Hello DakkaDakka, I've been lurking these forums for months now and I figured it was about time I manned-up and started posting.
I started playing 40k many years ago (in 1998 to be precise) but the lack of friends who were into the game meant I didn't really play many games (that and I was too socially inept to play at my FLGS) so after a year or so I stopped and my collection went into storage until a few months ago.
On a whim, my girlfriend and I, dug out my old models and had a few games (using 3rd edition rules as that's the only rulebook I had) and decided to buy the AOBR set, she'd get the Space Marines (to be painted up as Space Wolves) and I'd get the Orks. Once we had those I set about my old collection salvaging anything that could be used for either force. Thus began 'Finrippa's Warband', named after the habit my Warboss was developing of tearing Tau vehicles to pieces by himself.
Anyway, my goal is to get my force up to about 2000pts but it's made solely for fun, I'm not going for a competitive list I'm going for models I like and enjoy playing with, here's what I've got painted up so far:
It's mostly the AOBR force but with extra Nobs, Grots and Wagons but I have more Boyz, another Deffkopa and some Lootas being painted now.
Now for some WIP stuff, being somewhat strapped for cash and loving custom models I've been trying to prove that with a few spare parts, greenstuff, plasticard and some sprue you can make pretty much anything you set your mind to, first up, an attempt at Wazdakka basing it off a SM bike.
He probably won't see much action but I had a spare bike and figured 'what the Hell?'
Next up is my attempt at a Big Mek, after seeing one of my friends use a Techmarine I fell in love with the modern model and wanted to make an Orky version. I thought I was being original until I saw at least 2 other Big Meks like that here on DakkaDakka but I liked the idea so I persisted, here's where he's at right now:
His 2 claws will be a 'counts-as' Power-klaw and I've magnetised the lower section on the backpack so he can have different load-outs, the orignal idea was to have him with a Shoota/Scorcha for the full Techmarine effect:
I can't help be refer to him as 'Dr Orktopus' when he's like that...
He's also got a Kustom Force-Field attachment as well (which If I'm honest, will get a whole lot more use) but I'll be buggered if I can get a good picture of him with it attached, I'll try again tomorrow when it's light.
So that's it for now, any comments, critique or questions are welcome. I'll try to update this as often as I can, hopefully with some better pictures .

Thanks a lot Cain
I've done a little more work on him tonight but nothing major, should have something of merit to show with him tomorrow (would have been tonight but, alas, run out of glue ).
Anyway, not related to my Orks but I did just finish a little project I started a little while back, I said I'd make my girlfriend a little rabbit as an objective marker (she likes rabbits, a whole lot) and I finally got around to painting it.
You can't see the paintjob particularly well right now but you get the gist (I'm no GD winner that's for sure but I get by). It's made pretty much entirely from Greenstuff and is the first thing I've tried to make entirely from scratch. That's just a standard 25mm base so it's pretty small, Hell, even my Grots dwarf it. Pretty happy with how it came out overall.

Ok, so got around to doing some more work to 'Dr Orktopus'. Properly attached his arms, added some guitar strings for cabling to his backpack and gave him a bit more armour.
I'm going to bulk up his feet a bit (make them look like they can support the weight) but I'm a little at a loss as to what to do (if anything) around the torso. Any suggestions?
26800
Post by: Commander Cain
I think that all he needs is some big stompin feet, they look a bit small ATM. If you wanted to put something on his torso, a small knife always looks good on an ork!
32742
Post by: wib
They are a tad small, yes and you can never have too much stompyness, it's next on my to-do list.
I'll see how he looks with a knife, should have one or two spares knocking about, thanks.

Post by: wib
Ok, so the Big Mek is pretty much finished, a few little bit (mould lines etc.) to clean up and it's ready to prime. Tried a few things on the torso but looked best as it was so left it. Finally took a photo of him with his KFF although due to the angle of the 2 pylons, pictures tend to make it look smaller than it actually is.
Also, got most of Wazdakka's Powerklaw complete, it's by no means perfect (first attempt at scratch-building a weapon rather than just modifying one) but quite happy with how it's going.
Can't really do much more with Wazdakka until I can get hold of some Biker legs sadly so onto the next project: Warbuggies!

Dr. Orktopus is fething awesome, and well in line with the Techmarines!!!
Tiny Rabbit's so cute, I'll have to show it to my GF, it could the first & only mini she'll ever find "not ugly" lol!!!
I'll be following your progress closely!!

I've started work on the Warbuggy and I should have something to show of it properly tomorrow.
However, on an Ork related note, Photoshop beckoned me:
If you can't afford the model then just draw one!

Thanks guys
Anyway, here's the result of my weekends work:
I decided to try and make it entirely from whatever I had lying around, partly as a challenge but mostly out of the fact that I spend far too much money on Bits websites. The majority of it is sprue and plasticard but the chassis is built around an old Cavalry/Bike base (even in obsolescence they still serve) and there's a hacked apart SM bike in there too. Size-wise, I think it's near enough the official mode, that is until they finally release a replacement for a model that was out of date in 1999 that will no doubt be a lot bulkier if the newer trukk is anything to go by. Well as long as the people I play with have no problem with it I guess it's fine but, as always, any critique is welcome.
I really need to stop making things and get on top of my painting...

Ok, just a little update guys, constructed a back end of for the buggy (as previously it had none which I hid by cunningly taking a picture from the front). Nothing fancy, as it's not something that's particularly on show.
Also, I find myself in a bit of a dilemma, I have no idea what to cover these holes up with:
Normally, of course, I'd use the little hubcap things supplied with these wheels but they've all either been used or lost (since these wheels are off models over a decade old) so any suggestions would be welcome.

Hey, feel free, as I said other people have done it before (Hell, there's even a similar Forge World model) but I love to see how different people accomplish it. And thanks.
Not much to update today because I've finally started to get through my painting backlog and since I usually do most of my painting/modelling late at night I always forget to get pictures during the day, any pics I take in this light just look awful... Maybe I should look into making myself a lightbox.
I've also been putting a Land Raider Crusader together for my Girlfriend, It's one of the old metal/plastic ones that I used to use in my Dark Angels Army (I never seem to be painting anything but green) but it's been dismantled, stripped and reassembled, just working on putting some Space Wolves iconography and maybe some pelts on there. Also have some Assault Marines I did a little work on to make them fit the SW theme a bit better. I'll post those when they're done and hopefully I can talk my other half into letting me post the her final painted versions as well.

Still progressing slowly through painting but right now something I've been meaning to do for a little while.
When I first started using this army (and when I was still somewhat sketchy on the 5th Ed rules) I thought my Orks could do with a Looted Rhino transport that was closed-top, this is what I knocked up:
Now, I do like the model, It's got a fairly unique silhouette, but it quickly became apparent after a few games that the closed-top transport and Orks don't go together so well and I should probably re-purpose it, so off came the top!
Now, I still want to be able to use it in it's old form occasionally so I was going to make any new additions slot onto the top (as a quick modification has meant I can now do with the old top) rather then glueing anything to the Rhino itself. My initial thought was to make it some kind of Burna wagon, something like this (fear my Photoshop skills!):
And, if I'm making it so I can use it in multiple roles, why not make a Mek Junka (from Imperial Armour 8) as well?
Then I can have the fun of putting a lot of effort into a model and then nobody wanting to play against it!
Joking aside, does anyone have any suggestions on either design, either aesthetically or in gameplay-usefulness terms? I know Looted Wagons aren't a particularly good unit but dammit I love them and part of the fluff for my army (which I should probably post at some point) involves having quite a bit of looted Space Marine tech due to the Big Mek having a bit of a fascination with Human Technology.

Nice looking stuff here, really liking Dr Orktopus.
Hubcaps - plasticard circles (possibly made using a hole punch), plastic tubing, plasticard cut into hexagonal shapes, protuding axles made from banner-pole, the little joint bits from the old sentinel kit, the grid part from the vents on a smurf-pack?
Wagon - like both the concepts you've put up, could possibly use the old top as a basis for the mek junka - going to have to check IA8 out at some point myself Can't offer any gameplay advice I'm afraid but go with your fluff, meks love looted stuff
32742
Post by: wib
Thanks Monkeytroll
Yeah I went with plasticard circles in the end, did the job all right, certainly better than open holes.
Regarding the wagon: Thanks, at least I'm on the right track. The Junka is just a more reliable Looted Wagon that can be fitted with some fun weaponry that requires a turret so I'd have to remodel the old one pretty significantly. I figured it'd probably take more effort to modify the old one than build a new one.
Plus making stuff from scratch is half the fun

Haven't updated for a while but I haven't been resting on my laurels, oh no, I've been busy. Granted mostly what I've been busy with is playing Team Fortress 2 but I also put some time into painting and after a few pretty solid days at it finally finished 'Dr Orktapus'. Now my painting skills are nothing great usually (all right for tabletop but not something I want to show off) but I really tried to up my game for this one as he was going to be a real centre-piece for my army.
Here he is with 'Kustom Force-Field' on the left and 'Kombi-Skorcha' on the right:
I'm pretty pleased with how he came out overall, much more gritty and dirtier than my others. Although now he makes the paintjobs on my other Orks look worse by comparison but whatever. Also a shot of the rear:
The Team Fortress 2 influence came back here because he carries a 'Golden Wrench' which was an ultra rare in-game item that was given out a little while back and I couldn't make a Mek without some kind of reference to that.
Anyway, now that's out of the way I can get back to procrastinating over painting the rest of my Boyz

Heh, thanks a lot Luna
So, having finished my Mek and being somewhat disinterested in finishing off the wagon (it'll get done when I next get the urge) I got to scrounging through my old models looking for anything salvageable and came across this squad of Terminators:
What with these models being obsolete now (with newer, bulkier, better terminator models being released) and suffering from a horrible 12 year old paint job I thought: 'Why not make some looted Meganobs!' (It seemed a good idea at the time) So first I got to dismantling them:
Now I started tossing ideas around as to exactly how to do it, I've seen people just throw Ork heads onto Termies and call it done but I wanted to go a little further, for one the stance and proportions are off to have an Ork inside so the first thing I did was shorten the legs and extend the body and arms. Once that was done it was simply a matter of plating and more dakka:
So I have a test model more or less done and any input would be greatly appreciated, I plan to do at least 3 of these (maybe 5 if I don't go mad before then) and want a fair bit of variation in how the armour is modified so any suggestions would be great. I was going to leave the shoulderpad with the Terminator crux thingy in it's original owners colours, because Orks like a bit of colour here and there and it shows they didn't get all this armour at once. It would have been salvaged over many battles.
Also, the stance is awfully boring here but I'm going to try and make the others a little more dynamic.
Oh, and just to prove I've not forgotten about the backlog of painting... the warbuggy... now comes in red.

Your Big Mek looks great and I'm liking the Mega Nobz. Keep up the great work.
What you might want to do on the mega nobz is maybe revisit the knee pads. Maybe some ork spikes to make it look a little less marineish. And convert the power fist into a power claw. but other than that I like it.

Hmm, I'll have a look at 'orkifying' the knee area, it does look a little bland now that you mention it, thanks!
As regards the Powerfist, it's a deliberate choice to retain them to keep as much of the original armour as possible. However I was going to make one of them the 'Leader' of the mob and give him a fully-fledged PK to make him stand out a bit more. However I might try a hybrid of the 2 as well, see how that works out.

Ok, Meganob 2 is pretty much done, just needs a few bits of tidying up and for some more 40mm bases to arrive:
And the 3rd (and for now at least, final) one is slowly taking shape:
These 2 are armed with Kombi-Weapons (skorcha and rokkit-launcher respectively) so I'll have one of each kind of Meganob possible partially for the fun of modelling them but also for the purposes of wound allocation shenanigans.
Gotta be honest, I've never tried converting a whole squad (albeit a small one) before and I didn't really anticipate how long it'd take so I'll be leaving doing the other 2 for a later time. They'll get done eventually although the speed of that will probably depend on how these three perform on the tabletop. Hopefully I should have them finished enough use them in a game over the weekend where they will undoubtedly fail, just as any model you spend a large amount of time on will the first time it's used. Still, beats paying 36 quid to buy 3 of the GW models that's for sure, not matter how awesome they look.

While the jaw on the first looks awesome, the jaw on the second hides the face too much while the jaw on the third looks like a box more than a jaw.
Furthermore, the red buggy could do with some pannels a different color to break the lines of the model from being RED!.
That said - officially awesome army and you have me rapt.
32742
Post by: wib
Thanks for the input
The jaws are all experiments really, the second one doesn't actually cover that much but being a bottom heavy gas mask probably accentuates that, finding the correct hight for the metal jaws is something I have a lot of trouble with. The third I do agree looks awfully boxy but it's too late to change it now and it's sort of growing on me, although I don't think I'd do another one like that.
As regards the buggy, I'll bear that in mind, although I'll wait until I finish the driver before doing anything more, don't want it to look too busy once he's in.
Anyway, thought you guys might might be entertained by my latest picture, the product of not being able to sleep and modelling in the wee, small hours of the morning:

Apologies for the lack of updates, I have been busy doing things, I just forget to post them.
Ok, first up is the Looted Wagon, I finally bit the bullet and started building it a new roof, it's pretty much done although I might add a little more detail before painting. Decided to place the Skorcha on a turret for ease of use and detachment in the case of 'weapon destroyed' results. The Skorcha is just an old Heavy Flamer from the Terminators who've been chopped up for Meganobz, waste not want not and all that.
Next is my Warbuggy which is pretty much done painting-wise although I'm not sure about the Blue rockets, might go over them at a later with something less bright. Still quite happy with it overall.
Artsoldier35 asked for some closer pictures of my Looted Speeders some time ago, well here they are. The one on the right was made and painted before I had my army and was made entirely from bits I had lying around (hence old Ork pilot, affectionately nick-named 'Stumpy'). The one on the left was made a few months ago and was my first attempt at magnetizing weapons not to mention using plasticard. To be honest they both need work on the painting but they're passable at the moment. For those interested they're just run as Looted Wagons with Boomguns, RPJ and Big Shootas.
Finally, I had a chance to use my mostly finished Meganobz in a ' 40k in 40mins' game (but we allowed 2+ saves). They actually did quite well, which was a surprise since in such a low points game I figured they'd be a liability, the 3 or them in a trukk are fairly devastating. Annoying this means it looks like I need me some more Trukks, although I think I'll be looking at the old Gorkamorka ones mostly because they're pretty cheap to pick up and I have one or 2 ideas for converting.

Got around to painting one of the Meganobz over the last couple of days, he's mostly done although there's a few bits that need to be neatened up.
I left the shoulderpads in the original owners colours (which I guess would be an Aurora Chapter marine) and as he's wearing a gasmask I made it white to emulate the white helmets on some chapters termies, also it'd probably get a little lost in there if it was darker.

Not much to report on the modelling front, my new looted wagon loadout is primed and awaiting painting, hopefully I'll be able to get it finished over the weekend. The Meganobz have ground to a halt as I'm still waiting on a delivery of a few 40mm bases to arrive, which sucks but what can you do?
I'm also eyeing up my AOBR Nobz, looking into converting one into painboy somehow so if someone has any ideas on how to do so I'd be grateful.

So, I've been pretty busy this last week or so, let's just say I've been 'volunteered' for some charity work that's basically written November off for me so I haven't quite got the time I had before.
However, my elusive 40mm bases finally got here (after getting lost in the post) and so my other Meganobz are mounted and primed... now painting begins.
Also, acquired a spare runtherd squig which with a little modification (read as 'hacking at it with a knife then green-stuffing the remains') has become an attack squig.
So now that I'm out of things to build I can focus on my backlog for painting:

I got my hands on another old Gorkamorka trukk for my Meganobz. Wanted to make it more heavily armoured to reflect it's passengers but in game it'll be no different to my other trukk (vanilla bar RPJ).
If I'd have been sensible I would have taken in progress shots... but I'm an idiot.
Front section from an old Rhino, been looking for a use for that for a while.
Extended the flatbed a little to make it the same length as my other Trukk too.

Also, I finished a Loota, I love these models but there's so much going on with those guns I find it kinda intimidating truth be told. I can just never figure out where to start with them, oh well, 4 more left there too.

Being the kind of person I am I like to include he odd reference here and there in my army, the Golden Wrench from Team Fortress 2, some of my grots have hats from Left4 Dead characters and one of my DeffKoptas has a Bullet Bill on it from Mario. So when I came to painting this particularly angry looking ork:

I have not updated in a little while mostly because I've ill, for srs. I did get a couple of things done before that however, it's just taken until now before I wasn't a half-awake zombie and able to operate a camera without the possibility of seriously injuring myself.
Another Loota, since I have 2 using this gun model I wanted to differentiate them, so I made a little plasma gun addon to replace the standard slugga looking one. Annoying the pictures show off a lot of areas where I was being lazy and a fair bit of touch-up work is going to be needed.

These are great- I like the paint scheme too. Did you use drybrushing for the paint chips and damage? Also did you paint the checks and weather them at the same time as the rest of the armour or separately?

Hey guys, hope everyone had a good Christmas. Speaking of which I've been busy building a couple of things Santa brought me this year...
First up, a Battlewagon. I kept it pretty standard as it's the only one I have but I did patch up the gaping hole between the front wheels:
And here it is in the loadout it'll probably spend most of it's time in:
And in case I really feel like making it a huge target, with everything:
I also got a set of Nobz to replace the AOBR ones in my Nobz squad. Pretty much all awaiting at the very minimum, a bit of green-stuffing.
From left to right: PK and Bosspole, Big Choppa and Kombi-Skorcha, Big Choppa, Painboy and finally, PK and Kombi-Skorcha. Diversified Nobz FTW!

I'm sorry. Your Orks are fantastic (I'm an Orky too) but that bunny on the first page takes the cake. I'm addicted to bunnies too (I have 6) and I would KILL to have a little marker like that. Your girlfriend's a very lucky person that you would do that for her.
And that superglue picture you posted reminds me of my hubby. He glued his fingers together and I had to go to Shoppers at midnight to get nailpolish remover so he could seperate them.
Heh...anyhoo continue with the Orky goodness. Me be big fan.

@bunnygurl: Thanks, sadly my girlfriend is allergic to their fur so by little marker is the closest she can really get.
@Yggdrasil: Thanks dude, I only wish I wasn't suffering from an insane art block right now otherwise there'd probably be a lot more of it.
Ok, so after further feeling ill over the holiday period I finally got around to taking photos of the stuff I've been up to this year.
First up, the battlewagon is being slowly but surely painted:
Also on the painting front, got another loota done, currently making it, on average, 1 completed loota every 2 months
Finally, after using my singular Buggy in a few games I realised how much it would benefit from some friends, so the scouring for suitable wheels began, eventually settling on some old slot car wheels. It's not finished but it's mostly just extra detailing that needs to go on:
And next to the completed one:
Hopefully should have that completed in the next few days and it can go into the 'waiting to be painted but probably won't for another 6 months' pile.

U Sir gave me inspiration
I really liked your docter octophus and loved your Termanobzz (is this a good name you need to give them a different name that just plain old meganobz)
this means the next time I buy AoBR I wont be giving much to my Space Marine wealding friend need to build myself some Termanobzz
keep it up

Post by: wib
@DamienOfTheWRAAAGH: Hey, glad you liked them, I've always thought of them more as the 'Deffwatch' (due to their black colouration and different coloured shoulderpads) but Terminobz works too
In the spirit of shameless promotion and lacking anything of note done to the buggy, I just posted my partner's Space Wolf fiction and anyone here who's interested in such things can check it out here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/341150.page
I personally think it's pretty damn good, although is distinctly lacking in greenskins

Ok, buggy's finished (and as i type undercoat is drying):
I also got it into my head to make some Big Gunz... well one anyway, from the spare kannon from my Battlewagon:
One of my quickest little builds, started it this morning and now it's base coated. However before I started making it I felt like it was time to take a full army picture since the force has grown somewhat significantly since the picture in the orignal post:
Thanks for all the support guys, the whole process of maintaining this blog really helps keep me motivated, as does reading everyone else's, even if I rarely comment on them.

Thanks for the kind words guys.
Also, decided that even though I have some models that have been primed for 6 months yet not finished, I should paint the kannon first. Posed with a couple of spare grots that will suffice until I can be bothered to convert up a couple of loaders.
Not the best picture but my camera and I were apparently not seeing eye-to-eye.

Put some paint on the painboy for the Nobz squad:
But more importantly... I decided to actually take step by step pictures of the next thing I'm building. This will be a Zzap Gun battery, yes I know they aren't very good but after building the kannon (which when I get the appropriate parts will also be made up to 3 guns) I kinda got the bug for artillery and had 3 spare lascannons.
Here's what I've started with: some wheels and axles from some old toys and the aforementioned lascannons.
First order of business is to remove all the cabling from the bottom of the lascannons to give me a bit of a smoother base to work with.
To be continued...

Hey, hey, some nice stuff appeared on here since I last checked in. Really like that new buggy, and I have to agree with Arakasi about the time it takes to finish that paint stuff Painboy looks pretty sweet too
32742
Post by: wib
@Bunnygurl: Thanks, he turned out pretty well although the photos as always just point out where I've been lazy, fortunately not as easy to see in person.
@Monkeytroll: Cheers, still have to think about what I want to do with the final buggy for that squad. And both you and Arakasi are somewhat above me in painting skill so I think you've got more than enough excuse to take a while
Did a little more with my Zzap battery, built up a bit of the body around the wheels first:
Then got onto the important task of adding some orky plates to the actual lascannons themselves, I seem to spend 90% of my time either painting checks or gluing on rivets...
After that they were attacked to the wheels in preparation for a whole heap of bulking up:
Starting to come around to the idea of building things in batches.
32742
Post by: wib
Did a fair amount of work on the Zzaps, made the front panels, complete with lightening bolt glyph and bullet holes.
Then built the back section, adding some screws as weight as the damn things kept falling over.
Not much left to do now, just adding a few more panels and rivets then it's off to be painted... eventually.

My Big Mek finally has a name: Gobwrench! And to celebrate (not to mention try a different colouring technique) here's a cartoony version of him.

Ok, been meaning to grab pictures of these for a while, did the additional detailing a little while back but only 'officially' finished yesterday with some greenstuff strengthening on it's underside. But anyway, here's the new rear end detail:
And a quick shot of them all nice and together:
There, one more useless unit from the codex that nobody uses... but for next to nothing in price! Don't know exactly when they'll get painted as I've run out of primer but have plenty of other stuff to keep me entertained in the meantime... should probably finish off that Battlewagon for one.

Rummaging through my old models I found this sorry state:
This old Grot is damaged, covered in a terrible paint job but he shall live again! He's currently being striped and will go into my Grot mob eventually as a bit of nostalgia, after a fair bit of repair. I know I could just go on ebay and buy these guys by the handful but that's not the point

Absolutely, I've stripped and rebuilt almost an entire army for my Fiancée (from Dark Angels to Space Wolves) and it's pretty damn rewarding to give old models you weren't using a new lease of life.
Certainly cheaper as well, which is nice.

@Skotter: It's just plasticard cut into correct shape then roughed up along the edges with a craft knife, the rivets are just tiny bits of it cut up and stuck on.

The real question (for me at least ) is how you get the curve in the plasticard. Do you just glue it in place like that, or do you heat it and bend it first to help it keep the shape?

hungryp wrote:The real question (for me at least ) is how you get the curve in the plasticard. Do you just glue it in place like that, or do you heat it and bend it first to help it keep the shape?
My usual method is actually to place the piece I want to bend underneith my cup of tea (being extremely British there is always a hot cup of tea somewhere in my vicinity) it heats it up enough to bend into shape before gluing.

Post by: wib
Update time.
So the Grot is stripped neatened up and awaiting a new foot made with greenstuff but, as always, I got kinda distracted by some other stuff.
The first is an old Eldar jetbike I found in my bitz box, it was broken and unloved so I decided it should be made into something useful: An Objective!
The idea being that my Big Mek has somehow got the jetbike flying again but the Boy given the job of test pilot couldn't control it and it's gone flying off out of control. It eventually stops working and falls to the ground leaving the Boy piloting it miles away from his Warband without his trusty shoota and choppa and shouting angrily at the now defunct jetbike.
The second thing was that since I acquired my new Nobz the old ones from AOBR have become obsolete so I figured I'd tart them up with bits left over from the new set meaning I can field my Nobz in a wider variety of ways.
These are the 4 that are completely spare (the other one is set aside for the next mob of Boyz).
As you can see, they're a mass of mould lines and mediocre paintjobs (not to mention the unnatural poses they come in) but with a little bit of chopping apart and stripping the first one is taking shape:

Post by: ghosty
I like the objective, but don't jetbikes, and skimmers in general, kind of nose dive when they fall out of the sky?
And secondly, the Ork looks like he's holding an invisible gun at the mo. Maybe different arms? Not criticizing, as I'm loving your army, and this objective is very characterful, but I'm just throwing some suggestions your way.

Thanks for the feedback.
Yeah it could do with being a little embedded in the ground, it's only blu-tacked at the moment to the base so I was thinking of building up some grooves in the earth beneath as if it had torn it up upon landing.
As for the Ork, yeah I get what you mean but I'm currently at the mercy of what arms I have available and I was kinda going for a "Y U NO" guy vibe. Admittedly the picture is not at the best angle to show that.
36940
Post by: Anvildude
Actually, I'm liking the arms. If you'll notice, it's not actually a pair of gun arms, but two of the 'holding' arms, so he's kind of doing that Italian Mobster thing: "Why, Vinnie? Why ya gotta break down on me way out here?"
26386
Post by: hungryp
I for one love the " WTF!" look of that jetbike pilot.
And as for the jetbike plowing nose-first into the ground, I think it's more suitably Orky that it would have just stopped dead in the air and dropped like a rock.

Thanks for the input guys
Got a couple of Nobz mostly done now (well, apart from greenstuff patching up).
Devoid of any more Kombi-Skorchas I had to make do with what I had to hand, I think this works OK, doesn't look quite as unbalanced in person I must say.
And added some bits to this guy's shoulderpads.
I also drew another Space Wolf, trying out some alternate techniques:
As always, on DeviantArt for people of that persuasion.

It's been a little while since I updated so here we go:
The looted jetbike objective and grot are both complete and go into the 'needs to be primed but have no primer' pile, will get some pictures later.
However, modelling ADD set in again and I decided late one night about a week ago that this old unfinished defiler:
Would look far better like this:
On second thoughts decided it'd be more useful like this:
So yes, my defiler became a deff dread. It' not 100% done, the dead space marine on the base needs some tweaking for one, but it's close enough. Tried out a much more dynamic pose since if I'm havign to rebuild large sections I might as well make it look interesting.
The remaining parts will become parts for another objective and (when I can figure out how I want to do the tracks) a Skorcha buggy

Just give the buggy legs. Nothing says that non-walkers can't still have legs. Bonus if it looks like it's sprinting, to represent the 'fast' quality.

Well then, could do what I've done.
Got a Brass Scorpion (Well, scraps of one) from a buddy who didn't want it, so I tore into it for bits. Took the lower torso bit (The 'horse' part of the centaur) and used it as the back end of a buggy. Put a sprue frame underneath, pointing out the front, and wedging down from the top to the front. Stuck on some bottlecap wheels, and voila! (hey, I spelled it right the first time!) Deffy body's got the underframe for a vehicle, and put the right gubbins on it'll look like a ridiculously oversized engine.
32742
Post by: wib
Yeah that's the sort of idea I was going to go with although as it's going to be a skorcha it should technically have tracks and I know I'd forget that fact without having them there as a visual reminder.
However I've got another rokkit buggy to build before that anyway so I've got a little while to figure out how I want to do it.

Dread's pretty cool, nice sense of movement. You should keep the bar-code showing when you paint him up
You going for tracks either side or a wide single track down the middle ? Or 4 smaller ones, or 3? or...?
32742
Post by: wib
@Monkeytroll: I think it'll be tracks ether side, there's a cheap model tank I have my eyes on that may provide something suitable, although I kinda like the idea of having just one giant central one
Anyway, a little art update in preparation for the Grey Knights codex:
Once again, also up on DeviantArt for those that frequent the site.
32742
Post by: wib
After a quick purchase of a cheap little tank kit I found I was able to start work on my skorcha buggy somewhat sonner than I thought:
Slowly working on bulking it up, it's slightly wider and a lot taller than the official model but it's a bit shorter (a lot shorter if you count the trailer). Was wondering whether to build a trailer for it or not, I assume it counts as a decorative element and isn't counted for TLOS on the official mode so it's all the same really but I'd be grateful of any opinions.

Post by: wib
@ bigmek35 & Wazzdig Dagga: thanks a lot
@ schank23: Why, thank you, I would but my desire to draw things is far too erratic and 6 months between updates would likely annoy
@ da big mek skarfang: Already done! Well a glyph at any rate. And plasticard is a type of plastic that is used a lot in modelling, it usually comes in sheets like paper but is available in all-sorts of shapes.
Anyway, just to prove I do finish what I start (albeit somewhat later), here's the grot I set about repairing, he got a new foot built and trimmed off the remnants of his head spike as I didn't want him to stand out too much amongst the newer, shorter models:
Aaaand the skorcha is more of less done:
A bit of research shows that it's actually not as far off the size of the original model as I thought (barring the trailer) so I figured I'd leave it as is, it's probably not going to be used that much so I can always substitute something else if my opponent has an issue. Oh, and it may not have been apparent from the pictures but its turret can rotate and is removable for transport and weapon destroyed results:
All right, I think I seriously need to get on top of my painting now...

That's a great idea and if I had the spare parts to make it (Hell, I'm even low on plasticard right now) I'd absolutely do it, possibly with a dazed looking grot amongst the wreckage.
'Painting' is a mythical creature that occasionally visits, I do not yet know if it's a blessing or a curse but it sure does cut into modelling time.

Holy jesus! I actually painted something!
But let's not get ahead of ourselves, a couple more Nobz converted from the AOBR ones, certainly look a lot less stock.
Onto the painting, I was bitten by the urge to paint something and got around to painting my other Rokkit Buggy, the wonders of digital cameras have unveiled a few mistakes (although they aren't as apparent in the flesh but regardless will be fixed at a later date) but aside from those I'm pretty happy with it, particularly the driver who I spent far more time on than I usually do. For various reasons I haven't got around to taking any photos of what I've been up to recently, however I have just rectified that. You would have also seen some shots and maybe a mini batrep of a game I had with a friend at Warhammer World last week, but I forgot to put the SD card in the camera when we went, I'm kind of an idiot like that
But anyway, painting-wise I've made a start on the 2 buggies and deffdread:
Close-up of the dead Blood Angel on the base (It's been many a year since I painted a full marine):
On the building front I realised I was actually getting pretty close to my original goal of having a 2,000 point force (granted I can already do that but it wouldn't be a very coherent list) so I've been looking for deals on eBay for the final couple of models I need. I still need a battlewagon and some more boyz but I was able to pick up another old trukk for a few quid:
It wasn't in a bad state but the paint was a little thick here and there and some parts weren't put together particularly well so I stripped what paint I could off of it, extended the flatbed slightly (as I have with my other 2 OOP Trukks) and tried to make it fit in a little better with the modern Orks. Still not 100%
Finally, I begun work on another KFF Mek, what can I say? I love these guys. For a change (and also to help explain why an army of Goffs is using vehicles all painted red) I'll be painting this guy as an Evil Sunz clan member. Early days on him but you get the idea.

Absolutely, I do like the new models but my wallet won't stretch far enough for 3 of those so it's quite fun trying to make those older models fit in with the new stuff.
Anyways, small update, painted my last rokkit buggy:
And got hold of some more AOBR boyz and armed with the contents of my bitzbox and some greenstuff, set about making them look... less AOBR.
Quit happy with the result, they certainly look a little less odd than the standard poses they come in.

It's pretty annoying yeah but worth it to make them look a lot more natural, plus a whole lot cheaper than the Boyz box.
I guess people just think duel-wielding is pretty badass Yeah, I'll be running them as slugga boyz since 2 sluggas plays exactly the same as a slugga and a choppa anyway.

Thanks a lot, I'll bare that in mind with the mek, he's still very much a WIP, partially because I still haven't got any legs for the poor fellow.

I to think legs are over rated. But tracks? No, no, no my friend. Strawberry Jam would be so much better. Tracks are crunchy and oily. Strawberry Jam sweet and sticky.

'Tis a truism that you speak. The tracks are crunchy and the jam is sticky
However, if you only have jam, then once you have licked the jam, it is gone, no more, and then....you have no jam to lick.
But...
If one has tracks, one can move from jam to jam, sampling as one pleases, enjpying the sticky sweetness wherever it takes one's fancy. And no need for limiting oneself to strawberry either. Hmm, think on that....strawberry jam, bramble jelly, perhaps even a smidgeon of thick cut marmalade, all within one's grasp.
Of course in an ideal world it would be jam tracks all the way, but sadly the mechanics of such inevitably lead to sweet spreads being liberally sprayed where they should not be sprayed and locomotion ending abruptly - an all too common sight these days is jam-smeared boyz wailing as they vainly try to drag their oily, sticky torsos away from the attentions of hungry squig-wasps.

All right then, it's been some time since I last updated. I blame, in no particular order: Art commissions, World of Warcraft, laziness and a new project you'll see in a moment.
However I have seen slowly working my way through my painting backlog and have a few things to show you:
Painted up the last of my Trukks, it wasn't in the best of conditions when it started but I think it came out all right.
I also felt like adding a bit of variety to my Goffs so am painting up a handful of Boyz as Evil Sunz, here's the first.
Not finished yet but those Zzap guns are at least painted enough that they won't look too out of place... that is, if I ever use them.
I've also got my hands on some legs for my second Big Mek so I could finish building him and now he's just waiting to be primed.
Unlike my other Mek his KFF actually has a tangible power supply, the power plant from a set of Terminator armour, speaking of which...
I mentioned at the start of this post a new project. Well, as my Orks are now only a single battlewagon away from being more or less complete (from a building perspective) I felt the desire to start a new army, something completely different to my Orks, something that instead of being incredibly numerous and relied heavily on transports why not go for something with little to no vehicles and incredibly low model count.
I chose Deathwing.
However, being the awkward bugger I am I chose to make up my own Dark Angels successor chapter, The Sons of Desolace, and knocked up this test model:
Being fairly happy with that I moved onto:
The lack of a model for Belial meant I finally had an excuse to get this model, he's not quite finished (mostly since the photos showed up what a hash I made of the torso) but I'm pretty happy with him, It's my first Resin model so I was fairly nervous putting it together. He's just played as Belial with Lightning Claws.
And the rest of them, between this lot I have a legal (if horribly optimised) Deathwing army. I've played a couple of small games with it and although I lost horribly, was still lots of fun.
There's more I have to show but I forgot to take photos, so you'll have to wait for those... I'll try to not make it a month until the next update this time though.

Your excuses are almost acceptable, however as an Eve player I'm contractually obliged to disallow WoW as an excuse for anything
Big mek looks cool, are you planning on keeping part/all of the flying stand clear, or was it just a handy size?
Those red and black 'ard boyz look good, but how do the boyz get inside?

And now for the promised actual update...
To start things off on a nice Orky note, I got one of my converted AOBR nobz painted up a bit ago. As always, photographing it shows up numerous errors that aren't really noticeable in person... but that's always the way isn't it?
I also managed to paint up my second KFF Big Mek in Evil Sunz colours (I can now blame him for painting all my Goff's trukks red ).
Finally for the Orks I got around to getting the Deff Dread up to a point where I don't feel bad for leaving it... in all honesty I was somewhat bored of painting it, which probably shows.
Moving on, my Deathwing has received a fair bit of attention in the last few weeks, I guess I felt like they deserved a bit of attention as they actually managed to win a game the other week... Huzzah! One thing I was worrying about was doing the handful of bare heads in the army, I've painted 50+ Ork bare heads, granted, but human heads are somewhat smaller and I hadn't tried painting one in over a decade... and those old attempts were bloody awful. However I bit the bullet and painted this guys head, I know the picture's not great but I was too happy with not utterly ruining the model to not share. Just the rest of him to finish now.
What with all the painting of marines I got the hankering to paint some regular power armoured types, so I knocked this guy together from old marine parts to begin a little Company Veteran squad which can occasionally accompany my Deathwing, he just needs his company marking painting on his shoulder and he's done.
And what with making a vet squad, the desire for combi-meltas appeared, now I have enough problems locating regular meltaguns from Bitz sites and the like so I thought I'd have a go at knocking one together from left over bolters and what was left of a Multi-melta, don't really like the design of the 'official' one, looks too much like a melta-gun with an attached bolter rather than the other way round, quite happy with what I came up with.
Needs a bit of tidying up, any suggestions for improvements would be greatly appreciated.
And finally, proof I actually play the game:
Taken at Warhammer World a few weeks ago during a 2v2 game with some friends and my fiancée, think it was like 1200 points each side or something close.

:O That ork deff dread is just epically awesome, i think its because of the way it looks like it is running and yet really off balence in a orky way. Really nice keep up the good work

Little update of the ongoing effort to get this army fully painted, been working on the Boyz recently, only a handful left now and then these Evil Sunz will be mixed into my Goffs t break up the mobs a little, it's been kinda fun to paint checker board in different colours to be honest.
I also finished off the Skorcha I built a little while back, I should probably never work out how many points I spend on Red Paint Jobs... I don't think I'd like the figure.
Finally, some MkVI Forgeworld armour found it's way into the house, some I've acquired for my veteran marines, quite happy with the outcome:
That's all for now, only 16 models left before the army is fully painted (at least if I don't buy any more Orks) so just mustering the energy for the final push!

Seems I missed an update along the way
Nob and mek look good, and I love the dread Nice 'umie head too
New boyz look cool, and the skorcha is very nice, some nicely worn paint on that.
Probably just the angle, but the knees on that MkVI look a bit weak(model-wise, not paint-wise )

I very much like your idea for the combi melta... though I think the actual melta barrel is a bit large.

@monkeytroll: Thanks a lot. Yeah I took the picture from the worst angle possible it seems, makes his knee joint look weird as hell.
@MagikalMemories: Thanks, yeah I'm not the biggest fan of the normal design of them, although this was purely necessity to be honest as I couldn't afford the 'real' ones. I agree about the barrel but I didn't have any smaller ones spare I'm afraid.

Very nice work. Love the skorcha. The Dread is a nice conversion also.
But I do have to say this. I'm not feeling the marines. I mean the one on the Dread base is awesome. There is just something about marines that arnt dead that bother me.
o.O.ooooOOOOO.... Zombie marines......

You could always tilt your head sideways and pretend they're all lying on the floor, dead. Maybe that'd help?
Anyway, I haven't really done much recently 40k-wise due to the fact I've been busy remembering there's a comic I needed to actually draw stuff for, speaking of which, the latest is actually about 40k.
Sadly this is the only one that is 40k related but if you like this there's plenty more at http://air.thecomicseries.com/.
