Skaven 2nd wave @ 2010/08/16 16:58:11

Post by: Kroothawk

Guess it's about time to collect the rumours on the upcoming 2nd wave for Skaven. Some things were mentioned in other threads, but they now deserve their own thread.

1.) 6 blisters, 3 of them the metal Rat Ogres before the current plastic version( Stitch Spikegouger, Ironclaws, Maulerblades, $22.25 ) in September together with the release of a bitz pack (Skavenslaves Sling Upgrade Pack, set of 20, $8.25). Later, one blister Ikit Claw, one probably Tretch as the last of the 6 blisters.
2.) 2 plastic boxes, one maybe HPA (model completed, but not certain if in this wave), also rumours about a set of 3 weapon teams and early rumours about a Catapult and a warp canon. Yes, can't be all true.
3.) Spell cards
4.) Skaven Art Book

Scryer in the Darkness made a nice riddle, saying that the names of the three unknown blisters can be made of the letters in this sentence:
"A readable geek rumour pitch list: slings, cows." But nobody has solved that riddle yet.

Funny thing about a possible September release: These products are not on the September news poster. But should be at least this year according to Scryer's list of product codes.

Not shown in your list but I'd appreciate some new rat Ogres. The ones in the big box really don't fit with the horrid plastic ogres or any of the previous models. I'd rather that the other blisters were weapon teams as you don't need masses of multiples of them.

Re Rat Ogres.

Previous Metal ones coming up for Direct Only soon. When I dunno, but I'm having all three.

A readable geek rumour pitch list: slings, cows

not sure its genuine.......there are two u's to use and yet not enough p's for plague priest, or plaugeclaw catapult or n's for gutter runners, or t's for throt the unclean.......

How else can you use the u's to spell something out from the skaven army book

You get plastic ones in the new Starter Box, so two things are possible:

New plastic box.

OR

The only place you can get the plastic Rat Ogres is in the starter, like the DeffKoptas out of Black Reach.

This. It doesn't make sense to release multiple kits of the same thing at the same time.

Re: "A readable Geek rumor pitch list: slings, cows"

I doubt very much that this is correct.

The following units (which need new blisters, or I could conceive of receiving new blisters) don't work:

Gutter Runners (not enough n)
Poison Wind Globadiers (not enough n)
Tretch Craventail (no v)
Jezzail Team (no z)
Doom Flayer (no f)
Great Pox Rat (no x)
Plague Priest (not enough p)
Grey Seer (no y)
Chieftain (no f)
Throt the Unclean (not enough t)
Thanquol/Boneripper (no q)
Lord Skrolk (not enough k)
Vermin Lord (no v)

I don't see them releasing metal models for anything that is currently available in plastic, so that would eliminate:
Giant Rats
Clanrats
Stormvermin
Skavenslaves
Plague Monks

Really, the ones that would hypothetically work are:
Warlord
Assassin
Censer Bearer
Rat Swarm
War-litter
Ikit Claw
Rat Ogre
Weapon Team

Since you need a 'b', you have to use Censer Bearer.

That eliminates Assassin (too many s). Since you need to use 2 x 'c', you need to take Ikit Claw.

That eliminates Warlord, Rat Swarm, War-litter, Weapon Team.

And once you eliminate those, you eliminate the ability to utilize every letter in the riddle (you actually do that once you eliminate the assassin).

So you can't use every letter - at which point the riddle becomes mostly useless.

Anyone else want to weigh in on this?

A readable geek rumour pitch list: slings, cows

Yea definately no way to use those u's etc

I can get Globadiers & weapon teams, but then end up with letters that cant make anything.

Post by: Prophecy07

Could be that he meant you could spell the names with the letters in that riddle; not that it was an anagram. So if there's an "s" in the riddle, you can use as many "s"s as you want to spell the items.

Why did they do that? Why restrict the deffkoptas to the main game box instead of actually selling them, because they would sell I'm sure.

Is called a Feature and Benefit.

Combined with the money saving on the box price, and the decent re-sale value, you can flog more of the core product.

The only place you can get the plastic Rat Ogres is in the starter, like the DeffKoptas out of Black Reach.

Let's see:
3 modular Rat Ogres in the current plastic kit.
2 Rat Ogres in the starter
3 metal Rat Ogres with bandages before the plastic Rat Ogres.
3 metal Rat Ogres before those.
2 Rat Ogres for Mordheim (one Eshin, one Skryre)
2 versions of Boneripper.
1 Rat Ogre for Bloodbowl
that's 16 different Rat Ogres from GW alone (not counting the one on the new screaming bell and all the non-GW Rat Ogres for Bloodbowl). Guess you have to take one of those then

BTW Ikit Claw and Tretch are considered "known" and not among the three unknown blisters in the riddle.

Guess I'll have to watch ebay after the starter box is released for more rat ogres.

Like the deffkoptas, the ogres would definitely sell. I know some people who bought a second AoBR box just for the koptas.

On the subject of Ebay, there's something I don't get.

Why pay Ebay prices for part of the box, when you can buy the boxed set, and take to Ebay with the bits you don't want, thus standing to make a profit?

Skaven 2nd wave @ 2010/08/16 23:48:06

Post by: Ktulhut

Because if everyone did that, there'd be no one to buy the contents on ebay?

Skaven 2nd wave @ 2010/08/16 23:53:00

Post by: Mr Mystery

True...if *everyone* did it.

But most won't. All I'm suggesting is being the one to make the profit, rather than a dubious saving (after all, if you pay £10 or £15 for the Rat Ogres alone, the extra cash would have bagged you a rulebook plus lots of other models you're likely use).

Some people just don't want to wait, and buy two boxes so they will have everything they need. Also, getting outbid an ebay happens when you think you have an auction all to yourself.

Riddle was solved. It's the three Rat Ogres. Didn't know the three classic Rat Ogres had names (the ones before the plastic Rat Ogres).

Release 18th September:
Stitch Spikegouger, Ironclaws, Maulerblades (classic Rat Ogres) $22.25
Skavenslaves Sling Upgrade Pack (set of 20) $8.25

No, that's an ATO release, and hardly a second wave.

Me, I find this pretty cool (and mentioned about the Rat Ogres in an other thread first). Could do with some Slings in my Ratses.

The old Rat Ogres were absolutely incredible models, some of my al time favourites. The Blood Bowl Rat Ogre look perfect alongside them too, giving you even more variety.

http://www.solegends.com/citcat94/cat1994040-02.htm

I'd love it if these fellas were re-released as part of the Collector's Range I would be deleted as the price would tumble on EBay and I could pick up a few more.

Sadly they do not quite match the plastics in Island of Blood, but you can't have everything. At least the crappy ones available now might be gotten rid of.

September is the month of the starter box, remember?
This is just an appetizer, as new models are on the way (Ikit, Tretch, 2 plastic boxes), but not that soon. Don't know when, someone said next year. There will definitely be a HPA model some day, prototyype is ready and has been seen.

From a Warseer member having a peek at the September WD:
The majority of the Skavenslaves pack is obviously the slings, although there do seem to be other components in the bitz pack as well. They are in line with the quality of the plastic clanrats components (which were pretty good) but there is nothing ott in it. A good, useful pack though (and of course metal).

More sketchy are what appears to be 2-3 fantasy character blisters for the collector's range (ala Dark Elf Dreadlord release) which I think may be Skaven (although my viewing of September White Dwarf was pretty pressured)

These are obviously in September.

Unfortunately, in the trend of this year's issues information for October and November is EXTREMELY limited, basically a bit of artwork with a header saying "Next month: High Elves" or eq. I also wasn't able to peruse the battle report enough to see if any of the forthcoming releases were being used.

A confirmation by Harry over at Warseer:
If it helps any I am pretty sure the Skaven wave is in January.(...)
Actually I am pretty sure GK are in January too.

Good time to mention that people buying two starter sets on release day get a free Skaven or High Elf coin thingy while supply lasts at GW stores.

Frgt/10 adds the following tidbit about the October release:
i can confirm that the 2nd blister is in fact NOT a high elf blister.
it's a sculpt for the skaven warlord from IoB
the HE prince is not the same elf as on the griffon (different names), however it is the main HE protagonist from the IoB as well
they will both be a limited release

Just to keep this information in a thread with the right title, before the "big announcement" thread is locked

Warlord Spinetail (the rival of the warlord of the starter box, mentioned in the WD background article as following him to the IoB, although not mentioned in the box itself), to be released 23rd October:

GW website wrote:And believe it or not, that's just the beginning of the celebrations: the 23rd of October is the global The Island of Blood battle day, when every Hobby Centre around the world will be hosting a refight of the Battle for the Island of Blood between the forces of the High Elves and the Skaven. We'll feature the results, as well as highlights from some of the most impressive games from around the globe, here on 'What's New Today' - so if you want to be part of the action and help make wargaming history, make sure you pop along to your local Hobby Centre and get involved. To commemorate the occasion, we're even releasing two special edition miniatures, Prince Althran on foot and Warlord Spinetail. Both miniatures will be available from the day of the global battle (23rd October).

Possible candidates are Ikit Claw, plastic weapon teams (see below), Warp cannon (even when Night runners need it more urgently), plague catapult, HPA (not sure if it is ready for release) and Tretch Craventail. Early rumours suggest 2 blisters (Ikit and maybe Tretch) plus 2 plastic boxes. Plus spell cards of course.

For the art book expect something like this art from the BRB:

Here some new confirmations and details on the second wave by BramGaunt over at Warseer:
Though most of it was confirmed, i'll tell you anyway:

Tretch is indeed released in this wave. He's sitting on a piece of the same archway the screaming bell is mounted upon. He has a dwarven beard with him. The new ikkit claw is amazing, very similar to the previously posted artwork.
New weapon teams for the drill and the cutter. Both are metal miniAtures.
Hpa- just what you would expect. It fills out a chariot base.

Warplightning cannon and pcc look very good aswell. Cannon is mounted above the ground on a wooden framework.

I wasnt allowed to look into the artbook, but its real and looks promising.

Summary:
1.) Tretch Craventail (metal blister)
2.) Ikkit Claw (metal blister)
3.) Warp Grinder weapon team (metal blister)
4.) Doom Flayer weapon team (metal blister)
5.) Hell Pit Abomination (plastic box)
6.) Warp Lightning Cannon/ Plagueclaw Catapult (plastic box)
7.) Skaven artbook.

We must be due the advance order on Monday. What do people reckon?

For some reason, I've been quite fancying a Plagueclaw Catapult in recent weeks. I'm praying the HPA is not too amazing because the wife will murder me if I get another large model.

Quite pleased how many Skaven warlord/chieftain models there will be. Island of Blood, Spinetail, Craventail and the Gamesday Miniature. Skaven never used to have a decent warlord mini at all

It seems a shame to grumble, but with the exception of Deathmaster Snikch, Clan Eshin has been left rather sparse of decent models. A combined Night Runner/Gutter Runner box set would have been nice.

Perhaps. But the past few months most Advance Order additions to the GW website have been on Tuesdays, and supposedly they changed that to Wednesdays from now on in consideration of their store operators, many of whom are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. It's a way of capturing more Advance Order dollars in the stores rather than having people be forced into doing it from home on days the stores are closed.

It's friday now and still nothing. My bet is they are waiting on the free shipping thing to end before they post them.

I'm betting they just put it off another week because they didn't want it competing with the December splash items they are still trying to push out of the warehouses like the Monster Figure Case.

And I'd be surprised if free shipping ends soon, it's been a huge winner for them. All that "only X free shipping days left" stuff on the website, isn't that about the number of days left for free shipping where they can guarantee delivery by Xmas? I don't think it's about ending free shipping entirely, it's about not having to pay for upgraded shipping methods to ensure delivery before Dec. 25.

Maybe I should have clarified, the flayer itself is about as high as a dwarf could reach, but obviously more massive. It would be a neat bowling bowl for a Giant.

They'd be foolish to stop the free shipping, it's the only reason some people buy from them still.

There's nothing in the small print about it ending any time. There used to be I think, but not for at least 9 months I'd say.

Seems like the new Skaven are already shown on new release booklets in all Spanish GW stores for at least 2 days, but noone in Spain could be tricked to photograph and post them yet. So we have to wait. Only confirmed: HPA will be 39.00 € and warplightning cannon/plague catapult will be 26.00 €.

So... $45 or $50 for the HPA, and $35 for the Cannon/Catapult. I guess those are reasonable prices with how things have been.

Yes, but here in lies the problem with some of the older stuff now looking very outdated, particularly the plastic Night Runners with huge hands. Still, at least there will be models for everything in the book now.

Anyway, roll on those preview pics!

There's a bit of that already with the Plague Priests in the battalion box. They are the old models based around the aesthetics of the Night Runners that were developed for Mordheim (or certainly around the time of that game). Usually this wouldn't worry me much but the new Skaven models are very stylised and have sharply angled muzzles. That then means that many of the old rounder faces look very odd. But having said all that GW re-released the old metal rat ogres which were horrible (but are more in line with the recent aesthetics of mutilated and bandaged monstrosities). I guess that speaks to how dire the plastic rat ogres are. I'd rather go hunting for the ones from the big box from 'bits' sites/ebay.

Thanks for the pics!

First impression:
1.) My favorite model and surpassing my expectations is the shredder.
2.) Ikit is an okay variation of the existing warlord models, but far too close in pose and detail to justify an extra model.
3.) The Plague catapult is also a bit uninspired, just a catapult with no visual extras. Not a model you buy whatever the rules.
4.) The cannon is an okay variation of the old model but suffers from being in the same kit as the catapult. Personally I prefer the old model, but I have a good idea on how to convert it to look better (lower the cannon and add a roof).
5.) Expected the HPA to be closer to the original art. This one is very difficult to paint well, would have preferred the main head to be more rat-like. I have no final opinion to this one, also depends on all the choices in this kit (e.g. the seen alternative Skryre arms and jaws). But there are two other non-GW takes on a HPA that I both liked on first sight. At least we have now several good options for this unit.
6.) Warp grinder and Tretch seem to be missing on the preview pics.

Agreed, doomflayer wins it for me, and is also the only model I will likely buy (three of)

On Ikit, he was my favorite special character back when I started fantasy, and I think I prefer the original sculpt of him I've still got kicking around somewhere.

Shouldn't be too hard to make both the catapult and cannon out of the same box, with a little creative use of plasticard. Will definitely be getting almost all of these (Ikit and the Doom Flayer don't do anything for me).

While the Doomflayer does indeed look almost exactly like the one in the book... I wasn't that thrilled with the look of the one in the book. I've converted three from other weapon teams (two from Ratling guns and one from the IOB Warpfire thrower) that I like better.

I have to be honest, I am quite disappointed with the catapult/cannon, maybe it's just the pics but I still prefer the old metal one. At least the old one actually looked like a weapon, not a meteorite with an antennae! In a plague-klaw configuration, it would look really awesome if they didn't use the massive warpstone chunk as the counterweight, it just looks tacked on and doesn't fit in at all.

As for the HPA, I'm not sure yet.

Can't comment on anything else, as the rest of the images have exceeded the bandwidth!

Unless we get some shots of plastic weapon teams/globadiers (or at least something I can convert) I feel quite disappointed with the pics so far, considering how much hype was given to the rumours.

You know, like when you get to the toy part of a kinder egg.

EDIT: Having now seen all the pics properly, (they came up after I posted my little rant ) I am now sold on the HPA, what put me off was the pic where the model has quite clearly only been done using 2 paints, tallarn flesh and gryphonne sepia!, the more colourful one looks rather more striking).

Like the doomflayer, despite having the parts specially ordered to make one now sitting in my house (these may now be used to convert a better WLC, given the lacklustre model shown).

As for Ikit, just had a little nerdgasm there...

Is that just for the UK? The US site shows nothing of the sort, at least that I am seeing.

If it does have a "while stocks last logo"...it may be that they're doing what they did with the Apocalypse formations or the big Imperial Strongpoint set.

Limited release in stores for a bit, then available all year on the site/direct order.

Looks like we broke the US site... But before it went down I did notice that the HPA had a little "while stocks last logo"...

UK site is down too now.

Don't panic and don't forget your towel. The HPA is not a splash release, it's an expensive new kit with a full color printed box and it will be around for an indefinite period of time like any other similar kit. And the website is back up. HPA link.

Also, the Skaven Uniform and Heraldry Guide does not appear to be a splash release either.

I really like that new picture. I was very wishy washy on if I liked this model, but that picture definitely pushed it more into the "like".

Splash or not, I'll still get the book from GW, I want more ideas on what to paint my Clanrats dang it.

Is it me or does the Warp lightning cannon look a little too high up on the model. I know this could be fixed by a hopefully simple conversion by mounting it upside down, still it looks a little off as it is but the cannon itself looks very promising indeed.

Most people feel the same way.
Just assemble the plague catapult, take the warp cannon barrel and put it in here:

I just ordered the magic cards.. last time I missed out on the high elf cards :( from now on if there's a while stocks last thing I want, I gotta just order it from GW. Missed out on the collector's ed of the new rulebook too cuz I thought they'd let my local shop at least get 1 or 2 to sell but instead GW wanted to be stingy.

Don't even have the army book yet but I like the heraldry book, I'll pick em both up when I'm ready to start an army. Right now I'm too busy with too much other stuff but I didn't wanna miss out on the cards

Ugh. Guess I'm going to start scheming about making a Skaven army, only never follow through on account of GW being pricey.

And interesting range of bits there. I noticed that Treech and the Abomination are both on ruins that have similar designs. Are they Dwarven? (Based on the Dwarven ruins on the box for the Abomination)

Going to get the Magic Cards. But perhaps not the models. Looks like some scrote has stolen my Skaven army, so not really in the mood to go buy a whole new one right now.

Well, the GW store I used to work still has most of my stuff in it gaming wise, from when I went on (and promptly failed) the managers course.

And now my red box o'Skaven cannot be found. Which sucks balls.

That Tretch has a boat-load of character... Love the sculpt!

Ikit's a very nice rendition as well. Not 100% sold on the HPA. There was a much "nicer" resin version IMHO in the "people sculpting stuff using GW's IP" realm, from a country where GW will never get them to stop, but they were asking way too much... I prefer the previous Warp Cannon to the current one, but I guess they were limited by wanting to make a kit that could be used for either a Warp Cannon or Plague Claw.

Still, more great Skaven stuff. Almost lets one forget the Monkey-Dog Giant Hand abominations of the last round of plastics!

Valete,

JohnS

That's the second time at least I've heard that today from a friend. I agree, they had to sacrifice a bit of aesthetics on the new kit in order to make a chassis that worked for two different builds. I'm wondering how difficult it would be to cut the profile down a bit when building the Warp Lightning Cannon. I ordered one today so I guess I'll be finding out in a couple weeks. I am happy about it being plastic, the previous kit is one large chunk of metal I prefer to do without no matter how nice looking it is.

I really like the HPA, looks like the b****** offspring of a cthonian from h.p. lovecraft and a skaven mad scientist. I wasnt gonna include one in my skaven army now im tring to work one in, my skaven's fluff is now taking on a sinistrer aspect (deep ones can have multiple meanings lol)

Preordered the cards and book from GW last night, will wait to see if Maelstrom gets the HPA and other bits before I decide what I want to order model wise.

A HPA is a given though.

GW web store does not show the Uniform Guide as a splash, but "independent sellers" are showing it as a splash, which means if you want to buy it from an independent they'll only be able to get a limited number of them to sell, but it should be available from GW for a long time. This is similar as with some other items in the past year that GW sells continuously, but independent stores were only able to get a "splash" of them when they were first released.

I wrote to The War Store early this morning and asked if they'd have the new Skaven items up on their own Advance Order page before the big sale this coming weekend and they said yes and the codes are now up here, including the Uniform Guide.

Well, instead of starting a new thread, I'd rather post it here in this Warhammer Fantasy thread.
Here is what Harry says on the next Tomb Kings release:
2-3 months ???
Not so much.
Even 6 months is too optimistic.
However they are still shuffling in our direction .... although now just visible on the horizon.
(...)
I picked up at Gamesday this year that we should have TK ... 'by this time next year'. (IE By GD 2011) I think if they were in the next 6 months I would have heard something more. If they were in the next three months I would know for sure by now.

It doesn't look that bad if you see it in person. The hpa kit looks complecated as hell to put together.

Indeed it does. I forsee, some time in the distant future, masses of HPA on ebay going cheap on account of being balls of melted, plastic glue drowned miniatures put together backwards!

No more so than any other larger GW kits. I see Rhinos, Predators and the like put together so badly so often with glue drips and smears all over them it's amazing. A lot of "hobbyists" have difficulty with models that have any complexity at all. At least with the HPA it's supposed to look crazy and random.

I have to admit I am loving the new skaven models, in fact I love anything thats plastic multi part, much better then the old days.

I'm really looking forward to see what they will be releasing for the orcs in March seeing as my new year resolution is to start a WFB O&G army.

The HPA looks really good. I'm afraid it'll be one of those things were it gets annoying to look at so many of the same torso But the rest of the body is pretty customizable, so they won't ALL look the same.

Uniforms and heraldry? Where did that come from? Has GW ever come out with a $74 supplement for any other armies (Citadel's "how to paint space marines" is the only one that comes to mind)?

It was started by the one for The Empire a few months/year ago. Its a small book containing images similar to the Space Marine painter (only that its for The Empire)

Something else that has been suggested to me by GW employees at 2 different stores... a 2nd part to the 2nd wave? Another army or more Skaven? They hint at more Skaven, but for the life of me I cannot see what they can put out... food for thought.

Got my advanced order today.... amazing stuff... bought a cannon just to see the fig... I need atleast 7 more of this kit. The HPA is a converter's dream, that thing you can do soooo much with. Normally I am not as thrilled with new releases this stuff lives up to the hype. I am keeping a Doom Flayer in a dice bag to resolve rule disputes... it is crazy heavy, and then I can have lunch with whats in their pocketses as they sleep.
