That's a really cool pose. If you could break the weapons a bit closer together , think it would look even better, the arms seem a bit widely spaced currently.

Tim 121RVC, cool position for your first marine
Tittlemanscrest I really like the heat marks on the end of the tanks cannon. The whole piece is very well done.
A WIP on mine so far, meant to post this after last weekends session, With the bank holiday I should hopefully be able to get some more paining done.
So far I've dremeled out the torso and arms + tops of legs so you can see there is a grot actually in there, because I knew I'd be chopping the legs up I picked some already primed legs from my bits box, however when I went to paint them I released a lot of the detail has been lost due to the previous owners over enthusiastic application of paint. Oh Well. I've still to putting some cabling in round the back and battle damage.

Finished, and with time to spare too! Most unusual.
Sergeant Baradiel

As a devastator sergeant he's meant to have a signum, but I loathe the official bit; it's so cumbersome looking. So I've given him what is essentially a combi-markerlight, a servo skull (which, if you look closely has 3 different laser targetters of it's own along with the lens), head with targetter and a scope with the lens painted in a different colour to my ordinary ones in order to try and convey all the optics and targetting technology. He's in a 'scanning battlefield' pose, hence the skull and him facing in different directions.
Was going to give him one of the many heads with a bionic eye in my possession, but most of those have the bionics on the right and that would clash with the scope which, I think, makes the gun look much cooler. Those with bionics on the left wouldn't really allow for the head roatation needed to make the pose work. Black metal of the combat blade makes sense in the fluff I'm writing for him, basically he's a weapon tinkerer and is experimenting with different alloys to get a sharper harder edge that might make a blade rival a chainsword as a weapon choice (sometimes there's no petrol resupplyin a protracted conflict and chainswords just become metallic baseball bats). ~
His name is that of the angel of hail, which seemed failry apposite as he'll be leading a squad of four heavy bolters when I'm done.

Jan - that ichor is super icky, man and I really like the pale flesh of the genestealer. I guess if you spend all your time hanging out in Space Hulks you don't get a lot of vitamin D.
Good dark red on Goriel and the black is lovely. With all the bling it's quite easy for SH Terminators to look very busy, but you've mitigated that well with consistent colour choices that don't jar with the scheme as a whole and demand focus on individual bits.

Thanks very much Sock. The 'paintmymini' app that TP recommended me is really really handy for storing paint recipes and schemes. Looking forward to doing more of these boys. Toned the reds down and darker than the usual BAs - dead happy how they've turned out.

I've already submitted my final pics, but I thought the photos made the red look a bit flat.
So I've re-done some of the highlighting. Still not convinced. Am I being way too subtle with my highlighting? Or is it just the crappy pictures (they look okay in 'real life'). I know I should be using a light box, but do I need to change my painting too?

Looks very nice. One thing that stands out to me is the separation of the mini and the base. While weathered, the dread has clean feet. The base is either glistening mud, or the dread has a hydraulics leak and made a puddle. If the base is mud, I’d expect to see some muck about the lower legs/feet.
(Not to be critical, I like the work you’ve done. Just something that seemed off to me)

For a newby I can't see anything wrong with your models, they are certainly tabletop quality, I think bad lightning is the main thing though, try a plain white background or a darker stand, using the black and the white confuddles the camera's autobalancing

I'm a first time comp participant too. Maybe there should be a second vote for best rookie (although I've been painting on and off for 20+ years, I'm a rookie to this comp, and no better than table top standard anyway). Rookie's could maybe be anyone who's entered 3 times or fewer.

Not in it to win it, as there's some incredible stuff already on this thread! But as they are the first Marines I've finished in about 16 or 17 years, I'm fairly happy with them. The black / white split harks back to my childhood Marines, who were half black / half silver, the story being that half the chapter fell to chaos, so the armour was painted half black in penance. The more fallen comrades you kill, the whiter your armour gets!

These were more of a build than a paint, I wanted to see if I could make the missile launcher armature, and if I could get a bolter with a stock actually look like it was tucked into someones shoulder.
Every month I keep telling myself, "I will buy a better camera and stop using my phone." Never happens.

This being my second entry, I considered this as a suggestion but decided not to. I have to admit that I like being side by side with all the entries straight off the bat, as it makes me aspire to do better paintjobs on my models - If I were to win a rookie-award, it would feel a tad like a consolidation prize to me, instead of just doing what I could to prove my painting beside the other contestants.
I do get where you're coming from though, as it can be daunting to enter a competition of talented painters like this one - The display of skill and craftsmanship is stunning! Just keep at it and if you need any tips and/or guides, head to peoples project logs. They are usually very helpfull and glad to explain how they achieve the particular look they have on their miniatures.

I, too, am done.
Really annoying, I knew that his knife was somewhere, but in looking at how to paint it saw that he was missing his chain crux and his elbow shield thing - FORTUNATELY managed to find that in the first box I looked in, after I had completely reorganised everything yesterday looking for the bloody knife.
Then I had to colour match the silver and gold, without airbrushing or oil washing - I WAS FINISHED LIKE TWO WEEKS AGO AND STILL MANAGED TO LEAVE IT TO THE LAST MINUTE!
Anyway, here is my Ultramarine Deathwatch Space Marine

Seems like we are getting a reputation You don't have to think you'll win to enter, I just have fun and take part in the hobby are the reasons why I enter, hence my mods, I do rather enjoy doing them.
I'll add mine to the list of finished models now. I think I succeed in making it look like he wasn't just a Grot head stuck on a SM body. (got to represent the Orks KD )
Managing to survive enough battles and Ork Mealtimes this plucky Grot has saved enough teef to pay a very Mad Mad Doc to implant him into a set of salvaged Space Marine Bits and give him power weapons from a generator in the backpack.

Impressed you got your entry changed in a day, I can only look on envious at your painting speed and quality in that time.

God dammit MG!
You can't just murder the competition like that and be so nice about it!
Brilliant work dude, and everyone. I'm looking forward to have time to catch up on all the entries as this baby is causing mayhem (which is to be expected)
For folks worried that they can't paint well enough to win, think about it in a different way. You've got what amounts to a free ticket to play in the grand final of whatever sport you like here, some truly remarkable painters will be painting there with you. You will improve drastically if you continue to rub shoulders with people more skilled than you, if anything you should feel bad for Januine, Midget Gems, Paradigm, et al - it's harder for them to be inspired
Don't worry about getting no votes either, that tends not to happen. I don't vote for the big names unless they are utterly amazing, I expect a lot from them if they want my vote. Johnny Nobody who has battled through a model and produced a result above his normal skill level that he is proud of, however, they always get my vote.

Can't speak for the others, but the inspiration I do get from this is on a monthly basis is a huge part of the reason I run this thing, not only because of the fantastic entries from the likes of Jan and MG (both far more talented than I am) but also because of the first steps I see people taking like the entry above; seeing a first mini, or someone trying out a new technique or just improve is a HUGE part of this whole thing, and a constant testament to the excellent P&M community here on Dakka and to the effort, skill and dedication of the entrants. It really is inspiring in the truest sense of the word!

Superb stuff for your first mini, picking up the brush for the first time and putting paint to plastic is something that requires a lot of confidence and commitment, so already deserves congratulations!

Basically, what he said!

Narik Dreygur, The Gravewalker, Consul-Praevian of the Iron Warriors Legion...
a lovely sculpt from Forge World, one of their 2015 event exclusive minis...
here is an experiment in Chrome Sky-Earth True Metalic Metal...
how is that for a mouthful???
fun to try and inject more color and action into what is usually a pretty utilitarian color scheme...
sadly, the sky-blue reflection on the upper surfaces doesn't show up well in the pics:(...
A really interesting take on SETMM, especially combining Chrome and the TMM style rather than the typicall NMM.
As you say the sky-blue upper parts look a bit absent in the image, but I quite like the overall effect. Whilst it doesn't really look like SETMM, but still creates a really interesting metallic armour, it's almost textured.
I think the major problem you probably ran into was finding the horizon line, painting TMM would have made that incredibly hard.

Aaaaand done!
I'd like to say painting Sergeant Gideon was fun but that would be utter twaddle. The model itself is awesome and painting it has made me re-appreciate how fantastic the Space Hulk minis are. The problem came from the fact that the last time me and the Mrs sat down and played Space Hulk, we did so with 'atmospheric' candle lighting. Unbeknownst to me, Gideon (and presumably several other models) got a handsome splattering of wax that I failed to take care of properly before I started painting him and.. yeah, you can probably imagine.
Anyway, it was fun to step outside my comfort zone, if only for a month (I'm planning on painting as many Orks as I can in April!).

Good luck everyone and see you next month!

OMG. That big gun took way longer to paint than I guessed O.o Hard to tell on these pics because I didn't have time to take a lot of them, but the inside and hidden bits are all painted, which took quite a bit longer than I guessed. And assembling it cleanly afterwards (so that everything fits perfectly...) took quite a while. But I made it in the nick of time! Here you go, the Space Marines weapon! In case anyone is curious, the gun itself (the plasma gun-looking-part, that is) is TMM with an airbrush, as are the plasma coils. Edit @ 10:19pm to replace with some better photos

Absolutely love all the models posted and I have been drooling over them all daily

Okies, first off -
you have paint in all the right places. You have a coherent colour scheme. And trust me, that looks better than my first mini! The whole thing with the camera is it's good at showing up errors overall. And you are well on your way to doing good things ( TM). Love that wolf tail!
