, I was also looking at those puppetwar heads and also manic pig heads, but decided against them to give myself a bit of practice with greenstuff.

I've always really loved the character in the Great Unclean One kit, but I never really had a reason to get one as I don't play anything Nurgle related. Conversely, I've never really gelled with the "Ogres on Mammoths" aesthetic of the Beastrider kits, so the problem here solved itself!
Lot of greenstuff work sculpting the nose/ears/lips, giving her a proper regal bosom, and doing massive ammounts of skin repair. The crown was 3D printed, as was the contents of her wine-goblet.

Yeah, my partner pointed out the exact same thing :p
It's a 3d printed part from a cauldron I had lying around that fit the cup, but I agree... looking at it finished it does look a bit odd and "static", rather than sloshing around wine.
Are you stopping there or will the hog roast continue?
I've got the main block of infantry and heroes done, but I've still got a bunch more on my workbench! Next up is probobly some mournfang riders, gnoblars, and my mawpot.

Pre any additions, just figuring out the accessories.
Greenstuffed (and greyscaled so you cant see :p) There was a LOT of filling in open wounds and sores. The GUO is really gross you guys...
And primed. The bra straps I did with synthetic twine and was probobly the hardest part of the conversion, involving a mix of knot tying and superglue.
and someone on another forum asked about my skin-painting process, so I threw this together.

Post by: McGibs
I've had this army in the works for about two years now, but I'm finally starting to get highlighted models done! I wanted to do an army that was clean and practical, making use of a lot of decal transfers and edge highlighting, which was something I've never really tackled before.
The helmets are from https://bombshellminis.com/36018-helmet-set-r8/ and consist of a clear plastic dome and pewter collar (I didn't want to paint faces, so I sprayed them with gloss black). Conversion was pretty easy, just removing part of the marine's collar. On some of the pushfit models with pre-attached shoulderpads, I had to trim the piping on the pewter collar down to fit, but its not very noticeable on the final thing.
Lore wise, I liked the idea of having an Ad Mech controlled Marine force where they function essentially as Marine Skittarii. They were orginially escorts for an Explorator Fleet, but have since been hijacked, mindwiped, and cloned by the Fleet Magos. The modified helmets are (on paper) to provide extra protection in hazardous environments, but really because the marine's heads have been horribly augmented with cybernetic shackles that they simply don't fit in Mk X helmets anymore.
Rules wise, I run them as Deathwatch to reflect their fleet's wealth of technology gizmos and total lack of regard for codex organization.
Intercessor Squad
Hellblaster
Aggressor:
I'm not a fan of the big bullet mittens, so I replaced his arms with Tartaros Terminator arms.
And bonus tagalong, my Ordo Xenos Inquisitor, who's sanctioning the whole Explorator Fleet.
The model is a Necromunda Van Saar with a Palanite Enforcer revolver.
He's very smol next to his bodyguards.

Time to plant the seeds of a new army!
I've wanted to do Tyranids for a while as a nice change of pace from my clean-lined marines and techno-demonic chaos. My painting goals are to make heavy use of contrast paints, drybrushing, and glazing for some nice organic gradients.
Model wise, I've always like nids, but there's been some goofy design elements that never really clicked with me. Namely the bio "guns" and goofy dinosaur heads. My conversion goals for this army is totry and go more bestial and alien, more "cosmic horror" type look. More squid faces, eyeless worm mouths, spines, bee-hives, feathers, veins, all that good stuff. At the end of the day, they should still look like the gribbly space bug-dinosaurs that the core Tyranids idea hits so well.
I decided to do up a Genestealer for my first test model. I think stock genestealers are pretty goofy looking and have a lot of room to get scarier. First to change was the head, which I chopped the face off of and greenstuffed an upsidedown Pink Horror onto to to get something truly horrific. The limbs were the next conversion, as I think Tyranids have a bit of an "akimbo" issue with all their multiple arms. The models can get really jumbled because of the limbs, so I think reposing them will be one of my main conversion opportunities with this army. Scything Talons are perfect for folding down compact like bird wings, and tucking them up close to the nid's body looks much more naturalistic and also helps keep the model's silhouette readable. The Rending Claws I decided to elongate with an extra joint, making them more into gangly ape arms. There's been a couple genestealer art pieces where they look like freaky monster monkeys, loping along and climbing on things which I think is a perfect aesthetic to lean into.
Painting wise I wanted something fleshy and familiar, to contrast with the more alien features. Something like an earthworm .
306
Post by: Boss Salvage
Dammit Gibs, you've done it again, brewed up another brilliant army concept that takes a GW thing and asks, but what if cooler and more sci-fi? Super excited to see this swarm grow and how you fix the foibles of the Nid line
Also that bike chaplain is dummy good. I don't love that it doesn't have a clear combat weapon - the bike chappy is a real hammer in most armies - but I'm content to say the servo-arm mounts some extreme cutting laser or something
44046
Post by: McGibs
I tried holstering various melee weapons to the chappy, bit they all ended looking too bulky. In the end, I was content that the bike was hammer enough. :p

Painted up a Tyranid Warrior. I might play around with the spine colours a bit, try out some neon greens or pinks, but I'm pretty chuffed with this little squid-porcupine-raptor!
105376
Post by: MobileSuitRandom
Very cool. Recognizably Tyranids but while GW seems to still be working out how to move away from Giger while somehow re-appropriating whatever StarCraft Zerg appropriated from earlier GW Tyranids, your conversions bring them back into a much bigger Sci Fi imaginary tradition. Looking forward to where you'll be going with these!

Love him <3 The added gribble factor ( tm) but also the sense of motion. I've always dug Tyranid warriors but damn are they super static minis - and always have been, from back in the bucktooth 2E days The dynamism is really welcome (goes for the genestealer's vaulting pose as well). EDIT: Cute tail stripes as well

I finished up my Land-Speeder conversion to add some zippy firepower to my Marines. Speeders are cool, but I've never been a fan of the exposed crews and went poking around the internet for some conversion inspiration. I came across this fantastic one modeled after the Diamonback from Starcraft II by fellow Dakkanought Flinty, and I basically just copied it whole hog. The little hover feet make it look a lot more agile than just the "flying shoe" silhouette.
This is probably the most involved plasticard build I've done, and required a lot of measuring out weird angles on the computer, printing out a template, and cutting it from there. The joins are a little squadgy in places, but overall I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

The astartes psyker brought me great joy when I saw his simmilar mirrored black helmet. I wish I could somehow pull off some glowing-skull effect from inside the helmet. Maybe flip a switch when I fail a Perils of the Warp?
I got through my five man Blade(taser?)Guard squad. Obviously the blinged out stock versions weren't going to fit with my army's clean sci-fi theme, so I went for a pretty straightforward "breaching team" look instead. The shields are from the Necromunda Subjugator kit and worked out perfectly.
306
Post by: Boss Salvage
Great eye on that dome (inside a dome) Superb fit, design and kitbash-wise. Rocket pod replacement is much appreciated, and the integrated baby minigun is a smart touch, nice nod to the contemptor guns-in-fists. EDIT: Taser guard are of course legit as well. Even just the shield swap and lack of googas is a big enhancement over the standard.

Hey all!
I'm falling down a bit of a Horus Heresy pit and decided to start up a Word Bearer's force. I wanted to try something a little different than the standard "another red marine legion" colourscheme, so opted to bring in more of their original legion grey. These were a lot of fun to try and make each legionary unique with different coloured plates and decals.
I used the Age of Darkness mk6 marines, and some 3d printed mk3 and mk4 legs to match the new scale a bit closer (the mk4 lads are particularly chonky). I also used printed paper scripture to add some word-bearer-bling, because the idea of freehanding tiny text would drive me crazy.
Let me know what you think, and I hope to keep going with more historical marines!
