Thanks guys you know I hadn't even thought of BFG! :S I'll look to see if there's some comparable units in that for what I've got in mind never played it though...

Yeah I did think the bike seats are a little too obvious. I'd like to sort them, but I haven't got any GS and didn't have a suitable bit to cover them with. TBH it's probably about time I got some GS!

Thanks Kestral I've discovered some fairly ancient GS in one of my old hobby boxes so I'll have a go at disguising the seats soon

As for progress, I'm nearly done with the modelling of my Ynnari Dire Avengers I've got a little bit of work to do building up the helmets so that the faceless section is a bit more rounded and smooth, probably with Liquid Greenstuff when I get some

I tried Grave Guard legs, but the monopose for them is pretty severe. Every single one is in the exact same pose, which looks good in a regiment of undead, but not so much on a squad of round-based dudes. Can't wait until they get round to AoS-ing some of the older Fantasy factions so I can pinch bits from them! Til then, Flagellant legs will have to do

Oh, also came up with a little bit of background fluff for my Prophet

Deep in the bowels of Commorragh, a metallic clatter echoed through the depths as one of Malcarta's servile units dropped its workload. Searing white light burned through its neurones as its life flashed before its eyes. Birth and early years on Craftworld Angvellaith, railing against its oppressive atmosphere. Tears of his mother as he left to follow the Outcast Path. First firefight aboard the Corsair Corvette 'The Shadow Lingers in Twilight'. The terrible debt he accrued with the twisted haemonculi. The subtle psychological conditioning worming into his mind as he sold himself to servitude. Dullness of sensation as he carried out his masters wishes decade after decade. Death and resurrection, over and over.

It all burned in blinding clarity as memories reasserted themselves. Feeling flowed through his aching limbs. Psychic potential blossomed in his cerebelli. One face filled his newfound vision: Yvraine. He knew he had felt the kiss of death and the rush of resurrection many times before. Nonetheless he was reborn.

Lastly, what self-respecting protagonist would go without a mortal enemy?

Since they first came out, I've always loved the Oldcron fluff, especially pitching them as an ancient mythic enemy of the Eldar. I was always used to the Eldar being the oldest and wisest of the 40k races, and discovering just how young they truly are was a beautiful shock to the system their fluff had the absolute perfect balance of threat, terror and mystery for them to be utterly intriguing.

Whatsmore, models and artwork like this just absolutely captivated me

So, I just had to make some proper Oldcron Yngir adversaries to my Eldar. Not some lame-ass Tomb Kings...in spaaace. Proper alien eldritch terror from the depths of prehistory that even the Eldar don't remember

Thanks guys

Yeah I'm really pleased how the Lord turned out he's based on the Lychguard kit as they're fluffed as having the same chassis as Lords, and they're quite a bit bigger than standard Necrons. The head is a Necron Destroyer head, the tattered cloak is from the Wraith that sits on the Vampire Counts Corpse Cart and the claw is from a Sylvaneth Spite Revenant

Couple of little touches on him too it seems to me that having an extended spine (either upwards or downwards) seems to be reserved for higher ranking Necrons. So, from a paleocultural perspective (is that a word? should be...), either Necrons had tails, or more likely having an extended spine was a sign of superiority in ancient Necrontyr culture. So, I've given him a tail and mashed together the Lychguard and Praetorian spines to extend it upwards further

The other thing that I like doing is making HQ units taller than other soldiers so they stand out, either by having them leaping or standing on scenery. Having him carried forth on a swarm of flesh-eating Scarabs seemed too cool of an idea to pass up!

I'm glad you like the Dire Avengers Gummy while I absolutely adore the Dire Avenger models (they're the archetypal Craftworld warrior for me), I do feel like I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make the Ynnari versions a little more ragged

The legs are from the Empire Flagellants kit yeah. They actually come as a torso and legs in one piece, but they helpfully have a bit of a waist that you can neatly clip through to separate them

Latest bit of kitbashing Storm Guardians are up to 5-strong now. Need some more Wych legs and female Guardian torsos. Also, can't decide whether to give them flamers or fusion guns...

Also, I'd like to introduce you to the first of Khali's Bloodbrides

Thought a neat way of representing the extra attack Bloodbrides have is with some extra arms to make that attack!

I've also got a bit of an idea for a small Wych Cult based on 'enhanced' gladiators an idea shamelessly stolen from Eye of Error's fantastic Lelith Hesperax conversion:

Now, I had promised myself I'd paint something next, but sometimes you get an idea that is just too awesome to let wait...

I've thought for a while that since I made Thaegr the horned Son of Kurnous/Autarch dude that my winged Autarch was looking a little...I don't know...unadventurous...

Then, sifting through bits while looking for something else I came across two unused Tree Revenant arms and I had a bit of a lightbulb moment. 2 hours of modelling later and behold!

Absolutely chuffed to bits with how this one's turned out!

And done!

Myrdolaith, Hawk-Friend, Stormbringer, Daughter of Faolchu. Prince of the Selestini of the Sandspires
The great hawk pierced the vale between the webway and soared out over alien skies. She felt the rush of thermals rising from the industry below beating at her feathers, and watched from on high as the humans scurried about their business far below. Vermin, she thought, infesting their ancient lands.

She perched on an outcrop, wraithbone talons finding tenuous purchase on the mountainous rock, and stared down intently at the settlement below. She spied the bright heraldic trim of the Knight World the vermin called Salazar's Rest. Their warriors were on guard at this early stage of colonisation, and clustered around a hulking mechanical creature that was belching vast exhaust plumes into the atmosphere.

They would take a great deal of effort to dislodge from this world. She would have to return with many warhawks to drive them back. For now, she would have to content herself with picking off a straggler to bring back to her clan as evidence of the trespass. Selecting a suitable quarry, she let out a keening cry and plummeted from her outcrop, eyes fixed on her unwitting prey.

Yeah one evening to make and one evening to paint, but I can assure you that it normally takes a hell of a lot longer!

It's also quite refreshing to paint an individual model as opposed to a squad of 10 of the same dudes. I think part of the reason I've got so many HQs is to intersperse the regular squads and keep me sane!

Came up with a little fluff for Lhorizar my Void Dreamer today, inspired slightly by the background to the Aethermancy Corsair psychic discipline, and how it draws its power from the webway rather than the warp.

You see, the Void Dreamer explained, his wings curling round him as he held his meditative pose, the webway itself has a pulse and a power all of its own. The Craftworlders don't feel it. They spend far too long gazing into the dreaming future to notice the subtle fluctuations in the fabric of the present. My Commorite kin could likely feel it, if they didn't persecute any throwbacks such as myself who show an ounce of psychic potential.

Urgebelach, the Harlequins call it. The study of how you can change the webway, and how it changes you in return. Its very fabric permeates both the warp and the material universe, and with skill can act as a conduit between them. The webway has changed the fibres of my mind, and I have learnt its heartbeat. I call out to it, and its voice flows through me.

Wheeling that out provided the motivation to go back and fix the slightly dodgy starscape I had on the Void Dreamer's helmet. Much better in just jet black

As for the triumvirate, I wanna get yvraine painted sometime soon, but the bonesinger + any other units are probably gonna come before her.

Is yours gonna be converted?

Haha! Oddly I'm more excited about the Bonesinger than any of the Triumvirate. Really do love that model not that I'm not keen to see your Triumvirate after your frankly stunning Harlies of course

I've got a couple of ideas that I want to try out with the Triumvirate the Yncarne I want to make a little more alien and deathly, in both paint scheme and modelling-wise.

The Visarch won't be the Visarch at all, but will use his model as a base

Yvraine unfortunately I'm having a little trouble thinking of something to do with her, but I'm sure I'll think of something open to ideas though!

My gaming group loves my harlies too.. I entered in my Visarch into my local GW's Battle of the brush and everyone said my skyweavers would have won if I threw them in, It's a shame I didn't!

For yvraine, maybe expand on the whole princess thing, except like a dryad princess? just a thought.. I'm drawing a blank too.

I'm excited to see what you'll come up with!

Thanks Amazingturtles my painting is definitely best described as 'sporadic'

Yeah your Harlies are a masterclass Gummi really, really nice models

I think I might have come up with something for Yvraine, depending on how the kit's composed in the leg department. I think I'll go a little more stark and subdued than the original GW model. much though I do actually like the whole 'Oriental Opium Den Queen' look

Thanks dude! Yeah I love the extra arm wyches I've got a Succubus (Khali herself) that I can't wait to get finished, but is awaiting some of those kickass Talos vestigial arms.

The whole thing for the Haemi coven/Wych Cult will be a sort of insectoid multi-limbed thing which I'm really looking forwards to

The Necrons I'm really looking forwards to as well they're a bit of a side-project to the Eldar, but I really want to do some more horror-style 'crons. For instance, I love the old Wraith models that have that little more humanity to them with their standard faces so I'd love to do that with the new plastics, and I'm fairly certain I can fix the new Flayed Ones models with a little GS too

Latest bit of stuff that's not painting :S

Was inspired by this frankly awesome Sylandri Veilwalker (with Mask of Secrets!) made from the Silver Tower Mistweaver by Rollingawaythestone here on Dakka:

https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2017/3/2/860990_md-.JPG
He's got some really sweet Harlies called the Ghosts of the Webway here: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/702696.page

I informed him that I liked it so much I'd be stealing the idea! He was flattered, so here we go:

To be perfectly honest I think Rolling's one's better, the lack of hair makes it look a little more alien and his mask is more recognisably Harlequin, but I quite like mine and had to change it up slightly

Thanks again for letting me shamelessly steal this idea!

Haha, more like great minds flagrantly steal the same ideas

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery though, so RollingAwayTheStone should be proud!

While I did put a lot of effort into the mask, I'm not sure if it's actually paid off TBH. I do like those Sisters of Slaughter masks, but I think a Harlie mask might look better overall. What do you think?

Also, I managed to completely blank on my own suggestion to Rolling. I thought it would be a neat idea to use one of the grenade backpacks from the Kabalite kit as a Shadowseer backpack and completely forgot when it came to making mine... :S

Thats what I eventually decided too. Mistweaver Saih is such an awesome model - but it felt slightly too fantastic and I needed some elements to make it clearly a Harlequin. I think with the Kabalite backpack it will be undeniable.

Absolutely

I think yours sans-hair will work much better with the backpack (which would really hammer home the 'Shadowseer' look). I don't have one spare to test, but I think the hair will foul on the backpack if left in place...

Changed the mask though and it's definitely more recognisably Harlequin

For a few tense moments Mohruin and the Slaaneshi Marine circled each other, sizing up their opponent. Without warning, the augmented human lunged. Combat knife met venom blade, sparks skittering as Mohruin parried wildly. This mon keigh was fast. He hadn't been expecting that. Blows rained down upon him as the astartes set to work with savage glee. It was all he could do to avoid being torn asunder by the ferocious assault. Disengaging for a split second he keyed the command for his drug dispenser. Hypex flooded his circulatory system, wrenching him into a state of hyper-consciousness. The sound of his accelerated breathing assaulted his senses. The colours of his surroundings stung his unblinking eyes. Nerves searing with the speed of their reaction he set about his counter-attack. Strikes rang out like church bells to his enhanced senses, chunks of ceramite exploding where he outmanouvered his foe. His movements were ragged, twitchy...but fast. Blindingly fast. Subconsciously he found himself subtly manipulating the anti-gravity generators in his jetpack, jerking clear of snarling counter-strikes. Veering away from a vertical strike, he clasped his sword in both shaking hands and violently activated his thrusters to lend momentum to his sideways strike.

He staggered aside as the astartes' torso slid apart. The sound of his rapid heartbeat thundered in his ears, red dots clouded his vision where blood vessels had burst. Fingers twitching erratically, he keyed the drug dispenser to release the anti-venom into his bloodstream. Twitches and tics calming, he paused for a second to recover his breath. "Sweet dreaming Lileath that was exhilarating", he muttered in awe.

Voidstorms!

Thanks dude I must admit, I am a little proud of the edge highlighting on the thigh armour. Edge highlighting's never been something I've felt comfortable with, and this is the first time I fell like I've got it right especially on the dude front and centre.

Glad you like the fluff piece! I was thinking about combat drugs before writing it, and how it's the Dark Eldar that are making them. They're not going to be 'smoke this it'll make you see funky colours' drugs. They're going to be so intense that they're downright painful, but so utterly exhilarating that it's worth it. That alongside the distinct feeling that if you're on them for more than a fleeting moment they'll probably kill you

Had some bits arrive today that I'd been waiting for for ages it seems! So, without further ado:

The vat-born gladiator stood in the dank unfamiliar room, her finely honed body still glistening with fluid from the amniotic chamber. Noticing that she was not alone, Khali sprawled out low to the ground, feet spaced wide and steadied by a third hand planted on the ground, head cocked to one side. Her hooked lower arm extended out to the side, and the upper raising a curved knife above her head, evoking primal visions of scorpions in the mind of the Astartes before her.

The grav-shackles released with a clank and the Astartes bolted forwards, snatching a long serrated blade from the chamber floor. The hulking human settled into a well-honed combat stance, the dried blood of its previous adversaries caked into its matted hair. The Astartes lunged forwards, blade searching for purchase on Khali's frame, but she was quick to dodge this first strike. The augmented brute circled around, wrapping a chain around its free hand. Khali leapt out, catching the warrior by surprise and raking her knife across its forearm. She rebounded from the wall behind and landed a double-armed jab on her opponents torso. Barely registering this assault, the Astartes lashed out with a brutal punch, ribs cracking beneath its slab-like fist, throwing Khali across the room. Coughing blood, she staggered to her feet just in time to avoid another strike as the Astartes pressed its advantage. She sunk her knife into its leg, which elicited a grunt of pain but not much else, and the Astartes swung its blade wide nearly cleaving her in twain. Khali blocked another haymaker, gasping in pain as her forearm broke beneath the blow. Rebounding from the blow, she pirhouetted fast. Lashing out, her hook found purchase in the Astartes' throat. Momentum tore through muscles and arteries in a great gout of blood and the formidable soldier slumped to the ground. Staggerring sideways she stumbled to one knee, taking deep shuddering breaths. Bloodied and broken, but alive.

In the shadows behind her, an arachnid-like Haemonculus scrawled into her research notes. 'Subject K-46...shows promise'.

She's based on this brilliant Lelith conversion by Eye of Error:

I hope I've done it justice!

I also had some Wych legs turn up, so thought I'd do a little step-by-step for my next Bloodbride hopefully they're simple enough that it won't put people off from trying, but enough to show people some tips

So, to kick it off, the tools of the trade

Pair of electrical clippers (have a wedged cutting edge rather than a flat one like hobby clippers which is worse! Not sure why I've not bought a pair of proper clippers yet), plastic glue and a very large reasonably sharp knife. I tried a scalpel/hobby knife a while ago and managed to snap the blade. Personally I prefer the hunting knife as it's actually a bit safer. There's more surface area to hold it by, and it's easier to get leverage on without slipping. Probably more importantly, it's what I'm comfortable with. Oh, and there's a dremel too but I don't use that for most conversions

Anyway, enough about the wrong tools for the job...

Here's what we start with:

Wych legs and a couple of Wych kits with most of the bits picked off them (one kit would do, but I don't have a full one left).

Might seem simple, but legs go down first. They're the only fixed part of a multi-pose model, so the whole pose will stem from what the legs look like.

Then bodies go on. I always find that putting a body on at a degree of rotation, even if it's just a slight one, helps with making a pose look both natural and dynamic. Since these guys are running full-tilt, they get quite a big degree of rotation. It's also good to vary up which way they face

Then, we get to the main bit I wanted to use in the first place. Razorflails!

Here's where the trick to 4-armed stuff comes in You cut off the rounded bit at the top of the shoulder to make a flat face like so:

...and stick it to the body using that new flat edge. That gap below we'll use to fit the lower arm.

Now, this frankly godawful picture is where the other Razorflail arm wants to sit, which won't quite work for us. Not only did it not really look in the right position compared to the other arm now (if in doubt about a pose, I find that physically acting it out helps you to get where your various body parts sit naturally), but there's also no space for the lower arm. A bit of holding it up in different places got to where I want it to be:

So, clip off the rounded end a bit. I also found that there wasn't much space for the lower arm to wedge in so I shaved the underside of the arm joint to make is slimmer.

More holding it in place showed that it still didn't seem high enough, fouling on the leading edge of the shoulder pad so that had to go.

And glued in place with a space to wedge the lower arm in again

Now, if you were just reposing you could fill those gaps in with GS. But for these guys, we'll use these

Took a little bit of sifting through bits to get the right arms. One of the things I wanted to do on these is to have each pair of arms (upper and lower) mirror each other somewhat in pose. I tried just picking out cool arms, and they just look like they were flailing wildly windmilling all over the place. With paired poses, they look much more cohesive

So, hold it up in place to see what sort of angle you want to cut...

...cut the end of the arm into a wedge shape...

...realise you've cut it wrong and the arm's much further back in its swing than you planned...

...look at it from a couple of angles and decide that it looks cool anyway so glue it in place

With a bit of work shaping and trialling the wedge you can get it to fit quite snugly which will prevent the need for GS.

Then, repeat the procedure with the other arm hold in place to get the wedge shape. Cut it. Skim it down so it fits snugly and glue it in place

Last thing to go on is the head most of the time I'll spend a little while holding the head in different positions to see what looks cool, but this one was obvious. If he's hitting something with his sword then he's going to be looking at what he's hitting.

And done!

Hope that was helpful

Also got the bits to finish the Shardnet Bloodbride I'd mostly done

And all three done so far

Very excellent tutorial, the finished models are top notch and will truly stand out as some amazing bloodbrides. In comparisons my bloodbrides just kinda come across as... lazy and simple. Just a little bit jealous now.

Lazy and simple?! Now I won't have that your Bloodbrides are some of my favourite models, just because it's such a simple change yet so effective I've always thought it's about picking the right bit, not necessarily the most complicated. Plus, it's not exactly a walk in the park mating the neckless Sisters of Slaughter heads to Deldar torsos...

Oh, and I'm fairly certain they outshine everything I've ever done in the paint department same goes for your Harlies too Gummy in that regard

Uneven footsteps echoed out through the ruined and creeper-riddled hall. A clank of armour, and a far heavier thud of a wraithbone replacement, slightly too long to produce an even gait. The ancient High Lord of Selesti stalked through his domain. "I am Lord of this place you tread", he spoke with an authority born of millennia of rulership, his iron voice echoing through the chasms. "Lord since before your kind rose from the depths, and Lord long after they will be consigned to dust."

"Tremble before me, worm-kin. I have watched your upstart Gods rise, and I will watch as they fall. Meet me here, plaguebringer. Meet me here and test your resolve. Your Gods are watching. Do not disappoint."

Raodruin, Godborn, Allfather, Son of Asuryan. High Lord of Selesti. Ancient almost beyond comprehension, the High Lord of Selesti still remembers the great exodus and the Fall of his empire in the depths of his rheumy memories. Prior to the Fall, he was a member of an ancient, secretive and reviled sect of Eldar culture. Called Carrac Noill (lit. Soul Drinkers), these ancient beings practiced what amounts to vampirism. Murderously, they would prise the soul from another Eldar and encorporate it into their own. Through this, they would achieve a continuity of existence that even reincarnation could not promise. Clouded memories of the legends of his forebears told of how they were some of the earliest rulers of the ancient eldar, not long after Eldanesh himself, and how they were hunted and persecuted after their fall from grace. Whether this was truthful, or merely hubristic justification of their crimes was lost to the hazyness of countless millennia. Still, the vast experience accumulated through his unnaturally extended lifespan had seen his people through the great exodus, and the many trials they had endured in the years since the Fall. Surely that was atonement enough for his crimes. He was growing weary of life, he could feel it. Each night, the susserus of lost souls would get bolder. Each fresh hunt would sustain him that little less. Still, he thought, he must go on. Without his guidance Selesti would surely fall, and its people be swallowed whole by the aether. This is something he would never let come to pass. No matter the cost.

The minute I saw the Triumvirate box I knew that feathered cloak seems tailor-made for an Exodite lord

If anyone was wondering about the fluff (specifically the Soul Drinker part), it's based on one of my favourite little excerpts from one of the old codices:

There's so much information hinted at here in such a small little picture. The bit that set me thinking was the little rune down at the bottom right. Soul Drinker: Also scavengers, looters, parasites, vermin, dying, diabolical, daemonic and decaying. One of the most hideous rune-concepts in the Eldar language. It's connected to the Dark Eldar rune next to it, but not the same. It's also distinct (although similar) to the rune for Slaanesh.

I've always thought that having the 'Eldar Empire' as this unchanging monolithic structure existing for millions of years was unrealistic. Much more likely that there have been many, many different forms of Eldar civilisation throughout the millennia, much like humanity has gone through the DAoT, Age of Strife, the Great Crusade, and the final slow inexorable slide into ruin that's occurring in the year 40k. All of that history will have either been consigned to myth, or lost to the sands of time. Plus, this being the grimdark universe of 40k at least some of those forms of civilisation are going to be pretty nasty.

So, I came up with the idea that the concept of a 'Soul Drinker' pre-dated both Slaanesh and the Dark Eldar, and that it refers to one of these previous forms of Eldar civilisation, consigned to vague myth. Plus, it being a pretty revolting rune-concept, it probably refers to something that's both a bit nasty and importantly defeated. History is written by the victors, after all.

Drawing a bit on Fantasy Vampire Counts, I thought of the idea that these proto-soul drinkers first discovered that they could ingest another creature's soul just like the Dark Eldar do now, and used this newfound ability to rise to power over the early Eldar civilisation (possibly in the power vacuum caused by the death of Inriam the Young, last of the line of Eldanesh). However, they would have had to be deposed (probably violently) a long time before the Empire came about for their story to be forgotten in all but a single, reviled, rune-concept.

Thinking of what happens to entrenched regimes that get violently deposed, the survivors scatter to the winds and go into hiding. So, we get to the point where these 'soul drinkers' are a secretive subsect of Eldar society who are hunted by the rest of their culture, again drawing on the 'vampires and vampire hunters' trope. Raodruin is one of the descendants of this culture.

However, because 40k thrives on grey-areas, you can't have these kin-slaying murderous vampires be pure evil. The utter destruction of their civilisation would have effected them just as much as the Eldar that hunted them (if any believed they still existed outside of myth at that point). Most, I'd imagine, would be well entrenched in the debauchery that gripped the Empire. Some would likely find a home with the Dark Eldar (although I imagine that in a twist of fate, most of those would have come to a sticky end at the hands of the Haemonculi while they discovered the secrets of their soul-drinking abilities). Others I'd imagine would have the same foresight that others of their kind had, and deduce that if their civilisation died then they would die with it.

Raodruin is one of that latter group, and led the Selestini to their new home. In protecting his people he has found new purpose beyond simply self-preservation. However, this new conscience he has developed racks him with guilt, as in order to maintain the strength to protect his people he needs to hunt them down and consume their souls.

Apologies for the wall of text, but thought you might like to read some of the backstory

I've also got a little WIP process for anyone that's interested in the modelling

Spoiler:
Take 1 standard Visarch kit

I've got a bit of a thing that HQs should be more physically imposing than the rank and file, and the easiest way to do this with Eldar models is to stick them on some ruins the rubble from the High Elf Lord kit should work nicely

Trimmed to size, and I'm sure that little bit left over will come in handy

Next up is the legs.

This is basically what I was going for. Clip off the Tree Revenant leg, and offer it up to the Visarch legs to see what sort of angle you need. Then, clip off the Visarch leg and discover that you've got the angle wrong again (noticing a trend?). It's always useful to cut off a little further up than you actually need so you've got some extra material to play with when (not if) you get it wrong.

After a bit of faffing about I got them to mate up neatly enough. So glued in place and onto the base, making sure that the back foot covers up the hole in the High Elf ruins.

Next up is the body here's the plan:

After some fairly fraught cutting and clipping, I managed to separate the little masks and the cloak intact (it's too cool of a bit to ruin, if I didn't want to keep it it would have been much easier to remove)

Onto the tabard.

The Visarch cloak is blowing to the left, but the tabard is blowing to the right. The only way you'd get that happening in real life is if the character is spinning his torso around, which doesn't quite fit with the relatively static pose of the Visarch. So, we cut it apart and repose it.

Much better!

Glue it in place, and I must admit I'm not sold. It adds a lot of visual bulk to the lower torso that just doesn't look right (you'll hear me witter on about 'visual bulk' quite a lot with the Triumvirate, although with a little modification they can be very delicate indeed).

To test out whether it'll still look ok, I started gluing together the rest of the model.

When I went to test it again, I accidentally pulled apart the tabard and thought it looked much better cut down! Result

Now, right arm (again, Tree Revenant):

I forgot to get a picture on the glaive arm, but this one should demonstrate. A lot of AoS stuff now has sculpted connection areas for arms, meaning that they naturally fall into a single pose on a sculpted to fit torso. This makes the models themselves a lot friendlier to put together for a novice, and thanks to the sheer variety of bits on AoS models you don't get monopose stuff, which is very impressive

Luckily, it means that there's excess plastic to play with so you can adjust the pose slightly when you cut it flat.

Now, if you're a clever person you'll spot the little nub on the Visarch torso that helps locate his arm in a monopose and clip it off before you stick everything together. Because on occasion I am categorically not a clever person, I spotted that and thought 'ah well, I'll deal with that later'. Nearly pushed the recently-stuck and still malleable model apart trying to get it flat.

And stuck!

It's at this point that the whole pose of the model starts to come to me. He'll be pointing at something with his glaive, looking in that direction too. One of the things I know from my psychology degree regarding body-language is that when people are concentrating on something, their leading foot (or the foot closest) tends to point in that direction too. Otherwise the pose tends to elicit a little 'well that dude looks slightly awkward' thought in the back of people's heads without them realising it. So, the tree revenant foot had to rotate slightly.

Much better luckily you can be pretty rough with the clippers on the tree revenant foot as it's full of odd little ridges anyway. This takes a little more carving to flow if you're doing it on a smooth Eldar leg.

Left arm!

Cut down to fit into the Visarch socket (which is half an arm bonded to the cloak).

And done

Then to test the head I'd originally planned him having, which came up a little short.

So, better idea to reuse the idea from Thaegr the Son of Kurnous. Note how the hair piece I picked is also blowing the same way as the cloak.

Roughly cut the antlers off longer than you need them to be.

Taking a sliver off each time you cut, and starting well in advance of where the final cut needs to be, start cutting a little 45 degree angle into the antlers. The reason you're starting so far back is because getting the angles similar enough not to look wonky when you stick the horns on is a little tricky, and too much cutting can result in some short antlers...

Head in place. It's also a good idea to model with a cup of tea (or a beer or glass of wine ), as you need something to occupy yourself while the glue dries enough to keep the head still when you're posing the antlers.

First stab at getting the antlers in place.

Not so good. Looks more like insect mandibles than antlers. Cool, but not what I'm looking for. Because plastic's such a forgiving material to work with, they're easy to repose.

Much better!

Through this whole thing, I was never quite happy with the tabard. Either too much bulk or not enough. So, I clipped off some of the upper bits and stuck some little greebles from the Wood Elf Wild Rider kit on the bottom.

Little greebles like that are a godsend when you're converting. Things like Purity Seals for Imperial stuff, and various pouches and grenades can hide a multitude of sins in the 'gaps' department

Lastly, I didn't thing the model needed it particularly, but I'd been dying to use some of the gribblies from the Tree Lord kit, so it got sprinkeld with gribblies

And then, best bit about it, I've got all of these bits left over for other conversion jobs! Plus the masks and tabard too

That one was a bit more involved than the 4-armed Bloodbride, but I HQs give you the opportunity to really go the extra mile as you only have to do one dude and not 10 of them!

Hope that was helpful

Thanks dude! Glad you like him especially the fluff.

I was going for something that could be a potential progenitor to both the Haemonculi, Phoenix Lords/Exarchs and Ynnari soul-shenanigans. Some sort of basic soul-transference and containment process that if taken down three different branches of a tech tree could produce each of those different technomancies

I also quite like the duality that in his day Raodruin's Soul Drinker kin were reviled, yet in these strange and desperate times the Ynnari using basically the same process (stealing someone else's soul and using it for your own gain) are lauded as saviours

I do have some of the Yncarne together though and i'm really excited to share it when it's done enough to look like something

One thing i will note though. The Yncarne is definitely a she. Someone spent far too long sculpting her backside for it to be a bloke

Well that settles it. We must now demand artwork and an official model of Slaanesh so we can check out he/she/its booty to confirm once and for all if Slaanesh is male or female.

I agree though Ynnead, to me the Yncarne has always looked predominantly female, even without that booty I'd still believe it was designed to be female.

Damn! Two weeks of absence and I miss a lot of great stuff -.- This thread is so inspiring to me, I'm going to build a Ynnari army, or at least a group of conversions which refer to Ynnead in some way. There will be some soul/ghost stuff, can't wait to start xD Well, a lot of your ideas will be copied! For example your Sylandri...
But enough of my plans... I really like your low-budget Lelith conversion, thats very close to the original. The bio-tec arms are something new^^ Also the shardnet/impaler girl reminds me of Drazhar
The Visarch conversion is very cool. I like the actual model too much so there w'ont be any conversion.

Thanks man! I'm flattered! I'd love to see what you come up with everyone takes their own unique spin on things, even if they get the idea from somewhere else so it's always interesting to see

Oh, and speaking of that the Sylandri conversion is something I copied! RollingAwayTheStone came up with the idea and I think 2 or 3 of us instantly copied it!

You're right, she is a little Drazhar-like. Didn't plan it that way, but the arms are very fitting I really hope they make a plastic Drazhar (with new rules while they're at it!). He's such a kickass character he should be at least as killy (if not more) than the Phoenix Lords...

I really like the standard Visarch too. If I get some spare cash I'd happily buy him individually from a bits site and make him standard

As for updates...

I've exhausted my supply of procrastinating on adulting things and finished putting together my Yncarne

What a mission! Took enough brainpower working stuff out that I don't even have a coherent set of pics for a WIP process :S

Some highlights though:

1. Cutting off the right leg just above the knee to rotate it so it looks like she's walking forwards, but forget to hold the lower leg in place so it pings off into the aether. Spend 20 minutes tearing the room apart trying to find a bit it will cost £20 to replace, before realising that in a singular statement of solidarity it had ricocheted and landed in my bits box...
2. Spend 15 minutes reposing the right arm in various different ways because I wanted to make a right-handed scythe, but then decide that the sword looks cool so I'll keep that instead.
3. Spend 10 minutes carving a little half-teardrop (for the blank facemask) out of sprue because I'm a luddite when it comes to GS, and again forget to hold it in place so it pings off into that aether again. Spend 20 minutes tearing the room apart again to try and find this teeny tiny mote of plastic before saying 'sod this' and making another one.
4. Settling down for the long-haul holding this big ol' unbalanced model steady while the tiny little contact point between the foot and the base glues in place.

Not my most stress-free modelling experience! Definitely an exception though (don't want to put anyone off, I was massively ambitious with this...). Hope it was worth it!

Ynnead you are a conversion beast. Seriously this is way cooler than the base Yncarne model (and I like the base model) and it tells such a great story! It shows that otherworldly aspect of the Yncarne and has a visual representation of how she works to boot. The pose is also much more dynamic and shows her charging forward as opposed to just standing there. Seriously dude I can't overstate enough how cool this conversion is, I'm in awe. I can't wait to see it painted up in all its glory.

Haha thanks guys!

Yeah I like the base Yncarne model too, and I was half-tempted to just glue it together normally after rotating the leg, head and dropping the arm. That would be simple enough and still impart the idea of movement (although getting the hair to mate up might prove tricky).

Glad I pushed on though making the Guardian was worryingly enjoyable :S perhaps I should play Slaanesh daemons!

For paint schemes I could do with a bit of input actually. I'm going to try for a sort of ghostly ethereal look, with the base and Guardian being quite rich colours, whereas the Yncarne herself will be my standard Ushabti Bone over whatever the replacement for Snakebite Leather is called (drawing a blank on that one!). Then I'll pick out the runework with Runelord Brass which is nice and washed out.

The hair will probably be a lighter version of that, with maybe an extra step of Pallid Wych Flesh over the top.

What about the soulstuff though? Similar to the hair? Maybe with a reddish tint to it? Or should I just pick out the soulstones in red as a spot colour as red is very sparsely used on my Ynnari...

I like a heavy hand with the spot color for centerpiece models. Like in individual trooper might have one spot of red and a sea of brown, your HQ stands out in the same way from the ranks of troops.

You want them to match the palette enough to belong together, but stand out enough to show who’s in charge.

Nice work on the conversions, now slap that paint on!

Thanks guys i was actually thinking about adding another guardian dead on the floor. Someone mentioned that there was a lot of blank base so that could help fill it out.

Normally i'm with you on the spot colour front with HQs, but i dont think that'd fit the picture in my head of a ghostly apparition for the Yncarne.

I'm thinking that most of my models are done entirely in warm colours, so if i go a step above in brightness with a cool colour for the swirly stuff then that should stand it apart...

Shall do some testing

One thing I'd steer clear of is making the hair and ethereal stuff to similar in colour, they are both big flowing parts but they have very different sources and textures, it's a great opportunity for contrast. I'd do the swirling soul stuff in a cool blue or teal then perhaps a warmer colour for the hair? I'd try base white, apply a wash of watered down carroburg crimson then highlight with pallid wych flesh, it makes sense in my head but you'd have to do a bit of a test to see if it works out for you.

Hmmm, interesting. I've definitely come around to the idea of making the hair and ethereal stuff a different colour. I'd originally planned on having them pretty close but you've swayed me

Not so certain on the blue though. There isn't a speck of blue on any of my Eldar models, so it'd probably look out of place.

I do love the idea of making it a sort of washed-out red though. Rather than the hair in carroburg crimson with pallid wych flesh highlights I'll try the swirly stuff that way I had sort of an idea to do the internals around that big node of energy in her abdomen in a sort of dark red so it sort of looks a bit like internal organs of some sort. That'd fit nicely with a washed-out red for the swirly stuff

Also, a thought that's just occurred to me. I wonder if the Visarch's cloak/fur/feathers thing is a subtle nod to this kickass pic of a Corsair Prince:

Spoiler:

I wonder if anywhere is selling the Triumvirate models as individual bits? If I can get the torso and cloak of the Visarch I'm fairly certain I have various bits lying around to make something similar to that dude...

That piece is stunning. You took something that didn't have a lot of movement (even though it was meant to) and made it dynamic as heck. and that is impressive as can be.

Thanks guys you flatter me! All the bits and pieces are there on the original model, it's just hidden behind a boatload of swirly AoS gak (and a couple of odd stylistic posing decisions, like the Blue Peter 'and here's one I made earlier' rune in the right hand).

To be honest, you'd be 90% there with just three little changes that anyone can do.

1. Cut the leg off above the knee with a sharp knife (bread knife might work nicely as you can get a bit of a sawing motion going on). Spin it round 90 degrees towards her left and re-glue
2. Clip off the swirly gak below the arm, grip the arm at the shoulder and rotate the arm downwards (mine split the shoulder, but you can fill that up with GS or little plastic shavings and glue like I did because I'm a GS luddite).
3. Take your clippers and clip off the (her) left-hand corner of the neck stub along the length of the neck, which has the effect of rotating the head around so she's looking where she's pointing.

You might have some troubles with attaching the hair at that point, but a little GS might solve that neatly (or you might be lucky and the hair sort of falls into the right place).

Not as hard as it sounds just a little nerve-racking on a £20 model!

Only a little update today. Weekends are for car work (or, in this case, block laying) and I've put off one too many things to get away with another evening of 40k :S

This little guy I'd half put together ages ago as a sort of test for another Autarch model. However, there's a little face on the Yncarne swirly stuff that's its own little separate bit you glue into the rest of the swirl. I thought it was a kickass bit, but couldn't think what to do with it at the time.

Then, I read in passing that the reason Altansar Eldar never show their faces is because they all look like exquisitely preserved corpses (it was Ynnead that protected them during their time in the warp, and apparently that has side-effects). I think I've decided on the name 'Idravain', an Altansari Autarch that acts as a bodyguard for my Ynnari Prophet (who I've decided will be called Khal'Fhirin, which means 'Herald of Truth').

Couple of thoughts on this guy.

First off is the whole prophet/bodyguard thing. Thinking about how the Eldar in general feel about symbolism, it would make sense that once the Ynnari split off into the webway to spread the word of Ynnead (during the final Gathering Storm book apparently), each little cell might gravitate towards a prophet/bodyguard model as a leadership structure. So, this guy's the reckless beatstick to Fhirin's reason

Second, I felt slightly like the Eldar got a bit of a free pass with Ynnead bringing them back from the dead. There has to be a catch. This is the 40k universe we're talking about. Don't trust a Death God bearing gifts as the saying goes

So, I thought what about each time you're reborn you come back...changed...slightly. A little like the Stormcasts. Each time you come back, you come back as slightly less you. By the look of this guy's face (which being Altansari wasn't exactly easy on the eyes to begin with), you might even come back slightly more daemonic too...

Oh, and now the Ynnari are out in the open, he doesn't feel the need to hid his half-dead daemonic-looking face. In fact, the fact that he looks bl**dy terrifying comes in quite handy as a bodyguard...

Swapped over the tabard on Raodruin back to the Visarch one and I think it looks better brings the balance of Wood Elf to Eldar to a bit of a better place plus, the little face armour plate is more than a little Greene Man-esque so I like that

Also took the opportunity to do a bit of a Rogue's Gallery of my exodite HQs I must admit I'm chuffed to bits with these guys! They really look to me like some eldar that walked into some mysterious forest just after the Fall and have emerged twisted in ways that would thoroughly disconcert your average craftworlder

I've also started work on painting my Yncarne most of her actual body is done now. The only bit that's unpainted on the body is the node of energy in her midriff. Also close-ups!

I'm slightly unsure as to how to progress at this point actually. The base and the Guardian are pretty straight forwards, but I really don't know what I want from the swirly soulstuff. I was all set to paint it as a sort of washed-out red (not quite sure how yet), but seeing how ghostly the rest of her has turned out has kind of made me want to do it ghostly as well. Perhaps starting out a bright white where it exits the Guardian's soulstone and then working its way through to opacity the nearer it gets to the Yncarne.

I feel like with the standard model you have to paint the swirly stuff differently as there's so much of it she'll get lost in the middle if she's all the same colour, but mine uses maybe a fifth of the stuff you get in the box, and considering she's physically made of the stuff it would make sense to have her the same shade...

What do you think?

Really like Idravain. Between the back banner and his demonic visages he comes across as very samurai in nature. The Yncarne is coming along pretty sweet, too. Using the primary colors in the energy swirl will really drive home that she is powered by or coalescing from it.

Very nice work Ynnead. Glad to see some paint on the Yncarne as well. I don't think I noticed before but is the face different from the normal one she has? It looks very skull-like in the close-ups.

Thanks guys I'm glad you like them.

You're right youwashock Idravain does look Samurai-like, which is fitting as well as a loyal semi-fanatical bodyguard character

Glad you guys like how the Yncarne's coming along too and yeah I did carve the right-hand side of the face to look a little more skull-like. Not actually too difficult really as it's mostly there already. All I did was use a drawing pin to poke out the eye socket, clip off the nose and do the same with that (if I was leaving the living side of the face in tact I'l leave the nose be).

Thanks man! Glad you like them especially the Altansari dude.

I've actually done a little more on the Yncarne today. Alas I'm apparently incapable of painting something that's not sepia! I tried a ton of test bits of spare swirly stuff and couldn't get the sort of washed-out red look I was thinking of.

So, here's what I ended up with

Just thinking about it, what I've actually done is faded from quite a bright white at the Soulstone through to the sepia of the body colour (not sure how well the pics show that, or how well I've done it to be honest!). I suppose I could use that as pre-shading for a really light red wash of some sort. I'll do some test pieces

The other option is to continue the dark red wash I've done on the inner holes of the energy (which looks more prominent in real life) all around each contour so it sort of looks like it's backlit in red.

Great project blog, the hunters really stick out for me. The Glade Guard/Kalabite/Guardian combo makes for perfect Exodites. I've always been a fan of focusing on the basic infantry in an army and giving them as much character as possible, and that shows here

I was thinking about your Yncarne, perhaps you can paint it differently from the other units and have it really stand out! It might be wildly outside of your comfort zone, but how about instead of a washed out red, you make the soul energy a really vivid red? You could go to town adding layers from the deepest crimson to almost white. I was looking for examples on Google, and I found this...

Thanks man!

Yeah the hunters are some of my favourites too it took me a little while to get something that felt right for them but I think I struck on something that works nicely I'm actually thinking about going back to my Guardian counts-as and re-doing them in that style too, although the Kabalite and Guardian torsos are a good visual distinction.

Ooh a vivid red would look cool I definitely like that sword. I'm wondering how to do that based on the existing paint scheme.

Perhaps if I make myself a really thinned down red wash then I can apply it selectively layer-by-layer to go from a bright red (showing the white underneath) down to a really deep red like I've washed into the recesses.

Shall do some test pieces

Well! In the absence of a red wash on the swirly stuff the Yncarne is done!

In addition to the basing and such, I've added a lot of light to the swirly stuff. I've also done edge-highlights in gloss which has worked really nicely (but doesn't come across in pictures). Basically it reflects light on the very tips making them appear even brighter than the white

The last pic really gets across what I wanted from it actually. Like a ghostly apparition

Thanks man always glad you like my stuff!

I've got a bit of a thing that usually runs around my head that the Eldar are just as ignorant as the Imperium compared to their forebears (pre-Fall and DAoT respectively). They've gone through just as apocalyptic destruction of their civilisation as the IoM. Plus, so much of their history appears to be based in myth which is a thoroughly unreliable way of recording data.

So, it makes sense that most Eldar really don't know what the feth's going on with all this warp-spawned gods of death and creepy prophets with bizarre powers

One of the things in the recent fluff I use to justify that ignorance is what happened with Yriel and the Spear of Twilight.

Iyanden had held that the spear is cursed, and drains the life-essence of the wielder until they're a husk. However, Yvraine showed that if you stab yourself with it after you die you get all of those years back and it brings you back to life.

So, what if the Spear of Twilight is more like a pre-Fall life-essence storage device that actually protects you from death on the battlefield by storing some of your life essence so you can be brought back if you die. Plus, seeing as you can reincarnate losing out life in this lifetime wouldn't be such a problem (but losing your battlefield experience might be).

However, modern Eldar lost the 'stab yourself afterwards' bit to the sands of time so they just think it's some horribly cursed device that slowly kills you...

A while ago I sort of had the idea that it would be a neat idea to do various animalistic-themed things for my exodite HQs. I've got my Stag-like Thaegr and Raodruin, and my avian Myrdolaith.

This guy started off as another Stag-like thing, but evolved into something slightly more Pantherinae.

Meet Sardroath, Beastborn, Sunstalker, Son of Kurnous. Counts-as Jetbike Autarch with Laser Lance.

The exodite worlds of Selesti are populated by many clans and tribes, all under the gaze of Raodruin the High Lord of Selesti. Many tribes perished when Nurgle reigned over their lands, and those that survived were changed irreparably. Each were afflicted with differing conditions as the whims of the Plaguefather manifested over their lands, and each of these afflictions has had a marked effect on their culture.

The Selestini of the Godwoods were protected from direct manifestation by the gnarled boughs of naturally occurring wraithbone that populate their forest. However, they were continually assaulted by legions of plaguebearers, and launched ambushes from their protected glades in response. Their warriors have long learnt the value of stealth and infiltration, as well as the protective power of the adherants of the Cult of Morai Heg.

The Selestini of the Sandspires fled upwards into the mountainous spires of sandstone that riddle their lands. The Blightlord sent his Plague Drones to harvest them, to which they responded with great flocks of feathered warriors to meet them in aerial combat. Over the years, reverence of these ancient aerial combatants has become more and more ingrained into the Sandspires culture. Avian modifications are widespread in the warriors of the Sandspires.

The Selestini of the Dreaming Wastes felt the fertile plains of their lands turn to corrosive acid beneath their very feet. Those who survived were forced to replace their legs with durable wraithbone in order to wade through the acidic swamps to take the battle to the enemy. Over time, these modifications became more and more extreme as they diverged from standard Eldar physiology. In the present day, warriors of the Dreaming Wastes ritually replace their lower limbs with great 4-legged constructs that afford them phenomenal speed and toughness.

---------------------------------------------

I've wanted to do a creepy skeletal-like alien exodite centaur for a while now finally got the pieces to do it it's a mishmash of three Spite Revenants (legs mainly, although the torso flipped on its side formed the basis of the front part of the centaur legs), and some Kurnoth Hunter shoulder pads.

Thinking about the mechanics of how it'd walk is really neat. With such big claws on the front hands it'd have to knuckle-walk like a gorilla at low speeds, but would change at speed to something more feline nice and alien and weird

The inspiration for this came from a quote from the ever-excellent https://ironsleet.com/ and this utterly spectaculr model:

I'm paraphrasing here, but the accompanying fluff stated 'cut off for 10,000 years...just how far from human would a Tech Priest go' which is something that's really stuck in my mind

I'd love to take that idea further with Eldar, but for now this dude is my effort so far!

The dysjunction sent colossal tremours through the very bedrock of Commorragh. Towers crumbled as ripples cascaded through reality. Gaping tooth-lined chasms opened up beneath the ground, spewing forth great legions of daemons into the stricken city. Even Ynneadlidh, far far beneath the beseiged streets was in danger. Gnawing gnashing eyeless daemons flooded its pitch-black tunnels, skittering out from the cracks in the fabric of the realm. The haemonculi were no strangers to military forays, but never before in their history had they come close to anything approaching mobilisation.

Vast legions of wracks poured forth into the tunnels, their odd sidling gait belying the surgical precision with which they fought. Hulking beasts of foreign flesh rampaged through the myriad winding corridors, but still the daemonic horde pressed onwards. For the first time in milennia, the twisted denizens of low Commorragh felt the prickle of fear on the back of their necks. Half-formed experiments were unleashed, some wildly effective, others disappointingly incapable.

Malkarta hurriedly adjusted the final few synaptic bridges on her latest prototypes, their forms motionless aside from the steady undulation of their breathing. She nodded to the wych-clone beside her, who hesitated slightly before walking forth into the beast's embrace. Heavy muscles clamped tightly around her skull, and sinuous neural needles pierced the back of her neck painfully, worming their way into her motor cortices. Sharply, her senses bloomed across the creature, overlaying its primitive standby consciousness. She tested a brief arm movement and the creature mirrored it, a slight twitchiness marring the otherwise perfect maneuver. "Good enough," Malkarta barked, "hub-bound tunnel 8. Now.". The deep thrum of the fearsome creature's anti-grav mechanisms burst into life and the pair stalked out through the subterranean depths.

I've been wanting to do one of these for aaages ever since I saw this utterly stunning conversion that I've shamelessly cribbed

If I'm perfectly honest, I prefer the other guy's one but Wraith tails are pretty hard to come by :S still happy though!

Thanks guys! Steal away I've got a how-to coming for the Talos actually which I'll post up as soon as it's written

Til then, here's the latest creation Morrathillian has become Morrathillienn

Morrathillienn of the House of Ulthanash, Reaper of the Outer Dark, Prince of the Khaine's Ravens.

I've been growing a little dissatisfied with my Corsair Prince model for a little while now. You only get one Corsair Prince, and the whole concept of an Eldar that's managed to forge a minor empire outside of the protection of a Craftworld or Commorragh is just an opportunity to make a really characterful model

I'd been content to leave it on the back burner until I saw this stunning model of an INQ28 Shipmaster finally sparked some inspiration

Looking at that model it struck me just how...Kabalite...Greyfax's torso looks. Plus, I finally had something to do with the Yvraine bits I had from the Triumvirate add in some Scourge wings, a Wrack pilot arm (nice and psyker-y, and also with enhanced musculature to explain S4) and a whole lot of cutting and reposing and hey presto!

There's a couple of little things I've noticed I need to touch up from these pics. First is the little skull on her collar needs to become a soulstone, and I've been wondering about adding Greyfax's skull pauldron thing...

Mmmh I don't know whether I like her or not... The conversion is great, well done! This is Yvraine's head with some feathers of scourges, right? This love for details is perfect for conversions, so the whole style fits very good to a corsairs princess.

What I don't like are the 'bulky' legs. In my opinion they don't mesh with the skinny rest of an eldar body. This reminds me of the pin-up style like KD uses.

Nevertheless I think I like her more than I dislike her xD Good job so far, I'm corious how she looks painted^^

Thanks guys! I'm really proud of this one

I see what you mean about the slightly bulkier legs. I think they're meant to scale with a torso that has pauldrons while still looking slightly feminine.

I've added on the skull pauldron just on the one side and it does help to balance the torso a little better (while still keeping it looking eldar-slim).

I'm hoping the paint will take it the rest of the way as the undersuit will be black (with gold trim) so visually will appear less bulky, while the breastplate will likely be gold which will give it more visual bulk.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Similar to Morrathillienn, I've been slightly dissatisfied with my Ynnari Autarch Idravain. I like the model, but it doesn't quite live up to the creepiness potential for Ynnari. So, I had another go at him...

In his wraithbone palace, the dead god waits dreaming - Khalfhirin, Prophet of Ynnead

Idravain thought back on the muddled centuries of his life. Way back when he was first alive, he recalled having been born amidst the terrible 500-year descent as Altansar was inexorably pulled into the depths of the Eye. His early life was a desperate and futile struggle against the colossal psychic gravity well dragging them under. Mere moments after they were submerged, the assault began. Valiantly they fought, but the craftworld was swiftly reduced to lifelessness. Idravain had died there, among his kin. Aimlessly, the hulk drifted through that warped and twisted realm, and for millennia nothing stirred on the dead craftworld.

With bleary eyes, Idravain had woken. Unsteadily, he had pulled himself to his feet. Many of his kin had already risen. Approaching them he finally saw the horror of their visages. They may have been walking confused as living Eldar would, but they looked like revenants. Their mortal wounds had been restitched, but incompletely. Limbs were functional, but bones exposed themselves through torn flesh and pallid skin. It was only through the dreaming of their seers that they discovered what had occurred.

The nascent God of Death had cast a thinning veil over the craftworld, resurrecting its fallen people. However, as yet unborn her powers were incomplete. The Altansari were resurrected in soul, but not in body. In this risen state, they cowered behind the veil for centuries, or perhaps millennia, it was hard to tell. Time ebbs and flows like tides in the warp. They cowered there until their salvation came. Maugan Ra, son of Altansar, struck deep into the Eye and found his people. Blazing with soulfire, he led them back to the materium.

Until the birth of Ynnead, Idravain had cowered still. Like the rest of his kin, he feared greatly how the still-living Eldar would react to their condition. Now though, he wore his condition as a mark of pride. Many times he had fallen as he fought for Yvraine. Each time he had risen again. Each time a little less living. He saw these defects as a blessing from Ynnead, a clear sign of her favour. He bore them with honour, for all to see. He was chosen by Ynnead, and would fight until his purpose, whatever that might be, was complete.

The Eldar are a people for whom symbolism is not merely important, but an inescapable fact of life. Yvraine, first of her kind, Emissary of Ynnead, was accompanied on her quest at every step by the mighty Visarch. As the Ynnari set out to spread their faith among the stars, many cells found themselves gravitating to a similar model of prophet and guardian.

Both Daughter of Khaine conversions (which thinking about it I need to re-do actually) use heads from the Dark Elf Sisters of Slaughter, attached to cut-off Scourge necks to fit to the DEldar torsos, and the swords for the Cult of Kurnous are from the Harlequin Troupe kit they fit quite neatly with the DEldar torsos as they're both flat mating surfaces (and also fit well enough on Guardian/Dire Avenger torsos as the flat part sits around the edge of the shoulder socket).

I've got an update too!

I had meant to get some painting done for the painting contest, but I had a bit of inspiration for something I've wanted to do for a while back in January I made my first Croneworld Eldar pleasure cultist, which I did rather like.

However, in the light of my exodites getting a little...stranger...since then, I thought that the warped playthings of Slaanesh should by all rights be just as strange. So, here's my first two attempts (counts-as Heralds of Slaanesh with Etherblades).

Ylris sprinted across the battlefield in great leaps and bounds, ribbons billowing gracefully behind her. Desperately, she fought to keep her death-dance pitch-perfect. Every leap and footfall the very epitome of acrobatic grace. She could feel the eyes of the Prince of Perfection as a great pressure on the back of her soul, scrutinising her every move for a hint of anything out of place. On her next landing, she clipped a stone and stumbled. "No!" she screamed. A scream cut short as her soul was wrenched from her frame and returned to its eternal torment, her lifeless body slumping to the floor. Around her, her kin continued their dance unflinching, utterly absorbed in their own survival. Elsewhere, another fallen warrior rose to its feet, home to another long-dead soul plucked from the aether. Perhaps this plaything would do better, an infintessimal fraction of the vast rumbling thought processes of Slaanesh mused. This was a frightfully entertaining game!

Such is the life of a Croneworld Cultist. Cursed by their forebears, who in their arrogance thought they could birth a God in their image. Little did they know the soul-child of their race had far more sordid ambitions. They live a fraught existence as playthings for She-Who-Thirsts, yet still they endure. These cursed creatures. Desperate to avoid her attentions, and equally desperate to please her, their lives are utterly at the mercy of the most fickle of Gods.

A little refresher on the background

Spoiler:
I've thought a reasonable amount about Chaos Eldar, coming to the conclusion that the idea of 'Eldar that just decided to worship Chaos' and 'Eldar who were corrupted by Chaos' don't quite cut the mustard fluff-wise to me. However, I'm of the opinion that you can do whatever it is you please with bending 40k fluff so long as you have a good enough reason for it, and twisted chaotic Eldar is too good of an opportunity to pass up.

I quite like the idea of Eldar who dedicated themselves to another Chaos God to try and get their protection from Slaanesh. That's got just the right nuance of desperation to it for me to like it as a piece of fluff. I can just imagine a desperate Corsair or Outcast coming to the end of their life selling their soul to one of the other gods in a desperate (and probably futile) bid to avoid being devoured. Furthermore, I can imagine one of the other Gods flaunting the fact they own an Eldar soul, demonstrating that victory over Slaanesh. It's definitely something I want to explore in the future, but for these guys I had another idea

My other idea is that Slaanesh strikes me as the sort of entity that plays with her food. Contained within her, she has billions upon billions of Eldar souls which i expect she could resurrect and toy with as she pleases, in any form she wished, before consuming them again. These Eldar wouldn't truly be alive in the conventional manner, but also wouldn't be like resurrected phantoms. As the Eldar soul retains consciousness after death, they'd not only remember who they were, but they'd also remember the centuries upon centuries of torture within the belly of Slaanesh. I imagine them as somewhat like conscious living Eldar whose souls are bound to the whims of Slaanesh.

I'd imagine the figureheads of the pleasure cults would revel in this existence, and be looked upon favourably (Favoured Playthings I've called them). For the rest of the population caught up in the cataclysm their souls would be stuck in perpetual torture, and being resurrected as a plaything would be a desperate window in the endless torment. Also, with billions of potential souls to choose from you can bet that Slaanesh would pick up on anything that displeases her, no matter how small, and replace you with another potential candidate. So, you'd get a society constructed of Eldar desperate to please Slaanesh in any way possible borne of a desperate self-centred desire to avoid being returned to torment. They're normal Eldar, reduced to committing horrific acts by the trap they find themselves in. One of my favourite types of villain plus, there's tons of potential for things like Learned Helplessness and Stockholm Syndrome to make interesting characters with

The other thing I'm excited about is the modelling opportunities

One of my all-time favourite GW models is this old-school Vampire Lord. It's just a fantastic sculpt:

So, I thought I'd have a go myself with my second Favoured Plaything/Herald.

What do you reckon? I'm dead chuffed if I do say so myself here are the two together:

These two combined have also given me some ideas for some themes to carry through to the rest of my Croneworlders. Judging by the Keeper of Secrets model, Slaanesh seems to have a fondness for extra arms. My DEldar Covens Wych Cult also has a bit of a multiple-arms theme going on, which fits the 'Slaanesh is a reflection of the Eldar consciousness' thing, but means that I need to mix things up a little for the Croneworlders. The vampire lord guy is what gave me the answer with his odd arms. As a rule, people tend to find symmetry pleasing, and asymmetry slightly odd (or downright jarring when it comes to the human form). So, I think one of the themes I'm going to carry through the rest of my Croneworlders is them having 3 arms to hit the warped odd look of Chaos

More to come!

Thanks a million guys

I thought they'd be useful for your Slaanesh Cult Ember

The transitions are slightly more visible from the back, but I've discovered the wonders of liquid GS for covering up join-lines. It really is marvelous stuff

Yeah the 4-armed lass is mostly Witch Elf bits. It's a great (if massively overpriced) kit. Not particularly kitbash-friendly as the bodies have mating surfaces matched to specific sets of arms, but when it comes to dynamic female torsos there's nothing better it's only the head and sword (Spite Revenant) that aren't from that kit.

I'm flattered you like my bat-winged guy so much I thought he was at best a ropey copy, despite how much I like him myself

Oh, any clever ideas for painting the skintones? I was thinking of aiming somewhere inbetween regular eldar skin and the grey/purple of daemonette hide (maybe veering slightly more towards the grey end).

Base of daemonette hide, pallid wych flesh highlights and then a selective wash with druchii purple and perhaps carroberg crimson to add a dash of red/flesh tone to it?

It's been a while since an update, but I have been busy! Busy with paints to boot finished my 5 multi-limbed Bloodbrides

What's more Dark Eldar than a thigh-high boot made of someone else' skin?

Not only that, but I've painted my bio-suit Talos too I must admit, I'm damn proud of this one...

And the whole gang together

Now, I had promised myself no more modelling until I'd got some stuff painted, but what really happened was I made a load of things but didn't post them until I'd finished painting, which worked in some way I suppose

In my defence, the idea I had was 'famine slender-man-style Nurgle-corrupted Eldar' which was just too cool to wait for

My thinking was that pretty much all of the Nurgle bloated plague stuff I've seen has been human. What if Chaos corruption has different effects on different life-forms? Here's what I came up with:

Malariel, Herald of Nurgle

Plague can have many effects. In Eldar, their limbs elongate as their frame becomes more and more emaciated. However, their slight frames belie an unnatural toughness.

The fluff behind Malariel is that he was a Corsair, who in desperation upon his death sold his soul to Nurgle. Normally, such triflings are Slaanesh's concern. More trouble than they're worth. However, the Plaguefather covets the worlds of Selesti, and Malariel is a tool with which to sunder the veil in the sector and reclaim his lordship over these worlds. Plus, given the rivalry between the Chaos Gods it's a bit of a taunt on Nurgle's part.

Malariel himself is convinced that the salvation of the Eldar is through the benevolence of the Blightlord. He himself was saved from eternal torment at the hands of Slaanesh, and has set out to bring this revelation to his fellow Eldar. Never mind the pretender Ynnead. Nurgle is the true God of Rebirth.

Here's the first of his converts

I also quite liked the idea of having his congregation be multi-species. There's something very 40k about the only creature calling for racial tolerance being the quasi-daemonic herald of the God of Pestilence so, I had a go at a Blightking-based Astartes

And finally the beginnings of Malariel's congregation

Ynnead this update was well worth the wait! Those bloodbrides are absolutely gorgeous all painted up, I love the design of them and they look absolutely terrifying. Such a great concept and excellent execution. That talos is super imposing, the extra height really makes it feels like it'd tower over it's foes before lunging down to tear into them, very nicely done.

The Blightdar (that's what I'm calling them now) are a really neat concept, you really nailed the long frail famished vibe with them. They look like they'd be right at home in an Inquisitor game. The astartes one looks like an absolute brute.

Ooh Blightdar I like that

Thanks man! I'm glad it was worth the wait

I was trying to think of what colours to paint the Blightdar in as they'll be a step outside of my usual comfort zone of browns and reds I've got various washes to dirty them up with, but I'm not certain where to start from.

Greying skin with greenish washes mixed with ruddy-browns? What about the armour? I don't quite know what wraithbone would look like as it decays...

I'd do some research on nurgle themed armies, particularly fantasy nurgle chaos warriors, those should be a great source of inspiration for colours. As for decaying wraithbone I'd imagine it'd get kinda splotchy or streaky with dark ruddy brown marks. I'd think seraphim sepia would be a good place to start experimenting with it.

"What's more Dark Eldar than a thigh-high boot made of someone else' skin?" absolutely nothing

This is a great update! So much to love here.

I really love your Blightdar, particularly the idea that this is a way to be saved from She Who Thirsts. It might not be an especially pleasant or aesthetically pleasing way, but it is foolproof.

"Greying skin with greenish washes mixed with ruddy-browns?" - sounds good to me. Not sure how you'd do it, but that sounds good.

"I don't quite know what wraithbone would look like as it decays..." Dirty browns with reddish undertones, I think. The Google Image search isn't for the squeamish but it gives you a solid idea.

Alternatively, emphasis the unnatural rebirth aspect - make it extra, horribly pale, give it some fungal-looking regrowths. I saw a fungal-themed Nurgle army around somewhere, which has the kind of thing I mean. Might be too close to your Exodite cyberbone look, though.

I've really gotta get cracking on my own project. Stupid masters.

Thanks a billion guys! It's encouragement like this that keeps my mind chuntering away on new ideas

@I_F Good ideas I don't have any Seraphim Sepia but it's about time I picked some up. I've got some Reikland Fleshade, but I could do with something a little lighter. Good idea for looking at fantasy Nurgle stuff for inspiration too

@Goblinpaladin Yeah I like the idea that there are multiple ways of saving yourself from Slaanesh...but none of them are necessarily much better than the alternative Saying that, it's not necessarily foolproof. Saving an Eldar soul would be a PITA for a Chaos God as they're Slaanesh's property. Malariel's been saved for a specific purpose. Who's to say what will happen to him and his flock if he achieves his purpose. It's foolproof...provided you're useful

I'm also of the opinion that Ynnead's not necessarily a better option either. Selling your soul to a Warp-God of Death doesn't sound like the wisest decision either basically the Eldar are pretty screwed wherever they go...

@ph34r The Ynnari prophet? If you've only seen the pic with his guardian Idravain then there's some more here

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/270/702683.page#9206281

If you've seen those I'll have to get some more!

@Gummy Unsettling is what I was going for If only I could think of a way to make standard Craftworlders unsettling as well I'd have got everything!

The fluff's there if you put the right angle on it to point out how alien they are. Some of the older artwork captures it too, this one being a particular favourite:

Now if only I could think how to capture that in a model...

VC Banshee, maybe? With a farseer head?

Like this

Thats the best photo editing I can do, sorry, but I think it shows some potential. You'd just need to replace the torso with something more eldary, maybe just use a guardian torso.
If you decide not to do it I'm stealing it back.

Ooh great call! I like the idea of a Banshee-based Farseer. I'll see what I can come up with

I've had a crack at painting him but I'm really not happy with it. Went for a Biel Tan style white armour which I'm not sold on so I'll have another go at him

The one thing that did work though is I decided on sort of an osteoporosis-style decay for Wraithbone, although I like the idea of looking at teeth for inspiration

That and I've just remembered I've got a pot of Martian Ironearth that I really want to test...

Thanks man yeah this is the first model where I'm actually happy with how the eyes have turned out

I think the trick was using Pallid Wych Flesh for the whites rather than Corax White. I've actually found it does a better job of white than actual white for a lot of things...

The more I learn about painting the more I find that pure white paint is not necessary. Very few things in the world are solid hard white (shine being one of the few exceptions) and so using off-whites seems to be much more useful more often.

Hmm, you're right about the banshee arm. Even some little bangles on the wrist would break it up a bit.

Actually, i could do with some opinions i've finished painting my first Croneworlder, but i'm conflicted about basing. Here he is:

Now i know what would look best for the colours of this model in particular is your usual dark grey stone/datkened metallic ibdustrial sort of thing most 40k models get.

However, one of the main things i've been doing is basing all of my models on the same deserty sandy bases so they all look at home when i come to build scenery. Plus, the narrative they're all in centres around the worlds of Selesti which are all former Eldar Maiden Worlds, ravaged by Nurgle post-Fall so they're all desertified. It's an oddity of the sector that all habitable planets are desert worlds.

What i've done with my Blightdar (sneak peak of thise behind!) is paint them roughly in the same tan colours, but also make it so that where they tread is a little pool of greenish water which helps tie everything together.

I suppose with these guys i could have their presence stain the ground where they tread purple, and the contrast with the tan sand would help the unnatural look, but do you think it would look ok?

First of all, he looks ace dude, good job. As for the basing if I haven't screwed up my lore too bad are crone worlds not where the Eldar collect the gems they use for soul stones? Perhaps make some small coloured crystals for the base to signify its nature as a crone world? Apart from that I do like the idea of using a purple wash to add colour to the base and I think that'd look nice.

Thanks man! That pic isn't actually the greatest as the sunlight has whited out his skintone quite badly. I must say I'm dead pleased with him

Yeah you're bang on with the Croneworlds being where the Eldar get their soulstones from, and adding a couple of little gems onto the base would be a great idea

The issue I had was that if I wanted to tie them into the rest of my Eldar (and human) warbands fighting over this particular bit of space they'd need bases that both fit in with the rest of the desert look, but also look good with a purple/grey palette.

Ooh, how's this for an idea? Where these corrupted Eldar tread the ground is stained a dark unnatural purple, but also sprouts glass-like crystal? I could chop up some excess flying stands and stain them with purple wash to make them translucent

Thanks dude! Obviously, I absolutely love space elves but I definitely agree that a lot of their incarnations are a bit too close to 'good guy'. Especially in their recent fluff with how many times they've teamed up wit their Imperium superfriends to beat those dastardly Chaos baddies.

If they'd just play up some more of the grimdarkness I'd be really happy just make it absolutely clear just how alien the Eldar are. For reference, we're more closely related to giant sequoias and the ebola virus than we are to the Eldar.

Less superfriends. More psychopathic aliens who treat humanity as a tool to be wielded for their own benefit.

Few among the Craftworlds truly believe that there are Eldar still living in the Eye. Only in the babbling of the deranged and the rhetoric of doomsayers are the twisted playthings of She Who Thirsts mentioned with any kind of certainty.

Yet, here they stand, staining our world beneath their cursed feet.

"Curious, is it not, that where they tread crystals sprout from the ground. Crystals of the same design as those that form our soulstones. Are these eldar trapped beneath The Great Enemy's gaze subtly rebelling against their master, providing us with the means to escape Her grasp. Or, more worryingly, is this all part of Her plan? Are the soulstones we covet so highly our salvation, or a trap?" - Illythian the Doomsayer, Outcast of Ulthwe

I've also finished modelling my next two Croneworlders

I've fallen in love a little with how the whole colour scheme looks contrasting the pallid purpley skin with the deep right purple Eldar undersuit and the grey of the armour plates in typical Eldar-style block colour. It looks Slaaneshi, but unmistakably Eldar for these two, I've tried to keep a similar hint of Craftworld Eldar in the modelling to keep that connection, and it's actually got me rethinking Ylris (much though I love her design). I can't help but feel that she needs some Craftworld parts to make her unmistakeably Eldar too. Any ideas?

I like the mutated guy on the left. The grotesque claw and the archaic shield design work well together. Especially paired with the weird asymmetry of the $gender_unspecified with the whips on the right.

They'll look good paired together, and show off how the gods' blessings come from the same source but are never the same. sort of thing

I'd say a Treelord would make an excellent Avatar (it's face and mouth in particular are very Avatar-like). It doesn't scale with the old metal Avatar, but it fits pretty well with the FW Avatar which I always thought was a better size. Plus, it's a distraction carnifex so the bigger the better

I think Kurnoth Hunters scale pretty nicely with Wraithguard. I know I've seen an excellent kitbash between the two

Ooh nice! Looking forward to that

One of the things I like about Croneworlders is you can make them as evil as you like (or, rather, as opposed to other Eldar as you like).

They can be twisted playthings of Slaanesh who do her bidding as a sort of learned helplessness/stockholm syndrome thing like mine, or still (relatively) sane Eldar desperately hiding and trying to survive in the eye

You should definitely have a go they're really fun to make

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Static grass finally arrived!

The twisted herald moved its head ponderously side-to-side as it surveyed the ruined battlefield ahead, its tattered antlers lending inertia to its movements. Ragged were its breaths as it tasted the metallic tang of blood in the air. Its interest piqued by a scent lingering in the air it strode languidly through the corpses. Despite its mutations, it had lost none of the grace with which the Eldar are blessed. A characteristic thrown into sharp relief by the discordant metallic scrape of its blade dragging across the flagstones.

Reaching its quarry, it unfurled an elongated forearm towards the wounded Guardian below, caressing its spattered cheek. "You are not long for this world," the herald spoke, it's voice a deathbed whisper, so hoarse it was barely audible. "This need not be the end, my child. Come. Be with Mother Isha. She waits for you."

First attempt at weathering what do you think? I tried for a sort of osteoporosis style gradual decay of his wraithbone armour.

Heorulf, Astartes of the Death Guard is done too

Part of the background for him is that he's a first generation Terran-born Marine. As the Dusk Raiders were initially recruited from 'the warlike clans of Old Albia', so I figured it'd be fitting to give him an Anglo-Saxon name

I am slightly regretting doing the tentacles in red rather than green. I've done enough red on my other models, and green just feels more Nurgly. Too scared to do it though as with the thick gloss layer I'd probably lose all the detail repainting. Does the red look out of place?

The other thing I tried to do was paint his armour in the same scheme as the pre-Heresy Death Guard, but all beaten up, decayed and mutated. It never quite made sense to me for the Traitor Legions to flee to the eye, and then decide to spend their first days lovingly repainting their armour. Especially the Death Guard. Have a similar idea for a World Eater working on the bit of fluff that they never repainted their armour, they just haven't cleaned off the layers of dried blood

Lastly, I've got a bit of headcanon that the Chaos Gods didn't really just pop into existence in the form they are now. More that they were pre-existing unaligned or benevolent warp deities who were warped and twisted by the horrors and suffering unleashed during the descent of the 40k universe from 'tolerable' to 'grimdark'.

I reckon Nurgle began life as a fertility god. A god of the harvest. A god of the spring solstice and renewal following winter. Over the millennia, the horrific acts of the races of the early history of the 40k galaxy twisted him into the plagued nightmare he is today. However, little hints still show through of his origins. Wherever he touches the materium, life blossoms. Sure it's horrific and diseased, but it's life nonetheless. That's why the Blightdar have got little wells of foetid water welling up from beneath their feet, and the grass where that water touches is beginning to green again.

As part of a wider plot point, the desert worlds of Selesti where all of my Eldar (and my Knight Worlders and other dudes) are situated used to be verdant worlds. They were invaded by Nurgle and their ecologies irrevocably changed by his presence. Nurgle was eventually driven from the sector after much bloodshed, leaving desert worlds where life barely clung onto existence in his wake. However, the point being that it wasn't Nurgle's presence that caused the ecological collapse, but his absence. He's a fertility god. By driving him away, the lands fell into barren desert.

Little musings to keep me amused at work at any rate shot of the two together for anyone who made it through that particular ramble!

@I_F Nope! Completely passed me by. I'm just waiting for the Slaanesh focus to roll around, although by then I'll probably have just finished an Emperor's Children truescale dude...

@EDC Thanks man! I'm enjoying doing things with some more unnatural-looking skintones, and having a go at different sorts of washes to give skin different hues. It's quite interesting how some of them interact with each other actually, especially things like greens and purples. Greens seem to make skin more alien and sickly, and then purple brings it back to looking a bit more human.

Very interesting...

The blightdar look amazing. The decaying wraithbone armour came out really well, and so did the fallen marine's tentacles. (Red is fine; looks great. Not everything has to be green.)

Thanks dude!

I suppose it could just be my innate desire to have pretty much everything only one shade of colour away from the rest of the model not sure why, but I always feel my models look weird if that's not the case. I'm fine with other people's models having higher contrast :S

It was these guys that sort of influenced the red on him. (spoilered as I'm at work an it'll flash up on my screen, so I might get questions it'd take a long time to explain).

Spoiler:

Perhaps I should make a bit of a theme of having splashes of red in the rest of the warband. Not sure why, but the name for another dude has popped into my head as 'The Bloodworm', which is nicely evocative now I just need to think of a model to fit the name

Nurgle marine looks awesome. The red works just fine, especially as a throw-back to the Realm of Chaos days. The osteopored armor also looks quite cool.

Thanks a ton guys! I'm really glad you all like the osteopored Wraithbone. It took me two attempts to get it right so I tried my hand at stripping with Dettol. Works really really nicely, and no damage whatsoever to the model it does melt liquid greenstuff though, so careful of that.

Yeah I like the idea that the Chaos Gods are intrinsically linked to both the physical universe, and the psyche of the races that inhabit it. The Emperor's plan to cut humanity off from them is sort of the equivalent of a lobotomy. Yes you'll be free of their influence, but their influence is part of how the universe functions. Take that away and you're taking out a vital cog in the machine, with unforseen effects rippling out.

It also paints the Emperor as potentially working against the interests of what humanity would want, which I find very interesting. He's willing to strip humanity of its honour (Khorne), compassion (Slaanesh), thirst for knowledge (Tzeentch) and kindness (Nurgle) just in order to secure humanity's freedom. That in itself is a neat little comparison with the (usually American) assertion that Freedom (capital F) is the most valuable thing in the universe, and people should be willing to sacrifice anything to ensure you are Free. Would you trade your soul for Freedom? Or, more interestingly given that it's freedom from tyranny you're fighting for, would you let a tyrant sell your soul for you to secure your freedom from other tyrants?

It sort of fits the 'everything is awful' trope of the 40k universe that the best you can possibly achieve as a mortal is the freedom to choose which tyrant to die for

Man. I would get burnt as a heretic so fast

Thanks a ton guys! Really glad they're looking properly sinister. Might have to turn up the grimdark on my DEldar in that case!

@craggy go for it it's a really cool aesthetic. Looking forward to what you come up with for it

I know I've seen an excellent kitbash between the two

the busted open mouth and the claw hand (get some "blood" on it) are what appealed to me. I think I'll go with it, thanks for the encouragement.
Am thinking Revenants for Mandrakes.
Been looking at a lot of the AOS Elfen stuff, because it's mostly plastic and damn do I dislike trying to work with metal or resin. I unearthed my old Dark Eldar stuff, so have 20 warriors, an Archon and a Raider, as well as the Gangs Of Commorragh box and a set of the new Kabalites. Trying to justify the extra cost of Witch Aelves vs Wyches, and to figure out ways to have Aspect Warrior equivalents whilst keeping things plastic. Want to stick some dino-rider Exodites in the mix too, and thinking a Start Collecting Seraphon box set will be worth it for the Cold Ones and the big dino as well as maybe a box of whatever the Pteradactyls are called. Those AOS elf blokes with the 2-handed swords might make a good start for Incubi, but I'm looking for a better set of bodies, because so many boring poses on the AOS Elves. Kurnoth Hunters are another alternative option.

I've bought a big lot of Sylvaneth parts off ebay so waiting on delivery of those before buying too much but I can see this becoming expensive. Also really struggling for a good colour scheme. I like yours, but having played Blood Angels back in the day, I'm looking for something different than reds and golds. I am thinking off-white/bone colours will be a strong presence as it seems a very "death-y" colour. Maybe blue and purple accents? Although I have seen a lot of nice green painted things, and that would fit the Biel-Tan fluff. Any ideas, suggestions or critiques?

Purple and gold/reddish metallic spot colours look good with a bone scheme, so that's a good direction to lean in.

@craggy No problem! More twisted creepy Eldar is always a good thing

I'm with you on the metal and resin. I've sure resin works fine for beefier models like Marines, but for skinny Eldar it just doesn't have the strength to it. It works, but it's definitely delicate.

Definitely some good ideas you've got going there. I'd grab some kits and start mashing stuff together to see what you like the look of again I'm with you on the lack of dynamic poses in the old Elven kits. Shadow Warriors have some good variety, but a lot of them fall foul of having to fit in a regiment. That's one of the good things about AoS is the ability for models to break out of that constraint which means they fit a lot nicer for 40k kitbashes (although the scale does seem a bit off for humans). I keep hearing rumblings of cthulthu-worshipping AoS elves similar in style to the Mistweaver from Silver Tower which I really hope is true for conversion potential

Definitely rich purples and gold would go really nicely with a majority bone scheme, or rich dark green and gold too. Another option if you want to go further with the deathly look is to do black and gold for contrast colours. A dark grey base drybrushed with black would look sort of ashen/smokey which would look excellent

Another update too finished two more Croneworlders. The claw daemonette cultist:

And the Croneweaver from ages ago

I've tried to make the Croneweaver's robes look grubby and tattered as the fluff for them is that they were the priests and priestesses of Morai Heg, and are kept alive and forced to serve Slaanesh as a sort of cruel joke. I've got two options for that actually, but not sure which to go for. Which of these two ideas do people think's better?

1. The Priests of Morai-Heg are kept as playthings of Slaanesh as a taunt that for all of her wisdom Morai-Heg couldn't see Slaanesh coming.
2. The Priests of Morai-Heg did see Slaanesh coming, but thought she was going to be their saviour. Eldar God born during their longest period of peace and prosperity, prophesised to kill Khaine who had sparked a war by trying to genocide the Eldar? What's not to like? So, they actively worked to blind their God by feeding her false prophesies, fearful of her interference as she was Khaine's consort. As Slaanesh was born and the true horror of her nature was discovered, the Croneseers tried in vain to undo their work, for which Slaanesh has condemned them to live eternally in her service.

Perhaps both why not?

Either way, they've been cursed with hunched and wisened frames, and drab, dirty vestments. An insult for such a proud and vain race as the Eldar.

And here's the pleasure cult as it stands now 6 models strong. Slaanesh's sacred number

Yeah man that Croneweaver turned out great. So did the pinks on the clawed Slave to Darkness.

I'd go with Fluff 1 for the most part with Fluff 2 applying to a handful of members of a sub-cult. Most cultists of Morai-Heg who truly saw the future would've gotten out of dodge, either to an anarcho-primitivist colony or on one of the joykillers' worldships.

The Croneweaver is fantastic! I like fluff 2, it's very tragic.

For my own models I'm waiting to see what bits come in my sylvaneth parts lot, but have hellions, Reavers and kabalites ready and waiting. Definitely going to make use of those blank face helmets too, got some ideas for the painting of them, but need to up my skills a bit before going there. My 20 original Dark Eldar warriors were all built, so I'm using a couple of those to try out ideas. Thinking purple and maybe more of a copper or bronze accent instead of gold. Think I'm happy with mostly bone colour armour to start with. The one I've test painted looks nice.

Thanks guys! Really glad to hear I've done the artwork justice, and glad you like the Croneweaver

I definitely like your idea for a sub-cult of Morai-Heg being the basis of the Croneweavers using idea number 2. It definitely seems like a conspiracy type thing, and echoes the secretive Warrior Lodge thing in the Heresy with secretive sects running through larger cultures.

Plus, I've got a bit of an idea for an exodite Morai-Heg priestess that I want to try and do at some point

@craggy purple and bronze would be an excellent colour combo, and Reaver blank-face helmets are some of the coolest heads ever created in my opinion looking forward to seeing some of your guys come together

Oh, one other thing I decided that much though I really liked how the red looks on the tentacles of my Death Guard, I couldn't get past how much they distracted from the rest of the model so I stripped them back and repainted them. Much prefer them now, even if they're slightly less impressive

I've got the recipe for the red tentacles in the bank for later though Wild Rider Red with heavy washes of Reikland Fleshshade and Druchii Violet followed by a gloss coat

That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with these strange aeons even death may die. - Khalfhirin, Prophet of Ynnead

One of the effects Revenant Psykers of the Ynnari have is to rouse the spirits of the dead to a state of near-consciousness in their presence, as opposed to the sort of half-life they normally inhabit inside the Infinity Circuit. Here's a question though. What happens when you bring a soul back to near consciousness that's been interred into the shell of a Wraithguard? The first revelation would be that you discover that you are dead. Prior to this, you absent-mindedly wander through the swirling echoes of soulstuff, unable to differentiate the living from the dead. The second revelation would be that you discover you've been interred into what amounts to a mute sensory deprivation tank and used as a tool in the the most bloody and vicious conflicts your living kin have fought.

Consciousness inside a walking tomb is not a blessing, it's a curse.

However, such consciousness once gained is not lightly given up. Many Wraithguard abandon their stations upon Craftworlds to follow Ynnari prophets, desperate to avoid slipping back into the fog of their half-life. Such companions are highly prized by the prophets of the Dead God, having a marked impact on those they wish to convert. Many are festooned with charms and scrawled messages, believed to be carried to deceased loved ones by the wakeful Wraith.

And the Ynnari Cult as it stands at the moment

Next up, some fanatics!

Thanks man yeah I've always thought that Wraithguard (and Wraithlords) should look slow and deliberate, almost languid.

A lot of people convert them into super-dynamic poses and I just don't think it looks right. Half of the legs in the Wraithguard kit are too dynamic for my liking even!

It's also my first attempt at weathering wraithbone and I must admit I love the way it looks it's probably a little subtle to show up in my potato-photos, but I've drybrushed Mournfang Brown on any sharp edges and around his feet and the bottom of his tabard. Now I'm going to have to go back and do all my wraithbone like that as I like it so much!

Sometimes, I find a good way to look for inspiration is to work out what precisely what something isn't, in addition to what it is. Ynnead is the Eldar God of Death and Rebirth. Ynnead is not God of Healing. That's Isha's domain, who still lingers on in Nurgle's company.

Ynnead has power of life and death over the bodies of the Eldar, independent of their condition. We see this in the Altansari, saved from death by the power of Ynnead, but appearing as perfectly preserved corpses. Perhaps in time she will gain power over this, but for now she is weak. A small fish in a pond full of sharks. For now, simple animation will have to suffice. Hence the term 'Revenant Psyker'. What precisely do you think these Eldar should look like?

Slain by the blinding psychic light of a fell Sorceror, Ynnead has the power to restore life to your limbs. However, Ynnead does not have the power to restore sight to your eyes.

For Laeril, wraithsight would have to suffice. The alternative, she supposed, would be unimaginably worse.

The rifle is a loose Dark Eldar Splinter Rifle, I think from the Raider kit.

Must have missed your comment but thanks dude! Glad you like them

Little update too

A voice echoed out through the derelict palace, deep and thunderous in its rage. "Abomination, you call me. Perversion of nature. Soul Drinker. Tell me, voidfarer, how does what I do differ from your beloved Phoenix Lords? Their art is not so different to my own. The absorpsion of souls is in our very nature. We are but vessels constructed to contain its energy. Learn to control its flow, and you too can take from those who do not deserve life. You and I are different only in our habits, not in our nature. Despise me if you will, but remember, Selesti stands due to my will alone."

Not sure if it's actually noticeable in the slightest but I've had a crack at a bit of weathering on him dirt on the hems of cloth, a little of the same on his wraithbone limbs, some stippling on his blade and a little extra highlight on his feathered ruff. Probably more noticeable from behind:

Oh, and realised I'd forgotten to give his eyes whites!

Haha! It'd basically be the same, but with cosmic-horror Necrons back (with a dash more personality but not a shred more 'space-egyptian' than the original incarnation), more grey-areas and animosity between and within the factions. Everyone's been killing everyone else for 10,000 years. That doesn't just disappear because Chaos rears its ugly head every now and again.

Interestingly there is hints of Chaos Eldar in the new background stuff which is a neat little bit of validation for my Slaaneshi playthings

I think the Fallen Eldar have pretty much always been there. I'm sure I read a design thing back in the early 2000s where some Slaanesh models were deliberately modelled to look like they shared a common ancestry with the ol' Eldar.

Anyway, your new guy is great! The weathering looks amazing and I love how your limited palette works so well. What's the metal on his spear? It's somehow the same... tone? or whatever? as the bone. Good stuff.

Also, what bit is that bird-like thing on his shoulder?

Yeah i know that the daemonettes have a far amout of elven clues, which also translated really well to Fantasy. Just a shame i don't really like the models! They just seem,i don't know, lumpend and ungainly compared to the litheness-incarnate Juan Diaz ones...

Thanks man! He's actually an old guy but sort of remastered the metal on his spear's gehennas gold (stunning colour) with a Flesh Wash wash. Reikland Fleshade has a similar effect. The remastered stuff was a little stipple/drybrush of Warplock Bronze to break up the colour slightly. Not enough that you actually see it really, but it sort of changes the texture a lottle

Oh, amd the little gribbly is from the Sylvaneth Tree Lord kit

Well, I've been sitting on this dude for a while as I couldn't quite work out whether I liked the head I'd chosen or not. To the point that I wasn't really doing anything with him so I thought 'sod it, good enough' so here he is

Behold! Baharroth, The Cry of the Wind, The Winged Phoenix. Finest of the Asurya. 'Truescaled', so to speak

Now, the question is. How to paint him? Really, I lean pretty solidly towards Craftworld colours for Aspects, and don't wholly agree with the idea of named characters anyway. However, Phoenix Lords are jsut damn cool, and my favourite model ever when I was younger was Baharroth, so it had to be done

Does he look recognisably Baharroth to get away with a Craftworld colout scheme? Or does anyone have any ideas for making Baharroth's scheme a little more gritty?

Great job on this, he's recognizably Baharoth for sure and in my opinion much nice than the original model. Personally I'd paint him in his standard colours, I don't normally run unique characters but when I do I paint them in their official colours. I do this for two reasons: One is that it makes them immediately recognizable on the table of who they are and secondly it's so that I can push myself to try new colours and techniques that I don't normally get to paint on the rest of my force. You have some freedom on this guy too as his waist cloth can be any colour since the orginal Baharoth doesn't have one.

Yeah that's what I was leaning to for this guy. Any other Aspect Warrior would be in craftworld colours (still waiting for plastics!), but specifically because the background for Baharroth is he's basically an animated suit of armour that over-writes the brain of anyone who dons it with his own, you'd have to have him recognisable as the same colours.

Question is, how to make him look like he's a 10,000 year old suit of armour, while still keeping true to the original palette (if not the direct colours).

It's a shame that his colours are about as unlike the colours of my armies as it's possible to get. Why couldn't I have liked Fuegan? He'd fit perfectly

I'm mainly in it for the kitbashing potential although they'll definitely make a mint out of me as I'll basically buy two of each kit, one for Aspects and another for kitbashes.

Really, what I'd love is a set of dual-kits. Hawks/Banshees, Dragons/Reapers, Scorpions/Spiders. Each of those have a similar pose/heaviness of armour, and you can get the variation by heads, arms/weapons and different front torsos. Less individual bits than the Scion kit certainly

Thanks dude glad you like him

The gun is a Shuriken Catapult arm/hand, with the body from a Dark Lance and the barrel from a Heat Lance. It originally started life as a Longrifle for a plastic Ranger, but found a good purpose here

Speaking of Rangers...

Of all those who travel the skeins of the webway, it is us outcasts, us vagrants, who most frequently plumb its depths. My kin seek to exploit it like a tool. The Dark Kin seek to control it like an animal. The Harlequins seek to hide within it like a maze. We, however, seek only to explore.

As you well know, the rift that bisects our galaxy has breached many gates, allowing She Who Thirsts to seep into our realm. However, that same breach has opened doors long thought sealed. I have braved the predators that stalk these forgotten passageways. Through broken portals, I have glimpsed views not seen since the Fall. There are Eldar there, I am sure of it. What do your runes say, Seer? Even my untrained mind can see these places are heavy with fate.
- Ilgaith who Wanders, Outcast of Angvellaith

Ilgaith who Wanders? Hah! Is that what he's calling himself. We know him as Ilgaith the Deserter. Tell me, why do you trust his word?

Why did I desert? I'll tell you why. They didn't even give me a name. 'Warborn', is what they called me. One of thousands upon thousands, dragged from the vats of Commorragh, dressed in the uniform of Craftworld life and thrown into the meat-grinder of their pointless wars. I gave myself my name the day I deserted. Do you know what Ilgaith means? No longer faceless...

Thanks dude! Yeah I wanted him to look properly weather-worn. He has been an outcast for quite some time after all.

The Harlequin mask is something I was thinking while making him but haven't written the fluff for yet. My thinking is that wandering the webway is a very dangerous place for a craftworlder to be. Spirit stones are both rare and valuable to the DEldar, Corsairs and other Outcasts that use the webway, many of whom wouldn't think twice about murdering an Outcast to take their possessions (or just for fun).

One of the things I've thought with my Ynnari is that when the Harlequins choose you for a task, or you do something for them, they provide you with a mask as a token of their favour. The various murderers and scavengers of the webway might think twice about murdering a servant of the Harlequins.

So, one way to protect yourself is to purchase a mask on the black market. No-one else knows you're faking it, provided you don't run into the Masque whose player was killed to procure said mask...

Baharroth looks amazing, to be honest! Nice job!

As for a paint scheme, why not go with the colors of a Pheonix!? You could start with cool purples and blues and work through reds and yellows, and the scheme could be desaturated through lots of washing/glazes to get the colors over a white basecoat?

PS have to ask, but where are the wings from?

Thanks guys! Glad he looks like he's been through some sh*t that's what I was aiming for

Yeah definitely have a go Ember legs and front torso are Guardian (with the shoulder pads cut off), cloak is High Elf Shadow Warriors, hooded head is Wildwood Rangers, Splinter Rifle is from the Raider kit, and arms are Harlequin (as are the mask and the greebles)

Also, I've been thinking about this dude. The original idea for him was as a lone wanderer, but then i started thinking it would be neat to do a little warband of deserters-turned-explorers. That was influenced somewhat by the little diagram of eldar cultures on the new BRB, where 'Outcasts' are their own separate culture alongside Craftworlders and Corsairs.

This makes sense when you think of it as their mode of life is completely different to the Craftworlders. It's only called the Path of the Outcast because the Craftworlders worldview is as set paths reaching towards set destinations.

Then, i thought of the kickass name they gave not-Araloth in AoS: a 'Nomad Prince'.

So, how cool would it be to make an Eldar 'Nomad Prince' as sort of a Beggar-Prince of the outcasts and deserters. Sort of halfway between Rangers and Corsairs. Something to expand the idea of 'Outcast' beyond the narrow idea of Eldar who get bored with the Path and go exploring, into something like a vagrant itinerant culture of wanderlusting Eldar every bit as deep and broad as Craftworld or Commorrite culture.

This guy is hopefully the first of a number of waifs and strays depicting that culture (and the other assorted horrors that lurk within the crumbling realms of the webway).

Because Lord knows i need another new warband to make

Spoiler:
Edit: also, reading this has made me realise just how much I dislike the word 'Aeldari'. So long as you steer clear of Newcrons and inter-species co-operation I try to be upbeat about fluff changes, but honestly it makes me shudder. It's less that we already had a perfectly serviceable word for it: Eldar (although that's part of it), it's more that it's just an ungainly and ugly-sounding word in of itself. In addition to it being completely superfluous, it just doesn't sound nice, so I shall hereforth refuse to acknowledge its existence

My thoughts on the word "Aeldari" are to have it be a little like the english word "gun". The word can be written as "gonne" or "gunna" to reflect the original spelling, "Gunnildr". So Eldar is the common word for the species, but "Aeldari" is more similar to the Eldar's own spelling.

Post by: Ynneadwraith

Yeah that makes a lot of sense, and I'd be perfectly happy if it wasn't such an ugly sounding word even just 'Aeldar' I'd be happy with, but 'Aeldari' is just ungainly.

Ah! Cracked it! Just worked out why I don't like it. It doesn't fit the Eldar's root-language, it fits the Imperium's. Actually, it's a mashup between the two, which is why it sounds discordant.

The root of most of the Eldar's language is semi-Celtic, with some little twists to make it sound alien: 'Eldarten', 'Maugetar', 'Gergilath', 'Agaith', 'Ynneadlidh'. Meanwhile, the root-language for the Imperium's words is latin: 'Corpuscarii', 'Secutarii', 'Ministorum' etc.

Now, my latin is near non-existent, but I know that the suffix '-i' is a latin plural usually used for describing groups of people. Attaching it to an Eldar word just makes it sound fundamentally wrong, because it's not part of the same root set of phonemes. I've actually made a little Eldar dictionary from all the sources I can find online and in the codices I have (useful for making up names!) and I've looked through and can't find a single other instance of the Eldar using '-i' to describe a people or group.

Actually, looking through, it doesn't appear that the phoneme 'ae' makes much appearance either. There's one in the Dark Eldar codex 'Ilmaea', which isn't a true 'ae' sound as it's more of an 'a' followed by an 'ea' ('ea' is everywhere in Eldar words). The only other is in the BL novel Shadowpoint, which seems to have some iffy other duplicate words (which I've headcannoned as a different dialect). 'Ae' itself is a Saxon phoneme, which again fits the Imperium's medieval european/latin roots. I've actually used 'ae' in the naming conventions of my Exodites specifically because it didn't appear anywhere else in the Eldar language and made them feel like they were a different culture.

So, basically, the whole word just sounds wrong. Especially when there was already a word that means precisely what 'Aeldari' means (and fits all the other Eldar language conventions): Eldarith.

Apologies for the language pedantry but it's more of a simple thing that just makes a word sound wrong. It's like when you're hearing someone speak Spanish and then midway through the sentence they say 'Peanut Butter'. Somewhat jarring.

Wow yeah that's quite a massive file!

Hmm, I'm pretty sure I've heard 'ii' used to describe an Eldar group in the plural before... Alaitocii? Same for Biel-Tan, Iyanden and Saim-Hann?

You're right about the broader etymology but I don't think GW always stick to a singular 'real world' source for Warhammer universe equivalents. True the Imperium is largely 'German', but the Space Marine chapters are variously Norse, Mongol, Roman etc while you've got Arabic / US / Russian forces within the Imperial Guard and so forth.

The 'Stor Bezakht' (if I remember rightly) within the Iron Warriors definitely isn't named using overarching Imperial language structure!

I personally love the name Ynarii though, so maybe I'm biased

Yeah it's not a small one I've also missed out 'Kaelis Ra' for an instance of 'ae' too which is a bugger. Still think 'Aeldari' is a horrible word when 'Eldar' would be interchangeable in every single instance of it

Yeah I've heard that before too (although I think it's only from the Fracture of Biel Tan onwards). I've also used it as 'Selestini' for my exodites, so perhaps I'm being a little hypocritical. Plus, there's the 'Iceni' tribe of ancient British who fought the Romans, so there is precedent in the root-languages.

I also like 'Ynnari'. That feels like an Eldar word, and isn't ugly in the slightest.

Perhaps it's just a singular an irrational irritation with the word 'Aeldari'...

I think the issue is, they have had IP rip-offs so often they're moving to things they can trademark. Eldar isn't a name they invented (it's actually my ex-girlfriend's dad's name) so they had to find an alternative.

Thanks dude! Yeah it was partially inspired by your Eversor dude. Similar Khaine-worshipping bent, but basically one individual dedicated to murdering people because they believe the weak are a liability

Yeah I get the IP issues forcing a name change. Even 'Eldar' meaning elves is ripped straight from Tolkein. I just wish we could have got something a little more imaginative than sticking a few more superfluous letters into the same word.

Space Marines got 'Adeptus Astartes'. I mean how damn cool does that sound? It fits their language-profile, and references a kickass Mesopotamian war-goddess.

'Eldannar' would have sounded better, and that's simply derived from 'LamEldannar' which is the name for the Eldar language

Last one of the dude(tte)s that was just awaiting the final touches for paint

What happens when a Warlock wanders the Outcast Path? Wild psykers. Powerful, in their own way. Lacking finesse, but unfettered access to emotion provides them with a turbulent rawness which can often achieve a similar effect.

Mostly they wander alone. On occasion they find Outcast bands who tolerate their presence, although usually for only a short while. A Hedge-Witch is a valuable resource, but a risky one. Out here, far from the safety of the craftworlds, the gaze of She Who Thirsts rarely falters.

Maegwen liked this band. Perhaps they hadn't learnt better yet, but even being tolerated for longer than was necessary was more than she usually expected. Perhaps she could make a real difference to these people. Perhaps through this she could atone for what she had done, all those years ago.

What did she do? I don't know...but there must be a reason she compulsively paints the bloodied hand of Khaine on her face...

Thanks a ton guys! The hand-print was actually a bit of a coincidence. I'd originally intended to do some celtic-looking doodles (like my old Spiritseer: https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--pAAw8xsx--/c_scale,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/cug2tjof2zhwgqy7h62t.jpg), but they just didn't look right. The whole model was so gritty and weathered that it just looked too clean. Earlier in the day I was flicking through TV Tropes reading about the trope of the '5 races', and wandered onto the Orc page. Unlocked my phone to see the time and there was a picture of an Uruk-Hai with the white hand of Saruman plastered on his face and thought 'bingo!'.

Very glad I did as I'm really chuffed with how it turned out!

Close actually, although that's actually more The Young King's motivations. My thinking with him is that through surviving the sacrifice he's both come to a greater understanding of Khaine and also gone through a sort of semi-possession where he is now an agent of Khaine's will in the materium.

Khaine might be shattered, but he's still a God of the empyrean (with all the tricks of possession and suchlike that the Chaos Gods have). If the Cegorach and Ynnead have their agents in the materium, so should he. However, being basically dead he hasn't got the power/intelligence/cohesiveness for full possession so he sort of imbued this guys with an idea of what he wants done and the means to do it.

At the risk of dispelling the mystery, The Young King's grand plan is to murder Eldar for the good of the Eldar. If he is able to kill you, then you are not capable of surviving the onslaught to come and will only be a hindrance. Note that the victory condition is 'survive', not 'defeat', so running away or tricking him is perfectly viable. If the Eldar fight and lose, they will need the best tricksters and cowards in the universe to do what Cegorach did and flee so the Eldar can survive and rebuild.

So, yeah, serial-killing Eldar for the good of the Eldar. No-one is the villain of their own story

Maegwen is a little more mundane/nice than that monster.

Yeah sure I'll see what I can grab/set up.

At the moment, this is the extent of my warbands (more warbands than armies as I don't think I could make a single legal force with any of them):

True Kin:

Wych Coven:

Exodites (of the INQ28 variety):

Ynnari:

Croneworlders:

Malari:

Outcasts:

Things that Go Bump in the Night:

Of those, none of them are really finished. I want to expand on my Kabal a little (they're basically jumped up street thugs who have just started calling themselves a Kabal, so some sort of Hellion Militia would be cool). I've got at least one more bio-engineered Wych nearly finished as I want to go a little further into the multi-limbed thing. My exodites will be revisited soon hopefully to make some more characterful rank and file dudes (probably using some of my Hunters, and some war beasts). The Ynnari need two more cultists for that warband to be up to strength, and then I think I might try another (related) Ynnari Cult with a similar aesthetic but different motivations. The Croneworlders are probably as close to being finished as any of them, although I've been dying to make a daemon prince from a Verminlord). The Malari will be getting quite a few more members, both Eldar and...others. The Outcasts I've got two more nearly built then awaiting paint, and ideas for a couple more (I want these guys to be like a depleted Guardian squad that had enough for various reasons and deserted). Lastly, the Webway Predators I've got at least two ideas that I really, really want to make (just because I have a thing about doing villains right).

Oh, and I need some craftwordlers too! I've got fluff written and ideas formed, just need to make some models and/or paint them (my Storm Guardians are the first lot). As the models are a little hard to make creepy/grimdark I've sort of gone a bit hard with the fluff to make up for that

I'll grab a pic of my Corsairs as they stand as well. My plans for them I'm not sure actually. I think I want to make a 'listening cell' of 5 or so models to represent what the intelligence-gathering organisation of the Khaine's Ravens is like, while the red-and-gold main army force is representative of the punative military forces of the Ravens that they use if anyone tries to mess with their intelligence operations. I've also got another 5 or so Corsairs modelled from a separate force (must post them up actually, even if they don't have paint yet). Those guys are more low-level than the Ravens, existing as a sort of band of 5 low-level mercenaries/scavengers/pirates.

I do also have some other vague ideas for other groups of Outcasts as it's such a varied thing to explore, and a few neat ideas for something to do with Biel-Tan being fractured (two ways I could go with that: battered and worn refugees and/or vengeful nomad fleet like if the Quarians from Mass Effect were xenocidal warmongerers). Someone also mentioned that it would be a damn sweet idea to try and make some craftworld citizens, but in the usual was of bending them to be slightly more grimdark and alien than you'd expect from your usual interpretation of Eldar.

Oh! Harlequins. Forgot about those. I've got three painted and the rest of a squad modelled, but haven't touched them in a while. I must admit, Harlequins are the ones that I've found hardest to do something weird with. I quite like the idea of them as sort of lone emissaries, trusted by Eldar (potentially in error) and thoroughly manipulative even by Eldar standards. Not quite sure how best to work that into a model though...

tl;dr I feel like I've come quite a way, but there's still veritable fathoms of depth to the Eldar that I haven't yet plumbed, and I'm determined to make them every bit as varied, detailed and nuanced as the Imperium no rest for the wicked!

Good post. Really shows off your cohesive, but individually distinct, takes on the Eldar. Looking forward to more.

Hah, that's exactly what I'm doing with mine. They may or may not have a certain someone (whose name starts with "A") messing with them, but then again that might just be another trick. Tzeentch definitely has something planed for them.

You could add the Biel-Tan ones to your Ynnari. They could be a group of survivors that blame Yvraine for the death of their craftworld, but decided their best course of action is to join her followers and wait for the right time to strike. If you want to, you could make those your citizens, as I'd imagine many of the Biel-Tan survivors wouldn't care about their former paths and just kinda drift off into the jaws of hesheit-who-must-not-be-named. Just make an eldar architect and I'll be happy.

Thanks! Here was me thinking I was at best a scatterbrained hobby butterfly i suppose there's no reason those things are mutually exclusive

Nice angle with Tzeentch playing with them of all the Chaos Gods Tzeentch is the one that i've had the hardest time working in to Eldar fluff, which is odd when you think about it as their spheres of influence are pretty similar.

I thought about making some multi-faction looking Ynnari but i'm so sold on my low-contrast almost monochrome look and too much white or any green would ruin that. I do however agree wholeheartedly that the majority of the Biel Tan survivors would be almighty pissed at the Ynnari, and Biel Tan don't strike me as the sort to forgive and forget...

Funny you mention an 'architect' as one of my ideas was that Bonesingers have their own form of exarch suits, or even just weird aspect gear. The GW model, while really damn cool, is just sort of the basic Bonesinger. To build their more grand and/or intricate works of technology they'd need something to augment their natural ability.

Ha I was about to reply to the prior post with "you've not seen the GW Bonesinger model?" but you pretty much covered that - and I like the idea that they must use tools or amplifiers of a sort to build things over a certain size...

Although a bit like a 'brotherhood of psykers' to amplify powers, I'd have thought there would just be a 'brotherhood of singers' rather than something as human as using a tool.

I've been preoccupied with painting my wraithguard & converting nurgle chosen but that post showing off your collection has got me wanting to convert more eldar... maybe those Sylvaneth-based Mandrakes which have been kicking about the back of my skull for a while...

Like a Choir of Bonesingers? Yeah i definitely like that idea and something as prosaic as a tool does seem a little mon-keigh.

Perhaps the idea is more like a Bonesinger Exarch. What happens when you go so far down the Path of Creation that there's no turning back...

Ooh neat! I definitely want to see these Sylvaneth-Mandrakes of yours
