I don't know if you like sculpting things, but this little tutorial contains some nice tips for a starting sculpter. It's a bit more in depth then just green stuffing for conversion but I found it gave a useful tip or two.So if you'd like to give it a look here it is:

Another WIP shoota boy - 'nuff said.

endtransmission wrote:Have a read through my thread. People have offeres a few different tips. The best tool you can get is a little sculpting brush from Hobbycraft (ground floor, far end with the paintbrushes). It looks like a paintbrush, but has a little rubber nib instead. The green stuff doesn't stick to it, so it's much easier to work with. If everything pans out, you can have a go with mine tomorrow

I will have to get myself one of those! (and more practice)

I think I will like to sculpt things - just need to build up slowly. Figured I would start by filling some gaps, then move up to small details (straps and the like) before I try anything too fancy. Never fear - it will all be here - eventually... Thanks for the link, it looks very helpful.

Today a Deff Dread, Meganob and some grotz came in the mail ('bout time!). I've realised that I actually am not far from having all of the miniatures for my 500pt force - just need two more Meganobz and a deathkopta (which I will get as part of AOBR eventually, though not for at least a month and not that I will have everything put together and painted by then either). On further consideration, I have decided to attempt to magnetise the deff dread and meganob for maximum bang for my buck (or shoud I say pound?)

You should indeed say pound

And looking good so far, certainly better than my first attempts at GS. The good thing is that you can just peel it off once it is set if you don't like it, so at least you are not ruining the plastic underneath.

Think this army will look fantastic when it is painted up. Can't wait.

My (current) favourite pose - ok, perhaps behind the warbiker! I have this guy set as a Kommando - though his kit out obviously isn't - two shootas anyone? He just *looks* like a Kommando - to me anyway... Probably look better with more than an undercoat though...

Apologies for lack of posts - photo conditions have been terrible, other life issues have been distracting and this week I've been ill to top it all off... So now I am recovering, and there was a bit of sun (though still not perfect) I took the opportunity to photograph some WIP. In the interests of satisfying the crowd, I've put up a painting WIP and will leave some of the new models (ok, two of them) for later...

So above is the warbiker from before (obvious, I know). I don't think he is really going to come to life until the metal and black highlights are done. As my previous models pretty much involved a wash of badab black everywhere, I've decided this time around to block in all of the base colours first so that I can just apply a wash to the whole model in one go. The red on the dakkagun still needs to be tidied up and the metal needs to be applied first though.

The model is still very black which I'm not 100% certain about (it is supposed to be mimicing Ravenwing afterall). I am planning to do the ammo drum in red too, and perhaps even the cannister thing in the centre on the back - not sure yet whether that will be too much or too little. Metal will be applied to the plates on the front wheel, the front struts and exhaust (though not the joins) as well as the bolts and studs (and the dakkagun of course). Again - walking a fine line between too much and too little.

I will also take a break from my "perfect" orks and try my hand at chips, maybe some dirt spatters and rust. Possibly I should be trying that one one of my boyz first though

Thoughts welcome. I guess I'll start with less and build up more depending on how it looks - multiple washes or not.

Maybie add some bleached bone? That would fit in really well with the ravenwing idea!

Thanks - I'd forgotten to mention that in my post! The tusks on the front wheel guard, tusks on the handlebars, handlebar grip, bandages/cloth on the ork wrist and hair as well as the skull there will all be highlighted up through bleached bone and white (currently done in foundation brown). There are a couple of glyphs on the bike that I will do in white as well, not to mention white unit tattoos. If that's not enough, the ork back actually has a nice plate I can put a symbol on too.

Here we have Kommando 1 WIP (formerly Slugga boy 4). I've decided to have a first go at the Kommando scheme - here imitating DA SM Scouts directly with DA green top, white bottom and black boots. Base colours are in place, just awaiting first wash of badab black before building up the highlights. No sniper rifles, leafed cloaks or anything else yet - want to get the base colour scheme down and be happy with it before I go to that much trouble!

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm glad people are finding this interesting. I must admit I don't really like putting up WIP painting, but then if I don't it is hard to get feedback at a point where it can make a difference I only hope the end force ends up as cool as the idea!

Side note: Cleaned up a Meganob this morning, though I haven't put him together yet. This is the first metal miniature I have cleaned up in 10 years - and suddenly the files actually came in handy! You won't see him for a while though - I am playing with the idea of magnetising him so that I can swap armaments, perhaps even going so far as to be able to detach the one shot rokkit, though I'm not sure how to handle the one shot skorchas... ideas welcome (as always)

Cool idea, looking forward to seeing more stuff. One criticism however is that I think your boss is a tad small, perfect for a nob however.

Skarag Mekslag strode through the boyz camp, tattered white robes flowing out behind him, seemingly oblivious to the weight of the kustom force field generator strapped to his back. He tried to recall why he was here. Warboss Morgrim "Da Lion" Grimork had sent him on ahead with a small contingent - but why? Skarag unconsciously fiddled with the knobs and dials on his burna - simultaneously helping his mind to focus and causing da boyz to give him a wide berth. Allies. Pinkskins. His concentration wavered as conflicting emotions and memories flooded his ork mind. Protect. Destroy. Protect. Destroy. A wayward grot crossed his path, interrupting the confusion and allowing him to focus once more. With a single thought, one of his tentacled servo arms lashed out, removing the grot from his sight, and indeed, the near vicinity. Trade. Weapons. Armour. Loot. Protect, then destroy!

Mind cleared, Skarag surveyed the small warband under his command. Quickly satisfying himself that all da boyz were accounted for, he made his way over to the trukks and deffkoptas and set about making a few last minute adjustments. Two ork arms and four servo arms went to work in a blur of flesh, cables and steel. The confusion Skarag had experienced became a distant memory. It was times like these when Skarag recalled a much simpler existence - before Grimskab Badwort the pain boy had started administering gin seed or progoid lands or some such to da inna circul...

Right - first off, apologies for the lack of updates. I've recently moved to Scotland, but am still working in London, and have only now started to get things back in any semblance of order...

In an effort to speed up our army construction (and just for the fun of it), endtransmission and I have decided to enter the doubles tournament in January 2010. Below is my contingent. You can see his on his blog or the combined list is in the army list section for comment.

Skarag Mekslag (Big Mek) w. Kustom Force Field, Burna, Boss Pole : 110pts
12 Ork Boyz w. Nob (Power Klaw, Boss pole), Trukk (Boarding plank, armour plates) : 162pts
11 Ork Boyz w. Trukk (armoured plates) : 111pts
2 Deff Koptas both w. Twin linked rokkits, one w. buzzsaw : 115pts

Total: 498pts

Red - Parts ordered
Orange - Unit built, needs paint
Green - Complete

Some of my other WIP will go on hold for the moment while I get this lot sorted. Oh - and picture updates will hopefully occur on Wednesdays - as the only good light setup I will now have is my weekly trek to endtransmission's...

We have put in a large order for the bits we both collectively need - and I hope to take possession of my bits next Tuesday...

The focal point of my force is going to be Skarag Mekslag, the Big Mek. Hopefully you can start to get the idea of where I am going from the fluff above. I've ordered the burnas/lootas box set, nobz box set, the Big Mek with kustom force field, Dark Angels veterans and a techmarine to get all the bitz I think i will need. I've seen a great techmarine conversion with Doc Ock like tentacled servo arms that I hope to mimic - attached directly to the kustom force field rather than the servo harness - model willing.

I haven't quite decided if the boyz mobs will be both shootas or one each of shootas and sluggas and choppas. I have decided I will be adding more Dark Angels bits to da boyz however. I want to try distinguishing the units by pose as well - which includes at least one shoota boyz mob in "firing squad" formation. Luckily during the move I discovered another pack of green stuff I had previously ordered...

I now finally have a use for my Forge World ork trukks I picked up at Games Day. I've picked up a rhino to cut up and distribute between 2-3 trukks... Starting to wonder whether I should have got a landspeeder to cut up and add to da deffkoptas...

So - hopefully great things ahead - I promise to keep you posted and updated!

Having seen the size of the warbosses now, I have to agree. I will leave him as a nob, but will use him as inpiration later for a warboss... or perhaps even Skarag...

Hello again! Apologies for the lack of updates (again!) Its mostly been about photography - but I have bitten the bullet and just gone with horrible iPhone photos - I need input, ideas etc and I just can't get that without posting something (apparently...)

So our order arrived, we missed out on getting a place in the doubles tournament - but we shall not let that deter us from finishing this army! However, a number of things have changed. Firstly, due to the nature of getting a force ready in a tight schedule (even if the schedule no longer technically exists) - I have done what I had not originally planned to - which is bought *alot* of Orks prior to finishing the ones I have already. This has also led to my new philosophy - which is that I no longer need "practice" and I will make this army "exactly" how I want it. There will be a greater focus (initially) on modelling and conversions. I will eventually get to the painting - be patient!

So without further ado - some of my poor iPhone photos of what I have been up to (I created a whole new photo gallery for them so that they wouldn't taint the others)

My work space - before it got saturated with Ork body parts...

Big Mek - version one. I converted the burna to be left handed, and plan to replace some of the servo arm attachments with runtherd bitz. However this pose was short lived as I felt it was not dynamic enough...

This is the new pose, from the front. He is missing his servo harness, the marine corpse is incomplete and the burna will either have half a fuel drum added to it or its fuel hose put back - which ever looks better. It may not be clear from the horrible photo - but the marine corpse head is a skull. I plan to do the marine body as if recently scorched - so blackened armour and I'll build the skull up first in white, then red (for flesh) and then black (for burnt flesh)

The back - where you might be able to make out the minor conversion to the Kustom Force Field, giving it a more 3D finish. You will also note the robes - he is a Da Ork Angel after all. The boss pole and servo harness arms will be attached to the Kustom Force Field (counts as Mek Tools).

And a side view, showing off the robes again as well as the handle on the burna. He will require a lot of green stuff at the torso/legs joint - which actually quite nicely gives him some more height (makes him on par with the AOBR warboss) - as well as completing the robes. The robes are Dark Angels veteran robes, cut in two and with the space marine legs removed - fun I can tell you. Hopefully it is obvious here that he is striding forward - with the KFF angled forward and slightly to the left.

If you can imagine it, he will be painted like a Dark Angels Techmarine - red clothes and armour, white robes, dark green weapon and shoulder pad. I will probably paint the marine corpse as a Dark Angel too, just to get more dark green in the mix to match the rest of the army.

And here is a converted AOBR ork shoota boy, in firing squad formation

Comments welcome! (except drop pods - you know who you are!)
