Woof! There's a ton going on in here! Love the Custodes. The Captain is just fabulous. The kit bashing on the Dark Eldar is great. The masks work really well on the Wyches. 6 to go!

Woah, you’ve been busy fixing up the combat patrols! The Dark Eldar may not have been inspiring but they look cool all painted up. The golden boys are splendid though, a very regal bunch ready to kick ass!
I’m hoping we get to see all of the Combat Patrol army shots when you get them all done… maybe even a great big Battle Royale shot too?

Thanks very much, I'm always amazed how a headswap can change the models.

I definitely want to get some better photos of all of the combat patrols once done. I'll take the time and try and set up a proper space to photo them, including the larger ones that won't fit in my little lightbox.

I know this is a P&M blog, but would people be upset if I put some brief battle reports of the Combat patrol throwdown? I realised with 32 of them there's going to be 31 matches overall, so it's going to take me a while to get through them, so I could probably start with the ones I have finished, and hopefully finish the others before they have their bouts

Although that would require me to learn the current rules, and have somewhere suitable to play, which leads onto this:

I need some scenery to be able to play on, and that includes things to block line of sight, so here's the first (of probably many) "storage tanks". I'm trying to work out how much scenery I need to fill a combat patrol board (44"x30"). I've got five or six of the shipping containers from GW, I'll print out probably another 3 or three of these, and I'm going to make some pipes (out of 3d printed stands and well... plastic pipes ). I think I'll build that first and see what the board is like afterwards.

On a unrelated note, because I get distracted easily as soon as a project is getting even close to finished, and the weather has been terrible so I haven't been able to prime anything, I thought "If I've got an army for each faction in 40k, what am I going to do next?"
And the obvious answer...
"Do the same thing for AOS..."
Sometimes I hate how I think .

Now this is going to get long, so if you want to grab a cup of coffee and a snack, now is a good time.

Queue me working out how many factions there are in AOS, 25, and how they're broken up:
Order: 9
Chaos: 8
Destruction: 4
Death: 4

Now 25 isn't that far off 32, and that could be 8 per Grand Alliance to make it fair...
Here we go again...
So order loses one, I'm not sure who yet...
Chaos get's to take theirs (the 4 gods, beasts, skaven, slaves to darkness and Legion of the first prince)
Destruction gets Gloomspite gits, (Gitz, Spiderfang and Trogg horde),Orruks (Bonesplitters, Ironjawz, Kruleboys), Ogor Mawtribe, Sons of Behemat,
Death gets Flesh eater courts, Nighthaunt, Ossiarch bonereapers, Soulblight gravelords (One Legion of blood, one Cursed city based) and 3 more.

From a quick search it looks like 750 points is the AOS equivalent to Combat Patrol, and has the following limits, 1-2 Characters, 1+ battleline, 0-1 Artillery, 0-1 Behemoth, 0-1 reinforced unit.
So fairly tight limits.
Taking stock of what I've already shown, I've got the Stormcasts (here) Kharadron (here) and Maggotkin (here), so nearly 10% done already!

On top of that, let me introduce my Legion of Grief army led by lady Oleander:

Or should I say the Lady of the lake (I bet you can see where this is going )
Along with her banshees (damsels):

So there's a few black knights (of the realm):

And some hexwraiths (Who might be questing):

and some men at arms to back them up:

And what would a Bretonnian Legion of Grief army without a couple of characters:
Some (Wight) Lords to lead the knights (although I really need to replace them with the lovely new one)

and a Lord on (very dead) Pegasus (who is covered in cotton wool from storage, I'll clean him off someday):

Whilst I like the army, there's some bad news...
Legion of Grief is no longer matched play valid, so what I actually have is a mixture of Soulblight Gravelords and Nighthaunt.
The good news is that The Wight Lords, Black Nights and skeletons make up a 730 Soulblight list! And lady Oleander, Reikenor, the hexwraiths and banshees make up 585 points, so I've nearly got a Nighthaunt army too!
so that's four and half (out of 32) done, that's like 14%...

Told you this was going to be a long one, as we're going to keep going...

As I was thinking about the fact that I needed to split up the army, I remembered that I've had the fun of collecting a few armies over the years, one of which was a Throgg led Chaos Warriors army back in WFB. Although they'll all need rebasing, handily (in this case at least) GW decided to split up the chaos warriors list, so what was a ~2000 point army now get split across various Chaos forces:
Beasts of Chaos (80 points):

Blades of Khorne (250 points):

Slaves to darkness (who need 5 more warriors (who are in bits) to make 730 points):

And several non chaos forces:
Ogor Mawtribes (730 points):

Gloomspite Gits (Trogg horde 860 points, and this is what happens when you have too many troggs for your light box):

So whilst I see a lot of rebasing in my future, (and trogg painting), that'll be another 3 (and couple of little bits) armies. which means I've got the starts of nearly 8 forces, which is 15% of the way there, maybe this isn't so crazy...

Alright...bracing for another flurry of models. What you have done so far looks sweet. I like the blue Jugger and the Trogg horde. Wouldn't mind another few shots of the guy you made from Archaon, either.

I really like the teal juggernaut, not a standard colour for them!

Here's the extra pictures you asked for, I've just started rebasing him:

As you noticed he's mostly Archaon, with a Chaos warrior banner pole and banner, a chaos forsaken helmet, the other arm is an orc arm (I think it was the plastic warboss on boar), and I think the skulls are from an orc set too.

Wow! More insanity and rapidly produced armies inbound! The Bretonnians look absolutely awesome, such a genius idea!

As for doing BatReps, I’ve seen quite a few others post in their P&M blogs. It’s always good to see the fruits of your labour in action.

That helmet is a fun one, it's from the OOP Forsaken kit. It was a lovely kit for all the random mutations in it, but it was a bit much if you put them all on the same guys, it's a pity they discontinued it.

I'm glad you like the Brets, they were a fun idea that I felt needed doing, and hopefully I've not upset any die hard Bretonnian fans too much
For the bat reps I'm going to need to look at getting some terrain (and a board, and learn the rules...) so it might be a little while off, but I think they'll fit in here nicely. I do have some zone mortalis style terrain, so I might see how big a board I can do and use that for some practice.

Not a lot of hobbying done recently due to the poor weather for priming and real life getting in the way, but I managed to rebase some of the Chaos onto the spare bases I had lying around. Hopefully these bases aren't too plain

Lord of Chaos

Lord on Daemonic Mount

A spawn to keep them company

And the lord of Khorne:

I think I'll be back onto the 40k next, I've got some Tau waiting to be painted.

So I managed to get a bit more painting done, and as I couldn't decide what to paint I thought I should get something done that I've been putting off for a while: gretchin
40 of the monopose little blighters.

I did them all as one big batch, and they're not the highest quality, but good enough for tabletop standard, and I even took some WIP shots. The basics is just block in the colours:

Nuln oil wash:

and highlight with the original colours:

I decided to vary them up a bit, so using red, grey and black as the main colours, just varying where they were applied. I've colour coded the hats in groups of 10, so I can split them into smaller units, or just run them as 40.
Red rims:

Brown rims:

Grey rims:

Red Hats:

And all of them together:

With that I've got a 1000 point 2nd Ed. Ork army! and I've manged to do more than a model per day for Feb, lets see if I can keep it up in March.

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 154 models so far this year.

Lovely work getting the grots all painted up. A batch that size must’ve been quite a slog, but they’re all done now!

The turquoise Khorne are looking great. I hope mine look as good in purple as yours do in turquoise

I can't blame you for not painting them, 40 was tough.

It was definitely a slog, but now I can get onto more fun things in smaller numbers (until I paint up my gloomspite that are sitting, judging me, in a corner....)
Purple Khorne sounds great, I think the Khorne models really do well in alternative schemes.

So I was on a bit of a retro roll after the grots. I got another boarboy painted up (to make 6, for 2 units of squighog boyz), and decided he could have a brown boar to mix it up with the greys:

Also with the new Aeldari codex appearing, warlocks are being moved into elites, leaving me a HQ short for the combat patrol, so I got around to painting up the Eldrad I repaired a while ago in a Biel-tan scheme to match the army:

Nothing fancy, but he'll be standing in as a normal Farseer. He also can lead my 2nd ed. Eldar army, bringing it up to 1500 points.

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 156 models painted so far this year.

I think I'm finally getting the hang of the gems, they felt easy this time
gobert wrote:Loving the boar boy, he looks to be enjoying the open lush green space to race around on!

Thanks, I was worried with the boarboyz at the start they would look ridiculous on the bigger bases, but I think they're just about right when you add in the banner and pistol waving.

My 3d printer has been going for quite a while in the background, and I've finally got enough scenery for a board:

It's 48x30, so just bigger than the combat patrol size. It's needs a paint, but I thought as I got it out to check it all fits, I should try and have a game to see how it works. I took some photots as the game progressed, but no detail ones as I was concentrating on playing, and haven't got the scenery painted up.

I decided to just play a relatively simple game, with my Space Wolves VS Emperor's Children (Death Guard). I was just playing with primary objectives, to try and get a hand of what's changed. The black areas on the map are both light cover and difficult ground (like craters), whilst the rubble is light cover, difficult ground and exposed position.

Onto deployment.
Space Wolves group up front and center, with the wolves ready to run around the side to get to the objective. Death guard split into two groups, one to sit on the home objective the other to advance up the side.

Death Guard wins the roll of for going first.

Turn one had the Death Guard advance up the side, getting just in range of the objective, the other squad walks slowly up and sends some bolter shots down the corridor, doing nothing.

In return the Space Wolves move forwards and the hellblasters send a hail of fire in return killing off two plague marines and injuring a third. Poor advance rolls leave the wolves and intercessors short of the second objective.

Turn two (which I forgot to photo ) and three resulted in the wolves grabbing the second objective, and the Noxious Blightbringer going and picking a fight to try and clear them off. A massive pile up in the middle of the board, resulting in the wholesale slaughter of all the plague marines except a champion who was reduced to one wound. In return the Lord of Contagion and crew cut down the Space Wolves Captain, 4 Intercessors and 4 hellblasters. The intercessor who due to the loss of his squad was out of engagement range made a run off to try and steal the Death Guard home objective whilst his comrades were slughtered holding up the Death Guard advance.

With the worry of a lone Space Wolf stealing the objective the Biologis Putrifier charged after him, managing to stab him in the back and bring him down before he could reach it. The Lord and champion smashed into the remaining space wolves, slaughtering them all. The Noxious Blightbringer killed off the remaining wolves, claiming the objective, making it three vs one, and with no space wolves left the Death Guard would be free to take the last one unopposed.

I'm not going to count this for the knockout, as I wasn't using secondary objectives, and no doubt made a load of mistakes, so the Space Wolves get a second chance.

My takeaways from the armies.
Space Wolves: Hellblasters sting, and the Captain really needs a melee weapon. Also fenrisian wolves are fast, but very squishy.
Death Guard: I hadn't realised quite how durable the Death Guard would be, and the Lord of Contagion is an absolute monster.

Onto a painting and modelling side:

I decided on my Tau colour scheme, purple and blue/gray:

I decided I really likes it, and whilst the blue/grey reminded me of Tau, I was suprised I hadn't seen more armies in it...
Then I realised why...
It's the colour of Tau skin

So I've gone with a darker skin tone than normal, hopefully it works:

Now I've decided on a scheme, hopefully I can get through the Tau relatively quickly.

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 160 models painted so far this year.

Looks like a fun little test game, certainly very bloody! The terrain looks cool, from the pics I can barely see any print lines or dodgy bits. Can’t wait to see you paint it up. The darker skin works well on the tau and the purple looks really good. The last chap looks like his staff needs edge highlighting though.

There are lots of print lines or the terrain, but for the price/time to print, I'm happy with it. I might try some high build primer to see if that can hide them.

mcmattila wrote:That purple on the Tau is beautiful! Looking forward to seeing some fire warriors too. I agree with gobert though, the staff needs some highlights.

I agree with the staff, not quite sure how I missed it when painting

So I've been away with work for a bit, hence the lack of updates, but I did manage to get the staff updated:

Hopefully that looks better I painted the rest of the drones I own to match the other ones:

I also got another couple of bits done. With the changes to the Eldar codex storm guardians went from 8 in a squad to 10, so I need a couple more. I've got one in the post, but got this guy painted up:

My Death Guard have been missing an Apothecary for a long time (I've only got one between the two squads), so I got this guy and painted him up:

So now both Tactical squads can have an apothecary!

And as Forgeworld sells him as part of a pair, the other one is joining my Emperor's children:

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 172 models painted so far this year.

I was surprised at how much I like the purple and grey together, glad you like it too! And the apothecary got a suitably quick and dirty paintjob, and depending on the next horus heresy reveals I might look at expanding the force.

The last guardian for the storm guardians arrived, and after a quick bit of paint stripping (I love that I can just use paint thinner on metal models) it was good to go. I did some googling to see what paintjobs people had done before, and turns out the model is from 1988, which means it was old enough to have an official name in the sales flyer , so here is Champion Elres Fireflash:

Having a quick look at the 2nd Ed.Eldar Codex guardians came in 5s, so I've now got a squad with Chainswords (and a fusion gun) led by Elres:

And a squad with power swords, led by Commander Lessei Moondancer:

I kind of want to get a musician and standard bearer to complete the command group, but not sure what use I would actually have for them...

I'm sure I'll get around to finishing up a combat patrol at some point, but I'm quite enjoying these random models, so we'll see what I find after rummaging around a bit more...

Great blog! What size sections are you printing the Zone Mortalis floors / walls / collapsed parts / rubble in?

I've been thinking of 3d printing a bunch similarly, but my print bed is rather small.

For the most part I'm printing them in 6 inch squares, as they split nicely and that fits on my Ender 3 and I can get it done in a day so I don't have to leave it overnight and hope nothing goes wrong. I would imagine it's pretty easy to split the stl's to fit on a smaller bed, but it'll take a while to get through enough for a board.
I've attached them to 12 inch self adhesive vinyl floor tiles, using the adhesive side against the plastic. It's not amazing glue so I'll probably have to reglue them at some point, but it works for now.

Glad you like him, and those old eldar sculpts had so much character.

Here's some (not quite so old) eldar sculpts, some Fire dragons from the late 90s:

I got these when GW were phasing out metal models, as they seemed to sling random blister packs into mail orders at the time. I got 2 blister packs of them, so 4 fire dragons, which was less than useful with a minimum squad of 5, and I'm not really a fan of the sculpts so they got relegated to the "I'll do these if I ever need them" pile

Turns out I can use them in the Ynnari combat patrol so I need them
Although as I'm still not a massive fan of the models it was a quick drybrush and wash job. Although I did give them a banner.

The exarch is actually a metal guardian from the support weapon platforms, with a fusion gun added.

Why did I have a random guardian crewman lying around you may ask?

The reason is this guy:

And yes that is a metal gun, so he doesn't balance very well...

I've never understood the idea that there are the souls of some of the best warriors around, who specialised in certain aspects of war, and you stick them in standardised wraithlords, so I decided to build a couple of Aspect wraithlords.

A couple?

Yep, there's this guy too:

I think I have the parts of a striking scorpion one I half built lying around, might need to see if I can find it and finish it off.

With the fire dragons and the storm guardians done, I've got a chunk of the Ynnari combat patrol done. I'm trying to work out who should lead it. Whilst Yvraine would be cool, I would like to keep the whole metal army theme going. I've seen some conversions making Asurmen out of the Visarch model, so I'm tempted to do it the other way around, removing his gun and possibly doing a headswap if people think that would look cool?
Alternatively if anyone has an idea of a metal GW model I could convert into Yvraine I'm all ears!

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 178 models painted so far this year.

Dark Reaper Wraithlord is my favorite thing today. Metal Visarch is an intriguing possibility. Not sure what you could use for Yvraine. If you could find a metal Lhamaean or maybe an old Morathi, the one in the dress. Morathi may have too much hair.

Old school Morathi is a good call, she's got quite a lot of hair and an odd crown, but so does Yvarine, so it works. The only problem is I now need to find her an appropriate cat...

The Warp spiders gun is from a (metal) support weapon. The dark reapers missile launcher is bits and pieces of the weapons that come in the wraithlord's box cobbled together with a generous amount of greenstuff to fill the gaps.

I went through a phase where I had a lot of fun with the plastic wriathlords, they're really posable. I've got a couple of half (or less) finished projects around them, and as you liked the finished ones, I thought I would see what state the others are in. Looks like I might need to buy a new one for spares...

So starting from the best condition one:

What's better than space elf ninja clowns?
Undead-cyborg space elf ninja clowns:

He's just missing a shuriken catapult (and a massive grin )

Here's the Striking scorpion one, he's lost a hand and is missing his sword, so I'll need to rummage for those, but otherwise he's not in bad shape:

And then there's this guy...

Yeah he's missing an arm(which I have a spare of) and a leg and his head (which I don't). Hopefully they're just in another box...

However I've otherwise had a productive day, got something old done:

Turns out in 2nd ed orks needed a mob of evil sunz to bring another mek, and I've got 2 extras. I might try and find three more and just run them a squad of evil sunz on foot.

And I got something new done too:

I didn't have an Ultramarine army when I got this guy from the conquest magazine, so I built him up for my Death Watch, but never got around to painting him, but now he's done.

I also made lots of progress on another tactical squad for my blood angels, but ran out of basing paint, and need to have a rummage/scout on eBay for extra banners...

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 181 models painted so far this year.

More win on the Eldar wraiths! The scorpion and harlequin look really cool, I hope you manage to find his swords. I’m not sure what the last one is, the long weapon puts me in mind of shining spears, but my Eldar knowledge is limited tbh.

A squad of Evil Sunz mekboyz sounds awesome. They kinda work as old school slugga boys too.

The DW Ultramarine looks cool, the shoulder pad and head swap work well.

And you saved the best ‘til last! All of those classic 2nd Ed Bolter Huggers must be a beautiful sight on your shelves. Shame I don’t have any BAs primed and ready to paint

Your Eldar knowledge might be limited, but you were right

Turns out his missing parts were in the wrong box, along with the striking scorpion's sword, but not his pistol however I have spare.

I also got Narik Dreygur painted up. I managed to snag him cheap a while ago, however he didn't come with a blister or anything so I'm pretty sure he's a recast. But as you can only get him second hand anyway, I'm not too broken up about it. And you never know, he could have been an original...

Now I really want to do an Iron Warrior's 30k force. Maybe after I finish the 40k combat patrols I'll look at doing a small force for each of the legions (when I win the lottery )

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 182 models painted so far this year.

So I've been trying to paint up more models than I buy each month, to make sure I work through at least some of my backlog. Which was fine until Hachette were having and "end of line" sale on the conquest magazine.

Mistakes were made...

So I now have enough marines to do another combat patrol, consisting of a captain, intercessors, hellblasters and inceptors, along side an apothecary and a chaplain...
Might do them as Iron Hands as it'll be quick

I also now own Typhus, 8 more plague marines (to become more emperor's children), 2 Bloat drones (and one on a shelf) and 2 lords of contagion (not sure what to do with them..)

So whilst I wait on basing materials for the Blood angels I've painted, I thought I would finish up some models last night to try and make up for the ones I bought:

So here's some old school (very short) guard ratlings:

And then some Storm troopers:

I did 12 of them as it allows me to run them as a 10 man squad without the heavy weapon team to use them in 9th as scions.

So that's 17 models, which with the others I've painted this month puts me at a positive (of 1...) as long as I don't buy any more models in the next three days...

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 199 models painted so far this year.

Looks like I spotted the hachette clearance a little too late, but on the plus I saved myself a good bit of money on minis I’m unlikely to paint for ages! I’ll live vicariously through your posts instead

The Ratlings are really cool, on those bases they are very era correct too! Cool additions to keep you in the positive

Wow. The jetbike Wraithlord is awesome. Love the old IG minis. And the Deathwatch marine rocks.

I probably should have saved some money too, but who doesn't need more marines...

youwashock wrote:Wow. The jetbike Wraithlord is awesome. Love the old IG minis. And the Deathwatch marine rocks.

I'm glad you like them. The wraithlord on jetbike is a bit intimidating to paint as it's going to be white, so I'm putting it off, but it'll get done when I get some white/grey primer.

I'm sneaking one more model in this month:

This guy had got lost in the bottom of my 40k bitz box a while ago, and was missed when I painted up the rest of the Cursed Company from the WFB Dogs of War range. I had a plastic skeleton fill in, but it just didn't look right, so now that I've found him he get's to join the rest.
And it's a good thing I did too, because I (foolishly) went on eBay and picked up the last warglaive I need to finish off the Chaos Knights combat patrol... so I'm still at +1 for the month

Having mentioned the Hachette impulse buy, this is the majority of the marine stuff:

Which, although mostly monopose, is a nice combat patrol.

I was thinking of painting them up as Iron hands, because it's quick and easy.
But I figure I should try and push myself painting wise to actually improve, rather than just get them painted. So the question is which chapter to go for. I've already ruled out: any I've already got (Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Deathwatch, Space Wolves, Ultramarines),White scars (not painting that much white), Salamanders (there's no flamers), Black templars (none of their kits involved)
That leaves the following out of the main chapters:
  • Iron Hands

  • Raven Guard

  • Imperial Fists

  • Iron Hands and Raven Guard are both mostly black, and as there is no sneaky marines in this lot out of the two I would do Iron Hands. So that leaves Imperial Fists, or do something else.
    I'm torn between:
  • Iron Hands, for being quick and easy

  • Imperial Fists, for being an original legion I don't have

  • Howling Griffons, to really push me out of my comfort zone.

  • Or something someone suggests? If you've got any idea of a different chapter the combat patrol would suit, let me know.

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 200 models painted so far this year.

Nice dirty skelly! 200 is a great round number for 3 months… targeting 800 by the end of the year?!?

I like the sound of pushing yourself, though all 3 options that you’ve put forward sound great. I’m personally a fan of Crimson Fists over the Imperial variety. I’ve also see a few cool Sons of Medusa armies.

I hadn't thought of doing Crimson Fists, but after seeing a lovely Tor Garadon in the crimson fist colour scheme I think if I do them I'm going to want them all in Gravis armour (Gravis Captain, heavy intercessors and 2 squads of Aggressors is a combat patrol, and so much dakka )

I've got two main targets for painting:
    1) paint an average of a model a day each month (in order to try and keep myself working, and not just blast out 365 in the first half of the year and not paint the rest of the year),
    2) paint more models than I buy (because I have a lot to paint, and I don't really need more).

So If I keep up the painting target then I'll be over 400, but I think 800 would be a bit far, but I can always dream...
Hang on, 800 in a year is 67 models a month, maybe that's more of a nightmare than a dream

My basing paint arrived, so got these guys done up, complete with base adapters:

They've got some "temporary" banners, as they aren't era appropriate, but they'll do until I get some proper ones and it didn't feel right to leave them without.

Also because apparently I can only paint the fun bits of my 2nd Ed. guard army, this guy got done too:

    The OG "Primaris".

I did get some work done on the normal guys, but not enough to be photo worthy.

As it's a new month, I'm already at 11 models, which I think is quite good, might take the weekend off

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 211 models painted so far this year.

Thanks for the offer of some banners, but I'm pretty sure I bought a load previously (for exactly this situation), I just need to find where I've put them.

I'm beginning to think I might actually have a problem with the quantity of things I'm painting...

Oh well, this update is brought to you by the colour blue!

Over the weekend and this evening I batch painted some Imperial guard. So here's My Mordian Iron Guard to go with the ratlings, storm troopers and psyker:
    Command Squad

    Infantry Squad

    Heavy Weapons Squad

I designed and printed some 60mm bases for the lascannons, as they didn't come with one, and I wanted to recess one of the crew in each one. I forgot to increase the size of the holes so the crew need a bit of pressure to get in, but it also means they don't fall out so I'm actually happy that it's a tight fit.

Between the Mordians and the others it comes to about 750 points in 2nd Ed, and 20 Power in modern parlance. I'm tempted to get a chimera to round it out into a 25 power combat patrol, as although it's been recut, it's pretty much the same as from back in the 90's. If I do the question is, do I do it black for the storm troops or blue for the infantry squad?

I also finished up a pair or dark reapers that arrived in the post to bring me up to a squad of 5 (as it's the new minimum ):

I think they blend in well enough considering I forgot what colours I used to paint them originally, the new ones are Kantor Blue, and nuln oil, just in case I ever need to paint any more

With the dark reapers and my existing 2nd ed eldar, I'm pretty sure I can field both a Craftworld combat patrol, and a Ynnari one. I'm just waiting on Asurmen to arrive before he becomes the Visarch to complete that one.

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 237 models painted so far this year.

I figured if I've got the Mordian's done then these guys should get some more paint:

I've managed to get them based tonight, and whilst I don't normally post too many WIP shots, I felt like doing it because these old metal models have so much character.
In a good way, unlike their replacements:

That guy at the front has seen some things...

Hopefully my paintjob will do the old sculpts justice, lets see if I can get these guys done by the end of the month (or week ).

Hopefully the rest of the paint job has kept up with the good start I had

I managed to get the rest of the paintjob done on the catachans, here's the command HQ:

Although now the image is blown up monitor size I realise I need to go back and redo the mouth on the flamer dude.

    Infantry Squad:

You might have noticed the missile launcher changed, that's because I realised that I had one with the front part of the missile launcher sitting around, so switched him in.

But I felt the old one needed finishing off anyway, so he got done (along with his loader):

And because I obviously don't paint enough...

    I got this guy done:

I went fairly standard on assembly, with a melta:

And then decided I didn't like the little stubby chain-cleaver that means he can't reach grots running around his ankles, so it got extended:

I know I'm not the first, but I think I pulled it off okay.

Which now means he get's to lead the two Claw moiraxes to form a Chaos Knights Combat Patrol:

Finally more progress on the combat patrols!

Now that I've got the 6 armigers all done, I need to go back and both look at the bases, but also do some markings and weathering/rust across them to tie them together more, and with my acheron.
I'm not sure if I try and freehand some house Herpetrax symbols, try and cobble together stuff from transfers I have and then paint over them, or suck it up and buy some chaos knights transfer sheets.

27/32 Combat Patrols, and 255 models painted so far this year.

They wouldn't look right without the bright green bases

Speaking of bright green bases, I've not got anything finished but made progress on these:

They're kind of resembling the Army of the Dead from LOTR at the moment, but I'm going to go with the green/white camo from the codex.
I had undercoated them black I figured I would get the green sorted, and then block out the white bits with a grey and highlight them, rather than try and get the whole model looking white and then adding the green.

One of the reasons that I've not made as much progress as I probably could have, is because Asurmen arrived, and I've been busy turning him into the Visarch:

I've removed the two shuriken catapults he had, added a shield and back vane, and he's getting a red paintjob to a) match the Visarch, and b) make him different to Asurmen's actual paint scheme.

I've still got some painting to do, and need to find him a base, but hopefully he is suitably Visarch like.

As you asked so nicely I got a trial of the camo pattern done:

Needs a bit of tidying up, but otherwise looks okay.

    I finished up Visarch/Asurmen:

However I don't have any more of the 40mm Necromunda bases to make him match the rest of my current Eldar.
This leaves me in the position where I could:
    a) buy some more necromunda bases (1 more base),
    b) rebase all of my retro Eldar onto green bases (51 of them)...
I know which is less work, but I'm trying to work out which would look better.

Just a little update as I got sidetracked, but in a positive way...

I managed to find the banner poles that I had lost, so 3rd squad got paper banners:

And as I had a third banner pole, I've transferred a Librarian from my Dark Angels to my Blood Angels, with a quick repaint:

Back in 2nd Ed. to run a dreadnought you had to have a Techmarine, so I've now got this guy to accompany the dread:

I decided to go with a darker red (Khorne and Wazdakka) to differentiate him from the rest of the Blood Angels as I wanted him to stand out as a techmarine, rather than just another Blood Angel.

Between the Blood Angels, Grey Knights and Assassin, I've got just over 3500 points in 2nd Ed, or just over 2000 in 9th, which kind of shows how the game has grown.

I need to get back to painting the Valhallans...

27/32 Combat Patrols, and 257 models painted so far this year.

Hopefully a coat of grey and two coats of white will work, I might be able to hide some messy bits of it under a wash
I'm really glad I swapped out the plastic banners for the paper ones, I've got another (hopefully more impressive) one in the works too.

I've been a bit quiet over Easter because I've been busy with family, and also I decided that I would try the Visarch on a green base, rather than a necromunda one and see how it looked. Having looked into his background, turns out he was a Dire Avenger Exarch before he wandered off to the Drukhari/Ynnari, so the Asurmen model (which is actually labelled as Exarch on his tag) works nicely, and I'll be running him as an Exarch in 2nd ed:

Once I got that done I decided that looks much better than the necromunda base would.
So I've just had to rebase my Eldar army

So here's a load of photos of the units after rebasing (in no particular order):

    Striking Scorpions

    Dire Avengers

    Dark Reapers

    Fire Dragons

    Guardian Defenders

    Weapon Platforms

    Storm guardians with Power Swords

    Storm Guardians with Chainswords

    Farseer and Warlocks

    War Walker

    Wraithlord

Which means that both my Aeldari and Ynnari combat patrols are now done, (and didn't really fit in my lightbox):
    Ynnari combat patrol:

    Aeldari Combat Patrol:

Which puts me up to 28/32 combat patrols. Got Tau, Farsight Enclaves, Harlequins and Corsairs/Haemonculus coven left on my plan.

Although if Squats are coming soon I may have to work out where I could fit them in...

28/32 Combat Patrols, and 258 models painted so far this year.

It was actually quite quick to do the bases, as I textured them and painted them as a big batch, and didn't need to be too careful as I didn't have the models on them, just took a while pinning them all to the bases

I do like the old school bases, so much I did some more:

    Apothecary:

    Another Chaplain:

I didn't have his banner pole so I made one...

Company Standard (the bigger banner I was working on):

I also got three bases of scarabs painted, but they look the same as my last ones, so I've not photographed them yet...

I'm missing a Terminator Captain (as he's a separate choice from the normal Captain), but I don't think I'll bother picking one up. It is getting sizable now, but there's more on my desk awaiting paint

They got ambushed by some necrons though. My son and I have been collecting the Imperium magazine, although we're only up to issue 15 or so, with the rest in a box as we make our way slowly through them. He decided he wanted to collect and paint the Ultramarines, so I got the necrons:
    Overlord and Royal Warden:

    Some more detroyers:

    And yet more warriors:

I did them to match up the rest of my existing army, although I spent a bit of time tidying up the Tesseract Glow paint using Phalanx yellow, so I'm much happier with the glows on these guys. I'm sure I'll find time to go back and fix my army too

Last post I said I had some Blood Angels on my desk and the necrons pushed in front of them in the painting queue, so I thought I should get them done.

I managed to get a squad of Terminators (and 2 extras) finished:

There's both a Heavy Flamer and a Cyclone Missile Launcher painted up, but if I don't want to field a heavy weapon I've got enough storm bolter guys to make the squad up. If I can get a sergeant and 2 more bolter guys for a reasonable price I'll split them up into 2 squads, although I'm not sure how often I'll be looking to field 3 squads of terminators...

And here's a WIP of the last Blood Angel currently on my desk (and possibly that I own):

Another metal dreadnought to go with Tartarus. He's missing the smoke launchers, and I had to make the top of the banner pole, but he's coming along nicely.

I highly recommend applying transfers, sealing them and then painting over them to do army markings.

As ValhallanWinter suggested Tartarus and Gehenna as names for dreadnoughts (way back on page 6 ) it seems fitting that this one is going to be Gehenna, assuming I can write it neatly on the banner .

28/32 Combat Patrols, and 290 models painted so far this year.

So I got Gehenna's banner done (and the base):

I had to scale the banner up slightly due to the difference in size between the banner pole I made, and the original one, so it's a little bigger than Tartarus's, but I think they look good together, and it's not a noticable when they aren't side by side:

And then I thought I should post a group shot of them all together in the cabinet as I think that's me finished all of the Blood Angels I own :

28/32 Combat Patrols, and 291 models painted so far this year

Wow. I've been away from dakka for a while and missed a lot of cool stuff on this blog. It's awesome to see how the collection has grown, especially the Blood angels. I feel like that faction in particular wears the 2nd Ed. bling especially well.

Welcome back! The Blood Angels were the poster boys of 2nd Ed. so if any faction deserved the old bling it was them.

I'm glad you like the marines, and don't worry about the speed I paint, I know it's not normal One day I'll slow down and focus on painting well, rather than quickly...

Today is not that day though....

I finished off the Ice warriors of Valhalla. (I promise the white doesn't look quite as rough in real life as the photos make it).

I've got a Command Squad, Lieutenant with hand flamer and chainsword, 2 guys with flamers and 2 guys with lasguns:

An Infantry Squad with flamer and mortar:

And a heavy weapons squad with 3 mortars (with 3d printed stands, as I somehow lost the metal ones many years ago...):

The Valhallans clock in at 323 points in 2nd Ed (without any veteran abilities), and a huge 175 points in 9th.

Combined with the Mordians, Catachans, Storm Troopers and Ratlings, I'm ~1200 points in total in second ed. (still a long way off the Blood angels), but they're ~700 points in 9th. It's kind of crazy how many bodies a guard army can get on the table now.

The Imperial guard army construction was a bit weird back in 2nd, you could have up to three infantry or heavy weapons squads per command squad/HQ, as long as they matched the regiment, and then for each of those squads you could include an additional unit, (like my storm troopers and ratlings). As I have 3 infantry squads and 2 heavy weapons squads (with matching command), I have space for 5 additional units, leaving me space for 3 more. I might have to treat myself to some tanks in future Especially as they've pretty much not changed, so I can grab the modern(ish) Leman Russ, Basilisk or Chimera.

I think that's the end of my 2nd Ed. models, at least until eBay and poor impulse control make an appearance again

Back onto the actual combat patrols next I think, but we'll see if I can stay on track.

28/32 Combat Patrols, and 319 models painted so far this year

Wowsers! They just keep coming! The Blood Angels look absolutely amazing on their display shelf. You’re gonna smash through the 1 mini a day for the year… at this rate you’ll be able to put your feet up in October and still get through 365 minis I reckon

Glad you like the colour scheme, it's nice and easy but adds some colour.

If I keep it up I'll probably be at 365 some time next month we'll have to see how it goes.

Real life incoming, if you just want hobby skip down to the bold bit and pictures.

I've had a bit of a slowdown in my painting. Turns out there's a good reason I've had a difficult time keeping on track for one project at a time, I've recently been diagnosed with ADHD (innatentive type). Which in very basic terms means I can't sustain attention on things (unless it hits a special spot in my brain, in which case I can focus on it for hours and forget to eat, sleep or do anything else. But I don't get to consciously decide what hits that spot...). Which has made life awkward at times, but as Warhammer has been one of the things I could focus on, meant I could get a lot planned/built/painted.
I'm now on medication, which has allowed me to have more control over what I can spend my time working on, so I've been doing lots of DIY that's been put off (for years...) And spending more time with my wife and son doing things that interest them (and not driving them crazy due to my fidgeting and being distracted), and as such it's cut into my hobby time. That's why there has been a lack of posts as I don't like to post in a P&M blog without some P&M. Hopefully I'll get a nice balance where I get some hobby done, but I'm almost certainly going to be less productive than I have been since the start of the year, which is a shame for my hobbying, but is much better for my life

    Anyway back to hobby:
I did manage to get a bit painted this month as I hammered these out in maybe 6 hours over two days (to allow washes and bases to dry):

3 scarab swarms and 17 warriors. The number of warriors is because I already had 3 from the start painting set, so scavenged 7 of the old warriors with green rods from my bits box and swapped the guns with some spares. They were a bit battered from being not very carefully looked after for over a decade, but it kind of helps them fit in with the others.

I think that puts me at 339 models so far for the year, 26 models until I hit one a day for the year! I'm pretty sure I'll hit that target, and as the new Horus Heresy box with 54 models in is tempting me (for at least one...), I'll almost certainly overshoot it by some margin...although I do have a plan that will make painting the heresy stuff nice and quick.

Good news on your diagnosis, hopefully the meds help you find an even keel, even if the hobby slows down!

The old-cron interlopers are very well hidden. I had a good look and couldn’t spot them! The extra guns certainly help to disguise their age along with a few knicks here and there. I took the clippers for the Necrons in the start collecting box

Thanks for the well wishes Ragsta and gobert.

It's been a while since my last post, turns out getting meds balanced isn't a walk in the park, and real life has been busy for the last month.

I've been struggling to work up the enthusiasm to work on the project I should be focussed on (I've got some harlequins sat on my desk but need to work out the colour scheme and which bits of which models are what colour).
However I have made some progress on other projects.
I picked up a Lahmian Vampire to stand in as Lucrezzia Belladonna for my WFB Dogs of war army:

I got her second hand, and the paint job was already decent, so I didn't bother stripping her and just went over her and tidied up, mainly giving her a normal skin tone.

I also worked on a project that I new what colour everything was going, more Necrons!

My son and I have been (very) slowly working through the Imperium magazine, he's got the Space Marines, so I've got the Necrons (and possibly other assorted imperial forces from it). Some of them turned up earlier in the thread, but I've got around to painting most of the rest that we've received so far:
    Yet more warriors and scarabs:

That's me up to 60 warriors and 15 scarab bases...

    5 immortals:

    5 Flayed ones:

Those guys are so fiddly I don't think they'll ever survive actually being used on the tabletop...

I've got two cryptecs awaiting paint, but apart from that this is what we've got so far from Imperium (with a couple of extra warriors):

That puts me at 363 Models so far this year and 24 for this month. Hopefully I can get another 6 done this week to keep me at one a day for the month, and push me over the 1 day for the year target.

That’s a serious volume of Necrons! The flayed ones look great with their neon claws, shame their nails will get clipped through use. .

I can only dream of getting to 365 minis, seriously impressive volumes painted.

Good luck getting the meds balanced

I'm glad you like the colour on the necrons. I think it breaks them up a bit, and the red is very forgiving, as it's just a coat of mephiston red before I nuln oil the whole model, and then some evils suns scarlet to highlight.

The neon claws are a bit of fun, however I've already snapped one

Finger crossed, I'm now on the right dose of meds, and as a result, more hobby!

I got the two crypteks painted up, nothing fancy, but they fit right in.
    The Chronomancer:

    The Technomancer:

And then I thought it was a pity that the necrons from Imperium were painted up, but the marines weren't, so the first 8 assault intercessors got some paint:

I've got a lot more Ultramarines to power through, but as I'm only painting them up to battle ready at the moment, I'll hopefully get them done in short order.

That brings me up to 373 models for the first half of the year, and I've manged to hit more than a model a day each month, although I only scraped in at 34 this month.
Even more impressively, I've managed to shrink my pile of shame, as I've managed to paint about 2 extra models for every one I've bought, hopefully I can keep that going and get through the rest by about...2030...

I might see if I can dig out all the models I've painted so far this year for a group shot over the weekend, assuming they will all fit on my table...

So I didn't get a chance to pull my models out and get a 6 month photo, but I did get time over the weekend to get some paint on another couple of models. These guys went pretty quick as I've already painted so many of them I can just about do it on autopilot.

My Necrons got some reinforcements, bringing me up to 9 destroyers, and far too many characters...

And the Ultramarines got some more Assault Intercessors. Between Imperium and Imdomitus, the Ultramarines are up to 20 Assault intercessors, in 4 x 5 man squads (plus the three randoms from the paint set):

And then as a bit of a break and letting me push my painting just a little bit (I actually highlighted the blue on this guy ), there is the captain from Imperium (with an unapproved loadout...):

So that's 16 so far this month, which brings me to 389 for the year.

Glad you like the necrons! I've hopefully got some time tomorrow to break out the models and get some group shots (including the 6th month painting shot), I'll try and remember to get one of the Captain and assault Intercessors!

However, I'm back on the painting wagon, painting some things I can do on autopilot and finishing off some bits and pieces that've been on my to do list for too long, so I thought I should put up my latest painted stuff, before I post a load of photos of stuff I've already done...

    So beware, many photos ahead!

Trying to get through the rest of the Imperium/starter box backlog, more Ultramarines got painted, specifically the Captain and Lieutenant:

Also some Aggressors, because who doesn't like flaming death:

Yes, I now have 9, at least it's someone for my gravis captain to lead...

To complete the Imperium haul here's the last Necron I've got (excluding the one tomb blade who's waiting on his mates to show up in Imperium, who I'm ignoring until I've got the three of them to paint up together), a Canoptek Spyder:

Just trying to clear off my WIP tray, so I finished off a Deathwatch Inceptor, which I've had sat around for far too long. Eventually I'll get around to getting a heavy intercessor squad for him to go with, that's not happening any time soon, but at least he's done...

I actually made progress on the combat patrols! That project I started ages ago, and is in my thread title and everything...
    Some Farsight Enclave Breachers:

Looking at what I've got left to finish for the Combat Patrols:
  • Harlequins: Painting all of them (2 Shadowseers, 2 Deathjesters, 2 units of 6 Elven Space Ninja Clowns.)

  • T'au: Painting 20 firewarriors, and a commander

  • Farsight Enclaves: Painting 3 crisis suits and 2 drones, and then getting a broadside, which oddly is showing as "Sold out online" on the GW webstore in the UK, so I might need to replan...

  • Corsairs: Still waiting for them to be released individually

  • I really should prioritise them...

Ah well with the painting I've done I've hit my target for July, (36 models so far this month), and it puts me up to 409 for the year.

So I spent Sunday rearranging my office so that I'm not staring into the sun all morning when I'm working from home. Which did result in me freeing up a bit of my desk to take photos on!
It was about 2 foot square, and I thought I could fit all the models onto it...
    I was wrong.
So I've split them up, here are all the (modern) 40k models I painted in the first half of this year:

Then all the 2nd Ed. models I painted:

And, for sake of completeness, the WFB/AOS models I painted:

maybe I should try and make the latter half of the year more balanced.

I realised that I haven't taken a photo of all the Necrons together so far, as they were split between two cabinets and slowly getting added to, so here they are:

I also purchased some black A2 card when I was out on Saturday to use as a backdrop for stuff that won't fit in my lightbox, turns out I'm going to need a bigger piece as A2 isn't all that large. However I did get some photos:
    My Custodes combat patrol:

    My Tyranids Combat Patrol:

    My Horus Heresy Emperor's Children:

    My Deathwatch:

My Admech, who are yet to make an appearance in this blog, but they're about to get some reinforcements from the Imperium magazine, so they'll get more photos then:

And some renegade sisters of battle, both on foot:

    And on wing:

I did those conversions a while ago, and I was crazy to convert so many metal models. It took forever with a hobby saw and green stuff. I really should get around to giving them some nicer highlights and picking out some more of the details.

And then I thought I should round it out with Gobert's request, my Captain leading a horde of Assault Intercessors:

I managed to convert a couple of spare guys out of a normal intercessor and a hellblaster to accompany the 3 from the pain set, so that's me up to 5 squads of 5. They're the guy on the back right without a helmet, and the guy to the right of him, which puts me up to 411 for the year.

Thanks! I really like the lava bases, they're a mix of resin ones and one's I've made out of cork.

So this weekend was pretty productive. I've added some more to the oldhammer, turning the two spare meks I had into a squad of 5 evil sunz:

It didn't feel oldhammer enough without paper banners, so they had to happen. It would be rude to leave the main mek in the army without a banner, so he got one too:

I also threw a quick paintjob on some carnifexes I rescued a while ago, they won't win any painting competitions, but they're off the pile of shame, so that's the important part.

And then I also got some work done towards the combat patrols, some Crisis Suits:

I've got them set up as three members of the 8, Sub-Commander Torchstar, Commander Bravestorm, and Commander Brightstorm, Although they're going to be run as a commander (Bravestorm) and a unit of Crisis Bodyguards (the other two). With the breachers that leaves about 8 power left to make a combat patrol, so I can either fit Ob'lotai in a broadside, or one of the other commanders, depending on what I pick up when I get around to it.

I got some paint onto the Fire Warriors for the T'au combat patrol, but they're not finished, so there's no photos so far.

That's me up to 47 models for this month, 420 models for the year, and making progress on the combat patrols!

I'm glad you like the crisis suits, I spent ages edge highlighting and resisted the urge to just cover them in a wash to do the shading, which makes a massive change for me, so I'm glad it's worked!

Back to the old school, I had Baharroth sitting in some paint stripper for a few months. I've no idea in what I painted him in originally, but acetone, IPA and even lacquer thinner failed to remove all of the paint. I had given up with stripping him, but then realised that I had (hopefully) got enough paint off that you could still the details, so I undercoated him to see how bad it was and he was...okay. There's a couple of bits that don't look quite right, like the fae of the hawqk on his chest, but as I'm not painting to 'Eavy Metal standards, I think he should look okay on the table top.

I broke out my 2nd Ed. Eldar codex for the paint scheme, as although the 2nd ed model is still the current model (and sells so little it's still available in metal ), I don't think the new paint scheme would fit with the rest of my 2nd Ed. army. I've attempted to get a side by side photo, but the slightly shiny paper and a model that doesn't want to balance on the page made it slightly awkward:

I'm happy with how he turned out, so definitely worth giving it a go and gets him out of the paintstripper and onto a shelf. Also he can replace my non-2nd ed. Fire dragons to bring me to a 2000 point fully 2nd ed army!

That's me up to 48 models for this month, 421 models for the year

Thanks, I am pretty happy with him

I've been productive! Painting a lot of purple!
I got my fire warriors done, 10 with rifles:

    and 10 with carbines:

I'm missing a commander or something to fill out the combat patrol but here they are so far:

I also managed to actually finish another combat patrol, Harlequins!
I've got two troupes, 2 death jesters and 2 shadow seers.
    Shadowseers:

    Death Jesters

    Troupe 1

    Troupe 2

So that brings me up to 29 Combat Patrols! And the Tau and Farsight are only missing one suit each(and possibly some drones). That just leaves one Aeldari combat patrol, either Drukhari Coven or Corsairs. I'm tempted by the Corsairs, and raiding my bitsbox for customising them rather than having to just buy three boxes (and Yriel).

That's 457 models this year, and 84 models this month, almost the best month so far, (I somehow managed 87 in January), if I can get 4 in over the weekend then this will be my most productive!
