I wasn't thinking of roks no. More a quick, very random, very orky form of battlefield deployment (potentially lethal to the occupants; certainly lethal to anyone it lands on) by literally flinging a container full of orks/gretchin across the battlefield

For your viewing pleasure (*again*) - Nob with slugga, choppa and 'eavy armour (note the cool shield across the back!). The last of the Nobz put together and painted by endtransmission for my birthday this year. Base by me (WIP).

What's going on here? My blog has been taken over by discussion on Orky drop pods?

I was planning a mekaniak and grotz emulating a techmarine and servitors (tho not in the near future), but I hadn't considered drop pods... Obviously there is a lot of room to go with this, so, without committing to anything, I'll just add a few of my own thoughts to the mix:

  • Scenery/objective - do up a crashed Ork drop pod and use it for scenery or as an Orky objective (recuvva da black box to find out wot went wrong?)

  • Scenery - a bit o cuvva for da boyz in da Ork deployment zone. Ok, so it crashed "before" the battle proper, but is still useful and characterful.

  • House rulez - take as a transport option (carry 12 models - mega-armour counts as 2), gives unit deep strike, automatically scatters 2d6 - this is the impact spot. Counts as ramming whatever it lands on (s10 hit on itself and the target, use "back" armour) or the ground (s8 hit on itself). Roll for scatter. On a hit, and assuming it impacted on the ground, it is embedded there. Otherwise scatter a further 2d6 for roll/bounce and treat any impact as a ramming action. How many points? Would it need its own destruction table?

where am I? *looks around* Well i'm...errr...I...I...don't know!

Sounds sutiably Orky, sorry about the Drop Pod disscussion!

I would think that It would need to be about 100 pts as it could be quite destructive, it could also backfire horribly!! I would suggest ussing it in Planetstrike as your own Ork Strategem> Just an idea!!

Sorry about the drop pod hijack, your blog has been taken over by grots in the gubbins!

I really would only use ther orky drop pod in friendly games or when using house rules and I would make the cost about 30 points more than the space marine one just to ensure your opponent doesn't moan! Also an orky destruction table would be good, you could have it on a 6 go KABOOM! and cause massive damage, check this with opponents though because they might think your trying to milk your own rules.

That nob looks really cool, I like the sheild on the back, stolen I presume? Keep up the good work and the idea of an ork/techmarine really sounds cool, remember loads of arms with big guns/stuff O_o on it!

No apologies necessary - its a great idea, and fits in with the theme - just not something I'm planning on working on at the moment. My first goal is 500pts so I can start playing already! I will add it to the list for later however...

I agree - as an actual drop pod it would only be for friendly games that had agreed to it beforehand. As a piece of scenery I think it would work more universally, if less chaoticly. If I set up the infiltrating Kommandos in it would even look like they deployed from it... The other idea is to base a scenario around it. I'm sure endtransmission and I can come to some sort of arrangement...

Keep up the good work guys - I appreciate it! (I'll try to keep the tongue-in-cheek indignation to a minimum from now on...)

Just stick the undercarriage of a trukk onto one side of a drop pod. Use it as a transport.

Shoota boy (WIP). There is a Van Saar miniature that I like the pose of, and this is my first attempt at it with Orks. I had bought more tools so I could start doing minor conversions. The shoota has been sawn off at the wrist and rotated to point straight up. Unfortunately, he doesn't quite pull the pose off - he holds the shoota up too far (should be down by his side) and the slugga should be held straight out at arms length.

I've started drilling out the gun barrels - but I don't have my drill yet. I've found using the end of the circular file, followed by the end of the triangular file, works a treat. Good thing too - as I still prefer to clean the miniatures with a blade rather than the files - which means they at least get some use...

Here he has been base coated in black and had his armour and skin painted Dark Angels green - makes him look like a toy soldier. Using the same base coat for the armour and skin makes for a fairy quick start to the miniature - and no concerns of splashing across areas. This was taken a week ago - he now has red bits picked out in Mechrite red (gunz, shoota arm bandage).

I've worked out a preliminary 500pt force to work towards:

  • HQ - Warboss - twin-linked shoota, power klaw, stikkbombz, 'eavy armour, bosspole (100pts) - This is based on my existing Warboss. He doesn't have a bosspole, so I'll do up a grot servant to carry it for him.

  • Troops - Da Deffwingz - 3 x Meganobz - mega armour, stikkbombz (120pts)

  • Troops - Taktikal Mob - 10 x Boyz - shootas, 1 x rokkit launcha (70pts)

  • Fast Attack - Da Rav'nwingz - 3 x Warbikers - choppa, warbike, slugga, dakkagun (75pts)

  • Fast Attack - Da Rav'nwingz - Deffkopta - choppa, twin-linked rokkit launcha (45pts)

  • Heavy Support - Deff Dread - 2 x dreadnought close combat weapons, rockkit launcha, scorcha (90pts)

  • Da Warboss will probably lead Da Taktikal mob, but he can also lead Da Deffwingz.

Looks good acctally, I think I know the pose you were trying to get but this one is acctually really cool! Looks like he wants to go clobber someone with his slugga ^_^. Maybie put as a tattoo, It's Clobberin Time! On his shoulder or something mind you then he'd have to be orange O_o

Another WIP slugga boy - this time my first attempt at John Woo style. As per the Van Saar imitation shown previously, the bent Ork arms don't really do the pose justice (needs to be straight armed). I believe the Ork arms were designed to be cut at the wrists - it opens up a lot of options! (Not necessarily all good ones...)

For a treat - a real WIP (ie not the best photograph due to lighting, only one angle...) - what I worked on this weekend...

The new (okay, they aren't *new* anymore - but I used to have the ones with the guns that stood out like sore thumbs before) warbikes are awesome, if time consuming to put together. I've been wanting to get this one together to try out Da Rav'nwingz paint scheme. The model is on an angle - glued to the base by the back wheel, ammo drum and exhaust, causing the front wheel to be elevated. The main (simple) mod is the left arm - the chainsaw arm has been cut at the wrist and rotated to look like he is about to kneecap someone. (The angle of the bike and the direction of the face is supposed to give the effect of him leaning into it) I'm very happy with how this model/pose turned out.

His partner is my second attempt at the Van Saar pose - this time a 'ard boy shoota. Using the shoota with the stock looks less "wrong" than the previous shoota boy - but its still too elevated. I think I am going to have to make some major modifications on my third attempt and finally break out the GS. The slugga is also better but not perfect - it has been attached to the straighter but still slightly bent chainsaw arm (again, cut at the wrist). I am going to have to use a straight Nobz arm, or again, some serious modifications and GS...

Really nice stuff you have here.
Without being negative, but the SM backpacks dont fully add up. On a SM its attached to the power armour, how is it attached to the orc? A leather or chain strap like a jump pack might work? Or could it be a maddoc bionic thing?

Another dual wielding slugga boy (WIP) and one I am happier with the pose. Once again, cut at wrists and rotate.

With regards to the SM backpacks - they could be strapped on from underneath. Somehow I don't see Orks lining up for a backpack as a bionic implant (but then again, who says they had a choice?) - except maybe as a power source for something else... I may try some straps and/or chains in the future, or maybe even as part of some broken SM armour... The possibilities are endless - I'll just slowly work my way up as my modelling and customisation improves. Its not like I'll have a lack of boyz to try out on!

You will notice that a lot of my boyz have swords that realistically aren't being held in place by anything - the one above is a case in point... I will bite the bullet and try some GS work soon I promise!

A simple belt made from GS would be a good first step if you never done it before. Honestly, i have never used epoxy, but whatwhat and some other DakkaDakka users have posted some good guides on simple stuff.
As far as im aware, you just wait for the putty to harden a little, make a sheet and cut the shape you want and bend it onto the model. Buckles etc added on or etched. It will certainly make the models more unique, which IMO is a good thing
Anyhow, keep up the good work, i look forward to seeing how these progress.

These guys are really impressive, and somehow just seem to fit your theme without being either "too human" or "too ork".

    Fantastic work so far

In relation to the drop pods, before I moved house I was working on a drop gargant for my (going-to-be all drop Ork army). It would drop onto the table and my orks would stagger out of it while it shot things.

I think in the trial rules it had it only had a 1/6 chance of landing without a problem, working all the way up to gigantic explosion (in a woryingly small number of steps ).

Anyway, your army looks great so far, and I can't wait to see more

The aim is, up close (ie opponent, hangers on) it is easily identifiable as orks. Specifically, everything should be identifiable as orky - albeit with DA "insparashun". However, from across the room it should look like a very wrong DA army. Either way - if it makes people look twice it will have met one of my goals. Exclamations of "cool" or "awesome" are just a bonus

Just a thought, if it's going to look like a wrong DA army from the other side of the room then maybie give some orks the tops of SM helmets as hats? Would look cool and add to the sneaky aspect, could have scooped the gubbins and brains out and made an orky helmet out of it ^_^

I have to get myself a load of SM bits, specifically DA bits at some point. Im planning a large 'ard boyz mob eventually - so will have plenty of opportunity to mix in all the different pieces of looted SM gear. As well as the warbikes... Oh, and termi bits for the Meganobz... Too many ideas!

This may be hardtodo but buy the DA veterans box and then create an ork wearing a DA cloak as that will look like they really are imitating them completely! just a thought!

I definately think I will need to work my way up to sculpting cloaks on the boyz... Above is my first (ever) attempt with GS and it is most definately a work in progress! Oh - and when the helpful articles say you will mix up more than you need - they are absolutely right! I think I need some vaseline or oil and a *lot* more patience. Water just doesn't seem to cut it...

The WIP above is my final (promise!) attempt at the Van Saar pose I like. Unlike the previous two attempts I think this is a lot closer - I am actually quite happy with it. It certainly is the most complicated conversion I have done so far - especially as the boyz just don't seem to be made to be modelled in this pose! The straight arm is the twin linked shoota nob arm from the boyz box - the twin linked shoota removed at the wrist and replaced with a normal slugga (plus a notch for the scope). This arm doesn't come straight out though - more like a 45 degree angle, so my idea was to slice the end such that the piece I sliced off I could flip over to fill the gap on the other side. Unfortunately I didn't manage to do this exactly in half, which left a gap to be filled. My first attempt with GS was abysmal - I ended up plugging the gap with a spare piece of plastic before having a second go.

Getting the head placement was also difficult - between most of the ork heads being too bulky on the right side to swivel too far and all (!) of the torsos being higher on the right than the left. I can't wait until I get the Nobz box - it looks like it has a couple of left straight arms which should make this a lot easier (did I say this would be my last attempt?) In the end I went with the biker torso as this seemed to work out the best.

The left arm is cut diagonally at the elbow. Originally I was just going to swivel it, but the gun ended up in the wrong position. Instead I've ended up gluing the top of the lower arm to the stub left from the top arm. This definately doesn't look right, so GS to the rescue. Ok well, maybe not to the rescue yet - this is a WIP! I have a plan to do a number of shoota boyz in a firing squad pose, so this is good practice for refiguring ork arms. Though to be honest, if it ends up too fiddly I might take a leaf out of my mate's casting experience and just see if I can cast them (once I actually manage to do one I am happy with...)

I haven't quite decided whether to make this a kommando, shoota boy or 'ard boy. I think the biker boy torso works well for a kommando, but of course, kommandos aren't technically armed with shootas - though a large blade, axe or chainsaw on the shoota may make it more "choppa"ish. Also, I don't know how to kit him up as much as the kommando models - especially as I really don't want to obscure the large skull on the back of his jacket. I already have a shoota boy and 'ard boy attempt at this pose. As a 'ard boy though, I can cover up much of my GS issues with armour if need be

Does the right arm look too long or just right?

Not OT. Warning - I just don't like lootas. I don't know if its the inability to move and fire or just the models - whenever I see units of them, the gun rig just looks wrong to me, perhaps too consistent? *If* I did any, that gun rig would be the first thing to go... Instead, I'll eventually have tankbustas filling the devastator role....

Have a read through my thread. People have offeres a few different tips. The best tool you can get is a little sculpting brush from Hobbycraft (ground floor, far end with the paintbrushes). It looks like a paintbrush, but has a little rubber nib instead. The green stuff doesn't stick to it, so it's much easier to work with. If everything pans out, you can have a go with mine tomorrow
