Apparently, Westboro Baptist Church is going to picket ComiCon. The only thing funnier is if, in true "Revenge of the Nerds" style, the nerds fought back by joining in the picket!
These guys protested my High School several months back for being named after an allegedly gay poet and claiming that it was corrupting the children (arguable either direction in my case ).
I would like to go on the record that, while I cannot stand these people, I find the amount of threats and/or suggestions of violence and/or crime that people make towards them equally alarming.
They are exercising what has been established as their legal right. Hate them for it, if you must. Deride them for it, if it amuses you. Please, however, do not intimate that it would be appropriate to harm them or their property for their views.
While they have a right to assemble and picket US, we have a right to dress up in our best 501st, steampunk, cosplay, shining knight, Klingon, Anime & WH40K costumes, mingle with them, and try to hand them OUR literature (D&D character sheets, players handbooks, army rosters, ComiCon programs & anything else you can think of). heck, wouldn't it be ironic to hand them print outs of Jack Chick comics?
Be nice to them RIGHT TO THEIR FACES. Heck, invite them in. Offer to buy them a "Galactic Burger" or something.
Your rights to assemble and speak freely do not mean that you cannot say things they will find annoying or inciteful (is taht a word, even? LOL).
If you want to get back at these people, do to them what theyre doing to us. Annoy them. Just be better at it. You know what thei buttons would be. Push them.

P.S. If you just happen to have not bathed in a week & forgot to put on deodorant that morning... So be it. LOL
Plus, Comic Con is in "commiefornia" land of the freak and home of the liberal. The church probably filed for a permit months ago... of course a counter protest could be interesting... lots of Military and bikers in San Diego... and lots of them go to Commic Con.

Actually no. Do you know why they do it? Because of the fact that they get publicity for their law firm while doing it. These are people who do absolutely everything they can to provoke a fight/physical altercation and wrap themselves up in "Free Speech" to avoid being taken to anything outside of civil court.
Physical violence towards them is completely acceptable considering the fact that they picket military funerals to start fights and then clean out the bank accounts of any serviceman who even so much as looks at them funny.
Well, I guess I can't vouch for you guys, but every night I know I say a quick prayer to Constantine, Batman, and Captain America for always watching over me and protecting me from demons from hell, gun toting maniacs in white facepaint, and communism.
if comic-con is anything like gencon and other conventions i've been too, those attending should round up the fattest and smelliest of the bunch (the once-a-week-hygieners) to infiltrate the protesters. tell them it's a larp or something and that there is swag. that should teach the protesters a lesson!

I agree.
@ Kanluwen: Do you have any evidence to back these claims up? Because if a fight IS started both sides could well be prosecute (and I doubt that would look good on them). Besides, at least they are protesting legally.
@ helgrenze: That is actually quite offensive to me as I live in California (odd how people can't spell anymore) and I don't deny them their right to do it so I'm glad they got a permit to do it in a legal way.
They never get prosecuted, simply because they refuse to press charges and just take people to civil court.
Look up the history of the Westboro Baptist Church. It's owned and operated by a couple who are practicing lawyers. They have their children always present at the protests, and anytime they get their permits revoked--they sue for "quashing free speech".
Well these people are a compleate waste of space and I shall hand them all to Lord Khorne as a sacrifice just to clear the matter....(Lets see em sue that).....
Again--they're not protesting. They do it as a publicity stunt and to make money.
They need to be denied any permits they file--but of course that's not going to happen, because they immediately sue for violating their "civil rights".

unarmed law abiding citizens.
The Baptists or the soldiers? Because, ironically, the latter have started more fights.
Not saying that they weren't provoked, mind you. Just that the law is rather more on the side of the WBC than the servicemen and their families.
TBH, the best way (or rather, the best legal way) to deal with 'em is counter protests. One of the local radio stations in my neck of the woods organizes one, think it's called "God Hates Douchebags." Just as long as you avoid anything that could possibly be construed as assault, as they're rather trigger happy with those attorneys of theirs.
As soon as they actually violate a law, you'll see a lot of people come down on them.
Regardless of their REASON for protesting, it (sadly) *IS* a legal protest. While I won't say that they aren't doing anything wrong, I WILL say they aren't doing anything illegal.
...and I'm saying that ComiCon attendees should "not do anything illegal" right back at them.
Wasn't there a protest where counter-protesters just surrounded them and drowned them out?
Thinking of a protest ouside some broadway-type shows. People dresses as angels came out and sang showtunes during the breaks. Their angel wings and singing completely blocked the WBC protesters from view and hearing.
Shouldn't be too hard with the massive amount of people at comic con.
Funny how such things only ever happen in America, where the Right of Free Speech is held in such a high esteem that it can be used as an excuse to what could be considered organized crime, but where you aren't allowed to say f*** or sh** on television. I think if it weren't for the US, life on planet Earth would be a lot more boring. Now go and bombard them with super-smelly-XXL-geek summertime odor
Uh, you should be REALLY glad you also live in a country where free speech is held in such a "high esteem" as it is. In fact, holding free speech at the highest esteem is the cornerstone of democracy. Even if it might offend (although not threaten) people.
It's not like things like this don't happen in Germany, Sweden, UK or anywhere else in Europe. It's just that the Westboro really managed to push the right buttons and/or have a pretty good PR-talent.

Apologies.... No true offense meant. I lived in SD for a while (Navy) and I know some people that go to the Con every year. That said, its rather unfortunate that its forecast to be kinda mild... even cool by SoCal standards, that weekend... Mid 70s and such.

That would have been Rolling Thunder. EDIT: They've been showing up recently whenever WBC appears at a soldier's funeral.
These guys make all Christians look bad. I especially feel bad for the kids that group raises. Have you ever seen them on the news? I know kids say the darndest things, and while I'm all for free speech, seeing a eight year old spew out a line of curse words and other foul language is a little disturbing (and a wee bit sad ).
And for the record, God only loves Mormons. South Park said so. It has to be true.

I have to agree with you, because only the bad (sorta fake) Christians every get the spot light which shows bad upon my faith. I can promise every single one of you that 99% of Christian Ministors and Preachers arent even close to this. I even think its safe to say that a Preacher that says that God hates ANYBODY shuoldnt be in that position in a church. They are horrible influences on the community and horrible people in general.

More or less. The God <insert verb> <insert noun> groups are rare but they're pretty much all you ever see on TV. The rest of Christians are too normal to make interesting news coverage XD.
God hates me? Then I must invite the Mormons in for coffee next time they come by. Man, I love these people.
Wouldn't it be funny if those who go to ComiCon dressed as 40k people surrounded the picket, then picket that "Khorne Hates Everyone". That would piss them off.
Wonder what could be done to protest their home church while they are away? Hmmm. Not talking about burnin and pillaging or stupid gak, just a bit of their own medicine....nah. I'm not low enough to dose them like that. I'm sure God has a special "thank you" in store for them.

HA! that would be funny, with signs saying "The Emperor Hates Your Church" all dressed up as Imperial Confessors.
P.S. I dig your profile picture with Ronald Mcdonald zombie/ canibal.
Wow. What a bunch of assclowns. Here's the description for thier protest:
San Diego Convention Center 111 W Harbor Dr. WBC to picket Comic Con 2010 at the San Diego Convention Center. Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent - so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry.
He takes things way out of proportion. Theres is a line between Intrest - Obsession - Unhealthy Obsession - and Idolitry. Comi-con is a place for people with similar intrests to gather and enjoy themselves. Last time i checked, there werent any devotional services to Batman.
I don't go to churches of any sort because of morons like that. Maybe if they realized that they are responsible for their own actions and are chasing people away from the churches they seem to want to fill, they wouldn't do such stupid things.
God may hate us, but Papa Nurgle loves us! And them! Papa Nurgle loves everybody!
On a more serious note, as a servicemember myself who has buried too many friends, and seen this group and groups like them, I truly believe they are the absolute worst type of people.
That being said, the greatest victory we can win is not a petty "matching" of their protest, but rather giving them absolutely no attention whatsoever and giving them nothing they can take to court. I only hope the non-dakkaites who show up realize the game they're playing.
They did one of their funeral "protests" in Jacksonville, NC a couple years ago. A bunch of (then) current and former service folk went and just stood between them and the procession, with our backs to the "protesters". As the hearse drove by we simply saluted, then turned and just stared at the "protesters". They wanted the police to disperse us, but they were told they were blocking the sidewalk. And since we didnt say or do anything directly to them they had nothing to file in court.
megatrons2nd wrote:I don't go to churches of any sort because of morons like that. .
That makes me sad. Surely you can see that they're not the majority of church going people? They're the equivalent of the fat smelly guy in the FLGS.
Unfortunately they are the extremely vocal minority that are omnipresent in virtually every congregation. No matter where you go, there is always that one guy/gal...
Anyway, there is a veteran organization known as the "Patriot Guard Riders." If the WBC starts making regular appearances at gaming cons, maybe the nerding community should do something similar, of course in a slightly more antagonistic and hilarious manner.
Since WBC is so keen on writing how "God hates f**s" on their signs. Why not bring your own signs that says "F**s hold signs" or something similar. Or just do what they did in Portland and bring any and all sign you can. Preferably in the same style as their own so that their message is drowned out by the white noise of random signs.

I completely agree with this sentiment, no use in actually doing what they want. Just wondering though, has anyone actually checked the verse on that sign, all it says is this
"Just as it is written: "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."
I noticed that, (Incidentally in mine it says 'I chose Jacob, but rejected Esau', which is pretty much the same) and I can't think of anything about that which relates to the things they are protesting against.

This +1. Just make it less conspicuous so that only the comconners notice it.
Also, Magickal Memories is correct, you can't just use violence on them - it's what they want and they will sue your arse if you do. As scripture says: Love your Enemies (It confuses them).

Pity I won't be there really. I hope everyone who goes enjoys it.
Actually that's awesome, get Magdalena cosplayers together with SoB/Inquisitor cosplayers, and have them head over and join in the holy crusade with Burn the Heretic banners. Just love to see the Westboro's faces trying to figure wtf is going on.
I must admit, I was...unaware of just what this group gets up to. I must say, they're an impressive level of evil. Phelps is well on his way to Daemonhood when someone finally gets fed up with him enough to stake him through the chest. I doubt anything else will actually kill him.
I must say, joking aside, I can't understand how this hateful spiel can be jusitifed as free speach. I'm not American, but I was rather under the impression that free speach was the right to say what you believe...not to force what you want to say on everyone else. I'm rather proud they were banned from even entering the UK. Although I sorta wish they could...five second in the lot would be arrested under the various laws for inciting racial hatred.
I'm looking foward to seeing just how this all ends up. On the plus side, if they're going after conventions they must be getting fairly desperate to shock themselves up some more cash.
If you can find Louis Theroux's documentary on them I highly recommend anyone going to the con watch it.
They aren't actually interested in getting you into a church, really. They are effectively a cult in that their membership is quite restricted and they thrive on the criticism they get from outside. To WBC members, the worst and most vehement criticism they get just confirms to them that they are right. They constantly tell themselves that they are just and everyone else is evil, which they then use to drive their members further away from the moderating effects of contact with society. Which causes them to say crazier and crazier stuff, which makes outsiders scorn them, which makes them believe they are being persecuted, so they get deeper involved in their cult. It's a perpetual seige mentality that is exploited by the lawyers in charge of the church as a means of getting money.
Honestly, the best way of dealing with them is probably just being nice to them. From what I saw in the documentary it looked like they don't know how to deal with that. Or otherwise, ignore them.
That said, if you guys wanted to round up 30-or-so of the con's fattest and hairiest guys, dress them in slave Leia costumes, and have them form a living wall to block off the protest- a living wall that sings the Superman theme song a capella - and then put that on youtube... that would be pretty cool.

Priceless.
Someone has to do a version of that based on the 40k 'where is your god now?' image with a crazy Baptist person holding a sign up saying 'God Hates Nerds' and throwing some holy water on a cosplayer.
Can I just point out though that not all Christians are this wacko, most of us are decent people. You mostly just have to watch out for sects/cults like the Mormons, Latter day saints, Some branches of the Baptist Church and others. As far as I can tell most of these sects grew up in the new world 'religious freedom' immigration to America, and these people are mostly the ones who take the Bible word for word literally, which most do not think was intended. With some issues, their 'black-and-white' stance can be admirable, specifically in situations where it needs to be pointed out that this is wrong, and this is right. However, with many cases, such as this one, it is mainly an impractical and frankly ludicrous pain in the backside that does more to distance people from the church than it does draw them in.
Of course in this situation they are clearly not even making an effort to draw people in, its just that the founders discovered that religion can have a very strong hold on people.
Couldn't be bothered reading the entire thread, but since Twilight was introduced hasn't it dominated ComiCon with its annoying fans. Perhaps these protesters are doing the right thing this time.

Amen to that. That's one series of books that should be burned as Heresy.
I wish they would protest like this in Amsterdam, the living statues could really spice that picket up :3
As for Westboro people, shot on sight, catapulted into a volcano, thrown into an abyss, shot out of a cannon into a wall, use as croc bait. These are things that come up in my mind.
I wish they would picket a Norwegian underground black metal band.

Oh. My. Gosh. This is their plan to distract us from Twilight taking over Comi-con. The WBC is just a distraction. CONSPIRICY
I think Rev (Loosely Used) Phelps and if brainwashed ilk are running out of steam and are just going places where large groups of people are. I think they know eventhough our war and policies are not popular that by going after the soldiers and their families has soured their message to 99% of the nation. So now they are after a huge conventions of nerds and hackers. I do not see this ending well.
anyone a member of the 501st here on dakka? i'm sure they'll have a big contingent of stormtroopers there at an event as big as SDCC. why not "counter protest" them by having stormtroopers question them about missing droids and renegade force users? nothing violent and i think it would make some good sound bytes for the evening news.
hahahahaha just read it. hard to believe someone can be so dumb to think it is a sin to have a hobby. No offense but I think such people who think this are fanatics or fundamentalists. They are just a bunch of hard core bible nutters who want to be in the news imo. No offence.

I think he's traveling through time after he was shot by a Space God.
What cracks me up is how these people say that the world but be such a better place if we spend more time reading the Bible. Now that is funny.

I know the current push is to say, "but it was actually Favor-aid". When doing such this generation is ignoring that first the reports stated both were used and second that back then it was commonplace to refer to a paerticular type of product by the leading brand name(Most commonly known producer of a given product)
I think a "Drink the Kool-Aid" campaign could be really funny if handled right. Maybe all of the Comic-con attendees walk up and offer the protestors kool-aid or have people dress-up as protestors and have them constantly trying to get the other protestors to drink the purple kool-aid.(It has to be purple). One call to the news about a religious group handing out grape kool-aid as a part of the protest will ensure the epicness of the joke.

I do more than intimate it. I desire it to happen. They protested at military funerals, just so they could sue and get money.
I think Shakepseare said it best:
EXETER
Scorn and defiance; slight regard, contempt,
And any thing that may not misbecome
The mighty sender, doth he prize you at.
Thus says my king; an' if your father's highness
Do not, in grant of all demands at large,
Sweeten the bitter mock you sent his majesty,
He'll call you to so hot an answer of it,
That caves and womby vaultages of France
Shall chide your trespass and return your mock
In second accent of his ordnance.

Look up the history of the Westboro Baptist Church. It's owned and operated by a couple who are practicing lawyers. They have their children always present at the protests, and anytime they get their permits revoked--they sue for "quashing free speech".
A group of the smelliest, neck beardiest, D&D nerds (no hate on them, i love D&D) needs to set up a grid right in the middle of their picket line, and start playing D&D. Use as many naked demonette models that cause adultery and encourage multiple sexual partners as possible!
Man what happened to phillips. He used to be a prominent civil right lawyer. I remember reading people who knew him then could not have imaagined this.
But i got one for them. The bible is of mans hands. It is made in a mans factory. they worship the bible. they are worshipping false idols.

Not really, though thats besides the point. I see where you are going with it, but it's not exactly the same thing.
And besides, this would be one of those "It's OK because it's US" type of thing.
To be honest i wish the founder put some restrictions on speech. Not severe but somthing like "free speech will not be stiffled unless it contains extreme hate or contains threats that are dagerous to the public and the organization who serves them. "
Im glad that we kinda did something for the respect for fallen heros act. To bad people are afraid to enforce it.

Who gets to decide what are "threats that are dangerous to the public and the organization who serves them?"
Correct me if I'm wrong but the reason alone that these people are so trigger happy with legal actions is an American thing, isn't it? I never hear about stuff like that in Europe.

You're blindingly wrong. Its not a US thing. Its a way to make lots of monmey to keep their cult going. Its pretty much all they do.
Comics writers have revealed plans to turn the tables on the Westboro Baptist Church with Project God Loves Batman, reports Robot 6.
Fred Phelps infamous congregation, best known for picketing the funerals of dead American soldiers, have reportedly made plans to protest at Comic-Con over the 'idolatrous' worship of comic book characters.
Writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and her husband Matt Fraction have pledged to donate money to Aids charity amfAR if the church appears at Comic-Con, with the donation rising depending on how long they stay.
DeConnick encouraged others to get involved via the Twitter hashtag #godlovesbatman
They're going to be picketing the Gaga concert I'm going to. Good luck drawing any attention to your protest when a flash mob in full Lady Gaga costume surrounds you and starts dancing
Actually I hope they picket Blizzcon as well, would love to see the reactions of warcraft players in full costume. Or dealing with the 'For the Horde!' chants they'd probably be bombarded with.

Or Considering that starcraft 2 is close at hand. Star craft costumes. We need people in zerg costumes to rush them.
Everyone that goes needs to be on the same page about not getting provoked into doing something stupid.
This is a chance for the hobby and for geeky nerds every where to attain a certan level of cool by joining the likes of OZZY and other Rock legends in that they have been picketted by a church.
Thats right guys, ya'll are about to become rock stars.

Only if you want to be a scantily clad lesbian making out at a mets or yankees game.
I hang my head in shame that I can not pass on the love of the holy pie to the unbelievers and shame on you focusedfire for not noticing the pie comment

I saw the comment, but was following the guidelines of our church's original mission of claiming and cleansing non-sensical threads or threads that had gone horribly off topic. As such I did not feel the thread had become Pie-worthy and passed on making comment for not wanting to pie prematurely.
If my brothers in the church feel that I have transgressed against the Holy Pie that us named turtle then I will pledge to claim the next Litgo thread in our church's name as an act of contrition.
All praise the Eternal Turtle Pie. May the Unending Turtle+3.14 be with you.
Someone needs to start threads on the various different forums or even a website for the organisation of this. It's all well and good talking about it now, but when it comes to the actuall convention you'll all just stand around doing normal things and occasionally casting an ominous glance in their direction, but basically just ignoring them.
You may recall that the noted fuckheads of the Westboro Church had announced they were going to be protesting the San Diego Comic Con today, since every attendee worships Batman as the divine creator of the universe or something. Well, I'm not going to dignify them with a picture of their "protest," but it included all of three people, holding five offensive signs. But right next to them?
...More than 100 nerds, mocking the donkey-caves beautifully. As I type, they're still out there, holding signs like "Superman Died For Your Signs" and "God Loves Gay Robin." They are awesome and I love them. And I'm pretty if God is out there, he loves 'em too.
Whats even better is Fred Phelps and his church probably think they won cause those "nerds" were busy countering their little picket instead of enjoying comic-con...
Little does he know that those people probly enjoyed fething with them more then 100 comic-cons..
Awesome stuff. Wonder when they're going to sue the nerds for something or other to line their pockets though :(
Or.. Maybe they'll actually go crazy and try to sue the characters

I don't think they CAN sue the nerds. They were excersizing their freedom of speech, just like the church.

At least, that's how it SHOULD work.
That is the point of freedom of speech.
Side A is free to spout hatred and derision.
Side B is free to shout them down.
It was the nerdy version of the bikers who defend US forces funerals from the Phelps protestors.
