Thanks graven! I went with gold for the full ornate pieces. I think it'll work. Can always redo if it looks weird once I lay the purple down.

EDIT: Oh no, he's covered in dust from my sanding project! Guess I didn't do as good a job keeping that contained as I thought... I've been building a couple tables for my apartment.

Dusted him off and laid on the purple now! He's now at least base-colour complete, and can confirm that I like how this worked.

I think you picked excellent colors for them to play off each other, the purple and the green energy.

The shot of the completed warriors shooting gauss is really cinematic.

What do you use was a wash/oil sort of thing over the metal?

Thanks Olthannon! I'm happy with this go at it.

Thanks ph34r! The metal is being washed with nuln oil first to darken the joints, then alternating agrax earthshade and seraphim sepia to get the dusty grimy look.

Of course, no grime for a Lord!

Metal is highlighted and washed up now. Just need to do the base, the OSL, and the varnish, and he's done!

Nice job on the Necron lord! Really nice glossy liquid effect on the orb. The effects you used on the staff in particular are brill.

Thanks guys! I'm happy with him.

I have an Apocalypse game with my Flesh Tearers coming up. How fast do you think I can paint my portion of the Imperium team?

Let's start with a little someone to lead my shooty-infantry detachment. Here's an old guy!

Thanks Graven! I got 2 of these guys. This is the unbroken one, the other one was missing some parts. Don't know when I'll get around to doing a proper job on him, but we'll see.

Black is almost done and started the gold. In the background I'm also going crazy trying to get just the basic colours on an entire 135 PL portion of a team Apocalypse battle, wish me luck.

You know I've never gotten into the novels or the lore side as much.

I did get that Apocalypse game in and boy was it a doozy!

I really quickly got base coats on all of the Captain I was working on:

I also very quickly did a couple key conversions.

I took my spare Bladeguard Lieutenant and turned him into a regular Primaris Ancient with a handy Blood Angels Banner:

And as soon as I clipped off that iron halo I thought to myself, "Well I still need a bunch of PL in my army what should I do..." then I looked over at my old Dark Vengeance Dark Angels Master with the wings on his helmet and inspiration struck.

Say hello to Gabriel Seth!

The rest of the army got base paints as fast as I could. I couldn't cover all the primer, but I got minimum 3 colours on everything (red, black, steel).

Here's everything divided into its 3 Apocalypse detachments! On the left is the firebase detachment. On the right is the heavy survivable detachment that shoots infantry and punches tanks. In the centre is the deadly mass, playing all the assault intercessors as Death Company for lack of Apocalypse rules (I heard tale of a fan-rule update for the 9th edition models though).

On to the table! On the Imperial side: the Angels of Death! We had 135 PL of Flesh Tearers, 135 PL of Blood Angels, and 135 PL of Dark Angels.

Opposing them, the dark forces of Tzeentch had corrupted a T'au Sept and manipulated a small Drukhari raiding party into joining their assault. Oh yeah. And they had a titan.

They had three (3) super-heavies: a Warhound Titan, an Atropos Knight, and the corrupted Stormsurge (I wish I knew his handle so I could give him cred, those Chaos T'au were just jaw-dropping). Plus Magnus and a Riptide. So yeah our 3 infantry-heavy armies had their work cut out for them.

Especially when the T'au deep-striked 2 Commanders, a Ghostkeel, some Crisis Suits, and... I can't remember what the last model was...right on our flank, forcing me to divert my Terminator/Gravis detachment to prevent them from stopping my friend's Blood Angels shooting detachment from taking on the Warhound.

In the centre, my other melee detachment tried to pin down the Drukhari from engaging the Dark Angels, but they had given their Warmaster a bubble of fall-back-and-shoot/charge, which meant they were able to just hop around me.

Eventually, that entire detachment was cut down except for the characters (the Titan just kept walking to our backline). Sadly, once the Drukhari counter-charged, only the Librarian was left.

We ended up losing 9-7 at the bottom of the third round. It was all of ours' first time playing Apocalypse, but it's a great game. We could have gone a lot faster if we knew the rules better, and we only actually played 5 hours including set-up.
We thought we were going to win when the other Blood Angels player deep-striked their Death Company and Sanguinary into the enemy rear line, stacking 2 brutal Blood Angels Command Assets on them (+6" move and +1A on the whole detachment is brutal, but when combined with the card that adds 2 additional hits to every Death Company hit...). Those guys quickly took their rear objective and merked one of their Warlords (which also counted as a VP for us). However we couldn't land a hit on the Warhound Titan so it survived with 1 wound remaining (denying us 3VP). A really clever move with the Atropos Titan took out both of the Dark Angels warlords (2VP for them there), and through a combination of a clever play (a venom darting in to a tiny gap in my formation so that my Terminator Captain, who was our Warmaster with the Warmaster ability that he could only be targeted as the closest model, was the closest model) and bad dice rolls (seriously, all I had to do was roll a 4+ on a d12, he only got a single small blast on him...) gave up another 3 VP. After that point, we had to call the game for time, but we were definitely on the backfoot.

It made me wish that Games Workshop had kept supporting Apocalypse. It really went smoothly for large team games. This was the culmination of a Crusade campaign (which opened up to some others such as me to fill space), and it worked really well. It was fast, engaging, and the back-and-forth strategy worked really well.

That apocalypse game looked like great fun Gwyn! Good work getting the 3 colours down on your minis, should help them get painted up in the not too distant future. Just like their dapper Captain! The Seth conversion worked nicely btw

Thanks gobert! Though maybe not as soon: I'm doing an Age of Sigmar escalation campaign in the new year, so there will be a big fantasy focus coming up!

While I still debate what army to run, I've started painting up the current centrepiece of one of them: the Idoneth Deepkin Akhelian King! Such a good model, so satisfying to paint (but would have been MUCH easier to paint in sub-assemblies...)

I still don't learn though: for some reason I hate having unbuilt models...

Thanks Syro! The OSL makes a difference in making an old model look modern I think here.

More work on the King! Turned my attention to the Deepmare. First off, getting a nice skin-to-belly transition.

Thanks wyomingfox! I'm trying to play around with a mix of cool and warm tones here which hopefully works.

Exactly! I guess it's because my meta doesn't mind the occasional grey plastic on the table, but if it's not assembled I can't bring it to a game...

Olthannon wrote:Lovely stuff Gwyn. I like the blue on the sea creature.

Thanks Olthannon! The good news is, there's a lot more blue on the sea creature yet to come!

Did a bunch of work on the scales... like a LOT of work. Scales take forever! Cancelling any plans for a Seraphon army rn.
