I've had a few over the years, a Fender Tele, an Epiphone Flying V, assorted Squier Strats - nothing flash really.
At the moment I'm not playing guitar in my band, just vocals, but I have a Yamaha APX-500 for writing songs on. Again, it's nothing flash - just a sturdy, servicable workhorse of an electro-acoustic guitar. When I bought it I was playing on the open-mic circuit a lot and wanted something fairly cheap and cheerful in case it got nicked or damaged. It suits my needs.
I also have a 12-string and another Yamaha 6-string.
My pride and joy however, is my Tama Rockstar kit:
Never get to play it much these days...
Please note: These are not ACTUAL pictures of MY instruments
Samus_aran115 wrote:How much does a set like that go for, without cymbals?
Oof! I bought it 7 years ago! The ol' brain ain't what it used to be...
IIRC, I spent about 850-900GBP on the kit itself. The hi-hats (UFIP - proper fething gucci!) cost me around 200 just on their own! I got Protection Racket cases for all my stuff - they're all kinds of awesome (sheepskin interior, neoprene padding) and all kinds of expensive. Also, I swapped out my snare for a Chad Smith custom thingy - not that I think he's great or anything, it was just huge! That was another 200, plus I added a crash, crash/ride and ride (by Paiste). All told I spent about 2K. I'm not rich - I had to get a loan.
I saw it as an investment, which to a certain extent it is - I'll never have to buy another kit, in all probability.
Epiphone Les Paul Black Beauty. Got it about 10 years ago, and the quality of the body on it puts the current "true" Gibson Les Paul bodies to shame. Weighs a metric ton though.
But my true love - Access Virus TI
Sexiest damn VA synth on the market.
Fender Jazzmaster (black, player model), my go-to guitar
Fender Jaguar sunburst standard
Fender Stratocaster (Billy Corgan model, white). I hate the sound of almost all strats, but the dimarzio pickups on this are amazing and it has a great sound
Ibanez RG-something (7 string, black, the budget version)
Epiphone custom SG (cream and gold)
Yamaha pacifica (wood effect)
Amps are some budget marshal offshoot and a mesa boogie express 550 (I think that is the number, too lazy to check)
Also have a yamaha something keyboard, Hohner jazz bass and a cheapo violin

:O Wow, money bags!
Not really, I've been playing for about 15 years now so that is a lot of birthdays/xmases/gradual upgrades.
As you can see, I am ready to rock at a moments notice.
I never took guitar, I was a drummer and pianist. Though I haven't had the chance to do either in years; got caught up in school and living in places that wouldn't allow kits.
What are you trying to play? Whatever you do, don't buy some sort of 'First act' thing.
I've got a fender Starcaster. It came with an amp, but It was complete , so I took it apart and use it as a foot stool. I bought a behringer amp (pretty small, nice grunge sound)
I hate my guitar though. It has terrible feedback and the neck and middle pickups are completely worthless. I'm considering going the eddie van halen approach, putting a nice Humbucker in there and ripping the other two out. The body is great, and the neck is a dream, the bridge is okay (Die cast metals suck. I'll probably just put in a standard fender bridge).
But anyway. For the money I'd be spending on making this one better, I might as well buy a MIM strat!
I've got a cheap-o black Fender CD-60 acoustic that I bought just to have with me when I'm overseas, and I've got my pride and joy:
Epiphone '66 SG Limited Edition reissue. That silverburst sure is awful purrdy!
Golden Eyed Scout wrote:What would you guys recommend for a beginner guitar? That is preferably dirt cheap.
You can pick up a Squier Strat for dirt cheap and they are pretty solid for a beginner. Alternatively, any sort of Epiphone Les Paul or SG would suit your needs - although they are a touch more expensive. What's your budget?
Ges: You'd probably like an Ibanez....Most of them are 'dirt-cheap', I suppose. Some of them are in the low 200's although I have no idea how good they are.
Personally, I find ibanez guitars to be rather ugly, harsh and jagged, but I guess some people like that.

About a hundred bucks. I'll (hopefully) be getting a job soon, so the budget will increase, but for now, that is about as much as I'd be willing to drop.
I have a Agile Hornet...pretty good quality and a nice price as well.
Not to mention it looks fantastic.
If you're looking for a cheap and decent quality electric guitar, Rondo Music has a nice selection. That's where I got my Hornet. I'm pretty sure they have acoustics as well.
If you just want to learn how to play, I guess you can get something from walmart.....I wouldn't, but for a hundred bucks, I think you can get something.
Electrics starting at $69. There's a bunch in the $100 range as well. Remember, you're getting what you pay for, but as far as cheap guitars go, they're relatively good quality. But don't expect them to sound like a Jem or anything.
Edit: Out of all of them, this one is probably the best that's in your range. My friend bought one and it's actually a really nice guitar, especially for the price. http://www.rondomusic.com/SR1STDBK.html

I had to go to WalMart last weekend. And I had been able to keep form going in there for almost two years.
Maybe Target has one. I'll check, but until I have a job, garage sales and pawn shps will prolly be my best friends for now.

Also, just to mention, if you want to play some of the songs you linked, you're going to need a guitar with Humbuckers. I'd reccomend a distortion pedal as well.
Ibanez AEB10. Just picked it up as something to play with friend informally since I'm not playing gigs anymore, not that it hasn't made an appearance at a coffee house or two.

The game Brutal Legend got me to want to play the guitar, and I asked my parents for one for christmas, but they got me Accoustic
"Playing Accoustic is totally lame and not Metal!"
Noo,so untrue...I spend quite a fair amount of time banging out various "metal tunes" on my acoustic,remember..if you can play it on an acoustic it will sound even better when your plugged in,distorted and have the volume up to 11.
I learnt to play on a cheap Fender acoustic then bought a Yamaha Pacifica. Cheap as chips but sturdy and nice to play. Mine is so old now it has a quality tone despite being economy and battered. I mostly play my SG standard however, because it is sexual.
um 1 fender squire (horrible guitar) 1 cheap ass ibanez (ok guitar) and a 1985 bc rich virgin (when BC rich was still made in japan and didnt suck) I do however have a niceish line 6 amp (100watts) that is prolly the best bit of music kit ive ever bought does everything from uber death metal to blues and funk
How did I miss this thread? I always take any given opportunity to talk about my somewhat odd selection of guitars.
My main guitar is this:
I put it together myself from parts. The neck is easily the best I've ever played, it's made entirely from Pau Ferro which is normally only used for fretboards and it completely raw (ie no finish).
The rest: Steinberger Spirit, Epiphone G400, Marlin Sidewinder and at the bottom modded lapsteel.
I only have one amp worth mentioning a WEM ER40 head running though a 1x12" H/H cab. The WEM dates to somewhere between the late 60s and mid 70s. Oddly for that era it's a transistor amplifier although for WEM being odd is par for the course. After all this is the company that produced effects pedals with an output cable and not the industry standard output socket. Still oddity aside it's a perfectly capable amp with a very handy treble boost feature.
My girlfriend has a hell old and rather valuable Gibson Les Paul Standard - that's her favourite. Mine is the 7-string Ibanez RG Prestige. I play keyboards though.
OTher wise I play acoustic. I honestly dont own my own oddly enough. I play on an old ass one my mother has had since before she gave birth to us Its showing wear finally, but it still can sound decent with some new strings
My favorites are a JPB 'Artist' series electric accoustic bass named 'Devin' and a '67 Fender Jazz named 'Jazzabel' (long story behind how I got that). My Favorite 6 string guitars are just a plain old strat named 'Lulubelle' white with stripes of spraypaint, and a black Ibanez RGX named 'Wicked', and a Steinberger Synapse named 'Emily' that I got for 18 bucks (she never EVER goes out of tune). The rest of them are pawn shop cheapos though.
I currently own a Washburn acoustic, a Mitchell acoustic 12-string, a BC Rich Warlock, and a Fernandes Strat copy. I used to have an Epiphone Strat copy and a Squier Stratocaster.
Was up on Denmark street yesterday and picked up an all black Jaguar player HH to add to the collection as well now Neck is not as nice as the player jazzmaster, but it is a very nice sounding guitar that fills the roles of jaguar and strat at the same time.
The Dreadnote wrote:I have a bass called a Tokai Hard Puncher. I put a piece of masking tape over "hard" and wrote "face" on it. It is now 1000% more awesome.
I have been playing guitar for 17 years and only own 1 guitar at the moment. A Fender telecaster(mexican). I am wanting a deluxe Strat, with an ash body and maple neck. Love the chunky #2 pickup position.
I have never been one of those that collect many guitars so I generally try to keep my collection at around 1 or 2 electric... with an acoustic for emergencies.
A lot of my musician friends have rooms full of guitars and gear. I have just never been one to collect guitars. I guess I feel that I only really "need" a few, and the others basically become dust collectors.
Yeah some of them do definitely become dust collectors, but it's nice to have backup if you are in the middle of doing something and you bust a string. I hate restringing a guitar midway through recording something, and for stage, it's an absolute necessity because the show must go on. Mostly they just collect dust, all but my primary guitar and bass. But it sure is nice to have the backup girls around because you always break a string or short out at the least opportune moment.
Until recently I also had a Fender electric XII and a Fender Starcaster (the vintage variety not the recent low cost fender starter strat-type guitar) but I had to sell them to pay some bills...

How are those original starcasters? I personally have the newer one, just wondering
Counting mine and my brothers since we had a community pool. These are just ownes we've owned, not ones we still own. The partial list of waht comes to mind:
John Petrucci Music Man Signature 59 Les Paul - dark cherry finish, super sweet Various Les Paul/Strat clones Comanche with Z pickups, can't remember more about it Oldskool Ovation Martin acoustic, supposedly stolen from Eric Clapton at the air port and backed up by the serial number being promotional and not recognized but grain of salt nonetheless
DeArmond basses, before they were bought out. Had a few 4 and 5 strings. Warwick 5 string, whatever their main line is Hohner 5 string (my favorite of all that I had, but it got stolen) Fretless one at some point. Really can't remember much about it.
My biggest rig was a Carvin cab and SWR head with both tube and Solid State settings. TONS of EQ and frequency filtering options on there, I remember I could make it sound like anything.
That's what sticks out but there was so much more.
Edit: For what it's workth I've got a 70's model Kasino bass amp (very early solid state so it's massive) and a California strat clone that's had the hell modded out of it. I got both off Craigslist and actually bartered harmonica lessons for the former My bro has something with humbuckers that I can't recall and a fairly large Orange amp.

It was the most easy to play guitar I have ever owned (great low action) and a great tone. Mine looked exactly like this:
I regretted selling it minutes after I did so...
I heard thru the grapevine that the guy from Radiohead ended up buying it from the collector I sold it to, but I can't confirm that...
Ebony Fretboard
EMG 81/85's
Satin Neck
Beautiful Finish
Weighs as much as a tissue box
aka, my ideal guitar.
My next purchase will probably be
An Agile Interceptor Pro 625. Sure it's got a similar finish, and the same pickups, but it has a tremolo and looks awesome! I'll probably invest in some Seymour Duncan Blackouts and put them one either the Epi or the Agile just for some variety.
If you couldn't tell, my favorite color on guitars is black and black.
Bass guitars for me. I have some crappy basses I picked up from various pawn shops and whatnot, but the one I'm really proud to own is my Ibanez SR5006E Prestige. I ing love Ibanez though, the necks are a dream to play. I'll get some pics up soon, two of my basses are covered in stickers and have sharpie writing all over.
Didn't get on with guitars, I lost my pick even when playing air guitar but I am a minority in the UK in that I play the Harmonica.
I have 3 Hohners Special 20's in A, C and F and a Seydel Favourite which has a lovely tone.
I was also bought a chromatic chrometta 8 last Christmas which I really don't get on with at all but feel disrespectful if I bin it or throw it at someone.
Anyway, back to the thread, no I don't have a guitar.
LTD KH-602, couldn't bring myself to shell out almost $3,000 to get the ESP equivalent. EMG-85's in the two pick up positions. Couldn't be happier with it.
I've a Takemenie Acoustic, a Fender Squire Stratocaster and an Ibanez Gio, plugged to a Fender Frontman Amp. I'm going to the Electric guitars because I don't play electric anymore.
Automatically Appended Next Post: What i would love, however are these two models:
The Martin 000-28EC Eric Clapton Signature Acoustic Guitar
And the Martin Jorma Kaukonen Signature Acoustic Guitar

Looks like you could snap that headstock right off....
Nah, it's very solid and very high quality. It's one of the razorbacks by Dean. Zack Wylde owns one and even he swears by the quality. They sound amazing with distortion and the clean settings are some of the best I've heard. It's $2k guitar quality for only around $1k.
What would a good starter guitar be? Something that will last awhile and put up with starter errors while soundng good (or good enough) without being a $2000 piece of gear.
When I was learning (well, trying to, don't have the dexterity) I had one of these and it served me well. One of my other friends bought the same guitar about 4 years ago, and hasn't had any problems since then; with basic maintenance anyway.
I've also heard good things about this, though its more expensive than the first.
I have to second Dogmas friends recommendation concerning Epiphone Guitars.
The one my Missus purchased for me (pictured a page or two back),is quite nice, has a full rich sound, very sturdy construction and cost her under $200 dollars for both the Guitar and a small Peavy practice amp.
As a "veteran" Bass player making the "leap" to a six string,I can highly recommend it both for quality and price.
Ahtman wrote:What would a good starter guitar be? Something that will last awhile and put up with starter errors while soundng good (or good enough) without being a $2000 piece of gear.
I would echo the sentiments regarding Epiphone guitars. They really are excellent for the money. IMO, they are a good second guitar. If you're an absolute beginner though, you can't really go wrong with a decent Squier Stratocaster. They're the budget line of Fender, and are perfectly serviceable guitars.
I'd emphasize albatross' emphasis on squires. When you finally get rid of them, people snatch them up for the bridges
Good guitars though. Much more 'options' and such things on them. Having adjustable saddles, a tremolo and three pickups will put you ahead of the epiphone crowd. Personally, I wouldn't buy a squire, I would just trade up for a MIM strat.
