I'm not sure if I'm going to finish my entry this weekend in time, I will try but I don't think I have enough hours in the day when I get to the pigments stage for them to dry in time.
Am sooooo far behind at the mo. However as of yesterday, I am now 'legally' married!!! 4 day weekend coming up though so gonna have to paint like the devil hiself is chasing my brushes lol

And the Tower of London nearby!. Stonehenge and Westminster Abbey are not far away. It's Nottingham too, so you can always say you want to uh... verify the historical accuracy of Robin Hood! Pointed boots north and gone to Scotland. Pfffft!
Glad you had a good time in Italy
Incidentally, showed Mrs. Talys the post, she says we'll compromise... we're allowed to go to WHW next time we're in Europe as long as I take her shopping in Italy too, lol
I have Finished!! My entry - "The Furthest Group Of Thallax"
I'm not one for dedicating stuff to a person, but on the evening of the 11th i was told that my grandma had been taken ill and had been transferred from the care home she moved into 3-4 months ago to stirling hospital' 'acute care' ward and had been found to have 'pancreatic problems' which aren't fix-able.
Me and my dad (it's his mum) cancelled all plans and made preperations to drive from dursley where we are to stirling leaving off at 8am.
We got called at 6 that morning to say she had died in her sleep around 5:45 - All the effort and progress i made after the 12th was made with fond memories of my gran in my head and the sound of chet baker in my ears - and i realized how much warhammer she'd bought me over the years.
So, yeah; I look at these now and all i can think of is that line my gran said so often when i showed off my newly painted toys "Good enough!" (when she said it, it had a positive tone about it)
Oh, and "You don't have to be wealthy to have Class"
Sorry about that - On with the Reason why "The Furthest Group of Thallax" belongs in this months theme - "Never Tell Me The Odds!!"
There is much written before and after this section of text about this particular battle and i have been careful to not ruin the read for you.
You can find this story in full in HH book 1: Betrayal, page 58.
We had chosen the outer concourse to make our last stand, and to draw them in Decima had his last adepts crew a pair of armoured Proteus Land Raiders and a Grav-attack -- battlefield wrecks he'd repaired to the point of bare functionality -- they were to attack a known staging point and fieghn flight. It was a suicide mission, but the adepts did not say a word.
We were granted more than our wish -- one proteus returned to us aflame, and i cannot comprehend how it managed it, and in pursuit came a Fellblade super-heavy, smashing aside anything in it's path at the head of four Rhino-mounted squads, three in Sons Of Horus livery and one of the Death Guard.
Our valiant proteus slewed to a halt just near where our desperate plan had demanded and was a moment later kicked up in flame and tumbled across the concourse like an empty food canister as a shell from the Fellblade's main cannon took it.
We waited as the traitor armour fanned out in a cresent across the concourse, the Fellblades turret slowly traversing to cover them, and was joined a few moments later by a Death Guard Land Raider lumbering on damaged tracks.
The position was far from perfect, but Decima must have judged it was as good as he was going to get and he triggered the weapon. It looked like a brass star made out of twisted clockwork as it rose from the pit he had concealed it in and went skyward -- I know not what it was, perhaps some bastardised bomb made of the teleportation engine of his ship, perhaps something else. There was for a second a flash so bright, i could see the bones of my hand through my armoured gauntlets -- .we had been warned to deactiveate our armour beforehand and switch it on after the blast. When my autosense cleared i sw that half of the Fellblade was simply missing, as if it had been carved away by a knife, and of one of the Sons Of Horus Rhino's there was nothing left but a shadow burned onto the concourse. The rest had a curious, bleached-out qualityto them and had fallen still, save for the Land Raider. Further back and unscathed, it was reversing in retreat as swift as it was able as traitors spilled from the dead rhino's like puppets with tangled strings.
We rose from our concealed positions and cut down the ones in the open with bolter fire while the World Eaters charged in to finish the rest.
The Thallax smashed up from where they had been buried in the earth to block off the traitors' retreat and caught the Land Raider in the converging arcs of thier strange weapons, soot-black corposant dancing across it's hull untill it's tracks disintegrated and cannon sponsons detonated. The machine-creatures left it for dead, flame spewing from it's crew-ports.
Victory was ours, but triumph lasted only a moment as The Furthest Group Of Thallax was blown to pieces -- the shell blast exploding among them before we heard the report of the cannon that fired it. Another Fellblade was smashing through the city towards us.....
- From the Testimony of Crysos Morturg
So - Loyalists on Isstvan3 were the underdogs from the beginning and this particular cohort gets a k-kill and then are immediately wiped out.
Having been buried makes them more of an 'underground' dog sorry- joke withdrawn. :]
First pics to show the group as one - i am cutting the individual pics together so each model will have a single picture with all the angles i took as one for those who want a closer look - i will post them in this message when i've done that along with a comparison picture next to my 'factory-fresh' ones..

Cheers folks. We actually got married/had the wedding back in May but been so busy and it takes a bit of paperwork chasing over here to get the official/legal wedding certificate sorted. But, now it's done

Bloody hell, that's a long time for some paperwork!
Good excuse for a present to the self? >cough<warlord>cough<

Oh - I could make 'delaying', 'procrastination' and 'manana' into a world ruling religion!! I did have to go to the irish embassy in Seoul to get a document fro them but still.......but manana~ing this since June!!! Glad it's all done and dusted now!!
Do you mean "mañana"? Oh you foreigners and your uncivilised keyboards! "Vuelva usted mañana" "Come back tomorrow" is already a national religion here.
Good job everyone, happy paperwork januine! and sorry about your loss Donlad, your tallax look great, and the rest of your Ordo Reductor in your gallery is impressive.
yes of course 'mañana' - getting an énye on my korean computer is a pain in the ass and .....well...I'm lazy as hell
Finally - Genestealer #1 is finished!!!! This is gonna be a busy busy 4day weekend o.O
and there we go 'stealer #1 all done. Effects around his maw influenced by some of thirdeyenuke's work. If you havent checked their stuffout......do it. Amazing work
those look really good SirDonlad, they blend it excellently.
A small update from me on Han Solork and Chewborka as they are now called, almost there. I had a bit of an tragedy, I used legs that where already attached to a standard base for Han Solork and for some reason left the removal of that till last. Cutting him off I slipped and bashed his arm against the desk, his gun when flying off and if now somewhere in the room but I have no idea where, my ears told me if hit something solid to the right of me (could have been the desk, radiator, bed frame or window) but after 20 mins of searching its not been found :(
I'm away for a wedding this weekend so wont get time to make a grot2-D2 and a C3-POrk which is a shame. They will go in the ideas book for another time.
Also I finally bought a camera rather than using just using my phone. Enjoy! (still need to work out all the settings)

I would join the hell out of that religion. That genie is amazing! I may have to steal the scheme...

Aye Talys.....something like that...Monday or Tuesday at the latest lol thx though - very happy how he came out - viscious wee fether that he is!!
Cheers LeC - steal away. Not that hard a scheme to do - just lots of washes and a few layers. The metalwork took a little more. layers of DB and weathering powders

Gort2-D2 needs to be done!! Also, Luke skyw-ork-a and C3-POrk along with a suitably orky Landspeeder will be display-shelf worthy I recon! Maybe Obi wan ken-ork-bi and some Tau 'sandpeople' would go well with those? Also - feeling you on the camera front! My new friend is the 'infinity' setting on the focus selection.

I could stare at your work for hours man!
Cheers for your sympathies guys; I've enjoyed this whole month despite the things that life has thrown at me, and this thread has been great to take my mind off things - I can't wait to see all the entries on the 30th!
I am very envious of people capable of building terrain, I already have enough problems with basing, but then I see what people do and its like. Daaaaaaamn, that's good.
thanks to a somewhat lengthy hospital stay, and some terrible news, I am unable to complete this months challenge. I gotta bow out.
And before you think sad thoughts, the terrible news is I was convinced to start my own army. You can actually hear my wallet screaming in anguish.
Unashamed at copying my post from my Deathwatch blog :
Spoiler:
So I've made a little progress (microscopic more like). I've pinned all the components which is the first time I've ever done it. Wanted to have better detail on the torsos beneath arms etc:
Blocks are home-made from left-over wood
I've also decided that the Deathwatch are in a derelict building/spaceship so have made these bases:
They are all primed now, will start painting tonight.

Sad and happy thoughts to you both, bud Glad you're outta the hospital and grats on starting an army What kind/faction?
I guess I ought to try and finish my stuff, eh? Not been very well this week and got a bad case of All The Things To Do meaning I did None Of The Things.
I just haven't found the motivation to do mine. I've stared at the models too much to be entirely happy with them (I was fine when they were done, but the more I look the more problems I see. Never keep minis you're proud of at the time in direct view of your main workspace over several days, it's depressing) and thanks to being several hours drive from most of my supplies, my 'diorama' will consist of a CD covered in sand painted grey.
I was really hoping to come back fighting this month after my shoehorned entry last time, but the busy week in the middle has just been a kick in the teeth to any kind of coherent productivity (I've done minis I'm happy with before and after the break, but the project that spanned the two just slid to a halt). Still, I've definitely got something, or several something lined up for October, so I guess I'm just going for completion points this month.
(sorry for the rant, it's just been bugging me a fair bit!)
The painting is pretty much finished here, just begun to glue the Carnifex together, and of course I have made an error. The cannon arms are pointing slightly too low, meaning that they now foul the legs. That is going to be fun to fix without mucking up the paint job. Also I still have the base to do as well, but I am not being too adventurous with that so it should be rather straightforward.
Matthew wrote:I haven't really seen that many people finished - are everyone doing what I'm doing, saving the worst for last?
Four people plus LordRahl.
I reckon we'll get 10-15 finished. Dunno how that stacks up to normal.
Paradigm wrote:I just haven't found the motivation to do mine.
Ditto.
I don't dislike what I've done, but the idea of painting the rest of it makes me yawn. Expecially the cat. Doesn't help that the evenings are getting darker, and all I want to do is nap.
lol i know right, the few times i did finish it was last second yea its kind of a shame the hero clicks models weren't just a tad better quality, oh well there still usable for conversions

You've had a massive but of RL this month. Don't be so hard on yourself, and you Buttery!
For what it's worth a WIP, finished my first ever power weapon blade:
I am well aware that it is not the best example, but am pleased for a first effort.
Thanks Buttery, having seen your skills I'm sure you would nail it if you tried. I try to do something new each contest. Januine started me off with this idea ages ago which I'm grateful for. Now need to finish the rest of the model!

True, I really shouldn't be complaining as it's all going great in the Real World! But I will finish, all I have to do is paint a CD grey... which is boring as I don't know what, but necessary!

Awesome work mate, you never know what you can do until you try! That kind of PW blade is totally beyond me most of the time!
Thanks Para. I'm really trying to do what Januine suggests he does - try a new skill each entry. This is mine for this month.
This is a painting contest. The diorama/bases are just for flourish and fun. I bet your minis, as always will be great. I always look forward to seeing them.
On a side note, I forgot to say how impressed I am wig LordRahl's Gambit. Very good conversion, must have taken loads of planning. Executed really well!

I can't do the edge highlighting or understand the light points. Waiting to go for a tutorial with someone who knows what they're doing when we can afford the lesson, because it feels like something that would be really fun, but I've fethed it up every time.

I like this thought. I've been trying to do similar, terrain effects, airbrushing with the kelpie, stencilling with the plane, and this month I sucked it up and did eyes.
Lord Rahl I'll get you added to the OP ASAP, I'm having on and off dizzy spells at the moment and there's a limit to how badly I can mess up this post and effect people, but I can quite easily wipe the OP.
Buttery Commissar wrote: there's a limit to how badly I can mess up this post and effect people, but I can quite easily wipe the OP.
Been there, done that... don't think anyone noticed at the time... but in the Monsters round, I think it was, I accidentally deleted half the OP on about day 20 and had to go back through the whole thread and do it again...
Looks like I'll only get it half finished at best this month, unless the flip-paint experiment turns out really well. Lady is in hospital and the resultant invasion of inlaws has really buggered up the hobby time!
I have a bazillion epic marines that I accidentally bought trying to get that commissar. I don't know anyone in the area who would care to try.
Sounds like the makings of a pair of Epic Horus Heresy armies to me! Assuming you have enough for two decent forces, rather than just eleventy-million Tactical Marines... Paint up both sides, coerce/bribe/persuade/blackmail people into playing demos, have fun!
I think there's Tacs, termies, missiles, bikes, and two different types of tanks.
And thanks for the kind comments, guys.
Being that the 28mm commissar can't see his own mini (or in fact his own gun if you use the original pose), I'm wondering what to have him stare at. The positioning would be right to have him stare at the laptop, but what should be on the screen?
I need to finish his legs, fit him to his chair and do the paintbrush and highlighting...
The Dio needs the table attaching and the cabinet finishing, plus a calendar for the cabinet, the cat and it's little details, and tiny paint pots and cup brush holder for the table.

If you can manage it (and you painted a belt on a 6mm mini, so we know you can!) I suggest a calendar saying 30
Or a mini-dakka, that could be funny.
Edit: just seen that you're putting a calendar on the cabinet. So it's gotta be Dakka on the screen!
Wow Matthew you have gone all out this months, looking good
I notice I'm not on the list of entrants, proof is on page 4
I'm calling mine finished now, I couldn't find the gun that few off so replaced it with one without a scope that matched Han Solo's.
I would like to present Han Solork and Chewborka. Quite happy with my first attempt at real greenstuff work on my furry ork and Han's hair Hope you like them.
and finally a close up of the big guy
I tired to copy these images as the inspiration and why I choose these models for the theme.
That looks great Midget Gems! Look great! And thanks, I like it too. This is the second time I try OSL, the first being for the Fast and Furious contest
Sometimes, in the heat of battle, there's no time to do anything but fight, not even reload. Good job the side arm has a full magazine and the grenades on his belt are in place. Space Marines never relent in their duty. If at all possible, this is even more the case for those called to serve in the ranks of the Deathwatch.
Okay, deadline is this time tomorrow plus two hours. Midday UK time.
If you miss it due to time zone, work, or needing to get home and take pics, you may submit and I will add your entry to the poll any time I'm still awake within the 1st of October, but you must post before the end to tell me you will still be entering. Also consider I do often go to bed mid afternoon at the moment due to being poorly.
sweet - i'm def in Buttery but those extra few hours will defintely be needed. Bit off colour myself these days so havent got as much paintign done as I'd hoped. Cheers fella
No sweat fella, I'm being lax because this is a 30 day month and I know what it's like to be a bit behind.
I set my alarm to be up bright and early for 8.30 and get this painted, having gone to bed 10pm... I'm still in bed nursing a headache and black rungs under my eyes lol.
Guys I will be doing a demo of the topic post in here shortly before it goes up, please double check I've included you in it, and the pics / description you want.
Apologies Midget Gems, I knew you were taking part, I somehow fethed your proof pic.
I should manage to get some pics later... everything's done paint-wise, but the Dark Lord's arm has fallen off and I am out of superglue with no way to get hold of any in time.... Time for some blu-tac and clever photography angles!

Nice! lenses are clearly your speciality - fancy doing a short tutorial?
Just need to do a little baseing and grab pictures, almost there.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Final entry:
The frozen tundra exploded upwards, foul magics coalescing into a demonic form. “At last you show yourself. This madness ends now!”
“The madness is only just beginning” the demon chuckled “But your life is at an end, mortal.”
“We’ll see about that, warp spawn. For the Emperor!”
The roar of the relic chainsword vies with the crackle of eldritch energies as the Captain rushes towards his fate...
None of these words can be used to describe my entry this month, but here it is anyway!
Titled the Fall of Sauron, I freely admit I got someone else to do the fluff for me!
Victory was near, but the power of the ring could not be undone. It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Isildur, son of the king, took up his father's sword, and Sauron, enemy of the Free Peoples of Middle-Earth, was defeated.
Yeah, that's it. If I'm being perfectly honest, the pics aren't doing it a great deal of justice but between my 13-year-old camera and rudimentary lighting setup I'm struggling to get any decent shots at the moment. This is better in real life, although still very far from perfect.
If I get chance later I'll add some more pics, in the mean time this'll have to do. I can only apologise for my shoddy effort on all fronts here, but hopefully I'll come back swinging next time round! Already got a few ideas on the go...
Para, if you're ever interested (and not cramped into a student flat) I have a hand crafted terrain board of the area for that exact moment going begging.
Cliff, layout and all. The artist studied the scene frame by frame and built it. Nutter.
I bought it when he moved country, couldn't quite justify his Bridge of Khazad-dûm due to space.
Paradigm wrote: Cracking stuff, Nev! Only criticism I have is that the Cap's lenses don't look painted, but I'll overlook that as the mini is so awesome!
I blame my poor photography skills. That and his face is shaded by the huge honkin’ chainsword.

Spoiler:
Love the LotR dio. Great scene.
And all the other entries this month. It looks like I’m not alone in the last second rush.
one good way to avoid shading a part of the model because of a large weapon is to have two light sources, one fron the right and one from the left. Maybe one from above?
Matthew wrote: one good way to avoid shading a part of the model because of a large weapon is to have two light sources, one fron the right and one from the left. Maybe one from above?
One thing on my to-do list is to pick up some more desk lamps. I was using two for those shots, but as you say, a third would help a lot. I need to build a light box. It’s been on the to-do list for a few years now.
First of all, thank you to Buttery Commissar (spelling?) for arranging everything this month. I had a blast! Now, fluff and stuff. Unlimited pics right? Thirteen of 'em incoming.
"What do we do Sir!?"
Guardsman Jonah shouted. He was aiming his flamer at an approaching Tyranid, a fierce creature, that had killed all of his squadmates. The ground around him was on fire. "We have to warn the HQ, we should run for it!"
Captain Hogar shook his head. A beheaded Tyranid laid at his feet, his chainsword covered in blood. Human blood. He had been forced to kill several of his friends after they had been wounded by the monsters.
"We won't make it if be both run... You go. I'll distract them."
Jonah's jaw dropped. "What? No, you can't do that!"
"Yes, I can. You run. Run as fast as you can. Get to the HQ. Warn them. And Jonah..."
Jonah turned around and faced his captain, just in time to see him running against the edge of a cliff, preparing to jump.
"NEVER TELL ME THE OOOOOODDS!"
Jonah heard the fizz of a plasma pistol being fired and a chainsword whirring. He knew that although his captain was going down, he was going down in style.
Pictures (FINISHED!)
Spoiler:
I'm sorry for the bad photos... I hope you like it.
Some great entries on the last two pages! Voting should be pretty fun as always. Just as glad I sat this one out, as real life has been a pain lately and I haven't been able to spend as much time painting as I would like.
@Buttery: I hope you finish your mini completely. I'm sure we're all looking forward to it!
Fantastic final rush everyone, great to see so many finished entries popping up, looks like another tough month for voting!
Here are my final pics, with thanks to my Dad for taking them this month, as going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark is not helpful when you are trying to take some decent pictures!
Colonel Tigh Vs Carnifex:
Good luck to everyone that has taken part, and I will see you all for the next one!
'Fraid I'm out of this one folks. Not been feeling well recently and ther's no way am gonna finish in time today.Good luck all and great great stuff coming up here so far
Sorry, had to post this as a mate came round and we realized something about the fluff of my entry.
Assuming normality is present for the 'to hit' stage - six lightning guns at BS4 is four hits. The lightning gun is S7 AP3 heavy1 rending shred, so they would need four sixes to rend.
It says it's sponson weapons detonated and it's tracks disintegrated - we took that to mean both which means the rending rolls had to all be better than 1.
The 7th ed damage roll would therefore need to be two sixes and two fives.
Well it's been a crazy month and I there was a lot that I didn't get finished up the way I wanted. I thought I was well ahead of schedule earlier in the month but getting my kids back into the school routine really ate up a good portion of my painting time. Here's my final entry as I won't have any more time to finish up the remaining Marines:
From the Commissar's point of view - "Flaming Marine on top of a fuel depot. Never tell me the odds"
Sorry all, I am out I was so tired yesterday that I was blabbering incoherently and then passed out at 9 only to wake at 6 this morning. All components need far too much work to be considered an entry. Great entries from everyone so far.
@Buttery - great entry this month, I really hope the last push was enough
Last few hours, guys! If you need more time, let me know and there's an October 1st amnesty on submissions!
Crikey it seems like September has been a very tough month and lived up to its name.
I'll have to do a tally but I'm surprised at the number of entries. And after hearing how much work has gone into all of them, I'm struggling not to want to vote for every entry from everyone else.
Personally I woke up with a fever, I'm glad I got most of the work done last night because this morning will consist of stumbling around looking for a camera.
@Winterhound: that's awesome! I'd love some close-ups of the participants if you get the chance!
@Januine and TP: Nooooooooo! Such a shame you guys couldn't make it, your entries were both looking very promising! Take care of yourselves, and remember that even if you only have a couple of minis done you can submit them and still get the point! Similarly, if either of you finish in the next few days then let me know and I'll see that you get completion points.
You have an hour to check over this list, make sure I haven't missed anybody, and give me fluff and titles if I missed them.
Gives me time to finish punching my camera.

Matthew: "Bravery of the Guard" Diorama
Spoiler:
Midget Gems: Han Solork and Chewborka

Nevelon: "The Captain’s final charge"
Spoiler:
The frozen tundra exploded upwards, foul magics coalescing into a demonic form. “At last you show yourself. This madness ends now!”
“The madness is only just beginning” the demon chuckled “But your life is at an end, mortal.”
“We’ll see about that, warp spawn. For the Emperor!”
The roar of the relic chainsword vies with the crackle of eldritch energies as the Captain rushes towards his fate...
Paradiigm: The Fall of Sauron
Spoiler:
Victory was near, but the power of the ring could not be undone. It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Isildur, son of the king, took up his father's sword, and Sauron, enemy of the Free Peoples of Middle-Earth, was defeated.
SirDonlad: "The Furthest Group of Thallax"
Spoiler:
The Thallax smashed up from where they had been buried in the earth to block off the traitors' retreat and caught the Land Raider in the converging arcs of thier strange weapons, soot-black corposant dancing across it's hull untill it's tracks disintegrated and cannon sponsons detonated. The machine-creatures left it for dead, flame spewing from it's crew-ports.
Victory was ours, but triumph lasted only a moment as The Furthest Group Of Thallax was blown to pieces -- the shell blast exploding among them before we heard the report of the cannon that fired it. Another Fellblade was smashing through the city towards us.....

sockwithaticket: Deathwatch marine
Spoiler:
Sometimes, in the heat of battle, there's no time to do anything but fight, not even reload. Good job the side arm has a full magazine and the grenades on his belt are in place. Space Marines never relent in their duty. If at all possible, this is even more the case for those called to serve in the ranks of the Deathwatch.
Talys: Mephiston, Lord of Death

Paradigm has only one 'i' (which is admittedly better than only having one eye!), but beyond that typo I see no problem!
Gotta dash now, I shall check out everyone's entries in detail later on! I thought this month had been a tad slower than usual, but we seem to have a lot of entries, which is great!
I may be the special-est person here by having just realised I didn't include the miniature that the commissar was painting, it's still blu-tacked to my cork.
It just looks like he's flipping off Dakka. [Sighs] I'll get the camera again.
I've just spent the last hour doing battle with my 8 year old SLR to get the pictures of the model that's THREE INCHES AWAY FROM MY SCREEN into the compuer.
I should fething smear the thing into the monitor at this point.
My entry or no, the thread's going up, I'm fed up.

At the very least put up one of your in-progress pics as an entry.

That's harsh, I think we all knew you finished on time.
Congratulations to everyone else who made it, as is painfully obvious....I didn't!
But just for interest, here's a flip-paint base coated gene stealer, managed to finally get the mix right this morning bit late!

Holy gak, that is amazing! Mind telling me what you used? I've been looking for a petrol mix to do a Magma dragon with since I bought it. Closest I could find is Spaz Stix but it's not available in the UK.

Oh wow, thank you so much. I thought you had to buy giant cans of mixing fluids to use those pigments... I'm not very clued in on candy paints. I'm hoping to get a vaguely this-like effect on my big fat dragon, I think of him being tarry and rough. Don't worry, it's a totally different outcome to a beetly alien, the Magma dragon has a very coarse skin, like an iguana I think.

Thanks Para, I'll try and get at least one finished and post here. You can decide re completion points. In fact, I'll do some straight after writing this! (Oh and after entering for next month and gluing that entry together)
