I've been debating with myself for while whether or not it would be a good idea to post this - it's shameless self-promotion, and I'm opening myself up to some pretty easy jabs...
...But what the hell!
For the past...forever ( ), my band Dresden has been working on a debut album. We've recorded, produced and mastered it all ourselves, and have decided to release it directly, rather than undergo what might be an ultimately futile attempt to get a record company to release it for us. Instead of printing up a load of CDs and trying to flog them at gigs, we've taken a slightly different approach - we're releasing it only as a download. As costs are kept very low by doing it this way, we thought the fairest thing to do would be to simply give it away. The amounts we would have made by selling a physical product would have been negligable, and we hope that we might be able to create a little bit of goodwill (and therefore support) by just making it free.
To download, simply click 'Buy now' and set the amount to '0' (or you could donate some money if you REALLY want to - there is absolutely no obligation to do so at all) and select the format you would like to download.
Simple!
Let me know what you think - all feed back is welcome, either in this thread or via PM. Also, if you like it you may want to swing by our facebook group and join up. Just athought. And if you don't? Well, maybe you know someone who might - get them to check it out! It'd be a great help and much appreciated.
DISCLAIMER: This is NOT a metal album! It's sort of melodic electronic indie/pop. If you like metal and ONLY metal, there's a good chance you will hate my album. I only put this here with the intention of avoiding 'NEEDS MOAR VIKINGS!'-type posts! [b]
It kept popping up as having an error, I am going to have to wait until tomorrow to see if it sorts itself out. My internet has been acting wierd lately so I'm honestly not surprised.
Aye, that's me. I'm the singer/songwriter in the band.
Hope you enjoy it - don't forget to join our facebook group! We're pretty committed to giving our content away for free, and we're already talking about doing an EP/mini-album in around 6 mths if this goes well. Also, we'll be releasing remixes and acoustic tracks periodically. Joining the group is probably the best way to stay up to date with it all.
Thanks again for taking the time!
Automatically Appended Next Post: HA! I was replying to Del'vhar there, not you Mr. M! I'm NOT the singer in THAT band, although I really, really wish I was!
Click 'buy now', then enter '0' as the price. It should bring up a 'download' button. Just click that, then it should start downloading the zip. I've just tried it and it seems to be working fine. Sorry for any inconvenience, mate!
Nah, not really - I've had a year of vocal training as part of my degree. It doesn't always show in the music we do, to be honest. I sing most comfortably in the super-tenor range, but a lot of our stuff requires me to sing quite low at times.
Wow Im really impressed. Usually when people I know say "Im in a band" Ill hear them play and wish I hadnt But you guys got some talent for sure. And you can SING MATE! I too had a problem downloading the cd as a whole, but I seem to have no problem song at a time. Very nice Im enjoying listening to it

Thanks! I've been getting reports that some people have had difficulty with the download - thanks for persevering! We're in the process of sending them a strongly-worded email, in the grand English tradition...
You reminded me of the movie Lightning Jack with Terry Hogan in it. Where he was reading the paper about him, and the editor left out the Lightning part of his name. I tried youtube to find that part but alas, I was let down lol
@Albatross: I've had Enough Is Never Good Enough in my head all day. Scars is another favorite. I wish the recording soundscape was a little more . . . three-dimensional? Your voice seems too much in the background.
It COULD be the mastering... We did it all ourselves, and sometimes mastering is best done by an outside person with fresh ears.
I'd not really noticed that, to be honest - after listening to something for as long I have with this you stop 'hearing' things, if that makes sense? An example is reverb - the longer you listen to a piece of music in one sitting, the harder it becomes to 'hear' reverb on things like vocals ('hear' in the psycho-acoustic sense, i.e. hear, process and interpret, I suppose...), so you just end up adding more and more until it sounds like it was recorded in a cathedral!
I'll certainly take that on board though, mate. Thanks for the feedback. And for paying! That's mental. I kind of feel bad. I'm very grateful, though.
Well, my download worked fine, and I'm listening to it now.
To be perfectly honest, my initial reaction to the first track was: 'meh', but it's really growing on me. I really like it now. You're an excellent singer, and if I had any money to spare and wasn't Scottish by descent, I would definately pay for this. I still may.
It's kind of coldplay-esque, but with a different feel to it that I can't quite place. Still, it's very good, and I wish you and your band the best of luck in finding a label or at least making some money out of this - you deserve it after all.
Ok I think I figured out a way around the problem... I couldn't get any of the links to go through when I put 0 as the price (sneaky devil you) but it worked when I put 00! (take THAT, Capitalism!) I'll have a listen to it later, too early right now to start blastin' music.
Overall a good effort, but I did have some thoughts. I mean this all in a purely constructive way and I apologize in advance if it comes off as anything other than that.
First, I think it feels kind of juvenile in the sense that all the songs seem to be cut from similar molds. It's not a terrible thing and if it works for you that's great, but across most of the songs I'm not getting a sense that you're trying to convey a different feeling. I think it has something to do with the fade in sounds at the beginning that slowly progress to you singing at around 0:20 in each song. Also there's not much variation in tempo across the songs so everything just feels kind of lethargic to me.
You have a great voice, it's got a crooning feeling that reminds of Morrisey from the Smiths. That being said, it seems like you sing in the same way each time and to me it doesn't add any emotion to the music. I'm not entirely sure how to express this, but it seems that you're going through the motions and don't feel what you're singing.
Once again, sorry if this comes off as overly critical but I'm just trying to outline the reasons I didn't care for it. I did some recording a couple years ago and our finished product was nowhere as professional or accomplished as this, so congratulations on finishing it and best of luck to you guys.

This. Though part of it may be the fact that this is far from my normal musical diet.
Downloaded and listened to the first track. Thought I would post some comments before I disappear to bed - will listen to the rest tomorrow:
- Overall production and mix is good, I thought. You have clearly spent a lot of time polishing the sound; it comes across as very professional, which is clearly a good thing.
- It sounds a little like Snow Patrol but with a grand piano wheeled in. That's not necessarily a bad thing - its a very epic, roomy sound. Lots of reverb, that sort of thing.
- You have a powerful voice. If I were to be hypercritical I would perhaps suggest enunciating words just a wee bit clearer but that really is being picky.
Downloading now. If it's as interesting (or even, amusing ) as your posts here I'm sure I'll like it, despite the fact that it probably needs moar cthulhu.
Downloading, liked track 1, listening to track 2. My musical knowledge is quite limited, but seeing as this sounds solid, I've posted on my FB, directing to your site. I'll join your FB group in a minute
Great project, hope it all goes well! I'll post more feedback from my friends when I get it!
From Manchester, heh? My older brother got his Math PhD there! Cheers!

Very nice! Not really my cup of tea, but i can appreciate that it's very well done! I liked the website too, very nice layout. How do you brits say it? Ah yes! Smashing!
It's a good little platform, Bandcamp. gak name, mind.
Still, one or two teething problems aside, it's proven quite easy to use, and I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to host large amounts of their own music.

Wow! Thanks, broseph!
@rev - Nice one! Hey, if you're in a band too I'd love to check your stuff out. Send me a link or something!
sadly we do mostly covers of current bands, our guitarist has trouble being creative, and being a bassist its hard to think of good riffs/solos for lead. (I play bass and sing.)
I will throw you a PM if we ever do though!

So, it's been a week and we've been really happy with the response we got. So far we've had over 700 plays of our album, and even managed to raise around 40 quid! Not bad really, considering we are giving it away for free...
Anyhow, I've been working my (generously proportioned) arse off trying to get some press for the record, and it's starting to bear some fruit, in dribs and drabs. We've already had a confirmation of a review for november from one webzine, and another got in touch to say that they would be passing it on to their North-West England reviewer. Well, that reviewer has a blog on www.davidbowie.com, and below is what he (or she) said - I'm assuming that this is a preliminary, and that the final version will appear on the zine next month, but even if it doesn't, it's still nice to get some recognition for one's hard work whatever the source!
Here's the short review:

Dresden is the collective name of five dynamic figures from industrial Manchester who describe themselves as a modernist indie/pop band. Championing the DIY aesthetic they use cutting edge technology to manufacture and record their sound, both, it should be said, to a remarkably high standard. Unselfishly, they’ve decided to make the fruits of these labours freely available to whoever wishes to listen.
Unashamedly pop, these eight tracks are awash with electronic sounds delicately tethered to twitching rhythms. For those with a rudimentary knowledge of the eighties, obvious influences include Ultravox – both the Midge Ure and John Foxx versions - and possibly the better years of OMD. For the younger ones amongst us, Hurts may supply valuable clues.
Overall the music has the texture of a series of exquisitely shot black and white Polaroids; each connected to one another thanks to the beautifully warm croon of vocalist Ryan Magee. Though there’s much to be discovered, the really rather fabulous Life of A Wife’s stomping bass and rippling piano has hit written all over it, while the monochromatic firework display that calls itself Hospital is a hot candidate to fill dance floors the length and breadth of the land.
On this showing Dresden have a bright future in front of them.
Listened to first two songs. Actually surprised, its not too bad at all. I was thinking it would be the mainstream s**t you hear on the radio and tv. 8)
Always happy to help out a Dakka.
Ill listen to more after work I thinks. I kinda gotta run out the door now.
I was a fan until you guys handed-out to the market. You're just like every other band, passing off your music as though it's worth nothing, just to get people to listen to it because it's the "free new thing". Hand-outs!
Totally kidding by the way - I missed this post and I'm intrigued, especially since that little musical argument we had, Alby.
I'll download it this afternoon... And just you try to stop me from paying for it! As a music reviewer I get enough free stuff as it is. This one's on me.

Having self-produced before, I know that the costs easily exceed forty nickers.
That said, did you have to hire facilities, or were you lucky enough to get your hands on student facilities and the like? Self-mastered?
The vocals are very, very good, "Ryan" (). They get a bit lost in some tracks (balance-wise), but you've got a great voice that verbs out well (). Very distinctly Northern ().
I'm still listening... but I'll get back to ya.
Does your drummer play an electric kit? More importantly, can your boys pull this off live instrumentally? Electronic hats always bug me but I'm a keyboardist and if I have to listen to pop, it at least has to have keys/electronica in it. Nice mix of both!

Yeah, we hire a place. It's pretty nice, but it costs us 150 quid a month - and we share it with another two bands, who each pay the same. We produced, engineered, mixed and mastered it all ourselves - I think it shows in the mastering, which has turned out... OK. Could have been better, if I'm being brutally honest. Our keys-player and processing guy did it, and they hadn't done it before. They were essentially flying blind, but I think it stands up REASONABLY well against commercial recordings. I think we would get someone else to do it next time, maybe...

Cheers. No, we don't use an electronic kit - we have a bloke who processes the beats and has a load of gadgets to help him make little improvisational changes on the fly. I'm not the most tech-savvy bloke, but I know there's a laptop in there somewhere! Also, lots of weird boxes, tape delays etc., in addition to two synths.
Hi, thought I'd update this with a few new snippets of press stuff that we managed to secure. We did full-page interview for the Manchester Evening News CityLife guide - thought folks might like to check it out?
“...A spectral odyssey of electronica-enhanced melancholia... one of the standout Manc music offerings of 2010... a band whose contrast between their minimalism of presentation and emotional fervour of songwriting carries genuine power and enigma...
David Sue, CityLife (Manchester Evening News), (Dec 10, 2010)
“The quality both in songwriting and production is consistent throughout its eight tracks... That they made this whole thing themselves without any financial backing or a great deal of outside assistance puts a fair few name producers to shame... (4 out of 5)”
Cath Aubergine, Manchestermusic.co.uk, (Nov 30, 2010)
Nice! Well done with that, and it's good to see you're starting to get attention from a large amount of people (half a million people! wow!). How many times has the album been downloaded anyway?
The articles certainly looked full of praise, and I found the stuff about your musical 'philosophy' pretty interesting, although:
Manchester Music wrote:there are more impassioned oh-oh-ohs than Bono watching an under-the-counter DVD (I apologies to Dresden and indeed everyone else for that thought)
Still, well done, and here's to an illustrious future!
Just had a listen to the first song, liked it. Have been looking for a new thing to listen to for a while and this is up my alley.
Will download the rest and throw a couple of bob your way- supporting da community and all that.
Fair play to you mate.
Absolutely no pressure at all to pay anything for the record mate! Just having people listen to it is awesome. But thanks a million. Really.
@Dastardly Dave - Well, I don't know if half a million people actually READ that article about my little band... but the MEN has a very large circulation. So you never know!

Will do - in the meantime, why not join our facebook group? It's the best way to keep up with developments. We've assembled a remix album with mixes of the 'Dresden' tracks that other folks have done. We've been giving it away with gig tickets in the form of a card with an exclusive download code on it, but we'll make it generally available in the New Year sometime, I reckon.
Sent the link to my Brother as well,he's something of a "mad keyboardist/electro Beathoven type",he was very impressed with the whole album, and plans to download it.
...Looks like your building an American fan base as well Albie.
Just gave it a listen, and even though the styling is not really up my alley, my opinion as an electronic musician is that it's really well written and produced, considering you guys did it on your own. I definately have some people that would love this that I'll be recommending it to.
Listening to the first track, definetly sounds great.
I'll be downloading the entire album.
Just promise, when you become famous, you won't forget about Dakka. WE MADE YOU, WE CAN DESTROY YOU.
Oh, and I've been playing the album on Audiosurf, and I've gotten to Pressure so far. As far as criticism goes, I'd have to say it's a pretty damn good song, but the bass just overpowers everything, and it's a real shame when you consider just how beautiful the keyboards are in this song. As much as I love a nice strong bass, I'd suggest making it quieter in this song, since the keyboards are just too beautiful to be covered up.
Albatross wrote:
@Fafnir - Individual listener experiences may vary!
Oh, I'm not saying it's bad, in fact, I quite like it. Pressure is my favourite song on the album. However, that was just the one flaw in the song that kept jumping out at me. I personally love a heavy bass when it's in the right place (J. J. Burnel is my favourite bassist, for his unrelentingly heavy bass which can just take over entire songs at times), but the base in that one song seemed just a little too powerful considering all the other great elements of that song.
The song really seems like it puts the vocals and keyboards at the forefront, in my opinion. You could drop everything else, and it would still be a great song. The rest of the tracks feel fairly well balanced, although Pressure has so much more raw power in it that it really stands out regardless of its flaws.
Really though, the only thing that worries me on a whole is that my playlist is getting more and more dominated by Manchester.
Albatross wrote:Anyone else noticed that the record is particularly bass-heavy in terms of frequencies?
It's a bit muddy on the low end. The lower frequencies lack definition. Sub-bass seems okay, but 60-150 is kinda mushy. It's not always the easiest thing to fix so I wouldn't beat up the engineers too bad I usually get around it by running each track into 2 subchannels. One has a HPF cutoff at 150 and the other a LPF at 90. It takes out that whole problematic frequency range. Once I get to the mixing stage, I can dial back in just what I want. Certainly not the only way to handle it, but it works well enough for me.

I'm sorry, I don't speak.... whatever language that was! I just write (and sing) songs! In the new year, we've got a producer coming in who's worked with some pretty big names - he'll be tweaking the record before taking it round the labels for us. Hopefully he'll sort stuff like this out for us. I'll certainly raise the issue. Thanks for the heads-up.
@mattyrm - You 'named' me!
@The_Saviour - Praise indeed! Thanks! Also, check out my mate's band Axis of Perdition. You may like them. Probably a little more up your street, to be honest.
@Fafnir - It's fine, you're entitled to your opinion, man. I wasn't offended at all, so don't even pay it no mind. Which other manc bands are you into? Have you heard Dutch Uncles yet? They're pretty good.
@kronk - Cheers buddy! Thanks for checking us out.
Heh, no problem, I'm used to glassy-eyed stares, which is why I usually just limit my comments on music to "it's pretty good" or "not my thing". Any producer worth his salt should be able to sort it out well enough, or have access to an engineer that can. Glad to hear you guys are doing well with it

I know I am late but only just found this thread, frack me mate!
I downloaded this today really expecting some trash thrash that some dick has cobbled together. I have never been so wrong in my life. Bloody hell it's good!!
The first track, Enough is Never Enough, made me sit up and listen once the vocals started. That feeling of shock and pure excitement will stay with me for a very long time. Beautiful vocals.
The only thing, and I mean the only thing I have isues with is the tendancy for the tune to drown out the vocals at times and at other times someone plays with the vocal effects especially in "Hospital" making it virtually unidentifiable. No need, the vocals are so good, reminds me of Tom Smith from Editors at times. The tracks are very well put together and with some professional production (no offence but it could be a wee bit sharper at times) you have some real anthems in there. Life of a Wife, Pressure, Enough and Everybody are all cracking.
More volume on the vocals, less playing with it. I have no idea who is singing and could not be arsed to trawl through the thread to find out but the band has some real talent. I really like it.
Send it to Zane Lowe on Radio 1. I am being serious.

Oh, I know what you mean. I absolutely hate metal (short of Jethro Tull [/trollface]) so I wasn't planning on downloading anything, and then I read the disclaimer Albatross put in his first post, and I became slightly interested. Even surprised myself when I paid for it, if only a bit.
`must check it out. unfortunately I'm on DSL and already in mid-download for the next 8 hours or so :( so I'll get back to you in a bit. Thanks for putting it up man.

A couple of tunes from Elbow's latest. TRUEFAX: The guitarist drinks at my local.
'I've been working on a cocktail called Grounds For Divorce' is easily my favourite lyric of recent years.
The Happy Mondays. Not to everyone's taste, but I love 'em!
And finally - The Stone fething Roses!
A primer in three songs:
They are widely considered to have only one album (the eponymous debut) worth buying - I tend to disagree, as 'Second Coming' has some pretty cool stuff on it. That said, 'The Stone Roses' is widely considered a classic British album. Because it's fething mega.

Sorry I threw that in to highlight the fact that I really expected rubbish. It's a brilliant album. I bought and downloaded crystal castles and a couple of othe tracks from Amazon this afternoon but haven't listened to them yet.
Oh, and for the record, Albatross, I'm a huge fan of the 'pay what you want' system of distribution. I hate buying physical copies of music and I hate iTunes with a fiery passion that consumes my soul. Your method combines pretty much everything I love about distribution while cutting out what I hate. No middle man or silly junk like DRM. It makes me feel good about paying for music. More bands need to do that.
Im not a huge fan of...er.. well anybody, but i was going to say Elbow.
However, the live version of "One day like this" is really spectacular, thanks to Elbow and the good old BBC, i think its their orchestra or something..
Basically, we got a few people to remix some tracks from the record and did some ourselves. Just a different way of approaching the material, and the result is quite interesting, in my opinion. Totally different vibe to the original record.
Ooh, new (remixed) Dresden stuff? I'm nabbing that! I'll let you know what I think, but if your last Album was anything to go by, it'll be pretty good!
I did notice while listening to Annihalation earlier today that the beat was exactly the same as a passing cars indicator lights . Was this intentional? I think the public needs to know.
Im a big fan of electronic music, and this sounds great man. I dont want to inflate your ego further though, everyone else has done rather well in that department
Wow Hospital is the tits man. Jammin out to this one in the future thats for sure
Seems like some pretty good stuff. If you don't mind (I'm doing it anyway ) I'm going to post my thoughts as I listen to the tracks. I'm no music expert though, so I'll likely get a few musical terms wrong here and there, just bear with me - we music heathens can't be expected to know all your fancy words
1. Annihalation. (Craig Connelly Remix).
Not much seems to have changed here, bar a bit more synthyness on the backing. It's a little longer than the original as well. I liked it.
2. Pressure(d? what is this D doing in the title?) (Gristlemix)
Wow. Where have your vocals gone? Everythings drowning in bass synth! It's got a completely different feel to it, and it's a lot deeper in tone. Not really my thing, but it's got an interesting sound to it.
3. Enough is never good Enough (Reina Lamour's Itsuki Lounge Remix)
Ooh, birds and waterfalls? I don't remember them being in the original! Lots of Synthy noises here, and you seem to be using the word 'Enough' slightly more than you did the first time round... It's a lot more electronic and (I lack the correct term) trancy than the first one. Still, not a bad listen overall, but probably not one I'll be hearing regularly.
4. Hospital (Craig Connolly Remix)
The original was already quite electronicky, but this one has taken it in an entirely different direction. The opening especially sounds like the backing track to a lycra-suited safe-cracking scene from a film. Again, I lack the words to describe the musical style, but it sounds good, and I'll likely listen to it again.
5. Scars (Lewis O' Brien Remix)
Sorry to say it, but unfortunately, I don't like this track at all. It was one of my favourites from the original, and it's lost something, I feel, in remixing it. What's with all the computer noises and the quieting of your awesome Vocals? Full credit to you for making the track in the first place, but the remix could have been better. That's all I really have to say about that.
6. Hospital (From the Kites of San Quentin Remix)
Plenty of Synthy weirdness here, which I don't really enjoy in huge amounts. That's a matter of personal taste though, as all of this post has been. Still, it's a nice take on the original.
In conclusion:
Good Stuff! Keep up the good work chaps, although I'd certainly prefer some new stuff over remixes. Overall, I give it 8/10. (9.5/10 for the original)

I guess we'll never know. That is, until Frazzled releases his long-awaited solo album 'Touch My Weiner'. Then we'll know.
Incidentally, there are a fair few musical Dakkaites aren't there? I know FITZZ plays bass, and Guitardian was in a band that had a deal and did pretty well. There's also folks like Shadowbrand and Rubiksnoob (IIRC) who play instruments, amongst others.
Perhaps we should turn this thread into a 'Promote Your Band' thread so everyone can have a go at posting their music? What do you guys think?
@DD - Thanks for taking the time to analyse it mate - just to point out, I didn't have anything to do with any of the mixes; the raw tracks were just given to the remixing bods to play around with. FACT: 'Scars' on the remix mini-album is assembled entirely from audio off the original track, which is mad when you think about it.

For a dollar? Sorry, just watched robocop
Err... I may be young, but I have gotten alot of these referenced. This one, however, appears to be lost to me.
Anyway, if I wasn't in the states, I would sing backup with my mad sexy baritone.
I know how much effort it takes to create your own album if you're not using to doing it (The first few times I recorded back in high school for various stuff, it's a hell of a lot of work), and this is beyond that, creating a professional-standard album instead of something you can just show to a few interested people as a snippet.
Albatross wrote:

Have to sig.
I'm enjoying the music sir. Here on the left coast there is a revival of vocal driven electronica, I will definitely be passing this album along to my friends.
I'm particualarly enjoying "Pressure." It's my fav so far.
Hi folks, just thought I'd update interested Dakkanauts on a few recent developments:
We are in the final stages of negotiating representation in the shape of management/record label. We've been in talks with a small local indie label/management/PR company with a view to them representing us. Just a few little things to iron out, but the plan is to release a single this summer, supported by a small tour, press/TV/radio etc. The single will be chart eligible, and recording has already started.
Here's a video of our keys player working on the outro:
Please note that the vocals are only a guide track - the final version will feature an autistic children's choir and a brass band. Seriously.
Downloads are going very well. We were approached by a leading torrent site to be their featured artist for a month. They interviewed me, and have placed the record on the front page of the site, which has around 150,000 users. It's a community which is heavily accented towards emerging bands sharing music with listeners, so nothing too dodgy - I guess they just liked what we were doing with the whole 'gratitude box' thing.
Anyhow, this week we received 8000 downloads. Crazy. We've also heard that people have been seeding it on other torrent sites, some as far afield as Russia! In reality, the total number of downloads could be much higher. There's no way to be sure.
Oh yeah, our bass-player made a video for one of the songs on the record, 'Annihilation', using old stock footage from cold war public service videos. Check it out:
For anyone who hasn't downloaded it yet, the record is still available from: http://www.dresdenmusic.com Pay as much as you like!
And finally, thank you all so much for all your support - everyone in Dresden ( the band, not the German city) has been absolutely blown away by the level of interest shown in us by the good people of DakkaDakka.
I joined and liked your facebook stuff. Don't have a twitter account, so I can't humour you there.
And for people feeling scared about being affiliated with file-sharing sites, don't worry. Your browsing information is generally already available to the highest bidder anyway, so even if you don't have it on facebook saying you're affiliated, someone probably already knows what you're doing anyway.
Albatross wrote:Weeeeeell... it's a little early to use the word 'success', but it's a start.

P.S. - Where's good to play in Swindon?
Bugger all to be honest mate, we mostly have dodgy clubs where really bad dubstep and hiphop is played or the equally dodgy "furnace" which is almost exclusively for angry white kids and terrible metal. Best your going to get is the oasis centre though again its pretty shoddy as its mostly a leisure centre with the occasional music event (fun fact, the band oasis named themselves after the place after/during a gig there).
I know this is going to sound stupid, but as a self proclaimed "Metalhead", i absolutely love your bands music!
you have a pretty amazing voice, and your mates sound like they're holding up their end of the bargin as well.
after i post this, i'm downloading it. and so far my 17yr and13yr old like it as much as i do(trust me, the ladies are tough music critics!).
i look forward to hearing more!
now, i'm going to take you up on your offer. my son(20), is in a local Tulsa Punk band called "Soap charge".
their Myspace only has 3 songs atm, but it's better than nothing i guess! anyway, here's a link:

PS FYI, my son is the genius with his finger up his nose! Stupid exwife's genes....
Hmm, I haven't downloaded but I liked the outro you posted and I listed to annihilation on youtube. You certainly got skills. I'll gladly pirate your album once you hit it big
I listened to Annihilation from the youtube video again, and I must say, once I got past the 'this is nowhere near anything I normally listen to' thought, I kept listening and found that, regular tastes or not, I was liking it. There's no denying the talent behind the music.
If I had to suggest one thing, tune up the vocals more in the mix! This isn't the type of music I would tend to blast, but I found that without turning it up a bit louder than I would have liked I couldn't make out the lyrics. Not that they aren't clear, but they seem a bit overwhelmed by the rest of the track. Namean?
Well, David Byrne said ""Singing is a trick to get people to listen to music for longer than they would ordinarily."
Anyway, I hope that when you guys get signed, you can continue with the 'pay as you want' method of direct download. It makes me actually want to pay for my music for once.

I listened to Soap Charge - I quite liked it, actually! I was worried that it would be pop-punk in the Blink-182/Good Charlotte mode (which I HATE ), but it was proper old-school hard-core punk, bags of attitude. Which is good. I hate all that 'baggy-shorts' ska-punk nonsense that so many modern 'punk' bands peddle - it's just dorky.
But no, Soap Charge's stuff was cool. Give them the 'thumbs up' from me.

Hopefully at some point. A lot depends on how this year goes, but the folks at the label have alluded to the possibility. A lot of things have to occur this year for it to happen, though.
And it won't be a tour - it'll be a few dates at most.
Well if you guys do come to the states, theres a rock bar in Flint called the Machine shop that would catch you alot of coverage. Infact alot of bigger named bands stop in there all the time for shows.
Hell Mushroomhead was in there a few months ago, and Kid Rock occasionally swings in to tear the place down.
Hi Dakkanauts! It's been a busy few months - all sorts of projects in the offing (more details as they are confirmed), and we've been working on some new material.
As you lot have been really supportive with this whole thing, I thought it might be nice to record a few stripped-down versions of some new stuff, which we will be posting in various places from time to time. Anyhow, here's the first one:
Thank-you all very much for all your support!

Cheers buddy! Might be a while off yet, we'll have to get the single/tour out of the way first, plus we're working on a fething mental project at present... can't say too much at this point (in case it all falls through for some reason) but it involves a brass band and a short film. Srsly.

I highly recommend it, bloody good stuff indeed.
It's almost like Elbow, Radiohead and moby were thrown in a blender with (presumably) Alby's lyrical and vocal talent; the result is awesome is every sense of the word.

This is the most accurate description for this. I've listened to the album a bunch recently, and came to this conclusion myself (independently).
I just paid you 3 engrish pounds for it, let it not be said i aint a generous blighter lol. If i dont like the songs i will consider it a charity case.

Chowder you are a genius, I'm not sure how alby would sound with some of the high notes in mad world but if they pulled it off it would sound incredible.

The film we made with the Leyland Brass Ensemble is finished, our label is now just finding a way to get it on the telly somehow. In the meantime, we put it up on youtube.
Here it is:
Also, we played at the launch of Taste Masters Vol. 2, the new compilation by the label we're working with:
The compilation itself is out to buy now via various online retailers - here's a link to it on iTunes:
http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/the-laboratory-project-taste/id438363709 In truth, the quality is a little variable so I would give each track a quick listen to see if you like it before purchasing, as you can obviously just buy only the ones you like, if any.
The Dresden track is the one featured in the video, by the way.
Well I will litterally listen to anything with half a beat(as in I have military cadences on my ipod)so once I finish DLing it I will give my opinion of it, hopefully its good
Automatically Appended Next Post: Good soft music, however I am too trashed to really listen to the whole album
Okay I have just gotten around to listening to it, and I do have to say it makes me nostalgia pretty hard(alot of 90s music sounded like this). So all things considering I fething love it.
Brilliant mate, knowing you as well as I do I still cant believe that wonderful voice comes out of your mouth. It should sound guttural and ill tempered like mine!
It sort of sounds like a hi-fi 80's version of Coldplay. I assume that's kind of what you were going for, so I'll let you take that as a compliment. It's really not the sort of music I'm partial to, but I gave it an honest effort and listened to at least half of every song.
I do like the song 'Hospital' a bit, though the vocals are completely inaudible to me, and it still makes me feel like I'm a member of The Breakfast Club.
Even though Dresden isn't all that enjoyable to me, I still hope that you succeed. It's a tough industry, especially if you're looking to live off of it.
Chrysaor686 wrote:It sort of sounds like a hi-fi 80's version of Coldplay.
Not nearly as whiny, monotonous or annoying as Coldplay.
(For the record, Rush of Blood to the head was an amazing album, everything they did after that is kind of flaky and sounds generally the same. Viva La Vida was a decent try, but mostly because Brian Eno worked a lot of his magic, and even then, I wouldn't call that album entirely enjoyable, although Death and All His Friends is easily one of the best songs the band has ever been involved in making)
Anyway, FIBUA's really good, a very different direction, and a very good one. It's got some real power behind it, and is oddly danceable. It's definitely nice to see you guys trying a new style, and even better to see it work, really, really well. Granted, Cold Hands coming after it may not be the best choice due to their great contrasts in style, but it's still a solid track that harkens back to the style of your first album, only more refined and polished.
Although I eagerly await your next album, however it ends up being, I can't help but hope it ventures more down the vein of FIBUA over Cold Hands. Granted, both songs are excellent, but I feel that Cold Hands retreads over old ground, while FIBUA just opens a door to places that are begging to be explored.
I couldn't agree more, Fafnir - yes 'Cold Hands' is sort of going over old ground, but there are reasons for this, if you'll allow me to elucidate them?
Basically, we decided to part company with The Laboratory Project as we didn't really have a lot of confidence with the direction they were taking in several very important areas (which I won't bore you with) - the upshot of all this is that the version of 'Cold Hands' they put out (which hardly anyone heard the first time round, because....no, I'll rant.) has the brass ensemble on, and that's other people's work. We wanted to have a version of the song without it, so that if we wanted to put it on an album or something later on, we could without any legal problems. Anyway, we thought it'd be nice to put it on the free CD so that the many, many people who didn't buy the original compilation that it was on could have a chance to own it. Also, I feel that it sort of bridges the gap between the older stuff and the newer, more electronic stuff.
Yes, the newer stuff is closer to what 'FIBUA' sounds like. I would really love for you all to hear it, particularly 'Black Cloud' and 'Body in the Water'. The final recorded versions aren't ready yet, but we're recording the party next Friday....
Fav part is at about 4:36 of the performance only video (the one without the "making of stuff") when you get caught up in the moment and let yourself get carried off by the music.

Agreed, cover bands are so boring, if I wanted to hear another artists work I would have bought it instead, play your own music. In the mean time I'm going to put a more honest effort into giving Dresden a shot
although I did enjoy FIBUA very upbeat and catchy. Not sure if it's my style though never been a big pop fan.
My fav is their remix cd? Its not really a cd is it? Either way, their songs remixed were fantastic and more to my liking. But I still throw on the original songs when Im wanting to just chill and relax
Due to the crap hitting the fan, i'm afraid I can't come down on Friday to see you live, but at least I have the free stuff on the website, so i'll be with you in spirit!

Im a little opposite. And I dont mean I like the remix far better then the original, its only just barely, and mainly because I love electronic music, so it gives those songs a little bump. Specially Hospital. I could listen to that song everyday for a month and it wouldnt get old
The two new songs are pretty good, I could easily imagine hearing them on the radio. Hmm perhaps that is a rather crass observation, radio play is obviously not the only form of validation for musicians etc... Anyway...
Not a hundred percent on the drum loop thingy on the second song, find it quite distracting. I keep thinking of that Portishead song Machinegun.
All in all, you get a thumbs up from me. We all know that is immensely important to you and your band.

YES! That was a direct influence.

Fighting In Built Up Areas. It's an armed forces acronym - the song is our response to the Manchester riots.
Interestingly, UK armed forces don't use FIBUA anymore according to mattyrm and another RM mate who's just back from Vietganners. Now they use OBUA - the 'O' standing for 'Operations', presumably to make it sound less violent.
I suggested that they go the whole hog and change it to DDTBP:

In addition to being available on iTunes, will it be available for direct download? I simply won't use iTunes (horrible program), and I never buy physical media. A way to buy the .mp3 or .flac (preferably .flac) directly would be lovely.
I can understand if your 'pay what you want method' from your last album isn't worth doing again, but I'd really like to have the option to buy a direct download, as that's the only way I'll ever pay for any music, regardless of how we're expected to actually pay.

I asked him for an mp3 copy of the new song and he told me not to distribute it to widely so I'm guessing putting a download out on the web for everyone is probably unlikely at this time.
Feeling a bit ropey this morning (actually, afternoon). I Didn't get home until 5am. All I'm gonna say is: If someone offers you a line of something, check what it is first.
Words of wisdom right there.
Yeah, the party was a success, I reckon. There was easily 100+ people in there and the capacity was only 150. It seemed full, and people were having a good time by the looks of things. Anyway, we filmed it and recorded the audio, so you'll be able to see it for yourselves soon enough!
RE: Some sort of Fibua release - We won't be releasing the limited edition CD (they all went last night) as an MP3, but obviously I appreciate that none of you live in Manchester, and some not even in the UK, so you didn't have the opportunity to get a copy. Tell you what, to say thanks for all the support that you lovely Dakkanauts have shown my crappy little band, I'll email the track/s to anyone who wants them. Just drop me your email address on a PM.
Nah, it was the cans of Oranjeboom that did for me. That is rough stuff. I woke up in my own bed with my missus and the dog. No idea how the dog got there.
Ugh, hell no! The normal one is bad enough! They were selling it for £3 a can in Kraak. That's the fething Northern Quarter for you - hipster prices....

Whhhaaaaa?!
I'd have nipped to the Offy, bought 6 cans for 4 quid and stuffed them down my trolleys.
