Woof! There's a ton going on in here! Love the Custodes. The Captain is just fabulous. The kit bashing on the Dark Eldar is great. The masks work really well on the Wyches. 6 to go!

Woah, you’ve been busy fixing up the combat patrols! The Dark Eldar may not have been inspiring but they look cool all painted up. The golden boys are splendid though, a very regal bunch ready to kick ass!
I’m hoping we get to see all of the Combat Patrol army shots when you get them all done… maybe even a great big Battle Royale shot too?

Thanks very much, I'm always amazed how a headswap can change the models.

I definitely want to get some better photos of all of the combat patrols once done. I'll take the time and try and set up a proper space to photo them, including the larger ones that won't fit in my little lightbox.

I know this is a P&M blog, but would people be upset if I put some brief battle reports of the Combat patrol throwdown? I realised with 32 of them there's going to be 31 matches overall, so it's going to take me a while to get through them, so I could probably start with the ones I have finished, and hopefully finish the others before they have their bouts

Although that would require me to learn the current rules, and have somewhere suitable to play, which leads onto this:

I need some scenery to be able to play on, and that includes things to block line of sight, so here's the first (of probably many) "storage tanks". I'm trying to work out how much scenery I need to fill a combat patrol board (44"x30"). I've got five or six of the shipping containers from GW, I'll print out probably another 3 or three of these, and I'm going to make some pipes (out of 3d printed stands and well... plastic pipes ). I think I'll build that first and see what the board is like afterwards.

On a unrelated note, because I get distracted easily as soon as a project is getting even close to finished, and the weather has been terrible so I haven't been able to prime anything, I thought "If I've got an army for each faction in 40k, what am I going to do next?"
And the obvious answer...
"Do the same thing for AOS..."
Sometimes I hate how I think .

Now this is going to get long, so if you want to grab a cup of coffee and a snack, now is a good time.

Queue me working out how many factions there are in AOS, 25, and how they're broken up:
Order: 9
Chaos: 8
Destruction: 4
Death: 4

Now 25 isn't that far off 32, and that could be 8 per Grand Alliance to make it fair...
Here we go again...
So order loses one, I'm not sure who yet...
Chaos get's to take theirs (the 4 gods, beasts, skaven, slaves to darkness and Legion of the first prince)
Destruction gets Gloomspite gits, (Gitz, Spiderfang and Trogg horde),Orruks (Bonesplitters, Ironjawz, Kruleboys), Ogor Mawtribe, Sons of Behemat,
Death gets Flesh eater courts, Nighthaunt, Ossiarch bonereapers, Soulblight gravelords (One Legion of blood, one Cursed city based) and 3 more.

From a quick search it looks like 750 points is the AOS equivalent to Combat Patrol, and has the following limits, 1-2 Characters, 1+ battleline, 0-1 Artillery, 0-1 Behemoth, 0-1 reinforced unit.
So fairly tight limits.
Taking stock of what I've already shown, I've got the Stormcasts (here) Kharadron (here) and Maggotkin (here), so nearly 10% done already!

On top of that, let me introduce my Legion of Grief army led by lady Oleander:

Or should I say the Lady of the lake (I bet you can see where this is going )
Along with her banshees (damsels):

So there's a few black knights (of the realm):

And some hexwraiths (Who might be questing):

and some men at arms to back them up:

And what would a Bretonnian Legion of Grief army without a couple of characters:
Some (Wight) Lords to lead the knights (although I really need to replace them with the lovely new one)

and a Lord on (very dead) Pegasus (who is covered in cotton wool from storage, I'll clean him off someday):

Whilst I like the army, there's some bad news...
Legion of Grief is no longer matched play valid, so what I actually have is a mixture of Soulblight Gravelords and Nighthaunt.
The good news is that The Wight Lords, Black Nights and skeletons make up a 730 Soulblight list! And lady Oleander, Reikenor, the hexwraiths and banshees make up 585 points, so I've nearly got a Nighthaunt army too!
so that's four and half (out of 32) done, that's like 14%...

Told you this was going to be a long one, as we're going to keep going...

As I was thinking about the fact that I needed to split up the army, I remembered that I've had the fun of collecting a few armies over the years, one of which was a Throgg led Chaos Warriors army back in WFB. Although they'll all need rebasing, handily (in this case at least) GW decided to split up the chaos warriors list, so what was a ~2000 point army now get split across various Chaos forces:
Beasts of Chaos (80 points):

Blades of Khorne (250 points):

Slaves to darkness (who need 5 more warriors (who are in bits) to make 730 points):

And several non chaos forces:
Ogor Mawtribes (730 points):

Gloomspite Gits (Trogg horde 860 points, and this is what happens when you have too many troggs for your light box):

So whilst I see a lot of rebasing in my future, (and trogg painting), that'll be another 3 (and couple of little bits) armies. which means I've got the starts of nearly 8 forces, which is 15% of the way there, maybe this isn't so crazy...

I really like the teal juggernaut, not a standard colour for them!

Here's the extra pictures you asked for, I've just started rebasing him:

As you noticed he's mostly Archaon, with a Chaos warrior banner pole and banner, a chaos forsaken helmet, the other arm is an orc arm (I think it was the plastic warboss on boar), and I think the skulls are from an orc set too.

That helmet is a fun one, it's from the OOP Forsaken kit. It was a lovely kit for all the random mutations in it, but it was a bit much if you put them all on the same guys, it's a pity they discontinued it.

I'm glad you like the Brets, they were a fun idea that I felt needed doing, and hopefully I've not upset any die hard Bretonnian fans too much
For the bat reps I'm going to need to look at getting some terrain (and a board, and learn the rules...) so it might be a little while off, but I think they'll fit in here nicely. I do have some zone mortalis style terrain, so I might see how big a board I can do and use that for some practice.

Not a lot of hobbying done recently due to the poor weather for priming and real life getting in the way, but I managed to rebase some of the Chaos onto the spare bases I had lying around. Hopefully these bases aren't too plain

So I managed to get a bit more painting done, and as I couldn't decide what to paint I thought I should get something done that I've been putting off for a while: gretchin
40 of the monopose little blighters.

I did them all as one big batch, and they're not the highest quality, but good enough for tabletop standard, and I even took some WIP shots. The basics is just block in the colours:

Nuln oil wash:

and highlight with the original colours:

I decided to vary them up a bit, so using red, grey and black as the main colours, just varying where they were applied. I've colour coded the hats in groups of 10, so I can split them into smaller units, or just run them as 40.
Red rims:

Brown rims:

Grey rims:

Red Hats:

And all of them together:

With that I've got a 1000 point 2nd Ed. Ork army! and I've manged to do more than a model per day for Feb, lets see if I can keep it up in March.

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 154 models so far this year.

Lovely work getting the grots all painted up. A batch that size must’ve been quite a slog, but they’re all done now!

The turquoise Khorne are looking great. I hope mine look as good in purple as yours do in turquoise

It was definitely a slog, but now I can get onto more fun things in smaller numbers (until I paint up my gloomspite that are sitting, judging me, in a corner....)
Purple Khorne sounds great, I think the Khorne models really do well in alternative schemes.

So I was on a bit of a retro roll after the grots. I got another boarboy painted up (to make 6, for 2 units of squighog boyz), and decided he could have a brown boar to mix it up with the greys:

Also with the new Aeldari codex appearing, warlocks are being moved into elites, leaving me a HQ short for the combat patrol, so I got around to painting up the Eldrad I repaired a while ago in a Biel-tan scheme to match the army:

Nothing fancy, but he'll be standing in as a normal Farseer. He also can lead my 2nd ed. Eldar army, bringing it up to 1500 points.

Thanks, I was worried with the boarboyz at the start they would look ridiculous on the bigger bases, but I think they're just about right when you add in the banner and pistol waving.

My 3d printer has been going for quite a while in the background, and I've finally got enough scenery for a board:

It's 48x30, so just bigger than the combat patrol size. It's needs a paint, but I thought as I got it out to check it all fits, I should try and have a game to see how it works. I took some photots as the game progressed, but no detail ones as I was concentrating on playing, and haven't got the scenery painted up.

I decided to just play a relatively simple game, with my Space Wolves VS Emperor's Children (Death Guard). I was just playing with primary objectives, to try and get a hand of what's changed. The black areas on the map are both light cover and difficult ground (like craters), whilst the rubble is light cover, difficult ground and exposed position.

Onto deployment.
Space Wolves group up front and center, with the wolves ready to run around the side to get to the objective. Death guard split into two groups, one to sit on the home objective the other to advance up the side.

Death Guard wins the roll of for going first.

Turn one had the Death Guard advance up the side, getting just in range of the objective, the other squad walks slowly up and sends some bolter shots down the corridor, doing nothing.

In return the Space Wolves move forwards and the hellblasters send a hail of fire in return killing off two plague marines and injuring a third. Poor advance rolls leave the wolves and intercessors short of the second objective.

Turn two (which I forgot to photo ) and three resulted in the wolves grabbing the second objective, and the Noxious Blightbringer going and picking a fight to try and clear them off. A massive pile up in the middle of the board, resulting in the wholesale slaughter of all the plague marines except a champion who was reduced to one wound. In return the Lord of Contagion and crew cut down the Space Wolves Captain, 4 Intercessors and 4 hellblasters. The intercessor who due to the loss of his squad was out of engagement range made a run off to try and steal the Death Guard home objective whilst his comrades were slughtered holding up the Death Guard advance.

With the worry of a lone Space Wolf stealing the objective the Biologis Putrifier charged after him, managing to stab him in the back and bring him down before he could reach it. The Lord and champion smashed into the remaining space wolves, slaughtering them all. The Noxious Blightbringer killed off the remaining wolves, claiming the objective, making it three vs one, and with no space wolves left the Death Guard would be free to take the last one unopposed.

I'm not going to count this for the knockout, as I wasn't using secondary objectives, and no doubt made a load of mistakes, so the Space Wolves get a second chance.

My takeaways from the armies.
Space Wolves: Hellblasters sting, and the Captain really needs a melee weapon. Also fenrisian wolves are fast, but very squishy.
Death Guard: I hadn't realised quite how durable the Death Guard would be, and the Lord of Contagion is an absolute monster.

Onto a painting and modelling side:

I decided on my Tau colour scheme, purple and blue/gray:

I decided I really likes it, and whilst the blue/grey reminded me of Tau, I was suprised I hadn't seen more armies in it...
Then I realised why...
It's the colour of Tau skin

So I've gone with a darker skin tone than normal, hopefully it works:

Now I've decided on a scheme, hopefully I can get through the Tau relatively quickly.

Looks like a fun little test game, certainly very bloody! The terrain looks cool, from the pics I can barely see any print lines or dodgy bits. Can’t wait to see you paint it up. The darker skin works well on the tau and the purple looks really good. The last chap looks like his staff needs edge highlighting though.

There are lots of print lines or the terrain, but for the price/time to print, I'm happy with it. I might try some high build primer to see if that can hide them.

mcmattila wrote:That purple on the Tau is beautiful! Looking forward to seeing some fire warriors too. I agree with gobert though, the staff needs some highlights.

I agree with the staff, not quite sure how I missed it when painting

So I've been away with work for a bit, hence the lack of updates, but I did manage to get the staff updated:

Hopefully that looks better I painted the rest of the drones I own to match the other ones:

I also got another couple of bits done. With the changes to the Eldar codex storm guardians went from 8 in a squad to 10, so I need a couple more. I've got one in the post, but got this guy painted up:

My Death Guard have been missing an Apothecary for a long time (I've only got one between the two squads), so I got this guy and painted him up:

So now both Tactical squads can have an apothecary!

And as Forgeworld sells him as part of a pair, the other one is joining my Emperor's children:

I was surprised at how much I like the purple and grey together, glad you like it too! And the apothecary got a suitably quick and dirty paintjob, and depending on the next horus heresy reveals I might look at expanding the force.

The last guardian for the storm guardians arrived, and after a quick bit of paint stripping (I love that I can just use paint thinner on metal models) it was good to go. I did some googling to see what paintjobs people had done before, and turns out the model is from 1988, which means it was old enough to have an official name in the sales flyer , so here is Champion Elres Fireflash:

Having a quick look at the 2nd Ed.Eldar Codex guardians came in 5s, so I've now got a squad with Chainswords (and a fusion gun) led by Elres:

And a squad with power swords, led by Commander Lessei Moondancer:

I kind of want to get a musician and standard bearer to complete the command group, but not sure what use I would actually have for them...

I'm sure I'll get around to finishing up a combat patrol at some point, but I'm quite enjoying these random models, so we'll see what I find after rummaging around a bit more...

For the most part I'm printing them in 6 inch squares, as they split nicely and that fits on my Ender 3 and I can get it done in a day so I don't have to leave it overnight and hope nothing goes wrong. I would imagine it's pretty easy to split the stl's to fit on a smaller bed, but it'll take a while to get through enough for a board.
I've attached them to 12 inch self adhesive vinyl floor tiles, using the adhesive side against the plastic. It's not amazing glue so I'll probably have to reglue them at some point, but it works for now.

Glad you like him, and those old eldar sculpts had so much character.

Here's some (not quite so old) eldar sculpts, some Fire dragons from the late 90s:

I got these when GW were phasing out metal models, as they seemed to sling random blister packs into mail orders at the time. I got 2 blister packs of them, so 4 fire dragons, which was less than useful with a minimum squad of 5, and I'm not really a fan of the sculpts so they got relegated to the "I'll do these if I ever need them" pile

Turns out I can use them in the Ynnari combat patrol so I need them
Although as I'm still not a massive fan of the models it was a quick drybrush and wash job. Although I did give them a banner.

The exarch is actually a metal guardian from the support weapon platforms, with a fusion gun added.

Why did I have a random guardian crewman lying around you may ask?

The reason is this guy:

And yes that is a metal gun, so he doesn't balance very well...

I've never understood the idea that there are the souls of some of the best warriors around, who specialised in certain aspects of war, and you stick them in standardised wraithlords, so I decided to build a couple of Aspect wraithlords.

A couple?

Yep, there's this guy too:

I think I have the parts of a striking scorpion one I half built lying around, might need to see if I can find it and finish it off.

With the fire dragons and the storm guardians done, I've got a chunk of the Ynnari combat patrol done. I'm trying to work out who should lead it. Whilst Yvraine would be cool, I would like to keep the whole metal army theme going. I've seen some conversions making Asurmen out of the Visarch model, so I'm tempted to do it the other way around, removing his gun and possibly doing a headswap if people think that would look cool?
Alternatively if anyone has an idea of a metal GW model I could convert into Yvraine I'm all ears!

Dark Reaper Wraithlord is my favorite thing today. Metal Visarch is an intriguing possibility. Not sure what you could use for Yvraine. If you could find a metal Lhamaean or maybe an old Morathi, the one in the dress. Morathi may have too much hair.

Old school Morathi is a good call, she's got quite a lot of hair and an odd crown, but so does Yvarine, so it works. The only problem is I now need to find her an appropriate cat...

The Warp spiders gun is from a (metal) support weapon. The dark reapers missile launcher is bits and pieces of the weapons that come in the wraithlord's box cobbled together with a generous amount of greenstuff to fill the gaps.

I went through a phase where I had a lot of fun with the plastic wriathlords, they're really posable. I've got a couple of half (or less) finished projects around them, and as you liked the finished ones, I thought I would see what state the others are in. Looks like I might need to buy a new one for spares...

So starting from the best condition one:

What's better than space elf ninja clowns?
Undead-cyborg space elf ninja clowns:

He's just missing a shuriken catapult (and a massive grin )

Here's the Striking scorpion one, he's lost a hand and is missing his sword, so I'll need to rummage for those, but otherwise he's not in bad shape:

And then there's this guy...

Yeah he's missing an arm(which I have a spare of) and a leg and his head (which I don't). Hopefully they're just in another box...

However I've otherwise had a productive day, got something old done:

Turns out in 2nd ed orks needed a mob of evil sunz to bring another mek, and I've got 2 extras. I might try and find three more and just run them a squad of evil sunz on foot.

And I got something new done too:

I didn't have an Ultramarine army when I got this guy from the conquest magazine, so I built him up for my Death Watch, but never got around to painting him, but now he's done.

I also made lots of progress on another tactical squad for my blood angels, but ran out of basing paint, and need to have a rummage/scout on eBay for extra banners...

More win on the Eldar wraiths! The scorpion and harlequin look really cool, I hope you manage to find his swords. I’m not sure what the last one is, the long weapon puts me in mind of shining spears, but my Eldar knowledge is limited tbh.

A squad of Evil Sunz mekboyz sounds awesome. They kinda work as old school slugga boys too.

The DW Ultramarine looks cool, the shoulder pad and head swap work well.

And you saved the best ‘til last! All of those classic 2nd Ed Bolter Huggers must be a beautiful sight on your shelves. Shame I don’t have any BAs primed and ready to paint

Your Eldar knowledge might be limited, but you were right

Turns out his missing parts were in the wrong box, along with the striking scorpion's sword, but not his pistol however I have spare.

I also got Narik Dreygur painted up. I managed to snag him cheap a while ago, however he didn't come with a blister or anything so I'm pretty sure he's a recast. But as you can only get him second hand anyway, I'm not too broken up about it. And you never know, he could have been an original...

Now I really want to do an Iron Warrior's 30k force. Maybe after I finish the 40k combat patrols I'll look at doing a small force for each of the legions (when I win the lottery )

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 182 models painted so far this year.

So I've been trying to paint up more models than I buy each month, to make sure I work through at least some of my backlog. Which was fine until Hachette were having and "end of line" sale on the conquest magazine.

Mistakes were made...

So I now have enough marines to do another combat patrol, consisting of a captain, intercessors, hellblasters and inceptors, along side an apothecary and a chaplain...
Might do them as Iron Hands as it'll be quick

I also now own Typhus, 8 more plague marines (to become more emperor's children), 2 Bloat drones (and one on a shelf) and 2 lords of contagion (not sure what to do with them..)

So whilst I wait on basing materials for the Blood angels I've painted, I thought I would finish up some models last night to try and make up for the ones I bought:

So here's some old school (very short) guard ratlings:

And then some Storm troopers:

I did 12 of them as it allows me to run them as a 10 man squad without the heavy weapon team to use them in 9th as scions.

So that's 17 models, which with the others I've painted this month puts me at a positive (of 1...) as long as I don't buy any more models in the next three days...

26/32 Combat Patrols, and 199 models painted so far this year.
