Board is looking really good already, impressive progress.
Those chaos army schemes bring up middlehammer memories, looking forward to seeing what you have to work with. Not envious of the size of the project however
It’s starting to look even more beautiful Steve, the crane tower looks cool. 8 armies is a lifetimes work for us mortals! How many minis are we talking?
gobert wrote: It’s starting to look even more beautiful Steve, the crane tower looks cool. 8 armies is a lifetimes work for us mortals! How many minis are we talking?
Around 220 minis or so plus cultists and vehicles. If they're smaller lists of marines it should be a blast painting a stack of different schemes. I can roll the money from painting these armies into capital for YouTube/more hobby stuff. I'll give away at least 2 of the armies.
The terrain looks cracking! Not sure what corners you cut, but the weathering and flocking must be doing a good job of hiding it. Can’t wait to see the rest of the board develop.
Where are the 2 metal interlopers from? They look quite different to the plastic chaps
Not sure where the two metal lads are - in anycase I've changed up that squad's color scheme. Right now its white grey camo, red cables, green armor plates, leather brown helmets, and green googles. Similar to the HEV Marines from Half Life
Latest terrain looks absolutely gorgeous as ever, and thanks for sharing.
As to the phrase "Heavy weathering is saving me the effort to make this white look good." I think you have it the wrong way around! The weathering is making it look so good!!
Wow, this terrain and your stormtroopers look great! At first I thought the guy in the trench coat was going to be just a cluster of servo skulls in a jacket. I'm almost sad there's actually somebody wearing that coat, lol.

I'm currently unhappy with the dude INSIDE THE CLOAK and you may have given me an idea. Maybe if he gets killed in the campaign he becomes an inspector gadget of sorts and mostly is mechancius skulls in a cloak!
Thanks for the comments! it's appreciated! Idk terrain is what makes this game fun. I was really sad about how Warmachine ended up.
Wow! They look great stalking about your new terrain. The digital camo style looks cool, but the use of green as a tertiary on the chest and forearms seems off given the camo is grey. I suppose lots of Armies the world over use whatever couloir armour they have so why not the imperial guard in the 41st millennium
Thanks! It's more dot camo than digital but it was easier than expected. I could add more black chest armor later on for other units. I was specifically going for this style:
Inspiration from the HEV marines
and the work right now on this quick one day piece. No airbrush here
I love the mix match of camo. Whenever I saw it worn properly 'in country' it was always a random mix - so I think it is a great look for a bit of mix and match with the kevlar v camo colours
IGtR= wrote: I love the mix match of camo. Whenever I saw it worn properly 'in country' it was always a random mix - so I think it is a great look for a bit of mix and match with the kevlar v camo colours
And they look fab in the scenery.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks! Yeah I have two veteran squads to paint, some Reaper minis as Ogryrns, and 10~ or so INQ characters. I collected 3 Chimeras as well and a Valk for transporting these fellows
I thin I can manage painting a building every 1-2 days painting so I'll chug along for another week or two
Next weekend I have a 24 hour challenge with a youtuber. Should be fun
Tyranid Horde wrote: All of that is awesome, I really like how you've gone for an overgrown styling rather than just a grey blasted landscape.
I'm actually going for the same scheme as my Dropzone Board at this point. They grey + green of Stalker / Shadow of Chernobyl is what I'm going for. I'll have less greens on the flat boards. The graffiti will be wild to make it POP
Yeah I never much liked grey ash/fallen building cities (and I've built one of those already)
Thanks! These should be done tomorrow! I just have to wash + highlight + flock
Then I have a terrain competition 24 hour challenge with a talented terrain maker this weekend. The rest of the photos are on the camera and I'll upload them in a bit
Its so hard not to work on other projects. I just need to stomach the 80-100 hours
I do have a quick single mini to paint this weekend (Darius the Blue from Reaper Minis) but I just need to focus on the table. Then it's INQ + CSM + Traitor Guard right out of the gate
I'm finishing off the graffiti walls I stopped halfway through right now. Should be a few hours only to finish those.
gobert wrote: They look fantastic! Is tower 6 supposed to be by the hole in the wall?!?
Actually yeah
I'd like to make more of those later on but they look much more sturdy than the walls. These thin walls were supposed to be more of a star ship troopers sort of temporary concrete wall and not super thick.
I'm in total awe. If I have one slight criticism, it's that your roads seem very... Intact! Do you have craters or broken sections you can use as overlays?
inmygravenimage wrote: I'm in total awe. If I have one slight criticism, it's that your roads seem very... Intact! Do you have craters or broken sections you can use as overlays?
The roads are only primed right now so they're unpainted
Yeah so the style in which I'm going to paint them will be a heavy sponge/weathered look to blend in the table + craters/debris
In most cases I'll actually just place terrain over the roads then
Okay so I'm starting the washes after work - I drybrushed the ground up to a Bleached Bone equivalent on the entire table and then sponged all the white to look like this
Going to do a really rally thin green wash, a super thin orange wash, and a random brown wash and pat it down with a paper towel a few times with a blow dryer.
gobert wrote: The boards looking great Steve! Am I right in thinking that some of the road pieces will be removable to reveal a canal underneath?
That was an original idea but I only kept that for the industrial 2x2 corner tile. You can have an open Canal for Necromunda or you can place grating over it
I have 2 other boards I started that are flat to make it a 6x8 for the Ruined Warhound Titan center piece and the chaos castle (I'm sitting on a few unpainted chaos armies in queue right now)
I think I'm going to skip the static grass and foilage on the entire board so I don't make the table too bright and I'm lazy.
I think I'll water effects the dark track of dirt on this piece as a puddle. Not too sure. Next steps:
Chrome metal highlights, brown wash/fix edges of my messy copper, wire highlights / red wires, black pen graffiti more, green stowage and crate highlights x3 up, red barrel chipping highlight / blue barrel highlights. Beige stowage + beige crate drybrush, pigment asphalt and some areas
I love the level of partially buried debris you have on this board. It's very wastelandy. Excellent execution overall and I love that it's still a work in progress.
Love your work. This thread reminds me of an old thread I had on a different forum about 5 years ago. I alos used to build crazy gaming tables with lot of details.
The best thing with building tables in pieces is that you can expand it later. My gaming table ended up with a lenght of 7.2 meters. Stretching from trenches to light cityfight to dense cityfight, with the possibility to put a lagre fortress wall in the middle to split the tabel in half.
I hope you keep the motivation up and raise the bar a notch for each new project.
I think this is one of my favourite things on Dakka right now! These water effects turned out so good, do you colour the fx fluid in some way while/before pouring?
MobileSuitRandom wrote: I think this is one of my favourite things on Dakka right now! These water effects turned out so good, do you colour the fx fluid in some way while/before pouring?
I tried and it made bubbles (dry pigments + heat from the flame I think added bubbles instead of removed.... or it made the pigments rise)

just found this and slowly going through it but some fantastic stuff there, as a fan of predator i really like what you have done with the model especially the wound
These are NOT THE FINAL photos. It was not damaged in transit and will be at the NOVA next. Since we missed armies on parade we'll try for next year. We're trying to get a photo shoot in a forest/out doors. I live in a city and didnt get the lighting correct inside since I broke one of my huge LED standing lights. These are straight up bad photos - but for now anyway:
They look pretty good for bad photos excellent work Steve, lots of great touches as usual. The grass tufts on the helmets of some of the skeletons being my favourite example!
Spent a few hours working on some table top quality new scheme test. I dont want to spend more than 4 hours so I'm finishing the face and the swords and calling it
really stunning work on the castle Stevefamine - the individual brick technique takes forever but produces great results. It also has the tall + skinny profile of buildings in WH Fantasy artwork, lends a feeling of grandeur but also a certain looming sense of doom, like you expect it to topple over at any second.
nice work on the IHs too. Like the white backpacks on the heavy squad, makes the weathering pop.
So it's going to be two really smaller forces. Not for any particular game. They're left over pendraken sci fi minis from an old STALKER game and micromachine tanks cheap off eBay
Primer first coat went poorly. It was the hand primer from Tamiya white paint primer over some mod podge'd sand. I'm going to do a quick layer of a bone color now with an airbrush coat
Illumini wrote: Cool little project, I enjoy a little smaller scale project from time to time myself.
This is the same scale as your dropzone commander board?
Yes! same scale
Next up I have a few projects I can dive into - nearly all 40k related.
I planned on a sort of escalation leagues of painting an army slowly over time.
February Plan:
- Get a game in locally as shops are opening back up
- Have the Dune video finished and upload around 6 Talking about Terrain mini-podcasts
- Paint these lads up all month
Traitor Guard: The Baron's Brigade Beige Khakis with rusted metal plates and gear. Red will be the color used for unit leaders, tanks, rebreathers, and so on. I do not plan on highlighting these tanks if possible. The Turrets will be white on the tanks but heavily corroded. The special weapons and weapons will have random coloring or some green equipment as if it is all second hand.
- Leman Russ
- Hell Hound
- 5x Command
- 20x Infantry
- 3x Heavy Bolter Teams
+ Paint the Broken Wall terrain piece with the ruined Hell Hound
Wow, that castle is so awesome And the "bad" pics really show off all the attention to detail on the grounds around it. Just amazing work and your new stuff already looks cool and I'm excited to see it develop!
That lit up Dune scenery piece is just amazing! Great job and love the shots with the minis around it, gives a nice sense of scale, if it would be real. And gotta echo Gwyn, that Nid is more than scary
inmygravenimage wrote: Colour palette looks superb, and Iike the way that devourer looks like it's nibbling leaves
Thanks!
Alright now for the next order of operations I have:
- Gaunts = basecoat bleached bone, highlight teeth and eyes, repaint carapace, gloss, base rim edges black and tufts
- Big Bugs = Rehighlight white on some stones, brighten the leaves on the bases 1 highlight and also wash the plants a deeper green in the crevices, paint the skin, teeth, eyes on the carnifexs and tyrants
- Extra: Red and Blue Barrels and the broken fence on the tyrants base. Might use pigments on these bases - unsure. Was thinking veins on wings in purple? could look bad
Short term for this week:
Finish highlights, teeth, eyes, gloss, and base on 3 CarnifexDONE
I estimate the Carnifexs are about 3 hours to finish each and the Flyrants are 4 hours to finish each. I'll post the finished first refurbished Carnifex tonight or tomorrow.
Now I need to grind through the gaunts this entire week.
I don't want to paint the flyrants until I actually want to use them in a game or know their load out. I might magnetize the flyrant. I have a ton of projects I can work on but I'm hype to play my nids
Nids look amazing and that group shot with the little buggers immediately made me itchy... job well done And love the last pic, looks so great with those monsters stalking the city.
Thanks Gravenimage! I'm going to finish Screamer Killer #3 today and maybe one of the flyrants this weekend. I really want to marathon the rest of my bugs since I'm on a roll now
That's one good thing about no events/no commissions. I'm on the fence about attending the NOVAGT this year... I have a friend that wants me to go but I'm far too rusty
Gameplan for the Warriors:
- Higher quality than the Carnifex Quality which was a bit low
- Each one is slightly different but has about the same loadout
- I'm not using the meta 2x Bonesword options on the warriors since I don't think the bitz look good. Scyth Tal + Deathspitter and some VCs - Metal old Warriors are going to be the heavy weapon Warriors
- Prime is a converted Metal tyrant Guard from 3rd edition - I'll build him tomorrow
I burned out on painting bugs, I didnt finish 3 carnifexs, 6 raveners, 40 termagants, 1 more tyrant, the warrior prime and a few others but I'm not going to unless I need to bring them for a game.
I took some bad photos by accident. I messed up my camera settings I assume after looking at them
Yes, renegades! They are also really great for doing conversion work, as their rag-tag nature lends them just as well as orks for using anything to fight.
Your bronkorpus tank looks great even before paint
I assume I'll grab the new cultists and mix them in. I can technically play Guard and the new Traitors!
This is the next big big project
At one point I'll build an extension to my 40k board but for now I think I'll cruise through a few small armies
These are the test models...
The Baron’s Brigade
A Traitor Guard Army for Warhammer 40,000
This regiment is part of the Blood Pact assigned to the leader of the brigade, the Baron. The Baron is a short-served position within the Brigade due to how often these champions of Khorne die in the field. It’s rare to see the current Baron not leading the push into the enemy’s front lines. Dozens of Barons are elevated during every campaign the Baron’s Brigade has been involved with. After the 4th Jupairian regiment was routed on Herron IV the remaining survivors drank the blood that rained upon the world after the forces of the Iron Warriors and the World Eaters Chaos Space Marines conquered the planet after a swift campaign. Barely an eighth of the survivors were rounded up and conscripted into the newly formed Baron’s Brigade to assist Khorne in future campaigns. The survivors were well fed and given blood signed contracts. A heated haze surrounded the men as if they were in a jungle. Their inner animalistic nature was brimming at the rim. This was held at bay by their cruel masters. The Red Command ruled with absolute authority. Mistakes were met with death. Honorable or not; the blood debt was paid.
The Baron’s Tactics
The Brigade is comprised of 4 wings. These wings are each an element of a combined assault plan. Their Khorne masters do not simply throw the Blood Pact into the meat grinder. That is for his lesser minions and the religious masses. The Baron’s Brigade serves the Blood Pact by being an effective spearhead into Imperial lines.
Red Command 3 Commissars models~
Command Squad with Flag Vraks~
Melta Command Squad?
Commander with a Command Squad in 1 Chimera Stracken/Yarrick for fun?
Baronguard 30 in 3 Chimeras with 3 Missile Launchers and 3 Plasma Guns
30 Infantry with 3 Heavy Bolters
6 Mortar Teams (Fun unit, I had the models)
Burndogs... not really planned out yet Hellhounds? 1 Sentinel?
I'd want to paint this in 3 phases. Handle the test models above, then crush through the tanks all at once, and finish with the infantry at the end. I can probably do it starting now in May to finish by July 4th if I plan it out correctly.
Cool looking cultists! Also, I know it's not supposed to be the focal point of the shot, but really good work on the veins on the psyker's head. Really solid effect.
Black Guns Black Hoods is the plan sir! The Black Hood + Green Lenses is a cool idea I like. Burned out with painting a bit now but I'll get into it this week.
I got a small mini commission ahead! It's some photo backdrops for an OSR / Older D&D homebrew rulebook. Basically the rules writer in the project is the sculptor for a set of minis. I'll add some terrain for photography backdrops for the book. I've purchased some terrain crate stuff.
I had some hobby burn out with the Traitor Guard project so that is on the backburner. The good news is that 80 or so infantry are built and the I only have 2 unbuilt vehicles. Whenever I do return to the project I just have to prime and start painting.
To get my mojo back I want to work on 3 short term projects now:
1) Iron Hands Vindicator
2) The Dungeon Backdrop mini commission mentioned above
3) Sci Fi Medical Building (A large 3 story hospital type building) with a massive footprint. Centerpiece LOS blocking terrain
The final "Summer Project" is going to involve the 4x4 extension to my table to make it a 12x4 or a 6x8. It's 2 mostly flat 2x4 tiles. During this I will also create a walled fortress piece as some of my graffiti wall terrain was damaged recently. I'll use the damage pieces and kitbash a new LOS blocking piece.
I SHOULD be painting minis but right now I sort of only want to paint terrain. I'll try and do a squad or a tank per month. The gaunts burned me good
Thanks! Yeah had nearly 2 months off. Had years of productivity grind to a halt. Got a few games in and my necks a bit better. Current work queue:
Short Term 1) Iron Hands Vindicator
2) The Dungeon Backdrop mini commission shown above
Warhammer 40,000 Projects that are in various states of completion:
- A Khorne related Traitor Guard army (Unsure on the scheme; lack of motivation)
- World Eaters with the new Codex
- Inquisition Ordo Hereticus with Grey Knight Allies (IG/Stormtroopers with GK Allies)
- Warhound Titan (Chaos)
Terrain Plans: - A large 3 story ruined medical building
- More line of sight blocking sci fi structures for my table. Considering MDF terrain
- Add a 4x4 section to my table
Absolute Backburner Projects 2023: - D&D Projects (I'm not a DM right now and play in another group. If I DM again I have 100+ minis to paint)
- MageKnight metals + army painters edition 100 Models~
- Age of Sigmar Chaos
- Tyranids: 6 Raveners, Harridan, Hierophant, Malanthrope, Rippers, Gaunts, OOE, Carnifex Magnetized x3, Tyrants. (I'll paint these as I need them for events)
