Thanks gobert!
Switching back to some Necrons for a bit. These guys were already varying stages of metallically primed from the previous owners, so they already look decent with just the purple shoulders done!

The new Necron heads are so much more fun to paint, so much more character in them!

I know a slow trickle of grunts isn't exactly captivating blog-work, but it keeps me somewhat motivated so.
The best stage is always the green though. This is when they really turn into something real!

I like 'em, and slow and steady gets the job done.
That green motif you've got going isn't so much metallic glow (to my eye, anyways) as Mephistophelean flames. I forget which fantasy series had in it 'skeletons which 'flamed eerie green' but flames or metal glow, you've captured it well!

Good progress Gwyn, the green really does help them stand out super well. My plog is usually full of slow plodding through troops too, so no complaints from me! Keep em comin!

it's been a wild month: I don't recommend spreading a move out over two weeks, it doesn't lessen the stress it just means it takes more days.

Moving is always a pita! Good to see you’ve managed to finish up the Necrons in the new place, the first of many

Post by: ListenToMeWarriors
Yeah, moving is hell. Awesome Necron warriors, and you need to paint up the grunts as an excuse to paint the exciting bits.
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
Thanks all! They were really mostly painted at my old place, it just took me a while to get to them for the finishing touches. You know how it is.
And yeah, grunts before exciting bits. Speaking of, it's time to paint a character!
Specifically, Hasmoteph the Resplendent, the Necron Lord/Overlord with a Staff of Light and Resurrection Orb.
With these, I decided to play with some wet blending on the orb. I tried two different schemes. The first was a dark green swirl, but then I added yellow sparkles in it which I wasn't so happy with it.
After that I had the idea to try it as a dark purple nebula orb with white stars. Not convinced yet. Might go back to the dark green swirl with wet blending just without any dots. Thoughts?
Also, I did the vanes on the staff of light, which is the same in both versions. I'm not super happy with them, I want to go back and try and get a smoother wet blended transition between the colours and figure out my colour placement better. This is a character, he should have at LEAST as good blending on the blades as the Lychguard got!
123017
Post by: Olthannon
Moving sucks the big one, but at least the worst is hopefully done with!
I like the second orb, the night sky in the palm of their hand is a cool idea.
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
Thanks Olthannon!
Once the body is done up, I might do some purple OSL from the orb, which will be interesting with the green OSL coming from the staff...
Speaking of green, I got most of the green parts done up, excepting the staff of light vanes which I've reblacked to try again.

Thanks guys!
Did the bone faceplate and starting on the gold. This model is tricky with my scheme: how much purple and how much gold do I do for the face and chest? I’m unsure. Maybe the cartouches in gold but the rest in purple?
Edit: nooooooo I just saw the fleck of gold on the ball on the staff. Agghhhh
22619
Post by: inmygravenimage
I think purple within the gold swirls maybe? Head(s) look ace btw.
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
Thanks graven! I went with gold for the full ornate pieces. I think it'll work. Can always redo if it looks weird once I lay the purple down.
EDIT: Oh no, he's covered in dust from my sanding project! Guess I didn't do as good a job keeping that contained as I thought... I've been building a couple tables for my apartment.

I think you picked excellent colors for them to play off each other, the purple and the green energy.
The shot of the completed warriors shooting gauss is really cinematic.
What do you use was a wash/oil sort of thing over the metal?

Thanks ph34r! The metal is being washed with nuln oil first to darken the joints, then alternating agrax earthshade and seraphim sepia to get the dusty grimy look.
Of course, no grime for a Lord!
Metal is highlighted and washed up now. Just need to do the base, the OSL, and the varnish, and he's done!

I have an Apocalypse game with my Flesh Tearers coming up. How fast do you think I can paint my portion of the Imperium team?

Spicy. I see Flesh Tearers are getting a new novel, you must be excited?
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
You know I've never gotten into the novels or the lore side as much.
I did get that Apocalypse game in and boy was it a doozy!
I really quickly got base coats on all of the Captain I was working on:
I also very quickly did a couple key conversions.
I took my spare Bladeguard Lieutenant and turned him into a regular Primaris Ancient with a handy Blood Angels Banner:
And as soon as I clipped off that iron halo I thought to myself, "Well I still need a bunch of PL in my army what should I do..." then I looked over at my old Dark Vengeance Dark Angels Master with the wings on his helmet and inspiration struck.
Say hello to Gabriel Seth!
The rest of the army got base paints as fast as I could. I couldn't cover all the primer, but I got minimum 3 colours on everything (red, black, steel).
Here's everything divided into its 3 Apocalypse detachments! On the left is the firebase detachment. On the right is the heavy survivable detachment that shoots infantry and punches tanks. In the centre is the deadly mass, playing all the assault intercessors as Death Company for lack of Apocalypse rules (I heard tale of a fan-rule update for the 9th edition models though).
On to the table! On the Imperial side: the Angels of Death! We had 135 PL of Flesh Tearers, 135 PL of Blood Angels, and 135 PL of Dark Angels.
Opposing them, the dark forces of Tzeentch had corrupted a T'au Sept and manipulated a small Drukhari raiding party into joining their assault. Oh yeah. And they had a titan.
They had three (3) super-heavies: a Warhound Titan, an Atropos Knight, and the corrupted Stormsurge (I wish I knew his handle so I could give him cred, those Chaos T'au were just jaw-dropping). Plus Magnus and a Riptide. So yeah our 3 infantry-heavy armies had their work cut out for them.
Especially when the T'au deep-striked 2 Commanders, a Ghostkeel, some Crisis Suits, and... I can't remember what the last model was...right on our flank, forcing me to divert my Terminator/Gravis detachment to prevent them from stopping my friend's Blood Angels shooting detachment from taking on the Warhound.
In the centre, my other melee detachment tried to pin down the Drukhari from engaging the Dark Angels, but they had given their Warmaster a bubble of fall-back-and-shoot/charge, which meant they were able to just hop around me.
Eventually, that entire detachment was cut down except for the characters (the Titan just kept walking to our backline). Sadly, once the Drukhari counter-charged, only the Librarian was left.
We ended up losing 9-7 at the bottom of the third round. It was all of ours' first time playing Apocalypse, but it's a great game. We could have gone a lot faster if we knew the rules better, and we only actually played 5 hours including set-up.
We thought we were going to win when the other Blood Angels player deep-striked their Death Company and Sanguinary into the enemy rear line, stacking 2 brutal Blood Angels Command Assets on them (+6" move and +1A on the whole detachment is brutal, but when combined with the card that adds 2 additional hits to every Death Company hit...). Those guys quickly took their rear objective and merked one of their Warlords (which also counted as a VP for us). However we couldn't land a hit on the Warhound Titan so it survived with 1 wound remaining (denying us 3VP). A really clever move with the Atropos Titan took out both of the Dark Angels warlords (2VP for them there), and through a combination of a clever play (a venom darting in to a tiny gap in my formation so that my Terminator Captain, who was our Warmaster with the Warmaster ability that he could only be targeted as the closest model, was the closest model) and bad dice rolls (seriously, all I had to do was roll a 4+ on a d12, he only got a single small blast on him...) gave up another 3 VP. After that point, we had to call the game for time, but we were definitely on the backfoot.
It made me wish that Games Workshop had kept supporting Apocalypse. It really went smoothly for large team games. This was the culmination of a Crusade campaign (which opened up to some others such as me to fill space), and it worked really well. It was fast, engaging, and the back-and-forth strategy worked really well.

Thanks gobert! Though maybe not as soon: I'm doing an Age of Sigmar escalation campaign in the new year, so there will be a big fantasy focus coming up!
While I still debate what army to run, I've started painting up the current centrepiece of one of them: the Idoneth Deepkin Akhelian King! Such a good model, so satisfying to paint (but would have been MUCH easier to paint in sub-assemblies...)

Battle pics from the first two rounds of the tournaments!
The way this escalation league is set up is there are two rounds at each point level. At the 750 point level, each round is two games against the same opponent. So I did two games against the Nighthaunt to start, which consisted of both of us forgetting half our faction rules, and for some reason we played it on a 40k or kill-team map. The first game was basically a perfect Stormcast game; first, my turn 1 Annihilator charge out of deepstrike took out her entire Dreadscythe Harridan unit just from mortals.
Meanwhile my Vindictors got on each obejctive, and I barely lost any units after that.
The second game I didn't take photos of, but it was almost a perfect Nighthaunt game. Remembering that she could place units into deep strike, those Dreadscythe Harridans got a charge out of deepstrike, and almost entirely decimated my army when I was still in my own deployment zone. Technically I won the round because my score total across the two games was more than hers, but it was low compared to others who won the round, so solid middle-of-the-pack in the rankings after round 1.
Round 2 was against Slaves to Darkness (5 players are Slaves, 3 are Skaven, and another 3 are other Chaos factions..., so expect a LOT of Chaos opponents). I lost both games, but still scored fairly high in my second game. The first game my Annihilators failed their 7" charge even with rerolling charges, and that's just game right there. Plus, 9 wounds with a 2+ armour save REALLY doesn't last long against a unit of Chosen...
Second game was a lot better - Annihilators did decent damage to the Chosen before being, well, annihilated, and I played very conservatively, by not charging when I didn't need to to control a point. So I did well on points (partially because my opponent threw his Sorcerer forward, which was a fairly easy kill, but not well enough once a key Rally brought back a couple of Chosen and the Chosen once against ripped through my lines.
You can see my conservative play here: I just sat back to control point #2, which counted as two objectives, and I fell back/retreated from point 1 where the Chaos Warriors were to capture the point behind the tomb, because I didn't need to control Point 1 to get full points that turn, and I didn't want to risk losing models at that point.
I'm currently sitting at 14/24 going into the 3rd round at 1250 points, so wish me luck! Round 3 is against a Marauder Horsemen Cabalist list, so I'm intrigued. It does have another scary unit of Chosen. But first, gotta get up to 1250 points painted!

Thanks all! Yeah those Chosen were a real issue, but I have a plan at higher points levels.

Thanks for the kind words all! Here’s the 1250 pt army, ready for battle, with the addition of the 3 Praetors! I’ll get better shots of them soon.

Thanks wyomingfox! Yeah I have like 3-4 different swamp grasses or swamp flowers to add to them. I’m not doing that until a mini is totally finished though - all of these guys are only painted to base tabletop, they all need more detail work before I’m 100% done with them.

The step after this is a real doozie - I have 23 miniatures to paint to get from 1250 pts to 1750… but then that also takes me to 2000 with the same minis just on different configurations so
Anyhow, the proper unit shot of the Praetors, sorry for missing them earlier!

And on the table!
Round 3 was a 1250 battle against Slaves to Darkness (so much chaos...). I won this one 25-15, as the Knight Judicator just threw out so many wounds. My Chosen-hunter! Otherwise I was just able to play the objectives and retreat where I was overwhelmed to avoid losing models that didn't need to be lost.
After round 3, I was 7/24.
Round 4 was a 1250 battle against Maggotkin. Those guys are so tough and those mortal wounds from disease really hurt! We tied 17-17, tied again on grand strategy (he made the mistake of fighting in the big fight in his last turn before fighting my Gryphhounds, so my Gryphhounds were able to retreat and make sure they ended the game without disease points), but he got 1 more battle tactic than me so he won on the second tie-breaker.
Time to add more to the army!

I think only the Ogroids were Tzeentch, most of that army was Nurgle or Khorne iirc.

I mean, it does mean more things of the enemy alive next turn...

Thanks Olthannon! We got it printed and painted up special for this league.
Time to start building up to 1750k. First, a Knight-Relictor! This time with a fancy base!
121268

And a quick 1500 pt game trying out a combo against Slaves to Darkness. Lost, - the mission denied me my subfaction ability - but close still, and the combo was cool!

Thanks Not Online! No, it's from a GW set of scenic bases.
One archer-hero with a massive bow isn't enough, especially cuz he only hits on 3+. So clearly he needs some archer friends who also coincidentally give him +1 to hit!

Looks like the league is bearing fruit, loadsa minis your painting! The bowman looks good with their posse. That base is damn fancy

Ooooh, I know...
I did this entire model in approximately 2.5 hours from a zenithal prime.
Also, I actually took the glowing eyes to the full extent here - the others I only have put down the blue glow and not the white at the heart of the eyes that will really complete the glow. Eventually they'll all look like this!

So.
Army shot?
This is just over 2000 pts of Stormcast, and both my 1750 and 2000 pt lists in the escalation league are made out of these models. The only Stormcast I have left not here are 2 dragon boys, and a unit of Vanquishers, but I have some other plans for those Vanquishers...

I took some breaks while painting all of the above to build a couple Space Marine characters... who immediately got screwed by 10th edition lol.
Before 10th was announced, I decided I would build a Terminator Captain for use as a Death Company Captain. Well, not only is that not a thing anymore, but with the new-scaled Terminators I'm gonna have to take him apart, cut him up, and rebuild him!
Bursting through a wall into battle!
Wielding a dangerous chain-glaive (no idea what that is in-game now... guess I can more or less run it as whatever I want?)
I originally had another piece of the wall attached to his shield something like this, which made it clear that he was smashing through the wall, but it fell off and there's no point fixing it until I fix the Terminator's scale.
Tune in soon for the second character I built, in which I correctly predicted some aspects of 10th, but... not others...

Excellent animation to the vignette you set, good luck rescaling the figure for the new rules set.
To each his own, but it was the many changes to the rules to enhance sales that got me actively building 'Not Warhammer' Warhammer alternates. I hate to tell the kids "get off my lawn" but I started playing as Rogue Trader was transitioning to full-on Warhammer 40k. Back when we were making land speeders out of deodorant stick containers. A Rhino (which any Imperial faction could use, not just Space Marines) was 250 points, when most games were being played for 500 or less. The incentive was to buy the infantry models that the company was actually putting out. Then the Rhino model kit came out, and suddenly Rhinos were only 25 points to play in a game and a lot weaker than they had been before.
The point for me is moot really, as there is no place convenient to game. I'd like to get back into that side of things though, and admire you' ns that keep up with these things.
Rock on!

Love the terminator smashing through the wall, such a good pose. Good luck with the painting!
84491
Post by: gobert
Gotta agree with the others, the Captain smashing through the wall is cool! Have you considered a tactical rock to stand him on instead of giving him some more growth hormones? You could build the floor inside the building and steps going down outside to really add to the vignette
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
Thanks all! I think a tactical rock will help, but I'm gonna be doing some slice-and-dice regardless.
The second unit I built which 10th Broke was also, almost, a complete hit. I built me a Bike Captain out of an Outrider using a jet-bike conversion kit:
I was scared when I learned Characters were mostly going to be attached, because I don't have traditional Bike Squads, only Outriders. But then I got lucky and Bike Captains go in Outrider squads!
...and then I saw that, even though the index card has the stats for a thunder hammer on it, technically Bike Captains don't have the option to take one. So for now that hammer is gonna be run as other weapons. So close!

Post by: DJJazzyJeff
Both models look fantastic so far, even if they are not 10th-friendly.
I had the two Praetors from the Horus Heresy box cut up and ready to convert into a Company Ancient and a Techmarine. When 10th was getting close, I decided to just leave them on the desk and focus on my Tau army for 10th. I've only played one game so far, but I liked it. I'll look at all the Space Marine stuff eventually, but for now they are mostly on the shelf.
Good luck with the new rules/codexes.

Took my Necrons into a crusade battle against the Grey Knights. Very little died, but it was a mission with disappearing objectives and the ones which disappeared kept being mine! Still was closer at the end than I thought it would be.
Olynder in the centre was a mysterious anomaly the GK had accidentally awakened in their previous battle and which was hostile to both of us. It ended up mostly going after me until I captured it - an excuse to use Olynder as a Transcendental C’tan in my next battle!

Another Age of Sigmar battle. The map ended up fairly dense which made for some very interesting choke points.
The key photo is definitely this one, of my shield wall closing off a mountain pass defending an objective.

If I could figure out how to model sparks flying I would (I saw once someone do something fun with a clear sheet of plastic to show sparks being kicked up by a biker dragging his chainsword against the ground, but I can't find it now to link it). Alternatively if I had some more rubble I could have falling to show that his scraping the pillar is breaking it...
I'm kinda bumping around projects a little right now. My sister sent me this adorable mini to paint, and I've had a lot of fun learning how to paint fur effects on a smooth surface for it.

Well unfortunately I wasn't able to do OSL on the mouse in time for my sister's visit, and I didn't take any better photos, so that's all I got for the mouse! She still loved it though, and I'm very happy with the fur texture which was the real feature of the project. Maybe it's for the better anyways - OSL would have hidden some of the fur detailing.

Next up is a bunch of minis for the fantastic board game, Horrified! Gonna go through a few of them I think. Each one is a classic Universal Movie Monster.
First up is the Mummy:
119289
Post by: Not Online!!!
Great Job gwyn, what did you use for the bandages`?
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
The bandages were primarily Seraphim Sepia over a primer of Wraithbone, but then I went in with all sorts of off-white highlights and light-brown washes here and there so that some bandages would look more aged than others. Otherwise, the entire mini would just look... the same!
Next, up: Dracula! Modelled after Bela Lugosi's classic version (because of course, it's the Universal classic version).
I decided to keep his eyes in shadow, but from this angle I don't know if the shadows are dark enough for that to work. Thoughts? I feel like I could also benefit from a taaaad more shade on his lips.
84491
Post by: gobert
Spooky Gwyn! Nice cloak on Drac. I think you might be right on the shade for his eyes, it could also be expanded out to the sides too?

Yeah, definitely going back and fixing the eyes - will repost later once I do.
In the meantime, have a Wolf Man! Painted in the colours of a poster for the movie which I found online (which I'm now realizing was really more blue than green but oh well).

Last of the ones that I'm doing right now (the others will have to wait for another time).
Frankenstein's Monster!
This one was surprisingly simple. Based on a promo image from Boris Karloff's original Frankenstein, he's wearing all black! Nice and easy. Also, in the promo still, Boris' face is more yellow thangreen, so I aimed for a much more yellow-tinged green to differentiate from, well, all the other green I did in this project. Very happy with his yellow eyes as well!

Hi tzurk! You got it in one, we're doing catgutt's coconut crab spotted 'nids! I got the test model done up here (good enough that I'm happy with the scheme and my handle of the technique).
That's not contrast for the darker colours - a brown-black and a red-black (I can't remember the name, but it's a layer paint). Then I did contrast Skeleton Horde over it for the yellow portion. Quite happy!

121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
Catbarf has given such great guides and directions to doing his scheme, so I definitely can't take any design credit. But it is a very fun scheme to paint!
Did some bolder highlights on the carapaces (because why not spend way too long on horde minis), and the rest of hte shading and detailing (teeth, eyes, etc). I think the exposed muscles is a bit more subtle than I was aiming for, but not worth going back and redoing. I also tried to get subtly different shading on the gun body, the carapace, and the main body parts. Don't really think those differences came out as well as I wanted, but still.

Thanks everyone! I was aiming for more red-to-pink, but it's surprisingly hard to airbrush moss and stopping it from flying all over the place so it ended up much more pink/purple. Still looks good!
I definitely look forward to expanding my Tyranids.
But first, my Flesh Tearers need reinforcements. And because my goal isn't necessarily working towards an actually functional list, the next unit will be a group of Reivers with carbines.
I got these from a friend (hence the interesting range of heads) and did a little surgery to stick grapnels on their backs, and to get new arms on the sarge. Because the Sarge in this unit can have a carbine as well as a knife, he's gonna be hte one with the shooting grapnel while drawing his knife. These guys are black done, and next gonna do some other colours before I go back to the red, clean up any overspill, and highlight it.

Yup- Microsol, solvaset, etc are wonderful products!
I first got acquainted with them applying decals to the sides of model railroad cars (HO scale); as fine as the detail was on those- especially the rivets- you could get the decal to snug right down. Your application is so good you can't tell there is a decal present!
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
Thanks guys! Yeah I can't believe I was doing transfers with only water and varnish before like a madman.
Reivers are more or less finished. I didn't want to put as much effort into them, because... they're shooty reivers... are they really gonna hit the table anytime soon?
Flesh Tearers,10th Company Vanguard, Squad 1. I am actually pretty happy with the company/squad role badges. I put a black transfer on the black shoulder and then outlined it in white.

121268

Thanks Paddy! Nothing special on the OSL - I just do glazed shades, using more repeated layers and brighter layers closer to the light source. Maybe soon I'll experiment with using airbrushed OSL, but I'm still not very confident with the airbrush yet.
Finished warriors though!
The great painting journey continues...
84491
Post by: gobert
Cool warriors Gwyn, must be a sizeable Necron horde you have now.
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
Altogether I think I own about 5000 pts of Necrons (obviously not all painted, and a sizeable amount barely painted to Battle Ready). I also own about 4800 pts of Space Marines, but most aren't even Battle Ready yet.
Complete change up time. It's time to try out painting some sneaky marshy orks! I've done the skin, scars, and lips. You can see my one "block out the colours to see how it works" guy as well to see how the larger scheme will go; brown leather cloth, armour and weapons will be black drybrushed metallic, and the shields will be a dull red drybrushed metallic. Very excited to watch these develop!

Wow! They are coming together really quickly and looking most excellent too. Some of these new minis really are made for slapchop as you’re demonstrating so well.
Quite an impressive points haul on the Necrons (and space marines), seems like a good milestone for an army pic too?!
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
Thanks gobert! Actually I'm just finishing up touch-ups on a unit... I still have a lot that's only barely table-top playable, but maybe worth doing a "state of the army" post.
Gutrippaz are finished! I had so much fun with these. I played with some light water-effects for the first time to get some murky swamp puddles. I need to do more shaping to be able to do actual banks for the puddles to make them even more realistic next time.

State of the Necrons:
Top shelf:
My Monolith, Night Scythe/Doom Scythe (needs finishing), 10 Lychguard with scythes (now updated), 5 Lychguard with shields (need another 5), 20 Warriors with flayers, and Zandrekh and Obyron (need rebasing to use as generic Overlords; Obyron I might model some special effects around him to use him as an Overlord with Translocation Shroud), and an old Heavy Destroyer (which I need to rebase and then just use as a normal Lokhust Destroyer).
Middle shelf:
6 Canoptek Scarab bases (I have I think at least another 12 unpainted), 5 Deathmarks, 5 kitbashed Flayed Ones.
from the back: 10 Warriors with flayers (need rebasing to 32mm), 20 Warriors with reapers, 10 Immortals with tesla, 2 Cryptothralls, old Szeras model (need to repaint the staff replacement and then use him as whatever type of cryptek), and Lord Hasmoteph the Resplendent (Overlord with staff of light and reanimation orb).
Bottom shelf:
This shelf is pretty much all painted to just-below-battle-ready (I don't like putting basing materials on until I'm not gonna be splashing paint around because I find it difficult to tidy up on those surfaces).
Ghost ark, 2 Lokhust Destroyers, Lokhust Heavy Destroyer with gauss, 3 Wraiths (need rebasing), a damaged Reanimator, 5 Tesla Immortals, 5 Gauss Immortals, and a pile of characters. Imotekh, Orikan, Plasmancer, Chronomancer, Technomancer, an old Cryptek model, a Royal Warden, and 4 Overlord models (one off-camera to the left, oops, but it's just the classic voidscythe model, nothing fancy).
Oh, and a Nightbringer proxy.

I like your Necron force. It's a pain and a shame having to re-base so many of them for current rules.
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
I don't have super high motivation to do most of the rebasing - I have a large number of properly based Warriors, and 3 Wraiths isn't much on the tabletop, need a block of 6 to make it worth it, so...
Speaking of having a large number of properly based Warriors.
Let's paint another 10.
Primed silver and purple done. This time, put a few old Scarabs as basing decoration (to use them up, more or less).

I'm in a Crusade league right now running Silver Tide themed Necron lists. At 1000 pts I was running 40 warriors. The challenge is how high can I push it without completely losing.

It's hard to make Necrons look really interesting IMHO, but you did a great job making them look interesting. I like your color choice.
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
Thanks Shadows and Dust! The challenge is finding a scheme which has points of interest but isn't too visually complicated for what are at their core simple models (battle damage on the new warrior sculpts notwithstanding). I still iterate on how to do the purple panels.
Time for a break though; back to Tyranid land!

Thanks CB! At this point they're pretty rote, but I find enough little areas to focus on to have fun on them.
Surprisingly these Tyranids are flying by. Just some detailing and basing left I think.

Thanks Mothsniper!
I normally do contrasting bases, but with 'nids that have a camouflaging scheme, it made more sense to put them in an environment where that scheme makes sense.
Moving on; Radukar the Wolf from Cursed City! My Soulblight scheme is going to be red and green (patterned after the box art for Radukar, but it does work well). Colour placement will be inspired by 18th century Russian military uniforms (which was clearly also the inspiration for Radukar's box art).
This is the pants almost done, and the green cloak started.
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
Good progress on the green cloak, and largely done the skin. Started the various leather items, and a start on the beard (though I think I'm gonna go change it from blonde to brown).
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
Few more highlights, starting the gold, starting the wolf. Skin is finished and bloody gashes done. Sword rust is started - I'll go over it with metallic so only the pitted area looks rusted out.
I'm loving this guy.

Thanks graven! It's much better than previous cloaks I've done - I think part because I like my colour palette more for this cloak!
Adrassil wrote:Nice blog, Gwyn! Liking those Flesh Tearers especially. You'll be a true master of OSL when all those Necrons are done, lol.
Thanks Adrassil! My OSL technique is still very primitive, but I find it effective enough for my purposes.
Tommygun1918 wrote:Nice work on the whites on that Radukar mini.

It is, with some light grey drybrushing and I think I did some thinned nuln oil in spots to change up the consistency.
I liked doing this vamp enough to do a second!

Thanks all! Sorry for being AWOL the last month or so. Little vacation and then starting a new job ate up a lot of time.
Meanwhile, I am moving on to doing 20 - TWENTY - hobgrotz.
Wish me luck. I did a simplified version of the complicated skin I did on the full orruks though, because I'm not insane. I never liked the yellow-skin hobgrotz either, so I went with a slightly more yellow-tinged green.

Skin looking good on those gobbos. There are so many AoS models that I don't know!
The green on the vampires is gorgeous. This is probably a weird compliment but it is the least Christmassy red-green combo I've ever seen, really suits her and pops against the armour (which looks amazing by the way - the way you've highlighted with pure white plus the dark shadows really makes it seem metallic).
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks tzurk! Hahaha thank you for the compliment! I was worried about the red-and-green being too christmassy, but figured if I got the tones and shades right it would be ok.
Meer_Cat wrote:Man- they're already looking good!

This is contrast and a wash, very limited highlights.
gobert wrote:Hope you had a good holiday. You’ve made Good start on the grots

Got the metallics started. Keeping with the same scheme as my Gutrippaz; black for most things, metallic red for spot colour (in this case, the grenade heads and the banners). With the main colours blocked in, this is more or less the big-picture of what the unit scheme will look like.

Thanks! It's slow going. 20 minis is too many. Not doing this level of batch again.
Decided that despite that I would go back to the skin and add more depth, and especially do the pink highlights on the mouth which worked so well on the full size orruks.

gobert wrote:Looking good Gwyn! The red on the lips is great, what was your recipe?
Thanks gobert! The lips are taking the flesh recipe, doing a 25/75 Warboss Green/Zandri Dust layer to lighten them, then Volopus Pink contrast to redden them, then Kislev Flesh highlight to lighten again, then Reikland Fleshshade wash to redden again, then a Volopus Pink contrast just on the gums and inside the mouth to bring those to a nice warm darkness. I did a similar recipe on the horn-blower's cheeks, just to a lesser extent, as below.
Cap'n Facebeard wrote:They look suitably nasty
Thanks Cap'n!
blockade23 wrote:I would not want to be facing them in any type of combat myself!
Tbh they're probably my least favourite of all the Kruleboyz units but eh. Though the ability to freely retreat from combat at the end of any turn and and do a mortal when they do is nice.
Here's the hornblower, almost finished. Got the blue tarnish down. Now 19 more to go!

Thanks all! I am going to enjoy doing the rest of these orcs over time.
Next project is a quick little side project. I had a small group of Necron Warriors that were only half-painted, so we're bringing them up to snuff.

Post by: blockade23
The satisfaction that comes from clearing things that are half done (and half remembered) is so very sweet (Less so the feeling of looking into the project boxes and realizing how many things you have half remembered). Loving the purple on the Necrons.
Do you use any tool to track your progress on painting items? I use Kanbanflow and I really like it (although I can forget to keep updating it sometimes, so then I add like fifteen things to the 'to build' category and feel very defeated.)
84491
Post by: gobert
Good to see the Necrons returning, the purple and green always looks so good. Maybe I should paint up a few warriors next too
@blockade, I love that you’re using a kanban tool! I’ve tried pileofshame.com but got fed up loading everything in. My Space Marines have a spreadsheet broken down to Built, Primed, Painted. But that is more about building the rig by loadouts to fit my plans
121268
Post by: Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll
Thanks guys!
I actually just keep an excel file of all to-do items, which I also use to randomly decide what my next project is. I weight them by how-close-to-done they are; the further they are from done, the more likely they are to be up next. Also weight by model count, so that large units (which are otherwise not exciting to do) are more likely to come up, so that when a monster, vehicle, or character comes up, it's a treat!
Green is done, started OSL on one of them before I realized I needed to do basing before I could do OSL!

Looking good Gwyn, I hate it when I forget a step, throws me off balance for a while.
Using your spreadsheet to choose what next is a good idea. Mine doesn’t have that functionality but I’d probably go the other way around and finish whatever is closest to being done for that endorphin rush!
Good luck with their OSL
