Thanks EDC, it's a scheme I am familiar with now, so it's fairly straight forward to do, although I do keep trying new techniques to make it look better.

I wonder if we have both offended the dice gods then? I used to roll ok with the same dice, now it's just gone downhill.

I wonder if my house has a curse upon it and only dice which have been blessed can roll decent?

That wouldn't work as I've had my dice fail me epically before.

Evening all,

Got some time in on the CSM squad this week and they are nearing completion:

Have a bunch of highlighting to do, along with eyes and a new effect I'm going to try on the shaft of the staff and one of the shoulders of the squad leader/captain/whatever he is, and given that winter sport has finished for another season, I'm all of a sudden getting more time for hobby stuff again... so I expect these guys will be finished next update!

Had a game against Knightley yesterday as well.

Tyranids (obviously) vs Ultramarines.... that were painted in Grey Knight colours so I got confused when he said no psychic phase haha.

Was Eternal War, Purge the Alien mission (Kill points)

Marines had 10 kill points on offer, I had 11, so fairly even there, however he had terminators, two cent squads etc which were going to be tough for me to melt down to slag with 2+/3++ saves.

It was an awesomely fun game with random stuff happening all over the battlefield, like venomthropes killing bikes in close combat and not dying, and a rhino taking a heck of a lot of punishment from the flying hive tyrant and somehow not dying...

Game ended 10-6 in favour of the marines, I had a flying hive tyrant and a squad of gants left.

Here is a couple of random photos:

Exocrine jumping up to do some AP2 sniping.

And the gant blob versus an assault squad.. this fight lasted almost the whole game

Looking forward to the next game, thanks Knightley!

Hi everyone,

CSM squad is very much done, just need to get the basing finished, so will have some awesome photos next update

Also with Knightley currently working on painting up the Deathwatch Marines from my Overkill game (and doing an awesome job! check out his blog)

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/5160/349329.page

And given that I have just finished my latest paint up, I figured it is time to get started on my Genestealer Cult! Really excited to get into this as Genestealers are the reason I got into 40k and Tyranids in the first place

See you all soon, I'm out of hibernation so getting back into the painting swing!

**There is meant to be photos, but gallery page seems to be having a meltdown and I can't upload any images :( **

Bases on almost finished on the marines, just need to put a bit more paint on them, along with a gloss varnish on the magma/lava parts and the squad will be officially complete!

Also primed up the Purestrain Princelings and Patriach for the genestealer cult, I figure I have good experience painting Nids, so I'll start with the two genestealers as I am going with a different colour scheme to the hive fleet. So they can be "test" models for the scheme

Hmmm, still cant seem to get photos uploading to dakkadakka gallery... sorry team.

I'll try again tomorrow and if no luck then I'll use the other hosting site I've used in the past.

Finally got photos working on DakkaDakka (Yay!)

So here is the most recent WIP shot of the leaders of the squad:

And a group shot of all of them together:

Just working on finishing off the bases with the gravel base and going to be doing a magma effect in the gaps you can see in the current basing, so will have final product pictures in next update!

Meanwhile as mentioned above, it's time to get onto the Genestealer Cult, and I'm starting with these:

Thanks for stopping by!

How did you do those skulls on the CSM squad? I've got a few skulls to paint and I like how you did those. I'm guessing they're painted bone, nuln oil in the eye sockets then agrax earthshade everywhere?

EDC - Yeah took a 30 brood of Termagants to try out a screen and Tervigon as a troop choice. Would have gone way better if I set up the screen a bit better, Im planning on trying it again in future games because I love the idea of lotsa little guys followed up by the big ones

Snake Tortoise - Black primer, Painted bone white, then a sepia (agrax) wash, and then some light highlighting or drybrushing of dead white. I like how they look as well and it's pretty easy to do.

Thanks mate, I'm on it

Tervigons with crushing claws and electroshock grubs seem like decent value, especially if you can get them into a shrouded bubble.

Snake Tortoise - No worries Currently I'm experimenting with Tervigon along with Electroshock Grubs and the Miasma cannon... means she can be a threat from further back with a decent attack and when things get closer there is two templates firing.

Knightley - Thanks boss, they have been glacially slow in getting finished, but that is more time was taken up doing other things, I am happy to say they are almost done so I can move onto other stuff again though!

Hi everyone,

Pleased to say the Chaos Space Marine squad that I've been working on for my brother is all complete.

I am happy with the finished product, and again I tried a few new techniques on top of the stuff I already was comfortable with.

First up was the shaft of the banner staff, I wanted to try and represent some sort of chaotic spirit or power within the staff so did a "big" version of lightning effects, I reckon it looks pretty good and breaks up the squad a bit colour wise.
Second was the shoulder pad and eye slots on the leader and banner bearer, the shoulder pad had some cool detailing in it, so I wanted to get a blue glow effect into the detail, and then carried this onto the eyes of the two minis, because Chaos... again I am happy with how this came out!
Lastly for the new techniques was the lava flowing through the bases, went well although next time I'll do a bit more red base layer before building it up to the yellow

The rest of the paintjob went as expected as I have painted a couple of things for my brother in this scheme before, although I have altered the gold a little this time so it's not as bright and garish.

Anyway, enough prattling here is some photos

Leaders:

Close combat:

Banner and guns:

The whole squad:

What's next you may ask?

Well, Genestealer Cult Codex is dropping in the very near future (I have my copy pre-ordered) and Knightley is painting up the Deathwatch Marines from my Deathwatch Overkill game, so It's time for me to return to the Xenos I love and I'm starting on my Genestealer cult minis!

Starting with the purestrain princelings to practice and test my colour scheme as I have some experience painting up Tyranid models now

Watch this space!

Hi everyone,

It's no secret I love Genestealers, the love started during Milton Bradleys Space Crusade where a genestealer ambush would leave my brothers crying as they saw their marines go down, when I started playing 40k I chose the Tyranids as my army because of genestealers, I started planning a smaller secondary army that was going to be a genestealer cult early last year (got some old school stealers on sprue and picked up some cheap leman russ tanks)... little did I know that they were going to get a full blown codex and official models this year!

I've already purchased the overkill game for the cult models, and Knightley is doing a very fine job painting up the deathwatch, so now I am just waiting to pick up my cult codex (and a pre-ordered rock grinder) and have started working on the models themselves...

To start with I am painting up the two purestrain princeling genestealers from the overkill game to test my colour schemes, and I'm planning on doing the Patriach model next so it can take command and grow the cult!

Here is initial progress shot of the stealers, thus far just base coats and a good wash, but so far the scheme is coming along nicely.

I haven't forgotten about Hive Fleet Ngaro though... have a game this Sunday against Knightley and will be keeping Ngaro models in my painting rotation moving forward

Thanks for checking in.

Heh, thanks.

I wanted to try something different in terms of scheme so I could try out some new techniques, and also planning on having the red skin lightening up through the different generations so they can be seen as one beautiful family

Cult codex arrived today, along with the datacards etc, so it's all on now. With the contents of the Overkill box, the old school stealers I've hoarded, two leman russ tanks and a Goliath on pre order it gives me a nice 1000pt GS Cult army to work on, interspersed with Hive fleet Ngaro modelling.

Looks like it will be a busy hobbying summer

Hi all!

So been a good week for hobbying.

Firstly I have pretty much finished the Purestrain Princelings which were testing out the colour schemes for my cult work, I'm mostly happy with it, and I'm interested to hear what you all think.

Obviously the more "human" the cultists become the skin colours will change a bit and I have plans for the armour/cloth/guns etc on the hybrids and acolytes. I also am still finalising what I want to do to base this army... hence why these aren't based yet.

I've got my cult codex now and it is pretty awesome, I'm going to have fun with this... should be picking up a Goliath this week as well.

Next up is the Patriarch... the cult can't grow without something to create and control it.

Also played a game against Knightley and some Necrons today... will get a mini report and photos up in next few days

Thanks for reading.

Kia Ora,

Just thought I'd stop by and show off a little bit, probably because I'm pretty excited!

Firstly, have picked up a GS Cult Goliath kit. Looks like it is a nice kit, and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to magnetise the truck/rockgrinder variants without too much issue.

Secondly, and even more exciting is I have purchased one of these:

Long term this was the obvious choice for me as I have a lot more models to paint and this will speed up priming/base coats and varnishing... I was chatting to Knightley after our last game and saw he used the same set up, so I figured if it was good enough for him (he paints awesome) then it's good enough for me

I've come to a decision on the bases for my cult army and have almost finished the ones on the purestrains, so should be completed models next update.

Thanks for reading.

Heh, I've had a quick read of the "instruction" manual that came with it... so many interesting translations, so if I run into trouble I will pick your brains on what the issue might be... I kinda need to build some more models before I can do a priming run with it though, and at the moment the hobby time is on painting up a patriach

Evening all,

Well, I have decided on a basing theme for the cult army which is going to be a combination of dirty/slimy water, grey gravel and some crushed rock, depending on what gen the model is and where it normally hangs out.

So the Purestrain Princelings are all done and based with slimy water and gravel as they hide a bit more in the shadows

Next update will be the patriarch as I have already done the base for him as I did it at same time as Stealers to see it working together.

Stay tuned, exciting times ahead!

Update time!

The Patriarch from my Genestealer is on the painting table currently, base coats laid down and ready for washes and highlights.

The lower parts of the base were done at the same time as the Purestrain Princelings to see how they all fit in, and the theme works well. Normally I would base after finishing the paint job

So the big daddy of the cult is coming along nicely!

Thanks for reading.

Hi all,

Bit late with the update this week... been rather busy in the "real world".

Finished the genestealer familiars, I mucked up their heads slightly so need to go back and fix that up at some stage in the future, but overall happy with how they have turned out.

Basing is different on these two in that they are physical manifestations of psychic power I thought I'd try a dark aura type base, it's ok... maybe I'll have another go at them later on...

Without further delay, here is the new additions:

And the current cult army in all it's painted glory... it's early days of the infestation, and I'm painting them up in order that they would appear in a cult infestation

Next on the painting table is the Abberants, which can sometimes pop up in the early generations.

Thanks for reading.

EDC - Thanks, they are pretty cool little models, I can really see them scampering around underfoot.

Knightley - Not quite... haven't set the airbrush up yet, this is pretty much the last squad that will be done 100% with brush, the next push will have some airbrush work, primarily for priming.

Ratius - Thanks, I trust Hissy is keeping you busy?

Sheesh this time of year is busy in real life isn't it? Silly season I guess.

So I haven't had a huge amount of time to sit down and paint, all I have really done on Abberants since last update is a wash and then bringing the red back up on the skin surfaces... here is where they are at:

However I haven't been totally idle during this time. I knew I wouldn't have much time to sit down and paint but didn't want to waste a bunch of time so I set up a system where I could clip, mold line and glue a model or two together each day in the small down times I had... I pretty much have everything cult related built now, just a bit more to do on goliath as that will be magnetised so will take a bit longer, so here is the army as it stands (missing 10 purestrain old school space hulk genestealers):

I have a painting plan set out for the army as it stands as well, based on generation of cultists so I should be able to get back into the painting soon.

Meanwhile I'll keep using my little system to build up the remaining models of the Cult AND Hive Fleet Ngaro, who I haven't forgotten about

Thanks for reading.

Well I managed to get a bit more painting done on the brothers so I guess that's a good thing EDC

Did some more work bringing the purple robes, the blue pants and the skin up again... I'm looking at doing some tattoos on the top of the back and heads of these guys like they have in the codex, I'm debating which colour to use for the tattoos however.

I'm pretty happy with how these are coming out, although I may have had a few issues with consistency of the lightest paint on the skin work so it is a bit thicker in places than I would have liked.

Should have this group close to done come next update.

Enjoy!

Hi for 2017 Dakka!

Been a good while since my last update, I trust everyone had a good relaxing holiday time.

So for my first post of 2017 I'd better do a bit of a summary of my 2016 hobby wise.

2016 "Consume and grow year" Goals:

- Finish building and painting all remaining Hive Fleet models.
- Get the Hive Fleet out on the table and play a few games.
- Buy some more Tyranid models to continue to grow Ngaro.

So, I didn't quite finish painting all the remaining Ngaro models, and I didn't buy many more Tyranid models however I had a good "distraction" reason for this, and that reason was... Genestealer Cult!! So I started a whole new army and a bunch of my painting and building time got redirected to that at the back end of 2016. I built a lot of models in 2016, painted 22 Tyranid models, 10 Chaos models and 5 GSC models which totals 36 models painted, which is a bit lighter than I had hoped... but I now have a lot of models to paint in 2017.

In terms of games, I feel this goal was well achieved. I played 14 games over 2016, so just over one per month, and I played heaps of different armies which was awesome for my learning. Sisters of Battle, Orks, Thousand Sons, Imperial Guard, Dark Eldar, Tau, Grey Knights, Ultramarines, Chaos demons were all faced with varying degrees of success. I am really looking forward to playing more games and have already played two in 2017 so off to a good start.

To finish my 2016 summary I just wanted to say a thank you to my regular painting blog followers your comments help keep me motivated to continue to post updates. Specially big THANK YOU to Knightley, he has been awesome in 2016 and has really helped me a lot with the hobby in getting me playing different armies, painting up some models for me, through to giving me hints, tips and advice on painting and building. So thanks heaps Knightley and I'm looking forward to our friendship continuing in 2017!

So, onto 2017 goals:

- Continue to play at least one game per month
- Finish building all currently owned Tyranid models (62 models)
- Finish painting 1000pt Genestealer Cult Army (44 models left)
- Paint at least half of unpainted Tyranid models (38 models)
- Encourage brother to get off his bum, finish building his Tau forgeworld titan and get him and his army back on the tabletop.

The painting goal of this year is rather ambitious at 82 models to be painted (my record is currently 60 in one year), however I am a lot better than I was and I have also purchased a air brush set up which should speed up a lot of the base coating particularly on the Tyranid skin.

Getting my brother inspired/motivated could also be an ambitious goal, but we will see how I go

I'm also planning on updating this blog more regularly again, as I have been a little slack in the back end of 2016.

So, stay tuned for what I hope will be an eventful year for myself, the Genestealer Cult and our Hive Fleet Ngaro overlords and masters

It was a great 2016 for both of us and I felt the continuous games we got in were varied and enjoyable (heck we still talk about the mawloc getting his head stuck in the underside of a GK razorback and dying)

Very ambitious goals painting wise for 2017, however I feel with the airbrush, 70% of the heavy lifting is done already.

Bring the rest of 2017 on I say!

Update time!

Aberrants are complete... and I reckon they look pretty sweet! The unique thing about these guys that I've played with a bit is tattoos. In the codex some of the aberrants have tattoos on them, I thought that was pretty cool, so I have done my own version with a green colour, let me know what you think:

I've also sat down and had a think about a name for this cult, as calling it "my genestealer cult" just didn't seem quite right, so after a bit of thought I've decided to call it the Cult of the Red Saviour, given that the Patriarch skin is red and he is saving the population from the Imperium I thought it was pretty apt. Here is all the current completed models thus far:

Also played another game, this time was against Knightleys brother using Sisters of Battle. Was a very fun close fought game which ended at turn five with a 16-11 victory to Hive Fleet Ngaro. I'll get a few pics and a summary of game up later in the week

See you soon.

Hey LDP!

Was very nice to meet you yesterday, and seeing your Ultramarines in person was awesome, that is a great looking army you have coming along there! Thanks for subbing to the blog and for helping out with the big game yesterday, we had some pretty awesome duels, I hope we can have some more!

So this week I got some work done on the Acolyte hybrids, just laid down the base colours;

Also played a four player 8000pt game yesterday with LDP, Knightley and Knightleys brother, ended up being LDPs Ultramarines/Knightleys Grey Knights vs Hive Fleet Ngaro/Chaos Daemons. Was a very entertaining game with some awesome mini battles happening within the major conflict... here is a teaser pic:

Working on a bit of a summary write up at the moment so should have this up in next day or two, I'm sure there will be summaries popping up in other areas of Dakka forum as well

Thanks for reading.

Hi all,

So as teased above with the deployment photo, I participated in a 4 player game. Two teams of 4000pts, being a total points game of 8000pts, biggest game I have played thus far.

Teams were:

LDP (Ultramarines) & Knightley (Grey Knights) VS Mad (Hive Fleet Ngaro) & Knightleys bro (Chaos Daemons)

We each had an objective in our deployment zone which if we held it at end of game was worth three points, and the oppositions was worth three points.

Each of us started with 1000pts (or so) on the table with the other 1000pts in reserve. Means we could stagger getting everything on the table or else it would have been very cluttered.

There was heaps of summoning from the daemons throughout the game, however the psychic phase wasn't a big success overall with some key powers getting blocked.

As it was a bigger game, I can't remember everything so I have done a bit of a highlights package based on some of the cooler photos I got. Enjoy!

Calgar jumping out of a perfectly good transport and sucking in the big termagant screen... sneaky gants managed to knock a few wounds of the big blue dude. However he would survive the rest of the game until turn six when the hive tyrant came and butchered him as revenge for Maccrage! Calgar tanked soooo much stuff from the Chaos/Nid army and somehow lost most amount of wounds against the gants in CC hehe.

I had a squad of six warriors in a pod. They dropped in behind the ultramarines on turn two, wreck the vehicle in front of them with deathspitter fire... then the Imperials decided to do some ACE rolling on reserves and six units came on and destroyed them, to be fair they did take the shooting of a lot of those units and I did have the cyte survive for another turn.

Meanwhile on the other side of the battle the Trygon Prime came on and took out a small squad that was harrassing the backline, then a ultramarine tact squad with grav came charging on from an outflank

And the last thing the tactical marines ever saw was this

The Tervigon was holding up the right hand side of the board and did pretty well, from memory she spawned for three turns and they were big spawns as well of 13+ each time. However due to some psychic shenanigans from the Grey Knights that we weren't able to stop there was a bunch of explosions and mind melts and all sorts of stuff and the right side started to collapse, however there would be one last stand... the latest spawn got ready to charge:

And charge they did! Pinning the Warlord to the tank for a final stand! (until the tank moved, the warlord fought back, caused more wounds and the out of synapse gants turned and ran and got cut down by said warlord... doh!)

In the end the joint forces of the marines were victorious, and they vanquished the daemons and tyranid invaders.

Was an awesome game! I would have done a few things differently if we were to do it again.

It was a pleasure to play on a table with such awesome painted armies. The marine forces are really really really well painted, and the daemons didn't let the team down either.

Oh, I also built a vehicle for the Cult of the Red Saviour...

Is magnetised so it can be a rockgrinder with the drilldozer blade etc or just a normal truck. when I get to painting it you will see all options

See you all next update!

Have an update on the first acolyte squad - Washes have been applied, now to bring the colours back to life and finishing them off.

Hi Dakka,

I have been neglecting my Hive Fleet a little in recent months, mainly because there is a Cult uprising in the works. Now that I have finished building all the models for the Cult of the Red Saviour that I have I found I had a little bit of time here and there for modelling more when I'm not painting the Cult models up, so I decided to keep going on the Hive Fleet Ngaro models... and I built this and magnetised a few options, including the wings

It was relatively straight forward and the only issue I had was on venom cannon arm when the drill bit caught and ripped out a bit more than intended... easily sorted with a bit of green stuff though.

So I have a nice hive tyrant to add to the "to be painted pile", be a while before its gets painted up though.

Thanks for checking in.

Hey EDC and Knightley....

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of the whole spam winged TL devourer tyrants, and I've done a couple of games with the lash whip and bone sword combo and found it worked rather well. Although it is hard to deny that TL devourers do some good work due to weight of fire etc.

I'm looking at playing with a winged one next game and a walking one with slightly different load outs and see how it goes.

Speaking of which, March is getting close... better see who wants a game

amazingturtles - They are pretty cool models to paint, especially for someone who is used to nids... makes a change painting a few guns and other human type equipment.

EDC - Thanks, they are getting there!

Knightley - Hah, I haven't heard jazz hands looking at these guys, I do however hear "Hi there! We were wondering if you'd heard about our Saviour" a friendly cult recruiter gets more followers I'd say

Warboss_Waaazag - Thank you, I reckon the red skin is pretty effective, although I'm planning on making it a bit pinker/fleshier on the Neophytes once I get to them.

Hi all,

Got a game in against Knightley yesterday and it was close and intense with it coming down to a couple of key moments towards the end, so here is a little summary:

Eternal war, Purge the alien. 11 kill points in each army.

CC tooled close combat tyrant with a gargoyle screen charged along the left flank, flying tyrant got paroxysm off a couple of times which meant the gargoyles got into combat, did some damage and the cron squad failed morale. Gargoyles weren't able to catch them, the cron squad would then weather fire from a tyrannocyte with warriors popping out. The cron squad late game had one model left, so did the warrior squad... went to charge, missed by an inch and got blown to bits in last turn. The hive tyrant, got tar pitted by scarabs as I seriously underestimated how fast they would come around the bunker. Tyrant died against scarabs and spiders that joined later game :( So left side wasn't very successful for the nids.

Carnifex could see a Ghost ark, couldn't do much against it though so ran up the left/middle, got in range of some cron warriors and started to dakka them down, the warriors then disappeared in an eternity gate, so carnifex charge ghost ark, and blew it up! Survived explosion and killed several warriors inside. However, it got lit up and tanked a fusillade of firepower from all over the cron lines and was finally dragged down late game.

Exocrine could see the monolith, but couldn't hurt it so it melted some cron biker things (great description huh?) to get first blood and a kill point. Exocrine was also involved in a pretty big gamble play from both cron and nid armies which is highlighted below. Exocrine survived the game with a couple of wounds left, perhaps my target priority was slightly off, but not much more I could have shot at to be fair. There was also a termagant screen through here which took a pounding but survived the game with a couple of survivors along with the walking warlord hive tyrant who, to be honest was rather disappointing in this game, bascially just tanking some damage and picking off a few warriors and hull points from monolith with venom cannon. Didn't help that I stuffed up last turn and didn't declare charge with him.... doh!

Over on the right flank, tervigon held it's own. Corked on first turn and spawned 8 gants which is bad for my girl, she normally does really well in spawning, but never mind it didn't hurt too bad. She came out of cover mid game and shot and charged the last three man bike squad and took it down last turn with no damage taken herself... so I guess she did her job

And this happened... Warrior blob started taking damage from dakkafex, so an eternity gate was used and the blob and lord appeared in a clump right in front of my exocrine.... PLASMA LARGE BLAST TIME! Was a big call from Knightley. He also popped a rez orb thing which meant he could re-roll re-animates. So I fired.... DIRECT HIT! 18 wounds basically.... and end result was three warriors dead :( Curse Knightley and his awesome rolls, douse the entire squad with ap2 plasma and only three go down. I've now got the terminator theme song in my head with that play.

From here venomthrope got popped along with a tyrant guard which gave a couple more kill points.

Final count: Nids: 5 - First blood, line breaker, 3 kill points. Crons: 6 - Line breaker, 5 kill points

Crons win, but such a tight game it came down to a few rolls last turn.

Thanks Knightley, look forward to the next rumble!

Evening all,

Nice update tonight, I finally finished the acolyte squad! Woohoo.

I'm pretty happy with how they turned out, I had a couple of issues with the flesh but managed to keep them close enough to the rest of the Cult so that's ok also sussed out the colour I'm going to go with on the minig suit/armour pieces. Also found some coloured rocks at a craft store which I though would be a cool addition to the bases of the Cult so this is the first squad to get the minerals added, hard to see in the photo but it looks pretty cool

One thing I am debating in my head is what main colour to make the vehicles when I get to them? Do I paint them red with blue trimming etc to mimic the patriarch? Or do I do them blue base?

Let me know what you think might work

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Hi everyone,

So after completing the acolyte hybrids above I went to go start a new squad and remembered that they were the last of my primed models.

This meant it was time to experiment with the air brush I purchased late last year to try and help speed up the painting process through priming and base coating using the air brush.

I got the air brush set up, turned on with paint in it and pressed down... air came out but no paint... hmmmmm, so after a few minutes of trying to work this out I remembered Knightley pushing down and pulling back when he gave me the tutorial, and lo and behold paint started flowing!

I'm no expert by any stretch haha, but I did get the hang of it and started priming a whole bunch of stuff:

In that picture is most of the Cult models, a bunch of termagants, a mucolid, Carnifex, and hive tyrant along with some magnetised bits. Along with priming black I also did some night blue base coats on the skin of the Tyranid models.

Happy with how it all went overall and looking forward to bashing out a bunch more stuff with the air brush, and I've got more stuff to paint again hooray!

Cheers.

Heh, I figure using the air brush for priming and base coating will do two things, a) speed that part of process up and b) it's just priming and base coats so if I do stuff something up during my learning phase then it's not such a big deal.

I'm sure I'll be a little more "fearful" if I ever try to do smaller stuff, but that's a while away yet.

Hi all,

I pulled the gargoyle unit out to glue them to their flying stands as I'm going to pop some magnetic sheet to the bottom and store them standing up on a piece of metal, way easier than trying to get foam that will fit them. In the box with them was an unpainted mucolid, so I thought I'd paint it up to keep practiced in my Ngaro fleet paint scheme as I've been focusing more on the cult recently.

I didn't put the side tentacles on the tyrannocyte when I built it so I could use them to build a mucolid, which I managed to pull off.

Have laid down basecoats, started highlighting skin and tentacles, coming along nicely. I aim to have this finished really quick as it isn't a difficult model to paint and I have a game coming up which I'd like to throw it on the table for to see what it can do. Str 8 ap3 large blast when it pops could be entertaining, and if it gets taken down then oh well, 15 points.

I've also done a white top down spray over the cult models I primed black the other day, so they have had their two colour prime and are ready for production, I think I am going to go with red as the primary colour for the Goliath and Leman Russ, with blue trimming and purple/gold genestealer symbols. Although knowing me I'll change my mind again over easter haha.

Sorry about the sideways picture, not sure what happened there.

I'm going to give this floating bomb a go in the next game I play as I haven't tried them before so figure why not? Next up I'm going to move onto another acolyte hybrid squad for the cult.

Hi all,

Master Azalle - Thanks for the feedback, it is the look I am going for on the skin of my hive fleet so I'm glad to hear it is working

Update time... I've laid down all the base colours on the second Acolyte squad and they have now had a wash and are ready for highlights and details to be done:

There has also been more expansion to both Hive Fleet Ngaro and the Cult of the Red Saviour:

So I got the Armoured claw box for the cult and a brood box for the hive fleet. My plan on the brood box is to make the big creature magnetised so it can be used as a Tyrannofex or a second Tervigon if I'm going for a swarm army, the little guys will just be fleshborer termagants because I need a few more. This brood box brings my total number of gants/gaunts to 100 models which is a bit of a milestone I guess hehe.

The sprue in the picture is a carnifex which I got for a very cheap deal along with the lictor, the random model there is an old metal tyranid model that has lost it's head that the seller threw into the box. I believe it's an old school hive tyrant, so I'm going to kit bash a new head for it and get it looking sweet again

Also played an awesome game against Knightley yesterday... I'll do up a battle summary and post it up in the next day or two.

Thanks for checking in.

1500pt Battle summary.

Hive fleet Ngaro:

Flying hive tyrant
Walking hive tyrant in tyrannocyte
Venomthrope
Living artillery node
Tervigon and 30 babies
Genestealer brood
Mucolid
Carnifex

Knightley’s Tau:

Commander with 3x Broadside squad
Pathfinder squad with markerlights
Gun drone squad x2
Kroot squads x2
Hammerhead tank
Riptide suit
Crisis battlesuit squad

“Contact lost” Maelstrom game, dawn of war deployment, one TO per objective held each turn.

Hive fleet Ngaro deployed on the lighter cover side of the table, only had four pieces of terrain on my side due to the vagaries of the dice and one was outside deployment zone. The Tau had eight or nine terrain pieces and three objectives within deployment, perfect for setting up a gunline J

Genestealers in ruins to hold objective two, Exocrine and warriors nearby, then in the middle I had the biovores right up against the imperial bastion with the flying hive tyrant standing behind, then out to the left I had the Tervigon, her babies along with a venomthrope and carnifex to hold left and objective one. Objective four was pretty much in the middle of the table in the open, so had my eyes on it.

Knightley deployed his Tau with drone squads backed by a riptide (sitting on objective) opposite the genestealers and exocrine, in the middle there were pathfinders with markerlights with a bunch of kroot (sitting on objective) out in front meat shielding. Out on his right flank there was a hammerhead (on objective) and a bunch of Broadsides with commander looking at pretty much the whole board with scary firepower.

With deployment done it was time for Knightley to see if he seized initiative… and he did… uh oh, here comes some pain!

Tau fired a lot into the broods, and I only lost a biovore outright, but took numerous wounds on some of my bigger bugs, and the flying hive tyrant was down to 2 wounds before being even able to take off into the air. He also pushed up with kroot and drone squads.

My first turn was mixed. My biovores obliterated most of the pathfinder/markerlight squad… there was only two left when they finished getting bombed, who then went running. Exocrine melted a bunch of gun drones and the one remaining model ran off when it’s self-preservation chip kicked in. The hive tyrant took off, cast catalyst on itself and exocrine, and then promptly periled crashing to the ground and stood up on one wound awaiting the turn two deletion, however tyrant did shoot down the second drone squad… all of them. The army as a whole moved forward and got into whatever cover they could and the big termagant blob moved towards objective four in the middle of the table.

The first turn pretty much set the tone for the game, it was awesome fun with a lot of stuff happening and a lot of units being decimated or completely removed. The tau reserves were a squad of kroot which snuck on to the right to try and take out the genestealers camping on objective, the kroot took out 4 out of 5 genestealers with gunfire, and promptly lost a whole bunch of their squad when biovores dropped off a welcome present, the survivors managed to crawl into cover, shoot down the last genestealer and hold on until they were dug out by and angry exocrine… the exocrine was angry because the riptide ran away from it after it took out the shield drones, although the riptide running may have had something to do with the close combat armed hive tyrant landing next to it in a tyrannocyte haha

The other Tau reserves were crisis suits, which appeared next to objective four to score some points for Tau, in front of a crawling mass of termagants with a tervigon spawning more. They scored the point, tried thinning the herd out a bit and then tried backing out… however they were caught by a brood of spawned termagants who managed to charge into them and dispatched the suits over a couple of rounds of combat… it is so weird being able to hit on 3s with Gants in CC hehe. The heroic gant brood (now five strong) then lined up and charged the broadside/commander unit that had been softened up by the biovores, only to have the riptide finish off the last two models in “supporting fire” overwatch, dam Tau and their shooting.

Special mention for the Mucolid purely because this was its maiden game for me. It came deep striking on and was on track to land in a very good place (from tyranid perspective) so Knightley fired interceptor from broadsides… and killed it on the way down aww L . However, that 15 point model basically took out a turn of shooting from the broadsides that the rest of the army now didn’t have to weather. Similar the Tyrannocyte delivered the hive tyrant and then held an objective that the riptide had been camped on also absorbed a bunch of fire before getting taken down… I believe between these two floating annoyances they saved a lot of trouble for the rest of the army, so I’m pretty happy overall.

What else happened? Well, the three strong warrior brood managed to survive with one model hiding in LOS blocking terrain to hold up the synapse web for the exocrine to keep working at peak efficiency, the last warrior tanked a lot getting to where it did in the end but saved like a champ. The walking hive tyrant ended up holding an objective for a turn and then left cover to try charge the remaining tau line, but fell short in the charge and got turned into Ichor by the tau suits the following turn, Knightley really really wanted it dead for some reason. Carnifex and hammerhead were playing a bit of peak a boo on the left hand side, but eventually the carnifex and the venomthrope got taken down, objective one out on my left was resolutely held by one last termagant that had seen it’s broodmates systematically blown to bits by smart missile systems. Mumma Tervigon was close by to offer encouragement to the lone survivor.

The game ended on turn six Knightley still had a mostly unscathed riptide, the broadside/commander squad, the hammerhead and a few scattered kroot left. The hive fleet had a few termagants, a mostly healthy tervigon, two biovores, and the limping warrior and exocrine.

Tau scored:

Slay the warlord
11 maelstrom victory points

Tyranids scored:

Firstblood
10 maelstrom victory points

BUT WAIT! My warlord trait was Master of fate that allowed me to reroll D3 victory cards, my original roll was a one (reroll time!), so on a roll of a one Tau win, on a two we draw, on a three nids win... dice rolled and it was two points. So we ended in a well fought to the bitter end draw. 12-12

Hive mind thoughts and learnings

MVP units would have to be the biovores first and foremost, they more than made their points back plus some and they could have done even more if the scatter hadn’t knocked one down in opening tau salvo. Other strong contender was the tervigon (again) she held down the left flank, spawned pretty well, and the baby broods took care of the crisis suits and held objectives to the last. Mumma tervigon herself also made a last gasp dash to claim objective four and get some victory points right at the end as well. Good running big mumma.

Key learnings for me from this game was:
a) Spread objectives out a bit more… when we were allocating them I wasn’t really thinking about sides at all, and I ended up plonking three objectives in terrain because that’s cool…. Ended up being Tau deployment zone so gave them easy objectives.
b) Deploy with losing first turn in mind. Yeah I can’t control Knightley seizing first turn off me, however where I set my flying hive tyrant up was ok, except I was too far back from the terrain and could be seen by most of Tau army, in hindsight if I set tyrant up right up behind biovores she would have been safer, then would have been able to take off next turn and would have done some damage. Similar with the warriors, as they ended up exposed and lost 2/3 while they scattered to get into the cover.
c) Riptides can move fast!
d) Ties in with c) a little bit, I dropped the CC hive tyrant next to riptide, which scared it off but left the tyrant stranded as I didn’t realise how fast it moved, means the tyrant had to leave cover and try get a 10” charge to reach the kroot. In hindsight I should have perhaps dropped it on left hand side which would have had similar effect in gaining control of an objective, but would have put me in range of more units for charging etc.
e) Occasionally the random thoughts turn to gold. When rolling for warlord trait I decided to have a go at the tactical table due to the fact we were playing maelstrom, I got the re roll one which in the end was key in not losing the game and could have snuck a win!

Thanks Knightley for the awesome game, look forward to May’s dust up.

Thanks Knightley I find throwing summaries together a day or two after while it is still fresh in head way easier than referring to notes or photos a good time later.

Plus it allows me to think about what I might have done differently for future games.

Thanks EDC was a LOT of fun!

Update time:

As mentioned above I got a still on sprue carnifex for nice and cheap (with free lictor and 2nd ed hive tyrant) so I thought I'd put it together:

Gave it the tusked head, spined carapace and scythed tail so it can be differentiated from it's brood mates which have different combos, plus if I do use it as a close combat fex as pictured then it makes sense to have extra stuff to swing around in melee. The arms are magnetised so can be swapped out for shooting options etc.

Also continuing on with the latest acolyte squad for the Cult, here is the latest progress:

Coming along well, and they will be done in the very near future!

Everyone loves carnifexs especially when magnetised for different options. Hopefully they'll be awesome in 8th.

Hi all,

The acolyte squad is so very close to finished... just have to paint up the basing and finish a few details on the models themselves and then done.

While I waited for the PVA to dry on the basing material I thought I'd start a side project.

I've had this terminator built and sitting there doing nothing for years, I got it from a White Dwarf along with a Ork...

My younger brother has recently started his own business called Geekhouse NZ, he is dealing with wargaming, esports and pop culture stuff, so I thought as a bit of a opening present I'd paint the terminator in the geekhouse colours which are white and orange.

Here is the first WIP, base coats laid down and will be doing careful washes into all the joints and crevices. I'm also planning on doing the gh symbol freehand onto the orange shoulder pad and the orange shield.

Photo isn't the greatest but you get the idea. I'm planning on getting this done pretty fast as he has a SHadow War event coming up and I'd like to give it to him then

If you want to check out his website it can be found at www.geekhouse.co.nz

Thanks for reading.

Hi all,

So things are ticking along well on the hobby side of life.

I've been helping my brother get his shop up and running with terrain etc so I can help him start running Warhammer Wednesdays, first one is tomorrow night... hopefully we get a couple of tables worth of games going

While helping out little bro, I've also kept going with my own stuff, firstly the second acolyte squad is completed:

Next on the paint list for the Cult is a bit of heavy support, I've just done a couple of base colours so far with a few more to do yet:

So this should keep me busy enough in my personal paint quest

Lastly, I finished the little side project for my brothers shop:

Tried some different techniques on the power armour on this guy, and pretty much my first attempt at freehand on the symbols... I reckon he is pretty good. Colours match the shop itself with the white/orange combo.

My brother is going to base it himself, hence why it is base at the moment.

Thanks for reading!

Hi all,

Have seen 7th ed out with a game versus my brothers Tau.

Was a bit of annihilation with Hive Fleet Ngaro munching down on some Tau, final score was 12-3 although I had some good draws of the maelstrom cards and ended up with only a few units left on the table by the end.

Highlight was managing to get a min genestealer squad into a building with some stealth suits.... no prizes for guessing who won that little engagement.

Given that 8th is now upon us and genestealers have been buffed somewhat with a 5+ invul I'm looking forward to using them more again

Paintwork on the Cult Leman Russ has been ticking away nicely, almost finished highlights etc.... just need to weather and "Cultify" this one now.

I've ordered a copy of Dark Imperium box set and will be doing up the plague marines as zerg infested terrans on zerg creep bases, so I'm looking forward to getting that little project underway.

Bring on 8th! I'm running a weekly 40k night at my bros shop, so I'm sure I'll get plenty of games in and some epic stories to share, onwards and upwards!

Hi everyone,

Hope all is well and people are enjoying 8th edition. I've played a few games so far and am really enjoying it, is a lot more streamlined I feel and once we all have a better understanding of the new ruleset we will have some awesome games.

I played against my brother recently who has gotten his hands on a few sets of the Primaris Marines... It was a bit nasty for the marines as I managed to take out his heavy hitting squad in alpha strike and he was left a bit under powered to take out my big bugs... however there was an awesome battle between the swarmlord and the captain, with the captain holding his own and eventually dying once he had smacked the swarmlord down to two wounds.... OUCH!

Also finished up the Leman Russ tank for my Genestealer Cult and I am happy with how it turned out.... I wanted a good weathered look as it is "stolen" equipment and maintenance will be lacking. The hatches are reflections of the carapace pattern on the patriarch and genestealers, and of course the icons, a bit of purple, and some slogans.

Next on the paint list is a squad of Neophyte hybrids while I work on building the Death Guard from the Dark Imperium box set... watch this space

Camkierhi - Thanks for the kudos I'm pretty stoked with how far I've come since starting this little thread.

EDC - Haven't used the Cult in 8th yet, but I did use some genestealers in my nid army for a game... they are awesome again!

I did some experimentation today with hot glue, PVA and super glue to see how I'm going to do the Zerg Creep bases for my deathguard, just waiting for it to dry so i can see which worked best. For those that don't know, I'm looking at doing up my deathguard models as zerg infested terrans from starcraft.

Hi all,

Thanks for the info dsteingass! I was wondering but had never got around to looking into it.

Have laid down the base coats on the first neophyte hybrid squad:

Underneath the skin is based red which has given it a bit of a tinge that relates back to the genestealers et al, also trying a couple of different colour combos to get some random squads as opposed to uniform skin tone.

Other cult related things was building 10 old school (blue plastic) genestealers for the cult and I got my hands on a Cult sentinel that I now need to build.

Also finished some PVA and superglue experiments which have come out nicely so will do a bunch of bases up for my "zerg infested terran" death guard models... I'm hoping to have some photos of this side project soon.

Thanks for reading.

Cheers Knightley.

So I played a game last night. A guy wanted to test a 2000pt Imperial Guard list for a tournament he has this weekend...

I got tabled in turn three, it was a major learning experience.

He had 3 massive squads of conscripts, (142 all up) 14 primaris psykers, and a few special characters which buffed all his conscripts so they could do things like fall back and still shoot, or get more shots off etc. He had the pyskers in two chimeras, and then a back line of three basilisks and two manticores.

He deployed his buffing units (Harken etc) in LOS terrain with congo lines leading to each conscript blob, which was spread out all over the place meaning I couldn't deep strike anywhere in his space. Then the artillery was set up on his board edge with chimeras full of pyskers in the middle of it all.

I got first turn, so decided to deep strike my stuff in on my side, got some first turn charges with genestealers and flying hive tyrant etc... my first turn went well, then he had his first turn and WOW.

So much lasgun fire, which didn't do too much, but then his psykers came spilling out of the chimeras and the smiting began... he spammed the smites and targeted my big guys. Swarmlord went down first and that was denying two.... but when there is 14 psychic attacks coming in, i just didn't have the denial power to cope. What he didn't kill with smites he smashed with manticores and basislisks.

Yeah overall I got tabled, but man I learnt sooooo much from this game. HIs list was well researched and geared towards tournament play... mine was/is still a TAC have fun list that I'm still learning with

So, tell me... with your army how would you try and take down that sort of army?

That sounds horrible.

Not sure how i'd deal with that. ...off the top of my head. Storm Raven spam coupled with Scouts.

Smite has to be on the closest unit. So sacrificial scouts, potentially just sat on objectives (wait for maelstrom objectives to come up) , then sit back snd shoot with Storm Ravens.

Termies with storm bolters drop in once some space has been created with SRs. (???)

Hey EDC,

haha yeah it was pretty horrible, seeing a 3 point conscript now being able to shoot 3-4 times a turn and attack 3 times in combat due to the congo line orders, and then realising there was 140 of them was an awesome meat shield, I killed heaps, just not enough.

I like the idea you have in taking it on, and talking to the guy after the game he did say Storm Ravens could cause him some issues.

I think I messed up and when I saw him spread all over his deployment zone I decided to deep strike my units that could do it in the first turn to get in the fight... perhaps I should have held off and tried to get him to collapse in a bit to make some room for the deep strikers, but trying to stay 9 inches away from that much stuff would have been hard I feel as he is a good player as well. Objectives helped him a bit as well as I needed to get into his deployment as there were two objectives in there doh!

Learned HEAPS from this one game though, so thats always good.

A couple of snaps from the game, first one is overview of the battle after my first turn movement, and the second is what his artillery was looking at.

Those Neophyte plastics are GREAT! Very useful for all sorts of Human types. Glad to see the Guard getting some play! I cant wait to play a game myself, I need a few learning games. He spread out to avoid your missiles. I've noticed that everyone playing against guard fears the artillery for some reason.

Although an obviously very competitive player, (and blooming good on you mate for taking it so well) to be honest it sounds a lot more like what I think meeting a Guard army would be like, a true hail of fire, mass ranks of shots raining in on you. And that many shots are bound to get a few very lucky shots. Many years ago when I used to actually play, on several occasions fielded a fungal wall, i.e. 80 gretchin with their autoguns, hitting on 6's with 6's to wound, they where devastating. People would often laugh at me placing the green wall down, that soon changed to curses as the first round of shooting got under way. Meeting a true guard army should be like hitting a brick wall, no good running straight at it, got to chip away. Concentrated fire to blow holes in it. And only ways to win are to be too big and fast, or be just too many. It will be interesting to hear how these armies fair against a true green tide or a true host of nids. Don't know how it works out, but a wall of Hormagaunts in your face on turn one would probably upset the guard, especially if concentrated in a couple areas. Once in contact the guard would be slaughtered.

Post by: Mad..

Cam - Yeah it was cool seeing the Guard army working that way because it really was the way I imagine them fighting.... overwhelming numbers with some big gun support.

Update time:

Firstly I have finished the first neophyte hybrid squad, this photo doesn't have the basing quite complete, but you get the idea on the models, because that's what you actually look at right? I'm happy with how the skin tones have come out, tried a few different combos to get some differences in squad.

I've also played a bunch of games since last update, the most recent being the first mission of Fate of Konor which is attack/defend, attacker has to have units in opponent half by game end for points and defender gets a point per unit killed, and we played 2000pts, I had a 50/50 mixed army with GSC/Nids, and was the first time the Cult had been on the table in a game.

My opponent deployed really heavy with fire warriors and broadside suits in left hand corner with a ghost keel and fire warrior breacher team holding the right hand side... my counter deployment was pretty stacked on the right hand side/middle. bascially I just stayed away from the massive gunline firebase he had created and smashed through his units on the right side and basically cleaned up in the end game.

13-3 was the final score.

My opponent knows he stuffed up his deployment, next game I reckon he will spread them out a lot more which means I will struggle to get the ambushing units on as easy along with having to run into more fire. He also had some hideous dice rolls early on which probably didn't help him.

The Cult of the Red Saviour was successful in it's first outing with the Leman Russ and Patriarch units really causing some mischief while my tervigon kept the gant squads up (38 replacements come back!) while the hive tyrant absorbed a lot of fire power with 5++ and 5+ FnP while tearing through some wounds on the ghost keel and riptide.

I gave my win to Chaos, cos I figure the need the help, I was the attacker, and I have some Death Guard now days

Coming this week: Another Fate of Konor game, and I'm thinking I'll paint my Magus up now I have the skin tones sorted.

Evening all,

Quick update.

First up, have started work on the Primus for the Cult of the Red Saviour and have laid down base colours:

The lighting is a bit dark, but you get the general idea... also his head and toxin injector hand are being painted off model currently

Second update is I've done experimentation for the Zerg creep bases for the Deathguard project I'm working on in the background:

Basically PVA glue with super glue dropped on top and then I used a toothpick to push the superglue around a little bit, then left it to dry and painted up using purple colours and washes. These were the experiments, and they have come out pretty well. Couple of learnings around how much the PVA shrinks back when the superglue hits it so I'll look at really pushing the PVA to the edges in future. Also will probably use a gloss varnish on top once they are done to give it that slimy look.

Got a game on Wednesday and Sunday this week and should be able to knock out the Primus paintjob this week, so next update should be a good one

Thanks for reading.

Hi all,

Been a fairly productive week for me hobbywise.

Firstly, have almost finished the Primus for the Genestealer cult. Need to do the breather pipe on his face, and some detailing on the face like the eyes etc, then base and done.

Secondly I had my second game ever using some of the Genestealer cult allied with some tyranids. Played against Admech who I haven't played against before so made a couple of errors in target prioritisation

Did I mention the Admech also had a knight It did a heap of work and demolished a few squads... the Magus Mind Controlled it at one point though and it blew up some of the Admech army muhahahahaha, but then it kept killing. The Patriarch held his own against it and did twice as many wounds to the knight, but alas the knight had more wounds so won the fight overall.

The main win condition turned out to be an objective in the back corner of my opponents deployment. Whoever held that at turn five won the game (there were others that neither of us achieved), considering the beating I took from his alpha strike and a couple of errors on my part in what I should shoot next, I still got pretty close to a win... what you see here is the light grey eggs are the objective, and I needed to hack through the models in front to get to it.... alas, not enough wounds done so lost by inches.

Learned a bunch from this game which is always good, like when you mind control an imperial knight, use it to kill the Onager so it can't block your infantry trying to get to objective

Got a couple more games lined up this week and always more painting and modelling to do.

Take care.

Yikes!

Been a bit slack with updates, sorry everyone.

Back now and haven't been idle while I've been gone. Been helping my brother at his store running games every Wednesday and some Sundays for Fate of Konor etc. Chaos won at his shop much to his disappointment haha, but I guess Imperium won overall so he gets the last laugh.

I've been playing a lot, doing a little bit of painting and a lot of collecting and building of new models.... dam addiction to new models! I've got some much to paint again haha and Death Guard has just dropped and New Nids due in November.

I played against my brothers Primaris Chapter, and he threw Roboute at me, he was delicious:

In the same game my Tervigon had three wounds left (bone dice) and had to roll a six to survive the game... check out the red dice:

She then proceeded to spawn more termagants and the nids won the game!

Given the mountain of painting I need to get through I've come up with a bit of a plan. The cult of the Red Saviour isn't growing model wise currently, and I'm about half way through painting the army up, so I've decided I'll push to finish painting the Cult while I build the Deathguard army and get that ready for painting. Then when Nid Dex drops I'll be able to paint a Death guard, then Nid model alternately and get caught back up.

So, I've recently finished the Primus (photo to come next update) and moved onto another unit of Neophyte hybrids:

Once these are done, then Magus and so on.

Thanks for checking in.

Hey dude just had a quick read of your thread, interesting to see how much your painting improved throughout.

And the yellow stippled pattern is just gorgeous, how on earth do you do it?

Cam - Thanks, I have been enjoying the games thus far and am experimenting with all sorts of combos at the moment. Trying a fluffy GSC list tomorrow with just a sprinkling of nid vanguard units like lictors etc, will let you know how it goes.

STG - Nice to hear I'm not the only one who thinks that my painting has improved Sometimes I go back and look at some of my earlier work and it helps me keep trucking along knowing I've gotten better. The stippled yellow is pretty easy, I base coat the plates with Black, then using a gold yellow colour I dab it on with a brush in random splotches and patterns, then finish it with a blue wash into the carapace joints. Easy, but effective!

So today's update I got a good amount of time painting in on the Neopyhte squad, and they are nearing completion!

I have a few more bits and pieces to pick out, like around the lamps and then onto basing. I'm pretty stoked with how these are coming along. Got the recipe down pat now

Till next time, thanks for reading.

Thanks STG, the carapace pattern seems to be the most commented part of the Tyranid army thus far as it is a little bit different, helps that it is nice and easy to do as well!

Finished up the Neophyte Hybrid squad, but just realised I haven't got a photo of them complete for this update haha. I'll get one done for all the neophytes soon, as I need to do an updated cult army shot for the front page anyway.

Have made a start on the Magus, just laying down base colours at this point:

Also had a Crimson Fists army show up on the planet that my Cult was happily taking over, so battle ensued!

They were newer Primaris marines, with a big shiny new dreadnought.

My genestealers got into the back line and apparently they can eat the wind

After a promising start things went a little bit wrong. Was a maelstrom game, and at the top of turn four the Cult was up 8-7 against the marines, but then I made a few tactical errors, and the marines managed to take out everything but my stealers, which weren't enough to capture enough points from objectives, so ended up losing.

Was a really fun game against a nice player, looking forward to playing him again in the future and we are looking at doing a bit of a narrative run.

Thanks for reading.

I dont know if its the lighting, because as you say its only a base colour and a wash, but your skin tones look really good.

do you only recess shade the skin? must steal your recipe, looks awesome!

STG - Maybe it is the light? All I had done at this point wash undercoat black, quick top down spray of white then thin layer of cadian fleshtone and washed with Reikland Fleshshade all over. It does look good though, and it's easy.

Update time, firstly the Magus is almost complete, I am stoked with how the face has come out, I reckon it is my best face yet and the blue/red front of the robes is starting to looks awesome, went a bit cross eyed getting a blue colour gradient onto the tiny little bits that stick into the middle. Also my first shot at doing gems, and I think they look pretty good. Will be better once the gloss coat goes on later.

I also took out all the painted up Cult and gave them an updated army photo (for front page), there was also a cool looking one in the bunch I took, like one neophyte has just noticed the observer and the observer might be about to get into trouble.

"Has that guy got a camera" photo

Last part of update is now that I have multiple armies, and armies that are a PITA to fit into foam (Spikey nids, deathguard etc) I decided to try my hand at a custom made transport/storage option.

I got my hands onto some metal plates which will be awesome draws, then a box has been made with grooves every 2cms or so which allows me to have different heights to the draws as needed.

Slapped some magnets onto the base of my big bugs to test, they hold on pretty well.

And here is a quick look at the overall idea WIP. So depending on what army I will be fielding I can easily change out trays/models and take exactly what I need to each game.

So yeah, will keep you posted on how it goes, I'm looking at adding a handle to the top, a few feet to the bottom and giving it a bit of paint

Thanks for reading.

Hi all,

Have changed the name of this thread as it has definitely turned into more than just Tyranids, so thought I'd try reflect that in the title.

Magus is pretty much done, just needs basing and and a little bit of varnish work on the gems etc, as mentioned above I'm really happy on how this one came out:

I've also decided to do up a test model for the Zerg Infested Terran (ZITs) Deathguard army that I am going to work on, so far base coats and washes done, am doing the armour in pre heresy colours and will make it dirty, rusty etc:

So next update will have a bit more on the test model and hopefully the weathering and rust effects on the armour and weapons.... will see how it goes

Thanks for reading.

STG - Thanks, I like how the magus came out for sure. ZITs = Zerg Infested Terrans, and ZITs is perfect for deathguard

Update time, have completed my first test model for my death guard and here it is:

Have got some stuff to change up a little bit I reckon but overall I'm happy with the outcome, which is good because Mortarion, Typhus and Death Shroud are coming this week.

Hi everyone!

I can't believe it's been almost three months since my last update! Yikes... need to get back onto the bandwagon with updates.

I haven't been idle in the hobby however, I've probably been busier than I ever have.

I've continued to help my brother run the 40k nights at his hobby store, and it is going so well we have had to open up another slot to get all the players through, we are also in the early stages of a narrative campaign which has started well and we have 12 players involved.
I've been playing a lot of games, mainly with my Tyranids, although now that my Death Guard are all at least built I've played a couple of games with them and they are a lot of fun too.

In terms of model stuff... I've built all the Death guard models, so thats Deathshroud, Blightlord Terminators, Typhus, Mortarion, 60 poxwalkers, Foetid Blightdrone, Plagueburst crawler and I think that's about it. I've also built and magnetised a tyrannofex/tervigon and the tyrannofex has performed well in his first few official games. I've also been slowly but surely getting some painting done.

First up I've finished the plague marines for my Zerg Infested Terran army:

Now that I have sussed out the scheme and done the experimentation on these guys I have made a start on Mortarion who will be similar style, just bigger obviously hehe.

I've completed his base but cant seem to find the photo I took. Also finished up another hive tyrant and carnifex for the Hive Fleet.

So, happy new year all, hope you had an awesome holiday period and I look forward to hearing from you, best of luck with your hobby endeavours in 2018!

Thanks for reading.

Hi Desubot,

STG - Yeah Mortarion is intense to paint I'm finding, but he is coming along and I'm confident I can make him look good.

Knightley - Well, it's coming along mate, shouldn't be long before it's done haha!

Mortarion WIP 2, have completed his base and the smokey stuff that attaches him to the base so have glued him on now as have gotten far enough that I can get up under him. Geeting closer to the point where I start throwing washes onto him to take him to the next level...

I also played a game the other night against one of the better players in New Zealand, he was daemons with Angrath, Lord of Change, Bloodthirster, Demon Prince, and another big chicken thing with a bunch of troops... so quite a tough list I thought... I just lost (two points in it), but he only had three wounds left on the table and I had heaps, I almost tabled him but I needed to roll a 3+ once on two dice.... I rolled snake eyes which lost me the game.

Was HEAPS of fun and I learned a lot from the game, so looking forward to a rematch.

Evening all,

First up, the game I played last week I used a Carnifex with 4x devourers w/ brainleech worms and enhanced senses... it was unpainted and it did a lot of work, and was a contender for MVP, so I figured it could get the next paintjob, plus I haven't painted any hive fleet Ngaro for a while, so thought it was about time!

WIP1: It is magnetised, weapons will be done in a batch later.

Also played a game against Knightley yesterday.

Cult of the Red Savior vs Necrons 1500pts, The Scouring, Frontline assault deployment.

I got first turn and got ready to alpha strike the blobs of warriors to try and whittle them down... I proceeded to then roll ALOT of ones... so much for alpha strike, ah well got some genestealers in reserve , keep them off for a while.

Then Knightley's Necrons tried to capitalise on my dice fails, and he didn't do much better, although he did get the chimera, but all that did was annoy the passengers!

From there charges were made from necrons, the cult met the charge and a bloody melee ensued for a good chunk of game in middle of table...

However, the thing that tipped the balance was a ambushing 20 man unit of genestealers (I have never run a squad this big as I was worried that they would get blasted off the table) the proceeded to takeout a ghost ark in one round of combat, then they killed some destroyers on their way across the board to the melee that was STILL going in the middle:

Knightley fell back from combat so he could do some overwatch...

How will it go?

Well, the Rockgrinder did the first charge and survived the overwatch... so everything else was free to get in...

This happened:

This was end of turn five, we rolled and the game continued, and basically all that happened was another warrior blob took vengeance on the stealer squad and blew all but two of them off the table, which is exactly what I was worried about taking a big blob of them, however in this game they did a lot of work for me and were the difference....

11-3 win thanks to 3 squads of neophytes just babysitting points lobbing grenades ineffectually at things.

Thanks Knightley for the great game! We both learned a lot and I look forward to next game.

Post by: Mad..

Hi Dakka,

So a few pages back I got a unbuilt carnifex in a trade but it didn't have a base so it hasn't had much happen since being built.... however I got given a custom resin base by a guy I know as an experiment to see how his product goes. I painted it and the fex up and came up with this:

Carnifex #2 is all complete now, except arms obviously as they are magnetised and I'll be doing a big batch paint of a heap of magnetised arms soon. The photo isn't the greatest either as we had stormy weather over the last few days and the light levels were really low so doesn't show the colour depth on the chest or eyes for example... I promise it looks better in real life haha.

Another thing I did was do a dark grey around the bottom of the base.... I've realised that my bases are pure red, so thought I'd try a bit of contrast which I think works well so I'll go back and paint all the rims of existing models the same colour.... what do you guys think?

So next update should have Carnifex #3 complete as he went on "pause" while I finished #2 hehe.

Found this photo in my phone from the game against Knightley the other day and thought it looked cool.... like the Eldar objective is distorting the area.

Thanks for reading!

the 'fex looks sufficiently beastly to me. I'm a fan of your carapace scheme and the gloopy look of its body. Your base scheme is good and the grey works surprisingly well considering how unorthodox it is as a colour for your bases. Would a graveyard earth-esque base rim contrast the red enough? Something towards the greener and bluer side of the brown spectrum (I think the modern paint equivalent might be baneblade brown or something similar)?

As always its morbidly fascinating seeing other players battling it out on Knightley's table! I believe we played a day apart from each other last week.

Hey all,

LDP - I was thinking a brown of some type might be better, I like your idea of a cooler brown too, I might try it on the next one and see how it comes out. And yes talking with Knightley I was in the day after you to play against him

Cam - Yeah the picture was different that's why I thought I'd share it. Wonder how I did it haha.

STG - the eyes have been painted, they are purple in line with the rest of the hive. However it's not showing up at all in this photo

Knightley - 24x S6 shots? What's scary about that? And that's vanilla dakka hehe

Hi everyone,

Hope everyone has had a good productive hobby week, I know I have!

So first up I completed the third (and last for now) Carnifex... once again the weather is really cloudy at taking this photo so it is really muted colour wise and can't see the purple in the eyes etc. I've also experimented with Brown around the rim of the base... I don't think I'll stick with it, think I'm leaning towards leaving them as red for now hehe.

Next up, I've got one of the original metal broodlords from 4th edition... and he has been left behind somewhat in the coolness factor. I got hold of some hero bases from GW and decided to do this for him to stand upon:

I took one of the 40mm size ones, grabbed a spare space hulk genestealer and cut the back of it down so I could stuff it in the pipe, I also had a spare tyranid/cult symbol which I glued over the top of the aquila that is on the platform. I also made one up for the Lich Knig model that Knightley painted up for me, and it will be painted up like he is standing on an icy platform... this is what it kind of looks like with them standing on it:

So, will clean up lines and get the bases painted up so I can actually attach the models properly in the near future,

Cheers for reading.

Cam - Heh yeah I thought it was interesting seeing them in a line up. The new start collecting box has been good for me as I wanted the latest broodlord, and it came with Mawloc which I don't have and some more genestealers, which are always useful.

STG - Thanks, am in a campaign at local gaming shop at the moment and we get battle requisition points for painting and building models which we can spend on certain perks so it has been good motivation.

Amazingturtles - I've always liked his pose, either wants hugs or "come at me bro"

Knightley - I'm starting to think a bunch of them running around would be more effective than the big bugs in the HQ space.

You sir are starting to get annoying, not only are these beautiful, but you are giving me an itch to get the rather large box of nids I have stashed away out. I can't afford a sidetrack like that, bad enough as it is without you and your pretty bugs!

STG - I'm looking at matching it with the red planet basing the rest of the fleet has, although I should be able to get a bit more detailed with this piece due to size of rocks and the barrel on it.

Cam - Thanks for the kind words. I'm sorry I'm distracting you as you are doing some awesome work on the GUO and scenery and I would hate to hold that up You'll be happy to see below that there is a slight pause on painting the tyranids for now haha.

So, Foetid Bloat Drone is underway to join the ranks of painted death guard, some base coats starting to go down. (grey skin, charcoal turbines, purple creep etc)

And I couldn't help myself so I built the Mawloc from the SC tyranids box set, be a while until it sees paint though.

Thanks for reading.

Oh hey, a Mawloc, didn't the last time I saw one of those, his head got stuck in the bottom of a rhino and had its brains blown out by the driver?
