Because I love Firestorm Armada and Planetfall imo is an amazing game with awesome potential to make some great sci-fi campaigns for by mixing the two (As well as having gorgeous models), here is a bump with the next newest render of the Relthoza Tank hunters!

Good lord, those new pics really remind me of that old Kenner toyline, Megaforce. Especially that Hawker Industries set. I think I really will need to buy some of these.

The 2 player intro box with Aquan and Directorate core helixs are up for sale atm, with the other 4 factions Core Helixs going on sale on the 10th of December. After that at a currently known, guessing Jan/Feb 2015, the other helixs will start to gradually come, with all the funky toys such as the Tank hunters, Mk2 Heavies, Command Vehicles, Leviathans etc.

Speaking of coming soon releases for 2015, the Aquan Mk2 Heavy posted today!

(Spartan) Neil said on the Element 270 podcast that wave 3 (i.e. the wave after the December 10 releases) will have strike helixes, which means leviathans! That wave will probably be announced next month, and I reckon we'll see the robot reinforcements in either Jan or Feb 2015.

Got my starter box on Friday! very pleased with the moulds and the rules are great. Also like the campaign book. I could not get round to any proper prep but I have decided to break from my norm and paint the tiny troops first before going straight for the larger cool toys first.
I do have one question though. Are the templates supposed to be perferated? Mine are not and i will have to cut them out myself. I will have to be very careful on the blast radius!

Sigh, mine is in Auckland airport held by customs. I was a few dollars over the GST customs limit so have to pay a fee that costs 1/4 of the package value!

So angry.

At least my package will be here soon I guess.

Got my half of the set (Directorate Core Helix ) Its all nice, though I will have to heat up the bases to bend them flat as they curve up.

While I get they wanted good terrain, its pretty goofy how they did it with the plastic and you slot over it the cutouts. Think DZC has better terrain. I also don't quite understand why the infantry bases have a few guys molded on it, but then you add 1-2 metal guys per base. Would have liked it all molded on it.

I am interested in buying a Directorate Core Helix if anyone who got it and doesn't want it. Let me know in a PM!

Spartan Games: Firestorm Planetfall (January releases updated OP 01/06/15) @ 2014/11/30 19:05:04

Post by: Swastakowey

Terrain is great and easy. But a lot of people painted the acrylic pieces before they put it together.

The reason we have spare bits on the bases is because soon there will be rules added for heavy weapons or something and other infantry upgrades. Hence why you probably got 2 empty bases that you dont need.

I think its preparation for future infantry rules coming with the faction rules very soon.

Yeah, I copy pasted the url into the address bar directly and then it worked. Odd, but maybe it was because I was on my mobile. I do like the dynamics they managed to work in with some unique mechanics like Works Raptor penalizing your opponent for playing command cards and the sorylian's having great long range and weaker effective range. I must say, I'm very excited to see this grow, but I have noticed a couple mistakes in the ORBATs. Oh well, at least they're out.

Yea they will be updated as needed. At least. Plus they are free so I dont mind one bit.

Yea I recommend two. Not only does that leave you with a full helix it also gives you terrain and so on.

Plus they all look super cool...

Exactly.

Dropped several hundred bucks and painted Uncharted Seas, weeks before they wiped it out of stores and off the map.

Tell me about Dystopian Wars. Suddenly the unit size gets changed and you only get boxes and have to order blisters directly from UK.

Uncharted seas is still avail and the rules are complete. I know that gw has trained everyone to believe that no ruleset is ever finished, but thats not true. They even updated all the models from the original sculpts.

The move to boxes was made for retailers. Spartan does not have huge market share so it makes sense to decrease to the retailer space necessary to sell the game.

Did they ever finish the Sky Pirates faction? I was not a big fan of the revised Dragon Lords models tbh.....

Uncharted basically started getting a revamp but part way along Dystopian Wars started flying off the shelves. It basically sapped Spartan Games resources heavily and Firestorm and Uncharted were both hit with delays. Uncharted was already a little on the rocks being as its game system was older and less refined and it never really got its head up again

They still sell it just only direct orders only. They did get the Sky Pirates out and a few new ships, but some factions like the Dragon Lords never got a full army revamp (all the models got put to the new sharper moulds which made a big difference; but you can see when you compare old to new Dragon Lord models that the design team can clearly do better now)

My gut feeling is that Spartan want to and will revisit Uncharted, but it won't be for a long while - Dystopian is doing strong and Firestorm is also doing well now too.

They've a great creative team and can make very good, well priced models - but as a smaller company they've got to be careful not to overload their plate - otherwise they scupper their own resources too much.

I have to say - me and a friend started playing the 2 player set maybe about 2 months ago in the store. We went to each other and pretty much said hey... what the hell lets buy it its $50 down the middle. Needless to say not only did we enjoy it, but now we have 9 firestorm players in the store at one time (and more interested), to the point where we actually do not have enough tables.... 0_0

The manager actually just ordered planetfall last week, we maybe had I say 10 boxes.... we are now down to 2 and more people are ordering them. Haven't played the game yet but bought myself a Dindrenzi force (to match the Dindrenzi fleet.... remember Dramos) and to also match the 28mm Dindrenzi gunship I have (which acts as a great dropship for 10mm)

Played a little practice game against myself using some proxies and I got to say - it is a fun little quick game.

Drop pod nyx are nasty as all hell.

Drop Pod Nyx, the suicide Space Marines of Planetfall essentially. Planetfall is definately a good game that deserves a lot more attention than it's getting on places like Dakka, Warseer etc, and it's only looking to get better.

Just playing Core vs Core is fun enough and each army feels balanced with it's own flavour, but the game really starts to shine the higher you go, Core Helix plus about 2-3 support helixs looks to be sweet spot currently. Lots of variety, lots of room for making army construction choices that will matter to how you play, and lots of fun!

And to answer about Leviathans, Spartan have said the Strike Helix and Recon Helixs are coming next (Strike being one with Leviathans) and are going to apparently be launched at same time together, so will suddenly have a surge in variety! Not stated yet when they'll come, but late March is probably a good guess, hopefully will get news any time now.

Picked up a couple of core boxes (Relthoza and Sorylian) a month or so ago. The miniatures are beautiful, casts are great and they are super easy to assemble. I haven't tried the rules yet, but people seem to be enjoying them over on Spartan's forums.

I'm really interested to see where they go with it, as right now all of the factions seem somewhat similar. The leviathans and command barges seem to be the thing that will really start to make each race standout, so I'm really waiting to see what will be available before I really jump in.

The first batch of Leviathans have been scheduled for release at the end of March. Behold, new shiny for the Terrans, Dindrenzi and Directorate, respectively.

The RRP of £55 ($85) is a bit steep, but retailer discounting will hopefully take that down to something more doable.

Planetfall is actually an excellent game. I wish we had a better player-base because it is rare that a game play as wonderfully as I hope it will.

As it stands, I keep buying and supporting three armies so that I can have an extra army around for players to "borrow", but that also proves frustrating as i'm the sole guy supporting the game.

Still, if I can find the Leviathan boxes for $60 after discounts, i'll probably go in for all three.

It's ok, I'm that guy for every miniatures game I own.

AT43, Confrontation: Age of Ragnorok, 40k, Epic 40k, Battlefleet Gothic, Necromunda.....one of the things keeping me from Planetfall is the need for me to fund (and paint!) multiple armies to play the game.

Since I have played it for a while I can help you out here. None of the races play the same - NONE. Give you a great example, my Dindrenzi reroll 1's in cqb and tend to be hard to hit and hurt, but we need to be shotgun close to diminish peoples shields effectively - where s terrans re roll 1's in shield and are easier to hurt but holy hell their weapons have a lot of different rules (corrosive shots, terror shots, scatter.....GAH). In contrast with the sorylians which would like to be at very long range bombarding their foe with artilery and long range shots - however in effective range they have shotguns that re roll 1's which can hurt me if I get close so on and so forth. Dindrenzi infantry may only have 4 bases but we are the scariest in the game, where as Sorylian lizards can take out skimmers and infantry from buildings like no ones business.

I like the fact that: one, the races play differently from one another and require very different tactics; two, are actually DIFFERENT from their firestorm armada counterparts.

Absolutely, the races do all play differently to each other, and those differences will continue to be highlighted as each new type of helix (assault, field support etc.) is released. For example, Aquan Stingrays (anti-air batteries) are kind-of useful now with a few flyers in the game, but when the core factions start to get air helices they'll obviously come into their own.

Planetfall is very much in a state of flux where matchups and playstyles are concerned, and it's an exciting time! Every new release shakes things up in some way or other.

Yes, they get close and unleash a lot of deadly firepower before getting into assault. They also degrade armour very well.

I have to face them and they are ferocious in effective range. They can also hack your forces which suck really bad.

I can definitely relate to that! It's always about finding that one other person who wants to play, but when you do start playing, things start to happen. Three months ago nobody played any kind of Firestorm here in London (at least, there weren't any groups that I was aware of), although I had played a couple of times at my FLGS in 2014. So, a bit selfishly, I posted on my FLGS's Spartan Games Facebook group to see if there was any interest in more regular Firestorm play, because I wanted to play regularly. One of the guys on the group showed an interest in playing Firestorm Armada, so we decided to arrange a game.

We kicked things off in mid-January with only two of us, and as things now stand there are four of us with another two guys possibly joining in soon, playing Armada most weekends whenever we can dodge other events and grab a table (the FLGS is the only one in London with decent wargaming tables and it gets pretty busy).

We're not playing Planetfall yet, but there has been some interest and it may well kick off soon. I had a game recently at the store with a friend who was staying in London for a few days, and people would walk by our table and take a closer look at the models. It's all about getting the game on the table in the first place, and sometimes you just have to say "Screw it, I want to play, so I'm going to be the builder".
