That whole setup is delightful! The colored lights facing the audience are a particularly fun little touch.

I have those barricades-- I use them in Deadzone. I think I have the Orky version somewhere, as well.

That SOB Organ vehicle is ace- very nicely scratchbuilt combined with the standard APC platform: makes it look like the 'factory' version, but with better detail.

For your Ork band, I was thinking more of an electronic keyboards set up a' la the band Cheap Trick, and with barrels pointed towards the audience!

Keep on with your bad self, always fun to come here and see what's new.

Thanks, I did source lighting on the model, but my crappy photo taking can't show it.

I though about other band members, but that stage is too small.

OK, I'm 81% absolutely positively beyond all doubt that I'm done with my ork terrain.
I do not need an ork brewery or Quonset huts or that crashed jet that has been in storage forever.
So, since I am 70% absolutely positively beyond all doubt that I'm done with my ork terrain, I'll work on my trees next.
Here are the pictures of the last piece of ork terrain that I'm absolutely doing for now.
Because I am 58% absolutely positively beyond all doubt that I'm doing trees next.

That GW piece was nice, but it did need more to it.

It was really built out of necessity. At the time GW just wasn't selling sister's vehicles.
The sisters had some very lean years.

I think those would just be big mushrooms.

I've started putting together those Archon Studios trees. They are pretty nice, the company puts out a lot of nice stuff at a good price point.
I have ten trees for $69 bucks and they look great, nice size too. Hopefully by the time I get done with them the weather will have warmed up enough that I will feel safe priming my good miniatures.

Yeah, the mek workshop is really cool, but it's a vignette backdrop more than anything else. would have been cool if GW had followed up with more Ork terrain, like a generic Ork mud hut set or something.

As for SoB vehicles - for some reason I bought another Exorcist many year ago, shortly before it went OOP. Haven't played my SoB since 2013 I think, but somehow I'm still weirdly glad I got two.

blockade23 wrote:Honestly giant mushrooms would be awesome as trees, probably less delicate and way less fiddly I bet.

I've wanted to do large mushrooms for years, but the problem with them is the amount of putty you need for them. If you want them to look nice, you need a decent quality putty, but those get expensive for 10cm tall mushrooms. You could probably buy them premade cheaper.

Yes, that old metal exorcist is one of the most unique models in GW's range.

Here is a picture for scale. The design was originally for a large Kill Krusha tank, so a big engine. Sorry no names.

I need to Photoshop and print up a bunch of old parchment documents to put on the sides.

Thank you sir.

Here are the test colors for my trees. I'm going for fall colors. The yellow is a maple tree and the orange is really an evergreen, but I wanted more fall colors.
Maple trees come in a large variety of shapes and they have one called a sugar cone maple that is roughly evergreen in shape (that is cone shaped).
So with the colors I used, I think it is passable for a maple tree. So I'm happy with how they came out.
I will also be making a few in red and maybe some with a mixture of two colors as some maples don't change colors evenly.
There is one unique tree in the set I think they call it a spirit tree that I will be painting the foliage pink, because why not have one spring color.
The set also came with three dead trees, which I would have preferred to have more maple, they are nice looking.

Thanks, I'm finishing the last of the trees now.

So, the last few trees will be getting custom bases as each tree comes with a stump that double as their base.
I wanted to have a few stand alone stumps by them selves to go with the trees and the custom bases will replace the tree's missing stumps.
I just used tree bark and JB weld Kwik wood putty to make them. It's a lot cheaper than hobby putty and is more than good enough for terrain projects.
They have a bit of a Bonsai look to them now. Maybe I'll achieve zen as I sleep tonight?

Arbor Day!
I now have a tiny forest and a proper game mat. I can finally retire my green felt cloth.
I really like these trees and I'm tempted to get more.

In my continuing archeological digs into my Games workshop repository, I have discovered an arcane item perhaps from the ethoterical times of 4th or 5th edition. I have it primed and I'm thinking of going for a John Ford Western color scheme. Think red bluffs and Monument Valley.

Well, with this, I think I'll be done with terrain for some time.
It's a fairly large piece at around 2 feet or 60 centimeters long.
It might look better with some grass tufs and gravel, but it needs to be stored with the four pieces nesting inside each other.
With the warmer weather, I'll be getting back to my other minis and vehicles.
So, those periwinkle tanks may be next.

The instructions don't state this, but most of the branches are interchangeable, so you can vary the look some.
You can even leave some branches off the trees.

Thanks everyone.
OK, I finally got around to respray painting my tanks. I do generally keep my space marine vehicle pretty clean, so no weathering. I did use a gilders paste wax to highlight the anti-gravity plates and weapons. You just brush it on with a sponge. Very quick and easy. I used to use a very old Ral Partha version that work better, but I ran out a while ago and this is the closest I have found to it. It does leave silver dust all over which the Ral Partha version didn't and you have to seal it with some kind of varnish to keep it from rubbing off on your hands. I'll need to decide what vehicles to get next. I have two unmade Redemptors I'm thinking of getting some conversions so I can magnetize them and switch them between standard, Brutalis or Ballistus. So, that's all for now, thanks for stopping by.

Filigree is Evil: said in the voice of the Grand Theogonist...

Boby G is in the house. It took forever to paint this tiny little man.
In retrospect his base is too busy. If I had to do it over, I think I would have made a custom base instead.
I have a question. I played around with the limited camera settings.
Which setting looks better, default settings or ISO:400 setting ?

Tommygun's mini Ironworks @ 2025/04/25 13:04:35

Post by: Nevelon

First pic looks better IMHO. Not sure which is more color accurate to real life though.

I’ll agree that all the gold filigree was a massive PITA to paint. The base is also busy, but didn’t bother me too much, as I covered a chunk of it with snow.

My phone camera really desaturates my photo's colors while exaggerating the whites. It has four settings for ISO, 100, 200 default, 400 and 800. The white balance is also very limited options. I have a old Nikon, but it drains new batteries dry in just three week while turned off and then you have to go though the whole reprogramming start up each time I want to use it. Maybe I'll just draw pictures of my minis from now on.

I will keep that in mind, but until then more bad camera pictures.
This tech marine is painted in the same speed paint style as my previous tech marine, which I decided afterwards wasn't what I wanted, but I felt the two should match each other.
I have seven other marines primed up, so Calgar and Victrix is next, followed by blade guard and some dude carrying a dead guy on a very fancy stick.

This is what I managed to get painted. Unfortunately my potato camera can't get a good picture of the details.
I have also developed obsessive compulsive disorder, as I now need to check the print bed every 30 minutes as it prints out a 28 hour print of a building.
So, I have several options as to what to do next. I have over a dozen buildings, scatter terrain, vehicles or legally distinct redemptor parts to paint up.
Too many things...too little time...

Welcome to the world of 3d printing! Looks like you’ve already got it working well, but I hear the Bambu Labs printers are pretty awesome out of the box with minimal tinkering. Are those plants 3d printed? Mighty impressive if they are

Thank you, It's fun and addictive. The Bambu mini is stupid simple.
I found a bunch of free plants on Cults if you want to look.

Hey all.
I've been painting a lot, but I haven't been posting. My camera sucks, so I have had little motivation to take bad pictures with it.
So, I did get around to it though. I have a few statue pieces here that I tried using different under colors to achieve different looks to white stone.
I think it came out well. I'd use it again in the future. I'm also working on several buildings for a spaceport. Here are the first two of around a dozen maybe when done.
That's it for now, so glory in my mediocre photonic illustrations.

The pictures are sharp, but the colors are faded out. I'm looking into buying a new cell phone made during this decade, so I have some hope.

I have a few more buildings and terrain pieces painted up, plus almost done with some Blade Guard. So maybe more pic next week.

Thanks, I like doing the statues and I'm looking out for a few more.

OK, I have a new phone camera. It's an upgrade over what I used to have, but the whites are still washed out.
I need to look into what settings it has to see if I can fix that or maybe look into adjustable lights for my work area.

Blade Guard are finished as well as Calgar and his body guard.
I also have a bunch of terrain done, but I don't have an area large enough to photograph it.
So, I may need to invade the guess room to set up a photo shoot.

This is what I have been painting this last month or so. The first picture is the modular terrain.
The walls and terraces can be rearranged as needed. The dome buildings can also be taken apart and changed, although I will not be changing them myself.
The next two building are pretty straight forward. They all have basic interiors, but nothing elaborate. I did very minimal painting of the insides, so nothing worth taking pictures of. I still have three very large buildings to paint as part of the ancient starport. They are like 6 times the surface area of these small buildings, so it is going to take a while to get them done.

That's it for now..see you in 6 months...Oh god I hope it doesn't take that long...

Thank you, I printed it on a filament printer. The bronze was done with Army Painter paints.

1) I start by putting down Amulet Aqua base for the green verdigris.
2) Then apply a very dark bronze color called Death Metal as a very heavy dry brush.
you want to leave the Amulet Aqua to show in the low areas and crevasses.
3) Next a lighter dry brushing of True Copper.
4) Optional: If you want a brighter finish then do more light dry brushing with gold over the copper.
5) Also I used a torn up sponge and stippled on the metallic colors in places to get a better transitions of the colors.

It will be interesting to see if they keep gravis Calgar in the rules, or he and the sword and board guard get discontinued and swept off to legends. With the way 10th attaches characters to squads, having both available makes some sense.

Time will tell.

Well, if they purge the First Born in 11th, hopefully out of that carnage GW will feel they have room in the codex for both.

Thanks Captain, I have more terrain in the works.

Well, I have been painting, here is my Phobos Librarian. I've been wanting one for a long time and I finally have him.
He is just a cool looking mini and one of my favorite ones from the Primaris range.
I also have more scatter terrain and intercessors coming in the next few days.

Theses buildings are big with interiors too. I know the colors I want, but I haven't had the motivation to start them. There is still a large market area and walls to print as well.

Thank you both. I have more alien plants to do eventually.
OK, since I came back to 40k modeling I have picked up around sixty Intercessors from various box sets.
Out of those sixty or so, I have fifteen left. All the others got turned into captains, lieutenants, Sternguard, bikers or various characters, etc.
So now, I have finally painted them up. I kept them based like all my others, but I did play around with a little water effects on one squad.
I also managed to get 30 or 40 other models primed up before the weather gets too cold for priming outside.
Hopefully that will keep me busy through the winter.
Thanks for looking.

Titus is now done, just in time to go to legends...
There is a special place in the Cicatrix Maledictum for the Tzeentch marketing team at GW who plans this all out.

Up next is a squad of Assault Intercessors.
Hopefully they will not go to legends when GW brings back all 20 primarchs and all new custodes/psyker space marine armies.

Appreciated Captain.

Next group up, assault intercessors. It's a group of eleven with a second Sergeant, so I can field them as a 10 man squad or a as two 5 man teams. I made up some simple cork bases and modeled them to look like broken concrete. It's very simple, but I think looks nice. More marines coming in the next few days as well. After that I think I'll go back to painting buildings to try and get the starport finished.

I live in fear of that question. That's a bunch to unpack and repack. I'll see what I can do in the coming week, but Thanksgiving is also next week so it might get delayed.

So, I got to thinking about what's left to do with space marine models I have right now and here is my list:
15 Sternguard.
15 Infiltrators
10 Incursors
3 Suppressors (very low priority as I think they are going to Legends)
2 Redemptors They are going to be fully magnetized with some 3D printed parts so they can be made into the three current variants.
1 Librarian
2 custom Lieutenants with shields and power swords. They were originally going to be company champions before the rules for war gear changed for those. That is, no more shields for champions.
5 or 6 old unmade Firstborn bikes that I can mod into Primaris bikers.
I also have two unmade Whirlwinds I am going to set aside for now. If they go to Legends, they my get turned into burned out terrain, as I have a large number of magnetized Rhino variants.

The first half of next year may see me working on Sisters and Krieg. I printed up a number of nice Chimera proxies I'm excited to paint up in First World War French colors. There is also those custom cavalry Sisters and Zephyrim I converted I need to get back to.

It only took me 3.5 to 4 hours last time I got my Ultras out for pics, and some of that was spent dusting the display cabinet. There are worse ways to spend a lazy weekend morning.

I feel you are right about the suppressors. I like em, but they are on a shared sprue that’s how old now?
I need to make some Lt.s myself.

Looking forward to seeing what you paint next!

I appreciate the encouragement guys.

These are a few of the models I mentioned earlier. The two former company champions turned lieutenants are first.
I have bits from four different editions of Warhammer on them. I think they used to have special rules for those mini-storm shields back in 4th or 5th ED?
The first two vehicles will be chimera/hellhound proxies. I really don't like the official chimeras. The Hellhound look better as it did get an update, but did the chimera ever get one?
The last one is a totally generic sci-fi M113 fire support vehicle that I just found laying on the ground outside on the street years ago.

This will be the last group of minis for a while. A squad of Aggressors and one of Inceptors, both fully magnetized.
Frankly, I wish GW would get away from data sheets that force you to magnetize your minis.
The weather got good enough that I was able to prime one of the big buildings I posted a picture of earlier.
So, this week when I'm not prepping for Thanksgiving I'll try and find time to work on painting it.

Why magnetize when you can just buy 2 boxes? I considered magnetizing aggressors but it just seems like a ton of work. I just built them all with bolters. And will probably do so with the next 3 on my to-build list. I’m sure there will be situations where I’d want to put the flamers into a list, but the things are irritating enough to build/paint without the extra work. I’ve only build the jump guys from the 8th starter with bolters, so have no idea how hard that kit is to mag. But also, in a world without points for wargear, why not plaama?

Good call on the wire stands for the jump guys. So much hate for those curved jump stands.

Looking good!

Edit: Combat shields didn’t have the same invuln as a full storm shield (it may have only been a 6++, might have been 5) but didn’t take the hand, so you could still get an extra attack for pistols/paired weapons.

That's pretty much their thinking. If you leave the ammo chutes or hoses off the Aggressors, magnetizing isn't too bad.

I do my best Captain.

This building painted up much faster than I thought, so hoping the other two go as well. I like how it came out, I used what you could call autumn colors as I did with the other buildings in the series. It's a pleasing palette and best of all it's not gray. I try and never do gray buildings if possible. I feel gray buildings, unless done very well, tend to look, as least to me, as unfinished gray primed terrain. That's all for now.

The tower is awesome- the turquois wash to simulate verdigris/weathering really makes it pop.

Thank you both.

Well, I made several purchases for a future project this week. I have the Ultramarines Upgrades and Transfers set, a multi color micro marker pack and 2 Dawn of War board games. The micro markers are for trying to do multi-color purity seals writing. I've been doing the seals in all black and I want to try and do something like an old medieval manuscript on them. The 2 Dawn of War board games are the ones with the Honor of the Chapter minis in them for $50; Barnes & Noble has it for $40. They will give me bodies to use up all the extra bits you get with the new Victrix guard box set. The Bladeguard Ancient will become the standard bearer and the Primaris Chaplain with be turned into the Company Champion. The three extra Victrix heads, some power axes from Kromlechand a few bits fom my bits box will turn the Blade Guard into three more Victrix Guard. I may also try to use some Greenstuff to make cloaks. The rest of the minis will let me fill out my Blade Guard and Eradicator Squads on the cheap. I just need to order the Victrix box now.

Just to be clear, it's a 3D printed APC that some people think looks like a Gladiator Impulsor; that I totally didn't print on my Bambu printer at home, because GW likes to sue people.

I'm going to clear lacquer a group of minis today, so pictures of them soonish.

But most of all wow for those 3d prints. The flowers/garden look stunning but the buildings look amazing and love the turquoise weathering on the bottom!!

Your plans for the Victrix and heroes set sounds solid (I almost wish they would sell that dawn of war box over here in the UK as it is amazing value for money!) im interested to see how they all turn out!

The 3d gladiator looks spot on, and the proxy chimerias look like good variant to the standard design.

I appreciate your kind words Jordy. I have a fairly fast painting method. It won't earn me any painting awards, but I think it makes for a nice table quality mini.
Specking of which, more minis done.
I have a better camera, but I still need to figure out lighting with it as it does wash out some colors like yellow on the Liberian.

Two Eradicator squads done. I converted two of them into multi-meltas, the same way I converted the first Honor of the Chapter box a few pages back. I should have been working on buildings, but I was excited to get working on those Dawn of War boxes. So, now I'm waiting on the Victrix Honour Guard, Saturnine Terminators and a Heresy melee weapons upgrade box to come in.
While I wait very impatiently, I will paint one of those buildings. I will damn it.

Oh also, I changed the lighting for the pictures...and they still suck.
