DV8's PLog - [1-1-21] - Necron, OBR and Junkforce Photo Dump @ 2019/12/31 14:28:53

Post by: DV8

Got a quick color scheme and basing (no tufts) test. I was originally planning to do black bone (you can see the color test on the wings), but there were far too many steps (4 different colors!) and far too much work for something that doesn't really stand out at all. I may use the black-bone colors as detail elements on things like swords, spears, and lances though, for a bit of variety.

And then diving right into it. Got most of the basic tones on the horses and halfway on the catapult. I will probably revisit certain parts to brighten up some of the tones to create some variety in the bone, but progressing along.

I want most of the focus and effort to be on the armor and banners (going to be so much freehand I think), so I want the bone to be simpler to contrast.

Very nice bone base, should indeed be a great contrast to that green (teal?!) armor

Also! Cool tiny Custodes force - I've been tempted to do a 1k superhuman force too, with lots of headswaps and a couple Pallas grav attaks scooting around.

After some tests, it's going to end up looking more green than teal. It took a lot of tests and re-dos, but I think I finally have a color scheme/palette that I'm happy with, and I've nailed the process of the army, so I'm looking forward to start cranking these guys out at a (hopefully) fast speed.

The majority of the bone (body and weapons) will be drybrushed with a pale tone, and I'm okay with a little roughness to help simulate the fossilization of the Petrifix Legion. Armor trim will be done in a darker brown ALMOST NMM old gold color tone.

The base will actually end up being changed for a red desert tone (similar to my Lamenters), because I found the yellow too overpowering and didn't balance well with the rest of the model.

Wrappings and tabards will be done in a grungy orange-red, banners will probably be a mix of pale green-white with green icons, and red with the pale green-white icons for Hekatos and heroes (hoping to get my Mortek done by week's end to help illustrate this). Weapons will be a "dirty" NMM silver.

Here's a teaser of some of my "test" models (my Mortek Crawler was really the dirty test-bed for all these different tones and colors).

Green and bone look great together. Glad you didn’t go for the black bone, while well executed, it just isn’t nearly as attractive.

I agree, and even monotone bone on the body and armor doesn't work well because it makes like 85% of most of your models the same color. It's a surprisingly difficult balancing act, IMO, made harder by the fact that I'm trying to drybrush as much as possible of the bone to reduce the amount of hand-highlighting I have to do.

Progressing on some Mortek (those helmets take forever, just saying!)

I've also built Katakros + his Posse, minus the back banners.

Now to grind through the rest of the army!

How difficult are the back-banners to construct? What parts did you use to get them so consistent? On first glance they look like they're made out of the spears?

Wow man, that crawler O_O Many great textures, in particular the NMM metal against the bone. Speaking of bone, is that airbrushed, at least in part?

Green armor does indeed look a treat.

The back banners are indeed the spears from the Mortek Guard kit. My Kavalos have back banners made from their own spears as well.

It's actually pretty straightforward. I have a pair of god-hand clippers, and with a really sharp exacto blade, you get very sharp clean cuts. I build one to size for the model, and assembly lining the rest to the same size is very easy (obviously build them all before attaching).

The banners themselves are just super sculpey. There is a slight porous texture to it because the sculpey was medium, and not super fine (and so the air pockets appear when baking), but it doesn't bother me that much. I just rolled a thin sheet, introduced some subtle waves, baked, and then cut strips down to size for the different banners.

Thanks! The bone is predominantly drybrushed. I only airbrushed some filters with VMC Smoke and Hexed Lichen to introduce a bit of extra oomph to the shadows, but that's about it!

I'm not the biggest fan of these models. But damn, your painting and palette choice is really showing these in a different light.

I Think you made the right choice with green. Look forward to seeing more to come.

Thanks howie! The color palette definitely took a few tries to nail down, but now that I have my process, painting these guys up is getting faster and faster!

Finished my Necropolis Stalkers. I will need to take a better photo sometime this week to submit for this month's Dakka challenge.

These guys have red banners as opposed to yellow to help me differentiate Hekatos from the regular goombas.

Yea man, very impressive blades, times twelve! I also appreciate those models a lot more now, seeing their weird backs and having a better idea of how I'd fix some of GW's odd flourishes.

Cheers! Yea the blades were a lot of fun of fun to do, despite some of the awkward angles as a result of how the models were posed! I'm looking forward to doing more of these guys (I have 3 more Stalkers and 3 Immortis with the big swords instead of halberds); quick and simple especially compared to Mortek Guard.

So I find that the Stalker 4-aspect heads sit too high compared to the Immortis heads, and it makes them look like they have super long necks. And it might just be me, but I feel that they're much more balanced with the back banners. Maybe it's just a bias I have from staring at my own models too long; they look weird without them.

Thanks Captain Brown!

Haven't had much time to work on my OBR lately. I've had to divide my time between school and Adepticon prep so probably won't be back onto the bonebois until end of March/early April.

Cranking out some Custodes; keeping it quick and dirty. Took the opportunity to experiment with oil washes on these guys, consequence free. And oh boy, have I been missing out! Why did nobody tell me about this stuff sooner?!?

The infantry are basically done. Need to do a few more filters and washes to smooth out some parts (like their blades) and throw in some weathering powder on the bases, and they're gucci.

I also did the silvers on the Calladius too (after I took this photo), so a few more touch ups, some oil washes, and some weathering powder and that guy will be done too. Maybe one more night's work on all the above? Then it's just the 2 Shield Captains (bike and foot), and I'm waiting on some of the new Sisters terrain that GW's teased to make a quick display board. My partner will be doing an IF/Black Templars force, so I think the colors will pair beautifully.

Thanks @youwashock!

Started working on my entry for Creature Caster's Resin Beast. Did some quick color block-ins with the airbrush and started to refine the colors on the head and chest. There are a couple scenic elements (banners and shields) that will be on the final base, but I've kept separate for ease of painting.

Post by: DV8

Thanks Fifty! I'm liking how they're turning out, just need to stick to the grind and slowly churn them out (hopefully getting the army done by the end of this year!)

We have a figure show (teaser at LGS in April, and then the full show in September) so I started putting together some of the pieces that I'm looking to get done for that (and pieces I can bounce between right now because I know working only on the Lady of Depravity will probably drive me insane).

And speaking of, more progress on the Lady of Depravity. Started blocking in some colors on the bottom of the tail, I'm liking where it's going so I'll keep working up the rest of the piece before I start playing around with color tweaks and nuances. I really want to play around with a mix of warm (front) and cool (back) colors in both the highlights and shadows.

And of course (esp for showpieces), it's worthwhile to periodically check your values so you know how your colors are sitting.

Lovely Custodes, good looking batch of busts and statuettes upcoming (and I love them toon tanks). But really I'm here to flail about and be excited about your Lady! I didn't expect that basecoat to end up so red, and that isn't a complaint

Post by: DV8

Thanks Boss! Yea honestly neither did I! I knew I wanted a reddish tone, but I wasn't quite sure how saturated I wanted it. But as I was laying down some colors and playing around, it just sort of happened and I really loved how saturated it came out!

Post by: DV8

Continuing to work on this piece. Got work done on the arms and I'm really trying to push myself on the cool shadow colors (still lots of work to be done, especially on the back view). I also tweaked and pushed the colors and highlights on the front to brighten and warm things up.

It's probably not going to be perfect lighting, but still a good learning experience and I think the experimentation will give the piece a great extra flavor beyond the normal bright light and dark shadow.

I think I'm going to take a break from the red and start working up the blades and base before I revisit more of the upper body to start pulling everything together.

And value checking, as always.

Hahahaha right right, her "crest" lol.

Yea I think a couple more evenings on the swords and wings (and once I paint up the initial colors on some extra base pieces I have set aside), I can start working up some freehand detailing too for that extra oomph.

And then the color filtering process starts. Plus I think I still need to warm up a bit of her front and cool more of the back (especially around the butt, still too warm compared to the arms)

The pillars on the fronts are made from sculpey that I rolled into sausages, textured with a round pin, and then baked, cut, and crumbled. The floor tiling is also sculpey that was then rolled with GreenStuffWorld's ancestral ruin, baked, and cut to shape. The ground texture is Vallejo Texture paste. Part of the model's OG base incorporates some Greecian pillars and statues already, so I kept the motif continuing.

With this whole COVID-19 forcing many workplaces to temporarily close (including mine), I've had an excess of free time.

So of course, what else am I going to do but finish models.

Next up on my plate is a couple of additions to my Nighthaunt collection (Olynder, Shadespire NH Crew, KoS on foot, a Spirit Torment, and 10 Revenants). With the cancellation of Adepticon and a lot of up-coming events, a number of my display pieces have taken the back burner and I've chosen to use this time to prioritize grinding through some of the meatier tabletop pieces I still have left. I don't expect the NH to take up more than a week, and afterwards I have a small Arena Rex crew and a BMG display board to do. From there, probably Infinity.

Yea, honestly a few design aesthetics about the army really irritate me, but were relatively easy to correct (the hamster wheel and bone ladders of the Crawler, the skull faces with noses that I just completely did away with, and even the multi-face heads of the Stalkers.

I'm doing my best to try and clear away as much of my meh backlog as possible during this time of quarantine. If (as I believe it will probably be the case here in Canada) we are stuck in isolation for at least one more month, I'll definitely be able to finish quite a few more projects!

I also finished a bunch of random odds and odds for my NH, including an extra 10 Revenants, some more Chainrasps (the Shadespire Crew), and Lady Olynder. The rest look the same as the army, so I won't bother posting more pics of the same, but here's Lady O, never to see the table unless her rules are rewritten or she sees a major points drop:

These are really beautiful I love the the red sand against the green on the models, the paint job and colour scheme are top notch I also paint in a high-contrast style like this.

Personally I don't like the black trim if these are meant to be played on the table. For display, yes. Let's say you have a really nice table to play these on with a similar theme - you would effectively have a black ring around all of your models draw your attention down to the base and not at the models. That's just me personally I know a lot of people love black rims. The hard thing though is that I can't even recommend something that would look better, I don't know if there would be. Black goes with everything. I feel like they look amazing though.

I just started a thread here if you want to take a look would appreciate critique.

Honestly I think you just answered your own critique! Black goes with everything, and it's a universal way to "frame" each base so that it looks good on any tabletop. Most armies that don't black trim (especially GW, if you pay attention) will still paint the edge of the base in a darker color of one of the dominant base colors as a framing technique. It contrasts the base texture well and helps elevate the model. It's best to think of each base like a mini-plinth.

Conversely, there's something unfinished about a model whose base trim is painted in a color that's identical to the base top.

I've done black trims for years, and I'm probably going to keep doing it because it looks good.

laughablehat wrote:Hey, any chance for a breakdown on how you did the OBR bases? sorry i just love ur bases lol

They're actually remarkably simple.

  • Build your model, stick it to the base, and then paint everything while leaving the base blank.
  • Once everything is complete, get some Vallejo Brown Earth Texture Paste and slather it all over the base. This bottle says it cures within 30-45 minutes. I usually give a few hours depending on how thickly I've applied it.
  • Glue tufts on with superglue. I used the Winter Tufts from Army Painter. I let this cure for 24 hours, just in case.
  • I apply a liberal coating (dusting?) with pigment powder. I used Vallejo Burnt Umber for this army. It's best to over-apply, because the varnish will lighten it up a touch. It's also important to recognize that over time the pigment powder will fade, so expect to have to lightly reapply every so often.
  • Paint the base trim black, and varnish the model when dry.

Yea she's less a display piece, and more tabletop painted for my army collection, so the base is done to match.

Seraptek Heavy Construct from Forgeworld. Spent about 2 weeks on this sucker, painting all the parts that nobody will get to see.

And trying a little something fun for this month's painting contest. My next few pieces will probably just be one-offs for fun before I jump into my Infinity.

Oh lordy, these minis are looking fantastic. I'm not usually a fan of the AOS minis but you've really done wonders with your paintjob.

I'm absolutely in LOVE with the bases for those Bonereapers - could you post a link to the pigment powder you use, please? I'm having a tricky time finding it, but I would love to try and imitate those results!

Other stuff is simply out of this world, too! And you've got whole armies painted like this? Unreal, simply unreal. Can't wait to see what you do next!

Spent the past couple weeks pushing paint on these models. Wasn't terribly motivated; the sculpts are great, but the dynamicism of the sketches and concept art didn't quite translate (it's like the sculptors pulled their punches), and the casts themselves were just awful, which made it hard to get excited about painting these models. Still, they're done. Moving on to my Necromunda gang, and more updates on that soon!

Thanks! I'm really excited to get my hands on the Newcrons coming out, but I want GW to wait until September-ish to release them so I can finish my MBA and wrap up a few other projects.

Thanks! Channeled a bit of classic Confrontation on them, but kept it rough and painterly.

I feel bad for not gushing as soon as I saw this earlier - because the crew looks great, also Arena Rex!! I can see being sad that the sculpts didn't go as hard as the art, and bad casts are always a bummer, but the end results rock. Happy to see the hippocampus or whatever it is in there, such a gleefully weird critter.

Haven't updated in a while; honestly it's been a rough few months and my hobby has taken a backburner as a result.

I've started work on my Kharadron Overlords, and it looks like the first model to be completed for the army will be the Ironclad, as I am completing this for the Dakka Monthly Painting Challenge.

The narrative behind my Kharadon Overlords will be a Halfling Junk Force, made up of scavengers and scavenger robots in lieu of Dwarves (*cough*Duardin*cough*). Think Borderlands meets Ian McQue. Their ships aren't particular new or fancy, but they're rugged, and they're continuously patched to keep them running.

The Heroes and unit champions will be Halflings, but everything else will be some sort of junk bot or scavenger bot.

Most of the fiddly bits on the ship are separate right now for easy painting, plus the faithful crew to be added.

So I've finished this project, and I'm super stoked to work on the rest of the army given how this turned out (and how quickly). I wish I could have submitted more photos for the monthly challenge, but being capped at 6 there's too much to show off.

whalemusic360 wrote:Are they going to be AoS or 40k? That looks very Orky. Would be cool to see the force that could work in either game as a counts as army.

This will be purely AoS. Its funny because I keep a very different narrative in my head for both games, and I'm much more willing to go goofy or esoteric with AoS than I am with 40k, which I almost exclusively keep grim-dark and super-cereal. It's odd.

Yea the riveting and plating makes it look Orky, doesn't it?

So I'm actually going through a Necron blitz right now. I am working on wrapping up the units from Indomitus (Warriors, Warden, Plasmancer, and Cryptothralls completed already). I'm almost done the Skorpekh Destroyers, and after that it's only the Skorpekh Lord, Overlord, and Reanimator left. I'll snap and upload photos hopefully soon.

I also pre-ordered Szerakh and 3 Lokhusts, and I'm going to be getting my hands on Wraiths, Ophydian Destroyers, and Hexmarks when they're released too (and probably the Monolith and terrain Pylons for completion when they're pre-ordered).

I also have a Command Barge to repurpose and paint, and a Nightbringer to paint up as well, and of course the Mourngul for the monthly painting challenge!

It's unlikely I'll get to more KO until probably mid/late November, depending on how much time all the Necron stuff takes. But for the KO, I'll have 2 Gunhaulers to scratch build/paint, 10 Arkanauts, 18 Erdrinriggers, and a few heroes (the names escape me at the moment).

Cheers! It was a fun project to really devote more than my usual 2 week cap on!

I'm actually not sure. I really really love the design of a lot of the new models, in particular the Skorpekhs and Lokhusts. My list brainstorms include both Wraiths and Ophydian as well, although I'm not sure what will be final until I get the book in hand.

I'm not a fan of Wraiths and the Ophydians are meh to me, although they remind me a lot of the OG metal wraiths from way back. If anything will end up being converted in the new wave, it's more than likely those.

I'll probably look at making my own Nightbringer too, one that's appropriate to scale. I would use my own Vishnu Destroyer Lord as my Nightbringer counts as, but the base is way too big. But I don't think it'll be a huge issue in casual play.

I almost asked if you'd be making your own Nightbringer The rules are star god tier but the teensy model is nice, if smol and cuddly tier.

The issue is I need to maintain a relative silhouette and base size. He's not a character and cant benefit from LoS, so it's actually do my disadvantage to have him be TOO big, although admittedly with the new building rules, I really only have to worry about weapons that ignore LoS (like Eldar DCannons)

Finished the Mourngul. This is a surprisingly difficult model to photograph because of the way it angles. Yikes. Also, WITNESS THEM BRUSH STROKES!

Experimented with a really simple, cool blood effect that I'm absolutely in love with (Tamiya Candy Red + VMC Black), and I need to find more ways to use it!

Cheers! Yea I'm hoping around December (or more likely January) once I've wrapped up this wave of Necron releases, I'll get back to my KO and start cranking out more of the army (because while I do want to get games in with AoS, COVID limitations and the state of the game with some of the newest releases have really kept back the urgency for the game, at least within our hobby group).

Woosh okay so this is going to be a pretty image heavy post. I've been a little slacking in updating this, mainly because I've been focused on grinding out all these new Necron kits to add to my collection/re-build an army for the new Codex.

First up is the Catacomb Command Barge. Another one of my old walkers, repurposed with new weapons and given a new paintjob.

I'd had this Nightbringer lying around for years and no excuse to paint him...that is, until I saw his shiny new stats. Unfortunately, because I already run a fairly small, elite Destroyer Cult themed army, he doesn't quite make the cut after a few test games. I need more bodies and ObSec units on the board to help with objectives. Was still fun to paint a little piece of history and scratch that nostaligic itch.

This was a really fun piece to paint, if a bit fiddly, and he's actually quite a lot of fun to play on the tabletop! We play mostly narrative/casual in our gaming group, so bringing this guy helps to power down my army quite a bit without deliberately hamstringing myself. And I get to use this sick model!

I enjoyed painting these heroes from Indomitus, but they'll probably never see play.

Love me some space cowboys. I picked up two in my excitement, and ended up reposing one to avoid twinsies syndrome.

Smash lord and his smash bois. These guys paint up super quick compared to their more snake-like brethren.

I hate painting Ophydians. If I never have to paint another one again, it'll be too soon. I am glad they're done though, and they're super fun to field, despite being very fragile glass cannons.

One of my favorite additions to the army. These guys are menacing AF, and they do tons of work on the table! We are playing a Crusade campaign and I've managed to make these guys Objective Secured with a Battle Trait. Oh boy, I'm glad GW didn't give them this natively; it would make them so OP!

Love these guys; I've swapped out all the Doomsday Arks in my list, and these 3 help fill the gap of bringing much more consistent heavy firepower. Plus the models are very cool, although all 3 have broken off their base-pegs now (and have subsequently been pinned; really should have done that from the start!)

So there it is; these are all the Necrons I've added to my collection this year, most of it since the release of the book a couple months ago!

Photo of my entire Necron collection in all it's magnificence. It's something like 7,100 points; I haven't actually tried figuring out the exact number, just ballpark.

I also took the opportunity to photograph my Ossiarch Bone Reapers army/collection, which I painted at the start of lockdown in April. I hate the way this army plays; it's boring and bland and they'll probably never see the tabletop again, at least not with me leading them. More than likely I'll probably sell the army to replenish the hobby coffers.

And prior to the Necron Codex absolutely slamming me, I had gotten some more work done on my Junkforce to get them to a place where I can start playing games with them. There's still a lot of work I need to do with detailing up the models, but at least I don't have to proxy anything anymore!

Everything looks awesome - but I don't have the words to explain how incredible that junkforce is. I have no idea what game it'll be used in or what GW army it's a proxy for, but I just adore how everything fits together in such a weird way. For example, the fact that the art design of the graffiti on the biggest ship matches the bots is a great touch, and using the BB halflings gives the whole group a ton of character. Can't wait to see them painted up.

S75 Black Metal, Heavy Metal, Vallejo Air Chrome for the silvers. If I use any airbrush for basecoats, Nuln Oil or Black Oil Paints to help blackline
VMC US Olive Drab, S75 Thar Brown, Mojave White, White Sands for the white
GW Nihilakh Oxide, White for the blue bits.

Yuuusss my silver robit bois collection is getting quite large now! Although I think in the next pass, I need to consider adding more Tomb Blades to the mix!

The Command Barge actually makes the cut almost all the time; he's probably the best HQ to take as a Noble to unlock protocols, that's durable as a Warlord, and contributes, unlike Overlords and Lords who are just ... buff bots. It's the Nightbringer that actually doesn't make the cut anymore.

Naw, if I have the points for a C'tan, it's going to be Nightbringer or Deceiver. I think both of those are just better than the Void Dragon. But honestly none of my lists would fit one in; I feel like they're a trap unit anyways. Too many points in a single model that's actually surprisingly easy to take down, and whose damage is far too swingy. Yea if the Nightbringer hits something, he's probably going to delete it. Just don't flub the damage rolls (especially against multi-wound units, and not a single target). And 350 points buys you a LOT of extra stuff!

Gorgeous work as ever - just had a nice decent catch-up of the unread portions. Truly inspirational stuff

That halfling airship is the coolest thing I´ve seen so far this year, love the colors. Can´t wait for the expansion of the army to be painted.

Your necrons are also amazing, great color scheme, and that huge crawler is ace!

This is simply amazing. It makes me want to rush and buy one so I can paint it and feel miserable about not being able to match that level.

    The junkship is amazing too.

Those are some good looking forces. Bummer you don't enjoy your boneybois but that just lets you pivot to something else.

What an impressive collection. 7,100 points of necrons?!?!?!
One does not simply walk into this force.

    Exalted DV8.

Enough said...although I like the airship the best.

Thank you! I'm really stoked to get started on my Junkforce, but I'm also going thru a huge terrain-building binge right now too, so the Junkforce will have to wait a little longer!

Naw don't feel bad! It's an awesome model to own regardless and it's not awful to paint, if you don't mind painting flesh!

Yea, it's a real shame; poor investment on my part and the entire time I was painting them, I knew in my heart of hearts I would never enjoy playing the army. Made it hard to trudge through, especially the 20 Kavalos.

LOL! I mean I've been collecting this army for a few years now, and once I paint Szerakh in a few months, it'll bump to 7500 and probably sit there for another couple of years!

Are you planing on getting a void dragon for your crons ?

How many hours a day on average do you get hobbying ? The output is impressive.

I am not. Not a huge fan of the model, and I don't really bring a C'tan in my lists anyways.

It really depends. Pre-COVID when I was working, I'd probably get 3-4 hours of hobbying a night (my girlfriend is in university, so I have a lot of free time because she's busy with schoolwork). Now that I'm currently job hunting, I sometimes get like 10-12 hours of hobbying a day. And sometimes I get distracted by video games or errands and get almost nothing done. But I always try to average at least an hour or two each day.
