International 'Burn a Koran Day'? WTF? @ 2010/09/07 21:49:09

Story here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39032043/ns/world_news-south_and_central_asia/?GT1=43001

MIAMI — A Christian minister vowed Tuesday to go ahead with plans to burn copies of the Quran to protest the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks despite warnings from the White House and the top U.S. general in Afghanistan that doing so would endanger American troops overseas.

Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center said he understands the government's concerns, but plans to go forward with the burning this Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the attacks.

...

A Facebook group has been set up called 'International Burn A Koran Day' and is linked to from the church's website. As of Tuesday morning, it had 8,539 members.

A member of the church, Fran Ingram, told msnbc.com that they had a "stack of about 150" Qurans, which she said had been sent from across the world. "We are expecting to burn about 200 at least," she said.

"I think we should go ahead personally," Ingram added. "That's what I think. I stand with the pastors. We need to go ahead with it."

The level of intolerance is staggering, to me.

It's been a crazy old world since 11/09/2001.

My slightly controversial opiniion is that the best reaction to events of that day would have been to ignore it.

And I can find incidents of other people killing hookers, so it's totally alright when I do it.

The big news here, to me, are the generals saying 'don't do it, it'll endanger our troops' and these guys saying 'we're doing it anyway because we're happy to risk soldier's lives for a few minutes of negative attention'.

Support the troops indeed.

You can spell it either way. It's a romanisation of a word that originated in arabic, there's no direct swap for the arabic sound so both k and qu are equally valid approximations.

This to me is just a waste. Will burning Korens bring back the dead? Will it give the families any consolation? Will it help any of the lost souls gain peace in the afterlife?

Though I must say, is the Flying Speghetti Monster accepting converts? And does he beleive in spicy, tasty, tomato saucy death to non beleivers?

This to me is just a waste. Will burning Korens bring back the dead? Will it give the families any consolation? Will it help any of the lost souls gain peace in the afterlife?

Though I must say, is the Flying Speghetti Monster accepting converts? And does he beleive in spicy, tasty, tomato saucy death to non beleivers?

+1 to burning Koreans

When insulting several billion people, you might consider taking extra care to insure you spell correctly.

There are barely several billion people at all worldwide right now, of which only a small number are Korean - it's not like we're talking about burning Indians (1B+, occasionally do this anyways) or Chinese (1B+, less enthralled with the idea of self-immolation). Perhaps check the math scale?

Hey, unlike others, I never said I could type, or spell, or dress myself. The add said "Do you have the urge to chase people with a large stick?"

Gosh, it's amazing how chipper a late night editing video, a pint of Fursty Ferret, a large risotto and half a bottle of Valpolicella makes me feel!

Plus, you can burn images of the Great Speghetti Monster. I prefer boiling them though, preferably those of the Angelhair pasta sect.

Why don't we have a counter-demonstaration and burn bibles?

The only way to end God's tyrany is stand up to him.

Burning bibles is so hack. Marilyn Manson wore that out 14 years ago.

I think that those people are going to get their comeuppance sooner or later anyway.

And here I thought the Koran burning was a counter-demonstration to those guys burning a few American buildings...

I think if were were doing counter-demonstrations properly, we'd be nuking the middle east back to a parking lot!
