Picked up a couple of core boxes (Relthoza and Sorylian) a month or so ago. The miniatures are beautiful, casts are great and they are super easy to assemble. I haven't tried the rules yet, but people seem to be enjoying them over on Spartan's forums.
I'm really interested to see where they go with it, as right now all of the factions seem somewhat similar. The leviathans and command barges seem to be the thing that will really start to make each race standout, so I'm really waiting to see what will be available before I really jump in.

The first batch of Leviathans have been scheduled for release at the end of March. Behold, new shiny for the Terrans, Dindrenzi and Directorate, respectively.
The RRP of £55 ($85) is a bit steep, but retailer discounting will hopefully take that down to something more doable.

Planetfall is actually an excellent game. I wish we had a better player-base because it is rare that a game play as wonderfully as I hope it will.
As it stands, I keep buying and supporting three armies so that I can have an extra army around for players to "borrow", but that also proves frustrating as i'm the sole guy supporting the game.
Still, if I can find the Leviathan boxes for $60 after discounts, i'll probably go in for all three.

It's ok, I'm that guy for every miniatures game I own.
AT43, Confrontation: Age of Ragnorok, 40k, Epic 40k, Battlefleet Gothic, Necromunda.....one of the things keeping me from Planetfall is the need for me to fund (and paint!) multiple armies to play the game.

Since I have played it for a while I can help you out here. None of the races play the same - NONE. Give you a great example, my Dindrenzi reroll 1's in cqb and tend to be hard to hit and hurt, but we need to be shotgun close to diminish peoples shields effectively - where s terrans re roll 1's in shield and are easier to hurt but holy hell their weapons have a lot of different rules (corrosive shots, terror shots, scatter.....GAH). In contrast with the sorylians which would like to be at very long range bombarding their foe with artilery and long range shots - however in effective range they have shotguns that re roll 1's which can hurt me if I get close so on and so forth. Dindrenzi infantry may only have 4 bases but we are the scariest in the game, where as Sorylian lizards can take out skimmers and infantry from buildings like no ones business.
I like the fact that: one, the races play differently from one another and require very different tactics; two, are actually DIFFERENT from their firestorm armada counterparts.

Absolutely, the races do all play differently to each other, and those differences will continue to be highlighted as each new type of helix (assault, field support etc.) is released. For example, Aquan Stingrays (anti-air batteries) are kind-of useful now with a few flyers in the game, but when the core factions start to get air helices they'll obviously come into their own.
Planetfall is very much in a state of flux where matchups and playstyles are concerned, and it's an exciting time! Every new release shakes things up in some way or other.

Pffffttttt. The Dindrenzi do not need your petty AA guns to win - we use our superior fire power to beat you down.

Yes, they get close and unleash a lot of deadly firepower before getting into assault. They also degrade armour very well.
I have to face them and they are ferocious in effective range. They can also hack your forces which suck really bad.

It's like the Aquans always say, "You can't shoot what isn't there".

The Trojan cyber warfare tank is always underrated at first, but it can do a bunch of nasty things.

I can definitely relate to that! It's always about finding that one other person who wants to play, but when you do start playing, things start to happen. Three months ago nobody played any kind of Firestorm here in London (at least, there weren't any groups that I was aware of), although I had played a couple of times at my FLGS in 2014. So, a bit selfishly, I posted on my FLGS's Spartan Games Facebook group to see if there was any interest in more regular Firestorm play, because I wanted to play regularly. One of the guys on the group showed an interest in playing Firestorm Armada, so we decided to arrange a game.
We kicked things off in mid-January with only two of us, and as things now stand there are four of us with another two guys possibly joining in soon, playing Armada most weekends whenever we can dodge other events and grab a table (the FLGS is the only one in London with decent wargaming tables and it gets pretty busy).
We're not playing Planetfall yet, but there has been some interest and it may well kick off soon. I had a game recently at the store with a friend who was staying in London for a few days, and people would walk by our table and take a closer look at the models. It's all about getting the game on the table in the first place, and sometimes you just have to say "Screw it, I want to play, so I'm going to be the builder".
