They strike from the shadows, they embrace the darkness. Fear them for they are your doom. Where you are weak they will strike. When you are tired they are waiting, poised to strike. Where you had courage it will melt. Then you shall know fear for the sons of corax are watching....and waiting....and bringing your doom.

This is my new Painting and Modelling Blog for my newest project, a Raven Guard Company! I've had the Marine Codex since its release but have never been drawn to Raven Guard until now! I blame my newest army on the sources of inspiration below...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zB6IqLGpj6g - cool video and music of Raven Stuff

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Raven_Guard - really cool fluff and characterful army builds

http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2009/12/painting-raven-guard-muted-pale-skin.html - nice tutorials on how to paint Raven Guard skin!

Have you perhaps considered using the Blood Angels codex for your Raven Guard? That way you can field Assault Marines as troops and give them a bigger variety of weapons.

Lovely so far! Can't wait for more

@ eNvY - Thanks for the input. I have been thinking about using the Blood Angels Codex, descent of Angels would be great to use, not to mention rules and points cost for Vanguard that finally reflect what those Veterans are meant to be capable of! But I still love the Codex Space Marines, plus the bonus of using Shrike or a bike mounted army would be nice!

@ Limbo - Thanks for subscribing, I hope you enjoy the pics of my own models once I get them posted!

But in the meantime, happy news, all my fears about having to paint the Raven Guard Chapter Symbol have vanished! For the fine price of 8 squid I can get an a4 sheet of transfers with 100 transfers from Forge World! Its a beast of a sheet and I'm very happy that its being finally released!

Unfortunately I didn't paint those models above, but give me a few more years and you'd never know!! I'll need lots of practice before I get that good.

After a long wait I finally have some photos of my models. Find below my scouts with zombie faces, and my first tactical marines.

The tactical marines all have different eyes. Red eyes big, green eyes big, red eyes dots, green eyes dots. Which do you prefer?

I think I'll give some more ogryn flesh wash to add colour to the zombie skin scouts. I just went over the top with the final touch up of grey....

I like the dotted red eyes. Unique, and they look very appropriately menacing.

Thanks Young_Logan, great to get encouragement! I hope it does look epic...after a few years work!!!

And thank you hungryp. I'm so glad you said that, cos I've just repainted the other 3 sets of eyes into red dots! I would have been gutted if you had said the green dots looked cooler. Although they're my models and I'm the only one who'll be looking at them, I do value other peoples input, thats why I'm writing this blog! I want them to look epic.

So on to my next area for input, black bolters or red bolters?

I vote black. The red stands out a little too much against the black of the Marine.

Raven Guard Blog @ 2010/07/30 14:30:15

Post by: ChocolateGork

I would suggest black bolters with red insignias and clips.

Also what rules are you using for your army?

I would suggest blood angels as raven guard are famed for their jump packs, right?

Shrike's special rules work OK too, but the regular plain old Marine Codex does a fine job as well.

Seriously, what's with the BA Bandwagon lately? Everyone wants to play everything as BA.

Personally, I've played them for years, but the idea of Shrike giving everyone Fleet has made me kinda want to start a Raven Guard army when I get around to making a list from the Vanilla codex.

As they walked through the shadows the only sound that could be heard was the revving of the orks trukks. They sounded like a heap of scrap being dragged along a metal floor but somehow the Ork machines worked, and they worked well. The greenskins had taken huge chunks of territory from the defenders of this imperial world, but they weren't expecting what was about to happen to them...
After days of tracking and planning the ambush the Ravens lay in wait. Their patience had paid off. The ork trukks came along the ravine with a noise like a gravel waterfall. Three...Two....One....scout mendoza pressed the detonator switch and the ravine walls came crashing down on the ork convoy. The screams of the greenskins were quickly silenced by scout blakes sniper rifle. mendoza picked up his heavy bolter and joined in the fray, scything down the enemy where they presented themselves.
Within a minute it was over. All that was left of the orks was blood and dust and the Raven Guard scouts returned to the shadows and prepared their next strilke...

Hello Asherian, Hungryp, ChoclateGork and Alpharius, welcome to my Raven Guard Blog. I have considered the BA codex options as I have discussed with eNvY in the earlier posts, but I'm quite happy running this army from the Space Marines Codex, and maybe even using them as a bike army. The best advantage the BA codex would give me would be the 'descent of angels' special rule and the option of taking Vanguard Veterans as they are meant to be. But I'm happy as is..

So I'm getting better at the photographs. You can't beat natural light for photographing tiny fighting men. Here are my scouts as is. I blacked out their eyes, I'd be happy to call them finished, just need to base them...

And for the tacticals I've done a tiny bit of highlighting and made all their eyes the red dots. I think I will paint the bolters black too, it would give them a darker, more dangerous feel. Don't want too much colour on these boys!!
Also see my pityful attempt at a raven guard badge, I'm so glad the transfers are coming out!! But see the final picutre for a neat trick I found! The author of that blog says he uses a drop of olive oil to prevent the GS sticking to itself...great trick! If only I could sculpt like that!!

Why not do your own mini codex and that way you can have control of what goes in there. and dont forget to ask for proof reading from people.

I asked 3 people that I know.

1 is a fellow blogger, 1 is a pro writer who wrote for Mongoose Publishing and the last is from a shop.

The greenstuff shoulderpad mold is a great idea if it works. I've made a mold of a pad design, but haven't tried to get it transferred onto a blank pad yet. Of course, if you're no good with greenstuff, still not very helpful, but at least you only have to get it right once!

Hi Niall, thanks for that link. She paints a sweet Shrike!

And hello Miss Dee, welcome to the Ravens Blog. Its mostly shadows and dust, but occassionally there are updates with pictures!!!

I've been away camping for a week, but I'm back now, and looking forward to my next models. I wanna get those tacticals and scouts finished and based and move onto something nice....

I have a metal dread that I need to strip the paint off, any suggestions? I'm in the UK so I can't use the 'simply green' stuff all you americans talk about, any good alternatives that I can get easily?

Raven Guard Blog @ 2010/08/08 17:30:56

Post by: Morgrim

For metal, any acetone containing product will do it. Nail polish remover is one of the easiest to use. It'll also take off (or at least soften enough to pull off) the superglue. Just don't use it on plastic or the plastic ends up resembling rubber.

Raven Guard Blog @ 2010/08/08 21:18:25

paint stripper from any car mart will do fine, just dont want you getting blamed for missing nail varnish remover.

And check out my Iron Warriors blog via my iron hands blog.

Superb, thank you Morgrim and Miss Dee for your responses. But what works for taking GW paint off plastic models? I've heard of folks in the UK ordering the magical 'simply green' product from websites and getting it shipped over. But hopefully theres an alternative that I can get easily from the shops here....

Dettol works wonders, make sure you get the original brown coloured stuff, leave it to soak for 24 hours and then use an old paintbrush to remove the paint from the recesses.

Fairy Power Spray works excellently on metals and plastics, strips acrylics and enamels no problem. Spray on, leave for 10-20 mins then scrub with a toothbrush - preferably an old one
Nice work so far by the way.

This is the beginning of my 'project redemption'. I bought a huge chunk of my Raven Guard army off a guy on e-bay, and this dread was in it. This was the only model that wasn't painted in Raven Guard colours, and was definately the worst model for paintjob, so I'm interested to see how the paintstripping goes, and hope to make something worthwhile out of this model! Unfortunately the arms are very solidly glued into place and the seller didn't have the spare weapons either, so I'm stuck with a TL Lascannon Missile Launcher dread, but things could be worse!

In other news, I just realised that the ETC has been and gone. The standings are very impressive http://www.rankingshq.com/etc/article.aspx?ArticleTypeId=2&ArticleId=180 nice to see a top class competition, hope all who were involved enjoyed it!!

Hello, here's a quick 24 hour update....

After a day cycle in the chryo-pool brother Adrionus began to feel itchy. Thankfully Tech Marine Brother OldTootchBrushuslotus came to his aid to attempt to scrub the battle debris and old paint off his aging hull. Unfortunately 24 hours was just not enough. After adding more serum to the chryo-pool Tech Marine Brother OldTootchBrushuslotus left the dreadnought to float until tomorrow, when hopefully finally the dire paint would be removed!

Yes, I left my plastic Dreadnought (that one was for you Miss Dee) floating overnight, and it did nothing. Although some colour began to come off on the brush it wasn't as much as I'd hoped for. And seeing as there was no visible damage to the plastic model I've added more disinfectant and left it for another overnight. Perhaps the stuff I'm using is just cheap and inneffective, or maybe I gave up on the old toothbrush too soon, but I'll give it a good shot tomorrow and let you know how I get on!

If that doesn't work use simple green, it will strip it in a day.

Raven Guard Blog @ 2010/08/11 11:33:16

Post by: Vitruvian XVII

Failing that, use acetone free (v. important it has no acetone otherwise your dread will melt ) nail varnish remover, soak it for about 5 minutes then scrub, works pretty well! Don't leave it for too long though as the plastic can sometimes lose a bit of sharpness of detail.

Speaking of a Raven Guard Fandex, I am currently in the process of writing one. I have completed a small list of special characters, including Shrike and the new Forgeworld guy. I've taken all characters from existing fluff, except for two; the "death-captain" (the guy in charge of the mutated side of the Raven Guard, a result of Corax' attempt to speed up maturation of the Marines post-geneseed implantation) the mounted "Riding-Captain", as well as two characters I built upon from extremely vague fluff: the 1st Company commander "The Hawk" had been referred to as "as ferocious and devious as a hawk in flight" somewhere, i think in the mag; also the Chapter Master. Since nothing is known about him except that he is probably nearly as old as the chapter (providing a visualization of a mostly-mechanical man), I decided to call him "The Raven" as yet another allusion to E.A.P. (see sergeant Alenpoe, and of course "Quoth the Primarch, 'Nevermore...'") Any rule/wargear suggestions for him would be welcome.

Here's a small taste of my special character ideas; its my favorite of all of them so far!

note: In case posting statlines are against the rules, please take notice that these are mine own creation.

Aajz Solari - CAPTAIN OF THE RAVEN GUARD 2nd COMPANY

Spoiler:

WS--BS--S--T--W--I---A---Ld---Sv
--6----0---4--4---3--5---4--10----3+

SPECIAL RULES
And They Shall Know No Fear, Independent Character.

Gamble With Fate: Because of Aajz’s tendency to play
with fate and his peerless successes and disastrous
failures, he must reroll all rolls, failed or successful.

WARGEAR
The Talons of Chance: These are a pair on master
-crafted lightning claws. They allow Aajz to
override the Gamble With Fate special rule if he
rolls a 6 to hit or wound.

Hello folks, thanks for your kind comments;

- Ghost in the Darkness - as stated earlier, I live in the UK (see the flag?) and so I can't buy simple green over here, but I'm strongly considering ordering some online and paying for the shipping of it over here!!

- Vitruvian XVII - Thanks for that tip, that might be my next attempt, but I'm not too hot on the idea of it damaging the plastic!!

- bladebaka - Thanks for your input too. I'm not sure I need to write a new codex for the Raven Guard though! The current one does fine. The Forgeworld guy's name is Shadow Captain Korvydae, he's pretty lethal looking. I had thought that the Raven Guard mutations were all killed. Also, the 1st Company already has a named captain - Captain Ravenclaw. His personal heraldry can be found on page 25 of the Space Marine Codex, its a bit thin on the ground but its there! But I like your ideas for "The Hawk", sounds great for a game against your friends.

- Miss Dee - Good to see your input too!! Everyone needs a Ballistic Skill!

As for updates, I've very sorry to say that my dettol experiment did not work. I left the dread in a dettol bath for 2 days, and even after a good scrub with a toothbrush under a running tap the most paint that came off was a faint smude on my hand! The dread is still well and truly painted, and it smells a little bit funny now too!
So I don't know if I'm going to get some other product to try to clean him off, or just try to paint over him. I've left him on the window sill to dry, there's no point in stressing about him.

But I did get some reinforcements....

Yooooo!!

Thank you Miss Dee. I just spent the last 10 minutes on google looking for someone selling it in the uk, and the closest I could find was qvcuk.com who sell a set of it for £20!!!

Here's my progress so far, I have to admit, this Land Speeder Storm is one of the sweetest kits I've worked on for some time. There are a lot of really nice details so I'm going to paint it in parts before I glue it all together. The photo below really doesn't show much apart from how handy elastic bands are to get a snug fit, but its got cool shotguns and bolt pistols stowed away.
I'm a bit nervous that GW will drop it from their Space Marine codex in 6th edition, they tend to do that for models that are cool, but hopefully they wont. And it fits in so well with the Raven Guard fluff. Scouts being dropped behind enemy lines on covert-ops. Plus my favourite bit is that you get a driver and 5 free scouts! I just hope I can make them pose-able on bases!!

Hi revackey - its available from Forge World only, but £8 for 100 transfers of all types isn't a bad price to pay! You could always go halfs with another Raven Guard player, I don't think I'll need 100 transfers all to myself!

I've been busy 'constructing' as I call it, its not model making, its constructing a vehicle!!

Here's a quick update of my Land Speeder Storm. The main body of the speeder is just about done now, I'm going to spray it and paint it before sticking the final bits on. Its a great kit, I've really enjoyed making it. All praise to elastic bands and clothes pegs too, couldn't have done it without them!

The rear section isn't glued to the main body of the speeder yet, I'm going to need to reach the details with my paintbrush before I glue it together. So the benches and the 'roll cage' aren't glued on yet.

I didn't wash the kit. Do you mean with soapy water to clean the release agent? I didn't do that. I'm a bit lazy...

I also didn't glue the pilots legs in. I did glue him together and spray him, but hopefully he can still squeeze into place. If not I'll just prize his arm off and get him into place that way.

raven guard was the first army i did, and so far it's reached well over 7,000 points, backed up by my 2000points of super-heavies, meant to represent the guardsmen stationed on deliverence.
i am currently campaigning for GW moulded shoulder pads, as raven guard are the only founding chapter not to have shoulder pads. the FW raven guard accessories are just too expensive!
i prefer the dotted red eyes- and by the way- don't taint the raven guard by making them blood angels! have shrike, and a good investment is korvadre, as he counts assault squads as scoring units!

I prefered the original...It just seemed cooler when the special effects were more retro...

I just noticed your question revackey that I fully forgot to answer!! I am hoping to field this army, I reckon I'll build it up to a healthy 2000 points. But I want to enjoy the building process, and get them painted up really well before I start to play! I do a lot more painting and collecting than I do gaming, but when I game I like to have a beautiful army!

So here's the land speeder storm base-coated. You were right miss dee, the pilot doesn't fully fit in after being glued together, but maybe a bit more persuasion and I can get him into place. I just want to paint up the interior nice first!!

Also, the final picture is a clue... Niall, you're not allowed guess cos I think you already know...

Nice work so far, i have some pics of my own raven guard models up in the gallery, the Guard just look so cool when they're assembled for war, the rules are cool and they're just a bit different from the other chapters, can't wait to see more of your progress, keep it up.

Here's an update...

My Raven Guard have taken to the battle field! I've played two 1750 games in the last three days, both were great fun. My list is;

Shrike
10 man assault squad, power fist
10 man assault squad, power fist
10 man tactical squad, melta gun, combi melta, melta bombs, drop pod
10 man tactical squad, melta gun, combi melta, melta bombs, drop pod
10 man tactical squad, melta gun, combi melta, melta bombs, drop pod
5 man scout squad
Dreadnought with TL lascannon, missile launcher
Vindicator
Vindicator

First game was great fun, until turn one when a certain blood angels player moved his vindicator 12" and fired his fast moving demolisher cannon and killed shrike and 6 of his assault squad! not even iron halo could have stopped a death like that. rest of the game was revenge...thats why my opponent rolled so many 1's with his melta gun shooting and his difficult terrain tests. Whats that? another baal predator is immobilised? looks like I'll have to hit it automatically with three powerfist attacks next turn... MWAHAHAHHAA

Second game was also good fun. I got to go first so shrike alpha striked and the drop pods did a tad better. I like the set up of having two melta gun shots on the turn they arrive, but still having the srg hit in initiative order, but still being able to pop a tank with the melta bomb. Shrike did a lot better in the second game. He lived throughout the whole battle, and even killed some warlocks!!

Lots of updates to show, but first here's an overall progress picture...

You always need more tactical marines...

I just can't get enough of them! I'm smiling from ear to ear with a sense of satisfaction. Gone is the procrastinating me, here is the new paint-five-marines-in-one-day-and-brag-about-it me!!

Here's a crumby photo of the marines, they're all painted!! The rest of the black reach squad got conscripted into an imperial fist squad and a long fangs squad, they might be reclaimed in the future!

Here they are in the stunning mid-day light. And a little preview of who I hope to be painting next!

Ah Awesome, Another Raven guard player!! We are becoming more and more common (I know 4 now!!!)
Your models are looking very nice! I was going to go with the different colours for the shoulder pads but I thought that the red rim looked the most 'bad-ass'

I'm going to try out that pale skin tut you put up!

you going for the transfer sheet or the pads from bits & kits?

Raven Guard Blog @ 2010/09/20 12:33:47

Post by: CaptainRavenclaw

Thats a very cool Chaplain Mr Beef. I reckon everyone was going for the red trim (third company) so I wanted something fresh (green trim is for 4th company)

Thanks for the compliment jimmy72nd - I'm hoping to have more models painted soon.

Hello Miss Dee! I think I'll go for the transfer sheet when I build up enough courage to make an order from forgeworld! Theres so much stuff I want from there I'm going to have to build up my discipline and make a concise order. But I have ordered some of the shoulder pads and bolters from bits and kits, should be arriving tomorrow I hope!

More updates to follow soon!

The updates look good! and i like the green of the 4th company!!! Any sign of your friend sending you mr shrike???

I've been hard at work, some think quiet Ravens have given up, but not me! I've been plotting and building and preparing my next strike!!

Here's a melta-gunner from a 4th edition army. Now Codex Marines aren't allowed melta guns and command squads aren't allowed jump packs, so it was time to disarm him!!

I had tried cutting his arms off with a knife, but then I found that I could get good purchase with my hobby drill, so that's a tip for anyone who needs to take arms off their marines!

Here's some pics...

Here's the beginning of my plastic shrike, I want to get an epic pose out of the plastic pieces to have an original model...

Here are some pictures of inspiration, and then some photos of the work in progress

PLEASE NOTE - the first photos are NOT MINE, I wish I could take credit for them but they are for reference...

Shrike looks promising so far!

Also, ive never noticed that AMarines cant have meltaguns, whoops!

Vitruvian - have you been playing your assault marines with meltas?? Blood Angels are allowed them, but not codex space marines.

I'm gonna get working on that left leg, updates incoming!!

Raven Guard Blog @ 2010/10/18 19:06:05

Post by: niallkissick

Thats why i love my blood angels!! melta melta and more melta!!!, DOA D6" scatter, im within the double trouble melta range

Raven Guard Blog @ 2010/10/18 23:03:41

Post by: CaptainRavenclaw

Yeah yeah Niall, Blood Angels are the best. Assault Marines as Troops. Reduced cost Razbacks, move 12" Vindicators. Whatever. Lets see how the tournament goes!!

Here's a last update on plastic shrike before I go to bed. The left leg isn't going just as good as I had hoped. Here its blutacked to the ruin to get a sense of pose, but I might have to sculpt a new thigh bit of the leg to get it looking anywhere near decent!

Feedback and constructive criticism are very welcome!! Also note the back pack that is being glued together with the aid of a highly sophisticated model building technique, I call it 'Clothes Pegs'. I helps get a smooth fit.

Very naughty Vitruvian, but an easy mistake to make!

Niall, I'm going to have to paint like a fox with a burning desire to paint really fast!!!

Thanks Newt but I have to confess, most of the stuff on the first page isn't mine. Korvydae and the freehand are just pictures I was using for inspiration! But the scouts and the tacticals on the bottom of page one are mine.

More updates to come! I just hope I can get this leg positioned and glued in place!!

Post by: CaptainRavenclaw

He is coming along nicely!! His body is all glued back together and I'm quite happy with the pose achieved! I'm going to spray him tonight so this will be the last photo of him before paint! I'm going to green stuff the knee and left shoulder join slightly, just to take the angular gaps out. I hope I can paint him up to do him some sort of justice!!

Tournament this weekend in Dublin so I'll let you know how I get one, and hopefully I'll get some good photos too!!

Sorry for the long hiatus, I've been gaming and collecting more than painting and WIP Blogging!

But here it is; a wee teaser for ya's for my summer project. This wasn't planned and came as a surprise to me, but I have enough men to make a full company of Space Marines! This is the dream and now the plan is to get them all painted to a tabletop standard and get all the kudos and praise that is available

Sorry Miss Dee - I can't remember what you asked!! Was it about the Land Speeder Storm? Or the Transfer Sheet? I'm so bad at completing projects, but this summer I've just laid out all my Raven Guard so I can get them all painted up and beautiful.

@S.J.Mccartney: Hello again,

Little update on the Raven Guard codex. back in January I joined The Codex Project when it debuted, and since then have had a massive, massive, massive rework of the codex. As of earlier last week it now is an official playtest codex for the site!

www.thecodexproject.com/

We axed all the characters I invented (aside from the Master of the Shadows, the CM) and stuck to the ones in the fluff. And using said fluff (mostly inspired by the Ordos Umbra) we came up with a completely new unit that replaces both the Sternguard and the Vanguard. In addition to all of this, we've tweaked the troops choices a bit, limited the vehicles, and are currently working on writing fluff and balanced psychic powers.

We'd be honored if you playtested it.
