I've been getting some teaser images of late from THQ (though they have been hiding the source - the emails are from 'Kaptin Bluddflagg') and now there is finally a good one that I can share.
Begin speculation, I dont know what it is, there is no other info beyond 'Light da fuse' and 'And call da boys. Da kaptin iz here.'.
I'd wager a new Dawn of War addition in which you play as Orks in the single player campaign, but could be anything at this point. I'll update as I get more info.
warpcrafter wrote:I hatehatehate the pirate meme, but a DOW2 add-on with Orks front and center would be worth the headache.
Orks were pirates before the Internet as we know it even existed.
In other news, I'm swooning over here. The new Dawn of War II expansion is called Dawn of War: Retribution from what I recall, and it's supposed to be the last ride of Gorgutz 'Ead 'Unta. Relic wouldn't let the MMO guys use him because they had plans for him in the next DoWII expansion.
Freeboota! An epic Fighta Bomma Flight Sim with a mercenary component a la Wing Commander. Highlights will be the repair mode and kustomization. Both will be first person hack and fix where you must remove burning and malfunctioning components from your loyal krew of grots. At least, that's what it is in my wildest dreams.

The plot thickens, I just had a box arrive from fedex with a large ork pirate flag - roughly 2x2.5 foot in size. Pic attached. Showed it to my wife who just laughed at the strangeness.
The box is from THQ in the US and lists the content as 'Promotional Flag'. There is no other info at all.
I kind of doubt it's for Space Marine I mean why would they be advertising an add on for a game that hasen't even come out yet? I woulden't be surprised if it's a seperate game I mean they made Fire Warrior for whatever that was worth and now Space Marine. Maybe they'll be making a game for each of the races.

Sid Meier's Pirates! ;-)
Lorek wrote:That's not for Space Marine. First thing I did was look at the picture closely; his Shoota is totally at a "Dawn of War 2" level.
Dude that doesn't even make sense - the image is a paintover, a digital illustration. There may be a basic render underneath there to get the lighting down and such, but the fact the image is quite clearly a 2D drawing done with a WACOM and therefore transcends any notion of detail level makes your point completely moot. Sorry but if you're gonna claim to have looked closely you pretty much missed the single most important factor - it's a concept image.
This excites me. I want to play a Pirate Orks game like there's no tomorrow.
I like the idea of more 40k games that have other protagonists beyond the Imperium. Tau had their game, maybe they could have another. I can't imagine Dark Eldar, Necron, or Tyranids being a whole game, they might be left as antagonists. Eldar could work for more of an RPG about mastering all the Aspects as you attempt to become an Autarch... Dark Eldar could always be a consequence of some part of the game.

This doesn't make sense. First off, Space Marine is a stand alone game. Second, you say that Space marine, is an add on before saying it's a stand alone. What side are you on? Thirdly, everyone advirtise before something's available. They do it for movies, video games, new miniatures, new tv shows, ect.

The big thing mentioned in here is the revelation that it will not just be an Ork campaign. It looks like every race in the game will be available for single player.
I was in the multiplayer beta, and at the beginning of the year (before release) they had been working on the campaigns for the races but stopped in order to focus on the Blood Ravens campaign. So apparently they've decided to finish these campaigns. I hope they are given as much attention as they did the Spehss Muhreenz were.
Melissia wrote:I doubt the Inquisition, Grey Knights, or Sisters are going to be in it, or if they are they're probably NPCs in the single player game at most.
This is probably the case, but it's pretty obvious that Brook just wants his Elysians in virtual form
Hah, I was right. Shame the trailer doesn't show anything new except that pirate Warboss, but it's good to get some confirmation. If they're doing multiple campaigns, does anyone think they'll be like they were in Dark Crusade, or more fleshed out like DoW2 vanilla or Winter Assault?
The new race could be Dark Eldar to tie in with the new codex etc I guess, though given the almost confirmed release of DE in november and the game aimed at Q1 2011, maybe not.
Wouldn't surprise me if they tied it in with whichever army is supposed to be getting refreshed at that point in time, which is Necrons or ][ according to the rumour mill right?

Bitchin' - that looks more like The Last Stand equipment screen than the standard DoW2 one though. Whatever, I'm always on board for more Orks.
EDIT: I'm also guessing the new race will be Imperial Guard, since many of their assets are already in-game. They're visually appealing and offer a new army type to the game (that is, cheap infantry and lots of vehicles)
Yeah, a cheap shooty army. We don't really have one of those in DoW2-- sure you can try making one with Orks or Tyranids, but Guard just do it more iconically.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Though on a weird note, for some reason I'm seeing a lot of people speculate that it's Sisters because of the shape of the I in "Retribution". And it boggles my mind, because I can't see that happening in this expansion...

But aren't Sisters totally best buds with the Inquisition and stuff
I imagine they'll have an Inquisitor who'll be keeping an eye on the Blood Ravens due to the events of Chaos Rising, if anything. Grey Knight Terminators, on the other hand...
I am assuming that the new race is tau, since the orks are a CC type army, while the tau are the complete opposite. But i dont want no Inquisition; I hate the inquisition
Blitza da warboy wrote:I am assuming that the new race is tau, since the orks are a CC type army, while the tau are the complete opposite. But i dont want no Inquisition; I hate the inquisition
Inquisitors locate Blitza's house and knock down the door. Barging into his room, they aim their weapons at him. "DIE HERETIC!". The screams of a dead man are heard, followed by gun shots.
Blitza da warboy wrote:EDIT: now, i see the guardsmen, I hope they get penal legion soldiers!
And I hope for some sentinels, artillery strikes, and Leman Russ Battle Tanks.
I know sentinels will be in-- after all, Relic already released concept art with a Sentinel in it. But the LRBT might be a bit too heavy for DoW2's scale, given that a Predator is the heaviest tank in-game. The LRBT is heavier, better armed, and better armored than the Predator, and its weapons are nastier... though it's also supposed to be a bit slower.
The Ork campaign will be about as long as Chaos Rising, and have a similar structure. There are several branching and optional missions. You also have wargear, leveling, and lots of cool new stuff to unlock.
You start out with a small number of heroes with limited skills and abilities, then quickly unlock more and more abilities for them, as well as find new types of gear to use. In addition to this, you start out able to produce small numbers of sluggas and lootas, and eventually are stomping around with large numbers of orks and ork vehicles.
one of the changes coming is the melee/ranged trees are being merged into a single offensive tree. We also make a point of unlocking a new ability with every level, guaranteed. This means you are get to choose a new ability or trait every time, and the rewards are always meaningful.
Given that its an Ork campaign I have to question why they're calling it "Retribution," maybe they should have gone with a different name.
Melissia wrote:Yeah, a cheap shooty army. We don't really have one of those in DoW2-- sure you can try making one with Orks or Tyranids, but Guard just do it more iconically.
I've always wondered how guard would work in the DOWII format. The game emphasizes these 4 or so squads running around doing these missions, but keeping the basic size of the units the IG would be outclassed since they can't take advantage of their numerical superiority. I imagine they need to either make the units all non-basic Veterans, Storm Troopers, Ogryn, and Ratlings... give the commander a "without numbers" type ability... or simple give them 5 or 6 squads where the other factions might otherwise have 4. I could imagine the IG would take the mind set of your units representing a veteran platoon, to explain the smaller squads, where with level progression outside untis like ogryns or sentinels could be attatched.
Curious to see if the various race campaigns all have the same story from varying perspectives or if each one has a unique plot. Hopefully it's the latter of the two options since it would be disappointing to me if the blood ravens campaign didn't continue from the end of the last expansion.
Here's hoping the new race is the Imperial Guard
Wonder if we'll be able to import our chaos rising saves for use in Retribution.
BrookM wrote:Looks like the =I= might be in it as well.
Inquisition having some role in certain single player campaigns could make sense given the events of Chaos Rising.
Though I'm not all that excited about Orks, I am very glad to see them moving away the from woefully overdone SM-only campaigns.
Gives me hope there will be be a Tau campaign someday...

Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.
Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment. Keep it up and you could turn into one of the more annoying forum members who bitterly cling to certain things or actively denounce everything until there is proof, though even when presented with proof they will deny it. They also like using *'s a lot to emphasize that they mean *serious* business.
Or you could end up like the DoW2 official forums dweebs, who constantly go around bashing every faction but the one they want to see put in, saying only THEIR chosen faction deserves to be added in (Tau fanboys saying Guard should be dropped, for example).
Nasty breed of people that. If you can call them people with a straight face.
I'm beyond happy that it's an Ork campaign. The Ork/Chaos campaign in Winter Assault was the best part of the original Dawn of War series. I was disappointed that Chaos Rising was from the Blood Raven's perspective yet again.
aka_mythos wrote:Given that its an Ork campaign I have to question why they're calling it "Retribution," maybe they should have gone with a different name.
Remember the Blood Ravens have some 'betrayal' issue/plot in the past game.
Eurogamer: When are we going to see Dawn of War III?
Danny Bilson: Retribution's going to ship in February, and then we start laying out Dawn of War III. You can probably expect it between 18 months and two years after that.
It may be a more digital free-to-play experience with all the depth and quality of a Relic RTS.
Eurogamer: Any new races?
Danny Bilson: You'll see at gamescom.
Eurogamer: So Dawn of War III may be like Company of Heroes Online, then?
Danny Bilson: Could be. It all depends on how COHO does, and how it works and how people respond to it. If they do that would definitely drive us to... Now Dawn of War III, either way, is going to have a much larger strategic component to it, more of a global battle going on with little tactical things, sort of MMO-like.
Dark Millennium was also mentioned
Eurogamer: I've been excited about the Warhammer 40K MMO for a long time. When will it be out?
Danny Bilson: A couple more years. It really is about two years out.
You know being an ork is a completely different experience than being a Space Marine, and being a Space Marine alone is a very different experience than being a scout or an Imperial Guard or any of the other Imperium of Man that you're going to see in this trailer.
What does being an Inquisitor mean? That's down the road somewhere. I always say too much in these things, but I get excited.
But you won't be able to be a Space Marine right away, because that's a very unique class, if you know the universe. The road there is a great road, and they are in the game.
The Wolves are fantastic. I'm a Dark Angel fan myself. Neither of us are the core race in there. But I'm insisting we encounter and have experiences with some of the other core six chapters along the way.
Some of that will come later. Some of it'll be at launch. I can't wait to come across that Dark Angel fort and those guys and their mission and what they're all about, because that's my favorite chapter.
But the Wolves are phenomenal, and I'm sure they're represented somewhere down the road as well. You know how deep this universe is, that we have so much cool stuff to mine.
Melissia wrote:Guard are also the not a CC type army, and are far more likely given that Guard actually appeared in the video whereas Tau didn't.
Also, they have a ton of Guard stuff featured in Chaos Rising. Maybe =I= with IG allies as a new rave? One can hope.
Sounds feasible maybe an Inquisitor with members of his/her retinue filling the role of other squads, i.e Inquisitorial Storm Troopers, Veteran Guardsman etc.
GW is shying away from the notion of Inquisitors being front line soldiers, not that they don't, just that they play less substantial roles once the fighting starts. THQ/Relic can always interpret things on their own. I'm inclined to believe that for a hypothetical "Hero" they'd just consider giving him body guards or a command squad to beef up his "individual" ability rather than having him walk around on his own. Hell if he could take an Ogryn bodyguard as an upgrade would he need to be an Inquisitor?

If you remember when the original DoW came out and then the expansions they nerfed things just to impose their sense of balance. I wouldn't put it past them to have a LRBT if its to balance with the rest of the IG, or they impose restrictions, or buffing or nerfing the predator to make it jive better with each other. What is true before an expansion can always change afterwards. In campaign mode its easy enough to make it appropriately powerful and just make it scenario or mission driven. Who knows, maybe one of the IG characters is a vehicle drivers, progressing from Sentinel -> Chimera -> LRBT. Which ever way they go I hope they don't short change the IG.
At the end of a recent vid (in German if I'm not mistaken) an Eldar says "The Inquisition is coming" or somesuch. I hope this means Sisters rather than Inquisition, but meh. Inquisition itself doesn't have much to offer (inquisition plus grey knights or inquisition plus deathwatch would basically just be a remodel of the current Space Marines or Chaos factions).
Well, the "i" in the retribution logo posted is the Inquisition's symbol, with the 3 slashes. I'd assume they are interested in the Blood Ravens after what happened in the last expansion.
What? No, they're making a new race. It's going to be announced at Gamescon, which is going on this week. So we'll know what faction is added in by sunday.

You take that back, I love sergeant camofacepaint. It also makes me wish I could have dedicated squads of close combat Guardsmen in tabletop 40k, as undeniably terrible as that would be.
