This is my first post, so I'm going to introduce myself. I have been playing wargames a long time ago. Saddly I haven't got too much time for that (work and girldfriend consumes most of it...), but the little free time I have I dedicate to my hobby. (Sorry for my english...)
This post is for showing my project of creating a true scale Deatwatch space marine. It has to be said that is my first time with green stuff. Any advise is welcome.
I didn't want to create an extremly big (and fat) SM, so I haven't use any terminators part. The figure's model is just an assault space marine, but with elongated arms and legs. Then I filled out with green stuff the gaps, and give a larger volume in the chest (as well as in arms and legs). This way, the SM looks taller but also stronger.
This photo is for another SM, but it shows the modifications I talked above.
The pose is based on Inquisitor's Brother Artemis:
http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1184231_99111399002_INQArtemisMain_873x627.jpg
So here it goes the WIP:
I prefer the no helmeted head.
Now I'm working on both arms. If I can get some feedback I'll be very grateful. And of course I will answer any questions.

Good night!
After the football match, a minor update. I added the arms and some details. I specially like the big that the armour looks, a big body inside a bigger armour.

True scale looks really good, I'm not a fan of the Terminator true scale use either. Keep up the amazing job.
On another note: Congrads on the win by your boys, that was one hell of a game.

First off, congrats on the win!
Also don't worry about your English, it's fine. It's also much better than some English-speaking members on Dakka.
Third, I really like the look of these guys. Was never a huge fan of true scale but these guys have a lot of character to them, keep it up.

Any way you get to a "Truescale" is fine by me, if it is executed well.
The "terminator" method, greenstuff, whatever!
And yours look quite nice indeed!
I am very much looking forward to more!

This is the only truescale marine that doesn't look like a Terminator, therefore the only one I really like. And yes, your English is better than some English speakers here.

Great Job!
Nice looking models so far, will there be 5 eventually?
Wow, I didn't realize the hateration by many Dakkaites towards the 'terminator' method of making marines look bigger, but I'm gonna agree with Alpharius whatever's clever is what I always say
...well maybe not always, and probably not that often actually, come to think of it...mumble...

Very nice work! Great job on the GS, looks great!
You've captured the pose really well, he looks really dynamic which isn't something that is eazy using terminators as a base.
Hashshashin: I hope they don't hate it, I was the one that invented the method.
31215
Post by: jaime7784
Thank you all guys for your opinions.
Schiznas, Vladsimpaler, Tim the Biovore: Thanks! I'm pleased that you like it.
Alpharius: I agree with you, if it's well executed, it doesn't matter what method is used.
As I wanted a dynamic pose I didn't use termi's legs. Termis and tactical SM legs are in an strange pose, with their legs too separeted, like if they got big balls (at face value).
The arms choice is simply because I prefer them, termi's ones aren't the same as standard SM armour ones.
I have to say that your true scale marines are great
Hashshashin: Actually it's only a marine, the photo shows 3 different angles. I'm working on another, and maybe there will be an entire kill team...
doghouse: I have just see your Scythes of the Emperor marine, I really like it!! I think the arms have been done as I did.

Post by: doghouse
I've found that the best way to do the arms is use the regular marine arms and then sculpt over them slightly.
The trick is to make them level with the cuff on the wrist to avoid the t-rex look.
Loving what you have so far mate, seriously nice work and I can't wait to see him get some paint on him when he's finished.
For a first timer with green stuff you've done a fantastic job.
Are you going to build a squad?
31176
Post by: Zydragon
Niiiice, good skills you have there
31215
Post by: jaime7784
Thanks Zydragon.
doghouse: Thanks again. I have another marine's body waiting to get some green stuff (the first photo in this post). And today I have been planning another one, a deathwatch marine from space wolves, armed with claws. I just ordered some bits. So it can be said that there's going to be a squad (5 men?)
Today too much work, there's no much to update. The only thing is that I have changed the right shoulder pad, now it's from the Ultramarines chapter. I have also placed the backpack, but it's not glued yet. It's big enough, or it seems very small?
I have also taken a picture for size comparision purposes with (both half-painted) Corbulo and a Space Hulk termi. Take into account that the deathwatch marine is leaning forward.

Post by: jaime7784
Good night,
As I told yesterday, I'm planning a full deathwatch kill team, and today I started a new marine. It's going to be a space wolf with lighting claws in a pose like wolverine from x-men. I will try to post something like a step-by-step.
First I have made the legs. They came from SM assault squad. I have cut them to add some height to the figure, and also by the half to create the pose.
The second step is cutting the belt and the tubes from the torso. I place a wire through it to attach it more easy to the legs, and later for placing the head. Between the legs and the torso I will place som green stuff in order to gain more height.
Then I made the arms by cutting the hand with the claw and attaching it to a standard space marine arm.
These are the finished pair:
And finally everything attached:
The next step is going to be to fill it with green stuff to gain volume... Tomorrow will be another day.
thanks for reading, and don't hesitate to criticize or give any kind of opinion, that will help me to improve.

Post by: jaime7784
First of all.... World Cup winners!!! It has been very exicting!!!
After the point, and going on with the project:
Finally the bits have arrived, so I continued working with the first SM. I have removed a terminator's assault bolter clip, and I have attached it to a bolter. I saw this in the Storm Wardens project ( http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2010/06/40k-hobby-building-sternguard-veteran.html). I have also attached an scope and a strip.
And this is how the SM looks with the bolter in the hand:
Still need more details and a decored base. I'm also working on different backpacks to choose the best looking one.
I would apreciate some feedback, good night and thanks for reading.

Those are excellent. The Termiscale ones do sometimes have problems, like the arm tubes, this is a really good (and presumably cheaper?) method...

azekio: I think that devastators backpacks will be too big, but I will keep it in mind, thanks.
DapperAnarchist: Maybe the bits are cheaper, but you have to use more green stuff, wich takes more time of modelling...

Hi!
I have been working on different backpacks, and this is the one I really liked. It still needs lots of detailing.
On the other hand, I have been adding details to the SM. The vertical one is going to be the Inquisition symbol. I think it is going to be placed in both shinbones
As you can see, I have removed the base since I'm working on a datiled one. As vodo40k said, this way the SM will gain more height, and also more prominence.

Great work! Your TS method is a good 'un, and looks very natural. Way to go.
Gotta say that the pack looked okay to me, so if you want to save time you could skimp on that.
Also, have you considered casting some of the parts that you will want to use as standard, like backpacks and torsos? I can see redoing leg poses and arms each time, but if you're doing 10 it might pay to have the other stuff molded up.

I have painted the base, added a bolt pistol and hand grenades to the belt. I have also placed the left hand with the shield, and some rivets in the left leg and in the neck armour plate.
TODO things before painting: some inquisition symbols in the shield and right leg, purity seals, ... suggestions?

Hey these look great. Altho Im a little confused with what True Scale is supposed to mean. Wouldnt GW's own Creations Be cannon? I do think bigger and better models looks cooler dont get me wrong. Another Question... given all the models ive seen of Space marines they seem to be in a type of squat stance? could this be the reason they dont look so tall?
Anyways Awesome Green Stuff work. Could you possibly send me a tutorial? Anything Green Stuff. I could do with the research. Cheers

Space marine miniatures aren't to scale comparing with other human models, so true scaling is an attemp to make them "as they should be"
arkayne819 wrote:

I hate that pose... and yes, I think this is a reason they do not look so tall.

You can read this thread to understand my method, but there are others (the most used one is the termi method). If you have a concret question I will try to answer it.
And today's update, I have detailed the right leg. I'm pretty happy with the result. I think I will also add an Inquisition symbol.

These are looking great. I've been planning to do the same thing, but I'm still undecided about which approach to take as I like the bulk of the terminator approach, but I also like the motion you've managed to capture with the assault legs.
I'm certainly going to keep a close eye on these

That's an odd or rather selective comment. I've noticed half a dozen of well executed, non terminator looking truescales on this forum within the past few months actually.

Another Question though. If people are using termy bodies to bulk power armor, then how to they go about building up terminators? With Dreadnoughts!?!?

I think the answer to that is "With lots of patience and green stuff"
I think I've only seen a couple of attempts at it. Both looked spectacularly huge. It's True Scale Rhinos and Land Raiders that you really want to be asking about though

More details sculpted. I think the only thing left is adding more purity seals, and decoring the shield (it is out of the picture in order to see the new things). What do you think? What can I add to the shield?
A close up from the detailed leg:
I would appreciate advice and criticism. Thanks.

The details on the shinguards are really awesome - I like the contrast of whatever you used for the left one - imo it should stay kind of shiny, along with the chest ones. as far as the shield goes, maybe an aquila, or since you've already included an inquisition icon, maybe stick with that.
looking good though!

Very nice work...
I just have to admit I've never really seen the logic behind true-scaling Marines. I mean, why stop there?
The hands and heads on almost all GW figures are too large for the body scale. So wouldn't you 'need' to resculpt them as well if you're worried about things being "true scale"?
What about all of GW's vehicles? They're all out of scale.
What about weapons? GW's weapons are all FAR too large for the nominal scale of the figures...
Don't get me wrong... I have nothing but admiration for the quality of work that some of the true-scale enthusiasts (and the OP in particular!) have pulled off, but picking Marines out seems a bit, well, arbitrary to me. But I guess I'm not a true scale believer...

All this talk of true scaling has got me thinking. Has anyone ever made a true scale guardsman? I mean they are still very out of proportion.
Great work on the marine by the way. My favorite part of him has to be that he is twisting, it gives a real sense of movement

You could, if you wanted, make truescale Guard out of non-GW 28mm soldiers - I've seen an army of Napoleonic Guard that worked very well, done partly to get the right scale for hands and heads. Also, Krieg and Elysians are pretty close to accurate/non-heroic. I kinda like Heroic though - its like Icons and tapestries, the hands and head are huge compared to the chests, as they're the important bit...
The Neck studs are excellent, a great idea I may steal for my ][ marine... but the ][ on the knee pad... I'm not sure about it, it sort of sticks out.

The few time i have had, has been for painting this witch king on fell beast for my girlfriend's birthday. She is really happy
The With King himself. The cloak has been painted using back mixed with blues:
As the model was bought on ebay, there was a claw missing, so I had to model it with green stuff, giving it a more dynamic pose than the original one.
Another shot:
And finally the base:
On the other hand, I can advance that I'm working on another member for the Death Watch squad: a termi, maybe in heresy armour. Moreover, I'm reading Horus Heresy novels and this has inspired me to model a true scale in a completely standing pose Garviel Loken. As soon as I have some time, I will upload some WIP photos.

If you say so. That may before Horus was found and became their primarch but even in the first book of the Horus heresy they have that light greenish armour. It is even on he cover. Also with GW animosity at keeping their to their own fluff I would not be surprised to see that they are truly different.

When they become the Sons of Horus, their armours got repainted in other colour scheme, that seems to be what you are describing
In "Horus Rising" cover, the marines appear to be Sons of Horus (see the Horus eye in a shoulder pad)
In "False gods" you can see the Luna Wolves symbol in the left corner SM's left shoulder pad

Don't worry, you're opinions are welcome . I understand that being in a ship for more than a week affects the brain.
I started a new member for the Deathwatch squad, a librarian (very WIP yet)
And Loken with arms and shoulder pads (still anything glued). The High Elves head is only provisional, although I like how it suits the armour. Maybe I could take away the hair, and make it more rude to fit SMs features.
Advices and opinions are welcome.

The Librarian is looking good - but Loken... I think it's the extreme straightness of the stance, but it's not really coming out well. The leg-hip-chest line of the model is very straight, while the pictures are more contrapposto, with a twist allowing for them to loom. The hips are turned slightly, the shoulders are down, the chest is up, putting him in a tense, active but static stance. So far this one is mostly just relaxed and low...

I like him! I kinda agree what people have said about the pose, but even though he looks a little static I like him and am sure once you've added other components he will look alot better. Looking forward to more.

The pose is good, better than the typical "I need to take a poop so badly" pose most GW models seem to have!

I always think GW's SM's look as if they have already filled their power nappies!

Some great work on here, looking forward to seeing what you do next. By the way that OSL from the power sword is awesome, far better than any of my attempts. Subscribed for more.

I like the Elf head, it just needs its ear removed.
