So would you recommend 'Ard Coat for say black shoulder pads to give them a bit more shine or for black blades of weapons when trying to do an Obsidian type of effect?

The next fist may not be as ornate but I bet you'll still do a bang up job and I can't wait to see it.

Hey Red!

That deathco marine looks really good

I noticed the shiny droplets: I'd look into using more than just 'ardcoat like the one in the center of your jump pack.

Have you considered doing highlights to the red crosses on top of the jump pack and chainsword?

Cheers!

If you want the surface to look highly polished & shiny then a thin coat of 'Ard Coat would work great. I also use 'Ard Coat on all of my power weapon blades as well, gives the 'steel' of the blade that polished look to me. I hope to get some painting in tomorrow evening. First day off in 6 days where I can get some painting in.

I hope this helps and hopefully the painting is going well on your end Adamski. Merry Christmas to you also.

I do use more than just 'Ard Coat on the usual gems, but I didn't want those blood drops to be gems per-se, but just polished decorative stones mounted to the top of the thruster nacelles. I have planned on getting some brighter red for some edge highlights down the road, but it's going to have to be after Christmas before I get any.

Looking forward to seeing more of your Fists in the near future Teban, and Merry Christmas to you also.

Great job so far, I'm looking forward to seeing the finished piece. I've also decided to mock up my own Capt. Sendini as 5 is one of my lucky numbers, lol.

Yay more 5th Company representation! Glad to see you're working up a Captain Sendini of your own there Lestat.

Work over the last couple of weeks has stymied pretty hard. I've gotten the base of my next Death Co. marine finished up and ready, but haven't had a chance to start on the mini itself as yet beyond getting the black basecoat spraypainted onto it. I'll be hopefully getting a little work in on the mini this weekend, but likely won't be able to get any real solid painting work till next week some time once things calm down from the New Year and holidays.

I'll also be working on the next few Tactical Marines in the near future as well once I finish off a few more Death Co. Marines (goal is to get five of them painted before I move on to the Tactical Squad). Trying to paint these up in batches of five models to help prevent feeling overwhelmed by models left to paint.

More to come soon. Happy New Year folks and I'll update more in the new year soon! Take it easy for now.

Hey Adamski! Happy New Year to you as well

Got a little something special in the mail today, a little Christmas Present to myself.

Lemartes, Guardian of the Lost. I have the old school Lemartes, and MUCH prefer this sculpt to the previous one. I'll be putting down a base coat in the near future, and will likely also be using a plastic Death Company jump pack in lieu of the metal one on him as well to help prevent him being any more top heavy than he already is.

Looking forward to painting him up and completing the Characters I'll be using for the time being, at least until I have a chance to convert up a Sanguinary High Priest, and also strip/re-paint my Mephiston and Dante miniatures.

Would be awesome to be able to get a full complement of Command Characters built/converted up and painted for my 5th Battle Company. Hopefully I'll make good headway on that soon enough.

More to come soon. Take it easy guys.

Lemartes? Very nice, I'm sure you'll do a cracking job on him.

Talking of Blood Angel characters - have you any interest in the new-ish Blood Angels Chaplain with Jump Pack? Probably not that you now have Lemartes but you got any views on the model itself?

I also treated myself to a little something from GW but can't collect it til next Saturday.

I think with your skills you could convert up a really cool Sanguinary High Priest.

Thank ya Adamski I've begun work on the powerfist Death Company marine last night, getting the first layer of black laid down on all the component parts over the black primer coat. A tedious and somewhat time consuming process, but a necessary one all the same. I'll be starting work on the legs in short order and progressing upward to the torso, head, and arms in that order.

Once this model is finished I'll decide if I want to continue to work on Death Company and get the first bank of five finished, or begin work on Lemartes.

As for the new BA specific Chaplain, I do love the model as a whole but certain parts of it leave me rather flummoxed. Specifically the wings are just strange to me, looking more like Eldar swooping hawk wings than a space marine jump pack. Also I find the way the model's foot is attached to the basing odd, as it doesn't look natural or is somehow off.. I can say I LOVE the helmet and armor overall, had this model existed before I got started on him, would have been a strong contender for the base model I used for my Captain Sendini conversion with a different weapon, jump pack, and weapons.

Glad to hear you've got a new treat to work on soon. I hope you get your hands on it next Saturday.

And yea, I'm sorely tempted to do a full blown kitbash of the Sanguinary High Priest but I LOVE the plastic version that GW came out with not too long ago. Such an excellent base model, I'd be hard pressed to do better with a kitbash honestly. We'll see, that project is a ways off at this point. I've still got to get through the following:

9 more tactical marines
2 more Death Company
Lemartes
A BA Furioso Dreadnought
5 Scouts
A Dreadnought Drop Pod
A Drop Pod for the Tactical Squad
A 5 man Assault Squad

Once I'm through that, I'll be looking at getting either a Storm Raven, or if funds allow, a Storm Eagle from Forge World to serve as a centerpiece model for my army.

That's not even getting into the second Tactical Squad & dedicated Drop Pod I need, or the second half of the Assault Squad I'll need to purchase later too.

So much to do, and buy, so little time and money.

More to come later. Take it easy for now.

I just built my first drop pod before xmas, it was definitely not straightforward, but it is in 3 sub-assemblies now so I can paint it (fins + engine, baseplate + doors, centre console + seats/straps).

I really want a dreadnought drop pod now

Also, I have a storm eagle, and really would rather have a storm raven

Thanks for the luck, I'll need it. I've actually built one pod already but wound up selling it since my BA were decidedly placed on the back burner until recently. I will likely wind up having at least four to six drop pods in total once I get the full Battle Company built, not counting the Dreadnought Pod. So yea, thankfully I have several friends with airbrushes, which will help getting the major base coats laid down tremendously.

Yea you gotta paint the pod in stages to make it look right, I learned that the hard way when I put my one together a few years back. I highly recommend the dread pod also, it's beefier and MUCH easier to assemble. My buddy has one and it is a cool piece of kit.

May I ask, why do you not like the Storm Eagle as opposed to the Storm Raven? Any particular reason? Is it the rules, or the visual of the model?
Just curious, as I haven't made any purchases yet obviously but I would love to get some info on the Storm Eagle. I prefer the visual of that model over the unmodified Storm Raven. That said, I hope to get a Chapter House Storm Raven modification kit if I wind up going with the Storm Raven also, as I MUCH prefer the way it looks compared to the stock model.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll catch y'all soon, take it easy for now.

Gotcha.

I'm not up on most of the Storm Eagle's rules other than it can carry up to 20 models, or 10 bulky models, which is a big plus.

My main sticking point is going to be if I can get my hands on a Chapter House Storm Raven extension kit or not. Hopefully in the coming months I can find one and get it. If I can I'll likely go the Storm Raven route in lieu of the Storm Eagle. We'll see I suppose.

Thanks for the info and take it easy.

Finally, an update!

Getting back at it in the new year this month. Been hectic for me, but things are finally starting to slow enough for me to catch my breath and get some paint on my Death Company.

Here's the progress I've made tonight:

I hope to make some more good headway tomorrow night, putting the paint brushes down for the moment though.

Take it easy and further updates will be forthcoming soon if life doesn't throw too many hurdles in the way. Thanks for looking.

Hey Red~!

Lovely gems and wings!

Those legs look really well so far. On his right leg, you can see a square panel with a small 'button'. I cant see from the light, but it seems as if you didnt highlight it. Usually I do a thin highlight on those panels and they look well

Regarding the purity seal, to me it looks like an old purity seal - which, considering they get those right before battle, looks a bit odd to me.

Hey Teban, thank you sir!

Firstly, that panel is high lighted, I just got a little heavy-handed with the follow up wash that darkened it down in that spot. I'll touch it up later when I'm highlighting other portions of the model as I continue. Appreciate the heads up sir.

Regarding the Purity Seal, some of those are given before each battle, others are given at the start of a campaign, which can last months or even years. In my mind, this particular marine received this particular Oath/Purity Seal at the start of the campaign and he then, months later, fell to the Black Rage and was inducted into the Death Company. The seal remained behind, attached where it had been placed months before.

I like my Purity Seals to be somewhat weathered, and old looking, lends a subtle sense of wear to the armor as it were.

Thanks again Teban, looking forward to seeing more updates on your Fists soon.

Take it easy.

One more update to show the third member of the Death Company finished up. Had a lot of fun with this mini and modeling the pose up. I was a little iffy on the helmet at first but figured I'd give it a try, and actually really like it after painting it and getting it modeled up.

Please tell me what you guys think.

And the three finished Death Company together. Pardon the poor lighting, I'm still learning how to use this new camera. The pictures are a little yellow except for the one but hopefully the detail can be seen alright.

Two more squad members to go. About to begin cleaning and prepping the next one now. Take it easy and thanks for looking.

Update! No pictures yet, but some will be forthcoming soon.

Work has begun on the next Death Company Marine. I'm going to try and knock out all five members, then finish up with my Lemartes and move on to some Tactical and Scout Marines to get my troops selection fleshed out. Then, I'll try and work on a Dreadnought, or a Drop Pod, and continue to chip away at Angels slowly but surely.

At present, I've gotten the next DC marine basecoated black, and will be beginning work on the base in short order before moving on to the mini itself.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now.

Thanks for that EDC!

I really like how all these DC are turning out on their poses and with the color palate I'm using.

The current quandary I'm facing is how to paint up my scout marines. I don't know if I want to paint their armor the traditional red with khaki fatigues, or if I want to do a camoflage scheme with them. Still working that out at present.

We'll see, for now I'm working on Death Company and hope to have some forward progress on them soon. More to come shortly. Take it easy for now.

Thanks for that! I wanted him to look 'sure footed' and weighty. Glad you like him. I hope I can make the rest of the squad look as good, and intend to mix in some bits from other kits to make the squad interesting & dynamic. My next step after finishing up the Death Company will be Tactical marines. I'm really looking forward to getting started on them next, as painting black is growing slowly more tedious.

Look forward to more soon. Hopefully I'll get a little work in over the next couple of days. Fingers crossed.

Finally an update!

Work has begun on the 4th Death Company marine last night. Here's the progress so far:

I got the base finished and also have the legs mostly finished as well outside of a few highlighting touchups and painting the rope on the right thigh, plus final gem detail work. Tonight I hope to get the legs finished, and then get the torso painted as well, fingers crossed.

I'll go ahead and get this one knocked out and then paint up one more DC marine, then move on to painting my Lemartes up so I have this squad finished and can move on to tactical marines I hope.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now.

Hey Evildrcheese,

I'm leaning toward going slate grey fatigues and mottled grey armor with some black mixed in and a splash of red on one shoulder. That way they look like they're 'camo cloaked' without having to tack a camo cloak on them.

That's what I'm leaning toward anyway. We'll see what I wind up doing.

Thanks for the suggestion, and I'll post pictures up once I get started on them.

Yea, whups.. I'll be sure to crop a little better in the near future when I post my next update. My bad on that end.

Thanks for the kudos. And sadly my points are a bit less than I'd like, as I'm really trying to take my time and paint each model to the best of my (limited) ability.

I've completed:

A Jump Pack Captain (Aedus Sendini)
A Jump Pack Librarian
Five Honor Guard
One Tactical Marine (Heavy Flamer, test mini for my tactical squads)
Three Death Company

That's it so far. I'm about 1/3 finished with the 4th Death Company Marine, and then will move on to the 5th squad member, before painting Lemartes and starting work on some Tactical Marines and Scout Marines. I also have a Drop Pod, a Dreadnought Drop Pod, and a Dreadnought to assemble and paint.

Lots to do, and I'm inching my way along slowly. The goal is to have the Death Company and Lemartes finished up by the end of February, and then hopefully have the first half of a tactical squad wrapped up by Mid march so I can knock out the Scouts in short order by April and start work on the second half of the Tactical Squad box. Obviously this is best case scenario and I doubt I will maintain that pace working two jobs at present, but I will give it the ole college try in any case.

More updates to come. Take it easy for now.

Gotten the mini close to finished, sans one shoulder pad and the jump pack. I'll be starting work on the final shoulder pad shortly after I post this up and hope to have further progress on the mini between shifts over this weekend.

Here's the pose, and mostly finished mini:

Very happy with the pose so far. I'm really enjoying posing these minis to appear to be vaulting forward into melee. The squad as a whole is very dynamic and that's been a real treat to see come together so far. Once this minis is finished I'll have one more Death Company mini to paint up and then I'll move on to Lemartes to round out the squad.

"Slow and Steady". That's what I tell myself when I look at the fact that I still have to paint the entirety of the BaC set, and 10 Assault Marines, and 10 Sternguard, and 5 Scouts for my Ultramairnes. And then 20 Guardsmen for my Imperial Guard. It's how I keep my sanity

Hey man, awesome blog. A word of advice, thin your red paint down a bit, and try to do 2 layers of edge highlighting, for example, first layer of grey, followed by a mix of grey and white closer to the edges and sharpest parts of the armor. Cheers.

Thanks for the tips Marksolo, and I will mention I do thin my paints, (Using a paint palette) and some of the blemishes are a result of baubles in the black spray primer I'm using for the basecoat, though sometimes it does get a little thick without me realizing it if I've been painting for a while. So always a good thing to remind myself to keep the water ready to thin the paint I'm currently using.

I'm going for a minimal highlighting on the black, and trying to achieve a matte finish on them with washes and such.

My reasoning for this is to create a very stark contrast between the non-death company marines in the force, and their black raging brethren.

The Tactical Marines, Scouts, Command Squad, Devestators and Assault marines I intend to paint will have a lot of gold decoration and bright white details.

By contrast, the Death Company will have a darker, more sinister look to them. Dull, dingy, but still possessing the bright white to tie them to the rest of the army. The goal is to try to show, visually, that they are no longer what they once were. Taken by madness and rage, their armor painted matte black before being given their wargear and loosed upon the battlefield for one last battle, to die selling their lives as dearly as they can before they completely descend into madness.

All that being said, I'm going to be trying to knock out the jump pack for this fourth death company marine tonight and get this mini finished up so I can start the fifth and final member of this first bank of 5 Death Company models I'm working on. More updates to come.

Thanks, and take it easy for now.

Finally, an update. It took ENTIRELY too long to find time to paint one damn jump pack, but I've done it, and have begun progress on the fifth (and final for now) Death Company marine.

Without further ado, here's the most recent completed miniature.

I'm going to try and power through this last DC marine as quickly as I can and get started on a special project mini afterward. Going to let it be a surprise.

Thanks for looking folks, and look for more updates to come in short order.

For me, Death Company kits are a nightmare to paint. Sooo much blood iconography to paint. Which is why they're in my "will finish, someday" pile. Great job so far though, Red.

The trick for me at least is to mix Death Company bits in with regular Assault Marine bits to get a full 10 man squads worth of models with plenty of BA iconography interspersed throughout the squad. I also will note I have a personal preference for having a model with a Jump Pack actually have the belts attaching it to the torso of the marine wearing it. This isn't in every case, of course, but I generally do prefer that aesthetic. I even converted my Sanguinary Novitiate for the command squad to have the jump pack belt torso with the narthecium vials and hoses on the waist of the model so that the Command Squad member would have everything modeled on correctly.

Thanks so much for the kudos, I'm about halfway finished with the fifth death company marine now. Going to keep plugging away at it and hopefully finish it up soon.

Take it easy for now.

Looking good Red Thirst. Totally agree that you need to mix the DC kit with the std assault marine kit otherwise the bling is just too much.

Thanks EDC, and you too War Kitten! I agree, you get a LOT more mileage out of the kits if you intersperse the torsos and such throughout other squads. Also spreads the bling a lot more evenly across the army as well.

That all being said I've made good progress moving forward. I'm about 1/3 finished with the fifth and final (for now) Death Co. marine WIP. I'm down to finishing up the arms, shoulder pads, and of course the jump pack.

Here's the progress:

I can't say enough good things about these bases by the way.

Very good quality and a breeze to paint up. They're also solid so they help make sure the mini isn't too top heavy.

Very impressed with them, and I just purchased a 60mm base done in the same style to put a Contemptor dread on as well. Fingers crossed it'll arrive soon.

More updates to come soon. Take it easy folks.

A special project you say? Hmm very interesting, I shall definitely be on the look out for that one.

Those DC and BA kits just have so much brilliant detail on them, you notice something new to look at every time.

Love the last finished one you did Red and this upcoming one looks superb but I have got a question for you - The grenades, will you be leaving them all just silver?

Captain, my Captain, Or: Building Captain Sendini; a Blood Angels 5th Battle Company Painting Blog. @ 2016/04/05 21:48:11

Post by: Red__Thirst

I agree Adamski. The Blood Angels range has some of the most amazing detail on their plastic kits. They're awesome, and really make for a unique looking force on the tabletop.

Now, at present I am planning on leaving the grenades silver for the time being. I don't have a good olive drab green shade I would like to paint them. That's the only other color I would paint them, and my green shades are very limited at present sadly.

Mentioning that does make me think and I'll put that shade down on my list of paints to look for next time I go to my local hobby store to pick up paint. I was there last week and had to get more dawnstone grey for basing, as I've pretty much killed off my last pot painting bases.

That is a color I could get and should have for both my Guard detail work and also my marines in the future.

We'll see how quickly I can get it. The nice thing is if I choose to go in and paint these grenades that green shade down the road it won't take very long to hit all of them with that color and then go in with a Nuln Oil wash afterward to darken the recesses and give them some shading.

In other news, I've finished off the bolt pistol arm of this DC marine and started the chainsword arm now. I'll finish it in short order and start work on the shoulder pads and jump pack to finish it off soon.

Take it easy for now.

If I wasn't so deep into my Ultras and such a big fan of their lore then I would definitely think about swapping sides and joining the Sons of Sanguinius. Not that that has stopped me from picking up some Sanguinary Guard for kitbashing or maybe getting some BA Tacs and DC for more bitz for the pile lol.

I think you could quite easily leave the grenades silver on the DC marines, it actually looks good and works for me. It's a nice little way of breaking up all the black armour.

Nothing says you couldn't do a little ally force of Blood Agels there Adamski.

Sanguinary High Priest leading some Sanguinary Guard with a small tactical squad in a drop pod coming to lend aid to their Ultramarine brethren. Same thing with a Chaplain leading a squad of Death Company instead of Sanguinary High Priest + Sanguinary Guard.

Could work very well I think.

Thoughts to ponder anyway. More updates forthcoming in the next couple of days. Take it easy for now,

Update after a good couple of hours of painting.

I'm always shocked at how quickly the time goes and how little I have to show for it on average, painting my Blood Angels to the degree and level of detail I am. I'm literally (on most of these, anyway) painting each piece of the miniature by itself completely and then assembling the model as I go starting with the base. Some of the minis are sub-assembled, being old models that I'm re-purposing to new ends, but the vast majority have been or are going to be complete paint and assemble as I go outside of gluing the front and back of the torsos together, etc.

It's amazingly satisfying seeing the completed, or in this post's case, nearly completed miniature taking shape. That said, in two hours I basically finished painting the arm and chainsword, attached it, then painted both left and right shoulder pads and attached each as I completed them. Granted, the bits are rather detailed and required some fine minutia detail painting, but still. I've got to work out a faster method.

Now, all that's left to finish off this model is to paint, then attach the jump pack, and I'll have the first five man squad of Death Company completed and can move on to the next project.

Here's the progress:

I like how this pose has come out as well, I hope with the jump pack attached it'll look like he's leaping skyward, just about to activate his jump pack's engines.

More updates forthcoming over the next couple of days I hope. Take it easy for now.

Ok.

I'm about cross eyed. But I'm finished with the right shoulder pad, depicting the company emblem.

For those not aware, the 5th Battle Company emblem of the Blood Angels chapter is a black blood drop on a red field, seen here:

Taking that image above which depicts the different kinds of Marines in a battle company (Tactical, Assault, Devastator, and Veteran), specifically from the 5th Battle Company, I have attempted to re-create the Sergeant's right shoulder pad. Namely, the black blood drop with a white border, outlining it so it can be seen on the Sergeant's shoulder pads, which are black on the interior with red trim.

On my Sergeant, I have obviously opted to go with the chapter symbol painted fully instead of being just yellow, as I prefer the chapter symbol to be colored properly since it's raised off of the shoulder pad.

After about an hour of toil with decals, paint, Micro-sol, the odd curse word, and about five failed attempts at getting the second decal to go into position properly without tearing, I am left with the following result:

I'm very pleased. It was exceedingly labor intensive but the labor has paid off. Now that the hard part is finished I can begin to work on the combi-flamer arm and back pack to finish off this mini in the near future I hope.

Thanks for reading and look forward to future updates soon I hope. Take it easy for now.

One more last minute update before sleep.

I went ahead and got the right arm mostly done, but still have to paint the combi-flamer up from the base coat. I've started the weapon around the hand to get the detail work on the hand itself finished up, but the weapon and back pack are all I lack to finishing this mini up.

Here's where it sits, with the arm and shoulder pad attached:

I'll pick it up tomorrow and start working on getting the metallic paint on the combi-flamer, then the black casing done and highlighted before painting the flamer nozzle and jewel drop icon to finish up the mini.

Very happy with the forward progress tonight. More updates pending, take it easy for now folks.

That Sergeant is coming along nicely.

Now go paint the other 50+ Marines and you'll have yourself the Tac Marine portion of a Battle Company!

Yea I have this tactical squad box to finish painting, plus the scout squad and then vehicles & transports a plenty, before tackling a second tactical squad box later. Lots to do still for sure.

I've touched up what I needed to on the Sergeant and have the back back base coated. I'll be starting work on the backpack when I get home this evening and should have the mini finished up in short order I do expect. I'll be continuing to work through tactical marines in short order, with the next mini being in a set of Mark VI power armor. Should be a lot of fun to paint up. Going to keep moving in banks of 5 minis, or one vehicle, so I don't stagnate on one kind of squad or unit.

More pictures coming soon. Take it easy for now.

I think it'll be worth it in the end though. You may paint slowly, but each guy is coming out as a masterpiece, which is something to be proud of. I don't have the patience for that (I have mountains upon mountains of stuff to paint still). Just keep plugging away!

Love the look of those two together. The heat distress on the barrels of the flamers looks brilliant. Did you add that company blood drop to the combi-flamer or was it already there and I just didn't notice it?

Thanks Adamski

It was part of the Combi-flamer already. Another excellent bit in the Blood Angels Tactical Squad box if I may say.

The bolter bit has the gem hanging from the end and the different combi parts slot into it. They're all cool, but the combi-flamer is probably my favorite. I just painted it up to match the company color, much like the gem on the sergeant's front-right hip.

Further updates to come soon. Take it easy and thanks for the reply Adamski.

My only desire in this box would be a power mace or power axe in a similar style to the power sword in the box (used on my Company Champion in this thread).

Beyond that it really does have a plethora of bits and cool parts to make a truly unique looking tactical squad.

I can't wait to get home from work and go hit up the paint desk for more forward progress on this squad. I'm really feeling the groove now on the painting. Hoping to make some solid progress soon.

Very happy with the squad logos on this squad so far on the right knee area of the power armor. Next squad will likely be the black kneepad with red blood drop emblem on it, though time will tell.

Thanks for that, STG.

I do some freehand, such as on the sergeant's right knee above. That said, though, I will freely admit I 'cheat' by way of putting a decal in place and then painting over it, using it as a guide and allowing me to get the freehand look with only a fraction of the talent . By the time I'm finished with the mini there is no, or very little, decal actually still showing as I've painted over it. That's what I did on the kneepad on this tactical marine that's in progress, as well as the Sergeant's shoulder pad above.

I hope to have a bit more progress on this tactical marine in short order. More updates to come. Thanks for looking STG and take it easy for now.

Captain, my Captain, Or: Building Captain Sendini; a Blood Angels 5th Battle Company Painting Blog. @ 2016/05/07 10:47:07

Post by: Red__Thirst

Most likely not. I'm going to leave them gold as they don't appear to be a gem set into a setting such as the gem on the helmet and front of the lower left leg.

If it looks like a gem in a setting, it gets the gem treatment, otherwise I'll paint it up as a solid block of color, likely gold more often than not. Obviously this won't go 100% of the time, but the vast majority will follow this logic I expect.

Thanks for looking and more updates are pending. I have the right arm and hand completely finished and am now working on the Bolter. Once it's finished up I'll get the right shoulder pad painted and begin work on the backpack to finish up the mini.

I'll power on to the next marine after that. More updates to come, stay tuned & take it easy.

Looking great so far! I've just noticed that you seem to forgo primer - do you paint your bases directly on plastic?

That guy with the clip is perhaps the best model you've done from the last 5 - lovely red and details. Also the bases are coming out really cool

Keep it going. Build your legion, kill the traitors

Thanks for the kudos there Teban I appreciate it!

I do use primer, but it's red primer (Army Painter brand spray primers, Dragon Red color). One solid coat of it on bare plastic covers like magic and then one to two thinned coats of Mephiston Red is all it takes to get a nice, even, vibrant red color on the models. It's worth its weight in gold for painting red.
Alternatively, I use plain black spray paint for the death company and black armored models such as Chaplains.

That said, here's the progress from tonight:

All I lack now is finishing up the back pack and I'll be on to the next marine. Plugging along slowly but surely.

I'm very happy with how this model turned out. More to come, take it easy for now.

Thanks for that EDC! I'm really trying to step up and really improve with each mini and squad, at least to the best of my meager abilities.

I woke up early and decided to finish off this tactical marine's backpack and button the mini up this morning. Check out the finished product.

Three tactical marines down, two more to go for the current squad goal before moving to the next bank of five, or solo project. I spent a good 45 minutes this morning scrubbing all the old paint off of my metal mephiston mini, I think after this squad is completed, I may go ahead and work on him, and my Lemartes mini as well.

More updates to come. Thanks for following along folks. Take it easy for now.

Some updated army shots of what's been finished so far.

The offering is meager, but each and every model is painted to the best of my abilities. I'm pretty proud of the small force I've amassed so far, and looking at what has yet to be finished, there's a lot more to go and to add to this army. I'm excited to keep pushing forward and working on things. Hopefully keep up the pace and get the tactical squad finished up so I can shift focus over to some scouts and then more tactical marines, perhaps mixing a dreadnought into the fray soon. We'll see.

That all being said, here's some individual unit shots with a group shot at the end. Not the best pictures or lighting, but hopefully they look decent.

First, the Death Company:

Next, Captain Aedus himself, along with my Librarian and Command Squad:

The three completed tactical marines of the first tactical squad, two more in progress and eventually another 5 marines to finish this squad off.

Lastly, the whole gang together:

Not much to look at, yet, but it's slowly getting there. Had a good outing this afternoon and managed a win versus some 30k Emperor's Children, though we had to call the game earlier than both liked sadly. Still, good times had and more games to come I do expect.

Thanks for looking and take it easy for now folks.

That is actually my plan I do believe there EDC Those two, plus possibly a Librarian Dreadnought as well, depending.

I've got to stay steady at it and try to get this tactical squad finished up ASAP so I can move on to the next project, whichever of the above I choose to start on next (Likely Lemartes, truth be told, I want to get him knocked out in short order).

More to come soon, I just finished up scraping the mold lines and laying out the bits for the next marine, as well as base coating the base with black spraypaint and getting everything ready to begin the painting. Check it out:

Looking forward to this one, he's going to be a lot of fun to paint up I think. Going for a defensive pose, may use a different right arm, but going to blue-tack him together later and see what works best.

You may want to consider getting your vow in for the ETL, as these's a cut off for new participants (I.e those making there first vow) but then you can make subsequent vows after completion.

You could could vow lemmy as Vow 1 and Meph with the Libby dread in subsequent vows.

That dude looks really good Red! your colours seem very crisp and well diluted.

The gems, they look realistic enough and the armour joints, I love how well done they've been painted. Did you paint that red drop on his knee or is that a decal?.

Also - Ive been wondering: Do you wash your entire model or just the recesses? It looks very clean

Thank you kindly Teban. To answer your questions, yes I painted the red drop on the knee, though it was a decal that I placed, then painted over carefully. Took two tries to get it to look correct but I'm pleased with the result.
Secondly, I just apply washes into the recesses and clean up any messiness red touch up where needed. I'm glad it looks clean, as that's what I'm shooting for

I'm working on getting him knocked out for Saturday, if all goes as I hope it will I'll be ready to start up Friday night/Saturday morning at midnight. Good luck!

Super happy with this squad so far. One more tactical marine to go and I'll be finished with the first half of this squad. Going to pause the red and take a quick detour to paint up a character model for a little competition between myself, and Teban. I'll be painting Lemartes, Guardian of the Lost up as quickly as I can to the standard you've all seen here. I hope to be able to knock him out over the course of this weekend, as the contest is set to start at midnight on Friday night/Saturday morning. This will also knock out my first vow for the ETL competition currently ongoing over on the Bolter & Chainsword forums.

Once Lemartes is complete, I'll work on knocking out the last member of this squad before moving on to the next unit to paint, which will likely be some Blood Angels Scouts.

Here's the 'army' (and I use the term army loosely as it's fairly small still) as it sits so far, with 1 more tactical marine now finished:

That's a Captain, a Librarian, a 5 man Blood Angels Command Squad, 5 Death Company, and now four Tactical Marines, so 16 models. I'm 6 models away from being able to field a minimal troops Battleforged list.

Here's where the tactical squad sits at present:

Work will begin on the fifth member of the squad, another Bolter toting marine, in short order. I'm about to try and quickly paint up the base, as I got it basecoated last night and ready for paint.

teban wrote:Lovely model mate!

Thanks for that Teban! I don't currently have a brighter red than Mephiston Red (The next step up would be Wazdakka Red I think), and I don't want to use orange as I've tried that before and it just, at least to my eyes, makes the model just look orange instead of red. It's how my eyes see red I guess, I don't know. I hope to be able to get my hands on some brighter red and do some limited edge highlighting in the future to the helmets and other top portions of the armor, but we'll see.

Once I get our contest finished up, and get this last tactical marine finished as well, I'm going to move on to a 5 man Scout Squad before possibly churning out a Librarian Dreadnought. We'll see. I've got a bunch of drop pods I need to start on as well, so I may detour into some armor before coming back to the infantry.

More updates to come. Thanks so much for the replies and good luck to you in our coming contest there Teban. Take it easy for now folks.

Hey Adamski, yes I'm going to stick with the same color palette as the Death Company so he matches. My reasoning for this is he cannot join any other squad beyond Death Company, being fallen to the Black Rage himself. However, he is maintaining his sanity through sheer force of will alone. I'm going to be incorporating some brighter silver to help parts of him stand out, such as the chalice on the front of his jump pack harness, and crozius arcanum. I'm presently getting started on the left arm and crozius now.

Progress update!

The left arm is finished and attached. Going to get some preliminary work in on the right arm before I have to head to work tonight.

Updated pictures:

After the right arm is finished, I'll work on knocking out the jump pack to finish off the mini. Been a lot of fun to paint him up, but as usual black is a pain to paint, on top of being dripping with details that I'm trying my best to not overlook or miss.

The lion's share of the work is finished now. Moving on to the arm before I start the last leg with the jump pack.

Sweet looking mini there Teban! Congrats on the win! Curse my having to adult and go to this silly thing called work! Two 12 hour long night shift did not assist in my being able to get more painting finished.

That said, I've all bit finished the right arm this afternoon before coming back in to work. I have the shoulder pad wrapped up and the arm mostly done except for the purity seals, and also have the bolt pistol left to paint. Once that's finished I'll just have to paint up and attach the jump pack.

I totally would have finished the mini off completely yesterday had work not intruded. C'est la vie!

I love your Captain also Teban, awesome base and choice of parts and the paint work is superb as well. I would have loved to have seen him with a Mk IV jump pack in lieu of the standard power pack, but I do like that particular back pack a whole lot of course. Your red is very crisp and vibrant and your gold color is very good as well. Top class mini just like all of your Imperial Fists!

If you paint up more Blood Angels stuff be sure to share it please, and congrats once again!

I'll have more updates in short order here. Take it easy for now.

Thank you for your critique as well, I strive for my best results with projects like this one and I'll make sure to include you when I work on more Blood Angels! (I plan on working a very small force, something that could be an ally for my Fists - they held the gates together!)

Keep it up and finish your mini, I cant wait to see it finished!

It should be a lot of fun for sure! Current plan is to finish off Lemartes (Completing my first Vow for the ETL on B&C Forums) as quickly as possible, then start working on a few more Tactical Marines. May go ahead and power through the rest of my Tactical Squad box, mixing in the odd Death Company marine, or character such as Mepiston, or vehicle/Dreadnough as I can to keep from getting tired of the same thing over and over.

I'm considering trying to build a Sanguinary High Priest, however I don't know if I want to make a jump pack priest or depart from that a bit and do a biker priest instead.

Long term plan at this point. I've got enough of a back log to worry with at present.

More updates to come soon. I'm off work the next 3 days, so I hope to get some good work in if possible.

Take it easy for now guys.

I'm down for a dreadnought competition! Let's set up a day in a couple of weeks to get that started, as I need to finish Lemartes off and ideally get started on this 5th tactical marine. I'll do my Librarian Dreadnought up and you can work on one of your dreads there. Sound like a plan?

Adamski Alders wrote:Well the simple answer is obviously - do both Red, a bike and jump high priest, simples

See, I thought about doing that, but I don't like having multiples of the same character in my army. I'm not above it of course. I am also, despite the fact that they're inferior, predisposed to enjoying jump packs more for their aesthetic. Still it is something to consider in the future. I do plan on having a bike squad in my army at some point as well, so having a biker Priest to give them feel no pain would not suck at all.

We'll see what we can see. I've got a plethora of other things to paint up first in the mean time.

Updates on Lemartes will be forthcoming in the near future, I'm going to knock this right arm out and get it attached in short order now that I'm awake.

Take it easy for now folks.

And the right arm is finished up and attached!

The white Blood Angels emblem on the inside of the bolt pistol was a stone cold b!tch to get painted correctly! However, I think at this point I'm going to be happy with it and move on to the Jump Pack.

Take a look:

Jump pack shouldn't take too long I expect. I'm using a plastic one from the Death Company box as using the metal one for him would make him top heavy to the extreme, more-so than he even is already, and prone to tipping over. It's suitably detailed and ought to look good I expect.

More to come soon. Final update on this mini in short order. Stay tuned & take it easy.

I did hit it with a highlight earlier but didn't like it. I want his wargear to look old, and the mask to be aged bone. Also I want to make sure it's differentiated from the parchment paper a bit by making it look more 'red-brown' shaded versus just sepia shaded like the parchment is.

I went a little lighter on the shading on the right shoulder pad as it's a much larger area and I wanted it to stand out a bit more, but still have the same shading effects as the helmet.

Work is now starting on the jump pack. If I can make good headway I'll attach it tonight, otherwise I'll finish it up tomorrow and move on to the fifth tactical marine waiting in the wings to finish that squad off. After that, I have a hankering for a Librarian Dreadnought in the near future.

More to come soon. Thanks for the reply and I'll be sure to post up finished pictures of Lemartes over on B&C forums to show my finished Vow.

Take it easy.

Hey Red,

That looks fantastic now that it's finally been put together! The bolt Pistol looks great - it paid off in the end

There are some 'clear' paints from FW that might interest you for the Gems mate, They're called 'Pyroclast orange' and 'Angron Red'. I used the Pyroclast Orange on my gems and I think they look fantastic mate. You also avoid the 'ardcoat coat

All in all, Lemartes came out great and he will surely lead your DeathCo.

Oooo.. Salamanders are fun. My second favorite chapter after Blood Angels to be honest. I'd LOVE to see your take on a Salamanders scheme!

I've never used the FW paints, and am tempted to pick up the new GW gem paints to try out and see how they look in a limited fashion, just have never used them obviously and don't want to screw up a finished paint job. Still, I'm all for trying new stuff.

It's your world, I'm just living in it. I think some Sallies done up in your style would look amazing. I've got the Furioso sprues out of the box and am going to prep them for painting later. In the mean time I'm starting work on the 5th Tactical Marine's base for purpose. Get it knocked out tonight so I can start work on the actual model itself later next week. I'm kinda stymied at the moment, as it has started raining outside (MUCH to my chagrin! ) and I can't do any base-coating with the moisture in the air. It's just asking for trouble.

Here's the dreadnought sprue for your viewing pleasure also.

So many cool bits. I can't wait to get started on it soon.

Totally understand that man. I wouldn't have 'charged' ya much for one model, just enough for shipping back to ya once the mini was completed. Though I don't relish the thought of painting more black armor I will confess.

Going to get this mini's base knocked out quickly before moving on to final prep work of the model itself (Mold line scraping! Yay! )

Quick minor update for the weekend.

Got the Tactical Marine's base finished last night, and also got all cleanup and prep work done on the component parts (Scraped the lines, drilled out the bolter barrel, etc) before base coating the legs red this morning before bedding down for a few hours. /the rain was short lived thankfully & the humidity dropped off quickly afterward.

That said, here's the finished base:

White/unpainted spots are where the marine's feet will connect/glue to the base as usual.

Looking forward to getting this mini knocked out quickly and starting on the Librarian Dreadnought. Going to try and make it a centerpiece model if I can.

Work has started on the fifth tactical marine in earnest. I've gotten the legs to ~40% completed tonight. I've got to finish the right knee pad squad emblem once I get the decal to lay flat (yay Micro Sol), then the red touch up, paint the rope on the right leg, the pouches on the left hip, as well as the left kneepad gem and gold setting. Once that's all done I'll get the purity seals last and move on to the torso.

Quick WIP picture while I let the Micro Sol finish drying:

This marine will be in a more traditional bolter up/forward pose, held by both hands. Most of the rest of this squad will likely be similar to this pose. The next model I make, the first of the second bank of 5 models to bring the squad to full strength, will have the squad's special weapon; a flamer.

I'm going to try and paint up my Librarian Dreadnought next after this, and possibly a drop pod as well. We'll see what we see once I get to that point though.

I like the new bases a lot, and may get a set to try out and mix in with the existing bases I'm using for added variety. I'm going with an urban rubble theme with my army (I think the neutral grey looks good with the bright red) and using the same palette on the new bases should help tie them all together. We'll see. I'd like to see them in person before I make a final decision on it.

Yea I'm looking forward to painting a vehicle (walker, in this instance) and hope to really make it look nice and tie in to the rest of my army nicely. Speaking of progress, I've finished up the legs and have just glued them to the finished base for the first sub-assembly. Check it out.

The right knee was MUCH easier than the last one I had to do (thank God!) and the rest of the bit was rather simple overall, just required a bit more clean up work to get finished than normal (I attribute that to painting while sleepy last night and tonight. More mistakes = more fixes that needed to be made).

I'm about to spraypaint the torso and head in short order and maybe do a little preliminary work on them before I sleep. Thanks for looking and more updates are coming soon. Till then, take it easy.

I know or at least assume you're being sarcastic with the "now with added skulls" but that is exactly what I'm expecting to pop up somewhere on the box/packaging

Red - what did you do to that yellow ammo pouch on the thigh/leg? Also is that one of those snazzy Resin bases that you've used on the rest of the guys?

A Dread-off is something I wouldn't mind seeing, might inspire me to build and paint my new Ven Dread that I got in the Start Collecting Space Marines box.

Red - what did you do to that yellow ammo pouch on the thigh/leg? Also is that one of those snazzy Resin bases that you've used on the rest of the guys?

Damn, those 25mm and 40mm are drowning in tonnes of skulls, I only really paid attention to the 32mm but thought there was too much building rubble on the bases to bother buying for my "currently being ugraded/updated" Ultras 5th Company. I take it back and apologise lol

It gets worse when you realize that they included those extra skulls with the bases on purpose. GW sales design is to slap as many skulls on it as humanly possible

Yes, the base is one of the resin ones I've gotten from Rusty Nickel miniatures (Fantastic bases, as I've said.) Their 10 pack of 32mm bases is excellent. I intend to buy more and base my whole army with them.

As for the pouches, I used a coat of undiluted old GW Flesh Wash ink over the base coat of Zamesi Desert yellow. Once that was dry I went over it with a Seraphim Sepia wash to help dull it back down. Produces a good leather finish. I learned this trick painting my Vostroyans. Very quick & efficient.

The Dread-bowl 2016 should be a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to it. I would love to see your Venerable Dreadnought looks like once you paint it up. I very much like the new Ven Dread kit.

As for the new GW bases, I may yet get some of the 32mm, as more urban rubble bases are always helpful for variety if nothing else.

Hope to have more updates coming this weekend. Take it easy.

Torso and head are next on the paint desk. hope to make solid progress over the weekend if I can, fingers crossed.

After the torso and helmet are finished I'll move on to the arms & shoulder pads, then the backpack last. If I can get some extra time this weekend I may be able to finish this mini off. We'll see what kind of progress I can make.

Looking good - a nice, vibrant lad. Good job making the details pop. Can't really tell from the photo, but what colour are his pouches? They look almost metallic to me which seems a bit off.

Thank ya kindly Lips!

The pouches are Zamesi Desert with a coat of the old GW flesh wash and then another coat of Seraphim Sepia on top of that to dull them back down. It's the angle of the light relative to the mini making it look metalic. They're a nice matte brown shade in person.

There's a better look at them with proper lighting.

Thanks again for the comment and feedback! Looking forward to getting this guy wrapped up in short order.

Not a worry sir! The lighting did make it look very metallic after all. I appreciate the critique, especially coming from someone I've followed along and tried to emulate here. As I've said in the past, I'm drawing a LOT of inspiration from your Ultramarine blog and the attention to detail, both in the modeling/kitbashing aspect and painting element of my army as well here. My goal is to have as close to a 'master class' army as I can, visually speaking. If I can make my force look as cool as your Ultras do, then I'll be beyond pleased!

All that said, I've made some progress over the weekend here. I managed to finish up the chest and helmet last night, and have just finished the arms and bolter as well. Take a look:

First, the chest immediately after sub assembly with the legs/base (I forgot to post this picture in my last update, throwing it in here now):

And the finished arms and bolter both attached and in place:

Very happy with the pose, though it is somewhat 'generic' by comparison, I'm pleased with the execution of it. I'll be making 4 more bolter marines and 1 flamer marine in the future for this squad to flesh it to 10 man strong and will try to keep them as close to the same quality as this guy (and the other squad members) as possible.

Next up is the shoulder pads and back pack to finish the mini off. More updates to come. take it easy for now folks.

I'm happy to report that I have another tactical marine finished up. Very pleased overall, he came out better than I expected he would.

Feedback appreciated as always. Also, I've tried a different method for taking pictures, hopefully it looks ok and doesn't bring all the flaws too far to the surface. Take a look:

Few minor touch ups have been made immediately after the pictures were taken (left knee, etc)

Hopefully folks like it. I'll be trying to use this method for pictures in the future, as it produces much crisper pictures it seems. Yay learning new things with cameras by accident.

Using what steam I had left tonight, I broke out the clippers, hobby knife, bits box, and plastic glue to prepare the next project.

Behold!!

My Librarian Dreadnought, which should see a lot of action in the coming weeks once I get it finished up, especially with the boost in attacks from the recent FAQ addressing the lower attacks on all BA/SW/GK dreadnoughts. Mine will have the heavy flamer on the arm, and an alternative right arm with the meltagun as well, as I have an old school metal furioso model I'll be using as either a standard furioso or possibly a death company dread. Not sure yet.

Will be painting this thing in pieces, starting with the base as usual, then moving on to the legs and working my way up the torso.

Now to get in touch with Teban to set up Dread Bowl 2016.

Take it easy.

I'm excited to get started on this dreadnought for sure. I'm about to begin the process of using masking tape to cover up some areas for black base coat (the metallic areas) and then others for the red base coat. The torso is going to be the main portion where I have to do any masking, as other areas/parts I can simply base coat black (Legs) or red (font of the sarcophagus, leg armor, arms) and then go in afterward with detail work. Hoping to have all base coats down by this weekend so I can get started with Teban on our competition when he's ready.

Update sans pictures.

I've gotten all the extra armor plating (leg & fore-arm armor) separated and cleaned up, as well as drilled out the heavy flamer barrel and other final modeling preparations made for base coating. I've also gotten the base washed up with soap & water, and base coated black along with the leg sub assembly spray painted at the same time.

I'm going to get the red parts sprayed next before getting started on the masking for the main torso assembly sections that will get both black and red spray paint (red on top, where the armor is black everywhere else).

Should be fun. I'm looking forward to getting this started in earnest and hopefully getting solid forward progress on preparations over the weekend.

Well I have an alternate idea for Dread Bowl, since life is kicking you in the pants. The goal is to see who can finish first, or fastest, so I propose that I start at Midnight one night and keep a running tab of hours/days it takes me to finish the model. I'll post that up once the dreadnought is finished and when you can get ready, declare what day your time starts (at midnight once again) and see if you can paint your dread up faster than I painted mine. Let me know if this sounds agreeable.

JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:Dude, Libby Dreads are awesome! Can't wait to see him painted!

I'm really looking forward to seeing how it works on the field too. I've got a FW drop pod as well for him to ride in. Going to work on that as my next vehicle once I finish the dread off and make more progress on the infantry.

So, weekend kinda fell apart on me and I got zero work done sadly. Back at work tonight and tomorrow night as well, so odds are slim I'll be able to do much beyond hopefully getting some spray painting done between shifts.

That said, I did happen upon something kind of fun. I found my old metal Furioso Dreadnought that I stripped years ago and will be re purposing this model into a Death Company Dreadnought. Specifically, Cassor the Damned from the Shield of Baal: Deathstorm game supplement. The classic metal Furioso has the Melta Gun and Storm Bolter underslung arms, and I have the Magna Grapple and Blood Talons left over, still on sprue from my Librarian Dreadnought build. This perfectly allows me to match Cassor's weapons and equipment load out and not really have many unused bits from the Librarian/Death Company/Furioso kit.

This old model was usually fielded as Moriar the Chosen back in 3rd edition, and the thought of a Character Dreadnought I can field as a troops choice is pretty awesome as well. Should be a cool project to help keep me busy with preparing until Teban is ready to start Dread Bowl 2016.

I've got to try and find a suitable base, get the last little bit of ancient stuck on paint picked off the model, attach the magna grapple to the torso and blood talons to the arms, and I'll be ready to start work I hope.

More updates to come later. Take it easy for now.

I'm down with that if you are . So Friday, the 8th of July as it rolls over into Saturday, the 9th of July at midnight?

I'm good to go if you are. Just got done laying down spray paint base coats on the component parts of the Dreadnought. Looking forward to getting started on it in short order I hope.

Take it easy, and best of luck!

Oh yes! Derp! I misunderstood.

This friday I'm starting my long (3x 12 hour shifts back to back) weekend of work. I'll certainly start it then with you but I won't actually have time to work on the model till the 4th here, my first day off of work after the weekend.

You'll be at a bit of an advantage which I don't mind I'll add. It'll add to the challenge.

More to come soon. Good luck and lets kick it off on the 2nd at midnight.

Take it easy.

Sounds good. I got all the component parts spray painted with base coats today while the weather was conducive for it. I'm happy to report that I'm ready to begin. I'll make a little head way when I get home from shift in the morning and try not to lag too far behind over the weekend

In other news, I got the first of my Scouts started last night. The squad Sergeant, which will be fairly bare bones with the exception of an added Meltabomb for heavy vehicle/big target cracking. Now that the BA scouts are back to being on par with the standard SM scouts (Yay Errata!), they're certainly a worthy addition to the troops section of my army. I'm looking forward to knocking them out in short order after finishing up my Librarian Dreadnought. I've come up with a fun way to convert camo cloaks onto them while making them suitably CQC/choppy still. Look forward to that update soon.

After that, I'll be more tactical squad members I hope, starting with the squad's special weapon marine, carrying a Flamer.

Good luck in the mean time Teban. Once we both finish our Dreadnoughts let's have them do battle here on Dakka. The winner of the painting competition will get the chance to move/shoot/charge first.

We each get to move, then use psychic powers (if any), then shoot, then charge. We can have a third party roll the dice and see who the final winner of the battle is.

Take it easy Teban. Looking forward to seeing updates.

Busy weekend is busy. I managed to make headway on the base, and am happy to report is's hovering at about 70% completed. Just a little more ink work, some highlighting, final detail, and finishing clean up are all that's left on it. After that ,I'll get the legs worked on and attached to the base once finished.

Hopefully I'll have pictures to share tomorrow afternoon or evening if all goes as I hope it will. Fingers crossed.

In closing, my Librarian Dreadnought is going to rip your Contemptor to pieces! For the Emperor, and for Sanguinius!

I'm way, way, WAY behind Teban at this point, but I'm still getting progress all the same.

Just completed the base, and had a lot of fun with it I'll add. Take a look:

Now begins the actual miniature itself. I'll be starting with the legs, then main torso, back/power plant section, front armored section, then each arm to ultimately complete the mini.

Quick picture-less update.

It seems this week that it it can go wrong, it will go wrong.

I've made zero progress since the evening of the 4th and likely won't have time to paint at all till next week. I've got an impromptu trip to Tennessee starting Friday and won't be home till at least Sunday night. Nothing bad, thank goodness, but still something that'll keep me from my paint desk for several days after working two shifts tonight and tomorrow (Wednesday & Thursday) night.

Hopefully I'll make some progress before the weekend, but will wait and see. Next week I'll be on vacation so I should have a good deal of downtime to paint, I hope. We'll see.

Take it easy for now guys. More updates to come as soon as I can make forward progress.

I'm sorry to hear that mate. I've made some progress and since I have a trip next tuesday I've got no option but to continue if I want to play a second dreadnaught in Vegas :S

Side by side comparison between the 2 dreads I've painted up so far.

For the new dreadnaught: What do you think, Chainfist with built-in melta or graviton cannon? and for the other arm... would you say claw with plasma or heavy flamer?

The old dread, I want to give him an assault cannon and a fist with a grarviton cannon or a heavy flamer... options... options.

thoughts?

They look amazing, your yellow technique is second to none man, so crisp and cleam on the brush and shading work.

I'd personally go with a Chainfist with built in Graviton weapon, and pair it with a claw with a Heavy Flamer.

That gives you some ability to clear out cover and have some guaranteed overwatch hits should something charge you, while also being able to put hurt on 2+ saves with the Grav.

If you want more AP:2, then go with plasma instead. I have a fondness for flame weapons so I tend to prefer them myself. Go with what you like though.

Take it easy, and great work on the dread so far.

I may have made a mistake there - I meant to say grarviton gun. Its an AP4 18" range weapon. 3" blast, haywire. instead of using Armour values, it uses Strength values.

Cheers mate!

On another note, i have 2 dreadnaught fists that will be used with heavy flamers. im not too fond of combi-bolters .

These dudes are meant to go infantry or vehicle hunting. the third one... the third one is still having its paintjob reworked .

I'll let you know my final decision tomorrow!

Right??

I got a little work in on Monday, finshing off the base.
Tuesday I had an 8 hour training day from 8 am till 5 pm, then had to run home and diagnose an issue with my wife's car (figured out it was an old battery, easy fix but time consuming.)
Wednesday I was able to get the battery dealt with and replaced before coming in to work a 12 hour shift tonight.
Thursday is sleep so I can get up and work another 12 hour shift into Friday morning
Friday I get home from work, change & run my wife's car over to get serviced for the trip, get home and pack a small bag, then nap till my wife gets home and we head to Tennessee through Sunday, then drive home late Sunday night.

Monday, recover.... I hope.

Yay crazy fun times!

I'll see if I can get *something* done before then.

Take it easy for now.

Update to show progress. I've already lost the build/paint phase of Dread Bowl 2016 sadly, but I remain undaunted! I will finish off my Dreadnought here and take victory when our dreadnoughts do battle here on Dakka for all to see!

Here's where I've gotten so far:

I will begin work on the torso next, starting with the Librarian's helmet/face, then front torso assembly (the most detailed sections) before moving on to the main body section. After that, I'll paint the back/power plant, and then each arm to finish off the model.

More updates to come soon. Take it easy for now.

Slow and steady.

I've made modest progress tonight, starting with the Dreadnought's 'face'. Take a look:

Once that was finished I started on what I feel is the most detailed portion of the miniature, the front torso.

I started by getting the red laid down over the red base coat and then getting the blue center of the torso/sarcophagus started, and the base yellow coat for the gold center portion of the torso. Once that was finished, I hit it with the blue wash and then started working on the right (camera - left) side of the torso. I'm fairly pleased with the result. The book and hanging parchment came out fairly nicely I think. May go back and hit the right leg parchment with the same effect I used on the torso here. Not sure yet.

Here's the WIP front torso:

Next step will be to paint the left (camera - right) side of the torso with the chapter symbol and hanging scrolls. Preliminary ink work has been laid down and I've started working on the base layer for the gold bits as well obviously.

The final steps for this bit will be getting the center portion of the torso highlighted, mount the 'helm' into the torso, and then paint the center chest decoration. After that I'll move on to the main torso assembly, which will be mostly painting metallic and a couple of gems, before mounting the front to it, then moving on to the rear torso/power plant portion. After that it'll be paint the arms, we'll have a nice shiny new Librarian Furioso to field.

More updates to come. Thanks for looking and take it easy.

Ok, further progress made. I completed the left (camera - right) side of the torso, and have the preliminary work on the center portion of the torso started. Finishing the front plate in short order, then highlighting the blue section before mounting the 'helm' into the front torso. I'll then be ready to move on to the main torso assembly, then power plant/back torso. After that, it'll be down to arms, and a finished dread!

Here's the progress pictures:

Very happy with the progress. Taking this slow and steady, as this will be one of the center piece models in my army. I want it to look as good as I can make it look.

Further updates to come. Take it easy for now.

Minor update.

I don't remember where I heard it, but a long time ago I heard the saying "God is in the details."

It kinda resonated with me, and has driven me to make sure I am detail oriented, both in my work, and in how I approach learning things.

I say that to explain tonight's painting venture. I didn't accomplish much, comparatively, but I did get the back piece started, and some very fine detail work painted to a satisfactory standard.

Take a look:

That adeptus mechanicus symbol was... interesting. Lots of trial and error, thinning paint, highlighting, ink washes, and at least an hour of work on just that one bit.

Once it was *finally* finished to a satisfactory level, I finished painting the red cowlings over the 'engine exhaust' of the back of the dread, and then got the purity seal finished.

All that's left (which is the majority of the piece) will be the metallic paint on the central/interior part of the back, followed by ink work, and then 'dirtying' up the exhaust vents. It should go fairly quickly once I get started on it.

Thanks for looking, and the next update will have the back piece finished and glued into place.

Take it easy for now.

Thank you all for the kind words. I'm about to start doing the next steps on the back/dreadnought power plant. Today was kind of a wash (in a good way, thankfully) but I didn't get much painting done at all. I'll get the metallic paint laid down on the back now and hopefully the ink work before I go ahead and attach it and then do the final weathering on the tops of the exhaust stacks.

I'll post an update in here shortly once progress has been made. Take it easy for now.

Alrighty! Here's the promised pictures. With this, the body of the dreadnought is officially finished up. All that's left to do is paint the arms up and we're good to go!

First, the front once again:

Now, a few angles of the completed and attached back:

More progress updates to come as I make them. Going to likely paint up the power fist arm first as it has two additional bits of sub assembly to work on versus the furioso force halberd, which I'm not exactly sure how I want to paint yet. We'll see what we can see.

For now, take it easy and thanks for following along everyone.

Update time.

I've gotten the right arm started. Red layer is down on the red parts, and I've started some preliminary metallic work before ink/wash work begins. I also paused to add a decal that I'm about to finalize now by adding a little paint to 'mask' the edges of it.

Take a look.

In addition, I also started the arm armor plates that will mount to the top/front of the dreadnought's forearms.

Ink work has started on both as well in preparation for the detailing. The chapter symbol (left most) one will attach to the right arm, while the librarian emblem arm shield will attach to the left arm with the Furioso Force Halberd. They're both small parts so painting them together makes sense. I'll also be painting the Heavy Flamer and attaching it once I get to that point with metallic work on the right arm.

Lastly, here's a quick picture with both arms 'in place' for fun.

I'm looking forward to getting this model finished up and moving on to the next item in the queue. Not sure quite yet what that's going to be, but I'm leaning toward getting my scouts finished, or possibly doing another vehicle (Dreadnought Drop Pod, anyone?)

I appreciate everyone following along, and I'll try and have another update with the finished right arm as soon as I can. Till then, take it easy.

Thank you for the kind words as always Teban! Your dreadnoughts came out splendidly if I may say! Can't wait to see what's next!

Regarding damage/weathering, I'm considering doing some slight weathering, but I've not done any kind of weathering on the infantry, so I don't know if I'll do some chipping or leave him 'pristine'. Still kinda back and forth on it at this point. Will make a decision once I get the model finished and assembled.

As for what's next, likely some scouts, or more tactical marines. My other option will possibly be a drop pod for the Librarian Dread to carry on with the steam of painting a vehicle. We'll see.

JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:The dread's looking awesome! The red of BA and the blue of Librarian armor contrast really well! really excited for that force weapon!

Thanks Justarein! I really like the blue and red contrast a lot. I want to paint more of it I'll confess! Maybe another Librarian, though I do have Mephiston left to paint as well at some point. We'll see what I can work on soon. I'm saving the Force Weapon for last, hoping to make it look cool, and suitably intimidating. Fingers crossed!

That all being said...

Progress! I've gotten the metallic work mostly finished, and preliminary ink work all but done as well on the right arm. At this time, I only lack some small touch up on the red, and then detail work such as on the fore-arm and such. Once those steps are finished, I'll paint up the armored plate to mount to the top of the arm, and then the heavy flamer and get both attached. After that, it'll be down to the left arm to finish off the mini.

Here's the continued WIP of the arm. Hope to have this finished up soon, fingers crossed.

Finally! An update!

I had a run of terrible luck lately and as such have been woefully unable to find painting time till the last couple of days. Thankfully, I FINALLY have the right arm finished and have begun work in earnest on the left arm as well.

Here's where we sit at present:

Very pleased with the model to this point. I've got 7 days to finish off the left arm to complete the challenge I'm competing in on another board (B&C for any interested) and barring another world crushing instance, I should be able to get it wrapped up in short order I hope. I've already gotten the left arm started, and have made some solid headway on the shoulder and arm itself, with the final part to be worked on being the Furioso Force Halberd itself.

More updates pending. Take it easy for now folks.

I've gotten basic headway on the red and started the metallic parts of the arm started. Next comes finishing up the metallic parts, doing the parchment, and other fine detals (gems) and finally finishing the actual halberd.

Not a ton to do, but not a lot of time left to finish it up. Fingers crossed I'll get it finished before the end of the week.

Once that is finished, I'll begin work on finishing up the halberd itself, glue the armor plate to the top of the fore arm, and I'll have the model wrapped up. If I can get some good headway tonight, I should be able to finish it up tonight or, at the latest, tomorrow. Fingers Crossed.

I'm just finished up with the model now. Halberd is drying at present.

Next project will likely be a 5 man scout squad to give me a second troops choice.

Pictures will be posted once the drying is completed.

As for how I'm doing the Halberd, I'm putting a good layer of pure white into the recesses of the blade, then painting the blade with a very bright silver (The old Mithril Silver paint). Once that dries, I'm going to apply pure blue wash into the recesses to 'tint' the white a nice deep blue shade. Once that's finished, I'm going to be taking a very thinned down blue wash to the blade itself and allowing it to pool at the tip/front of the blade, allow that to dry completely, then do the same thing at the mid point, and possibly at the rear as well depending, before hitting the entire blade with a clear gloss coat to keep everything in place (I prefer the way gloss looks on blades for clear coating.)

I'll have pictures within the next few hours. Stay tuned.

Take it easy.

Looking like it's coming together nicely. Love the detail and paintjob on that front plate though, especially the company colour jewels linking it with the rest of your army.

Red! I am also here to present a challenge!

What do you say?

I would love to agree to this, but sadly I am still lacking the heads I need to make my scouts look the way I want to (I need to get my hands on five of the helmeted Tempestus Scions heads to achieve the desired look for my Angels.) Once I have them in hand (which will be soon, I hope) I'll let ya know and we can try and throw down! As for the dread-off, I'm ready when you are! We just need a neutral third party to roll the dice and see which one of us comes out on top. Any Volunteers??

Thanks for the continued support Adamski I wanted to incorporate the onyx gems in somewhere, so front and center made the most sense. I'm glad you like it!

I'm pleased to announce it's pretty much finished as of a little earlier. Finally getting around to posting pictures of it now. They're kinda poor shots, and more/better pictures will be taken in short order I hope, once I can borrow my friend's recently completed lightbox.

That all being said, without further ado, here's the (finally!) finished Librarian Dreadnought.

Thanks so much for looking, and I hope you guys like the finished product. I'll likely be making a few touch ups here or there, but the model itself is by and large finished up. Very pleased with the final result.

More updates to come. Take it easy for now guys, and I'll see y'all soon.

Excellent work on the Libby Dread. Thanks for all your contributions to the ETL this year, have you enjoyed the experience?

Quick follow up update for those here following along. I'll be starting work on another batch of Tactical Marines, or possibly a vehicle (Drop pod), depending on which tickles my fancy once I sit down at my paint desk. Pictures to come in my next progress update.

That being said, can I get a volunteer to roll some dice for me in the near future please? I (and Teban) need someone to help us out and see who the final champion of Dread Bowl, 2016 will be and I'd love it to be a neutral party so the dice rolls can be documented and results posted up here.

I'll get Teban to comment on his Dread's stats, but the following rules will be in play:

One "Turn" will be in place, with the dreads starting 8" apart (Center of base to Center of base, so they'll be around 7ish inches from each other).

Each Dread will be given the chance to cast psychic powers (If able) up to their mastery level (ML:2), with one roll made for psychic charge dice/deny the witch dice for both models. Then, each dread will be given the opportunity to shoot with Teban's dread shooting first (He won the painting competition, so he gets to shoot and try to charge first).

Once that occurs, Teban's dread will attempt to charge and my dread will overwatch (My dread only has a Heavy Flamer for ranged weapons, so likely won't be doing anything but scorching paint) .

If Teban fails the charge, my Dread will attempt to charge and Teban's Dread will get overwatch. If my dread fails the charge also, then Teban will again attempt to charge, this will alternate till one of us makes it into melee with the other, the successful charging dread benefiting from +1 attack charge bonus.

For my Dread, he has the following:
Front AV: 13, Side AV:12, Walker (Character) with WS:5 and BS:4. He's I:4 base, and has 4 Attacks base, with + 1 Attack for second Close Combat Weapon while using the Furioso Force Halberd (S:10, AP:2 weapon). The model's only ranged weapon is the Heavy Flamer.

Psychic Powers (Mastery Level: 2) - Roll once on the Sanguinary chart and default to the Primaris power, which is Quickening: Warp Charge 1 Blessing - Target (Psyker or friendly character within 12") gains the Fleet USR and +D3 Initiative & Attacks (Roll once for both characteristics)
The second power will be a random roll (or draw if cards are available) on the Fulmination discipline.

The Librarian will attempt to manifest both powers, using two dice for Quickening, and one dice for the Fulmination power if the minimum of 1 is rolled for the pool of psychic power dice (Giving 3 power dice total) - the exception to this being if the Fulmination power is a Warp Charge 2 power (And isn't a movement based power. If it is a movement based power then default to the primaris power on Fulmination as well).

As I said, I'll let Teban lay out his dread's pertinent stats and weapons so out third party volunteer knows what he has.

Take it easy for now.

Hey Red!

Let me know which you will do first (Drop pod or Tacticals) - I'd love to build my own at the same time!

Damn! those look like good stats

Mine:

Front AV 13, Side AV 12.
WS5, BS5, I4, 3 Attacks Base (+1 for second CCW) using Chainfist. He has a Graviton gun (built in) and a Plasma Blaster (built in).

Atomantic Shield confers him a 5++ to shooting attacks and 6++ in Close Combat.

It also happens to have fleet

Lets fight!

Cheers!

Hoping some kind soul will volunteer to drop some dice for us soon. Any takers??

Teban: I'm likely going to be working on a drop pod next. I have to do some prep work on it first, however (Resin Dreadnought Drop Pod)

Gotta cut all the excess resin off of it and get the uprights straightened out.

Once that's finished, I'll let ya know.

Take it easy for now.
