Hey Dakka,

I am starting this blog on Dakka to try to record my progress on the Modelling-Mayhem force and get more feedback and idea's. So your welcome to hit subscribe at the bottom of this page!

Anyways enough rambling on and welcome to my Blog for the poor Footslogger. I hope you enjoy following it over the next few... Ermmm... Decades by the time I finish this army :-S

'Bring forth the Chimera, and know no fear!'

So here it is, the start of the Modelling-Mayhem Imperial Guard army. Feel free to add your comments and input as well as add what you would like to see me add to the army next.

Anyway time to get on with the modelling! In pic 1 you will see a Chimera Transport, the only work done on this for purpose of this pic is just clipping, cleaning and assembling.

Next up will be more progress on the Chimera Transport. In pic 2 the Chimera has had the Lascannon replaced with an Autocannon to give it more of a tank look! It's had a bit of Greenstuff popped on for good measure into the cracks to fill these awful things!

I have now drilled out the Heavy Bolter and the actual Autocannon turret - see pic 3 - to make it that little bit more realistic. I have made the turret still be able to swivel as well as adding the hatch to the turret and also making it so this could swivel too, courtesy of some spare sprue. The Pic Below is a close up of the Autocannon pre-drilled.

Pic 4 is a photo of the turret and stubber, as well as the bolter after it has all been drilled. Sorry for the not so clear pictures, the girlfriend dropped her camera whilst on a night out so it is currently getting fixed. When it's fixed I will upload better images for all to see.

Pic 5 is the stubber drilled out and the support rail drilled too.

Now all thats left to do is customise it up a bit and add some personal touches before giving it a lick of paint

Enough for today though so stay tuned to this frequency...

Looks like a good start. I particularly like the split Guard insignia across the front of the 2 trackguards.

One niggle for me though is that the vent holes to the stubber should not go all the way through. They are designed to allow air in to cool the barrel shroud beneath, not to allow the propellant escape before the bullet leaves the barrel

Flinty thanks for the feedback and yes your right, the stubber vent holes were drilled through that little to far :S and I shall have to fix this with the old Greenstuff!

The split guard insignia is great and it looks even better now it is painted up to.

Progress update.

So I got some paint down on the Chimera Transport and will be adding a few custom bits to give it a much more pleasant look as it rolls along the battlefield! Games Workshop left this fantastic vehicle far to plain and simple, so I am going to change that.

Pic 1 is of the Chimera after being primered with Adeptus Battlegrey followed by a basecoat of Vallejo Game Color Cayman Green. Again sorry for the pic quality I am still using the camera on my phone as the digital camera is still being repaired.

Then next up I gave the edges a very fine hard edge highlight which can be seen in pic 2 using a mix of 5 parts Cayman Green and 3 parts Skull White. I applied this hard edge highlight using the side part of a brush. I also - as you can probably make out - have painted the imperial wings and skull using Adeptus Battlegrey as a basecoat followed by several thin layers of Skull White leaving the darker shade in the recesses.

I haven't painted any of the main details yet like weapons and lenses. I will get to this at a later stage. So enough for now. Next up Day 3...

So progress update... I have now got all the hard edge highlighting completed minus a few tidy ups, I have also got the turret painted up - again minus the weapons which will be painted at a later stage. Picture below of this progress.

This is slightly clearer than previous pics so I hope it's good enough for you to look at.

Now progress still ahead, I will be painting the Imperial Aquilla on the turret as well as lenses and neccessary battle damage in the next stage, as well as applying a wash of Vallejo Sepia to the recesses, then tidying any rough bits up. The next stage then will be to add custom bits as well as maybe a bit of Greenstuff.

I'm also thinking about trimming off the lascannons on the rear sides and replacing them with trimmed down versions of the Las Rifles the Guard are issued with! Any thoughts?

Thats it for now though check out updates in Day 4...

Progress Report...

So yesterday I managed to get a slight bit of work done on the Chimera, the lenses are now painted (but not glossed). I painted the heavy bolter and I made the Cadia gates badge out of greenstuff!! Not that great a try either im afraid! I got a few other things completed on the Chimera too, like badges painted up and the weapons are all now nearly finished being painted, once this is complete I should then - by the end of today - have the tracks painted and weathered too!

Pic is a front shot of the Chimera to display lenses and badges... Again I am still waiting for the camera to be returned so I am still using the phone im afraid!

Anyways more work to follow soon...

1x Valkyrie

2x 'Counts as' Sentinel vehicles to make up in 40k - because GW Senti's look to much Star Warsy for my liking, not that I dislike Star Wars of course. These are very cool - pics soon

1x ATV 'Counts as' Rough Riders - again I really dislike GW's Horseback hun!! this was made out of 2 Space Marine Scout Bikes.

1x Command Squad

1x Platoon Command Squad

4x Platoon Squads

AND! A dozen more other things to keep me busy for a while with the short model time I have available!!

Regards

MM

Xenon thanks for the feedback. I am particularly happy with how the lenses turned out! It's just a shame that the camera is of poor quality!!

I have however managed to get some converting work and other bits completed on my stand in sentinels and my ATV quad also. Pics of this will follow.

For now thats all...

Neat! Do you plan on adding Battle Damage, or keeping them Factory Fresh? I find Battle Damage makes them more intimidating, but Factory Fresh is, well, Fresh, and that's reassuring to see on the Table as well. It's a 'Grunts versus Glory Boys' Argument.

Loving the ATV! Fantastic concept for a Counts-As. What did it involve? It looks like a Conversion to me, as opposed to a Stand-In Mini?

Post by: modelling-mayhem

Popsicle - I really do intend on adding battle damage as I like the look of surviving onslaught after onslaught and dont like fresh crispy looking tanks lol.

That said we do have massive plans for this blog but it's getting round to getting them completed. But battle damage will be added at a later date sir. Maybe after their first battle.

Also finally things have quietened down at home with people moving out etc so alot more painting time for me! Providing the better half is not around

Regards

Tim

Popsicle - The ATV is indeed a conversion. It comprises of a kit bash and some chopping of sorts on 2 Space Marine Scout Bikes with some spare sprue length thrown in for good measure as axles and support struts.

Munch Munch - Thanks for your comment, the Guardsmen do indeed have different helmets - with gasmask.

We purchased them from the guys over at pigiron productions. These are simply the best gas mask heads I have had the pleasure of painting.

So in the pic below we have a better pic of the Cadia gates badge on the Chimera. The greenstuffed skull was W**K! So I have now replaced this with a skull trimmed off of the Sentinel Missile Launcher.

Also shown here is the 'counts as' Senti with Missile Launcher.

P.S. Also does anyone know how to place multiple pics in 1 post seperated by text? As it keeps listing the pics at the end of my rantings! I dont want to keep creating seperate posts for them!

Where did you get the models that you are counting as sentinels? If I were going to field these (and I might, that is why am asking where you got them.) I would play them as tauros assault vehicles.

MeatShield - The Tauros assault vehicles are stunning models and at some point I would dearly love to paint one . As for the 'counts as' Senti's you can find these models dirt cheap from a guy called Jez at Old Crow Models - or http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/

Hope that helps

Scrazza - I was trying to go for the U.N style look for this force! Bad choice? Or shall I change the helmet colour? lol.

Who thinks colour change for helmets? Anyone! Everyone! No-one!...

Just Scrazza then yes?

Cheers for your comments and input Scrazza

I kind of agree with scrazza about those helmets.

UN troops have light blue helmets becuse so they can be reconized as peacekeapers. That way insurgents can see they are no threat to them and they are there to protect and help civilians and prevent crisis.

I don't know if there could be such a organisation in 40k world. Have you tought about it? I mean if you have a plan to make "UN" or somekind of "National Guard" based army you could think about the backround and tell us more about it. That could justify the light blue helmets.

But if you just planned to make just normal Imperial guard army who just kicks some bad guys ass and happens to have light blue helmets then I think you should maybe change the colour. Light blue colour would make them very visible to a enemy. It would be like "Shoot here sign" for the enemy.

But again on the other hand there are many IG regiments that are wearing strange coloured pieces of armour and uniform. And you could also connect the light blue colour to navy or air force etc. for example?

But tell us what you are after and maybe we could give you some ideas.

Agreed with Xenon, if you want them as a PeaceKeeping (PK) army, ready to quell some mutant rebellion, then light blue's fine!!!

Maybe if they're conscripts ?!? To make them stand out as target practice? lol...

No seriously, if think they're good, but definitely shout "PK operations ongoing", which may cause fluff issues to some guys around here... That's your call!

Imperial Guard Army Blog UPDATE AND LOTS PICS 13/04/2011. @ 2010/07/24 18:49:40

As far as National Guard armies in 40k go, they already exist - just they go by the term 'Planetary Defence Force' - or PDF for short. The role of the PDF is solely to sit back and get drunk and play childish games whilst waiting for sometimes decades or even a lifetime - or maybe never - to fire a las round.

And as for the role of a peace keeping force in 40k - I do agree it is an impossible role in both fluff and on the table. That said I was never trying to adopt a PK force or use them in this role . I just kinda liked the idea of a U.N style looking army . After all we have had countless American forces rip offs and coast guard armies and what ever else ones imagination can warrant! However I for one have never on Dakka came across a UN styled force - if there is sorry for my ignorance .

Thanks for the input though guys I do appreciate it

If you like the idea then go for it. The most of all you need to be happy about your models. If you are going with U.N. looking army have tought about painting your tanks white like UN troops?`

Post by: Munch Munch!

I think the UN idea is a nice one.But maybe put less of it? And maybe on the shoulder pad. Rebellions in the 40k universe last years, and you don't want to walk around with a bright blue symbol that says your against the rebellion.

Imperial Guard Army Blog UPDATE AND LOTS PICS 13/04/2011. @ 2010/07/25 09:23:36

Post by: modelling-mayhem

As far as tanks and other military hardware painted white in the U.N way, is completely off the table! Reasons:

1) White is a W**K colour to try and paint perfect. Especially on such a large canvass!

2) These would stand out more than the little blue helmets.

3) See the 2 above, then any questions that follow consult again the first 2!

On a serious note though, I do like the idea - it is unique and, at this time I think I will stick with blue helmets! Sorry guys its the way I roll That said however I will probably get to painting the 40th helmet and think 'ah crap blue is bad' And then consult you guys again for colour input lol at which point you all say ''bugger off'' and ''we told you so''. HAPPY DAYS!

Also I've attached a pic just to keep the picture people happy It's of the regiment that is assembled so far. Still to assemble and put on the table is:

1x Cadian Command squad box - I have no clue what I will do with these at the mo. (IDEA's!)

1x Catachan Command squad box - I have no clue what I will do with these at the mo. (IDEA's!)

1x Cadian Shock Troops box - possibly acting as Vets!

2x Catachan Jungle Fighters box

1x Hellhound

1x Basilisk

1x Leman Russ

2x Manticore/Deathstrike

Thats it I think at the moment. Thanks for reading.

Love the ATV rough riders ( I agree the hun type horse riders suck, its a real trial to a decent alternative)

I've also used the pigiron gasmask heads they truly add flavour to the cadian bodies and I think they fit better than the hydrochephalic heads they come with

Good luck with the army I'll keep watching if only to see if you keep the blue helmets

I'm pretty sure that as long as you tell your opponent what a particular model represents and that it makes sense, ie a sniper has a sniper rifle not a pistol, you should be fine

Blackhand - The term Ratlings is used to its full meaning by your unit, I like

Was doing a bit of digging earlier and to my knowledge U.N vehicles are not always white. Found a couple of pics from Somalia where they are camo'd up completely Maybe one does not need to change the colour of one's nicely done Chimera after all

Everything looks great! As for the ratlings, I agreee that the hobbits dont really do it for me. What about some remote controlled vehicles? Like the small units used by the military today? Like this...

Maybe get ahold of some EPIC scale land raiders for the treads and such?

LOL! OK so I have decided to go for green as sleeping on it last night made me realise how crap blue is! Even when washed with badab black to tone vibrancy down to 40k level!!!

So the result is - Blue helms lasted 2 days! I finished my first Guardsman fully yesterday, all thats left to do is base him - but this will be done when I base the whole squad!

Thanks for input guys, but the main reason behind the colour change was because the girlfriend said the blue is poncey! Which was rich coming from a cupcake loving pink minded woman! Still HAPPY DAYS!

Not at all! Over the course of the next few days I'm going to come up with some fluff for these guys!

The regiment will consist of both Cadian & Catachan models. So the fluff may be that the both are fighting together on some backwater, far off chaos infested planet! Or I may think about making a completely new regiment based off these 2 sets of models!

Well the way I kinda want to go fluff wise with these guys is something along these lines:

They are 2 seperate forces - Catachan and Cadian that were sent to free a world from chaos infestation. After 12 long years at war and becoming victorius, both regiments man power stood at a shocking low. So - as with what sometimes happens in the imperium, the 2 regiments (or what was left of them) remained on the planet to defend it and regain their numbers by recruiting from the planets population. As this planet now becomes that regiments own, and the officers from the regiments become noble's.

I guess thats just kind of rough typings though!! We shall develope it further soon-ish!!

Thanks for the ideas and praise . I got 5 Guardsmen finished today with the other 5 just needing Hard Edge HL, then happy days. All to do then is base them... Hmmmm, now how to go about getting the perfect basing!

Pics to follow tomorrow, as I am now sitting down to a nice alcoholic beverage and takeaway

Basing? I say stick with the cool chinese restaurant them you have going on in the last pic

What ever you go with don't use static flock! so cliche.

What did you decide on for a planet type?

Ruined temple?

There is a great eldar army which the creator has a basing tutorial in the tutorial section for creating really amazing "lost paradise" style temple/city bases. I think that might look pretty cool.

You will have to de-base then re-base all your models to do it though, but that should be relatively easy with a sharp enough knife.

LOL that chinese was good! As you can probably tell my model workboard gets all kinds of scribbles! Its what I call customisation

Also as you can see in the background Blackhand, I have static grass lol however that said it is only for slight grass crops not a whole base of grass. As that would look far out pathetic!!

As for the planet type I'm still kinda thinkin on that one.

Kind of thinking former planet reappearing from the warp and the imperium having been sent to mop it up! At which point the 2 regiments sent get near on obliterated but successfully complete the task at hand! Due to suffering severe casualties they get given the planet to guard/defend and recruit from! So has to have's:

a chaos setting!

unfriendly atmosphere - hence the gas masks - kind of want something along lines of coloured zones set up for contaminated areas. i.e Red Zone - bad, Green Zone - good etc!

thats all the brain is capable of thinkin so far! I need more Tea

Silver - de basing the mods are not an issue as they are only tacked on in 1 spot Have you got a linky to that basing tut?

Regards

Link added to my last post.

You could probably trade the lush green and sparkling blue for yellows, browns and dirty greens for a polluted garden world, gone to chaos?

If you check out the guy's army, you can see more of his bases. I seem to remember some of them are really cool - plus they work well if you ever want to make a display base, as they would fit right in.

I have some of that plasticard!

I think a mix of tiles, rock and broken statuary would give the feel of a recovered daemon world pretty well.

I have seen a guy use a bunch of statue molds with plaster, then smash the statues and use the pieces on his bases.

Sorry can't think of where I saw it though

No worries. I'm sure I've seen the broken statue bases around somewhere as well - they looked pretty cool.

I know maelstrom games (yes, yes, I know they are the enemy for you ) has some basing kits which contain bits of broken statues (can't remember the company that makes them though at the moment) if you didn't want to go and find somewhere to buy the right scale statue moulds/plaster/etc.

scibor miniatures does the resin statue bits, but as much as I like them I think you need more variety, bits of masonry and stone block as well as statue bits, just my 2cents

I would agree with Blackhand - broken masonry, toppled walls etc would really kick things up a notch.

Hirst Arts do all sorts of fun moulds that can provide you with neat little details too, but sadly there are few UK retailers of their moulds

Finch Claw - As far as flocking goes, the bases will have a few strands of electrostatic grass applied yes! However, the rest of the base will be custom made with plasticard and good old greenstuff thrown in for good measure plus some other bits of odd stuff one can get his hands on!!

Hmmmmmm Hirst Arts. Will have my colleague look into this!

It's... OK. But I think you might need to put a bit more time and planning into your bases

It also looks quite thick.

Try adding some brush on gloss varnish to the water to give it a bit more "wetness".

Is the "land" concrete paving slabs? I was not quite sure.

If you don't want to use plasticard, good quality paper card can be used to make pretty good tiles/slabs.

Blackhand - I guess I will look into grabbing some of this plasticard on order today

Anyways, attention back to the 1st squad. I have 8 completely finished (minus a few custom things to be added - Like ammo clips and 'nades etc) and flocked and 2 left to HL and flock! My next question is though this - What damn colours to use to paint these bases? I have 1 base thats basecoated with Adeptus Battlegrey and was thinking maybe drybrush with Codex Grey followed by very light dusting of Bleached Bone? Yes or No?

Anyways I'm chuffed with how this squad has turned out really and each has their own dynamic pose! Nothing worse than the same pose for a whole army!?

Will get some pics attached to this message in half an hour, I just wanted to get some text down and out of the way first

Well, if you have a ruined/daemon world returned to real space, you could probably add in some reds or greens? Certainly a bit of brown mud/dirt.

The general concrete style base you described sounds good, just have to be careful not to make it too boring

I was kinda thinking maybe throw in some dashing of snow as well?

I know I want it to look like a ruined daemon world returned to space but I thought the winter warp storm setting would be great?

This involves lots of concretes, muds, grass and snow! With possibly the odd chaos stuff thrown on for good measure!!

Thoughts?

Might be hard to tie it all together without it looking like your models were caught in an explosion in a basing supplies shop

You also need something which fits in with your model colours too. The green and bone colours of their armour/fatigues would go well with several colours of base I think, but you may need to be selective as to which environments are represented in each base.

It might be an idea to rather than base them all as individuals, to imagine them actually on some kind of battlefield (perhaps sketch one out on some paper?) which has all the different terrain features on it that you want to be reflected in your bases.

I dont like the colour scheme either but I was torn between so many idea's of where I wanted to go with this force and what colours and how this, and like that's!! So I thought lets dumb it down and go for simples!

The planet setting obviously is as follows:

Unnamed Planet just entered real space (well 12 years previous it entered) after disappearing into the warp a millenia ago. After 12 long years of fighting and trying to rid the chaos infestation from this planet still defrosting from the warp winter, the Imperial Guard finally emerged victorious but have had the 2 regiments numbers near on annihilated!

I have gone with a winter-ish style basing to hold to the fluff of the planet defreezing from leaving the warp! So this means the bases has lots of snow grass and dirt etc! Trying to give a snow thawing Spring if you like??

The bases are good! And I know people will think why winter bases and green camo men!?

The reason I have done this is because I wanted to show a Spring style environment with the snow thawing... This would warrant the green camo fatigues.

Going for a chaos style setting so I have been playin around with bits and pieces salvaged from the garden to make chaos bits! I will upload more pics 2moro morning! :-S

So I seem to have modelling block - if there is such a thing! I sat last night, staring into the bitz box while surrounded by Greenstuff and Catachans! To my amazement nothing was conjured up! No extreme thoughts! No cool idea's! Just plain old blankness rattled between the ears! In fact it was so quiet in my head I could hear the dust settling!! Not good!?

So in the end I gave in staring into infinity and put some wintery weathering to the Chimera as well as some extra bits! So I think I have my Chimera ready for battle scarring now. Pics are below, so as always C&C welcome folks.

Not bad at all, I have noticed that Dakka has tides of posting, I think related to the whether or not regular posters on your forums are sleeping or working and the weekends can be quiet at times due to gaming and drinking

I like the snow, it's not too much that it overpowers the paintjob and it will tie in nicely with the basing you have done.

On the catachans, how are your GS skills? I am thinking that a bunch of bare armed and bare chested soldiers may not do too well in snowy-spring setting and may need a few furs or cloaks to keep them warm, painted in greys and white they may even help tie them further to the basing?

Just a thought

Maybe you could try and find some Mordheim Middenheimer sprues, they have a lot of wolf furs on them...

Also like the snow, it seems about to melt, which is quite nice... And you managed to resist the urge to cover it snow-white!!!

Pics of this soon.

Anyways some other progress I managed was a few home made shotguns and my Veteran Squad assembled and ready for painting! This squad will eventually carry 6 Shotguns, 1 power fist and a plasma pistol, 1 Plasma gun, 1 Sniper Rifle and 1 weapon I'm still debating on!? Check out the pics...

I love the way none of your guard have a static pose, looks great! I know how fiddly it gets from first hand experience
Good choice going from blue helmets to green, I would have said try purple just so you'd have a platoon of purple headed warriors

For someone who says they can't do bases, that water base looked pretty damn good! Give it a watered down wash of that whachamacallit blue wash and it would look like he was on a beach But instead of drowning in water, he might drown in the corpses of his squad

Keep it up! I'll be checking up on your progress

The water base was lame!! lol but thanks for your kind input!

As for the last weapon, they'll most probably get engaged in HtH, so why not invest in a Heavy flamer?!? That'd soften up their prey a bit, uh...

Hello Dakka,

I dont know if it is permitted to comment back on this thread but I will soon be adding more pics and updates on this thread, so thought I would let the fans read up to refresh once again.

I haven't had chance over the past few months to add any progress to the army but all will be changing over the next few nights as I will try to rekindle my love affair with this great and peaceful hobby.

I apologise if this is frowned upon for updating an old thread but kind of thought because I am the author I would get away with it.

Also for those folk in the UK looking to grab a bargain you should check out my start at 99p model auctions over on ebay where you can grab brand new still sealed mini's for a great bargain. I have popped a new thread with a link to this in the swap shop section. Be sure to check it out.

For now regards to you all and hopefully you will accept my lonesome self back into your fantastic community - This time bearing civvy clothes :(

I love this thread. Very clean and neat painting style that I don't know if this describes it well but very GW'ey in that the models are super clean and nice looking, sorta like they just got off the landing craft rather then have been doing what guard usually do for weeks.

Awesome use of bits and i can't wait to see more.

So after finishing work and getting back home tonight, I have managed to find a spare 5 minutes to get some pictures taken of my 98% completed Chimera.

Now I say 98% complete, because there are a few little details to add - i.e some text to the side scrolls and some battle scarring.

As always C&C much appreciated.

iheartlargeblasttemplates - The snow is not everyone's cuppa tea. So thank you for your input. I will say however the mistake I made whilst photographing is using the flash. This has not done the tank and snow justice.

If your reference of glass is to the lens then thank you. The lens turned out better than I could have imagined. Im not the best painter in the world and have been improving slowly over the past few years and following other peoples blogs and tips has allowed me to slightly improve my skills.

For those still following there will be piccy updates soon, and for those not following - please follow and give C&C. This will then help me get motivated to complete so many idea's.

Let's see those pics! Everything is looking great. I like the snow on the tank, it gives the impresion that the snow is melting off as the interior heats up.

So I painted up a Son of Orar marine over the Bank Holiday and for the life of me could not perfect the white!

So the white ended up being painted over red and now am ready for Blood Angels instead :S oh well a company for my Space Hulk Termies atleast...

I have 1x Death Company primed and ready and 1 x Tac Marine fully painted and waiting to be based - Which I have no clue of what to do at moment!

I am currently back in work :( but as soon as I get home tonight I will get picture of Tac Marine uploaded for C&C.

Until then sorry for the update with no pics again - Just trying to keep you guys interested and will provide pics later today - PROMISE

Regards

So, as promised from earlier, here are some pics of my 'TEST' mini. This is in no way GD standard or near any neat standard that I can usually paint.

This was completely painted through speedily so that I could have a general idea on where I wanted to go with my test colours.

(Yes I know that it has not been given 100% paint coverage and yes I can see the white primer underneath. Also, Yes the Red does look thick in places - although my paints are watered thin... This is because as far as test mini's are concerned, they are generally from projects before which have been painted already, or picked up real cheap off flea-bay. You guys know the drill )

Without further ado...
