Belated congratulations on finishing the pandemic figures! They look excellent!

The truck is looking good too, that's about the level of rust that my own actual car has!

Finished the truck bed and the items in it. Quite happy with everything in here!

Thanks Antiguo Guardian!

After stumbling into a truck on the streets that was almost identical to mine, with the license plate RSTBCKT, I decided to give mine Ontario plates! I think this darker blue is a pretty good take on Ontario License Plate Blue.

Weathered the bumpers! Some antiquing medium goop mixed with different proportions of black and brown worked great to get some streaks of engine grease out the engine grill. Also did the windows. Contrast Leviadon Blue over Abaddon Black deepens and evens out the black, then two shades of gray for light reflections. Forgot to do it on the back window then!

Home stretch, just the rear window, headlights and taillights left to do before we have one zombie-apocalypse-ready escape vehicle (fuel and keys not included, gotta get those through the gameplay!)

Lol, not much choice in a zombie apocalypse in small-town Ontario.

Did the back window, but I think I messed it up. Might need to redo it. What do you think, black it over and try again?

First of all, great rust effects.

I think the window would improve if you remove or minimise the lighter highlight on the top. Rest of it looks great to me though!

It looks pretty good to me Gwyn! The main difference seems to be the other windows only have a short line in the middle of the length of the long lines. The back windows seem to have both colours with lines of similar length. Not sure if that makes sense?

Next project was somewhat interrupted by loosening of shutdowns enough that I could visit my parents and grandparents, which was much-needed. Started back again! Got some Immortals started. Wish I had Indomitus but alas, money is tight. I decided that I didn't like my previous "green is gauss, blue is tesla" rule, having that much extra blue was one colour too many in an already fairly busy army (silver/purple/green with bone faces is already 4 colours, and I already have Crypteks and Canopteks painted up with red on top of that to make 5. Don't need to add that much blue for a 6th colour!)

Long time no paint! The third year of law school is supposed to be super easy. "3LOL". Not, apparently, when it's all virtual! This semester has been REALLY tight on me getting any painting done, so I've gotten barely any progress done on the immortals. I really want to get them off the table though so I can hopefully get something a little more interesting on the table. So I've been painting fairly sloppily, eh, sue me.

Spoiler:

Just gotta finish off the purple (this is just two coats of the base Naggaroth Night), do the forehead stripe, OSL green and green for the Triarchy symbol, and base them.

Thanks CB and youwashock! I like the idea that the Necron chests are just bursting with power, that the ribcage protects the intense power source that runs their living metal bodies. Once they get OSLed it also means they're much more equal in terms of green-metal ratio.

Just a small update: finished the purple (I like how the lighter purple colour encircles and frames the head), cleaned up and got a layer of contrast white onto the head stripe. Didn't wait for it to dry to take the photo, next up is finishing the stripe, OSL, then basing and shouldermark transfers.

Thanks gobert! The spine OSL is the laziest possible OSL, a single light brushstroke running down the spine between the protrusions.

Not Online!!! wrote:They are coming along quite marvelous.

Thank you Not Online!!!! (four exclamation marks, 3 yours, one mine).

We're gonna be switching up the game today! So because I've decided I need to rescale my Terminators (Terminators shouldn't be dwarfed by Primaris marines guys), I wanted to redo my Marines scheme. And however could I decide?

Well.

I made an excel table of all 407 chapters listed in the wiki (including those canonically destroyed or went traitor). I numbered them all, giving them weights so that if they were destroyed or didn't have a known scheme I was less likely to roll their number, and if they were First Founding or otherwise a "featured" chapter like the Crimson Fists, Space Sharks, Black Templars, Flesh Tearers or similar, they got a heigher weight.

Well, the random number generator made their decision, and I could not be happier.

The colour scheme is Flesh Tearers! A darker red (airbrushed for ease), with black shoulders, helmets, backpacks, and chest ornaments. These specific minis however are the Dark Vengeance Dark Angels with Dark Angel insignia filed off I believe (except with different Sarge, Special and Heavy). I also have the captain and librarian from that set. I always liked the Dark Angel robes though, so I don't mind throwing some nice robed figures in with my Flesh Tearers. These guys will likely be Combat Squadded because, while I have 15 Tacticals, I only have 2 Sarges.

Progress is slow. And currently ugly. But it’ll fix up, I think.

Gwyn's Table: Negative Space, AAAAAAAAAAAAAA*pop*, and Oh Captain My Captain @ 2020/11/29 20:36:59

Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll

Decided to do up the Sarge as a template model for the rest. Make sure I like all my colour choices. And I'm glad I did, because I realized I want to use a different final highlight for the black aquilla and gun casings than I do for the armour and backpack.

So far we have, for the black armour: Abaddon Black, Eshin Grey, Administratum Grey, Nuln Oil. For the gun casings and aquilla: Abaddon Black, Eshin Grey, 50/50 Eshin Grey and Karak Stone, Nuln Oil.
For the red: Khorne Red, Nuln Oil (next is a medium red highlight, then Cadian Fleshtone final highlight).
For the robes, so far: Greyseer, Skeleton Horde, Seraphim Sepia (next is likely Screaming Skull, then Pallid Wych Flesh).

So my highlights on the gun casing were too thick, and looking at it there's still red bleedthrough so I didn't paint my black down thick enough in the first place; will fix that.

Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll

Thanks Viterbi! Unfortunately on the whole the mini is finished, I'm keeping the colours fairly low-contrast. Just details and special effects left.

Thanks DJJazzyJeff! It took me like 5 tries to figure out a technique that worked xD

Speaking of special effects, I really liked having OSL red light coming out of my old Terminators, so I'm gonna keep that around on my Flesh Tearers, even for regular infantry. It works really well here when it catches a little on the shoulder with the chapter badge!

Edit: looking over the old pictures, I also didn't leave any margins in the book! I'll fix that, it should also help keep the red letter looking more like a single large letter rather than a whole word.

Gwyn's Table: Negative Space, AAAAAAAAAAAAAA*pop*, and Oh Captain My Captain @ 2020/12/06 10:13:51

Post by: gobert

In the grim darkness of the far future there are no margins, only full page justified text! Margins aside, the book looks great, I’d leave it and keep that lesson for the next mini! The freehand saw blade and the OSL are looking cool. The plasma glow on his hand works well to me. I’d maybe add a wash to his lenses to outline the lens a bit

Thanks gobert! I don't think it'd be too difficult to fix. For the lenses, I actually went and redid them entirely, as well as touching up the plasma. All other details done. Plus you can see the barrel weathering I did a bit clearer here.

Now to do up the rest of the squad (not gonna base the sarge until the rest are done).

Thanks Flapjack and Tyranid Horde! I'm very happy with both, especially for first tries. The burnt barrel effect will also appear on this unit's lascannon and meltagun.

Viterbi, I haven't given it too much thought. I'm leaning towards a cool-hued blue-grey moonscape though. Light in shade and cool in hue to best show off the dark and warm Flesh Tearer colours.

 Tyranid Horde wrote:

Flesh Tearers use a mix of Codex and Blood Angels heraldry. The traditional white role symbols on the right pauldron, overlaid with the Blood Angels Company heraldry (only 3rd and 7th companies are red instead of white). So here we can see a single red drop over the "battleline" symbol.

Flesh Tearers don't use the Blood Angels kneecap-heraldry for squad numbers though, they use simple numbers on the right knee pad (not yet pictured). Similarly, Flesh Tearers don't follow the Blood Angels inversion of the left pauldron to mark a Sergeant, but there's no canon markings. Rather I've chosen to mark Sergeants more subtly with a black right knee-cap (not yet pictured). I've also added a blood drop to the Sergeant's helmet. I've yet to decide what to do with Lieutenant, Captain, and Veteran iconography, which I don't believe is canon either.

Congrats on finishing up the squad! A lot of really cool techniques going on here, from the plasma and melta effects to the eye glow to the parchment and the cloth on the sergeant plus some really nice depth on the red.

Looking really painterly and unique - I would love to play against them!

Photos are the great revealer aren't they just when you think you're all done...

Can't wait for more

Thanks youwashock! I find that the models always look super disappointing until the details are on them. In this case, it wasn't until the freehand symbols were down to break up the black that I was really happy with them.

theCrowe wrote:I really like your painting style on these marines. Great choice of chapter for a start. (Classic stuff right off the old 2nd ed SM chapters poster iirc.) But the way you're painting them up while its not real crisp it's bold and super effective.

Thank you! I'm still a long way from doing super crisp edges or smooth blending, but every unit I paint I get a little bit closer.

Tbf I did know about the stray paint flecks, but was being lazy. But once I saw a whole missing purity seal, and on one of the feature models of the unit to boot, I had no excuse.

I reorganized my display shelving a little bit, now the top has LAYERS. Like an ONION. I do intend to redo the terminators eventually, but that's low priority.

Excellent work on the Flesh Tearers, the crimson is gorgeous and I’m a fan of the layered osl, as well as the heat effect on the meltagun barrel. Little things like that bring a model to life.

A great looking shelf of painted minis gwyn. The Tearers came out well and look like they’re making a final stand against the Necrons with your terminators. Will the Termies be joining the Flesh Tearers or just getting an update?

They will eventually join the Flesh Tearers, but I'm prioritizing un-painted miniatures first. Speaking of which.

Remember this Flayed One concept, from way back on Page 3? Literally from November 2019?

Well guess what's next on the table.

My best friend got me the Recruit box, and with it came a bunch of extra skulls. "Perfect for my Flayed Ones" I said. Well, It's time to actually build them.
Scale wise, they're likely a solid bit bigger than the new Flayed Ones (Immortal behind them next to the tallest of the Flayed ones for scale), and I put them on 32mm bases (no way those legs would fit on 25mm). I'm hoping that the new Flayed Ones are also up-based to 32mm...

Flayed One 1 is taller with a damaged head, looking as if it's recoiling from damaging hit.

Flayed One 2 (with Immortal for scale) needs some cleaning up on the head (which I dropped after it had been glued and so the glue got everywhere and started stranding. This is the test mini that I had done the legs and arm already from ages ago.

Flayed One 3 is really clean!

Flayed One 4 has this interesting hunched-over looking-over-one-arm look that requires two photos.

Lastly, Flayed One 5 is just asking for a skull to put in his hand.

Thanks Not Online!!! They're a lot of work and, especially now there's new models, likely a good bit more expensive (Glaive Wraith bodies may be pretty cheap on ebay, but the AdMech parts aren't!), but I think they're gonna be a little more interesting.

I got some green stuff gap-filling done, and hole-hiding with a couple extra strands of flesh hanging over the arms to tie them into the piece. The next big challenge is to make and attach the second arms without screwing over the poses!

Great job on the tac squad, great feeling to get them into a display case and move on to the next project!

Keen to see your NightCrons progress, I've been sitting on my own nighthaunt and there's a definite temptation to go down a necron or dark mech route with the unbuilt ones I have. Flayed ones were a good start!

Thanks everyone! Let's hope you keep the enthusiasm now you see the second arms!

Unlike the first arm which was stock from the Sicarian Infiltrator/Ruststalker kit, I built the second hands from a mix of Idoneth, Daughters of Khaine, Canoptek Wraith, and Nighthaunt bits, built onto a Sicarian arm.

Here's the whole squad, then I'll go through them one by one again.

Flayer 1 (not the same numbers as last time just the order the pictures are coming up).
This one got a really "hand-shaped" hand, and some extra skin flaps on his big arm. I'm very happy with this guy generally!

Flayer 2 has a kind of bladed spike with extra hooks and protrusions? I'm considering snipping off the hook and the "thumb" and replacing them with less protruding blades tbh. I wanted this guy to look like he was stabbing somebody off to his side.

Flayer 3 was the one with the messy head. I gave him a bit of a flesh hood to hide the mess underneath when I did the greenstuff. I'm quite happy with his pose!

Flayer 4 is still a little "Horatio", but also a little "Kamehameha" now. One really big claw though!

Flayer 5, the recoiling one, got one MASSIVE blade. It still has a thumb though, and a smaller blade on the other side of the blade opposite the big pitted and rusty blade.

It's a question generally more applicable in WH40k; is we consider warp presence to be a "soul", than many sentient and sapient creatures are "soulless". Do they "exist" in the sense that Shakespeare intended Hamlet to ponder? I would argue yes - Hamlet posits the existence of an afterlife for the soul after death. He ponders not the end of "being" of the immortal soul but the end of "being" of the mortal mind. Additionally, if one accepts the Flayed Ones to be "mad", then can they be "mad" without having a mind for which that madness to exist in? In this essay I will-

gobert wrote:Cool conversions Gwyn, they look work really well as part robot part ghost

Thanks gobert! I think some of the ghostiness will disappear when my painting reshapes the ghost-body into a flesh-cloak.

Guardling wrote:Those flayed ones look cool, looking forward to seing them painted

You're in luck... Thanks Guardling!

Da Boss wrote:Every addition makes them look better. I wish the kit looked like this!

Thanks Da Boss! Personally I also prefer my look to the kit (even though the new ones are a marked improvement from what I've seen), but we'll see.

I got my first bits of paint down on them! I ran out of primer just before I was able to prime the underside of all of them, but I think they're primed enough to take paint.
Started with the metal. Unlike my more pristine minis, I've done something new with this. Leadbealcher base, then a single wash each with Seraphim Sepia and Agrax Earthshade. Corroded metal shows how little the Flayed Ones have been taking care of their bodies, more concerned with covering up their metal "bones" with skin and flesh.

I do intend to give these guys a dry-brush after to bring them back a little bit more vibrancy. But not too much.

I'm considering expanding this scheme to varying degrees across my army to deviate a little bit from the boring "steel with accents" look that Necrons get. If I do, I would tint more the lower in "social class" and less in the upper classes, with no tint in maybe Lychguard and up (Flayed Ones/Tomb Blades/Cryptothralls>Warriors/Destroyers>Immortals/Pilots/Deathmarks>Lychguard/Royal Warden/Praetorians>Lord/Crypteks>Overlords, roughly). It's a tempting idea.

Thanks gobert. Another advantage is that because I can do it with just washes and dry-brushing, I can update old models really quickly if I decide to do that.

Not Online!!! wrote:Gotta say, that is a nice aged metal indeed.

Leadbelcher, Seraphim Sepia wash, then a light Agrax Earthshade wash. It won't stay this aged, but it will be notably aged compared to my other minis when I'm done with it.

Did a ton of work in the last go. Finished the eyes, and got the first coat of contrast or base-and-washes on all of the flesh! I'm aiming that each Flayed One has two different "tones" of flesh on them. Like an onion or an ogre, they have layers!

I find all of the contrast washes are very similar and all very light, so I always have to add my own darker tones non-contrast.

Next, gotta highlight the skin, add blood to it, fix up some odd tubes on the legs, and base them!

darkkt wrote:These flayed ones are looking tops and the conversion is a great idea for those spare heads (...hmmm now i think about it my son has the recruit box....).

Also a good use for those awkward AoS starter "5 Glaivewraiths" when glaivewraiths come in units of 4 xD
The legs are the only INCONVENIENT part, and you can sub those out for any robot legs that aren't too big that you can get your hands on! I personally think the Sicarian legs are best because they get across an animalistic feel, but any work if you can figure out a way to put them under the robes!

So I DID finish the guys, bases and everything (though I'm just about out of Agrellan Badlands). And I did my photoshoot. But then looking over my photos, there were a few where the skin highlights were clearly "this is a line of off-white paint on top of a darker tone", not nearly as thin as I thought they were when I was doing it. So I deleted all the photos and gave them a wash to subdue the highlights and blend them into the rest. Sooooo, pictures pending!

I did start on the next project. Firstly, I put some Aggressors with flamers in Green Stuff to strip to turn them into Flesh Tearers. I think Aggressors are pretty decent in Flesh Tearers. T5 Sv 3+ W3 is good enough to hopefully survive to T3. T2 12" Assault 6d6 auto-hit S4 AP-1... well it's not great. But hopefully it's enough weight of fire to get rid of a screening unit to get at the big boys that they really want to get on T3. But once we hit T3, that's 16 attacks (3 each, +1 for sergeant, +1 each Savage Echoes, +1 each Shock Assault), 4+ to hit hurts (-1 to hit), but S8 w/ +1 to rolls (Fury Within), AP-5 (Fury Within and Assault Doctrine), D2 will RIP apart pretty much anything.

Unfortunately the main bit of the next project requires me to get my hands on new primer. I had already primed the minis, but the gaps in the fit were too big for me now, so I had to green stuff gap fill them, and now they need a touch more primer. I guess it's small enough that I can paint on the primer though, because the Flayed Ones ate up the last of my can!

Thank you aku-chan! I'm a little creeped out myself tbh.

JoshInJapan wrote:Goodness me, those are gross! The skin looks freshly flayed, especially in the army pic. Well done!

All credit to freshness to the wonder that is a light and indiscriminate brushing of Blood For The Blood God. Plus I always chicken out when my highlights are too light, but making it look paler would make it look more aged.

I'm realizing now that flayed skin probably wouldn't bleed more when it's "pierced" by the spines like I painted, which either adds to the freshness or makes it look like the skin is their own skin being pierced, but good enough for me and the girls I go out with.

theCrowe wrote:They're a great contrast to the bright colours of the rest of the army. Really cool unit.

There's no purple on them anywhere either! They really are "aside" of the army. They don't fit into the Lord's Order of Battle, but fit their fluff of a gaggle of hangers-on who follow the army around and pick opportunistically at the edges of the battle.

Now that Novokh is a pretty hot sub-faction for Necrons, mostly because it gives Gauss Reaper Warriors (who are going to be close-up and personal anyways) a little staying power in melee, I wonder whether we might see more Flayed Ones on the table? I also admit wondering how much the new Flayed Ones will fit in next to mine. The painting was super easy and flew by, but the conversion really was quite a pain. But 10-20 Flayed Ones is so much fun...

Anyhow, who can recognize the next project?

Love those flayed ones, they fit the background much better than any of GWs attempts.
Those bases look like the banshee bases to me, you've made the right decision to paint the bases before putting the banshees on - there are some very hard to reach bits if they are all built as I found out when I painted a set. Then I built some more and did the same again

*dingdingdingding* we have a winner! The bases are Myrmourn banshees, which I will be painting up in my "skin-veil weeping-eye" scheme to match the Chainrasps further up in the scheme. Their "bodies" underneath the veils will be more white and less violet, however, to get more "bride" across.

Mostly I separated the bases because I had to do gap-filling on the ETB main bodies, but I wanted to paint SOMETHING while I waited. But now that I have I'm glad I did. Even though, like the Chainrasps, I'll be putting a layer of mist or fog (cotton ball fluff) over the base... I think I'll go lighter than I did with the Chainrasps though! Make it more "wisps" than "cloud".

Viterbi wrote:Finished Flayed Ones look amazing, very nice contrast between the metal and flesh tones. But what really sells them are those bone-colored faces with their green glowy eyes.

Thank's Viterbi! I think the metal and flesh are both interesting tones, but the clean-ness of the faces and the eyes draws attention to them. Tbh I wasn't as happy with the eyes this time around, I'm glad you liked them!

Another colour laid down and finished on the bases! Nice bright green vines, creepers, and leaves. Though I'm realizing now I should redo the leaves in yellows, oranges, and reds, especially considering my roses are going to be on the pink side. Soooo, I'll go back and redo those after I finish the pink roses and the bones.

Nighthaunt sculpts generally are quite good, but they're very thin and fiddly, which makes converting them hard.

Bases are coming along. Just need to put some highlights on the bone and flowers, then fix up the leaves, then on to the bodies!

Highlights done on bones and roses. Would be done at this point if I didn't decide to redo the fallen leaves, which luckily enough would be undercoated in the same pink that I used to finish off the roses! Gonna do that pink undercoat for the orange and yellow that I absolutely love.

They really are very detailed! I have the ETB nighthaunt horsies as well and they're just as detailed.

Da Boss wrote:I was drawn in by the Irish in the thread title. Well played! Those bases look awesome.

I'm surprised by the plural of "women" myself, had to triple check it!

I have a question: Do you guys think the "leaves" are better painted as fallen autumn leaves, or as fallen rose petals! I can go either direction from where they are now, but I'm torn now between them!

Gwyn,

Aren't you a little worried that the bases for the Myrmourn banshees are going to be too bright for an army of the dead?

CB

Gwyn's Table: Negative Space, AAAAAAAAAAAAAA*pop*, and Oh Captain My Captain @ 2021/02/17 19:03:37

Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll

Not particularly. Firstly, the base will be seen through primarily a gauze of mist and fog. Secondly, Myrmourn banshees have this "bridal" thing going on, so I want them a bit brighter than other Nighthaunts. Lastly, my Nighthaunt scheme isn't that "ghostly" so much as it is "horror". Less ephemeral, more apparition, if that makes sense. All physical "objects" are painted as if they are real, limbs and faces are paid quasi-skeletal, and the "bodies" have a layer of flayed skin, with only the "under-layer" of the body-robes being a transition from ghostly purple energy (again seen largely through the mist and fog cotton-swab) up to a white.

Yeah, Mná is women in Irish. It's funny sometimes when it's written on the doors of pubs (Fir is men, so you often have Fir and Mná) and non-Irish speakers will often choose the wrong one, since Mná is at least similar to Man!

Looks like you’ve moved on rapidly! The Flayed Ones came out fantastically well, a really insane macabre bunch they are. I’ll second the praise for the bases, they’ve got fantastic detail on them. I think having the leaves/petals as petals works well, so I’d stick with that

I agree, I did them up as petals and it looks so much better than adding another colour! Need to clean this up and start on the bodies now!

Skin and bone/flesh done (other than Blood For The Blood God). The bone-coloured arms that clearly aren't skeletal are still weird, but I'm sticking to it. They're creepy ghosts, not literally skeletons! Also my excuse for why the "flesh veil" seems to be phasing through one of the tombstones. Not literal flesh (unlike my Flayed Ones), but ghostly apparitions that appear to be wearing skin-veils.

I hope to push the skin veils just slightly higher on creep factor still!

But first, I want to finish the elements that tie into the base. I did the rose petals, started the stonework, then realized I missed a whole rose, so you get to see this partway through a rose and partway through the stonework!

Obviously it'll require some cleaning up on around the petals too.

Started the metals. Balthasar Gold + Sycorax Bronze + Agrax Earthshade. Next, another layer of Sycorax Bronze, then a silver highlight on the blades, then Nihilakh Oxide!

Thanks Tyranid Horde! I'm hoping having a cool-toned "dress" will connect up with the cooler flowers (compared to a normal deep red at least) and the blue discolouration you can see below on the metal to also give a nice cool/warm contrast.

Flesh veil! Flesh veil! Flesh veil!

School picked up the last little bit, but I managed to find time to put in the tonal scale that will underlay the purple wash on the ghost-bodies. Found some fence that I missed, so started working on that. And I started working on a couple details; one has a pale sash, another has an hourglass.

Finished jeans, boots, flesh, hair, and apron. Face is a bit out of focus but that's ok because you'll see it better once I do his glasses anyways.

Apron and flesh are contrast (2 and 1 coats, respectively), jeans are the awfully named Stegadon Scale Green and Sotek Green with a dark blue wash. They're not green. Awfully named paints. But I gotta say they're beautiful tones, and they make AMAZING blue jeans.

Finished Mr. Hyde here! In case anyone was wondering, he's from the zombie board game Last Night on Earth. His special abilities are he's better at fighting hordes of zombies, and he can protect Student player characters.

Front

Rear - I can see a few spots where the colour from the straps bled onto the white shirt that I missed. Might have to go back and fix that.

Bonus: scale shot with some Tactical Marines. Also highlighting (heh) that I clearly need a more matte varnish, because he looks SHINY here. It works for my Marines and Necrons, but on more naturalistic models like this it's a bit jarring!

Please do! It's a really easy way to add interest, though it is nerve wracking once you've put down the PVA glue and are trying to tease the strands of cotton into place!

And now I get to do it again on a high stakes figure!

I started Lady Olynder years ago, and now it's time to do her properly! This is the undercoat tonal transition of the ghost bodies and the contrast layer of her veil put down. Note that her handmaiden's don't have the second "layer" that almost all Nighthaunts have, so no flesh for them! There was also a bit too much pooling near the ends of the tattered veil, but I intend to drybrush a much paler colour over the veil, so I'll try lightening those up. Maybe even a light-coloured thin wash.

All the other colours are remnants of my first base coats I put on them ages ago.

She's one of my favourite GW models, I've been looking forward to doing her for ages!

Fantastic! An especially dense layer will work great for the Craven King, as he really floats high above the base!

Thanks gobert! Actually using the base might wait a good while.

Tyranid Horde wrote:More solid work Gwyn, that base for your overlord looks very cool. Keen to see Olynder in your scheme, I think it'll be something special.

Thanks Tyranid Horde! I think Olynder is gonna be quite the centerpiece, here's hoping!

I got the purple on her, and I dry-brushed the flesh veil. Those being the two most important steps, I think this is a promising result! I think I'm going to need to do more highlight on the white, it's still coming out really flat, the Apothecary White Contrast isn't quite enough on it's own, especially around the filigree.

Looking good Gwyn, if you want some definition around the filigree, would the purple you used for the cloak be a good recess wash?

That's an interesting idea. It'd have to be watered down I think. That or make a really light gray wash.

While pondering that, I re-did the bone arms and faces.

Thanks guys! Lots of small updates today. Did base coat and washes on the bronze and gold (difference is the gold has a red wash as well as a brown wash, and will get different highlights), the wood on the casket, the glass of the hourglass, and a white highlight on the white (which fixed the details too, though my brush was a little less accurate than I could have hoped).

Thanks everyone! I'm happy with the hourglass, I think it makes a fine detail on the mini.

Did a little bit more work. Highlights on the bone, and finished off the bronze and the gold! Also put a blue wash on the hourglass glass, because the white on the broken bottom bulb was a bit too bright. Looking at it close up, I need to do a paler Skull White on the teeth.

Thongs gobert and Robert! I'm really happy with the hourglass. Funnily enough I didn't really spend that much time at it, I basically just threw paint at it instinctually. Wait, does that mean that I might actually be getting to understand how to paint light and glass now? No let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Super exciting update today, because I got BLOOD EFFECTS!

I'm very happy with how this came out, especially with the "tears" from Olynder herself!

Olynder is coming on very nicely indeed. As others have said, really good job on that hourglass. I've heard this model can be a pain to paint - very wobbly due to few and thin attachment points. How have you found it?

The thin attachment points are definitely a problem, and she's on a bit of a spring. I broke off, as you can see in my WIP images, the vine that is "inside" her body, and I HIGHLY recommend anyone painting this model to paint it in sub-assemblies. Do the handmaidens separately. Do each layer of vines-veil-hair-body separately. Ultimately my style of painting minimized the issue with the wobble. I paint and finish each "section" before moving on to the next, which allows me to handle the miniature itself rather than hold the base. If you do all the base coats then all the layers then all the washes or in whichever order, then yeah it'd be a pain to do like that.

inmygravenimage wrote:Really stunning, superb work and very inspiring (to me and the boy).

I'm glad that my work can inspire, I think your (and your boy's, his Mourngul work was very cool!) work is inspiring myself so your words mean a lot!

Bloodal wear.

Tyranid Horde wrote:That praise for the hourglass keeps echoing, as I'll add to the chorus! Blood effects look awesome too, the glossy shine adds a really nice visual interest.

Thanks so much! I noticed that there appears to be a bit of "reflection" in it. It's honestly a fumbled brush-stroke that just happens to look like a reflection of the handmaiden's, well, hand. Fortune favoured me with this mini!

And she's done too!

"Even spoken in a whisper, it crept into the ears of everyone in the observatory. 'The crypt-court of Lady Olynder.'" - excerpt from Lady of Sorrows by C L Werner.

At a human's eye-level, she does not even deign to look down upon the mortals, gliding eerily above the wall of fog. Her handmaiden's have no such compunctions; beware their freezing touch!

Behind her, her tattered veil of bloody flesh floats suspended in the windless air. Her raven hair is flung behind her, underneath it, caught in a wind that no other feels.

Her handmaidens carry the arcane Grave-sand Hourglass; the sands of the lives of bold heroes silently fall away before her.
Spoiler:

Tears of blood well through the flesh-veil that covers her mysterious face. None who have seen whence the tears flow and lived, and her ghostly entourage will not tell her secrets.
Spoiler:

She leads the Nighthaunts, an unending nation of spirits, against any who would oppose Nagash.

Yeah, the vines on some of those Nighthaunt minis are super brittle, I broke the one on the Underworld's warband leader without even trying. Love Lady Olynder, such a unique take on her. From black at the bottom of the dress to pure extreme white highlights is a really brave colour choice and you did really well with it.

Thanks ListenToMe! Yeah the Underworlds Briar Queen is also terrifying because the vines *stretch out*. Just nerve-wracking.

Unfortunately it's not, I intended to go get one from in-store, but when I went last week to check if the store was open, I discovered a) it was, but b) it closed super early. And now we're on a quote-unquote "lockdown" in Ontario. I mean, technically I can still go into a store to buy spray paint, the only restriction is 25% capacity, so *insert politics here*, but I intend to treat it as if it's something a bit closer to the actual lockdown it should be.

I have 10 Necron Warriors who are going to jump to the front of the queue once I get the primer, and I also have 10 Necron Warriors in the background there that I'm cutting off old-style guns and replacing them with Gauss Reapers. I haven't figured out quite HOW I'm doing that yet, but that's what's happening.

In the meantime, I did the wood and stone on the second batch of Chainrasps

If I want to expand this army, I'm gonna need another 10 Chainrasps at least, and some other troop choices. Though I do love painting Chainrasps.

Thanks Sigur! That was 100% my intention. The traditional "ghostly" nighthaunt are effective and WAY easier to paint, but I'm a fan of painting intricate details. Sometimes too much, I need to cut down on my palette on some other projects!

Speaking of cutting down on palette, I basically painted this guy in a single day.

introducing Deputy Taylor, a 10th Anniversary exclusive for Last Night on Earth. He starts the game with a shotgun, and is extra good at searching for new items. I painted him entirely monotone browns-and-khakis, which honestly was a lot of fun to come up with different ways to shade different parts.

Edit: I also updated the first post to have an index to all "completed" minis!

Yeah I think that was the issue. I tried doing it with a drybrush, but all my drybrush brushes are too thick and would make a mess elsewhere on the model, and I don't want to ruin my nicer, finer brushes by stabbing them into the model like that! I think next time I'll use the drybrushes anyways, and just accept that I'll have more cleaning up to do afterwards.

Not much progress to report, just a cleaned up the metal and threw a wash on. Not really noticeable tbh.

Thanks Olthannon and welcome to the blog! I'm glad you like the OSL, I've been doing a LOT of practicing to get it that smooth!

Thanks! It has a lot of promise, I have some /ideas/.

Of course, as this is a Death mini, got to keep my flesh cloth going! So here's the finished flesh, and base coat and wash on the armour. I am torn (ahahah) as to whether to add blood effects to the flesh this time. Thoughts?

The OBR is coming along nicely, they have some cool characters in their line-up.

Thanks Viterbi! They're really fun to paint too, the details make washes and contrast very effective.

Armour plates done! I really love this blue I got going here. Metallics base coated and washes. Decided that the handles should be gold, because otherwise there simply wasn't enough gold for a blue-and-gold scheme to work on a character model.

Thanks! I'm really happy I got the scratches nice.

I finished the metallics, but the scythe is looking way too rusty. I'm gonna have to go back to that.

Next, the GHOST! Which I've laid down the black-to-white transition that goes under the purple.

Easy update. Purple smoke magic effect. I decided that when there's a particularly prominent ghost face, it'll get the same bone that I use for my Nighthaunts' faces.

Thanks Clouds! I was worried that both blue and purple would be too busy, especially with all the warm yellows and oranges that dominate the rest of the model, but I think they're both close enough to just being "cool" that it works!

inmygravenimage wrote:Seriously cool, love the blades

Thanks graven! I'm still not quite happy with the blade, it's nice but it's not what I envisioned. Gonna change it when I do my basing.

Captain Brown wrote:Looking good Gwyn.

Thanks CB!

Last item (before I change the scythe blade) on the model itself, the little soul canisters! Spent a lot of time on them bringing them up through various shades of purple, all the way from a 50/50 Abaddon Black/Naggaroth Night through to pure Pallid Wych Flesh highlight. Pay special attention to the gem on his belt, I'm especially proud of that one!

Next is to fix the scythe blade, and do the base! I've decided no blood effects on him, to set him aside from the blood horror Nighthaunts. The Ossiarchs are a bit more refined, and they CLEAN their skin-cloth!

Not quite, though their bone is really easy to paint, and I did REALLY enjoy doing the blue armour. But I think if I pick up another Death army it's far more likely to be the new Soulblight.

The bone, blue and purple scheme works well on the Ossiarch to make the magic stand out and the body to have a nice undead feel to it. The highlighting and shading is nicely done as well. Very cool project.

Thanks TRoS. It's honestly the mini I'm most proud of right now.

Much less sure about the blue on the Namarti Thralls I just finished. Leviadon Blue contrast + macragge blue highlights. What else can I do to bring these up a bit in quality?

I really like the skin tones. How about either baharoth blue at the edges of the cloth or carbourg crimson wash to shade? I often shade blue cloth with red and vice versa.

Great start on the Namarti Thralls. What might help is pick out the elevated bits on the cloth in gold or a contrasting color. Otherwise I'm at a loss with ideas. But excited to see more.

Don't have carroburg crimson, I tried adding some red to my flesh wash, but I couldn't get it working right. I might have to look up a tutorial on how to work with it. I did a blue wash instead, which helped, and then I'll pick out more edges in Baharoth.

Viterbi wrote:Great start on the Namarti Thralls. What might help is pick out the elevated bits on the cloth in gold or a contrasting color. Otherwise I'm at a loss with ideas. But excited to see more.

Mmm, I considered the contrasting colour, but I want these minis to be very simple in scheme. Everything is either shades of cool blue, or gonna be warm oranges, brasses, bronzes. I don't want to risk that.

Fish elves! I agree that the blue still needs a little something, maybe just a tough of a lighter aqua blue on the details? I'm not sure.

Agree with the suggestions for a hit of lighter blue on some edges. The skin is nicely aquatic/sun-deprived. Looking forward to seeing the metallics added in.

Thanks youwashock! I'm working on metallics next, and there's gonna be a lot of really bright orange as well that should set off the cool skin and cloth.

Thanks Viterbi! It really did save the cloth.

Sneak peak at what I'm working at: Balthazar Gold, Drakenhof Nightshade wash, cleaning back up with Balthazar Gold. Really loving the scalloped armour, which you can see here. Will then edge highlight with Sycorax Bronze, and pinpoint the brightest spots with Runefang Steel.

Got up to that stage with all of them. Next is the Sucorax Bronze, which should take a while. Lots of detail in the armour to trace, so it might be a minute before you get the next update!

A hint in the background of the next colour that I’ll be laying down.
