New page, new pics! You all deserve it

End of Monday - not much to see here...

End of Tuesday - finally, front wheels starting to take shape...

Now its all well and good being ramshackle, but a lot of effort goes in here to line things up! Why? So we can add detachable "Armour Plates"

Enjoy!

I just crapped my pants! That is too sweet! Great job. One last request on this Trukk. It has to have a license plate with your name on it! This is going to be the trukk my internet squad will ride into battle on and all of the figs have the name of the person who sent it to me on their bases.

@HadoukenAvenger: A conversational hand grenade! Quick! Throw it back...

@Artsoldier35: No sweat on the license plate - though thanks for letting me know early - I'll be able to make sure I incorporate it good 'n propa.

@Everyone:

We are still a *long* way off - I thought I'd be at this stage much sooner... I haven't done spring shocks on the *front* of a Trukk before - so was a little caught out by their being nothing to attach them too... Even then, it was very very fiddly - I think some additional support structure is in order, but that can wait for now.

Of course - it would probably have been easier if I wasn't trying to make sure the bonnet would slip down on top perfectly, including showing the tops of the shocks through the hood...

At the moment you can see the tilt of the vehicle in one plane. The next step is to add the next wheel back on the right (of the picture) to jack the back up - tilting it in the other plane as well - an hopefully resulting in the remaining three wheels hanging free, and, if I'm lucky, sitting stable on the first three... I won't be discouraged if it doesn't initially - I mean I can always work out something further back to prop it up - but I expect all the work I have planned for the front will hopefully weigh it down appropriately.

The end aim? The vehicle should look like it is landing, at an angle, front first - turning as it lands. Should be "ramshackle" enough for Artsoldier35 methinks

You may notice that I have cut off the top of the engine (the air intake?) - never fear - I have *a cunning plan* for that...

@The Good Green: 4mm (diameter) for the outside, 2mm inside, with a 1mm hole for copper rod. The "springs" are 0.8mm wound tight over plastic glue. Had some fun with that - the right (smaller) spring was my first attempt. (Previously I have used guitar wire and "lead" wire - but hey, I like trying different things - not sure which I prefer yet though...)

@Miss Dee: Fixed

Set a dangerous precedent Tuesday night - no painting, all modelling. I blame... laundry. Anyways, back to normal last night:

The right pair are one highlight away from finished (green that is, highlighting that is - the left is two - can you tell the difference?) I don't know how everyone manages to paint marines so fast...

How does it look? Looks a bit Tron like to me so far. Would a green or black wash at the end be recommended?

On a modelling note - don't use plasticard rod for shock springs - use wire. Even paperclips. Trust me on that!

Yeah, they do look a bit Tron-like now that you mention it. Kind of hard to tell as the contrast between the dark figures and the reflection off the table is so extreme, but they look fine to me. The one on the right pops a bit more than the left, so yeah, you can see the difference. And for the record... I DONT paint marines quickly.

I made some good progress on your bug boy over the last few days... maybe one more session of painting and I'll have something worth posting.

@Gitsplitta: Yeah - not a good photo. The iPhone and lamp are fine for modelling, but I may have to try harder with taking pictures of the actual painting! I am both excited and hesitant to see where my bug boy is at - hesitant for when I find out how far along you consider "post-worthy" (and hence how far behind I am...)

@Everyone:

Bad news - no painting tonight (sorry Gitsplitta!). Good news - finally got the Trukk chassis where I wanted it:

I've had to prop up the back wheel in the photos as the balance, as I indicated previously it might, is a bit off at the moment. I'm not sure I am actually going to be able to model enough weight on the front right corner to have it balance naturally - worse case I'll put something underneath the back left to support it (another dead marine perhaps? )

I'm learning quite a bit on this, so the twin (which I haven't even started!) will have some "improvements". At this stage, that will include narrower back wheel guards (so that the top of the back shocks is on the lower floor, as well as looking a bit better I think...) and metal front shock absorber springs. I'll also know the measurements for everything - which should hopefully make it a bit quicker too... Time will tell whether I should have jacked the back up higher or not...

Currently the wheels are not glued on - and they seem to do a fine job of staying on, even without magnets. I'm starting to think the fun I had magnetising my previous Trukk wheels was all for nought...

With "Armour Plates":

Part I of why you should use wire for springs, not plasticard rod (Part II is that its time consuming, frustrating and fiddly for worse results...):

Something softer than a paperclip (copper wire?) would be even better... (I'm so impatient!)

Enjoy!

Why not just use springs? You can get a big box of em at the dollar store.

Because that would be too easy? Actually, getting to a dollar store (or pound store over here...) isn't as easy for me as you might think - it would be easier for me to have it delivered - but that would negate the cheapness... (I work in the middle of nowhere during the week, and da Boss monopolises my time on the weekends - she doesn't get to see me during the week - the joys of living in Scotland and working in England...)

I will, however, keep my eye out - as it were... both on and off line

(I hadn't given it any thought previously. It's a good idea. I knew there was a reason I take the trouble to post these things here!)

Trukk coming along nicely there, I'd suggest floral wire - sometimes sold as bonsai wire - for the springs, nicely malleable.

And what's wrong with the tron look - can you whip up a couple of lightcycles for the boyz next?

hur hur hur. Silly mekboy, putting springs on the wheels. With themz springs, howz we to get the full bumpiness an exitement of ridin da trukk to da front linez!

Anyway, barring the silliness I feel toward shock absorbers on orky trukks (Ciaphas Cain put it quick aptly once), the trukk's coming along quite nicely so far. In the words of our most esteemed Lord Kaesar II, keep it up!

To go along with Lord Kaesar, if Orks actually thought about using spings for shocks, I think they would be just as ramshackled and broken down as the rest of the vehicle. I like the look of the worn out plastic springs. The rest of the build is coming along great. Don't worry too much about the elevation of the back as i may just build it a nice fancy display base to pin it to. Again...looking great!

@monkeytroll: Adding "floral" wire to my list of things to look out for... Nothing wrong with the Tron look - just trying to follow GW painting instructions. I look at theirs and see SM, lok at mine and see Tron - and try to work out what (if anything) went wrong... Thankfully Lightcycles don't really go with my theme - so your attempt to distract me further from painting (while your blog moves along in leaps and bounds) is unsuccessful Of course, if I were to do it, it would probably require looted Tau parts... which would no doubt amuse my regular Tau opponent no end Maybe add it to my list of potential Great Marine Swaps

@Lord Kaesar II, Artsoldier35: I don't know *why* it seems silly - I mean - you don't expect them to actually function as intended do you Orks are all about style over substance - well, for an Orky definition of style anyway... I'm sure its just as bumpy, if not more so

@Artsoldier35: Well, I hope you mean the front ones - as all the rear ones are now metal - not that you can see them easily... I still have the plastic rear ones, so its still a possibility for the "twin". I had given thought this morning to adding a flying stand to support it. I can always leave it bare for you - or just leave the hole. Its still early days at this point. Obviously this was the picture I should have shown you first - the excitement level in your posts appears to have dropped!

Lol you don't drop in a few days (budget meetings - gotta love'em) and Arakasi is building a trukk with a working suspension; do the wheels turn if you mess around with the steering wheel as well?

I really like the look of a trukk, and if balance is an issue, try to get hold of some lead fishing weights; they're small, heavy, and can be hammered into a different shape - perfect for filling the hollow bits of the wheel.

@CommissarKhaine: There's an easy solution to that But no, neither the suspension or the steering works. In fact - there is no steering mechanism in place yet! Which reminds me, I removed the steering bar - I still need to determine whether or if I can put that back, create something new, or just have it work on Ork power! I'll keep the fishing weights idea in mind - thanks!

I am starting to feel that I may have reached my limits with the Ork Trukk kit after this though. I now have dangerous visions of scratch-building in the future... (I believe this occurs when the kit starts getting in the way more than helping...)

@Artsoldier35: Thanks for the comparison pics - they are a lot larger than I had envisioned! Must put equivalent (or more!) effort into Trukk!

@whalemusic360: And most likely the coolest you will see in this blog! I don't think I could bring myself to make one that large, let alone top it!

The only thing about it I'm not happy with is the main gun. Kind of plain. Oh well, I'm really ahppy with the Front forks which are made from Q-tip stems and paint brush protectors.
